As Robots Fill the Workplace, They Must Learn to Get Along – WIRED
Posted: at 8:26 am
So many robots work at Changi General Hospital in Singapore that until recently it wasnt uncommon to find two delivery bots sitting in a hallway or outside an elevator in a standoff.
Such impasses used to happen several times a day, says Selina Seah, who directs the hospitals Center for Healthcare Assistive and Robotics Technologies. Unsure how to move around another object, or human passersby, the robots would simply freeze, each waiting for the other to move first. The humans would have to actually go down and pull them apart, she says.
Seah says Changi has about 50 robots, from eight manufacturers. As at other hospitals, robotic systems assist professionals with delicate surgical procedures and guide patients through surgery and rehabilitation exercises. At Changi, dozens of mobile robots also perform tasks like cleaning or delivering medication, supplies, and patient notes. But theyre not good at communicating with one another.
The standoffs at Changi offer a glimpse of a future problem for many businesses, as multiple robots, from different makers, struggle to navigate within the same busy spaces. Besides health care, robots are rapidly being adopted in manufacturing and logistics and are starting to appear in stores and offices.
To alleviate the standoffs, Changi is using software developed by Open Robotics, a nonprofit, to let robots from different manufacturers talk to each other and negotiate safe passage. Open Robotics maintains the Robot Operating System (ROS), open-source software that is widely used to develop commercial and research robots; the software Changi is using allows robots not based on ROS to communicate as well.
Open Robotics hopes such free and easily modified software will be widely adopted and enable greater interoperability of workplace robots. Open source has real potential to allow lots of different organizations to work together, says Morgan Quigley, a cofounder of Open Robotics and its chief architect.
Worldwide shipments of robots have grown steadily over the past decade or so, though theyve slowed recently due to trade tensions and the pandemic. The number of industrial robots, such as the robotic arms found on manufacturing lines, in use rose 85 percent to 2.7 million in 2019, compared with 2014, according to the International Federation of Robotics, an industry group. Sales of new industrial robots fell in 2019, but sales of service robots, including delivery and cleaning bots, rose 32 percent that year, according to the IFR.

By Express News Service
HYDERABAD:Hyderabad-based Grene Robotics on Friday signed an MoU with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna Defence PSU, to jointly develop an Autonomous MANPAD Data Link (ADML) system, a first-of-its-kind air defence solution that brings isolated MANPAD (man-portable air-defense system) operators into a networked environment.
The MoU, which was signed at the Aero India 2021, aims at bolstering the countrys autonomous air defence capability. This technological collaboration will reduce asymmetries in controlled warfare and will be first deployed on MANPADS, which are short-range weapon systems.
Deploying the system in MANPADS will enable a command centre to give real time firing commands to Armed personnel by taking into consideration technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality. On the ground, when deployed, the system has the capability to reduce fratricide and is capable of handling all types of weather.
Rajasekhar MV, director (R&D), BEL, said, AMDL is a state-of-the-art data link system, which exploits AI to provide a comprehensive air-defence solution. We are happy to be partnering with Grene Robotics, which is a niche company working in the core areas of AI and robotics.
Gopi Krishna Reddy, director, Grene Robotics, said AMDL was a step forward in air defence technology. He said it was to be developed with the combined capabilities of BEL and Grene and was the first of many last mile C5I Systems in the air defence space.

Elmore County teachers engage in robotics training | News | thewetumpkaherald.com – Wetumpka Herald
Posted: at 8:26 am
Twenty teachers from throughout Elmore County Public Schools gathered at the systems central office on Monday for a day of robotics training.
From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., teachers who serve as robotics coaches at their respective schools engaged in training through an Auburn University program called S.C.O.R.E. -- Southeastern Center of Robotics Education.
The goal of the day was to help the teachers feel comfortable leading their robotics teams. The teachers learned about the resources available to them, VEX IQ competition basics, how to choose their competition teams, what to do at practices and goal setting. At the end of the day, they participated in a mini-tournament for the VEX IQ game called Rise Above.
Tracy Wright, the districts STEM director, said the robotics professional development training aligns with the districts initiative to have at least two robotics teams at each of its middle and elementary schools.
Right now, we have robotics teams at all of the high schools and some of the middle schools, Wright said. Now were becoming more uniformed and offering robotics teams at all elementary and middle schools. Each school will have at least two teams consisting of at least four students per team.
Wright said the teams can exist in the form of an after school club or an in-school enrichment opportunity. It is up to each school to decide what works best for them.
The district was able to expand its robotics team offerings thanks to two grants, the Alabama Robotics Competition Grant and the Google Buddy grant. It was through the Google Buddy grant that the district gained access to the training offered by S.C.O.R.E.
Each grant offers STEM-related professional development opportunities, as well as robots, robot parts, a curriculum and chances to compete. The teachers present at Mondays training will participate in the VEX IQ Challenge through the Google Buddy grant.
Through Google Buddy, teachers also have access to Google employees and can arrange to talk to them for advice and guidance. Eclectic Middles library media specialist Amy Harrell is set to speak with a Google employee on Wednesday.
I have a Zoom meeting with Conrad from Switzerland on Wednesday, she said. Hes going to coach me on how to be a better coach. This is program is literally connecting us to people around the world.
Holtville Middle School eighth grade science teacher Stacy Chancellor said one of her favorite things about the program is that all of the needed materials are provided.
You are supplied with what you need, so every team comes into the competition on the same playing field, Chancellor said. Its not about how much money a school has.
Matthew Buckley, S.C.O.R.E. program administrator, and Jennifer Spencer, S.C.O.R.E. assistant director explained that although the robots are provided, they are very customizable. There are certain preset robot designs that teams can use or they can come up with their own design.
Throughout the competition season, Spencer said its common for teams to tweak their robots to make them work better. Sometimes, teams end up with a robot thats a lot different from the one they started with, but thats precisely the point.
Our overall vision for the robotics teams is that we want our students to be able to define and solve their own problems versus simply solving ones in textbooks, Wright said. Students who can do this come up with innovative and creative ideas. Were trying to help them develop 21st-century skills and were preparing them for jobs that havent even been invented yet.
Aside from improving problem-solving and critical thinking skills, robotics teams also help cultivate soft skills like teamwork, collaboration and respect for each others ideas, which can be a constant battle with middle school students, according to Chancellor.
After playing Rise Above, where the objective of the game is to use the robot to move cylindrical structures into designated squares, Eclectic Elementary teacher Emily Wells she has a new appreciation for the tasks that students take on.
This was my first time participating in any sort of robotics competition and it was a lot harder than I thought it would be, but the kids are going to be so much better than us, she said.
Harrell added that playing the game helped her get a better understanding of the game and its rules.
Playing the game gave me a better understanding of how to help the kids, she said. Seeing all of this will also help me make my goals more clear for my students. My robotics teams are set and were preparing to start competing this spring.

NTHU Researchers Take Robotics to the Next Level – Business Wire India
Posted: at 8:26 am
Hsinchu, Taiwan:
Although widely used in manufacturing, robots require much more agility for use in nursing and rehabilitation. With this in mind, an interdisciplinary research team led by Professor James Chang of the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering has recently applied the latest advances in AI, biomechanics, and human-factor engineering to develop a robot that can imitate the meticulous movements of a human hand. Endowed with sharp senses of vision and touch, the robots hands are nimble enough to catch a ball and pull out a tissue.
This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20210204005049/en/
An interdisciplinary research team led by Distinguished Professor James Chang of the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering has recently developed a humanoid robot that imitates the meticulous movements of a human hand. (Photo: National Tsing Hua University)
Completely designed and manufactured in Taiwan, this dexterous two-handed robot has been dubbed the Tsing-Hua Gentleman by NTHU President Hocheng Hong, who said that its destined to play a leading role in the field of medical care.
Advanced robotic agility
What makes this robot unique is that one hand provides strength, while the other is highly nimble. Chang said that a nimble hand is required in most work in medical applications, such as in covid-19 test where a hand should be nimble enough to gently operate a cotton swab in-and-out of a person's nostril or throat. Overcoming limitation of six-jointed robotic arms, Changs robotic arm has seven joints, enabling agile movements, even in ways that human arm cant. The robot developed by Changs team closely imitates those of the human hand, with level of dexterity reached by digitizing a human hands motion, making the robotic hands nimble enough to hold a baby or turn over a bed-ridden patient.
Human-like perception
Chang explained that this nimble hand imitates the design of human fingers, utilizing pneumatic transmission to control its movement with a US-patented precise pressure sensing device that responds to changes of magnetic force. Comparing to robots requiring a separate sensor for each direction, Changs robotic hand has only one sensor for multi-direction sensing, making it more like a human hand. With a 3D visual system to scan surrounding objects over a wide range, this robot possesses sense of space and ability to use AI to identify objects.
Inspiration
A Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University, USA, Chang previously worked at IBM, specializing in mechatronics and robotics. After returning to Taiwan, he met and collaborated with his primary schoolmate Yu-Cheng Pei, a rehabilitation physician at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, under support from Ministry of Science and Technology to develop assistive devices for use by patients with impaired hand function.
Changs initial impetus for developing this robot came from his wife seeing a robot on TV that could cook food. I told her it was just an animation, but her request was so earnest that I promised to invent a real robot that really could cook for us, Chang said with a smile.
Taiwan will become a super-aged society by 2025. Thus, Chang is aiming to develop a robot capable of performing a wide range of services required by the elderly, and, of course, cooking and washing the dishes.

Offshore Wind Is On at Dominion Energy! – The Motley Fool
Posted: at 8:26 am
To say that 2020 was an important year for giant U.S. utility Dominion Energy (NYSE:D) would be an understatement. It completely revamped its business, cut its dividend, and got a good head start on its next major growth initiative. Here's a little background on what's going on, with an update on the company's big offshore wind plans in Virginia.
Over the past decade or two, Dominion Energy has been working to reduce risk. That started with the sale of upstream energy assets (oil drilling) and culminated in 2020 with the sale of most of its midstream business (pipelines) to Berkshire Hathaway. What's left is basically a pure-play electric and natural gas distribution utility serving 7 million customers across 16 states. At this point, its utility operations are highly regulated and fairly predictable.

That's the good news. The bad news is that this overhaul came with a 33% dividend cut. That, however, makes sense given that it sold a huge chunk of its business. But, going forward, Dominion is expecting to offer investors more robust dividend growth than it was capable of providing before the sale. There are two pieces to this. The company's payout ratio dropped from around 80% to what management expects to be about 65% in 2021. From this stronger dividend-paying position, the dividend should expand approximately 6% a year. That's pretty generous in the utility sector, and way better than the roughly 2% increase before it overhauled its business.
Backing that growth is the company's capital investment plan. As a largely regulated utility, Dominion must get its investments approved by the government. That's going to increasingly include renewable power options, like the offshore wind project Dominion has started in Virginia. It's a huge, long-term venture. And it's off to a great start.
On Oct. 14, 2020, Dominion announced that a two-turbine, 12-megawatt wind project 27 miles off of the coast of Virginia Beach had completed reliability testing and was ready to become a part of the grid. If you consider the amount of power being added here, this is a non-event. The company's Virginia business owned 21.1 gigawatts of generating capacity in 2019. Looking at this a different way, 12 megawatts is about enough to power just 3,000 homes. This project is barely a rounding error for Dominion, but don't underestimate its importance.
It was the first step in a multiyear effort and, perhaps most significantly, it allowed Dominion to get its feet wet in the offshore wind space. What the company learned from building it will go into stage two of the plan, which is slated to begin in 2024. According to Dominion, this multistage project is the largest offshore wind project in the United States at 2.6 gigawatts, or enough to power 660,000 homes. That's a much bigger deal.
At this point, it looks like the project will account for around $3.5 billion worth of capital investment between 2020 and 2024, with more to be spent in the years beyond that. Originally this was seen as an $8 billion investment spread over three additional building periods, each with about 800 megawatts of power. Dominion, however, seems to be thinking even bigger as it learns from its construction successes. A recent update on the company's offshore wind goals highlighted that by 2035 it could spend as much as $17 billion in the offshore wind space. The low-end figure given was the $8 billion price tag originally put on the Virginia project. Clearly, the offshore wind push is one investors need to watch.
There's an old saying that you have to walk before you run. Dominion, having revamped its business, is definitely taking a deliberate approach with its big offshore wind project. You might even suggest, based on the tiny two-windmill project it recently completed, that it's crawling right now. But these early moves will help to inform and improve the construction processes in the upcoming, larger, stages.Keep an eye on the story here when it holds its upcoming earnings conference calls. Assuming things go well, which they seem to be at this point, offshore wind will be an increasingly important part of Dominion's growth story.
