Rolando Dy renews ties with BRAVE CF – Tiebreaker Times

Posted: at 2:17 pm

Rolando Dy is set to spend his prime years with BRAVE CF.

The enigmatic Filipino lightweight signed a three-year, five-fight deal with the promotion based in the Middle East.

And for the 2020 BRAVE CF Fighter of the Year and The Hit List Comeback Fighter of the Year, he is just grateful to find a home after an uncertain 2019.

I was getting very proud and confident again. I was slowly forgetting who put me in this position and thats the Lord Jesus Christ, said the second generation fighter.

My career was almost over. I was humbled, but I asked God to give me a second chance and I will preach His Name in front of the world.

After his release from UFC back in 2018, Dy fought five times in 2019. Though going 3-2 for the year, he dropped his last two bouts by way of finishes.

Despite the pandemic, Dy did not stop, eventually being booked by BRAVE last September to go up against Maciek Gierszewski. He won the bout via split decision to earn a title eliminator match against John Brewin in November.

Dy put up one of his finest performances, taking a dominant unanimous decision win that paved the way for a shot at gold and a very good contract.

I would like to thank my God for giving me a good fighting contract in BRAVE Combat Federation.

Four Walls for a Few Months Longer

State Extends, Expands Eviction and Foreclosure Bans Credited with Saving Thousands of Lives

Above: Belongings of a homeless person. Below: State Senator Brian Kavanagh: We are delivering real protection for countless renters and homeowners who would otherwise be at risk of losing their homes.

The State legislature has enacted, and Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed, a measure designed to provide relief for rental tenants and homeowners experiencing financial hardship as a result of ongoing pandemic coronavirus.

At a special session on December 28, the State Senates Democratic majority opened a special session to ratify the the COVID-19 Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act. The measure, which had been passed earlier by the State Assembly, was signed into law on the same day by Mr. Cuomo.

The law imposes a standstill on residential evictions through May 1, provided that can document a COVID-related hardship. (Renters who are unable to provide this proof are still subject to eviction.) Also frozen until May 1 are residential foreclosure proceedings. During that period, both homeowners can offer hardship declarations in court to forestall a bank seeking to seize their property.

This measure takes up where a nationwide federal ban on evictions (imposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in September) left out. The national moratorium was originally set to expire on December 31, although Congress subsequently extended it through the end of January.

The New York State bill was spearheaded by Senator Brian Kavanagh, who chairs the Senate Housing Committee. From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, we have understood that housing security must be an essential part of our effort to protect the health and wellbeing of all New Yorkers. By enacting this comprehensive residential eviction and foreclosure moratorium, we are delivering real protection for countless renters and homeowners who would otherwise be at risk of losing their homes, adding to the unprecedented hardship that so many are facing.

The new law was hailed by housing advocates, with a spokesman for the Lower Manhattan-based Legal Aid Society saying, this critical legislation which establishes one of the strongest statewide eviction moratoriums in the country will defend hundreds of thousands of families from eviction and homelessness.

The stakes appears to be significant in more than just the obvious ways. A December report, Expiring Eviction Moratoriums and COVID-19 Incidence and Mortality, from the Social Science Research Network concluded that the earlier ban on evictions saved the lives of a large number New Yorkers between May and September. The review used statistical analysis to determine that out of the total number of tenants who would have been facing eviction if no ban had been in place, more than 10,000 would have been likely perish from COVID-19 after losing their homes.

During Pandemic and Revenue Shortfall, City Hall Prioritizes Plans for New Ferry

Amid a massive budget crunch that may require laying off several thousand City employees and slashing services, the administration of Mayor Bill de Blasio has nonetheless found room in municipal coffers to move ahead with plans for a new subsidized ferry that will connect Staten Island with Battery Park City, and Midtown.

Construction began in December at the Staten Island site of a new landing for the planned service, which was originally slated to begin running before the close of 2020, but has now been pushed back to the summer of this year, due to logistical complications caused by the ongoing pandemic.

Appeals Court Upholds Order Delaying Move of Homeless Men to FiDi

On Tuesday, a five-judge panel of the New York State Supreme Courts Appellate Division affirmed an earlier ruling (issued on December 3), which has the effect of halting once again the planned transfer of more than 200 men from the Lucerne Hotel, on the Upper West Side, to the Radisson Wall Street Hotel, located at 52 William Street. This order amounts to a partial victory for both sides in the lawsuit, granting some of what opponents of the plan were seeking, while also allowing the administration of Mayor Bill de Blasio limited latitude to begin implementing its proposal on a smaller scale than originally envisioned.

Architects Propose to Reclaim Park Tribeca Lost Nearly a Century Ago

Community Board 1 (CB1) is supporting a plan to create a new park in Tribeca, within the Holland Tunnel Rotary, the six-acre asphalt gyre of exit ramps that connects traffic from New Jersey to Lower Manhattans street grid.

The husband-and-wife architecture team of Dasha Khapalova and Peter Ballman are proposing to create a constellation of small, street-level parks at the corners of the complex (bounded by Hudson, Laight, and Varick Street, as well as Ericson Place) which will double as entry points for a new, submerged central plaza. This plaza is anachronously known as St. Johns Park, although it has not been a publicly accessible space since the Holland Tunnel opened, 94 years ago.

Measuring Impact in a Complex and Interconnected World – Chief Executive Group

Posted: at 2:14 pm

The beginning of a new year typically comes with the usual reflections of the year just ended. Reflecting on 2020 is bound to keep us busy for a while.

In confronting what we can only hope is a once-in-a-century global pandemic, we were forced to adapt to massive changes in our daily lifestyles, almost overnight. Preparing to go to the supermarket became an exercise in germ warfare. Working from home was no longer an employee perk but a necessity for continuity of business. Seeing friends and extended family was suddenly too dangerous.

In the throes of shutdowns and quarantines, 2020 demonstrated just how complex and interconnected the world is, and the extent to which decisions we make affect others whether its where we shop, how we socialize or what we choose to wear (or dont wear) on our faces. The pandemic has renewed a recognition that, even in isolation, the choices we make have broader impacts, and that challenging practices and conventions designed to benefit the greater good has consequences.

As we begin a new year that offers hope of a return to some sort of normalcy, the renewed recognition of our interconnectedness will have implications for global business leaders as well.

Even before the pandemic arrived, the concept of stakeholder capitalism defined as the belief that organizations need to prioritize societal, environmental, and governmental initiatives that benefit all, not just immediate investors, shareholders, and executives was gaining steam. Today, corporate focus around ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) and DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) initiatives are rapidly becoming the norm.

Last year, 181 CEOs of large U.S. companies members of the Business Roundtable agreed in a policy statement that businesses cant flourish over the long term or appropriately reward their shareholders without investing in the stakeholders who make success possible. Prominent voices, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink among them, are now on record stating directly that stakeholder capitalism is the way forward. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has emerged as a lead evangelist for the movement.

But while there has been big talk around stakeholder capitalism, for the most part, companies have failed to deliver fundamental shifts in corporate purpose in a moment of grave crisis when enlightened purpose should be paramount, according to a KKS Advisors study published in September.

As we continue to grapple with the pandemic, alongside a deteriorating climate crisis, escalating demand for real social reform, and an ongoing, stark need for greater diversity in the workplace, chances are good that expectations for companies to deliver on their pledge to contribute more positively to society will grow. CEOs will face greater scrutiny as they are challenged to ensure that their organizations deliver more than just investor rewards, without compromising shareholder value. As this happens, leaders will be equally challenged with gauging and demonstrating the impact of their respective stakeholder initiatives. Doing so will require a rethink in the approach to measurement.

Why? Because measuring good, old-fashioned shareholder value is a relatively straightforward proposition. Corporations have a trove of real-time, historical, empirical data and established processes for collecting, capturing, analyzing, and publishing financial results. Investors, analysts, board members, and executives know where responsibility for financial operations resides within the company.

However, initiatives intended to affect broader stakeholders are more ambiguous, less obvious, and require input from well beyond the CFOs office. They are, therefore, more difficult to measure. The International Business Council has taken significant steps to provide organizations with a uniform set of measurement guidelines for progress reporting. After a year of development, the IBC presented a series of common stakeholder metrics at its Summer Meeting in August 2020, and secured support from a majority of participating members.

But even with this guidance, the onus is still on individual companies and senior leadership to ensure they have the capabilities and processes needed to measure their efforts and demonstrate impact. To do so, organizations engaging in ESG and DEI efforts must ask, and honestly assess, the right questions:

As stated, when it comes to shareholder value, there is no shortage of tangible, financial-based metrics captured by companies and accessible to investors and analysts. The data needed to appropriately measure stakeholder-focused initiatives will be different. Identify the data you will need, determine if you have the ability to capture it, and, if not, identify from where it can be sourced.

Whereas financial performance is the domain of the CFO, performance against ESG and DEI initiatives requires participation from elsewhere in the organization, such as human resources, legal, IT, etc. Determine who, within the company, needs to be involved to measure impact holistically, and ensure they understand their role and responsibilities in the measurement process.

In addition to human capital, determine if your organization has the technological capabilities required to appropriately and accurately capture data and enhance collaboration from disparate sources and corners of the organization. Can the new data streams be effectively combined with your existing analytics to generate useful and valuable insights?

You have the data, the resources, and the insights. Now what? Its time to determine if you have the ability to convert all this intelligence into actionable behavior. Consider the feasibility of creating a cross-operational role responsible for launching new programs, interpreting data, and, as needed, redirecting resources or implementing course corrections.

Time will tell if 2021 will be the year that enlightened business leaders with a renewed respect for our global interconnectedness and an understanding of the inextricable link between stakeholder capitalism and shareholder value will actually make a measurable impact. As we head into a hopeful new year, the organizations that act on their values will create value for everyone. Effective measurement will be crucial in demonstrating the impact of those efforts for all constituencies.

Care about privacy? Don’t just uninstall WhatsApp, here is what you need to do for private digital life – India Today

Posted: at 2:12 pm

Digital privacy is hard work. But now that there is a conversation around it, sparked by the latest WhatsApp policy and terms and conditions that have spooked users, it is a good time to talk about it. By its very nature, the internet is something of an open medium. Over the years, some blinds have been draped over it, doors and windows that can be closed have been created, but still more or less it is an open medium that leaks information. A lot of it is also by design. Tech companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, even Apple up to an extent, have it in their interest to collect user data. And the more data they can collect, the better it is for them.

Given the nature of the web and connected devices, the only way to be sure of not leaking your private data or identity on the web is to cut the cord. In other words, go incommunicado. Take a hammer, smash all your digital devices, then pick a tin-foil hat, place it on your head and move to deep in hills and woods.

Unfortunately, that is not an option. Unless you are a sanyasi (hermit), and nowadays even sanyasis use smartphones.

So, what do you do? How do you remain connected, keep using various digital services and still maintain some level of privacy and keep your data somewhat safe from the tech companies that want to serve you personalised ads, governments and authorities that want to watch your every move, and political parties that want you tracked because you vote? It is difficult, but not impossible.

Uninstalling WhatsApp, which is clearly in the business of tracking users through metadata, and using something like Signal is a good first step. But it is hardly going to make a difference when it comes to your digital privacy. In fact, WhatsApp is one of the better guys when it comes to collecting user data. Some apps are much much worse than it, apps that you use daily.

Consider this: Almost every app that you use tracks you. Apps want your location data, even apps like a notepad. They want to see how long you are using an app, with who you are talking to, who all are in your contacts, what sort of photos are there in your gallery, at what time you use your phone, where you go, and they do it every time you give them permission. An app will ask for GPS permission because it wants to show you local weather. But once it has permission to GPS, it will misuse it. Sure, it will show you local weather, but will also track your location.

There are a few essential steps you can take.

Be careful of apps

1- You should get rid of any app that you dont need. As in not need badly. And this is for the phone apps as well and the laptop or desktop apps. For example, deleting WhatsApp will not help you much unless you also delete Facebook and delete Instagram. In fact, get rid of all the non-essential apps. If you can live without an app, dont install it. Those Beauty Selfie apps? Dont install them. Those ten payment apps? Maybe install just one. All the video and photo-editing apps? Get rid of the ones you dont use.

Basically, be extremely choosy in the apps that you install on your phone.

2- A lot of times you dont need to use an app. You can use a website. It is always safer and more private to use a website to access a service. This is the reason why companies want you to use an app. They get more data this way. This is why many services like to lure users in installing apps by offering app-only discounts or cashbacks.

3- When you use an app, give it permissions that are absolutely necessary. If a selfie app is asking GPS access, dont give it. If Swiggy or Zomato ask for location info, dont give access to GPS. Just manually add the address. Android and iOS now have the option to give access to apps only when they are in use. Choose this option wherever you can. For example: Why should Google Maps have GPS access all the time. It needs GPS information when it is in use when you have opened it. So give it limited access.

Be careful while web browsing

4- apps are just one part of the story. A lot of data is leaked through web browsing, and you have to be very careful with it. There are a number of steps you can take to keep web browsing relatively private:

Avoid Chrome. Chrome is a data hog. In fact, this Google browser arguably collects more data than any other app. Instead you can choose yo use Firefox. And use Firefox with tweaked settings. Tell Firefox not to remember your browsing history. Tell it to deny access to third-party cookies. Tell it to use HTTPS Over DNS, which will help you avoid prying eyes of your internet service provider.

Get into the habit of logging out of websites. For example, if you log into Facebook and then in the same browser you also do your rest of the web browsing, well Facebook is tracking you. Across the pages. It is done through the code Facebook puts on websites through its network. Google too is doing the same and when you have Gmail open, all the web browsing you do in that web browser is tracked. So, what is the way out? Use a different browser. Maybe you can keep Gmail open in Chrome, but do rest of your web browsing in Firefox or Safari or Edge. It means more work for you and its convenient to keep switching between browsers, but you avoid the tracking cookies of Facebook or Google in this way.

You have to understand this nice and proper: To avoid getting tracked by Google and Facebook ad networks on the web, you must not do web browsing when you are logged into any Google or Facebook service. And no, just closing the tab on which you had Gmail or Google Search will not do. You must log out. In fact, in some cases you must log out twice.

Dont give web pages access to location data. Disable their access to installed programs (defaults).

If you are using Firefox, use it with NoScript. This will break some functionality on web pages, but it will also disable a lot of click tracking, or digital fingerprinting that websites use to collect user data. When you need the full functionality of a website, you can temporarily allow that webpage in NoScript.

You can avoid websites that track you. For example, you can use DuckDuckGo instead of Google to search stuff. You can store photos locally, instead of uploading them to Flickr or Google Photos.

Digital privacy is hard work. This is because you are fighting a battle against some very smart people, and some very big companies that are interested in your data. And you are not just fighting this battle, but you are also fighting your own nature that tech companies exploit. We seek convenience. It is convenient to stay logged into Gmail so that when you open Chrome next morning you dont have to go the through remember-the-password-and-login routine again. But it is also how you leak your data. It is convenient to browse the web without NoScript, but you also leak more data that way. It is convenient to use an app instead of the Amazon website to shop but you also give more user data in an app.

Trying to maintain some level of privacy means making a few tough and inconvenient choices. It means switching between browsers while browsing, it means logging out often, it means giving apps manual permission every time you use them, it means not installing apps that you dont need, it means not uploading photos that show how you looked 20 years ago.

What if you need even more privacy. What do you? There are a few options, it all depends on how much privacy you need.

For seven better privacy, you can use a good VPN. A VPN can mask your actual location and can make digital fingerprinting harder. This is the reason a lot of websites hate VPNs. Even Google Search freaks out when users are on VPN and forces CAPTCHAS on them. It is as if the idea is to make VPNs inconvenient, and Google Search freaking out at VPN users is one good reason to use VPNs.

If you can, move to an iPhone. Now, Apple does track its users but it does so for some of its own specific purposes. It doesnt serve advertisements, and it collects far less information than Google does from Android. Apple is also harder on apps, including apps like Facebook. It wants apps to explicitly explain to users why they need access to something, and iOS allows users to control apps behaviour in a better way.

Although it is not practical, you can use TOR browser for complete anonymity while browsing. Though your browsing experience with TOR will become slow, and some websites will freak out when they cant figure out your IP and location etc. Like we said, privacy comes at the cost of convenience.

What if you need even more privacy? All right, in this case first of all you should get rid of your phone. If you cant do without a phone, then maybe move to a feature phone.

As for connecting to the web is concerned, you can move to something like TAILS, a Linux distro that boots from a USB and is created with the sole purpose of anonymous web browsing. Although if your aim is just to avoid advertisers, TAILS is an overkill.

WhatsApp Messenger new terms: Best privacy-focussed apps and services – Moneycontrol

Posted: at 2:12 pm

The recent update to WhatsApp's terms, which forces users to share private data with Facebook, has been the center of discussions on the internet. The news has also opened the eyes of a large set of smartphone users regarding privacy. Most users don't realise that the commonly-used apps and services are a privacy risk. Thankfully, privacy-focused alternative apps and services are available that you can use instead of the widely used ones.

Chat and communications:WhatsApp, with over 2 billion users, has been the most popular service for conversation and voice/video calls. While it encrypts your chats, the recent update to terms makes it a privacy nightmare for users. The alternative app that you should try instead of WhatsApp isTelegramandSignal. Both of them are ranked highly for user privacy and do not share any user data making them safe to use.

Social Networks:Facebook is the most used social networks across the world. However, as Facebook has grown in terms of users, it has also come under fire for privacy issues. With WhatsApp sharing its user data to Facebook directly now, Facebook now has access to two user data streams, which is a significant privacy issue. The good thing is that you have alternative social networks available that are focused on your privacy. If you prefer a Twitter-like interface, you can check outMastodon, which is ad-free, easy to use and does not collect any information. Other alternatives for social networks you should check out includeDiasporaorSocial.

Browser:Your browser works as your gateway to connect to the Internet. The trouble is that almost all of the commonly used browsers (Chrome, Edge, Safari etc.) track the usage and share user data with their parent company. If you are concerned about your privacy, then it would be best to switch to a focussed privacy browser across your devices. Our recommended alternative isBrave browser, which is available across desktop and mobile operating systems. The browser does not track user activity and also comes with a built-in adblocker. The other option to consider isthe Tor Browser, which masks your activity and encrypts your usage data so that no one can track it.

Email:Your email is a significant source of your personal information. This is why almost all of the commonly used email services by users are a privacy risk. Your emails are not encrypted, and the data from your email account is used to show you personalized ads across the various products offered by the parent's company. The only way out is to use a secure email service.ProtonMailis the top choice as an alternative in this scenario. It offers end to end encryption for email and provides the option to self destruct email for additional privacy to the user.

Search engine:While Google is the most used search engine across smartphones and computers, it is not recommended to be used if you value privacy. Google tracks your usage and then uses that information to show personalized ads across products, which is a privacy breach. If you are concerned about your privacy and do not want to be tracked by your search history, then it's time to switch to a privacy focussed alternative such asDuckDuckGo. To avoid this, we recommend changing to a search engine focused on user privacy. DuckDuckGo does not store any user information as it does not track the user this way, it shows the same search results to different users.

Easily Install Tor Browser in Ubuntu and other Linux – It’s FOSS

Posted: at 2:12 pm

This tutorial shows you how to install Tor browser in Ubuntu Linux. Youll also learn a few tips around effectively using the Tor Browser.

Privacy is one of the most discussed topic these days. From the NSA spying on citizens and governments alike to the Facebook data scandals. Privacy-concerned people are trying to find ways to protect their privacy.

For those concerned about agencies spying on their network, the Tor Project provides some of the best solutions to protect their privacy. The Tor Protocol is one of the most popular tools created by the Tor Project.

Tor Project has its own Tor browser which is based on Firefox and configured to protect users privacy and anonymity by using Tor and Vidalia tools that come bundled with it.

Lets see how can you install and use Tor browser.

The Tor browser launcher has made things a lot simpler to install the Tor browser in Linux. It does everything for you automatically, you just have to install it and run it. So, you should prefer using it to get started.

No matter what Linux distribution you have, the recommended method of installing the latest Tor Browser launcher is using Flatpak.

If you have a software store that supports Flatpak (like Pop!_Shop on Pop!_OS), you can easily search for Tor Browser launcher and get it installed.

In case you prefer the terminal, you should first set up Flatpak if you havent and then type in the following commands:

To run the launcher, type in:

When you run the launcher, it will download the tor browser as shown in the screenshot below. All you have to do is follow the on-screen instructions to continue connecting to Tor and launching the browser.

The Tor browser launcher has been included in the Universe repository of Ubuntu so you can easily use the apt command to install it.

If you are using Ubuntu, make sure that you have the Universe repository enabled.

Once you have that, you can install the Tor browser launcher:

Note that this is not the browser itself. Its just the installer. So, to run the launcher, you need to simply type in:

The Tor browser launcher can be downloaded and run in any Linux distribution. You can find the files and instructions on its download page.

All you have to do is to download the file, extract it, go to the extracted folder and run the launcher. Rest of the steps will be the same what I have shown below.

If you didnt run the launcher yet, you should have the following two entries in your application menu Tor Browser and Tor Browser Launcher Settings. Click the Tor Browser Launcher Icon to start the launcher.

Troubleshoot: Its possible that youll see a SIGNATURE VERIFICATION FAILED error if youve installed it using APT (version 0.3.2). Click on the next section to expand and fix for this problem.

When the download finally finishes, you may see this SIGNATURE VERIFICATION FAILED. The error code is GENERIC_VERIFY_FAIL.

To fix this, you need to refresh the outdated GPG key bundled in the Tor launcher with a new one from Ubuntus keyserver.

You can simply click Start to try again and that should fix it. If that still hasnt fixed the issue, you may use the command below to do that:

Normally, it should show that the key has been refreshed:

Now you need to click on Tor browser again to restart the download and installation. It should be quicker than before.

After the download is done, you will probably see a window as shown in the screenshot below. And show a connection screen. Click on connect to start the browser and connect to the network.

Once it is up and running, youll be greeted with the homescreen of the browser.

Tor browser is now successfully installed and you can browse the internet anonymously and privately now.

This is an old method and should only be used in Ubuntu 16.04 or lower versions if the torbrowser-launcher package is not available.

Thanks to Webupd8, we have a PPA that we can use to install Tor browser in Ubuntu and other Ubuntu based Linux OSes easily (if you are not comfortable installing from source code). Open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and use the following commands:

The above PPA should also be valid for Ubuntu 12.04 and other Linux distributions based on it.

If you want to uninstall Tor browser, use the following command:

If you installed it using Flatpak via software center, you can easily uninstall it from there. If you installed it from terminal, type in the following command:

Now that you have installed the Tor browser, let me tell you a few tips about using it. Its up to you if you want to use some or all of these tips.

Go to the Tor network check page to see if your browser is properly connected to the network.

Maximizing the browser allows websites to access device info such as screen size and resolution. If youre concerned about this, do not maximize the browser. The tor browser even shows you a warning if you do it.

By default, Tor Browser chooses the standard security level. However, you can select Safer and Safest levels. You can learn more about the levels here. To access this menu, click the onion below the tabs and select Security Settings.

Try to use search engines that do not track you. A few examples are DuckDuckGo or Disconnect.me. Tor even sets DuckDuckGo as the default search engine. Also avoid installing browser extensions as they may track you.

As Tor is a hidden network so you may come across a few sites that are illegal or promote shady/illegal activities. Try to stay away from these kind of websites.

Unlike a traditional VPN, Tor doesnt just relay your connection through a single location. Instead, your data is relayed and transferred through a number of locations. This is called a Tor Circuit. You can view your current circuit by pressing the lock icon on the left of your address bar.

Instead of using normal websites, you can use Onion services which are part of the Tor network. Some websites are available in this form. They use a .onion address. A few of them are

Beware of the shady and illegal ones, most of them are available only as a .onion service.

Investing in Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc (NASDAQ:PACB) – Securities.io

Posted: at 2:09 pm

Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc (NASDAQ: PACB ) is a biotechnology company that produces DNA sequencing technology for use in a variety of scientific research purposes. Using Pacific Bioscience of California machines, scientists in laboratories around the world are able to rapidly and accurately observe DNA in real-time, allowing for access to a full spectrum of genetic information that was never before been available. As a relatively young company, their hardware and software developments have already led to several significant scientific advancements and as a result, Pacific Biosciences of California has become one of the most well-known names in the biotechnology space.

Based in Silicon Valley, Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc. (PacBio) is a biotechnology company that focuses on creating products and technologies that are used to advance genetic research. The company was founded by Dr. Stephen Turner in 2004 under the name Nanofluidics, Inc. before being renamed a few years later. After only a few short decades, the company has expanded to over 400 employees and boasts a wide range of products including sequencing machines, analytical software, and consumables, which are chemicals used in the process of converting DNA into a format that is ready to be read by sequencing machines.

The company operates in three main niches: plant and animal science, human biomedical research, and microbiology and infectious diseases. Using PacBio machines, plant and animal science research can be conducted on organisms as small as mosquitos that contain as little as 5 nanograms of DNA. Through the study of plant and animal genetics, PacBios technology fuels research that has been used to explore innovative ways of improving food and energy supply. Within the human biomedical science sector, research using PacBio products and services allows for the exploration of genetic variations to determine potential hidden hereditary causes of diseases. By being able to pinpoint epigenetic changes, the specific genetic variation that is behind diseases will be easier to understand. As this technology becomes more widely available due to lower costs, doctors will be able to improve the solve rate involved with diagnosing patients. Finally, PacBio machines are relied upon heavily for microbial and infectious diseases research, which has led to breakthroughs in finding cures and vaccines for a variety of viruses, bacteria, and other microbiotic organisms.

The company is well known for developing innovative technology to study DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis and regulation. In 2011, Pacific of California released its first product, PacBio RS, a DNA sequencing machine, into the market. The PacBio RS was the first machine that used Single-Molecule Real-Time (SMRT) sequencing technology. SMRT is a sequencing technology developed by PacBio that allows scientists to understand the inner workings of biological systems through real-time observation. The SMRT technology has the ability to sequence whole genomes or target specific sections of DNA/RNA. The technology also allows complex populations of bacteria, viruses, and other diseases to be tracked and responses to drug treatments to be observed. The two main advantages of PacBios SMRT sequencing machines over competitors are their low per-genome costs and high volume output. Upon the launch of their first product the PacBio RS, SMRT sequencing had the ability to read 1,110 bases, which are the smallest units of DNA. This technology underwent further innovation throughout the years, and the latest iteration, named the Sequel II system, now has the ability to read upwards of 500 million bases. For these advancements, PacBio and their Sequel II machine received an award from The Scientist for Top 10 Innovations in 2019.

These developments have made present-day DNA reading much faster and more cost-effective than any of its predecessors. The newest systems developed by PacBio also have reading accurate rates of over 99.9% accuracy, which is important to ensure trust and validity within the scientific community. Due to these benefits, this machine has become the first choice of scientists who seek highly accurate readings of large portions of DNA and other genetic material.

As genetic sequencing becomes more and more affordable, new uses for the technology are being discovered every day. PacBio estimates that 10 million human genetic sequences will be conducted annually by 2025 and that one day, the technology will become a routine part of healthcare. With trusted and reliable hardware and software, PacBio is well-positioned to continue its domination in terms of market share and remains a well-regarded partner for companies around the world.

The SMRT sequencing technology developed by PacBio is one of the best in the industry and has garnered interest from competitors. Illumina, another leader in the biotechnology sector, made a move to buy the company for $1.2 billion in 2018. The deal ultimately fell through, with both companies citing the lengthy regulatory approval process as the main reason for mutually agreeing to terminate the contract. Despite this, the interest from other companies shows the attractiveness of SMRT sequencing technology and the complementary role it could play for other emerging biotechnology innovations.

As a company that has only been in existence for under two decades, the innovations made possible by the SMRT sequencing technology developed by PacBio have already had a lasting impact on the scientific community. As costs continue to drop, DNA sequencing has the potential to become a mainstream part of everyday healthcare. The potential market reach of this technology is nearly limitless. As a leader in the space, Pacific Biosciences of California is very well positioned to take advantage of the very promising future growth in the industry.

Medscape study in collaboration with 23andMe finds Primary Care Physicians are increasingly more comfortable with direct-to-consumer genetic health…

Posted: at 2:09 pm

"This study highlights a significant shift in how primary care physicians view DTC genetic health testing."

The report also found 80 percent of PCPs are open or likely to recommend DTC genetic testing for health if asked about it by their patients, and for 61 percent of PCPs, FDA oversight of health reports was a necessary element of any DTC genetic test they might recommend.

"This study highlights a significant shift in how primary care physicians view DTC genetic health testing," said L. Okey Onyejekwe Jr., MD, JD, Vice President of Healthcare Operations and Medical Affairs at 23andMe. "In just two year's time, the data show PCPs are much more accepting, and in some cases wholeheartedly embracing this type of testing, especially tests that include health reports with FDA oversight. As more consumers turn to DTC genetic testing for health insights into their genome, it's encouraging to see that PCPs are much more open to patients bringing their test results into the clinic for further discussion and potential follow up testing when warranted."

When it comes to all genetic testing, not just DTC genetic testing, 71 percent of PCPs are comfortable making appropriate referrals to specialists based on genetic information, compared to 44 percent in 2018. Further, 46 percent of PCPs are comfortable ordering genetic testing, a four-fold increase from 2018, and 41 percent are comfortable using genetic information to make treatment decisions, a two-fold increase over 2018.

"The shift in the primary care community's point of view on genetic testing over a relatively short period of time is striking, and points to the tests results having greater utility and impact in patient care," said Hansa Bhargava, M.D., Medscape Senior Medical Director. "We are pleased that we could contribute to increasing awareness of the role of genetic testing in the primary care environment."
