Researchers intend to discover microbiome’s role in personalized nutrition – Nebraska Today

Posted: May 24, 2021 at 8:13 pm

Personalized nutrition has emerged in recent years as a key potential solution to a variety of diseases that originate in the gut, and Nebraska scientists are mining microbiome data to determine how individuals digestive systems might respond to different nutritionalapproaches.

Ultimately, these findings could help scientists and doctors recommend specific types of foods say, yogurts to individuals to nurture beneficial bacteria in their guts and stave off diseases such as diabetes andobesity.

Yanbin Yin, associate professor of food science at the University of NebraskaLincoln, has received a four-year, $1.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue his research. Yins lab develops computational models and informatics tools to identify carbohydrate-active enzymes CAZymes in the gut microbiome that can build, modify and break down various complex carbohydrates. These CAZymes are made by our gut bacteria to fully digest fibers in our diets. Bacterial digestion of these fibers produces metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids, that have a significant influence on their human hosts health, Yinsaid.

However, every human individual has different microbiome compositions and thus may respond to the same dietary fibers differently, Yin said. We aim to develop machine learning tools to help predict which human individuals may respond to which dietary fibers by analyzing their gut microbiome DNAsequences.

Yin and his co-investigator, Yuzhen Zhou, assistant professor of statistics at Nebraska, will develop new computer software that can automate the data mining of these sequencing data for CAZymes and their gene clusters. Finding these gene clusters will contribute to addressing two fundamental personalized nutritionquestions:

Creating new bioinformatics tools for predicting carbohydrate use will contribute to the arising microbiome-based personalized nutrition practice and aid in the development of therapeutic options to prevent and treat human metabolicdisorders.

The software Yin is creating can analyze and classify CAZymes at a more detailed level than ever before. It looks for key features within genetic code to distinguish among different CAZyme groups and predict how the enzymesfunction.

The computer algorithms learn and improve as data is added. Yin started his research with a CAZyme database, CAZy, compiled from the scientific literature and maintained by other researchers. Hes been using the database to train his CAZyme discovery software and has packaged the software into a free, user-friendly website, dbCAN, for CAZymeresearchers.

Yin has more than 10 years of experience in developing CAZyme bioinformatics tools and maintains the well-recognized CAZyme annotation database and web server. His CAZyme bioinformatics research has been funded by an NSF CAREER award.

Yins work is affiliated with the Nebraska Food for Health Center, launched in September 2016, which brings together faculty researchers from the University of NebraskaLincoln, the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the University of Nebraska at Omaha to tie gastrointestinal and biomedical research to agriculture, plant and animal breeding, andgenetics.

Modern theories of human evolution foreshadowed by Darwin’s Descent of Man – Science Magazine

Posted: at 8:13 pm

BACKGROUND

Charles Darwins The Descent of Man, published on 24 February 1871, laid the grounds for scientific studies into human origins and evolution. We look at the advances in our understanding of these processes through the lenses of modern speciation theory. Applying this theory to specific cases requires one to identify and understand the nature of (i) the ancestor and various preexisting adaptations and traits that it possessed that allowed or simplified the speciation process, (ii) evolutionary forces responsible for major differences between the emergent species and its close relatives, and (iii) the most salient adaptations characteristic of the new species and its evolutionary history (such as genetic, morphological, behavioral, spatial, and temporal).

Modern research shows that we share many developmental, physiological, morphological, cognitive, and psychological characteristics as well as about 96% of our DNA with the anthropoid apes. We now know that since our last common ancestor with the other apes 6 million to 8 million years ago, human evolution followed the path common for other species with diversification into closely related species and some subsequent hybridization between them. Since Darwin, a long series of unbridgeable gaps have been proposed between humans and other animals. They focused on tool-making, cultural learning and imitation, empathy, prosociality and cooperation, planning and foresight, episodic memory, metacognition, and theory of mind. However, new insights from neurobiology, genetics, primatology, and behavioral biology only reinforce Darwins view that most differences between humans and higher animals are of degree and not of kind. What makes us different is that our ancestors evolved greatly enhanced abilities for (and reliance on) cooperation, social learning, and cumulative culturetraits emphasized already by Darwin. Cooperation allowed for environmental risk buffering, cost reduction, and the access to new resources and benefits through the economy of scale. Learning and cumulative culture allowed for the accumulation and rapid spread of beneficial innovations between individuals and groups. The enhanced abilities to learn from and cooperate with others became a universal tool, removing the need to evolve specific biological organs for specific environmental challenges. These human traits likely evolved as a response to increasing high-frequency climate changes on the millennial and submillennial scales during the Pleistocene. Once the abilities for cumulative culture and extended cooperation were in place, a suite of subsequent evolutionary changes became possible and likely unavoidable. In particular, human social systems evolved to support mothers through the recruitment of males and nonreproductive females. The most distinctive feature of our species, language, appeared arguably driven by selection for simplifying cooperation. Reliance on social learning and conformity led to the emergence of new factors constraining and driving human behavior, such as morality, social norms, and social institutions. These forces often act against the immediate biological or material interests of individuals, promoting instead the interests of the society as a whole or of its powerful segments. Continuous engagement in cooperation has led to the evolution of strong coalitionary psychology, which can bring us together whenever we perceive that our identity group faces outside threats. Coalitionary psychology also has an undesirable byproduct: often negative or even hostile reaction to others who differ from us in their looks, behaviors, beliefs, caste, or class.

Our society faces challenges, including climate change; various types of inequality; economic crises; political, cultural, and religious conflicts; and pandemics. Similar challenges have repeatedly arisen and were dealt with in the past with varying success. What makes the current situation different is not only the scale of societal threats but also that modern science can provide guidance on how to respond to them. Adequately answering these challenges requires understanding humans social behavior and the roles of cooperation, social learning, and culture for human decision-making. Evolutionary perspective is already helping to synthesize the contributions of social sciences, including anthropology, psychology, economics, political science, and history. The impact of Descent on the social sciences and on the development and implementation of different policies by practitioners and policymakers to improve our society will only grow.

(Left) Organic evolution and (right) cultural evolution, as depicted in Alfred L. Kroebers 1923 textbook Anthropology: Cultural Patterns and Processes. Biological inheritance is rigid from parents to offspring in eukaryotes, and species mostly do not exchange genes. Culture is potentially acquired from anyone in a persons social network, and ideas spread rather readily from culture to culture.

As an island region, the Caribbean isnt the easiest place to build. And even within the Caribbean, construction takes place in extremely remote destinations particularly offshore or private islands with little to no infrastructure and where transportation is a challenge.

But even more difficult is facilitating a place for the workers themselves to stay.

Thats where Gulf Land Structures comes in a company thats become a Caribbean leader in building in challenging environments by using modular construction to provide housing and bedspace for construction workers.

To learn more, we talked to Josh Vice, vice president and partner at Gulf Land Structures.

Tell us about the market for Gulf Land Structures. Who uses them and for what

. Since our inception in 2007 we have been primarily focused on servicing the offshore energy sector. The modules were designed to meet rigorous safety requirements along with withstanding hurricane force winds which is a requirement for offshore. We quickly realized our modules could be utilized for disaster response on barge camps and on land because they can be quickly mobilized and fully self-sufficient power, water, waste. Some of the same challenges that we were accustomed to apply to the Caribbean where the economics of putting workers in hotels does not make sense. We can house a worker anywhere at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional housing.

Are you seeing more demand right now for modular construction? Why?

Yes, we see some encouraging demand for our modules as there are multiple large-scale developments currently taking place and in planning throughout the Caribbean. Our modules are perfect for projects in these remote islands where there is not much if any infrastructure in place. In addition to development projects our modules are a good fit for housing disaster relief workers. After hurricane Irma we housed several hundred relief workers in Puerto Rico. We were able to quickly deploy the modules to provide immediate relief to the disaster-stricken areas.

Is the Caribbean a good market for Gulf Land Structures?

Yes, we believe so because developers are wanting more and more to give their clients access to seclusion on these beautiful and natural islands. With seclusion comes remoteness to infrastructure and thats where Gulf Land comes in. We come in install our modules, we can supply power, water and anything required to support a life camp. Since we are temporary once the project is complete, we remove all the equipment with minimal or no impact on the environment. The Caribbean is susceptible to hurricanes and because of the extensive design criteria that our modules are built to in order withstand storm force winds it makes them a perfect fit for this region. It is worth mentioning when hurricane Doiron hit Bahamas in 2019 our modules in Ocean Cay were unscathed.

Is the market worldwide and can Gulf Land deliver worldwide?

Yes, the market is worldwide or anywhere additional bedspace is needed. Gulf Land can deliver anywhere, although mobilization cost can make our solution economically unfavorable depending on how far away the project is. The Caribbean is a region where our assets are strategically positioned.

What if there is no existing infrastructure? Can you still use a Gulf Land Structure?

Of course, this is where our solution excels. Just give us a clear site to install the camp and we can handle everything else. Clean potable water, power, housing, offices, anything you need in regard to housing that way you can focus on completing the project. In addition to limited infrastructure limited site space is where we also excel. For example, in St Maarten we were able to house 300 workers in a resort parking lot by stacking our modules while the resort was being renovated.

What is the most remote location you have served?

Ocean Cay Marine Reserve in Bahamas. We housed approximately 500 workers for 18 months with a totally self-sufficient camp. This island had little to no infrastructure when we arrived and once complete the island was transformed into a beautiful natural habitat for wildlife while at the same time a wonderful place for guest to relax and enjoy the beautiful blue waters of the Bahamas.

What does the pricing for structureslook like?

Pricing varies depending on how many workers the client wants to sleep in each module and the existing infrastructure available for power, and water to support the camp. These types of things along with the location of the island is what drives pricing.

What else can you tell us about your clients?

We have a broad client base ranging from Oil & Gas, large construction, engineering, developers, cruise lines, department of defense, FEMA and other companies that specialize in disaster recovery. Our clients have come to trust us over the years based on our extensive experience in housing what many of them consider their most important assets, their people.

Survey reveals who’s willing to cruise – News – University of Florida – University of Florida

Posted: at 8:12 pm

Despite pandemic complications, 30% of travelers would consider cruising next year, a survey from the University of Florida shows, with fans of cruising even more willing to get onboard.

Among avowed cruise lovers, 29.6% were ready to set sail in April 2021, while nearly half (46.3%) would cruise next year. Among those who didnt identify as cruise lovers, 6.5% were willing to cruise in April 2021 and 23% would consider cruising in 2022.

Cruise lovers are eager to sail again, said Rachel Fu, Ph.D., director of the Eric Friedheim Tourism Institute at the University of Florida and chair of the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management in UFs College of Health and Human Performance. Theyll come back as soon as they feel its safe.

In the online survey of 1,540 U.S. citizens in February-April 2021, cruise lovers were defined as people who have a high intention to take a cruise when the industry reopens, with the majority having cruised previously. Across all respondents, willingness to cruise was linked to vaccine acceptance, with those open to the vaccine reporting a higher intention to take a cruise.

The self-contained nature of cruise ships and their private islands (shore excursions remain a question mark) essentially creates a bubble, Fu points out.

If handled correctly, cruising could be very safe, since it is a controlled environment, she said.

For travelers uncertain about when to jump into cruising, Furecommends getting specific with your concerns. What questions need to be addressed for you to come back to cruising? What are your barriers? she says. You might want to know whether and how the ship will verify that passengers are vaccinated, or how it will handle any cases that might arise during the itinerary, for example. Share those questions with the cruise line, Fu suggests.

Providers want to be sure they deserve customers trust by having the proper resources and well-trained employees, she said. Cruise lines want to spread happiness, not coronavirus.

Posted: at 8:12 pm

Hmm, Ive a feeling this months Netflix roundup might prove rather invaluable to you now that lockdown is officially over But anyway, irrespective of the world outside, you can find blockbuster films, hot new series, and thought-provoking documentaries unleashed on Netflix this month, ready and waiting to stream. Heres the best of what to watch on Netflix UK this June.

David Attenborough is back, continuing with his urgent message to protect our planet. Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planetwill uncover how humans have pushed beyond the thresholds of what the Earth can handle, with a worrying outcome for our planet. The documentary follows A Life On Our Planet, which gave a stark warning to audiences to do more for Mother Earth before its too late. The film was so hard-hitting, many viewers vowed to change their lifestyles. Watch it on June 4th.

Starring Jane The Virgin alumni Gina Rodriguez, Awakefollows former soldier Jill, who finds herself in a tricky situation when a mysterious catastrophe wipes out all electronics and takes away humanitys ability to sleep. When she discovers that her daughter may be the key to fixing it all, will she do whatever it takes to protect her family, or make the ultimate sacrifice to save mankind? Streaming from June 9th.

The most wanted man in France is returning for a second round, picking up where it left off with stakes even higher than before. Assane will be forced to deal with a detective on his trail, more Pelligrini-related drama, and a dramatic kidnapping that will force him into uncomfortable territory, with a promise to explore much more of the thiefs backstory as we delve deeper into the series. Binge-watch from June 111th.

Kevin Hart is back in the brand new comedy-drama Fatherhood, which follows a single dad whos forced to raise his daughter alone after his wife tragically dies just one day after giving birth. Inspired by a true story, the heartfelt movie explores fear, heartache and loss as Matthew (Hart) struggles in his journey to navigate his little girl through life alone. Watch it from June 18th.

For the property lovers among us, The Worlds Most Amazing Vacation Rentalsexplores some of the most breathtaking places to stay across the globe through three presenters eyes. The show leaves no corner of the world left undiscovered, showcasing some of the most impressive Airbnbs and rentals on private islands, some of the worlds best cities and so much more. Think Instant Hotel with a bit more glamour and way, way less drama, mixed with Caroline Quentins The Worlds Most Extraordinary Homes. Watch it from June 18th.

Big fan of Love Island? Then its likely youll be hooked on Too Hot To Handle. First airing during the lockdown 1.0 last spring, the show gained quite the following thanks to its raunchy, back-stabbing antics which saw contestants financially penalised if they got up to any steamy stuff while in the house including kissing! The concept challenges its mega-horny cast into restraining themselves for the full duration of their time in the villa, which sounds pretty simple, but to this lot it definitely isnt. Binge-watch from June 23rd.

Brand new comedy-drama Sex/Life is coming to Netflix this month, based on B.B. Eastons memoir 44 Chapters About 4 Men.After leaving her wild New York City life behind to start anew with her new husband in the suburbs, Billie finds herself pining for her old life, and writes a journal to express her feelings behind her husbands back. He, of course, inevitably finds it and decides to challenge himself to meet her needs combining her raunchy past with her new, suburban present. Showrunners have promised a whole lot of steamy scenes for the show, so its probably not one to watch with the parents. Stream it from June 25th.

Jason Momoa brings DC superhero Aquaman to life in the characters first live-action origins movie, heading underwater on a mission to find the iconic Trident ofAtlan and fight for his rightful place as King of Atlantis. Also starring Nicole Kidman and Amber Heard (which you probably knew already), the film is ranked one of the best so far in the DCEU (their cinematic universe, for those who dont follow all that stuff), and is landing on Netflix sometime next month.

Yorkshire jeweller becomes an unexpected tourist attraction – in the Falkland Islands – The Yorkshire Post

Posted: at 8:12 pm

For the rest of the year, she looks out on an equally picturesque scene only the backdrop is the Falkland Islands where the Yorkshire jewellers business has become an unexpected tourist attraction.

The 29-year-old began splitting her time between North Yorkshire and the South Atlantic three years ago after meeting her partner Dan Biggs, a seventh generation Falkland Islander, when he was working as a PE teacher at Nidderdale High School.

She had initially intended to spend her time helping her partner establish a new outdoor adventure business, but after being offered a studio space and opening a shop, she has now become the first stop-off point for the thousands of cruise ship passengers and tourists who visit the archipelago each year.

Ms Clarke, who trained at the renowned Birmingham School of Jewellery, said: Dans mum works for The Penguin News newspaper (in the Falkland Islands) and when their little union office became empty she suggested I should inquire about setting up a workshop there.

I hadnt quite realised how big tourism is over here. During the main season we can get four cruise ships stopping off each day. Each carries up to 3,000 passengers which is more than the population of the capital of Stanley.

They come from all over the world and they love my accent and the story of how I ended up here.

Despite the pandemic halting the cruise industry, 2020 was Ms Clarkes busiest year to date with orders both from locals on the island and overseas private commissions booming.

She said: I have really immersed myself in nature over here. I launched a new collection called Archipelago which is inspired by the flora and fauna here, particularly the patterns of the giant sea kelp and ferns.

Living here has definitely influenced my practice. Many of my pieces showcase the semi-precious agates which wash up on the stores here. They are really beautiful and I get them finished by a stone-cutter based in Ilkley which is nice, as it feels as though the two parts of my life come together in my work.

Ms Clarke made her name using statement pieces which had been stained using tea and included wool from Wensleydale sheep.

She is continuing to experiment with the fleece of the Falkland Islands flock and, having learnt to sea kayak, she is determined to incorporate more of the landscape in her work.

She added: When I first moved out here I did worry that I would miss the Yorkshire hills and Pateley Bridge, but very quickly I fell in love with the ocean. From my studio I can see the mountains in the background and sometimes a group of sea lions or dolphins will swim by.

Its a very special place and perhaps because its a farming community you get that same homely feeling as you do back in Yorkshire. The only difference is that while the Falkland Islands is definitely more remote, I am closer here to the nearest shop than I am back home in Yorkshire.

Travel restrictions permitting, Ms Clarke hopes to make the 16-hour flight back home in June to continue her business working out of a purpose-built studio in the garden of her parents home.

She said: I definitely feel like I could spend the full year in the Falkland Islands, but at the moment I am enjoying having the best of both worlds.
