Ford and the University of Michigan (U-M) announced the official grand opening of the Ford Robotics Building at the University of Michigan's north campus. The four-story, $75 million, 134,000 square-foot complex will "help accelerate the future of advanced, more equitable mobility," Ford said in a press release. The two organizations said they hope the facility will be used to develop robots and roboticists that help make lives better, keep people safe and build a more equitable society.

It will be the new hub of the U-M Robotics Institute on the first three floors, which feature U-M research labs "for robots that walk, roll and augment the human body." Also in this location: classrooms, offices and makerspaces.

U-M Robotics Institutes aim to advance human-centered robots (machines and systems that interact with people), extending the human body and process of human cognition.

Ford roboticists, as well as autonomous vehicle researchers, will be located on the fourth floor, and will benefit from exposure to a wider range of work in the field. There will be 100 Ford engineers and researchers. The location anchors Michigan mobility corridor's west end. Ford's reborn Michigan Central Station will be built by 2022 and a transformed Dearborn development campus by 2023.

Ford's portion of the facility, for research and development, will offer space to roboticists whose goals are "aimed at disrupting the transportation landscape." The focus of researchers will be on moving goods efficiently, experimenting with a four-legged robot called Spot, laser-scanning plants and self-driving vehicles and the role they will play in the future.

Designed by HED, the building's architecture, said Ford, "Echoes the U-M Robotics Institute's boundary-breaking and inclusive spirit. Ford and the University of Michigan said they want to emphasize that robotics can create a more equitable society by collaborating on a more inclusive curriculum. It will, they hope, open more opportunities for underserved students and bring together a broad range of educational disciplines to drive the field toward a future that puts people, rather than technology, first." Designed for outreach, passersby can watch research happening, because the lobby is an open atrium.

"To me, this new building brings to life a collaborative, interdisciplinary community that I'm proud to host at Michigan Engineering, said Alec D. Gallimore, Robert J. Vlasic dean of engineering, Richard F. and Eleanor A. Towner professor of engineering, and Arthur F. Thurnau professor of aerospace engineering, also in the same press release. "Our Robotics Institute upholds an explicitly inclusive climate and a culture that believes in the field's potential to serve as an enabler for all, especially those who have previously been underserved. In this way, we aim to push the robotics field, and engineering more broadly, to become equity-centered--intentionally closing, rather than unintentionally expanding, societal gaps."

The new facility will bring together U-M researchers from 23 buildings and 10 top 10 programs. With the new infrastructure, researchers working on two-legged disaster response robots can test them on a 30-mph treadmill studded with obstacles, or on a stair-stepped "robot playground" designed with the help of artificial intelligence, for example.

Biomedical engineers will have access to "earthquake platforms" with force-feedback plates to guide their development of lighter-weight, more efficient prosthetic legs. And Ford engineers will explore how their upright digit robots can work in human spaces while taking AVs from robotic computer simulations to on-road testing at U-M's proving ground located "just down the road."

Classrooms will be designed for hybrid instruction and U-M and Ford are collaborating with historically Black institutions in Atlanta for a more inclusive curriculum--students in those schools can enroll remotely in the U-M pilot course Robotics 101, which doesn't require calculus and "levels the playing field for students from lower-resource high schools that don't offer advanced courses."

Ford partners with University of Michigan in $75M robotics facility – MLive.com

Posted: at 12:18 am

ANN ARBOR, MI A new $75-million, 134,000-square-foot robotics facility at the University of Michigan is now open.

The Ford Robotics Building on the north campus will serve as a world-class, advanced robotics facility and the new hub of the UM Robotics Institute, according to a university news release. The four-story building will include research labs for all types of robotics, as well as classrooms, offices and makerspaces.

The fourth floor will also house Fords first robotics and mobility research lab on a university campus and 100 Ford researchers and engineers, according to the release. UM and Ford will collaborate to show how robotics can create a more equitable society, including creating a more inclusive curriculum to open up more opportunities for underserved students, the release states.

To me, this new building brings to life a collaborative, interdisciplinary community that Im proud to host at Michigan Engineering, Alec D. Gallimore, UM dean of engineering, said in a statement. Our Robotics Institute upholds an explicitly inclusive climate and a culture that believes in the fields potential to serve as an enabler for all, especially those who have previously been underserved. In this way, we aim to push the robotics field, and engineering more broadly, to become equity-centered -- intentionally closing, rather than unintentionally expanding, societal gaps.

Ground broke at the facility in April 2018 and it was scheduled to open in early 2020, but work was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ford Robotics Building anchors the west end of the Michigan Avenue mobility corridor that begins in Detroit and runs through Dearborn to Ann Arbor, according to the release.

With Fords development of the former Michigan Central Station and plans to overhaul its Research and Engineering Center in Dearborn, the partnership with UM will allow the two institutions to experiment with potential mobility solutions for the future, according to the release.

How Ford plans to transform iconic Detroit train station into innovative 30-acre campus

To close gaps in public transit access across southeast Michigan, Ford and UM are working to develop a first-of-its-kind corridor for connected and autonomous vehicles, according to the release.

Autonomous vehicles have the opportunity to change the future of transportation and the way we move, said Tony Lockwood, technical manager of autonomous vehicle research at Ford. As this new technology rolls out, having our Ford team working on campus collaborating with the academic world will help us shorten the time it takes to move research projects to automotive engineering, unlocking the potential of autonomous vehicles.

The future of robotics in healthcare – Health Europa

Posted: at 12:18 am

The data which shows that robot-assisted procedures accounted for 15.1% of all general surgeries in 2018, up from 1.8% in 2012,1 is an indication of two things:

1) Humanity is slowly beginning to trust robotics systems more; and

2) Robot-assisted procedures are becoming more accessible.

In the long term, integrating robotics into surgical procedures will result in a more enhanced healthcare system: we would be able to perform more complex surgical procedures, and as a result, save more lives. But this change would also require a pivot in the educational system. In order to sustain a high standard of performance using the existing solutions on the market, doctors would need to understand the basics of robotics; otherwise a more intuitive navigation system will be required.

In addition to the rise in surgical robots, there has a rapid increase in the overall implementation of robotics applications in healthcare. The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the way robots are perceived now they can be involved in patient screening, surface disinfection, positioning of medical devices and distribution of medicines, while keeping nurses and doctors safe from infection.

Taking all the above into consideration, the robotic assistant MAiRA from German company NEURA Robotics would be a perfect fit for the healthcare industry, thanks to a completely safe human-robot interaction system, intuitive navigation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and flexible system architecture.

NEURA Robotics is a high-tech robotics company which is poised to usher the way into the cognitive era by building intelligent robotic assistants which provide needed support to humans and focus on solving societys most pressing issues, such as the ageing society. The companys leader and CEO, David Reger, is one of the pioneers in the collaborative robotics field. Reger has amassed over nine years of experience in developing and introducing one of the most intelligent, sensitive and precise collaborative robot (cobot) series on the market.

Reger firmly believes that global problems, like the ageing population and many others, can be solved by new types of robots. NEURA Robotics products are able to interact with humans in much the same way that people are used to interacting with each other. No complex programming or convoluted learning is required. As a robotics advocate and visionary, Reger aims to integrate robotics into day-to-day chores, not only covering industrial needs, but also transforming spheres like social care, medicine and one day in the future in everybodys home.

At NEURA Robotics, the main belief is that humans should be able to do what is at the core of human nature. NEURA Robotics enables people to express their creativity and focus more on social interactions again instead of doing unhealthy and monotonous jobs, which is still very common throughout general society. Everything the company does is based on the slogan: We serve humanity.

This ambitious vision led the team of about 50 talented engineers to create the innovative robotic assistant MAiRA. With fully integrated novel sensors and an unprecedented integration of Artificial Intelligence in control systems and applications, MAiRA is leading a new era of robots. The robust and rigid design combines the performance of a high-end machine with easy programming and infinite possibilities for interaction both for beginners and experts. MAiRA tears down boundaries between humans and machines and brings them closer together for good.

MAiRAs unique set of characteristics can be easily applied in many new spheres, such as the medical field. She is able to feel, hear and see her surroundings, meaning that her capacity to fully perceive the environment enables her to rapidly adapt to a dynamic environment while staying completely safe. This makes MAiRA a truly collaborative robotic assistant which can be easily integrated into the doctor-patient relationship.

MAiRA is capable of conducting and assisting with various complex medical procedures, either with professionals by her side or wholly autonomously. Thanks to the intuitive user interface, voice and gesture control systems, a doctor or a nurse will not need to spend days or weeks learning how to operate the robot; they can instead focus on the most important part: treating their patients and making sure that they get the required help and care.

5 Robotics Stocks on the Cutting Edge – Investorplace.com

Posted: at 12:18 am

Robotics stocks seem like a slam-dunk. The trend toward automation has been going on for decades now. Backed by improved artificial intelligence and exponentially greater computing power, it should continue for decades going forward as well.

The one catch with the bullish thesis for the group is that the opportunity isnt exactly hidden. Valuations generally reflect the bullish thesis; investors have to pay up for exposure to the robotics trend.

So far, however, doing so has been wise. Robotics stocks have done well both in recent years and in the 12 months since markets bottomed last March. With the pandemic potentially accelerating adoption, and the markets focus on growth over valuation largely intact, theres no reason the rallies have to end just yet.

For investors who believe the strength in the group will continue, here are five robotics stocks worth at least a long look:

Source: Daniel J. Macy / Shutterstock.com

While investors have been focused on fallen American titan General Electric (NYSE:GE), one of Europes great companies too has struggled. Like GE, ABB has embarked on a multi-year turnaround strategy. And, like GE, there are early signs of success.

Indeed, after a decade of rangebound trading, ABB stock has broken out. It trades just shy of an all-time peak reached back in 2007. And while the conglomerate isnt a robotics pure play, optimism toward ABBs robotics business has driven part of the optimism toward ABB stock.

Thats despite an admittedly soft 2020, during which in ABBs Robotics & Discrete Automation segment declined 13% year-over-year. But, obviously, the novel coronavirus pandemic was a key factor.

Despite the pandemic, the segment still generated $2.9 billion in revenue. ABB said in its annual report that it expects 10% annualized market growth over the next three years, with the pandemic itself a catalyst.

A business that size with that kind of growth potential can move the needle for ABB stock, even with a market capitalization now above $67 billion. If robotics indeed bounce back in 2021, all-time highs seem in the cards for the stock.

Its been quite the roller-coaster ride for IRBT stock. Shares first cleared $100 back in 2017 on optimism toward the companys growth potential. During 2019, it dropped two-thirds from peak to trough as competition intensified and that growth slowed.

Since the pandemic, results have picked up. iRobot seems back on track. The question here is valuation.

IRBT has gained 59% already in 2021. Strong fourth-quarter results last month are playing a role, but the stock also appears to have been part of the Reddit rally in late January. While the stock is down from a brief peak, its still kept a good chunk of those gains.

That said, at 25x forward earnings valuation isnt necessarily prohibitive. Valuation remains a concern, but a patent infringement suit against rival SharkNinja could provide an edge on that front. And in the near term, given a still-heavy short interest, Redditors could take another run.

Surprisingly, there arent a lot of young robotics stocks trading yet, but the SPAC (special purpose acquisition company) trend is bringing one to the public market. SPAC Revolution Acceleration Acquisition is merging with Berkshire Grey, a developer of artificial intelligence and robotics primarily for e-commerce providers.

Its an intriguing deal. Berkshire Grey was founded by a former iRobot executive. It estimates a total addressable market of some $280 billion. Broader e-commerce growth should drive demand, as should the need to keep pace with the likes of Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and manage what are becoming common labor shortages.

There are risks. Ive talked elsewhere about the hidden dilution of SPAC mergers. Figures from Berkshire Grey and RAAC suggest that 2020 revenue was about $35 million, meaning the current RAAC stock price values the robotics firm at well over 70x revenue. The company is projecting exponential growth, but company projections arent always right and are rarely conservative.

In other words, this is an early-stage growth stock: high reward and high risk. But, particularly with a pullback in RAAC after initial optimism toward the merger, its an early-stage growth stock worth considering.

The bad news for Stereotaxis is that it hasnt really delivered on its promise as a provider of robotic systems for cardiovascular applications. But thats also good news, too, as it leaves more room for improvement ahead.

Similarly, the fact that STXS stock has more than doubled since early November is good news and bad news. Its bad news because the stock is more expensive. Its good news because a good portion of the gains came after fourth quarter earnings last month. Guidance for double-digit growth in 2021 and $10 million to $20 million in robotic system revenues sparked optimism and sent STXS to a seven-month high.

If that guidance is a sign that Stereotaxis is starting to deliver on its potential, then theres plenty of upside ahead. If not, its another false start for a company that has disappointed in the past. Its somewhat strange to see a turnaround story amid robotics stocks, but Stereotaxis certainly qualifies. And if that story plays out, STXS has solid upside even after the gains of the last few months.

Investors looking for robotics stocks can look to smaller plays in the space. They can consider exchange-traded funds like the Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF (NASDAQ:BOTZ).

Or they can just buy ISRG stock. Intuitive Surgical is far and away the most valuable of the robotics stocks, for good reason. The company has revolutionized surgical procedures worldwide.

Admittedly, ISRG stock does look expensive at almost 50x next years consensus earnings estimate. Last years results were soft, owing largely to a pandemic-driven decline in elective procedures.

Neither factor seems to quite offset the bull case, however. Normalcy will return, allowing Intuitive to return to growth. The earnings multiple is high, but in many ways Intuitive has only scratched the surface of its potential. ISRG doesnt have to be the only robotics stock an investor owns, but any investor bullish on the space probably should have the stock in her portfolio.

On the date of publication, Vince Martin did not have (either directly or indirectly) any positions in the securities mentioned in this article.

Cedar Falls High School robotics coach wins the region’s STEM Teacher Award – kwwl.com

Posted: at 12:18 am

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KWWL) - The Cedar Falls High School robotics team has created and competed their robots for more than two decades.

Although the 'Swartdogs' have gained success throughout the years, it's not the students who were recently recognized. It was their teacher, Kenton Swartley.

"For me, it's kind of a recognition of the many years I've been involved in different aspects of STEM," Swartley said.

Starting the high school's first robotics team in 1999 and now leading the district's engineering and robotics strand, Swartley has received Iowa's STEM Teacher Award for this region!

"It's a wonderful honor to be recognized by the governor STEM advisory board," Swartley said.

Always being drawn to science, Swartley teaches his robotics team how to code, model, and program each robot's function.

Mainly teaching high school aged students, Swartley said he loves being able to equip kids for the future.

"In my mind, it's the direction our world is going with technology, these are skills they're going to need to have," Swartley said.

Swartley's award also includes a $3,000 cash prize that can be used for classroom and personal use.

Typically preparing for big competitions this time of year. The pandemic has forced them to be virtual.

Now, the Swartdogs have been submitting videos of their robots performing challenges, and will know the results in early May.

Some of the challenges the robots perform are ball shooting and barrel racing.

How to get the First Law of Robotics achievement/trophy in Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse – Gamepur

Posted: at 12:17 am

Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse is a game centered all around the undead. The focus is entirely on taking over Punchbowl City and eating as many brains as possible. That being said, there are multiple achievements/trophies attached to the re-release of the game that are rewarded by you dying (again). The achievement titled The First Law of Robotics has a description that reads, Get killed by a robot. Here is how to send yourself to the grave via a robots intervention.

While you will come across many robots as you play through Stubbs the Zombies story, they can be a little underpowered if you are playing on Normal or Easy difficulty. For that reason, we recommend waiting to go for this achievement until you reach the level The Doctor Will See You Now.

Fight your way up the multiple floors of the laboratory until you reach a room with two scientists and two robots. In this room, the robots will attack you until you press a red button on the other side of the room. If you are playing on higher difficulties, you can easily get killed by the robots here, but for an even easier way to get killed, keep moving upwards.

Eventually, you will come to a room with six robots lined around the walls.
