Pandemic And Rites Of Death – Letter | Falmouth Opinion – CapeNews.net
Posted: at 1:28 pm
After reading a recent newspaper article on todays virtual presentations of wakes, memorial services and funerals, I began thinking how the customs of death and dying have dramatically changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
My parents came to America from Portugal in the late 1890s. We lived in a neighborhood where many immigrants from Portugal, the Azores and Cape Verde settled. In my early teens, my grandfather was the first family member to die, and the first dead person I had seen.
His wake was held in the front parlor of his home. Following Portuguese custom, a 24-hour vigil was observed. A symbol made from black crepe paper was placed on the front door of the home indicating that a wake was being held. This practice was known as Hanging the Crepe. Around the clock, family members and friends brought food and paid their respects.
A Roman Catholic Mass and interment were celebrated on the third day. As a youth, I remember watching the casket placed at the gravesite and lowered by a hand crank to the grave while mourners wept. This practice resulted in loud cries of sorrow and occasional fainting. Guests were also invited to a function hall or restaurant where they could express their love and memories of the deceased.
Floral arrangements adorning the home or church were a big ceremonial part of the mourning period. Please Omit Flowers was not in vogue at that time. Although most of the families were not prosperous, no expenses were spared. Large floral arrangements were common.
The pandemic has changed our normal activities after the passing of a loved one. It is no longer possible to have a normal celebration of life. Today there are no longer large gatherings of people at churches, funeral homes, private homes or burial ceremonies at cemeteries. The numbers of COVID-19-related deaths affecting the elderly are staggering, and this surge has forced obituaries in our newspapers to read: A private service will be held at a future date. Or, In lieu of a gathering, we ask that you remember the deceased when they come into your mind, smile, and say to someone have a nice day. In addition, funeral homes have adapted to provide video and a virtual presentation of the wake or memorial service. The uploading of funeral videos to social media outlets is now common practice. Today however, the celebration of life has been put on hold for a future date.
There remains a need for family to accept the passing of a loved one. There is comfort in the process of a wake and funeral, although being in a long receiving line can be exhausting, especially for the elderly. Never forget the importance of family and friends grieving together and consoling one another over the loss of their loved one. Hopefully, one day soon our social distancing will be replaced with more hugs.
Many elderly victims in nursing homes and aftercare were forced to die alone or with only their courageous nursing, hospice or medical staff in attendance. I share my condolences to all of the families affected by COVID-19 in Barnstable County and Massachusetts. I look forward to the day when this disease has been defeated and we can celebrate life and death in a more normal state of being.

One Viral Moment: 9 Drama Commentary YouTubers on Their Breakout Videos – Vulture

YouTube fame often doesnt occur until, very suddenly, it does. A creator can spend years drifting around the abyssal undercurrent of the platform, raking in 50 views at a time, until suddenly the fickle algorithm grabs hold of their channel and decides its time for a video to go viral. Commentary YouTubers both respected and feared across the platform, depending on whom you ask put the genre on the map with college-essay-style monologues offering opinions on the controversies of their peers. Their videos would delineate distinct before-and-after moments, gather evidence of bad behavior, and make judgment calls, with the creators often serving as the closest thing to that worlds moral compass. One week they were totally anonymous and broke, the next they were ranting about Logan Paul to a few million people.
We spoke to nine YouTubers about the breakout moments that put them on the drama economy map the videos that got them on the Trending page, and when they realized there was no going back.

My first viral video was actually back in 2007, when I did a dance from High School Musical, but I started YouTube in earnest in 2017. In the quest for clout, I had a lot of things to say about the tech industry. I went to school for computer science, and I worked in Silicon Valley, so I could share those experiences while making jokes. But that felt restrictive and like I couldnt branch out of that audience. But I had a eureka moment when I watched Drew Goodens videos. I was like, Oh, this is just stand-up. I can do this. I started packaging my tech videos as commentary videos, with the goal of eventually swapping out the tech for whatever I wanted to talk about.
At the time, I was making like 20,000 to 30,000 views. The way I blew up is kind of funny. Theres a YouTube channel called 5-Minute Crafts, which had 15 million subscribers and is full of these weird life hacks. I made a video about it called The Worst Life Hacks Ive Ever Seen, and it completely bombed. I only had like 9,000 views on it three weeks after uploading it. I was like, Okay, Im never making a commentary video again. But then, six months later, Cody Ko put up a video about 5-Minute Crafts. That was cool; it was nice to be validated like that. But how could I communicate to people that Ive also made a video on that topic? I changed the title of my old video to 5-Minute Crafts Is the Worst Channel on YouTube. All of a sudden, I started to see the views pick up and then it just kept going. The spikes in my analytics were a vertical line upward. I went from 40,000 subscribers to 200,000 subscribers.
I talk to creators about this: If a video underperforms, you might think that you did something wrong. That can be true in a sense, but the whole time I was down on myself after the 5-Minute Crafts video initially bombed, I had already made the content that was going to go super-viral. If you build it, they will come.

I knew I wasnt going to be a professional Viner, so I always wanted to transition into more longform content on YouTube. So when Vine shut down, it was probably a good thing for me. Everything I worked for was now gone, and I had to start again. It forced me to get out of my complacency. My first idea after jumping onto YouTube was to make longer sketches where I play all the characters basically just an extended Vine. But then I found myself thinking, What do I like watching? And I liked watching people doing commentary videos and reacting to all the strange stuff on YouTube. So I started doing that, and after a while, I got better at it.
Without a doubt, the video that blew up my channel was when I went to a Jake Paul concert. My other videos were doing like 100,000 views, and that one did 4 million in a month. Jake Paul is a fixture on commentary channels, but I think I was one of the only people to go see him live rather than just complain about him online. It was like walking into a different world. Someone like Jake Paul has all these young fans around the world, obviously. But seeing them all in the same place, where theyre all screaming their heads off, was so bizarre. The show was at the House of Blues, where Ive been at to see actual bands play. And now this dork from YouTube is rapping onstage.
What I liked most about the show was that it wasnt only Jake Paul. He had his whole posse there performing songs or doing these weird sketches. One of them, Sunny Malouf, has a dad whos this famous dentist. And halfway through the video, I did a deep dive into their $40 million house. Like what kind of teeth is he fixing? Thats my favorite part of any of my videos: doing the research and finding these weird details to throw in.
Jake Paul has now become the literal embodiment of someone who wants to entertain at all costs, even if it means getting your ass beat by a professional boxer. Id rather him do that than him making a name for himself by harassing his neighbors. As long as hes on the receiving end of punishment, go for it.
Its funny when you start out on YouTube, its easy to make fun of anyone. But Ive become more cognizant as Ive grown. With a big platform, I cant go after some small YouTuber; itll just look like Im bullying them. But as long as Im confident in the criticism that I have, I dont really care if I make someone mad.

I started out making videos on Vine, and when that platform died out, I went through a phase of wondering what I should do with my life. I went to college for my degree in computational media, and there was part of me that thought I should just try to find some job in that field. But I started experimenting on YouTube, working with a number of different genres to see what stuck. And eventually I settled on commentary. I was sort of nave about it. I was like, Yeah, I can probably record 15-minute videos after only being successful making six-second videos. But when I look back on my early YouTube career now, Im like, Oh my God, I hate how I talk in these. Im always looking at the monitor, not the camera. There were so many things wrong with what I was doing.
I had a number of decently successful commentary videos, but it wasnt until 2018, when I put up one called Trying Troom Trooms Awful Pranks. Troom Troom is basically a life-hacking crafting channel. They would post these step-by-step tutorials on how to pull these ridiculous pranks on your friends, and each of them get millions of views. I decided I was actually going to try them on my family and my wife.
The funny thing about those pranks is that they seem to intentionally want to get the people around you to question your sanity. One of the pranks was to grind up graham crackers in order to make fake sand and then you just start eating sand in front of someone so that they think youre crazy. Another one was making a fake phone case out of hard sugar and then eating it in front of someone. Like, the person youre pranking doesnt end up getting embarrassed by these.
That video didnt even take off for a few weeks after I uploaded it. But then the algorithm got a hold of it. All of a sudden, I was getting like 17,000 new subs a day. By the end, I had 1.2 million subscribers. I had just doubled my metrics over the course of a month.
Now that Ive got a lot more subscribers, I know its more likely that whoever Im making a video about might see it. But also I think I empathize more with larger creators now. When I was smaller, Id look at them like they were untouchable. But now Im like, Ive grown a lot in subscribers, but Im still a person with feelings. I think my older videos had a little less of a playful tone. When I make a video now, I hope that the person Im talking about can laugh at them too.

I started on YouTube because I was interested in makeup. So I started watching a bunch of makeup tutorials, and that led me to finding some drama channels that talk about problematic beauty gurus. As I got deeper into it, I found that I also had opinions about those things. Why not turn on the camera and make some friends?
One of the videos that blew up my channel was about a guy named John Kuckian. He had a drama channel with 350,000 subscribers, and he tried to launch a cosmetics line. It was a joke. He was trying to promote these lipsticks that he said were sourced in Italy, when they were really from China. I was a fan of him, and I watched him change into this liar. But none of my friends care about YouTube drama, and my fianc doesnt care about YouTube drama, so why not talk to the internet about it?
The first day, the video got 100 views. I was at my friends house and was like, This is crazy! Because 100 views was a lot for me. It kept growing and growing from there. I went from 12 subscribers to 50,000 subscribers overnight.
I never started YouTube to be a YouTuber. I never thought that this would be my job or that Id be famous. All of a sudden, I was getting followed by other, bigger drama channels, and I heard from people who wanted to hear more from me on certain topics. Nobody cared about my opinion before, and now 50,000 people wanted to hear more from me. It was exciting but also very surreal.

I started on YouTube when I was 11, making LEGO stop-motion animation. I did that through high school and middle school, and once I got to college, I knew I probably wasnt going to have time to animate. But I still wanted to make videos, and I looked at content I liked at the time, which was a lot of commentary channels. I decided to start doing that.
In November 2018, I made a video about this guy called TheBudday on TikTok who was under a lot of scrutiny for suspicious, pedophiliac behavior. I went through all the allegations. There were screenshots of what he apparently sent these underage girls, videos on his TikTok where he was duetting with people who were clearly underage. It was pretty questionable. I DMd some of his alleged victims for more evidence. There was no hard proof, but I wanted to let people know to be wary of this guy.
That video took off overnight. It racked up 4 million views in the span of three weeks. Its a balance when you talk about more serious topics like this. You dont want to be flippant or callous, but you also want to make sure the video is entertaining for the viewer. When you move into allegations like that that involve real victims and when there are reputations on the line I try to just present everything as it currently stands, and to not mess around with jokes.

Ive been watching YouTube for so long. I felt like I was always going to try and make videos at some point. Not many of my friends follow YouTube, so I would always just see things on the site and be like, Oh my gosh, thats so crazy, and I have no one to talk about it with. When you turn on any TV entertainment news, theyre not going to be talking about YouTube personalities; most of them dont even know who they are. So when I discovered commentary channels, it seemed like an opportunity to discuss whatever was on my mind. Thats why I started my own.
At first, I got around 1,000 views a video, which made me think I could potentially do this as a job. But I think when I really started to see the subscribers roll in was when I was talking about Olivia Jade, Lori Loughlins daughter, and the college-admissions scandal. I loved Olivia Jades content, and I really wanted to go to USC, so I was completely shocked that she cheated her way in. I made a compilation video, after the fact, of all the times where Jade was acting superrich. And, of course, that became my most-liked video of all time. That whole situation really blew up my channel.
I think everyone was just frustrated by her. It wouldve been my dream to go to that school. I didnt get in, and to see her say things like shes only on campus for the parties was just a slap in the face for a lot of people. I felt really passionate about it which, again, is a bummer, because I thought her content was really great.
Personally, though, that video was really exciting. All of a sudden, I had this audience, and I started making videos constantly. Before, I wasnt on a strict schedule, but afterward I was like, I need to have a new video out every week.
Current View Count: 446,956
I didnt have a lot of friends growing up. Even now, I dont hang out with a lot of people, so, for me, making a YouTube channel was about connecting outside of my small group. I started in 2016, mostly talking about fashion and beauty. But in 2017, I switched over to doing more commentary stuff, which tended to get more views than the other things I was uploading. I make music as well, so building an audience helps me with that career, too. Ive always had high hopes for myself.
The video that blew up my channel came out in 2019. It was called Where Is the DIVERSITY on YouTube? I was really hesitant to put it up. I had spoken about race before but wasnt super-vocal. I was asking my brother, Should I put this up? Should I not? Of course, when it went up, it got more views than anything I had done within the first hour. I focused on this company that had set up a trip with 30 teenage YouTubers and only one or two Black girls. Those girls were talking about how they felt uncomfortable on those trips and how they didnt have decent enough sleeping arrangements compared to the other people on the trip. As a Black viewer, that made me uncomfortable. Thats why I wanted to speak on it.
It was interesting. When I first recorded the video, I was so confident with everything I was saying. I was like, I cant wait to edit this. But when I started editing it, I got nervous. I thought that people didnt know me for talking about racial injustice. It was just tea videos and Shane DawsonJeffree Star commentary. I didnt know who my audience was at the time. After the video blew up, it felt weird to go back to my usual content. But also I know Im not the most educated on every topic. My audience didnt pester me too much, though. They wanted me to make whatever was going to make me happy. Thats what I like about my audience: They seem to be mature.

Ive been making YouTube videos since I was 11 years old. Back then, I was making vlogs, sketches, and personal videos. When I entered college, in a media-studies program, I was having a bit of a YouTube identity crisis. By 2017, I hadnt even hit 100,000 subscribers yet, and I had a lot of friends who hit a million in a year. I didnt know what direction I wanted my channel to go in, and I didnt want to talk about myself anymore. Thats when I discovered that my audience liked my commentary, and I learned I could make videos where I just talk about YouTube and social media and whatever other topics I was interested in.
My top-viewed video is called Youre Not Relatable Anymore. I was basically saying that as YouTubers become rich and famous, they become increasingly disconnected from the audience. I compared YouTubers that try to stay more down-to-earth in terms of their image with the ones that do a complete one-eighty and start buying cars and a big mansion. How does Jenna Marbles still seem so relatable when others are so different after they hit it big?
Obviously, I always wished that my channel would blow up, but even on a small scale, when a video gets more views than usual, it can be scary. You dont know what the response is going to be or how long it will last. I try to not make my videos drama-focused, but I use internet drama as a way to talk about a larger topic. There was a transition for me being seen as a small YouTuber and then, within a month or two, I hit 500,000 subscribers. Im the same person, but I know people would suddenly see me as a big YouTuber. I started to realize that the people I talk about, or the people I put in my thumbnails, might see what Im saying about them. And that makes you second-guess yourself. Its a fine line to walk.
Ive been thinking about my own relatability lately. Im hoping my channel hits a million subscribers. That milestone is a symbol. Psychologically, the pressure grows so much when you get there. A lot of popular YouTubers stop posting once they hit that threshold, and I have my theories about that. I just want my content to be good. I think Im still a pretty normal person. Im not about to go join the Hype House.
Current View Count: 63,172
I was a gymnast growing up, so my channel was initially focused on cheerleading. But then I found YouTube drama, and I got interested in that. I ended up starting my own channel dedicated to commentary, and I got really sucked into that world.
One of the videos that put me on the map was when I talked about Angelika Oles and Smokey Glow. Smokey Glow did a collaboration with Angelika, who has said some racist things in the past. When Smokey did the collab with Angelika, a lot of people were confused, because Smokey is very big about social justice and being an ally. She ended up deleting the video. I felt like both of them were wrong, and I talked about each of them equally. For some reason, people really liked what I had to say, and I gained 5,000 subscribers within a month, which was really weird for me.
I think I gave the conversation a little more nuance. A lot of people were praising Smokey, and I know she does a lot for marginalized groups, but she rarely collabs with people from those groups. I critiqued her on that. The problem with commentary channels is they go off of their first gut reaction. I used to be that person. I would get outraged before seeing all sides of the story. Some people are easier to talk about than others. And commentary channels go after whats easy: Someone said something racist. Lets talk about that.

Trust Dental Care: How a Hardworking Dad From Montana Changed His Life With a Smile Makeover Contest in Tijuana – PRUnderground
Posted: at 1:28 pm
They launched a Smile Contest Makeover. They would give a complete dental reconstruction entirely free for one lucky winner. In the meantime, at Sidney, Montana, Korey had no idea his life was about to change.
Korey is a hardworking dad that lives with Brook (his wife) and his two children. Many years ago, Korey had decided always to put his family first. Something admirable but quite detrimental to his health.
Overtime, Korey developed numerous oral health issues that he kept putting aside. Dental care in the United States is expensive, and the cost of all the work his teeth needed could be more than $50,000 dollars.
Luck or Destiny?
As a result of not attending to his oral health, his dental conditions changed his life for the worse. He started having pain when eating, his self-confidence was affected, he wouldnt smile anymore, and his entire family could notice it.
Brook decided she had to do something about it, and when she discovered Trust Dental Cares Smile Makeover contest, she knew this was Koreys chance. And it was. Out of thousands of contestants, he was the one who ended up being the luckiest.
It was almost unbelievable, but when they less expected it, Korey and Brook were already in our Luxury VIP Limousine on their way to Trust Dental Care in Tijuana, Mexico. Ready to claim Koreys very deserved prize.
I had never been out of the country, Korey said, It took a lot of encouragement to bring myself to do it.
To his and his wifes surprise, they encountered a flavorful and kind city when they arrived. Korey and Brook loved the food and the people. A fully bilingual Tijuana dentists team was waiting for them at the dental office, and Koreys concerns started to melt away.
The Smile Makeover
Trust Dental Cares team got to work and determined that Korey would need Porcelain Crowns.
They performed all the extractions and root canals necessary before beginning with the crowns. Koreys mouth was significantly damaged with tooth decay and gum disease. They had to make sure they took care of that and every other issue.
In the meantime, Brook still couldnt believe that her husband was getting a Smile Makeover. It was something she knew would improve his life tremendously,
The time came, and Korey finally received his PorcelainCrowns. Trust Dental Care had perfectly customized and created them thanks to their German state-of-the-art CEREC machine.
This technology allows them to create Porcelain Crowns right next to your dental chair, saving you time and money.
The doctors finished placing the new, strong, and beautiful Porcelain Crowns and handed Korey a mirror to see.
When Korey held up the mirror to finally see his new bright smile, he did something he used to avoid at all costs: he smiled.
Its more than I expected, shared Brook. Its a complete difference!
Koreys life was about to get so much better. His kids would finally see him smile and laugh like never before. They would be able to treasure that image of his dad in their memories.
He could say goodbye to pain when eating things he enjoyed, and he would finally stop letting fantastic opportunities pass by because of low self-confidence.
When he arrived home, the first significant and brave change he made was uploading a picture of himself on social media. He naturally received tons of comments complimenting his new charming smile.
He re-introduced himself to society. He was making it clear for everyone that he had become a better version of himself. Korey had upgraded and would never be the same.
Trust Dental Care has performed multiple Smile Makeovers and dental restorations to thousands of patients from all over the world but recognizes this was a special one.
Their team of Tijuana dentists wants Koreys story to become a reality for as many people as possible.
Thats why they strive to give high-quality dental care at fair prices. Everyone deserves to change their story, and Trust Dental Care is there to make it happen.
If youd like to have your own dental transformation, you might want to take advantage of their new special Porcelain Veneers promo. You can get 6 Porcelain Veneers at only $2499!

The former Niue Islands Soccer Association has been inactive for the past 10 years, putting it in breach of the OFC Statutes.
Every OFC member association must ensure their elected President serves no more than three full terms of office for four years, manage a register of members that is regularly updated, implement a club licensing system and communicate any amendment of its statutes, rules and regulations to Oceania Football.
Members must also inform OFC of any authorised signatories who are able to enter into legally binding agreements with the confederation and third parties.
OFC said it is aware a new organisation representing Niue is being established and welcomes its application for associate membership.
The OFC Executive Committee has also confirmed more schedule changes as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The qualifying process for the 2022 FIFA Men's World Cup has been delayed until at least 2022 while the OFC Women's Nations Cup will now start in June next year instead of January.
The OFC Champions League, Beach Soccer Nations Cup, Under 16 and Under 19 Women's Championships and Futsal Invitational have all been postponed, while the Under 17 and Under 20 Men's Championships have been cancelled, after FIFA pulled the plug on the proposed World Cup events in Peru and Indonesia.

Niue’s OFC membership revoked – Football in Oceania

The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) has revoked the Associate Membership of Niue.
The Associate Member status of the former Niue Islands Soccer Association has been revoked, following a decision taken by the OFC Executive Committee during its March 3 meeting, an OFC statement read.
The former Niue Islands Soccer Association has been inoperative for the past 10 years, putting it in breach of Article 10 of the OFC Statutes
Article 10 states that:
Every Member Association has the following obligations:
It has previously been stated by Sascha Derkop that the Niue Soccer Association has had no contact with OFC since the early 1990s.
The OFC writes that the Executive Committee had no other alternative but to revoke their Associate Member status.
But there is light at the end of the tunnel, according to the OFC press release.
OFC is aware that a new entity representing Niue is in the process of establishment and welcomes its application for Associate Membership in the future.

What Im Hearing: The latest on what to expect from the 2021 Olympics USA TODAY

With less than 150 days to go, the Oceania National Olympic Committees President Robin Mitchell highlighted support being deployed toward Oceania inpreparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games, slated to start in July.
ONOC is working around key areas of support for its Olympic committees to ensure the safe participation of its member countries at the Games in Japan.
Some COVID-19 free islands are still vulnerable because the vaccination programs vary.
The need is to emphasize the importance of compliance and shared risks of non-compliance and to demonstrate that the planning thus far is robust and rooted in science and stakeholder listening. he said.
Mitchell said 35% of athletespots are still up for grabs. Australia, the largest Oceania member, will arrive in Tokyo with about 420 athletes while New Zealand, ONOC's second-largest member, will have about 200. The rest of Oceania will have about 150 athletes total, including universality slots, and every nation is being represented.
At the moment, all the focus ...is on Tokyo before looking at the pre-Games training, so until the borders open up between the islands and Japan, most of our island NOCs are training in their countries, Mitchell said.
Mitchell said while the Tokyo 2020 Games organizing committee hasn't made vaccinations a requirement for athletes and officials, being vaccinated would be ideal and the onus falls on the NOCs to work with their respective governments.
Guam National Olympic Committee president Ricardo Blas, secretary general of ONOC, said it has been a long journey of resilience.
Noting that many athletes are still training in their own home countries with the challenge of facilities and resources such as focused individualized sports-science-specific needs per athlete, we are working digitally to inspire and keep athletes focused," Blas said.

Return of live weightlifting raises hope that the sport can return to normal – Insidethegames.biz
Posted: at 1:25 pm
More than 400 weightlifters have returned to the platform to compete live in Spain and the United States this weekend, raising hopes of a return to some sort of normality after a year lost to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Among them was Lidia Valentin, one of the worlds most popular weightlifters, who topped the standings in the Absolute Spanish Cup in Leon today, where the mens winner was David Sanchez.
That event was restricted to the top 30 lifters in Spain, 15 men and 15 women, across all weight categories and was televised live on the La Liga channel.
In Salt Lake City, Utah, nearly 400 athletes opted to lift "in person" and another 600 chose to compete virtually at what is believed to be the first hybrid international competition in any sport.
The four-day North American Open Series 1, now featuring Canadian as well as United States lifters, got the show back on the road after a run of cancellations and postponements.
Neither the Spanish nor the North American event is an Olympic qualifier or an official International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) competition, but they are a sign that the sport is opening up again in the build-up to four continental Championships which will take place in a 23-day period next month.
The fifth continental Championship, in Oceania, has been postponed until late August because of COVID travel restrictions, which leaves the IWF with a problem in terms of Olympic qualifying as Oceania lifters will be denied a chance to win "gold level" points.
The qualifying period has been extended until the end of May so the IWF Junior World Championships in Saudi Arabia can be included along with two other events in May, the East Asian Championships in Korea and the South-American and Ibero-American Championships in Colombia.
In the absence of live competition in Oceania an email tournament was staged across the region throughout February, with a record 590 athletes from 20 countries taking part.
Eileen Cikamatana, formerly of Fiji and now lifting for Australia, stood out for her performance in the womens 87kg with a best total of 250kg, while the rapidly improving Samoan Don Opeloge made 387kg in the mens 96kg class.
Samoans finished top in seven of the weight categories.
"Live" events have been held in Russia and elsewhere recently, and Russia will play a lead role next month when it hosts the European Championships in Moscow.
But most athletes of all ages have been restricted to virtual competitions during lockdowns, the most high-profile of which have been in Peru and Colombia.
The last lift made in an event sanctioned by the IWF was a year ago yesterday, on March 5 2020 in the Rogue Weightlifting Challenge at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio.
In the field for todays contests at the North American Open is Kristen Erickson, a former shot-putter who competed in the super-heavyweights on that day last March before COVID-19 wiped out the rest of the 2020 programme.
That was at "the Arnolds", named for Arnold Schwarzenegger, a multi-sport event that usually draws 200,000 spectators over four days.
"It was a strange set-up," Erickson said, "because there are usually thousands of people watching and this time there were none.
"It was like a weird ghost town, and it was an introduction to the strange year that 2020 became.
"After I got home from the Arnolds I went into the office for one day and that was it, I was working from home after that."
Erickson, 26, is a data analyst for United Healthcare in Philadelphia who was swamped with work once the pandemic took hold, but never gave up on training.
"I would train every day as usual because the US Nationals were in May, but then they were cancelled," said Ericksen.
"Then Id train every day for the next meet in September and that was cancelled too.
"So I kept training for Atlanta in December - cancelled.
"You had to have faith that the next meet would happen to keep your discipline, to not give up.
"My feeling after 2020 is that Ive lost a year of learning to be a competitive lifter in the arena, of dealing with pressure, of travelling, of being in a different setting, in a different bed, eating different food.
"For some of my friends it caused a lot of damage to their motivation.
"People who are not in the sport for the long term, maybe they lost their fire.
"It could have happened to me as I was working from home - get up, walk 10 steps to work, log off at the end of the working day and the couch is right there, inviting you to sit down.
"Do I really want to go and train?
"But I would never let myself ask that question, I was always prepared, ready to go with no 15-minutes in between.
"My motivation was the thought that a meet will come some day.
"I competed online, which was nice, but it was my own bar, my own plates, at my own club - it felt like a normal training day rather than a competition.
"Im glad to be back in a safer, smarter way.
"Hybrid is the best compromise we could have had.
"This is giving us hope for the nationals in Detroit in June and July."
Phil Andrews, chief executive of USA Weightlifting, said the decision to try a hybrid format, for an event with just under 1,000 entries but no spectators, was made in December.
Athletes had been training outdoors, in basements and garages, and in rented storage boxes.
"The community showed determination to keep the sport alive," he said.
Those competing in person must undergo a test before arrival, wear masks at all times, have their temperature checked, stay socially distant and even bring their own pens for signing in.
Coaches are not allowed to gather round the scoreboard, loaders must wear goggles - the list goes on.
"Its very nice to be back in a situation here where you meet athletes and coaches and you talk to them about sport all day, not governance issues," said Andrews, referring to the political turmoil within weightlifting.
There was another bonus, said Andrews - the possibility of using the experiences from this event to shape future decisions.
Many competitors live a long way from venues, such as the day's first lifter from Hawaii, and a virtual option would cut their costs enormously.
New technology could also help in testing and recruiting referees.
One of the top performances in the first three days came from Maddison Pannell, who made a clean and jerk of 109 kilograms in the 49kg weight category.
Pannell, a former gymnast and CrossFitter who came late to weightlifting, has made very rapid progress.
In Leon the multiple Olympic medallist Valentin, now 36, weighed in at 74kg and made 103-130-233 while Sanchez, weighing 75kg, made 152-185-337.
Ilia Hernandez and Irene Martinez finished second and third in the womens event, and the same positions in the men's event went to Marcos Ruiz and Alejandro Gonzalez Baez.
Their next competition will be the European Championships in Moscow.

The cost of a comfortable retirement in Thailand and in rest of Asia and Oceania – Pattaya Mail
Posted: at 1:25 pm
The study found that a person retiring to Thailand would need $389,835 in savings in order to maintain the same standard of living they were used to in the West.
Anyone thinking about retiring to Thailand should have the equivalent of around 11 million Baht in savings (approx USD$390,000), thats according to a new study on the cost of retirement around the world.
The study, carried out by online lender NetCredit titled The Cost of a Comfortable Retirement Around the World, looked at how much someone might need to retire aboard and enjoy their same quality of life.
This was determined as going out once a week, takeout coffee once a week, no smoking, moderate drinking, and no taxis or rideshares, eating mainly Western food at home, two vacations and renting a 1 bed apartment in a city centre, among other factors.
The figures are based on someone living for around 14 years after they retire with the average age of retirement in America (64) and the average life expectancy (78.7). The same calculations were then applied to almost every country.
The study found that a person retiring to Thailand would need $389,835 in savings in order to maintain the same standard of living they were used to in the West.
The amount of savings required for Thailand were considerably lower than the amount needed to retire comfortably in both the United Kingdom ($515,742) and the United States ($601,489.63).
Regionally, Southeast Asia remained an affordable option for retirement, with Indonesia ($290,599), Malaysia ($321,614), Vietnam ($353,906) and the Philippines ($369,340) offering cheaper alternatives to Thailand, while Cambodia ($389,146) was on a par with the Land of Smiles in terms the amount of savings needed.
In order to retire in Singapore ($946,993) or Hong Kong ($871,578), youd need around three times the amount of savings needed to retire in Thailand. (NNT World)
