What Do We Mean by ‘Automation’? – Forbes

I suspect Im not alone in having less-than-satisfactory experiences with self-checkout machines at grocery stores. Many of us have dealt with the frustration of the machine blaring at us to remove a mysterious item from the bagging area, only to then wait for a human employee to assist us anyway. Im not just put off by the technology as a customer but also as a professor who specializes in the field of automation, and for one particular reason: even though self-checkouts are labeled as automation, theyre actually not.

According to Merriam-Webster, automation is the automatically controlled operation of an apparatus, process, or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human labor. Increasingly, there is a tendency to label any new technology as such, especially if it appears to do the job of a human, but perceptions can be deceiving. In the case of self-checkout machines, a robot hasnt replaced the cashiers job of scanning or bagging groceries; a human is still performing those tasks but its now the customer rather than the cashier. In other words, nothing has actually been automated. Self-checkouts have not only lowered the customer experience, making it more inconvenient and less enjoyable, but also displaced jobs, many of which are incorrectly blamed on automation.

In order to improve public understanding, as well as guide how we utilize automated technologies moving forward, engineers and other stakeholders need to consider the following. First, we must find ways to better communicate what automated technologies are and what they arent and highlight how they improve peoples lives. Secondly, it is incumbent on us to determine why we are designing these technologies. Is the goal to improve quality of life and work? Or human productivity? Both, or neither? If automation is going to continue permeating society, its crucial that we, both those creating it and those affected by it, have a fuller, more thoughtful approach to how we think and talk about automation.

So-so automation

While our lives may seem more automated, which is cause for alarm for some, the reality is that weve been living with automation for decades without fully appreciating it. For instance, an appliance many people use daily provides an understated example: your oven. You set the temperature you want to cook at, and the oven maintains that temperature on its own. Its a simple directive, with the oven performing its functionality without user involvement.

But other forms of automation arent always as helpful or productive. A recent New York Times article about changes to corporate workplaces due to COVID-19 addressed so-so automation technology that is just barely good enough to replace human workers, but not good enough to create new jobs or make companies significantly more productive, according to the article. At best, its a neutral addition and at worst, a negative one; the output is the same, and little to nothing new comes out of it. The article cites self-checkouts as an example, but also notes white-collar jobs are increasingly at risk, and at a faster pace than ever before. If automation is simply displacing humans, rather than improving what they can do, its no surprise that it will be met with hesitation, if not opposition.

In other cases, true automation is deployed without full consideration of its impact on individual human populations. The New York Police Department recently began using a dog robot called Digidog during patrols. On one hand, Digidog can help police surveil dangerous situations and cover more ground. But Jay Stanley, a senior policy analyst with the American Civil Liberties Union, raised concerns to the Times about bias, surveillance and privacy over using a robot for this type of work. Technology like Digidog can have an adverse effect on the communities it is being used in, particularly if those communities are not educated about the technology, and its capabilities and limits. This can further alienate people from automation.

The case for automation

I conduct research and teach courses in the field of control systems which are at the heart of automated technologies, and was driven to this field because of the positive impact it has had, and can continue to have on society. Nonetheless, I acknowledge why automation is resisted by those who are most negatively affected by it, whether in the workplace or in their daily lives.

The solution is to move away from so-so automation and towards innovation that actually pushes the ball forward for people, workers, business, and society more holistically. There are already plenty of examples of automated technologies that we engage with regularly, such as autofill text on your mobile devices, robot vacuums, smart thermostats, adaptive cruise control in passenger vehicles, and plenty more on the way. We intrinsically understand how all of these types of automation make our lives easier, just as we fundamentally recognize when a technology is not.

If both users of automation and its creators have a clear-eyed view of what the technology is and how they can use it, we will be able to leverage it more effectively. This may require improving how we educate students, and the general public, about technology and its impact on humanity. Automation is sure to have a significant impact on our lives, so lets make sure its a positive one.

Amsterdam-based SEGRON raises 4.5 million to expand automation services – Tech.eu

Posted: at 8:50 pm

Amsterdam-based SEGRON has raised 4.5 million, now bringing their total capital raised to 10 million.

The round was led by OTB Ventures and Credo, and is expected to fuel international expansion and the entry to new industry verticals.

SEGRON is rapidly expanding with a strategy that addresses the needs of companies at the forefront of digital transformation, accelerated by Covid-19. New industries are adopting automated testing at pace, to quickly respond to fast-evolving consumer expectations and the increased technological complexity of the digital ecosystem, says co-founder and Managing Partner at OTB Ventures Marcin Hejka. SEGRON is a great example of first-class European software, enhancing the online experience of consumers and businesses around the world.

The global pandemic has driven significant demand for automation services. According to Global Market Insights, automated testing expected to grow at 15% CAGR between 2020 and 2026, presenting an estimated global market value of $35 billion.

Telecoms operators including Telefonica, The T-Mobile Group, and Swisscom are all racing at breakneck speed to meet customer expectations and rollout next-generation 5G and IoT services, all of which require strenuous amounts of automated testing, an area which has been SEGRONs primary focus.

Delivering on their promise and establishing a successful track record, SEGRON is now looking beyond their continental borders and has already inked an agreement with a Canadian telecoms operator. Additionally, this round of funding will also see the company looking eastward to the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific region.

And while the telecom industry might be the current bread-and-butter, automated testing has a wide range of applications, particularly within the automotive industry. SEGRONs recent appointments of Jean-Philippe Leloup (formerly of Ferrari/Maserati) as Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Rita DAgostino (formerly of Fiat Chrysler, Kia, and Maserati) as Chief Marketing Officer signal a strong move intention to transfer this experience into cars. Wireless connectivity plays a key factor in the auto of tomorrow, with everything from automated robotic assembly lines to self-driving cars all requiring vast amounts of bandwidth and low latency services; All of which need continuous and fully automated testing.

This is an important milestone for SEGRON as we enable some of the worlds greatest innovators to rise to the industrial-scale challenges and opportunities emerging in the past 12 months. Our automated solutions help companies to improve their end customers experience, increase productivity and improve speed-to-market for new products and services, comments SEGRON founder and CEO Thomas Groissenberger.

NASAs small business picks take on automation in space – TechCrunch

Posted: at 8:50 pm

NASAs SBIR program regularly doles out cash to promising small businesses and research programs, and the lists of awardees is always interesting to sift through. Here are a dozen companies and proposals from this batch that are especially compelling or suggest new directions for missions and industry in space.

Sadly these brief descriptions are often all that is available. These things are often so early stage that theres nothing to show but some equations and a drawing on the back of a napkin but NASA knows promising work when it sees it. (You can learn more about how to apply for SBIR grants here.)

Autonomous deorbiting system

Martian Sky Technologies wins the backronym award with Decluttering of Earth Orbit to Repurpose for Bespoke Innovative Technologies, or DEORBIT, an effort to create an autonomous clutter-removal system for low Earth orbit. It is intended to monitor a given volume and remove any intruding items, clearing the area for construction or occupation by another craft.

Ultrasonic additive manufacturing

There are lots of proposals for various forms of 3D printing, welding and other things important to the emerging field of On-orbit servicing, assembly, and manufacturing or OSAM. One I found interesting uses ultrasonics, which is weird to me because clearly, in space, theres no atmosphere for ultrasonic to work in (Im going to guess they thought of that). But this kind of counterintuitive approach could lead to a truly new approach.

Robots watch each others backs

Doing OSAM work will likely involve coordinating multiple robotic platforms, something thats hard enough on Earth. TRAClabs is looking into a way to enhance perceptual feedback and decrease the cognitive load on operators by autonomously moving robots not in use to positions where they can provide useful viewpoints of the others. Its a simple idea and fits with the way humans tend to work if youre not the person doing the actual task, you automatically move out of the way and to a good position to see whats happening.

3D printed Hall effect thrusters

Hall effect thrusters are a highly efficient form of electric propulsion that could be very useful in certain types of in-space maneuvering. But theyre not particularly powerful, and it seems that to build larger ones existing manufacturing techniques will not suffice. Elementum 3D aims to accomplish it by developing a new additive manufacturing technique and cobalt-iron feedstock that should let them make these things as big as they want.

Venusian batteries

Venus is a fascinating place, but its surface is extremely hostile to machines the way theyre built here on Earth. Even hardened Mars rovers like Perseverance would succumb in minutes, seconds even in the 800 F heat. Among the many ways they would fail is that the batteries they use would overheat and possibly explode. TalosTech and the University of Delaware are looking into an unusual type of battery that would operate at high temperatures by using atmospheric CO2 as a reactant.

Neuromorphic low-SWaP radio

When youre going to space, every gram and cubic centimeter counts, and once youre out there, every milliwatt does as well. Thats why theres always a push to switch legacy systems to low size, weight and power (low-SWaP) alternatives. Intellisense is taking on part of the radio stack, using neuromorphic (i.e., brainlike but not in a sci-fi way) computing to simplify and shrink the part that sorts and directs incoming signals. Every gram saved is one more spacecraft designers can put to work elsewhere, and they may get some performance gains as well.

Making space safer with lidar

Astrobotic is becoming a common name to see in NASAs next few years of interplanetary missions, and its research division is looking at ways to make both spacecraft and surface vehicles like rovers smarter and safer using lidar. One proposal is a lidar system narrowly focused on imaging single small objects in a sparse scene (e.g., scanning one satellite from another against the vastness of space) for the purposes of assessment and repair. The second involves a deep learning technique applied to both lidar and traditional imagery to identify obstacles on a planets surface. The team for that one is currently also working on the VIPER water-hunting rover aiming for a 2023 lunar landing.

Monitoring space farms

Bloomfield does automated monitoring of agriculture, but growing plants in orbit or on the surface or Mars is a little different than here on Earth. But its hoping to expand to Controlled Environment Agriculture, which is to say the little experimental farms weve used to see how plants grow under weird conditions like microgravity. They plan to use multispectral imaging and deep learning analysis thereof to monitor the state of plants constantly so astronauts dont have to write leaf 25 got bigger every day in a notebook.

Regolith bricks

The Artemis program is all about going to the moon to stay, but we havent quite figured out that last part. Researchers are looking into how to refuel and launch rockets from the lunar surface without bringing everything involved with them, and Exploration Architecture aims to take on a small piece of that, building a lunar launchpad literally brick by brick. It proposes an integrated system that takes lunar dust or regolith, melts it down, then bakes it into bricks to be placed wherever needed. Its either that or bring Earth bricks, and I can tell you thats not a good option.

Several other companies and research agencies proposed regolith-related construction and handling as well. It was one of a handful of themes, some of which are a little too in the weeds to go into.

Another theme was technologies for exploring ice worlds like Europa. Sort of like the opposite of Venus, an ice planet will be lethal to ordinary rovers in many ways and the conditions necessitate different approaches for power, sensing and traversal.

NASA isnt immune to the new trend of swarms, be they satellite or aircraft. Managing these swarms takes a lot of doing, and if theyre to act as a single distributed machine (which is the general idea) they need a robust computing architecture behind them. Numerous companies are looking into ways to accomplish this.

You can see the rest of NASAs latest SBIR grants, and the technology transfer program selections too, at the dedicated site here. And if youre curious how to get some of that federal cash yourself, read on below.

TMS Treatment for Autism: What is it and Does it Work? – Autism Parenting Magazine

Posted: at 8:49 pm

Talk about transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS therapy, is raising hopes of parents who wonder if the treatment could work for their child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Parents with children on the spectrum are wary of the term cure. For some, its because theyve been disappointed by snakeoil and false hope more than they care to remember; for others, the term cure seems more fitting to a disease. When you talk with parents of kids on the spectrum, most are willing to do anything to help their children thrive while firmly embracing who he/she is.

And yet, even autistic adults who celebrate the beautiful difference of their minds, admit that certain symptoms associated with autism create difficulties in everyday life. For example, those on the spectrum often have trouble with social situations and communication. Addressing these challenges in a way that embraces who the child is, but modifies behavior to make life easier, seems like a worthy (and lofty!) goal.

Some see transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as a treatment worthy of optimism. While researchers urge caution, studies suggest promise and both diagnostic and therapeutic potential (Oberman et al., 2016).

TMS or transcranial magnetic stimulation, is a treatment that directs recurring magnetic energy pulses at specific regions of the brain involved in mood control. The definition sounds a little frighteningenergy or magnetic pulses entering the brain brings up images of inhumane psych wards in horror movies. But actually the treatment is noninvasive, with relevantly little discomfort, and its helped many patients with debilitating depression.

TMS therapy (or treatment) uses short pulses of magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in specific areas of the brain, like the prefrontal cortex which is involved with mood regulation.

When mentioning TMS, people are most familiar with its potential as a treatment for major depressive disorder, but its therapeutic benefits are being investigated for other conditions too. In this regard, researchers believe TMS may possibly alleviate symptoms associated with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

When someone undergoes TMS, the person administering (usually a psychiatrist, physician, or sometimes a clinical psychologist) presses a device to the left side of the patients head, and starts the process of moving magnetic fields into the brain with the flip of a switch.

These magnetic fields produce tiny magnetic currents as they move into the brain. The currents activate cells to release neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. The release of these feel-good chemical messengers may restore balance in the brain which may bring relief for those suffering from depression.

As individuals with autism may have low brain serotonin concentrations (Ademsen et al., 2014), its no wonder researchers see promise in the treatment for those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Most doctors state sessions lasting between 30-40 minutes are best, with a recommended 30 sessions over the course of six weeks. Patients usually experience relief (like an elevation in mood) within two to four weeks of the treatment commencing.

Although TMS is FDA approved, this authorization applies to administration in adults (between the ages of 18-70) and only for severe depression that doesnt respond to other medicationsFDA authorisation now applies to other conditions like OCD too. Should a child therefore undergo the treatment for autism, it would be considered off-label.

While TMS may sound good in theory, parents are obviously concerned about any type of therapy administered to their childs brain. However, a study (Yang et al., 2019) reported significant reduction in social and language related symptoms after children with ASD underwent TMS treatment courses. The study also reported possible improvements in cognition and imitation as reported by caregivers. The study saw promise in TMS to improve core deficits in low-functioning children with ASD.

Even though suggestions of success are encouraging, parents also want reassurance that the treatment does not have serious side effects. In addition, parents may wonder about the level of discomfort and the sensory implications of the therapy.

As mentioned, much research is still needed in terms of the application and side effects of TMS, especially when administered to children on the spectrum. In the meantime, studies pertaining to the effects of TMS on neurotypical children may be an appropriate source.

In a study by Krishnan et al. (2014) noninvasive brain stimulation techniques such as TMS were examined to assess the treatments safety when administered to children and adolescents.

The study found repetitive TMS to be safe in children and adolescents when safety guidelines were followed. When side effects were present, it seemed similar to side effects experienced by adults. Out of 513 of the children (or adolescents) involved in the study, 11.5% experienced headaches, 2.5% experienced scalp discomfort, 1.2% experienced twitching, and a very small percentage experienced mood changes, fatigue and tinnitus (Krishnan et al., 2014).

When looking at anecdotal evidence of pain and discomfort experienced, when undergoing TMS treatment, the verdict seems positive. The treatment is generally well tolerated and some feel the lack of serious side effects make it a great alternative for those sensitive to medication.

Parents should, however, be aware of reports of patients experiencing pain, especially at the site of stimulation. Croarkin et al. (2011) detailed the pain experienced (during TMS administration) by two children aged 10, and an adolescent aged 17. The 17-year-old mentioned the pain felt like a headache, sort of like a migraine behind my eyes.

This high level of pain experienced may be rare, but parents of children with ASD should be aware of the worst case scenarioespecially when children with sensory difficulties like tactile defensiveness are involved.

An aspect of TMS that probably needs more investigation, especially for children with autism, is the risk of seizures. As children with autism have a higher chance of being diagnosed with epilepsy too, this concern should be addressed with a qualified professional before deciding on the appropriateness of TMS.

Stultz et al. (2020) produced a literature review of the safety of TMS with respect to seizures and mentions that TMS has been successfully used in patients with epilepsy and traumatic brain injuries. It is further mentioned in the review that seizures are a rare but serious side effect of TMS, but the risk may be low at less than one percent.

There may be further good news, as a new treatment combines TMS with Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG) and Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) to deliver a tailored treatment to the patients unique brain pattern.

The fact that this personalized protocol, known as Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT), ascertains the individuals brain patterns, means greater success may be achieved in restoring chemical imbalances.

For parents who would like to find out more about MeRT, specifically for a child with ASD, the following story of Frankie (who stopped toe-walking and learned to talk after his family discovered MeRT) will be an inspiring read.

Experts agree that, although TMS and specifically MeRT appear promising, research is urgently needed to establish efficiency and the long term effects of the treatment. Researchers are hopeful that future studies will find proof that TMS and MeRT are effective in treating certain ASD symptoms like social and language deficiencies.

The TMS journey of Kim Hollingsworth Taylor (founder of the Clearly Present Foundation) became an internet cautionary tale for the extreme highs and lows she experienced when her son underwent TMS. The treatment relieved some of her sons autistic symptomsbut only temporarily. This only highlights the fact that more research is needed, especially concerning long-term outcomes of TMS.

When a study (Sokhadze et al. 2018) lists significant improvements in measures of executive functions and behavior in kids with autism, parents may rightfully experience a surge of hope. Researchers do urge caution, however, as the one thing they seem to agree on is that many more clinical trials and studies are needed to establish the effectiveness of TMS for core symptoms of ASD.

If youve read the research and you believe your child may benefit from TMS or MeRT, the best course of action would be to see your physician or a psychiatrist. These medical professionals will take your childs medical history (and conditions like epilepsy) into consideration before helping you decide if it is the right course of action for your child.

Jennifer Barredo

The use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has a modest yet promising history in suicide reduction, according to the authors of a study published in Neuromodulation.

In this seedbased functional connectivity analysis, Jennifer Barredo et al evaluated whether changes in frontostriatal functional connectivity would accompany suicidality reductions following TMS, with the aim of optimising future treatment. This study was a secondary analysis of an open-label trial of 5Hz TMS of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD).

A total of 25 participants were included in this secondary study. For inclusion in the parent study, participants were required to meet criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-V) for both PTSD and MDD. Patients overall illness severity rating were at least moderately ill on the clinical global impressions-severity scale for each diagnosis. However, actively suicidal intent and suicidal planning were exclusionary.

Patients received eight weeks of 5Hz TMS on the left DLPFC. Clinical symptoms were measured on the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self Report (IDS-SR) and the PTSD checklist from the DSM-V (PCL-5). Investigators derived their definition of suicidality from IDSSR item 18, which is a thoughts-of-suicide item. Possible responses to item 18 include: (0) no thoughts of death or suicide, (1) feeling that life is empty or wondering if it is worth living, (2) thinking of suicide or death several times a week for several minutes, or (3) thinking of suicide or death in detail multiple times each day, having a specific suicide plan, or having made an attempt.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was collected before TMS, and at the treatment endpoint. Researchers entered these data into analyses of covariance, evaluating the effect of suicidality change across treatment on striatal and thalamic functional connectivity. Changes in other PTSD and depression symptoms were included as covariates, and results were corrected for multiple comparisons.

Suicidal ideation of any severity was reported by 68% of participants at study baseline, with 10 participants reporting a score of one, five participants reporting a score of two, and two participants reporting a score of three. Researchers found that after TMS, suicidality decreased by a minimum of one point in 65% of participants. However, they did also see an increase of suicidality in 12% of patients, including on one participant who did not endorse suicidality at baseline. Across participants, the mean change in overall PCL-5 and IDSSR scores was 41.8% and 42.6%, respectively, in this subset of the original study cohort. In the parent sample, the average decrease in PCL5 was 35.5% and IDSSR was 37.6%.

In their conclusion, the studys authors commented: Collectively, findings argue that the precise targeting of frontopolar circuits via diffusionguided individualised targeting may enhance neuromodulation delivery precision to our highestrisk patients. Combing these methodologies with innovations in 5Hz TMS delivery, such as pulse energy optimisation, may further improve its efficacy as an antisuicidal treatment.
