MIT baseball coach uses sensors, motion capture technology to teach pitching – MIT News
Posted: May 27, 2021 at 8:12 am
The field of sports analytics is most known for assessing player and team performance during competition, but MIT Baseballs pitching coach, Todd Carroll, is bringing a different kind of analytics to the practice field for his student athletes.
A baseball player might practice a pitch 10,000 times before it becomes natural. Through technology, we can speed that process up, Carroll said in a recent seminar organized by the MIT.nano Immersion Lab. To help players improve athletically, without taking up that much time, and keep them healthy thats the goal.
The virtual talk Pitching in baseball: Using scientific tools to visualize what weknow and learn what we don't grew out of a new research collaboration between MIT Baseball, the MIT Clinical Research Center (CRC), and the Immersion Lab.
Carroll started with an explanation of how pitching has evolved over time and what specific skills coaches measure to help players perfect their throw. Then, he and Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) postdoc Praneeth Namburi used the Immersion Labs motion capture platform and wireless physiological sensors from the CRC to explore how biomechanical feedback and interactive visualization tools could change the future of sports.
Namburi stepped up to the (hypothetical) mound, with Carroll as his coach. By interfacing the physical and digital in real time, the two were able to assess Namburis pitches and make immediate adjustments that improved his athletic performance in one session.
Visualizing sports data
Stride length, pitcher extension, hip-shoulder separation, and ground force production are all measurable aspects of pitching, explained Carroll. The capabilities of the Immersion Lab allow for digital tracking and visualization of these skills. Wearing wireless sensors on his body, Namburi threw several pitches inside the lab. The sensors plot Namburis position and track his movements through space, as shown in the first part of the video below. Adding in the physiological measurements, the second clip shows the activity of his rotation muscles (in green), his acceleration through space (in blue), and the pressure, or ground force, produced by his foot (in red).
Pitching at the Immersion Lab
By reviewing the motion capture frames together, Carroll could show Namburi how to modify his posture to increase stride length and extend his hip-shoulder separation by holding his back foot on the ground. In this example, the technology betters the communication between coach and player, leading to more efficient improvements.
Assessing physiological measurements alongside the motion capture can also help decrease injuries. Carroll emphasized how this technology can help rehabbing players, teaching them to trust their body again. Thats a big part of injury recovery, trusting the process. These students find comfort in the data and that allows them to push through.
Following the training session, Namburi overlayed the motion capture from his first and last throw, comparing his posture, spine position, stride length, and feet position. A visual compilation of all his throws compared the trajectory of his wrist, showing that, over time, his movement became more consistent and more natural.
The seminar concluded with a live demonstration of a novice pitcher in the Immersion Lab following the advice of Coach Carroll via Zoom. Two people who have never thrown a baseball before today, and were able to teach them remotely during a pandemic, reflected Carroll. Thats pretty cool.
Afterward, Namburi answered questions about the ease of taking the physiological monitoring tools to the field and of being able to capture and measure the movements of multiple athletes at once.

Immersed in collaboration
The MIT.nano Immersion Labs new seminar series, IMMERSED, explores the possibilities enabled by technologies such as motion capture, virtual and augmented reality, photogrammetry, and related computational advances to gather, process, and interact with data from multiple modalities. The series highlights the capabilities available at the Immersion Lab, and the wide range of disciplines to which the tools and space can be applied.
IMMERSED offers another avenue for any individual scientists, artists, engineers, performers to consider collaborative projects, says Brian W. Anthony, MIT.nano associate director. The series combines lectures with demonstrations and tutorials so more people can see the wide breadth of research possible at the lab.
As a shared-access facility, MIT.nanos Immersion Lab is open to researchers from any department, lab, or center at MIT, as well as external partners. Learn more about the Immersion Laband how to become a user.

Bloomberg
(Bloomberg) -- Eric Lis factory making glass lampshades for companies including Home Depot Inc. is being stretched to its limits with sales doubling their pre-pandemic level. But like many Chinese manufacturers, he doesnt plan to expand operations -- a reticence that could slow the pace of Chinas economic growth this year and prolong a shortage of goods being felt around the world as demand picks up.Surging prices of raw materials means margins are compressed, explains Li, owner of Huizhou Baizhan Glass Co. Ltd., in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, which makes about $30 million in annual revenue. With the global economic recovery still uneven, the future is very unclear, so there is not much push to expand capacity, he adds. The combination of higher input prices, uncertainty about export prospects and a weak recovery in domestic consumer demand meant Chinese manufacturing investment from January to April was 0.4% below the same period in 2019, according to official statistics (comparing to 2019 strips out the distortion of last years pandemic data).Due to the vast size of Chinas manufacturing sector, that poses a risk both to the nations growth -- which is currently predicted to reach 8.5% in 2021, according to a Bloomberg tally of economists estimates -- and to a global economy thats grappling with supply shortages and rising prices.Falling ProfitsWeaker-than-expected investment could have a sizable impact on GDP growth this year, said Citigroup Inc.s China economist, Li-gang Liu. Lower investment may dent imports of capital goods and equipment from developed economies like Japan and Germany, which in turn could drag their economic recovery and rebound as well, he added.AnHui HERO Electronic Sci & Tec Co. Ltd. is one of those companies feeling the squeeze. Based in the eastern province of Anhui, the company manufactures capacitors used to make electronic circuits, with sales mainly in the domestic market. Jing Yuan, the founder, says orders are up as much as 30% year-on-year, but profits are down 50% due to increasing materials costs that are not easily passed onto clients. The company is under huge cash pressure as it needs to pay half a month in advance of delivery in order to secure copper and other metals, which they previously paid for months after receiving, he said. The commodity issue has to be addressed by the government, he added. What Bloomberg Economics Says...Chinese industry is absorbing significant cost pressures from rising commodity prices -- damping the inflationary impact for the rest of the world. Will it last? Our analysis of gross margins suggests it could for a while longer: downstream industries -- where the cost crunch is most severe -- still have a small cushion.David Qu, China economistFor the full report, click here.Input shortages mean some manufacturers arent able to make use of their existing facilities, so expansion would be of little use. Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio Inc. suspended production at one of its factories last month, due to a shortage of microchips.Modern Casting Ltd., which makes iron and steel products in Guangdong, issued a note to clients this month saying it would not be able to meet its current orders due to high raw material costs. A member of staff who answered the phone at the companys office confirmed the note, but declined to give further details.Growth TransitionOn top of the higher input costs, Chinese companies face a bumpy transition toward domestic consumer spending to sustain its post-pandemic recovery.Exports, Chinas strong-suit last year, may begin to slow as vaccine roll-outs cause consumers in wealthy countries to shift spending back to services. Meanwhile, the growth rate of Chinese consumer spending has yet to fully recover.Investment sentiment among Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises is below levels seen even in 2018-9 when uncertainties from the U.S.-China trade war were a brake on expansion plans, according to a regular survey of more than 500 Chinese companies by Standard Chartered Plc.Demand is still mainly underpinned by exports, so domestic companies are aware that this is not sustainable, said Standard Chartereds China economist, Lan Shen. While some export-oriented sectors have been pushed to their limits, large amounts of slack remain for manufacturers targeting Chinese consumers due to subdued domestic demand.Retail sales growth was 4.3% in April on a two-year average basis, which strips out base effects from the pandemic, less than half pre-pandemic growth rates. Overall capacity use at Chinas manufacturers fell to 77.6% in the first quarter from 78.4% in the previous three months, with the automotive sector hit hardest by overcapacity following three years of declining sales volumes.Even for electric vehicles whose sales are surging, most companies have already built their capacity and will now focus on incremental upgrades. The majority of the investment has been done, said Jochen Siebert of JSC Automotive Consulting.China ordered state-owned companies to expand last year, with their investment growth of 5.3% in 2020 from the prior year easily outstripping the 1% increase in private investment. But for a sustainable pick-up in investment, the market, not the state, needs to feel confident.Carsten Holz, an expert on Chinese investment statistics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, estimates that privately-owned companies have accounted for 87% of manufacturing investment in 2015, the most recent year of available data. They are more sensitive to input costs. There is a pandemic plus insecurity about future trade given a new U.S. administration, neither of which is conducive to investment that relies on long-term growth prospects, Holz said.Mixed PoliciesTransport bottlenecks are also a challenge for export-oriented manufacturers. Gordon Gao, who exports gardening products from China, said that he has had to reject 80% of orders this year due to port delays. In one case, an order placed before mid-February could only be shipped three months later when a client finally secured a container.Beijing has tried to improve conditions for private companies by ordering a crackdown on speculation to curb commodity prices and easing access to bank loans.Yet the government continues to gradually withdraw fiscal and monetary stimulus measures introduced amid the pandemic last year. It set a relatively unambitious target of above 6% growth for this year, and the Communist Partys Politburo signaled last month it would prioritize reforms to control house prices and debt growth. The policy stance has definitely shifted away from supporting growth and back toward de-risking the financial sector, said Adam Wolfe, an economist at London-based Absolute Strategy Research. The risks for economic growth seem tilted to the downside, especially for capital-intensive, construction-linked sectors. For manufacturers such as Li, a longer period of domestic growth and control over input prices will be needed before capacity expansion is on the cards. While his company of 200 workers took on new permanent staff before the pandemic, for now hed rather pass the risks of investment on to others.I wouldnt do that now, I would rather hire some temporary workers and outsource the rest, he said.More stories like this are available on bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.2021 Bloomberg L.P.

Dorchester County inmates are using technology to better their lives while incarcerated – WCBD News 2
Posted: at 8:11 am
DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) Inmates in Dorchester County are using technology to learn and better their lives through a new initiative.
The Dorchester County Detention Center is using tablet devices to learn skills that could help them once they leave jail for the outside world.
I decided to put it in place, said Sheriff LC Knight. Its been very successful for us so far.
Paytel, the company that provides phone calls and video visitation services to inmates, provides their Pathway to Achieve program at no additional cost to inmates or the jail.
They told us that there has been 12,000 hours of education charged to the tablets, Sheriff Knight said.
That is just in the first quarter of this year.
Inmates choose from 900 courses on various topics including how to handle stress and what to do if you have addiction problems.
It trains them in a lot of things and helps them in recovery. Some of them maybe have an addiction problem, and [it] gives them some ideas on where they can get help and that kind of stuff, he explained.
The top three categories inmates at the Dorchester County Detention Center are spending their time learning about are addiction recovery, self-control, and even how to be a better parent.
A good many of our individuals who are staying there, or what I sometimes call deadbeat dads, forget they bring children into the world and they dont wanna take care of them. So, somebody carries them to court and tries to get them to pay their fair share to take care of these children and this kind of helps them understand that I do have a responsibility, said Sheriff Knight.
260 inmates completed one or more GED prep courses and 26 inmates completed all 160 GED courses.
You know, even though theres been some bad publicity about a lot of detention facilities, most of the sheriffs are trying to do whats right because everyone in there is somebodys loved one. And we are responsible for taking care of them.
Paytel said the program has a value of nearly $392,000 if the county had to pay for it.

Helping Consumers Upgrade and Migrate Their Technology from Home to Office – Dealerscope
Posted: at 8:11 am
As offices begin to reopen in some cities and portions of the country, consumers will continue seeking ways to upgrade their work-from-home environments while migrating some of their favorite productivity tools and technologies back to the office with them.
As these needs continue to increase, its critically important for retailers to provide consumers the latest technology for both home and work, especially as the line between the two becomes even more blurred. Consumers want to be connected 24/7 regardless of location, and there is enormous sales opportunity in meeting that demand.
As companies bring employees back to the office, workers return more technologically savvy, with ever greater expectations for comfort and productivity. They want the same products they have become accustomed to using at home. Just as workers upgraded their home office technology with the addition of multiple monitors, ergonomic keyboards, mice, and chairs, employers and retailers should prepare to provide some of the same advanced technologies and ergonomics their employees adopted at home.Video calls will remain the norm going forward, and products such as high-resolution web cameras will be in demand. Ultra-light weight bone conduction headsets provide for comfortable all-day use while offering better situational awareness because you can hear whats going on around you.
Hybrid work environments require technologies that make it easy and convenient for employees to transition as they divide their time between the office and working from home. Accessories employing USB-C simplify connecting monitors, phones, keyboards, notebooks, and cameras in various environments. Employees are seeking robust storage drives to easily access work when they are not connected to the company network, whether at home or on the go.
With the acceleration of 5G, manufacturers are integrating LTE into products so that employees can make calls directly from their notebooks and tablets.
As many businesses and schools shut down in-person environments last year, consumers cobbled together the available technology for remote work and learning. As the year went on, consumers began to identify the products that best meet their needs and started upgrading accessories that provided more efficient communication and comfort.
One year later, consumers looking to fine-tune their remote setup are seeking to upgrade accessories like keyboards, mice, and cameras that make it easier to work. Some are choosing to stick with a single brand so that their ecosystem of devices and accessories work seamlessly together.
With the prevalence of video calls, consumers are starting to look at cameras with a higher capacity (1080p or 4K) for more detail work, whiteboarding, or doing product demos. They want cameras with better microphones, image tracking, and other advanced features.
They are looking to the larger bandwidth of Wi-Fi 6 and mesh networks to ensure robust connectivity for work and for streaming entertainment.
In addition to upgrading for the latest features and functionality, the ability to work comfortably is becoming increasingly important, and consumers are swapping out their old equipment. Many workers seated for a large portion of the day are adopting ergonomic chairs, stands, and standing desks along with smart watches that remind them to get up and move.
As consumers become more connected at home through remote work, learning and daily activities, they are looking for a hub device that acts as a command center for the home. People are recognizing the importance of having an all-in-one smart device with a screen and speakers to check the weather, view the front door, see whats next on their schedule, and play music or news.
More in-person interactions are driving a rise in home medical devices such as contactless thermometers and oxygen level monitors to stay in tune with their personal health. Wireless home security cameras that can operate for up to two years on a battery charge provide inexpensive solutions that dont require hardwiring to networks and power sources.
As consumers continue to be more connected than ever whether at home, in the office, or on the go it is important for retailers to understand the different consumer profiles and what products fit into each environment.
There is enormous opportunity to address these needs, especially with the rise of 5G and broadband for better connectivity. We have entered a hybrid world, where consumers can choose virtual or in-person, and retailers should be prepared with something to offer everyone.

Effective remote work requires following these principles – Washington Technology

COMMENTARY
Communication, focus and the right hires are among the keys to success
Government agencies, like other employers, have spent the last year adjusting to limitations imposed by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Almost universally, this has forced agencies to rely heavily on remote work and delay talent acquisition, especially for on-site positions.
As more Americans get vaccinated and restrictions are eased, the situation is rapidly evolving. While lasting implications remain unknown, two early trends are emerging. First, employers are starting to ramp up hiring and demand for talent will significantly increase. Second, remote work is not going away.
Seventy-six percent of CEOs say they will allow remote work on a full-time basis for all or most employees, according to Predictive Indexs Annual CEO Benchmarking Report 2021. And 97 percent of companies said they will allow remote work in some form moving forward.
Hiring is picking up, but it remains difficult to hire on-site employees. Demand is especially high for project managers, technical solutions architects, and business analysts.
The increasing demand for talented employees, the scarcity of potential on-site workers and the growing popularity of employees working remotely make it critical for employers to embrace remote work and ensure managers can effectively manage offsite. To ensure efficient telework, it is critical for managers to institute the proper systems and processes.
Managing a remote team is not always easy. Concerns range from a lack of face-to-face supervision and limited access to information to social isolation and reductions in productivity. Given the fact that remote work is likely to continue even after the pandemic, consider the following tips to maximize remote teams chances for success.
Determine Your Requirements
Over the last year, many employers have learned that many functions can be efficiently and effectively performed remotely. Over the same time, employers have also learned which functions need an in-person staff to perform. When acquiring new talent, it is vital to determine if they need to be in the office full time, part time, fully remote or remote just until vaccination rates are sufficient to ensure the safety of in-person workers. If you want someone who is completely remote it changes the entire calculation.
Hire Self-Starters
These employees will get stuff done even if they are secluded. They still need direction but wont necessarily need specific tasks to be productive. They have forward momentum/tempo and get work done. Live fire scenarios are an effective way to evaluate a prospective employees qualities like initiative and problems solving which are common attributes among effective remote workers.
Clear, Concise Communication
Clear communication becomes more important when managing remote workers. Nearly half (46 percent) of remote workers said the best managers checked in frequently and regularly, according to a study outlined in theHarvard Business Review.
Focus & Measure What Matters
Manage expectations and stay focused on goals when embracing a remote workforce. The focus needs to be on what is being accomplished, not necessarily what is being done. It is all about accomplishments, not activity.Use Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) to identify your company strategy and help employees see how they are contributing to the big picture and align with other teams. OKRs need to be reviewed regularly, ideally weekly and quarterly.
Weekly 1:1s
You can never give enough feedback. Recurring weekly meetings with each team member are critical. These meetings are critical for discussing work progress, but also allows managers to evaluate how the member is doing professionally and personally. Three questions should always be discussed:
Team Meetings
Set aside regular times every week for an all-hands meeting. If time zones prevent this, try to arrange two meetings, in differing time zones. Cover what the team is working on, give details on any decisions that may affect the team and reiterate that you want feedback and open communication. Having these regular meetings helps the entire team share news and encourage motivation.
In-Person Collaboration
In-person interaction is valuable for any team, but even more so for teleworkers. There is undeniably something unique that happens when teammates collaborate in person. Additionally, try to convene the team quarterly somewhere for a fun, social event. As restrictions are lifted and employees vaccinated, there will be more opportunities to strengthen the team through in-person events. Virtual happy hours, fundraisers and brown bags may not be as effective as in-person events, but it can still help the team come together until it is safe to meet in person.
Reliable Tools
If you havent already, invest in reliable tools to make virtual collaboration possible. Then train your personnel and develop clear processes to use these tools. If remote employees can't download files, struggle hearing on a conference call, and consistently receive meeting invitations for times when they are still asleep, you have failed to address the basics.
Embrace Video
Its important to turn on webcams because non-verbal communication provides valuable meaning in interactions. Video provides a positive feedback cycle that engages participants because they can see the speakers expressions, movement, energy and passion. Lighting and background are also very important and shouldnt be ignored.
Choose the Best Tools
There is not one tool that will meet all your teams needs. Most teams use a handful of tools, especially as they grow and evolve. Managers must ensure their team is equipped and prepared by staying informed about the latest tools and resources.
Embracing teleworking
The challenge for leaders and managers is to bring simplicity, harmony and opportunity and this can be complicated by telework. However, it is important to recognize that popularity of telework is likely to continue long after the pandemic ends, so savvy leaders will embrace this change and institute systems and processes that help bolster the productivity of a team that are unlikely to meet face to face on a regular basis.
