UK to Add Atomwaffen Division to Proscribed Terrorist List | Kharon – Kharon Brief

Posted: April 21, 2021 at 9:39 am

The U.K. Home Secretary on Monday moved to proscribe the Atomwaffen Division, a neo-Nazi group predominately in the U.S., as a terrorist organization and make membership in it illegal in the U.K.

Under the proposal, membership or inviting support in the group would be a criminal offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison. A new law that will shortly receive Royal Assent would lengthen the sentence to 14 years, according to a U.K. press release. Once approved by parliament, the listing of Atomwaffen Division is expected to come into effect later this week.

Atomwaffen Division, which seeks a race war to bring about a fascist, white ethno-state, formally disbanded in March 2020, but months later, the National Socialist Order (NSO) announced itself as the groups successor, according to a post on Telegram. The U.K. named NSO as an alias; Atomwaffen Division was listed by Canada in February as a terrorist entity.

Vile and racist white supremacist groups like this exist to spread hate, sow division and advocate the use of violence to further their sick ideologies, said Home Secretary Priti Patel.

Atomwaffen Division had recruited inside the U.S. military, PBS Frontline reported in a 2018 documentary. In September 2020, the group, as NSO, resurfaced in Colorado Springs, Colorado, placing stickers containing images of Adolf Hitler, a swastika and a recruitment email on the windows of local businesses, according to a local media report.

Right-wing extremist groups such as Atomwaffen Division have adapted their use of online tools over time as they face government crackdowns, Kharon reported last year.

Atomwaffen Division has inspired other groups abroad, including the Feuerkrieg Division, which the U.K. listed in July 2020 as a terrorist organization, the U.K. government statement said. The group was aligned with the Sonnenkrieg Division, another U.K.-listed right wing extremist group, according to a U.S. congressional resolution calling to ban the group. A number of U.K. terror prosecutions cited Atomwaffen Divisions influence on teenagers, the BBC reported.

The groups relaunch announcement as NSO was carried by neo-fascist publication The American Futurist, which earlier this month also published NSOs translation of Why We Fight, a Third Reich manifesto from the Nazi era just as relevant today as it was back then.

This week, The American Futurist updated its donation page, providing language on how to obtain monero, a type of virtual currency, and donate it to the publication, according to a post on Gab, a right-wing social media network. The publication has decided to stop accepting funds in currencies other than monero due to privacy concerns, the donation page says.

Several high-level members of Atomwaffen Division have been prosecuted in the U.S. Brandon Clint Russell, a co-founder, was sentenced in January 2021 to five years in prison for possessing an unregistered destructive device and unlawful storage of explosive material. Russells writings from prison have been published by The American Futurist, where he is listed as a staffer.

Cameron Shea, a leader of Atomwaffen Division, pleaded guilty earlier this month to federal conspiracy and hate crime charges for threatening journalists and advocates who worked to expose anti-Semitism. Two co-defendants, including Johnny Ramon Garza, have pleaded guilty and been sentenced; a fourth pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial, prosecutors said.

John Cameron Denton, a former Atomwaffen leader, pleaded guilty in July 2020 to his role in a conspiracy conducting swatting events targeting journalists, a harassment tactic involving the deception of emergency dispatchers who are sent under the belief of imminent danger. His sentencing is scheduled for next month, according to the court docket; prosecutors are seeking a five-year prison sentence, court records show.

Russia Is Reportedly Abandoning the International Space Station – Futurism

Posted: at 9:39 am

The country might be launching its own space station soon.Moving On

Russia may soon be abandoning the aging International Space Station to focus on launching and populating its own space station instead, according to new reporting.

Senior Russian officials havent verified the reports, but deputy prime minister Yury Borisov did announce that Russia may soon decided if sending cosmonauts to the space outpost may no longer be worth it, The Moscow Times reports.

We need a technical inspection at the station to avoid any risks in the event of an emergency, Borisov told TASS, as translated by The Moscow Times. We will make a decision based on the results and honestly notify our partners.

The ISS has been continuously occupied for more than 20 years now and its starting to show its age, with occasional leaks requiring patching and cracked windows.

In December, the United States Congress passed a NASA authorization bill that would extend the stations life from 2024 all the way to 2030, despite its deteriorating condition.

The news comes as Russia is reportedly drafting plans to launch its own space station, as independent Russian news agency Interfax reported over the weekend but details are still sparse, except for reports that claim the station could cost as much as $6 billion.

We have a 2024 deadline agreed with our ISS partners, a press release by Russian space agency Roscosmos read, as quoted by Interfax. After this period, the decision will be made based on the technical condition of the station modules, which have basically worked out their lifespan, as well as our plans to deploy a new generation of national orbital service station.

Russia has also previously turned down offers to join NASAs plans to develop the Gateway, a small space station orbiting the Moon. Instead, Russia chose to partner with China, signing an agreement to build an International Scientific Lunar Station in lunar orbit back in March.

China’s Population Is About to Start Declining, and Its Leaders Are Worried – Futurism

Posted: at 9:39 am

"We need to pay attention to the impact of demographics on future consumption."The Decline

In just four years, the South China Morning Post reports, Chinas population is set to peak a demographic shift that could have far-reaching economic consequences.

When the total population enters negative growth [after 2025], there will be a shortage of demand, monetary policy committee of the Peoples Bank of China (PBOC) Cai Fang said last Friday, according to SCMP.

We need to pay attention to the impact of demographics on future consumption, he said.

While China eased its one-child policy in 2013, allowing parents to have two children instead of just one, the countrys birth rate has continued to stagnate. In other words, Chinas efforts to fight overpopulation appear to have worked way too well.

According to Cai, the number of people working in China had been on a steady decline for a decade now as a result.

Recently published research also showed that Chinas falling birth rate could have immediate consequences, including increased financial stress of the healthy looking after an increasingly elderly percentage of the population.

The proportion of elderly people in China has risen to almost 12.3percent in 2019, from just seven percent in 2000.

China must recognize that the demographic situation has changed, PBOC researchers wrote in the paper. The country must realize education and technological advancement will not be able to make up for the decline in population.

The cost of childbearing, parenting and education are the biggest constraints on young couples, Cai said. For the elderly, we need to increase their labor participation and social security benefits so that they can contribute to and share in the economic growth, while also maintaining consumer demand.

As a result, officials at the PBOC are calling upon Beijing to abandon Chinas two-child policy and encourage women to have more children.

NASA Will Require SpaceX to Land Empty Starship on Moon Before Sending Astronauts – Futurism

Posted: at 9:39 am

Uncrewed first, crewed second.Contract Killer

On Friday, SpaceX signed a historic contract with NASA to develop a lunar lander variant of its Starship rocket to once again land American astronauts on the Moons surface.

The massive $2.9 billion contract, a key part of the agencys Artemis program, saw SpaceX winning out over Amazon founder Jeff Bezos space venture Blue Origin.

But when Starship goes to the Moon for the first time, it wont be carrying passengers because NASA wants SpaceX to prove the vehicle is safe first in a dry run Moon landing.

While the contract SpaceX signed with NASA does requireit to eventually deliver astronauts to the Moon, the Elon Musk-led company first has to prove that its capable of sending a Starship to the Moon at all, via an uncrewed landing.

NASA is requiring a test flight to fully check out all systems with a landing on the lunar surface prior to our formal demonstration mission, Lisa Watson-Morgan, Human Landing Systems (HLS) program manager at NASA, said during a Friday conference call.

While Starship may now be NASAs first choice, other companies that had previously been vying for the coveted spot may still be able to bid on future moon landing contracts with the agency.

Amid budget constraints, its still unclear if NASA and SpaceX will be able to deliver the first astronauts to the Moon by 2024, as originally promised.

SpaceX has made great strides in developing its Starship spacecraft platform. While all four of its full-scale prototypes ended up exploding in massive fireballs, the space company has some ambitious plans, promising to have Starship go orbital before the end of the year.

The Futuristic Way You Could Soon Get Groceries Delivered From Walmart – Mashed

Walmart's John Furner also points out that going with Cruise fit in with a vision of the direction that the retail industry, as a whole, was heading towards. "Over the years we've been doing a lot to learn more about the role autonomous vehicles can play in retail, and we've seen enough to know it's no longer a question of if they'll be scaled, but when," he says (via Walmart's corporate blog).

Walmart says it is impressed with Cruise because of the brand's business model, technology, and what it called "unmatched driverless testing." Cruise offers an all-electric fleet powered by 100 percent renewable energy, which helps Walmart reach its goal of being fully dependent on renewable energy by 2035 throughout its supply chain, and hitting zero emissions by 2040.

CNBC says Walmart's investment is part of a fresh round of funding for the self-driving vehicle division, which comes to a total of $2.75 billion. Furner also said that the investment put Walmart in the company of Cruise's other investors, like Honda and Microsoft.

NASA Says Mars Helicopter Is Now Healthier Than It Was Before Flight – Futurism

Posted: at 9:39 am

Ingenuity is in a "perfect state" to "explore aerial mobility on Mars."First Flight

Early this morning, NASAs Mars helicopter Ingenuity achieved the first-ever controlled flight on the surface of another planet, a feat met with applause and cheers at the agencys Jet Propulsion Laboratory when the data started coming in.

Ingenuity perfectly executed its planned 30 second hover at ten feet above the Martian surface, caught on camera by NASAs Perseverance rover several hundred feet away and now, officials say, its in even better shape than it was before the flight.

According to Bob Balaram, Ingenuitys chief engineer at JPL, the extremely healthy helicopter managed to shake off some dust that had accumulated on its solar panels prior to the flight. That means its now capable of producing even more solar energy than before.

Charging its batteries is crucial, because Ingenuity relies on its batteries not only to take flight but also to keep its internals from freezing during Mars frigid nights.

The helicopter is otherwise in sound mechanical shape, NASA staff said. Landing gear and all other mechanisms are also doing great, with computers and avionics behaving flawlessly, according to Balaram.

So all in all, its in a perfect state and Im just really excited to see what all she can teach us over the next few weeks as we explore aerial mobility on Mars, Balaram added.

Study: Humanity Has Ravaged All But 3 Percent of The Land on Earth – Futurism

Posted: at 9:39 am

The planet is doing way worse than we thought.Global Domination

New research shows that humanitys influence has already altered about 97 percent of the land on the planet.

Very little of the land surface on the Earth just 2.8 percent can still be considered functionally intact, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Frontiers in Forests and Global Change. Therefore, the studys authors, who hail from a long list of universities and institutes in North America and Europe, recommend that conservationists immediately focus on protecting the few remaining areas of the world that represent outstanding examples of ecological integrity before its too late.

The new research could be a rude awakening to ecologists and conservationists, Earther reports, because scientists had previously assumed that between 20 and 40 percent of the land on Earth was still ecologically intact. But prior studies relied heavily on satellite images, whereas the new one involved boots-on-the-ground field work to investigate the health of various ecosystems.

Field work by many people clearly shows there are species that have been lost from these areas of intact habitat large and medium carnivores and large and medium herbivores in particular, study coauthor and University of Cambridge zoologist Andrew Plumptre told Earther. Some have been lost or reduced in number because of hunting by people, some lost because of the introduction of invasive species, such as cats and dogs, and some due to disease.

Plumptres work, like those previous studies, measured habitat intactness as a proxy for human destruction. But the new research also measured the impact humanity has had on wildlife, such as whether native species populations were dangerously low or eradicated altogether and whether invasive species had taken hold. All of those measurements hovered at just under three percent presenting a dismal outlook for the planets future.

That means some 97% of land has been screwed up by industry, hunting, the introduction of invasive species, or other anthropogenic impacts, Plumptre told Earther.

Kyle Kuzma eclectic and futuristic style leads this week’s edition of NBA Style Power Rankings – The Athletic

Posted: at 9:39 am

It would be difficult to describe this NBA season as anything other than a slog. Between the constant COVID-19-related postponements at the very start of the season, to the constant churn of games during the condensed schedule leading to an uptick of load management for many of the best players. Its hard to not notice that NBA product has taken a hit in quality this year.

Which had to be expected as soon as the league and the players association decided on a shortened offseason to get the NBA calendar back in order starting with the season after this one. This season has always felt like a bit of a sacrificial lamb. Quality needed to be compromised in order for the books to put back in order. That being said, the long season, even during the best of NBA times, always serves as the cocktail hour to the main event of the NBA playoffs.

Donald Trump is ditching the spray tan, M&M’s, and even …

Posted: at 9:39 am

The spray tan is gone, and the suntan is on. The bleached highlights are out, and the gray is growing in.

Some of former President Donald Trump's extra weight is off, too, thanks to better eating habits and a near-religious regimen of daily golf in the Florida sunshine.

"He has lost 15 pounds since he left the White House," said one Trump advisor who spoke with the former president about his health recently.

The advisor added, "The secret to his success is a little bit of golf and a whole lot of endorsements" a reference to the stamps of political approval that the former president has recently bestowed on a string of supportive Republicans.

The weight loss is no small feat for a 74-year-old man whose June physical-exam report pegged his poundage at 244 over the clinical threshold for obesity.

Other advisors who have met recently with Trump told Insider the former president looks happier, healthier, and even svelte relatively speaking since leaving Washington in January under the cloud of a second impeachment trial.

"He was eating all those M&M's on [Air Force One] all the time," said one advisor who's watched Trump trim down since leaving Washington. "He's a big man with a big frame, and he's lost a lot of weight. I can't tell you how much, but it's a lot. You can see it in his suits."

A former advisor, who met with Trump last week during a spate of dinner meetings and fundraisers at Mar-a-Lago, said Trump looked like he had lost 20 pounds.

"When I saw him, he looked healthier and in better physical condition than I had seen him in a long time," said a third advisor who visited Trump recently.

A slimmer Trump has Republicans wondering if the former president is already plotting a serious run for the White House again in 2024 something he and his advisors continue to mull, with little impetus to make a firm decision before the 2022 elections.

"I think there's an extra 10% to 15% chance he runs if he lost 20 pounds," one veteran Republican strategist told Insider.

None of the advisors or Republican strategists who spoke with Insider for this story said that Trump had surgery or other special weight-loss procedures to lose the weight. They attributed the weight loss to golf, regular meals, and Florida sunshine. (The advisors did not say, to a pound, how much Trump now weighs.)

Trump has closely guarded details about his health for years.

He routinely projected strength and vitality as a businessman and entertainer, even grappling on the ground with Vince McMahon the husband of Linda McMahon, who went on to head Trump's Small Business Administration during a World Wrestling Entertainment show in 2007. He's also harbored unconventional views about exercise.

Even as Trump and his former physicians promised he was a paragon of health, Trump's own aides detailed a junk-food diet that would give almost anyone the dreaded COVID-15.

Throughout the 2016 campaign, his aides rushed to grocery stores to pick up Oreos, Diet Cokes, and other junk food. As he lived the campaign life, he packed on the pounds like many other veterans of presidential slogs.

Trump's semi-official McDonald's order of two Big Macs, two Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, and a chocolate milkshake rivaled the menu of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps.

But the official word from Trump's doctors was that he remained in peak physical condition.

In 2016, Trump's former physician, Harold Bornstein, drafted a doctor's note attesting to Trump's "extraordinary" physical condition. The note didn't sound as though it had been written by a physician, and two years later, Bornstein said that Trump had dictated the note to him and that he had falsely claimed it as his own.

In January 2018, the White House physician at the time, Ronny Jackson, delivered a positively glowing assessment of Trump's health. A few months later, Trump nominated Jackson to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs. And when Jackson ran for Congress last year, Trump supported his bid.

Trump has stoked fears about his health before. His halting walk down a ramp last June and his awkwardness taking drinks of water led to extensive questions about his health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It also led reporters and others to recall the many unsubstantiated attacks Trump launched against his 2016 presidential opponents, such as mocking Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida for drinking water awkwardly and insinuating that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was hiding a disease or ailment.

And after playing with fire throughout the pandemic, such as attending campaign events with few safety protocols and turning the White House itself into a coronavirus hot spot, Trump eventually caught the coronavirus himself.

Trump was hospitalized and almost placed on a ventilator, despite assurances his symptoms were mild.

Trump left Washington three months ago under a truly historic cloud of darkness.

His January 6 rally, during which he pushed the lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him, spurred many of his supporters there to attack the Capitol while members of Congress certified electoral votes that declared Democrat Joe Biden president.

A week later, the Democrat-led House impeached Trump for a second time, charging him with inciting the January 6 attack. Detractors said Trump had become hazardous to the health of democracy.

On January 20, Trump left Washington at a sparsely attended and decidedly low-energy ceremony at Joint Base Andrews.

But if there is a silver lining for Trump, it's that leaving Washington gave him some rest and something close to normalcy.

Trump has been golfing even more than when he was president, a stark tally that The Washington Post counted as 261 rounds played over his four years in office.

Trump's sense of humor, meanwhile, has emerged in a way that was rarely present in the White House, advisors told Insider.

Advisors also said Trump's forced departure from Twitter and Facebook, immediately after the January 6 attack on the Capitol, has eased his mind and curbed his middle-of-the-night tweet rages.

"The president is feeling great, Mar-a-Lago guests frequently comment about how good he's looking over these last couple of months, and he feels great as well," said the advisor who spoke with Trump recently about his health. "I think there's something to be said about no longer having the weight of the free world on your shoulders."

WASHINGTONDonald Trump continued Monday totease another presidential campaign in 2024, saying he is studying the idea but declining to make a commitment one way or another.

"I am looking at it very seriously, beyond seriously," Trump told Sean Hannity on the Fox News Channel. "From a legal standpoint, I don't want to really talk about it yet, it's a little too soon."

Trump, who plans to inject himself into Republican primaries in 2022 congressional elections, did not elaborate on what the "legal standpoint" is, nor did he indicatehow long he will take to make a decision.

At the end of the hourlong interview, Hannity told Trump: "It sounds like youre running. It sounds like you havent lost any engagement."

The former president's political futurecould be determined by legal action; he isunder investigation in New York over past financial financial dealings. Prosecutors in Georgia are also looking atTrump over his efforts to pressure state officials into overturning his 2020 election loss in that state to President Joe Biden.

Trump's plans are the subject of the biggest guessing game in the Republican Party, particularly by people whoappear to be planning their own presidential campaigns.

In the meantime, Trump plans to get involved in congressional and state elections, including Republican primaries that could split the party ahead of general election races against Democrats.

Asked what he will do for his preferred Republican candidates, Trump said: "If they need a rally, well do a rally. Well do calls. Well do all sorts of things."

Trump and his supporters are targeting Republicans who backed impeachment over the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol or otherwisecriticized his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Biden.

Fox billed the Hannity interview as "Trumps first on-camera television interview since leaving the White House." On previous occasions, Trump has spoken to media outlets by phone.

The interview was taped at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

The interview aired nine days after Trump addressed a retreat of Republican donors, pushing his agenda while condemning Republicans who disagreed with him, His hit list included Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Pence, his former vice president.

The interview with Hannity featured familiar arguments from the ex-president.

Trumpagain made false claims about election fraud in his loss to Biden. He also attacked the president and his administration on issues such as the border, vaccine distribution and Iran.

As for the 2022 congressional elections,Trump repeated his claim that Republican candidate must follow his "America First" agenda, and that his endorsement is essential to victory.

"If you want to win and win big, you have to do that," Trump said. "You have to do it.
