The golden days of Ayurveda are here – The Financial Express
Posted: at 2:15 pm
The Charak Samhita is Ayurvedas conclusive treatise and the most referred text by students, scholars, teachers, physicians and researchers.
By Vidya Hattangadi
Globally, Ayurveda-based products saw a surge in demand in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, even as scientists the world over are sprinting against time to bring out the standard treatment modality. In terms of time, almost a year passed to find the vaccine to curb the increase curve of the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic. The situation has been acclaimed globally that strengthening the immune system will work wonders in combating the coronavirus. Allopathic companies are trying to find out an all-time well-tested mantra to stay safe and healthy. Having recognised the significance of the holistic approach of Ayurveda, the Union health minister Harsh Vardhan has supported the role of Ayurvedic remedies in the prevention and treatment of the coronavirus disease, especially for its immunity-boosting properties.
Indian Ayurveda industry has become one of the fastest-growing industries with a huge range of products. Despite being the modern medical system, Allopathy has been incapable to find an enduring solution for certain diseases such as jaundice, piles and biliousness, etc. These ailments can be effectively managed by Ayurveda. Though Ayurveda acts slowly but works effectively and cures the disease at its root.
Ashwagandha, brahmi, cumin, turmeric, licorice root, gotu kola, bitter melon, pepper, giloy, etc, are making entry into households like never before. Indians are continuing to put a united front against the battle with the novel coronavirus; people are going back the herbal way to boost their immune systems. Giloy is winning hearts of millions in the struggle against the virus. Giloy has been hailed for its medicinal properties and a host of health benefits. The scientific name of this age-old miraculous herb is tinospora cordifolia and it is also known as amrita in Sanskrit, which literally translates to the root of immortality.
Previously, Ayurveda-based products in the Indian market were restricted to hair oils, the local dietary supplement called the chyawanprash, and over-the-counter palliatives. Now, natural Ayurvedic ingredients are increasingly being integrated into a growing number of products, ranging from shampoos, skincare creams, oils, powders, toothpaste gels and soaps to cough syrups, teas, packaged juices and nutritional supplements, among other fast-moving consumer goods.
The Charak Samhita is Ayurvedas conclusive treatise and the most referred text by students, scholars, teachers, physicians and researchers. It has the unique distinction of being the only text available worldwide on the most restorative science. It emphasises on the promotion of health and prevention of diseases as the actual solution for controlling diseases, which is especially relevant in modern times. Further, it also seriously dwells upon the concept of healthy ageing and longevity, as described in the Swastha Chatushka and the Rasayana chapters.
A survey by market research firm Nielsen found that the natural segment accounts for 41% of the total of Rs 44,790 crore personal care market share. Many MNCs, which were the leaders in the toothpaste category, lost their shine when home-grown Ayurveda companies found flavour with consumers, forcing some companies to come out with herbal variants. Herbal brands and variants from Dabur, Colgate and Patanjali gained nearly 350 basis points in market share in a year in the Rs 7,000 crore Indian oral care segment, according to a leading daily. Among the natural segment category, toothpaste is growing at 20.1%, followed by hand and body at 17.5% and shampoo with 13.2%; sanitiser sales have shot up beyond our imagination. Top FMCG company Emami acquired Kesh King, a top selling brand of Ayurvedic hair oil in North India. On the other hand, HUL acquired Kerala-based Indulekha hair oil for Rs 330 crore. Marico acquired Nihar Shanti Amla hair oil. It had acquired private equity-controlled Paras Pharmaceuticals for Rs 3,260 crore in 2016.
Is Ayurveda safe? To cite an instance, the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) pulled up a number of brands for making misleading or false claims in their ads or not adequately substantiating these claims which were found to be in violation of its code. Among these were new-age alternative medicine companies which made false claims. The $53-billion FMCG sector in India is moving towards the wider adopting Ayurvedic products. HULs Ayush is the only brand which is spread across categories, from toothpaste, soaps, face wash and face cream, shampoo and hand wash. Dabur is the worlds largest Ayurvedic and natural healthcare company with a portfolio of over 250 herbal and Ayurvedic products. Dabur also recommends various Ayurvedic home remedies. Besides Vicco Vajradanti toothpaste, Colgate has entered with their Ayurvedic toothpaste, and it is piggybacking on Ayurveda in other segment of products, too.
The endorsement of several high-profile spiritual leaders (gurus) has also contributed to this resurgent interest in Ayurveda-based products, catapulting newer brands like the Baba Ramdev-promoted Patanjali to the top. Here we discuss how top FMCG firms in India have had to respond to the new-age marketing by spiritual figureheads and their promotion of Ayurveda. Patanjali products are advertised as natural and organic; these products are also branded as swadeshi or national, owing to these being made in India. The company has leveraged the mass popularity of its founder, Baba Ramdev, as a yoga teacher and spiritual god man, to effectively be its brand ambassador.
The global Ayurveda market is predicted to grow at a healthy CAGR over the forecast period (2018-2023), states the new Market Research Future (MRFR) report. Ayurveda medicine is one of the oldest holistic healing systems. The goal of Ayurveda is promoting good health and not fighting diseases.
Ayurveda is here to stay and has golden days ahead.

Trump ally claims UFO sightings are kept secret – The Week UK
Posted: at 2:14 pm
Military pilots and satellites in the US have recorded a lot more sightings of UFOs than have been publicly declared, Donald Trumps former intelligence director has claimed. John Ratcliffe said: Frankly, there are a lot more sightings than have been made public. He continued that in some of the cases we dont have good explanations about what the UFO might have been, adding: I actually wanted to get this information out and declassify it before I left office.
A Russian academic has said that humans will one day be able to live forever and bring the dead back to life. Death seems to be a permanent event, but there is no actual proof of its irreversibility, said transhumanist Alexey Turchin. He added that there are four different paths to indefinite life so that we can choose our own adventure. One such path is to replace you organs with bioengineered ones, he claimed.
A man with a lottery ticket worth $1m (723,395) nearly missed out on his prize after losing the ticket in a car park. Nick Slatten from Tennesseewas delighted when he discovered his jackpot win, but later realised that he could notfind the proof. He luckily returned to the car park and found the lucrative ticket. Its a million-dollar ticket, and someone stepped right over it, he said.

Scientists Succeed in Creating Mouse Artificial Wombs – Discovery Institute
Posted: at 2:14 pm

Scientists in Israel have gestated mouse embryos about halfway to term outside a uterus. From theNew York Timesstory:
The mouse embryos looked perfectly normal. All their organs were developing as expected, along with their limbs and circulatory and nervous systems. Their tiny hearts were beating at a normal 170 beats per minute.
But these embryos were not growing in a mother mouse. They were developed inside an artificial uterus, the first time such a feat has been accomplished, scientists reported on Wednesday.
The experiments, at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, were meant to help scientists understand how mammals develop and how gene mutations, nutrients and environmental conditions may affect the fetus.
This technology is still a long time from the potential for human application, but it presents issues we need to addressnow rather than wait until it is too late to keep within proper ethical parameters.
Among the issues society needs to ponder:
In any event, this is important and portentous research that, like most biotechnologies, can lead to the best and worst of worlds simultaneously. The time to create internationally binding regulations on human research in this and other biotechnologies such as CRISPR genetic engineering, three-parent embryos, human cloning, etc. cannot be put off any longer. These are the most powerful technologies in human history, even more potentially life-altering than atomic energy.
But unlike what we did and do with atomic energy, we just let things float along on the wind. Our political leadership has utterly failed in its obligations by refusing to mention, much less tackle, these difficult issues. I dont see immediate prospects for doing better, but worse, with regard to the anything goes mentality so prevalent in Big Biotech.
How does the dystopia ofBrave New Worldcome into being? This is how!

Humans to be immortal by 2600 and time travel to raise the dead ‘inevitable’ say experts – Daily Star
Posted: at 2:14 pm
Humans may one day be able to live forever and even bring the dead back to life, a "transhumanist" believes.
Alexey Turchin is a Russian academic who has dedicated his work to the pursuit of immortality inspired by the death of a childhood friend when he was only 11.
He has published several books on the subject, and recently released a paper titled the Classification of Approaches to Technological Resurrection for the Foundation Science for Life Extension in Moscow.
Written with fellow scholar Maxim Chernyakov, it contains something called an "Immortality Roadmap" which details four different paths to indefinite life so that readers can "choose their own adventure". If one plan for life extension should fail, there are three others as back up.
"Death seems to be a permanent event, but there is no actual proof of its irreversibility," the authors write.
"Here we list all known ways to resurrect the dead that do not contradict our current scientific understanding of the world. While no method is currently possible, many of those listed here may become feasible with future technological development, and it may even be possible to act now to increase their probability."
Plan A is simply surviving until technology becomes advanced enough to artificially prolong life. In the meantime humans who want to live forever must simply stave off death by replacing their organs with bioengineered ones or simply staying alive in a "nanotech body".
As these methods are mostly unavailable or unsuccessful, Turchin recommends Plan B - cryonics, or freezing the body until a solution is developed, a service already offered by several companies.
Plan C is "digital immortality", which involves preserving data about a specific person so that they can be reconstructed in the future by AI beyond current capabilities. It's also known as "indirect mind uploading".
The tech dystopian series Black Mirror portrayed the downsides of this kind of technology in the episode Be Right Back, in which a woman recreates her dead husband in a cyborg based on his social media history.
Turchin is already committed to ensuring his preservation in internet history - he's been recording every minute detail of his life as it happens
He hopes that one day, a superintelligent AI will be able to take all this information and create a digital version of himself. This digitised person could even be downloaded into a host body cloned from Turchin's own body while he was alive, Israel 365 News reports.
Plan D is simple: have faith in the possibility of immortality, either on the quantum level or through AI.
Turchin recommends applying all four of the approaches to have the best chance of living forever, but it could be a long wait.
"The development of AI is going rather fast, but we are still far away from being able to 'download' a human into a computer," he told Russia Beyond.
"If we want to do it with a good probability of success, then count on [the year] 2600, to be sure."

And there's another technology-in-waiting that could help his vision of eternal life be realised: time travel that brings the dead back to life.
"More speculative ways to immortality include combinations of future superintelligence on a galactic scale, which could use simulation to resurrect all possible people, and new physical laws, which may include time-travel or obtaining information from the past," the paper reads.
A powerful time travel machine would require an immense amount of energy, which the researchers theorise could be provided by a "Dyson Sphere".
This hypothetical megastructure would completely encompass a star to capture a large percentage of its power output.
A Dyson Sphere around our sun would produce roughly 400 septillion watts per second, they said, concluding that some kind of immortality or death reversal is not only possible but certain.
"There many possible approaches to technological resurrection and thus if large-scale future technological development occurs, some form of resurrection is inevitable," they wrote.

Michigan reports about 4,800 coronavirus cases over the weekend – WOODTV.com
Posted: at 2:12 pm
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) Michigan has reported 4,801 more confirmed cases of coronavirus and six more related deaths.
The Monday update, which includes two days worth of data, brings the total number of cases in the state to 629,612 and the total number of associated deaths to 15,903.
On Saturday, labs tested 28,843 samples for the virus and 2,332, 8.09%, were positive. On Sunday, 26,394 samples were tested and 2,538, or 9.62%, were positive.
The number of positive tests is not the same as the number of new cases because people may be tested more than once. Additionally, testing numbers are from a single calendar date, while the number of new cases lists the increase since the last time the state compiled the data; these two time frames do not match up precisely.
The state has started tracking 65 more coronavirus outbreaks at K-12 schools, colleges and universities, bringing the total number of such outbreaks to 231. Portage Central High School and Portage Central Elementary are tracking outbreaks of 20 or more people, NorthPointe Christian School has at least 30 cases and Forest Hills Central 34 cases, while East Grand Rapids High School has an outbreak of more than 40.
The number of outbreaks in schools is rising as the state also sees a sharp uptick in the number of confirmed cases among people age 10 to 19. For the first time last week, the number of new outbreaks in schools was larger than the number of outbreaks in long-term care facilities. Public health officials attribute this, in part, to more kids participating in sports and other extracurricular activities.
Two West Michigan counties reported one additional death each over the weekend: Barry and Oceana counties have now had 48 and 49 deaths, respectively. Barry County has had 3,219 total cases and Oceana County 1,846.
The death toll in Ottawa County was revised down by one to 323. This has not been uncommon as cases are double-checked and sometimes moved between jurisdictions. It has had 22,093 total cases.
Kent County confirmed 246 more cases of the virus for a total of 50,999. The number of deaths remained unchanged at 668.
Wayne County, where Detroit is, reported 998 more confirmed cases, bringing its total to 101,951. Its number of deaths remained unchanged from Saturday at 3,988. Oakland County has had 69,632 cases (740 more than were reported Saturday) and 1,935 deaths (no change). Macomb County has had 60,184 cases (655 more) and 1,900 deaths (no change).
Key virus metrics are showing concerning increases in Michigan: The case rate has been on the rise for a month and the average positive testing rate is nearing 7%, more than twice the 3% that public health officials look for to show community spread is controlled.
Hospitalization rates are also on the uptick. More than 1,400 adults were hospitalized Monday, confirmed to have the virus. Thats about twice as many as a month ago and an increase of more than 460 in the past week. The peak during the fall surge, which happened Dec. 1, was 3,884 patients.
As of Monday, Michigan had received more than 4.3 million doses of the vaccine and nearly 3.6 million doses had been administered statewide, reaching about 28.5% of the population over the age of 16. Last week, the state averaged about 67,500 shots given each day; that rate has been increasing fairly steadily week over week.
Several counties have vaccinated a higher percentage of their population than the state average. Those above that 28.5% mark are Kalamazoo, Muskegon, Kent, Ottawa, Berrien and Van Buren counties.
As of Monday afternoon, Cass County is making the slowest progress statewide at 16% of residents vaccinated. The county is grouped with Van Buren for its district health department, which has vaccinated 29% of residents.
Those falling below the statewide progress arent far off. Much of the difference can be attributed to local health departments handling distribution as the sole provider in the area before more pharmacies receiving shipments.
The health department is really the only provider in the jurisdiction that is able to provide vaccine to the community members, Allegan County Health Department Public Information Officer Lindsay Maunz told News 8. So knowing that, weve really leveraged partnerships across the sectors and learned throughout this response that those community partnerships are key.
She noted ACHD previously gave some doses to Meijer to help with a clinic prior to the company receiving federal allocation.
Were working to identify those solutions and those barriers, Maunz said.
Effective Monday, everyone age 50 and up and everyone 16 and up with a preexisting health condition is eligible to get vaccinated in Michigan. The state will open up access to everyone, regardless of health status, April 5. However, be aware that it could still take a while to get an appointment because supply is still limited.
Later this week, the federal government will open a mass vaccination site at Ford Field in Detroit. Meijer, which is helping run the site, said Monday it had already registered 110,000 people to get their shots there and set appointments for 14,000. To register, go to Meijers website or call the state COVID-19 hotline at 888.535.6136.

Tens of millions in coronavirus relief aid expected for Jackson County communities – MLive.com
Posted: at 2:12 pm
JACKSON COUNTY, MI -- Hundreds of millions of dollars will soon be sent to Jackson County communities as part of the newest federal government stimulus package, but they have yet to determine how or when theyll be able to spend that money.
Congress American Rescue Plan, the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package, includes $350 billion for state and local governments. More than $10 billion of that could be coming to Michigan, according to preliminary estimates shared by officials.
But just how that aid can be spent still is a mystery, officials said. City and county officials say they have not received federal guidance on the exact value of the aid, how it can be used and if theyll get it in installments or all at once.

That makes it difficult for municipalities to plan, Jackson County Board of Commissioners Chairman Steve Shotwell said. The county appreciates the revenue -- preliminary estimates say it will receive $30.7 million -- but Shotwell said hes staying reserved until federal guidance is shared.
You dont want to get caught in a situation where you spend money on a project and have to pay it back, Shotwell said. Then you short-change other revenue down the line.
County department leaders will prepare by recommending projects that could be funded, then recommend them to the board once the federal parameters are set, Shotwell said.
The preliminary estimate of $32 million for the city of Jackson from this coronavirus aid came as a surprise to the administration. By comparison, the citys general fund revenue for this fiscal year is about $26 million.
In April 2020, the city received $756,020 from the CARES Act for coronavirus relief, but this stimulus is bigger in part because population, poverty rates and housing instability for a city were included in determining the aid.

No plans have been set for the money because of the lack of spending requirements. In city hall, the conversations are stabilizing the operating budget to address the expected losses of city income tax. More information will be shared with residents, possibly through public input sessions, in the future, City Spokesman Aaron Dimick said.
Its a really big amount of money, but when you look at the overall impacts that were going to see over the next 10 years, we may need that much money to overcome these obstacles at the city level, and also help our community overcome obstacles, Dimick said.
