For Twin Cities power couple and their family, home is an extension of faithful service – Minneapolis Star Tribune

After a natural gas explosion tore through a Minnehaha Academy building in August 2017, claiming the lives of two cherished employees, pathbreaking couple Y. Marc and Alicia Belton joined other officials, parents and community members in a multipronged effort to repair the breach at their children's school.

Quiet and self-effacing, the philanthropists aimed to rebuild the physical structure and help heal the community's jagged spirit.

"Marc and Alicia have been generous with their time, talent and treasure even before the event," said Minnehaha Academy President Donna Harris, who herself was lauded for her heroic leadership during the episode. "They exude warmth and care, with a great heart for service. They've always been people connectors and have hosted many events in their homes."

Their current home, a historic Mediterranean-style house overlooking Minneapolis' Lake of the Isles, is one they moved to almost a decade ago. Even before they took up residence, Alicia, one of the earliest licensed Black female architects in Minnesota history and the incoming 2022 president of the Minnesota chapter of the American Institute of Architects, led a nine-month top-to-bottom update that brought an aesthetic cohesion to the restoration.

All that work was necessary because of the house's long, sometimes complicated history. First owned by the manager and editor of a publication called the Daily Market Record, one Plumleigh Rogers, the 1916 property reflected the aesthetic choices of subsequent occupants over the decades, including former news anchor Paul Magers and Par Ridder, the onetime Pioneer Press publisher who also served briefly in the same capacity at the Star Tribune.

"Every owner did something different, and it wasn't a merged vision," Alicia said. "There was a circular staircase that somebody wanted, but it was overdone. In some places, it was 2 feet wide. Paul Magers put the pool in, but the way it was, you couldn't see it from inside. We opened it up to see the kids."

In their previous place, a Spanish-style house near Lake Harriet, the Beltons regularly entertained family and friends with gatherings marked by joyful music, bonhomie and scrumptious food. They also hosted a summer open house that was the culmination of a golf tournament Marc holds annually as part of the family's extensive philanthropic efforts. That summer function drew an eclectic, diverse mix of people from all walks of life, including from the faith, corporate and arts communities.

When the Beltons thought about moving, they wanted their home to still be a place of welcome. But they also had other reasons, including having "a place where my mother-in-law could stay," Alicia said.

Mildred Belton, a retired administrative assistant now in her 90s, lives independently in suburban New York, where Marc grew up. Belton's late father, York, was a police officer.

The mother-in-law suite is still waiting, Marc said. "If she ever decides to [move in], it's ready."

That area of the house was part of the renovation. So was the kitchen, which was reoriented.

The Beltons put the laundry room upstairs "much more practical," Alicia said. In fact, the upstairs was reduced to the studs, and redone to open up space, reorient space and bring in more light.

And they took out the squished, tight-throated circular staircase in favor of one that now breathes.

The house also reflects a music-minded love story between a New Yorker and a Texan who met in Minnesota. As a teenager, Marc, a bass player, gigged with professional funk bands in nightclubs and had thoughts of a life onstage. But after his brilliant older sister, Monique, got into Harvard, his parents pressed him to focus on his studies.

He did, and matriculated at Dartmouth, then later earned an MBA at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, where he studied marketing.

When he came to General Mills in 1983, Marc intended to stay a couple of years. But in his 32-year career at the global food giant, he made huge strides for the company, and himself. One of his many milestones includes becoming the youngest president of a company division. His success created space for others in the corporate community even as he mentored, and continues to mentor, new talent.

Alicia, who plays piano, moved to the Twin Cities after graduate school at the University of Illinois to take a job at 3M, where she was a project engineer. The daughter of an African American father and Thai mother, she grew up in Galveston, Texas, dreaming of becoming an architect. But she had no nearby role model, only TV dad Mike Brady of "The Brady Bunch."

Now she has her own company, Urban Design Perspectives, and is a more-immediate muse to others.

"Alicia is an even-keel, classy, inspiring role model for me," said Twin Cities architect Demaris Hollingsworth. "I'm not much younger she could be my big sister. But she's so mature, centered and balanced, I feel like a kid around her. And, of course, she's a pioneer in our field."

Marc and Alicia came together "by providence, not coincidence," said longtime family friend Kimberly Price, who served as a senior 3M executive but has become better known as a matchmaker. "They are both smart and beautiful and share so much in common. But the strongest thing about them is their faith. They both believe deeply that to whom much is given, much is required, and they live that quietly."

Price introduced them 25 years ago when Mildred Belton called from New York to ask for help with the search for a spouse for her only son. Two weeks later, Price saw Alicia Grant at the church they both attended, Pilgrim Baptist in St. Paul. Alicia was working with a clutch of kids in the nursery.

"I saw her with those children, and she had an ethereal presence about her," she said. "If she could love up on the little kids, she could love up on the big kid Marc."

She called Alicia on a lunch break to get to know her. That initial chat lasted 45 minutes.

"Sweet as could be," Price said. "I just knew: God made them to be together."

Faith informs nearly everything about the Beltons' life. If their home is beautiful, it's for a bigger purpose. It's in the family's mission statement, which hangs on a wall near the front.

Their home "will be a vehicle for blessing and ministry," it says, and their works will be evidence of their faith to "glorify the Lord."

Ask them about any of their achievements, and they become bashful. They give credit to others with whom they work. Most important, they point to the heavens.

"If anything great happens in our lives, it's because the Lord has done something with us," Marc said. "We serve an audience of one."

While that may be, it doesn't stop folks from admiring their intellect, generosity and spirit.

"Marc brings a different way of thinking to a conversation, one that asks questions I hadn't considered, or frames them in a way that I wouldn't expect, which in turns expands my own thinking," said Joseph Haj, artistic director of the Guthrie Theater, on whose board Marc has served for years. "He is so smart, so capable and so philanthropically and community-minded that he brings much to the table in whatever he does."

Architect Hollingsworth has been to the house and seen the renovation.

"Alicia redesigned it with such high quality," she said. "The way it flows, entertaining in their home is easy because the rooms open up to the patio. But there's this sense of calm and peace about it. And, of course, I remember the food. Very, very good."

The Beltons see a lot of work before them.

There are still only a handful of Black female architects in Minnesota and about 500 nationwide Alicia noted. She intends to do something about that.

The Belton Family Foundation, which someday will pass to children Alexander, 14, and Gabrielle, 11, supports a host of causes, including a village in Sierra Leone. Marc, through the Wisefellows Consulting business he launched after his retirement, formally and informally nurtures a new generation of leaders.

The family also is involved in their church, Sanctuary Covenant.

There are ample causes in the Twin Cities, including at Minnehaha Academy, where Marc is board chair and has led the capital campaign. Alicia also serves on the board of Habitat for Humanity.

Their house is a testament to their good works, Price said. It's a locus and launchpad for "the great things that they're doing."

If they have made their home a warm sanctuary, it is because they desire that others have the same, even those they will never know.

CH-53K King Stallion Beats CH-47 Chinook To Become Israel’s Next Heavy Lift Helicopter – The Drive

Posted: at 3:32 am

At the same time, the King Stallion is also significantly more expensive than the Chinook. The Pentagon 2021 Fiscal Year budget request pegged the King Stallion's unit cost at around $125 million. Though the exact configuration of the Chinook variant that Boeing had offered to Israel is unclear, which was reportedly a hybrid of sorts between the MH-47G flown by the U.S. Army's elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment and the Canadian military's CH-147F, the price of a standard new-build CH-47F version is around $42 million.

Lockheed Martin has been touting the fact that the CH-53K can leverage much of the existing infrastructure that the IAF uses to operate and maintain its existing CH-53s as a mitigating factor. The company also says the King Stallion has a similar physical footprint to the Yasurs making it easier to use hangars and other facilities already established for the older helicopters.

"This is a smart aircraft with sensors built-in. Following our commercial helicopter sustainment model, the aircraft can analyze itself," Dan Schultz, President and CEO of Sikorsky, said last year, referring to the artificial intelligence-driven predictive maintenance capabilities of the King Stallion, which are designed to further help reduce maintenance and logistics costs. "Israel has a stark choice: they can go with an aircraft that competed with the CH-53D already, or they can look into the future with the CH-53K."

Israel has been flying CH-53 helicopters since 1969, when it received its first two examples, after having selected the type over the CH-47. These were roughly equivalent to the twin-engine CH-53D Sea Stallions and were also known by Sikorsky's internal company designation S-65C-3. They had a much greater payload capacity than any other helicopter in Israeli service at that time and immediately proved their worth during the War of Attrition with the Palestinians and the country's Arab neighbors. Yasurs were famously critical to the success of an operation that resulted in the capture of Soviet-made P-12 radar from Egypt, a major intelligence coup.

The helicopters have continued to be an important part of Israeli operations since then and are used to perform various specialized missions, including combat search and rescue, special operations forces support, and electronic warfare. They have also received significant upgrades over the years. In the last 25 years or so the remaining fleet has gone through two major upgrade and life extension efforts, bring the helicopters first to a standard known as Yasur 2000 and then to the latest Yasur 2025 configuration.

"In total, the 2025 upgrade encompasses around 20 new systems, with these also including advanced electronic warfare equipment, satellite communications, an altitude hold and hovering stabilization system, and a laser obstacle ranging and display system," according to a story from Flight International in 2009. "Sikorsky has also supplied replacement main gearboxes, with the type's original equipment having been monitored closely for cracks over recent years."

Unfortunately, the helicopters are becoming more difficult to operate and maintain, something that has become increasingly apparent in recent years. In November 2019, a Yasur made an emergency landing after a fire broke out on board. Everyone on the helicopter escaped unscathed, but the CH-53 was destroyed. The incident led to the grounding of the entire fleet. In January 2020, two weeks after that grounding was lifted, another Yasur had to make an emergency landing due to a technical issue. Three months later, yet another one of the helicopters suffered a technical fault that forced it to land.

The acquisition now of new CH-53Ks will ensure that the Israelis continue to have access to this kind of valuable heavy-lift helicopter capability for decades to come.

STAVANGER, Norway Equinor and its partners will end production from the Veslefrikk field in the Norwegian Sea in spring 2022.

Operations started in 1989 through Norways first floating production platform, and the facilities have since produced over 400 MMboe.

Investments to date total around NOK20 billion ($2.36 billion), and the fields productive life has been extended several times: it was originally expected to cease production in 2009.

Veslefrikk B is a semisubmersible production platform is connected to the fixed Veslefrikk A wellhead platform (converted from the drilling rig West Vision).

In 2002 the field also began processing from the Huldra field (since decommissioned) with a shared control room and crew.

Equinor operates Veslefrikk from its center in Sandsli outside Bergen, which also oversees operations at the Oseberg area.

In the fall of 2020, the company submitted its decommissioning plan to the Norwegian authorities. Its new Field Life Extension (FLX) business area has responsibility for implementing decommissioning projects on the Norwegian continental shelf.

Before Veslefrikk B can be towed to shore for dismantling in the fall of 2022, its topside systems must be shut down and cleaned, and oil and gas export pipelines cleaned and disconnected.

Over the years 74 wells have been drilled on the field. Archer started plugging wells from Veslefrikk B last month, with Baker and Ardyne supplying most other drilling and well services: a total of 24 wells will be plugged.

Veslefrikk A should be removed in 2025/26.

Before mid-2021 Equinor expects to award contracts for removal and dismantling of Veslefrikk A; dismantling and recycling of Veslefrikk B; and work on the seafloor associated with export pipeline cleaning and disconnection.

Further contracts will follow for the planning, management, and implementation of the towing of Veslefrikk B to shore.

Other partners in the license are Petoro, Repsol Norge, and Wintershall Dea Norge.

Objective: To observe the efficacy of Actinidia eriantha polysaccharide (AEPS) combined with PD1 antibody therapy in colorectal cancerxenograft mice. Methods: CT26 cells were inoculated into 80 C57BL/6 mice to establish the colorectal cancer xenograftmouse model. Mice were divided evenly into a model group, AEPS group, anti-PD1 group, and combined group. AEPS 5mL/kgday was given orally and 10 mg/kg anti-PD1 injected intravenously for 28 days. Tumor growth and mouse survival were observed. Tumor-cell proliferation and metastasis markers Ki67, N-cadherin, KLF4, and Oct4 were detected with immunochemistry and Western blotting, T-cell infiltration in spleens and tumors was detected with MTT and flow cytometry. IFN and TNF were detected with ELISA.Results: Tumor growth was significantly retarded and survival prolonged in the AEPS, anti-PD1, and combined groups. Ki67 expression decreased in the anti-PD1 and combined groups, and N-cadherin, KLF4, and Oct4 expression decreased in the AEPS and combined groups. IFN and TNF levels, T-cell infiltration in spleen, and tumor all increased distinctively in the AEPS and combined groups. The combined group showed better antitumor effects and life-extension effect than the other two groups. Conclusion: AEPS and PD1 antibody-combination therapy can suppresses tumor growth and prolong survival of colorectal cancerxenograft mice by regulating immunofunction, and the combined therapy showed better therapeutic efficacy than the single treatment.

Travis Scott teases new album Utopia: Im trying to expand the sound – NME.com

Posted: at 3:30 am

Travis Scott has continued to tease his fourth album Utopia, ahead of its anticipated release later this year.

The rapper, who seemingly revealed the album title last summer, opened up in a new interview with pioneering film director Robert Rodriguez for i-D Magazine.

I never tell people this, and Im probably going to keep it a secret still, but Im working with some new people and Im just trying to expand the sound, Scott said about his new album.

Ive been making beats again, rapping on my own beats, just putting everything together and trying to grow it really. Thats been one of the most fun things about working on this album. Im evolving, collaborating with new people, delivering a whole new sound, a whole new range.

When asked if he feels pressure to create something as ambitious as 2018s Astroworld, which spawned its own music festival, he replied: Its never about repeating myself, Im just trying to make the next saga each album is like a saga.

I dont feel no pressure, except to keep the fans alive. Theres so much more ground I can cover, and I want to cover it, and I love the challenge of it. I want to make a f*cking new sound. I might spend days banging my head against a wall trying to figure it out, but once I do it, its like ultimate ecstasy.

Reflecting on the last year, Scott also explained how the pandemic has allowed him to spend more time creating the record.

It made me way more productive, he said.

You know, youre not doing any shows. You not really doing too much traveling. You in the crib, and I got the studio at home and I have the peace to record all day, you know? Obviously like, you lose a little bit by not being able to travel and, you know, just see the earth.

Scott added that the album is coming soon, although a release date is yet to be confirmed.

His most recent release came in The Plan, a 2020 collaboration with Ludwig Gransson for Christopher Nolans Tenet.

Food security, not eating meat, is the real problem in New York City – Duluth News Tribune

Posted: at 3:30 am

A news release arrived in my inbox capturing my attention with the subject line of New York City Mayor's Office of Animal Welfare promotes meat reduction. I wish I could show up at their office to investigate myself. Instead, I read the email, read more online and wrote this opinion column. The email and context of it reminded me of The Fleecing of America news segments from Tom Brokaw which captured my attention as a child and teen, examining wasteful government spending.

For me, wasteful spending is trying to "reduce" one sector of agriculture in the most food-rich country in the world rather than addressing true food issues, like feeding hungry people in our communities.

To read more of Katie Pinke's The Pinke Post, click here.

An animal protection group, that I leave unnamed to not give it any undeserved attention, went on in the email to say meat reduction should not just be for New Yorkers but for all Americans. And evidently for all Americans, that includes the publisher of an agriculture media brand, me, to receive the email.

By reducing demand for meat, dairy, and eggs, we can create a shift towards farming practices that are more sustainable and kinder to animals, said the email.

Agriculture cannot stop standing up for all types of food production, in all states and countries says Katie Pinke. (Erin Brown / Grand Vale Creative)

According to Food Bank of New York City research:

I am not a city dweller, but this isn't a city-only problem. If you do your own research, youll find food insecurity dwells in your own backyard, no matter how rural or urban your home is.

We have meal gaps in our rural counties, towns and cities. We have neighbors, unable to put on enough food on the table to feed themselves and their families.

Show empathy. We're proudly a bountiful agricultural nation, yet this email from a city with a "meat reduction" effort shows me our food system remains disconnected and in some areas, broken.

Our food-rich systems cannot be fixed without collaboration and change between the entire food system from the fields and pastures where food is grown and raised to distribution, including through government-funded food programs.

Where is the disconnect, some ask? Rather than attack a specific farming practice or sector of agriculture, why not put our time and resources, including government spending, toward addressing food insecurity, including all types of protein reaching all types of people?

No one in an animal activist or commonly labeled protection group trying to take down a sector of agriculture, this being animal ag, should be given a platform within city government when they have hungry people they aren't feeding. Before "reducing" any food choice, find methods to address food insecurity in your own backyards.

Is it too much to dream and then set out to achieve an agriculture diverse utopia? We need meat, dairy, eggs, fruits and vegetables to reach a variety of eaters and locations.

While my initial reaction to the New York City email was that I hope and pray I never have any reason to live in New York City, or any city for that matter, where a "meat reduction" crusade is funded, I realize I need to do better as an agriculturist. The email serves as a reminder.

Agriculture cannot stop standing up for all types of food production, in all states and countries.

Stand up for the fleecing of America against our farmers and food systems. Use your voice and ability to connect with lawmakers and policymakers and utilize Americas ability to bountifully grow a variety of food rather than stay silent against those trying to take out and remove sectors of agriculture.

Travis Scott Reveals New Details About Utopia Album, Still Wants to Make Astroworld Festival Happen This Year – XXLMAG.COM

Posted: at 3:30 am

The rumblings and murmurs pertaining to Travis Scott'sUtopia album calmed a bit recently, but in a new interview, La Flame has revealed that he's currently working on the effort, which will have a sound unlike anything he's done before.

During a conversation with film director Robert Rodriguez for the Spring 2021 issue of i-Dmagazine, Travis explained, "I never tell people this, and Im probably going to keep it a secret still, but Im working with some new people and Im just trying to expand the sound. Ive been making beats again, rapping on my own beats, just putting everything together and trying to grow it really. Thats been one of the most fun things about working on this album. Im evolving, collaborating with new people, delivering a whole new sound, a whole new range."

When Rodriguez asked about Travis Scott's approach to following up the success of his 2018album,Astroworld, the "Sicko Mode" rapper remained confident. "Its never about repeating myself, Im just trying to make the next saga each album is like a saga. You know, youre one of my favorite directors. Everything you fucking do man," he said.

The acclaimof Astroworld goes without saying, but the former 2013XXL Freshman doesn't feel any pressure to deliver an album that will be just as good, if not better.

"I dont feel no pressure, except to keep the fans alive," he told the publication. "Theres so much more ground I can cover, and I want to cover it, and I love the challenge of it. I want to make a fucking new sound. I might spend days banging my head against a wall trying to figure it out, but once I do it, its like ultimate ecstasy."

Scott also revealed that he's still hoping to make his extravagant Houston-basedAstroworld Festival happen later this year. Despite the current state of the pandemic, he remained optimistic, saying, "Hopefully we can bring it back at the end of this year. Around November."

While a release date for the album hasn't been shared yet, it's good to know that more music from Travis is on the way.

Travis Scott reveals his next album will have a whole new sound – REVOLT TV

Posted: at 3:30 am

Travis Scott offered fans some details about his next album Utopia during a recent interview for i-D Magazine. Speaking with From Dusk Till Dawn and The Mandalorian director Robert Rodriguez, La Flame revealed hes experimenting with a whole new sound for his Astroworld follow-up.

I never tell people this and Im probably going to keep it a secret still, but Im working with some new people and Im just trying to expand the sound, Scott said in the interview. Ive been making beats again, rapping on my own beats [and] just putting everything together and trying to grow it really.

Thats been one of the most fun things about working on this album, he added. Im evolving, collaborating with new people [and] delivering a whole new sound [and] a whole new range.

In terms of the pressure for commercial success following Astroworlds massive 2018 takeover, Scott said he only feels pressured to deliver the very best quality music to his fans.

Theres so much more ground I can cover and I want to cover it, he said. ... I love the challenge of it. I want to make a fucking new sound. I might spend days banging my head against a wall trying to figure it out, but once I do it, its like ultimate ecstasy.

Scott also revealed how raising his 3-year-old-daughter Stormi has changed his process.

Fatherhood influences my job. It has a huge impact. Its a major inspiration, he told i-D. Especially Stormi. Shes always interested; she catches on and learns things so fast.

As far as when fans can expect Utopia, Scott promised the highly anticipated record is coming soon.

The Houston native also spoke to his recent lucrative partnerships and how they connect to his past.

... With Nike those are the shoes I wear; the shoes Ive been wearing since I was a kid, he said. Playstation when it was rough when I was a kid, gaming was an escape. When I was younger and in the studio, sometimes we couldnt really afford to eat, you know? So McDonalds held it down.

... But its about being able to create an experience, even if these are small things, he continued. These collaborations are tools in a way, pieces of everyday life; big brands that allowed us to generate ideas. In 2021 we want to keep evolving, keep generating.
