DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "Probiotics Market Report 2020-2027" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

The probiotics market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.6% from 2020 to 2027 to reach $75.9 billion by 2027.

The growth of this market is mainly attributed to growing consumer awareness regarding the health benefits of probiotics, increasing use of probiotics as an alternative to antibiotics, and growing research programs on probiotics for new applications.

Moreover, the growing use of probiotics for children and e-commerce growth is expected to create lucrative opportunities for players operating in this market. However, complex regulations related to probiotics are expected to hinder the growth of this market to some extent.

Based on strain, the yeast strain products segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The increasing use of yeast strain in animal feed & functional food and the rising use of probiotics as an alternative to antibiotics are the major drivers for the growth of this segment. Besides, increasing demand for yeast strain-based medicines due to proven positive results for reducing the risk of chronic diseases is expected to boost its demand in the forecast period.

Based on product type, the functional food & beverages segment is expected to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this market is mainly attributed to the rising health and wellness trends; growing consumer interest for functional food, particularly probiotics that can support digestive health; and the growing application of probiotics in yogurt.

Based on form, the dry form segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Dry probiotics offer advantages, such as better handling & transport, ease of use, affordability, and the ability to avoid costly formulation mistakes.

Based on sales channel, the probiotics market is segmented into offline and online sales. The offline sales segment is expected to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this segment is mainly attributed to the rising interest in healthy eating habits, growing number of pharmacies, and the expanding probiotics supplements industry.

Based on end user, the animals segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The animal probiotics sector has witnessed significant growth due to the growing pressure regarding reducing the use of antibiotics in feed. Further, the growing awareness among pet owners, cattle farmers, and hobbyists regarding the advantages of probiotics for animal health offer significant opportunities for players operating in the animal probiotics market.

Geographically, Asia-Pacific is expected to command the major share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The leading position of the region is primarily attributed to the increased consumer awareness regarding digestive health, immunity, and overall wellness; growing number of diabetics and overweight people; increasing demand for non-dairy probiotics food; the presence of key players in the digestive health products marketspace; and rising innovations in probiotics formulations.

The report includes a competitive landscape based on an extensive assessment of the key strategic developments adopted by the leading market participants in the probiotics market over the last four years (2017-2020).

44% of older millennials already have a chronic health condition. Heres what that means for their futures – CNBC

Posted: at 8:21 pm

As millennials begin to turn 40 in 2021, CNBC Make It has launchedMiddle-Aged Millennials, a series exploring how the oldest members of this generation have grown into adulthood amid the backdrop of the Great Recession and the Covid-19 pandemic, student loans, stagnant wages and rising costs of living.

Every morning, Kristin Bennett starts her day off by swallowing about 14 different supplements and vitamins designed to help her keep the worst symptoms of her disease at bay.

Bennett has relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, a central nervous system disease she's been dealing with for about 20 years after being diagnosed in 2001. She just turned 40 last month.

Health conditions like Bennett's can take a toll, both financially and emotionally. And unfortunately, as the oldest millennials start to hit 40, many are finding themselves coping with chronic health conditions more so than previous generations, according to some recent research.

About 44% of older millennials born between 1981 and 1988 report having been diagnosed with at least one chronic health condition, according to a recent survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of CNBC Make It among over 4,000 U.S. adults, about 830 of whom were between the ages 33 to 40.

There's "no question" that some emerging evidence shows many millennials are unhealthier than predicted, says Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association.

"Hypertension, diabetes and obesity drives a lot of that," Benjamin says, adding that the obesity epidemic may be one of the root causes of the rise in rates of hypertension, diabetes and even certain types of cancer. Benjamin also says that studies show millennials are far less likely to be smokers, making diseases related to smoking less common.

Among the older millennials surveyed by CNBC Make It, migraine headaches, major depression and asthma are the three most common ailments. Type 2 diabetes and hypertension round out the top five.

The prevalence of these diseases not only affects millennials' health and lifespan, but also their bank accounts. Studies show those with at least one chronic condition spend twice as much on out-of-pocket health-care expenses than those without any medical issues. Those with two concurrent chronic health issues spend five times as much.

Those under 65 with circulatory system diseases, such as high blood pressure and heart conditions, spend more than $1,500 a year on out-of-pocket costs, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. The average health insurance plan participant without a chronic condition pays just $778 a year out of pocket.

Over the course of a lifetime, those costs can add up especially if a patient is diagnosed at a younger age.

Beyond out-of-pocket spending, millennials with a chronic health condition also could see their annual income reduced by as much as $4,500 per person due to medical expenses and even reduced work hours or job loss because of poor health, according to a 2019 report from Moody's Analytics that analyzed data from Blue Cross Blue Shield Health.

"At the end of the day, if these trends continue, then you'll have higher health-care costs," Benjamin says. "You'll be exchanging the baby boomer generation for a generation with even higher health-care costs just because of normal inflation and the fact these chronic diseases are there."

Kristin Bennett has been dealing with her MS for almost 20 years.

Source: Kristin Bennett

To help keep her symptoms at bay,Bennett takes about a dozen supplements each morning, as well as other vitamins throughout the day. All told, she spends about $400 a month on more than 20 different vitamins, as well as powdered supplements she adds to drinks and smoothies. Bennett also sees a naturopathic doctor about once a month, a massage therapist when she can and attends physical therapy as needed. Those types of services can typically range from $75 to$150per session.

But despite all the effort, Bennett started to experience flare-ups in 2018 that have persisted through the coronavirus pandemic, including falls, double vision and even trouble walking and standing for long periods. An avid gardener, one of her more serious falls ended with her hitting her head on a wooden stake after tripping outside of her home in Clinton, Washington.

Yet Bennett's health-care costs could be much higher. For eight years after her diagnosis, she was on medications that, without insurance, generally cost patients between $5,000 and $50,000 a year.

When she lost her job in 2009, Bennett spent most of her unemployment benefits paying for COBRA insurance to ensure she had coverage for both her medication and her pregnancy. But Bennett, now a mother of three, couldn't keep up with the costs and eventually stopped taking prescription medications in favor of a less expensive, more alternative medicine route.

Getting diagnosed with MS has given Bennett the mindset that anything can completely change at any given moment. "I don't really know what the future will bring," she says. "I'm still hoping that I can walk well again, but I also know that might not happen, and I might need a wheelchair someday."

While older millennials are experiencing higher rates of chronic health conditions, it may not be strictly due to declining health. The implementation of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, also known as Obamacare, increased access to health-care providers for many Americans. This was especially importantfor younger Americans, who were given the option to stay on their parents' health insurance plans until they were 26.

This helped more college students and recent grads afford and seek out medical care when they needed it. "It is true that we have improved access to care," Benjamin says. But, "when you improve access to care, then you see more people and you identify more health problems."

While that does potentially increase disease rates, it can be a good thing, Benjamin says. Identifying health problems early leads to better long-term outcomes, including longer life spans.

For Brady Dixon, doctors were able to catch his Type 2 diabetes early, when he was only 29.

Brady Dixon, who lives in Oklahoma City, was diagnosed with Type II diabetes in 2015.

Source: Brady Dixon

Doctors diagnosed Dixon, now 35, with diabetes after a routine health exam for work uncovered critically high blood sugar levels in 2015. Although doctors were able to catch his condition before any real complications arose, diabetes is one of the most expensive chronic diseases to treat in the U.S. today. Those diagnosed with diabetes have an average of $16,750 in annual medical expenditures, $9,600 of which is attributed directly to diabetes, according to 2018 research from the American Diabetes Association.

For Oklahoma-based Dixon, the major costs have been his medication and food. After the first drug prescribed to Dixon left him sick for hours, he switched to another that he tolerated better, but more expensive. A month's supply of the drug, Trulicity, costs an average of$985 without insurance and $48 with insurance, according to GoodRx.

Dixon earns about $58,000 a year working in IT and spends about $200 more per month on food than he did before his diagnosis. But budgeting for specialty groceries and healthier takeout meals can be challenging, especially with jobs that don't always pay well and $8,000 in student loans still left to pay off.

"I learned that food wasan under-the-radar cost of having diabetes," Dixon says. "Yes, if you cook everything at home, it's not that expensive. But the staples of cheap, easy food frozen pizza and ramen are both death to a diabetic."

As older millennials age, their habits, history and even world events will continue to impact their health. The pandemic will likely result in new shifts in health trends and potentially lead to an influx of diagnoses over the next year, Benjamin says.

While Covid-19 may not have been as fatal for younger Americans, including older millennials, many of those who contracted the disease experience ongoing symptoms months after recovery. In fact, studies show between 50% and 80% of recovered patients have persistent side effects for up to three months after their initial positive test.

Beyond Covid, the pandemic has led to a dramatic decrease in Americans visiting the doctor, Benjamin says. About 70% of physicians surveyed by the American Medical Association reported providing fewer appointments since the crisis started, including both in-person and virtual. Emergency room visits were down 25% in December 2020 and January 2021 compared with a year earlier, according to CDC data.

"Because we've been sequestered in our homes for a year, people have not gotten the screenings and medical care they need," Benjamin says. "As people go back to the doctor, we're going to find cancers that should have been caught earlier, we're going to find people who didn't get their immunizations, we're going to find the diabetes that was not diagnosed because they weren't at the doctor."

Increased diagnoses also means that more Americans may be paying higher health-care costs over the short and even long term if the health conditions are chronic.

That's been the case for Dixon, whose medication and food costs came to a head during the pandemic. He was laid off from his job in IT in March 2020 and on unemployment for six months last year. COBRA would've cost about $2,000 a month, so he didn't sign up. Instead, he stopped taking his medication and tried to get by simply monitoring his sugar levels and diet.

Last August, Dixon was finally able to secure a contractor IT role that turned into a full-time position in November. When he finally went to see a doctor covered under his new health insurance earlier this year, his sugar levels were critically high to the point where his risk of kidney and eye damage had increased.

His doctor put him back on Trulicity and added another medication to the routine as well. Thankfully his new job offers decent health insurance, so between that and discount drug programs, Dixon is spending $40 a month out of pocket for his medications.

Although he's getting back on track with his career and health, Dixon, who's still single, can't help but feel frustrated that he's not further along in his life. "I expected to own my own home between 25 and 30, and be married with children," he says.

"There are two things I think that really messed with the American dream for me. One is my student loans and the other is health problems."

CNBC Make It will be publishing more stories in the Middle-Aged Millennials series around student loans, employment, wealth, diversity and health. If you're an older millennial (ages 33 to 40),share your story with usfor a chance to be featured in a future installment.

Study reveals mental health benefits of prebiotics in young females – NutraIngredients.com

Posted: at 8:21 pm

Evidence from the double-blind study suggest the efficacy of galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS)prebiotics is particularly pronounced in young adults with trait (personality-related) anxiety, although significant reductions in state (reactive) anxiety levels were also observed.

Previous research suggests modifying microbial diversity through intake of psychobiotics (probiotics and prebiotics) helps reduce stress, anxiety and depression in a matter of days, as well as improving brain function.

The findings at Surrey university support prevailing theories on the benefits of prebiotics, but this study focused specifically on young adults from late adolescence to early adulthood, which is considered a key developmental stage when nutritional supplementation has the potential to offset health-related illnesses in later adulthood.

It has been repeatedly shown that the transitional period from adolescence to adulthood represents an important developmental juncture for both the emergence of social anxietyand the development of emotion control abilities, which allow the individual to control their fear responses and anxiety, the report states.

Our study adopted a two-pronged approach which would allow us to shed light on this unique transitional period into early adulthood from both a mental health and gut microbiota angle.

Study method

The 4-week study examined the effects of GOS prebiotic supplements on gut-microbiota, emotional behaviour, and the well-being of 64 female volunteers (aged 18-25 years). Participants had no current or previous clinical problems and were not habitual users of prebiotic or probiotic supplements.

They were all screened for trait anxiety scores on the STAI-Trait subscale 44 and a custom programme was used to blindly randomise them into the supplement or placebo group.

The volunteers received either a daily 7.5g dose of prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) or a placebo (maltodextrin and dried glucose syrup) in powder form for a period of 28 days.

Two 4-day food diaries were completed to assess nutrient intake and monitor compliance to dietary requirements. These were analysed by team members for energy and macro- and micronutrient intakes.

Self-report and psychological self-assessment questionnaires were used to assess mood, emotion regulation and sleep in order to classify trait anxiety levels.

Our protocol for supplement group assignment and resultant normative distribution of self-reported trait anxiety levels in our sample afforded the opportunity for us to stratify the supplement intervention groups by median trait anxiety into high anxious (e.g. scores40) or low anxious (e.g. scores<40) groups to consider the effects and interactions of GOS and general anxiety levels.

We focused on trait anxiety as this is characterised as a relatively stable feature enduring over a period of time rather than a transient and situational feeling as measured by the state subscale of the STAI.

Volunteers were also required to participate in attentional dot-probe tasks and exposed to negative, positive, and neutral word pairs in masked and unmasked conditions to elicit emotional responses.

Healthy bacteria

The team observed increased Bifidobacterium in the GOS group compared with the placebo group, which supports current evidence that Bifidobacterium bacteria has a positive effect on mental well-being. In addition, it was noted that prebiotic bacteria may help prevent the growth of less beneficial bacteria and contribute to improved well-being in young adults displaying symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Dr Kathrin Cohen Kadosh, at the universitys developmental cognitive neuroscience department, adds: This new research marks a significant step forward in that we were able to show that we can use a simple and safe food supplement such as prebiotics to improve both the abundance of beneficial gut bacteria and to improve mental health and well-being in young women.

The report maintains that nutritional supplementation could help stabilise negative emotional symptoms triggered by microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) influences in the latter stages of maturation that subsequently govern lifelong behaviours.

On a newID the Future episode, historian Richard Weikart (Cal State Stanislaus) dissects a new Cambridge University Pressbook on social Darwinismby Jeffrey OConnell and Michael Ruse. Weikart, author ofHitlers Ethic,From Darwin to Hitler,Hitlers Religion, andThe Death of Humanity, says that a major shortcoming of the new book is the authors attempt to put as much distance as possible between Darwin and eugenics thinking, and between Darwin and Hitler. Download the podcast or listen to it here.

The new book paints Darwins follower Herbert Spencer (pictured above) as the eugenics-championing bad guy and posits that Darwin and Darwinism had little or no influence on Hitlers warped master race ethic. Weikart patiently highlights some key evidence to the contrary, statements front and center in Hitlers writing. Did Darwin cause Hitler? No. Would Darwin have approved of Hitler? Almost certainly not. But according to Weikart, Darwins own racist and pro-eugenics thinking, combined with some implications of his theory that he himself explicitly recognized, manifestly did lay the groundwork for Hitlers diabolical outlook on the master race, the struggle for life, war, and eugenics.

The ruthless politics of the Centres vaccine strategy – The Indian Express

Posted: at 8:20 pm

In the face of Indias catastrophic pandemic, the tongue goes silent and the pens fall dry. What can one say that is meaningful? There is seldom any consoling story to be told about grief or mass suffering. There are brave journalists bearing witness. But what does bearing witness do in a culture of official nationalism where the images of death offend more than death itself? There is an urgent need to fix several policies. But what do policy proposals mean, when all policy is about managing headlines, not achieving an objective? There is a need to fix accountability. But how does accountability get fixed when so many institutional sinews from federalism to bureaucracy have snapped? There is justifiable anger at the Prime Minister, whose self-obsessive callousness and abdication of leadership has contributed immeasurably to the current crisis. But in the case of this government, anger seems misplaced. Anger presumes a leader who is standing within the space of reason, where the point of anger is to restore a certain reciprocity between citizen and leader. Anger is completely beside the point, when you have an imperious leader, who has come to mistake the hologram of his own mendacity for reality. In any case, the scenes of suffering make even anger a luxury; there are more urgent tasks to be attended to.

The only empowering thought in this context has been the splendid work that professionals, frontline government workers, health professionals and volunteers are doing to compensate for massive state failure. The extraordinary mobilisation of civic action whether in supplying oxygen or cremating the dead has been exemplary. These are, of course, sometimes limited by class and geography, but it would be churlish to deny the depth of commitment of what we are witnessing. This civic commitment has helped mitigate suffering. It provides slivers of solidarity in a politics that has long forgotten that word.

India has always been a tough place; the callousness that comes with inequality is deeply inscribed in our social structure. Politics was supposed to mitigate at least the harshest edges of this inequality. Instead, what we are seeing in the politics of the BJP is the unleashing of an unvarnished social Darwinism, a ruthless exercise of power on behalf of the powerful: Majorities against minorities, state against dissenters, and big capital against small. The spectre of more repression being unleashed to manage the post-pandemic discontent cannot be ruled out. The question is this: Will these rudiments of public solidarity on display counter deadly social Darwinism that our official politics has become?

Perhaps, a good test case is something urgent: A reconsideration of our vaccine policy. The three basic ingredients of a vaccine policy for a pandemic of this kind are clear. Do whatever it takes to make sure there are enough supplies (the right procurement contract, capital subsidies, capacity expansion, and, if need be, the suspension of intellectual property rights). Centrally procure vaccines, but give states operational flexibility. And distribute them free. This is essentially what the United States did. And do all of this as fast as possible, if we are to prevent new mutants from arising.

Instead, what we got in vaccine policy is a bizarre combination of ruthlessness and managing the headlines. First, there is a scarcity of vaccines and will be for a while because we did not get our capacity expansion and procurement contracts right. Then you had the pandemic surge in some states, which raised two questions: How much operational flexibility can be given to the states? And how much does it make sense to reallocate vaccines to states or districts where they are most urgently needed? These questions could have been easily resolved by a modicum of trust building. But instead, we try to cover up the scarcity and prioritisation question by managing the headline. We unleash a Darwinian competition between states on procurement. The demands of the states could have been resolved in better ways. Now some states will make the vaccines free. But there is a greater opportunity cost to the states doing this. They have less resources than the Centre. And there is high probability that they will divert money from other essential services.

Then, to deflect attention we open up vaccinations for all age groups. The controlled media claps. But you have exacerbated the problem: If supplies are scarce, opening it up to a free-for-all accentuates the allocation problem. Now allocation will be based on whoever can lay their hands on the vaccine, not what is best suited to combat the virus and reduce health burdens. You then say there will be differential pricing. In essence, those who can afford to get them at private sector rates shall get them more easily. The argument is that they will cross-subsidise. This is a specious argument; if people want to genuinely fund cross-subsidies in health, better to collect it as taxes and create public goods, not distribute vaccines as a privileged good under scarcity.

In the meantime, our supply strategy is still not clear. There are no reliable schedules of production targets. You offer Serum Institute of India what seems like an unsustainable price, and slow their capacity expansion, by delaying whatever capital subsidies were necessary. Bharat Biotech then announces a price that is too high, and surely the Prime Minister will step in to reduce the price and claim credit. Meanwhile, you have to wonder at this. India and South Africa have, at the WTO, rightly called for a temporary suspension of patents on COVID-19 vaccines. Why dont we set an example and do this ourselves with Bharat Biotech and take away its production rights? Let any company produce the vaccine. There are ways of doing this that still allow the company to make enough money and invest in R&D. It will also be a better way of positioning Indian brands and India globally than to try and position yourself as a monopoly supplier. In any case, some of the research is publicly funded and should be treated as a public good.

In miniature, this is an illustration of how vaccine policy is made. There is no logic of incentives or cross-subsidies or a free market in these decisions. There is no epidemiological logic. This is ad hoc social Darwinism. The strong do what they can, the weak suffer what they must. A perfect metaphor for our healthcare system. This is the moment to convert private acts of kindness into demands for a different public health culture. We can start by demanding a reconsideration of our vaccine strategy, and then think of larger political change.

Darwinism, Lamarckism And Epigenetics Unify The Theory Of Evolution – – Technology Times Pakistan

Posted: at 8:20 pm

In A Nutshell, Evolution Can Be Explained Better On Molecular Basis With The Unification Of Neo-Lamarckism And Neo-Darwinism.

The coalesce subject of modern biology is based on the Darwins theory of evolution, the process of natural selection, organisms change with the course of time and the fittest ones are selected by the nature to reproduce and survive. Such changes bring new variants of species. At that time when Darwin gave the concept of evolution it lacked the explanation on molecular basis. But modern genetics and molecular biology have given us the outline of how evolution happens I.e. neo-Darwinism.

But several studies have suggested that there exist some other molecular factors that contribute prominently in the pipeline of evolution of some species. There is also a problem with the Darwin theory that the mutation rate of complex organisms is too slow to explain the changes contribute in the process of evolution. Scientists compensate this by proposing different genetic theories like genetic drift and epistasis. Hence, swift origination of some traits is difficult to explain on the basis of classical genetics.

Some other questions also arose the answers to them are hard to give just relying on the theories of Darwin and classical genetics like why identical twins, having the same genes, generally catch different types of diseases as if phenotype is genetic based? How is it possible that environmental contaminants can change the assault of disease, rendering the DNA Sequences? Why the phenotypic trait divergence rate is higher than the genetic mutations and variations?

Answers to above mentioned questions partly can be explained by Lamarckism, according to Lamarcks theory of evolution, environment has great effect on phenotype of organisms and these changes could pass to next progeny, same concept had been proposed by a developmental biologist Conrad Waddington of the University of Edinburgh stated that fruit flies at the embyonic development stage if exposed to enivironmental contaminants or change in the temperature could bring about variations in the wings structures and that variations could also pass to next progeny. Waddington showed up with a modern term epigenetics to narrate this phenomenon of rapid change. That single generation variation was in support to Lamarcks theory as it was seen that environment could impact traits.

With the advancement in molecular biology and genetics, Lamarcks theory and Waddingtons concepts are now making some discernment. Several environmental factors can turn on and off many genes hence changing the expression of proteins in cells. Epigenetics, thus, involve several molecular processes that can change the gene expression without altering the DNA sequences. Epigenetic modifications include DNA methylation and histone modifications. Of them, DNA methylation, in which a methyl group attaches to cytosine at carbon number five, has extensively been explored. This methylation contributes in the gene expression, can permanently be acquired and pass over generations.

Histone modifications involve methylation, acetylation, phosphorylation, ubiquitylation, and sumoylation of histone proteins that are responsible for chromatin structure. These modifications can permanently change the gene expression. Non-coding RNAs is another type that bind to DNA, RNA, and proteins alter the gene expression regardless of DNA sequence. Hence these epigenetic modifications play crucial role in DNA expression regulation. One can conclude that genetics and epigenetics are highly interlinked.

If these epigenetic modifications are inheritable, known as Environmentally induced epigenetic transgenerational inheritance has been observed in many species, in plants, birds, rodents, insects, pigs and humans, can play a significant role in evolution. These modifications can run into minimum of ten generations to hundreds as in case of some plants. One example of this was observed by Carl Linnaeus in flowering plants I.e., heat-induced flowering trait, this altered trait had been persisted for hundred generations.

Changed environment effect on the biology of organism strongly goes in favor of Lamarckism as these alterations in traits could be observed in next progeny. Darwin also put forward the importance of environment in evolution process and if these environmental factors persist for large span of time, the changes we observe then go in correspondence with Lamarckism by epigenetic means.

A recent study was conducted on the speciation of finches, observed by Darwin on Galapagos islands, changes in phenotype no doubt were results from DNA mutations but an interesting thing that was explored is that epigenetics alterations(epimutations) are larger in number and more related to phylogenetic distance among species.

There are other more obvious evidence in support of epigenetics playing a critical role in evolution. In a nutshell, evolution can be explained better on molecular basis with the unification of neo-Lamarckism and neo-Darwinism, as both are responsible for evolution and highly interlinked. Infact, trait variations within the population can be increased by environmental epigenetics, which empower natural selection.

Scientists are now accepting the role of epigenetics in the process of evolution as evolution could not be justified just on the basis of classic theories of Darwin. Lamarcks concept with the addition of science of epigenetics cannot be just put back and ignored. By accepting, Lamarcks ideas there is no mean to disrespect the classical genetics and Darwinism. Indeed, there unification could change the understanding of evolutionary scientists and will help us to understand the insight concept of evolution. Genetics and epigenetics should not be considered as conflicting subjects. Evolutionary processes like genetic drift and genetic assimilation could easily be grasped with the understanding of epigenetics. Evolution explanation needs a unified theory combination of Darwinism and Lamarckism and integration of them would give us broad and better view of molecular causes that control life.

Recapping the 67th legislative session – KX NEWS

Posted: at 8:20 pm

In some ways, the 67th legislative session was unlike any other starting off with a court case over a district seat, pandemic protocols and eventually the expulsion of a lawmaker. During those unique circumstances, here are some of the bills that became law.

The governor and state health officer can no longer enact a mask mandate. That bill passed both chambers, and had the votes to overcome the governors veto.

I believe good people, when theyre educated and informed will make good decisions, Sen. Terry Wanzek said in support of the bill.

And you might see some better roads and bridges soon. A $680 million bipartisan bonding bill aims to improve infrastructure using legacy fund dollars.

Well this bill will be one of probably three bills coming through the legislature that will put Legacy money out into the state of North Dakota, investments, grants and so forth to help the people of this state move forward, Sen. Rich Wardner said.

Soon, schools will have immunity from lawsuits for posting the Ten Commandments in the classroom.

I certainly hope our teachers would be able to teach that as much as we teach Darwinism today, Sen. Janne Myrdal said.

Plus, a slew of gun-related bills passed, one of which makes North Dakota a stand-your-ground state, eliminating the duty to retreat before using deadly force, in some circumstances.

Its not saying you can shoot anybody you want. Its saying if you find yourself at risk of death or serious bodily harm, or a felony involving violence, you dont have to run away, Rep. Ben Koppelman said.

But lots of bills didnt pass.

Do you really think any person would change their gender and subject themselves to abuse just to win a track event, or play on a basketball team? Sen. JoNell Bakke said.

One that came close would have restricted transgender students participation in public school sports. The governor vetoed it, and the legislature almost overrode it but was four votes shy in the Senate.

Advocates of legalizing marijuana were also dealt a blow, with a bill that made it through the House but was snuffed out in the Senate.

The object is not to make it where theres no regulation whatsoever, but the idea is to say that this is a legal substance, but not that this is an unregulated legal substance, Rep. Marvin Nelson said.

The 47 senators and 94 representatives meet in Bismarck every two years.

Community Voices: Whoa, President Biden wants to raise taxes on the wealthy! – The Bakersfield Californian

Posted: at 8:20 pm

To ultra-conservatives, taxes are theft by the majority to take what they have no moral right to: the fruits of another person's labors. Democracy is undesirable because, to them, it allows a majority (the average citizen) to impose their will (social programs) on a minority (the wealthy).

A cabal of billionaires has been working for the last several decades to create an ultra-conservative libertarian society. Some of their propaganda organizations are the Cato Institute, the Reason Foundation, the Heritage Foundation, the Tax Foundation, the Leadership Institute, and others. They want to eliminate government-provided Social Security and Medicare, social programs, unemployment compensation, the graduated income tax, public schools and colleges, the United States Postal Service, the Environmental Protection Agency, and other programs that they believe are financed by taking money from the wealthy and giving it to the undeserved.

Ultra-conservatives want a return to an unfettered Lassaiz-faire capitalism that existed before the rise of labor unions. It was social Darwinism at its finest: robber barons, 12-hour work days, child labor, poor pay, cycles of recessions, unsafe working conditions and contaminated food. They only want a government for protecting their property and defending the country from foreign invasion; anything else is an abridgement of their freedom to make money by their own initiative any way they can. If you're not up to the task, that's your problem. Their attitude is that if workers feel exploited at their workplace, they can just look for another job somewhere else.

However, capitalism is a system devised by the very people that are bound to succeed in that system, that is, the brightest, the most aggressive, and sometimes the greediest. Without controls there is a tendency for employers to exploit their employees as the history of early capitalism has shown. Some people, like Herbert Spencer (1820-1903), who are champions of Laissez-faire capitalism, may say it's too bad some can't compete; it's just as well that they are winnowed out of society.

As to taxes, former Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. stated that taxes are the price we pay for civilization. However, the wealthy fail to realize they are profiting from a system set up by the framers of the Constitution that favors the land owning and monied class: those with the education and means to exploit the system. Also, they are not cognizant they are in that position by the luck of the draw; not everyone is born able to compete on an unfair playing field, and consequently the wealthy are ethically responsible to give back to society for the greater good of the country. Failure to do so only leads to more poverty, unemployment, crime, and eventually rebellion when things get out of hand.

Republican President D. Eisenhower had a 90 percent tax rate for the super rich during his administration. According to Eisenhower, the super rich could avoid the high taxes by investing their money in things that make America stronger. If they wanted to avoid high taxes, he said they could invest in business expansions and higher employee wages. The Eisenhower years generated enough taxes to launch and complete the labyrinth of interstate highways.

Ideally, we would have a society where we consider everyone as part of our human family and eligible for all rights and privileges. As with religious and secular humanists, we would have concern for all people without regard to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or station in life. We would have free health care for all through a government single-payer system similar to other advanced countries. We would eliminate the retributive death penalty as the vast majority of the countries of the world have done. Right now we stand ignobly with countries like Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Nigeria, Uganda and others.

We would attempt to be inclusive instead of divisive. In sum, we would have a nurturing, peaceful and cooperative society, somewhat like the Nordic countries. Our brutally competitive society, with its winners and losers, along with unemployment, poor pay and racism is a prime contributor to poverty, homelessness, crime and a world-leading high incarceration rate.

David Keranen is a retired Bakersfield College math professor. In retirement he reads extensively, writes letters and articles, and plays occasional golf.

Willow Smith details her lifestyle on ‘Red Table Talk’: What you should know about polyamory – USA TODAY

Posted: at 8:18 pm

USA TODAY TV Editor Gary Levin explains this year's Save Our Shows poll. Plus, Nicholas Pinnock explains why ABC's "For Life" should get your vote. USA TODAY

On this week's episode of "Red Table Talk," Willow Smith daughter of Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith opened up about being polyamorous.

"It's about being able to have the freedom tocreate a relationship for yourself," she said on the show, to the confusion of her grandmotherAdrienne Banfield-Norris.

"With polyamory, I think the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that's what everyone around you says is the right thing to do, " Willow Smith said. "I was like, how can I structure the way that I approach relationships with that in mind?"

With the help of a diverse group of polyamorous guests, "Red Table Talk" brokedown myths and stigma associated with non-monogamy. We talked to experts to further drill down what it's all about.

"If (people) believe it can only end in unhappiness, well, many unhappy polyamorous people end up in my office, it's true," said Sheila Addison, a family and marriage therapist,"as do many unhappy monogamous people."

Polyamory means "multiple loves" a word coined in the late 20th century, with Greek and Latin roots.

"It usually describes a particular approach to (consensual non-monogamy) that prioritizes ongoing emotional and sexual connections with multiple partners," Addison said. It's not to be confused with polygamy, aka "multiple wives" something typically associated with religious or cultural practices, she said.

In the U.S. it dates back at least to the "Free Love" and transcendentalist movements in the 19th century, though it grew popular with the counterculture and sexual liberation movements of 1960s and early 1970s, according to Adrienne Davis, vice provost offaculty affairs and diversity at Washington University in St. Louis.

"I believe one could say that it is in a third wave today, with many people practicing it, especially on the West Coast and Pacific Northwest," Davis said. According to a 2016 studythat sampled U.S. Census data from single adults, 20%ofparticipants reported engaging in consensual non-monogamy at some point in their lifetime.

There are many different terms associated with polyamory, including:

An example of kitchen-table polyamory is seen in action on "Red Table Talk."Gabrielle Smith, an ethical non-monogamy educator who practices solo polyamory, appears on the episode with her boyfriendAlex Vicenzi. He is married and also has other romantic partners; Smith is friendly with his wife, and they all spent time together during the holiday season.

And another: Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith talk 'swooning' over women in candid 'Red Table Talk' clip

The idea of life-long or serial monogamy is embedded in most cultures. Historically, "women are more stigmatized for having multiple sexual partners at the same time, or across their lifespan, than men are," said Addison.

Monogamy has also been favored for biological reasons, according toGabrielle Usatynski, a psychotherapist in Colorado.

"Manypolyamoryadvocates propagate the myth that monogamy is a 'mere blip'on the screen of human history which arose recently as a result of industrial capitalism and isolated suburban living," Usatynskisaid. "But the truth is that humans have been pair-bonding for hundreds of thousands of years in order to ensure survival."

"It still sounds to me like the major motivation is sexual,"Banfield-Norris said during the episode, still trying to learn.

Smith said that's not the case.

"Let's say you're not the kind of person who has wanted to have sex all the time, but your partner is. Are you going to be the person to say just because I don't have these needs you can't have them either?" she said. "I was introduced to it through a non-sexual lens. In my friend group, I am the only polyamorous person and I have the least sex."

Some people are in for sexbut others are for emotional intimacy or a combination of the two, Davis said.

Addison added: "Some people who are asexual and/or aromantic may identify as polyamorous as well, but their descriptions and boundaries around their relationships are going to be personal and self-defined in those cases."

"I did things that I said I would never do when I was in my fits of jealousy," Smith said of her pre-polyamorous life. "That made me realize just how much I need to step back and work on myself."

Experts agree the one thing that is needed above all else in polyamorous relationships is trust.

"Trust is paramount," Davis said. "That rests on setting the norms ...and then strong and transparent communication about needs, which may evolve. Talking through jealousy, rather than trying to suppress it, is key."

Addison said jealousy should not be viewed as an obstacle.

"Stop thinking of jealousy as something to 'combat,' she said. "It's an emotion. Thoughts may not always make sense, but emotions always do. Emotion is the smoke that says there's a fire somewhere."

Usatynski added: "Telling someone to combat jealousy is a bit like telling them to step out the window and 'combat'the force of gravity."

Effy Blue, a relationship coach, suggested ways to combat jealousy during the "Red Table Talk" episode:

Davis saidpolyamory can be sustainable and has inherit benefits for some people.

"Many people are not emotionally or physically satisfied by one person for their entire lives," she said. "I cannot think of any non-religious reason why people should be satisfied only one person."

That's OK! Just because someone else does it doesn't mean you have to.

Usatynski is a skeptic and thinks most people aren't well-suited for the practice.

"I believe that polyamorists have a lot of ideas about what they think they should be able to do in relationships and what they think of as an 'enlightened'relationships, but that these ideas fly in the face of basic evolutionary and neurobiological science," she said.

She adds that most people would feel threatened if their long-term partner wanted to be emotionally or sexually intimate with someone else, and that when push comes to shove polyamorous relationships are difficult to maintain especially when kids and the regular chaos of life are involved.

"Quite frankly, it all falls apart under the stress, demands and responsibilities of modern life," she added.

Don't scoff at the idea of it completely, though.

"Many purported monogamists would be better served by openly embracingpolyamory," Davis argued."When we look at the numbers of so-called monogamists who seek additional relationships, it may be the case that monogamy is not the majority orientation we believe it is."

Jada Pinkett Smithjust wants her daughter to love herself.

"As long as you are learning to have the greatest love affair with Willow, I'm OK with whatever you do," she said on "Red Table Talk."

Banfield-Norris echoed a similar sentiment: "As I'm sitting here I'm recognizing it's not really all that important for me to understand ... it's important that I be able to listen without judgment and let you do your thing."

Princess Sikhanyiso Dlamini of Eswatini is looking to the future while embracing her roots – ABC News

Posted: at 8:18 pm

Born into a life of service. Thats how Princess Sikhanyiso Dlamini, the firstborn of Eswatinis new generation of royals, describes her life.

The princess, the eldest of King Mswati IIIs 36 children, also serves as the countrys minister of information and communication technology.

Her father, who has been on the throne since his 18th birthday, is the last absolute monarch on the African continent. This makes him not only her father and king, but also her employer. Despite describing her relationship with her father as quite formal from a young age, Princess Sikhaniysos admiration for him is quite clear.

I would refer to him as the wisest person I know, as an inventory of information, she told ABC News. He has avid experience in leadership and exposure to different cultures and world fora where he has been representing Africa. Hes become a reference point even for world leaders.

Although she has been very vocal in her criticism of her fathers polygamy in the past, her views on the matter have mellowed with time.

My understanding of men now is different from what I thought before, she said. When you dont know that other people exist then you cant take precautions Ive learned a lot since I was younger, since Ive grown older and my opinions have been altered.

According to an aide, King Mswati III, who has been married 15 times, currently has 10 wives. He rules by decree and has faced scathing criticism from rights groups, trade unions and the media, especially for his lavish lifestyle. Theres also increasing demand for political reform. His daughter downplays the detractions.

So much has been said about the king. So much has been said about Eswatini, she noted. The propaganda out there, the narrative out there is contrary to the situation on the ground. In every home you have your children who are obedient, your children who are disobedient, you have those that are disruptive and who want to make noise and create a story that is not actually there Im not really sure what those people are referring to. But for how [the people] view the king, they view him as a father figure, as a spiritual figure. They see the king as somebody reachable, loving and caring.

Succession is not something that is openly discussed in Eswatini. According to the princess: In other monarchies, that conversation is normal and specific. In Eswatini, that conversation is sacred. The succession process in Eswatini is both hereditary and elective. The House of Dlamini dynasty goes as far back as 400 years ago and it is an undisturbed line, so it will be somebody who is born from the House of Dlamini. A male.

Her Royal Highness Princess Sikhanyiso Dlamini, the eldest daughter of the king of Eswatini, sits under a tree during an interview in Luve, Eswatini, Aug. 28, 2015.

A little known fact about the small landlocked kingdom is that King Mswati jointly rules with his mother, Queen Ntfombi. By tradition, the king reigns with his mother or a ritual substitute, the Ndlovukati (literal meaning She-Elephant). The former was viewed as the administrative head of state and the latter as a spiritual and national head of state, with real power counterbalancing that of the king. But during the long reign of Sobhuza II, the role of the Ndlovukati became more symbolic.

Educated at St Edmunds College in the U.K. and the University of Sydney, Princess Sikhanyiso puts her masters degree in digital communication to good use in her role as minister of information and communication technology. She also studied drama at Biola University in California. It is, however, her role as mother that she enjoys most at the moment. Baby Phikolwezwe Phiko Kukhanya Phasika Elihu Dlamini turned 1 on April 10. He is the kings seventh grandchild.

Sikhanyiso said motherhood is the best experience yet. I have a new earned respect for women, the sacrifices that we make for our children you have to juggle everything at the same time."

She went on, "I also appreciate the role of men in childrearing we should all play our part. I have a renewed impetus, even in the workplace, to say I want to make Eswatini a better Eswatini for my son and the generations to come -- for him to grow up in a different Eswatini that is more advanced, economically and holistically.

As if the roles of royal, minister and mother isnt enough, Princess Sikhanyiso is also an aspiring actress and rapper known as "Pashu" in Eswatini. During her brief stay in Malaysia for an internship program, she recorded a single titled "Hail Your Majesty" in honor of her father.

She said, I suppose most royals have the artistic side to them. We have those that play musical instruments, some do sport, some join the army. People would tell me I have a mellifluous voice and so I thought to branch into rapping and I thought it was a way to express myself because, you know, when you grow up in the palace it is an isolated life really .... so I needed to find an outlet somewhere and I didnt have a diary so my diary was my pen and the studio.

For now, though, she only raps in the shower.

To be honest if I wasnt so preoccupied with all the formal work, I would love to pursue a rap career," she admitted. "I actually wanted to when I was in the States but our roles and responsibilities had us confined to just simply academia. But I would love to Timberland can you hear me?
