Mothers pass on allergies to offspring – Jamaica Observer

MOTHERS can pass allergies to offspring while they are developing in the womb, researchers from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) and Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore reported last week in the journal Science .
The study, which employed an animal model conducted according to the National Advisory Committee for Laboratory Animal Research (NACLAR) guidelines, shows that the key antibody responsible for triggering allergic reactions, immunoglobulin E (IgE), can cross the placenta and enter the foetus. When inside the foetus, the antibody binds to foetal mast cells, a type of immune cell that releases chemicals that trigger allergic reactions, from runny noses to asthma.
After birth, newborn mice develop allergic reactions to the same type of allergen as their mothers at the time of first exposure unlike adult mice, which require two exposures. Studies in the laboratory also showed that maternal IgE can bind to human foetal mast cells, indicating they might cross the placenta in humans in a similar way.
Dr Florent Ginhoux, senior principal investigator at A*STAR's Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) and a senior co-author of the study, said: There is currently a significant lack of knowledge on mast cells that are present early on in the developing foetus. Here, we discovered that foetal mast cells phenotypically mature through the course of pregnancy, and can be sensitised by IgE of maternal origin that cross the placental barrier. The study suggests that a highly allergic pregnant mother may potentially transfer her IgE to her baby that consequently develop allergic reactions when exposed to the first time to the allergen.
Allergies begin very early in life, said Associate Professor Ashley St John, an immunologist at Duke-NUS' Emerging Infectious Diseases Programme and a senior co-author of the study. Infants experience allergic responses closely linked with the mother's allergic response in ways that cannot only be explained by genetics. This work emphasises one way that allergic responses can pass from the mother to the developing foetus, and shows how allergies can then persist after birth.
As part of the study, following NACLAR guidelines, researchers exposed mice to ragweed pollen, a common allergen, prior to pregnancy. Mice that developed a sensitivity to the pollen had offspring that also showed an allergic reaction to ragweed. The sensitivity is allergen-specific; the offspring did not react to dust mites, another common allergen.
Notably, the transfer of sensitivity appears to fade with time. The newborn mice had allergic reactions when tested at four weeks, but less or none at six weeks.
The experimental studies were backed up with cellular tests and imaging, which showed maternal IgE bound to foetal mast cells, triggering the mast cells to release chemicals in reaction to an allergen, a process called degranulation.
This study further showed that the IgE transfer across the placenta requires the help of another protein, FcRN. Mice with FcRN knocked out lacked maternal IgE attached to their mast cells, and did not develop allergies after birth.
The study findings potentially open new intervention strategies to limit such transfer to minimise the occurrence of neonatal allergies. Currently, between 10 to 30 per cent of the world's population are affected by allergies. This number is set to continue rising and a solution preventing allergies being passed from mother to child could potentially bring those numbers down over time.
Our research has really exciting findings that may explain the high incidence of early onset atopic dermatitis (eczema) in children of mothers with clinically proven eczema, which parallel findings in our local birth cohort findings, said Professor Jerry Chan, senior consultant, Department of Reproductive Medicine at KKH, senior National Medical Research Council clinician scientist, and vice-chair of research with the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Academic Clinical Programme at the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre. From a clinical point of view, developing a further understanding in placental transfer of IgE, and the mechanism of foetal mast cell activation would be key to developing strategies to reduce the chance of eczema or other allergies from being transferred from mother to baby.
The authors next aim to better understand the mechanism of IgE transfer through the placenta, how IgE binding to mast cells in foetal skin modulate their functions and how it could affect skin physiology after birth.

Adelle: I hated my body, it reminded me of my rape ordeal – Nairobi News

Ex-Kiss FM presenter Adelle Onyango. PHOTO | COURTESY
Former Kiss fm radio presenter Adelle Onyango has revealed how she hated her body for years after she was raped.
In an Instagram post, Adelle, who was in a bikini, said she hated her body because it reminded her of her scars and her rape ordeal.
In 2008, Adelle was raped by a stranger while she was leaving a house party to hit a club in Westlands.
I am so proud of the intentional work Ive done to get to a point of loving my body. For many years I hated it. I dont know, I think at the time parts of it reminded me of getting rapedthe scars. Then came eczema with its own scars as if to mock me, she wrote.
Adelle further indicated that since the rape ordeal and the eczema, a swimming suit became a no for her for years.
Getting into a swimsuit was justa no-no! Which sucked because Ive been a swimmer all my life and I loved it! So I hid it tights, long sleeves, double sleeves, dont swim, the works! I hardly looked at it. Didnt give it the healthy things it needed. For years.yikes!
Over the years however, she disclosed, she had learnt to love her body even though it has been a long journey of healing and acceptance.
But right now I respect and honor the divinity in this body. Its carried me through battlefields and continues to do so to date. Heres to intentional healing. Its hard. It takes time. Im not all the way there. But it really is the gateway to freedom! she concluded.

Fact check: There is no evidence to support claims that Lady Gaga is a witch – USA TODAY
Posted: at 9:02 pm
While Lady Gaga and John Legend campaigned for the Biden-Harris ticket in Pennsylvania, rapper Lil Pump joined President Trump in Michigan. USA TODAY
On the eve of the 2020 election several artists took the Biden-Harris campaign stage in a final plea for support from their fan bases. The next morning adversaries rekindledold, QAnon-adjacent conspiracy theories to discredit Lady Gaga's political outcry. The common theme: Gaga is a witch.
More: Fact check: Pennsylvania voters exposed to COVID-19 can still vote
One Facebook user called Gaga a high ranking witch in the music industry, referencing her relationship with Serbian performance artist Marina Abramovic.
The same post highlighted the slogan Battle for the soul of the nation as evidence that Gaga was involved in something sinister. The Biden-Harris claim has been using that slogansince August. The slogan is not specific to Gaga, who only joined in campaign efforts on Nov. 2, andcannot prove that the star is a involved with satanism.

These demonic spirits of witchcraft, sexual perversion, and child sacrifice are seducing too many Christians at an alarming rate, Jeremiah Johnson Ministries posted on Facebook about Biden and Gaga on Nov. 3. Thatpost was later deleted.
USA TODAY reached out to both posters for comments and has not received a response.
Abramovic has been the subjectof conspiracy theories surrounding witchcraft dating back to PizzaGate in October 2016. When Hillary Clintons campaign chairman John Podestas emails were released on WikiLeaks, an email between Abramovic and Podestas brother Tony Podesta sparked speculation.

I am so looking forward to the Spirit Cooking dinner at my place. Do you think you will be able to let me know if your brother is joining? Abramovic wrote in the email.
Proponents of the conspiracy theory argued the email was evidence that she and the Clinton campaign we involved in witchcraft and satanism.
Abramovic later said Spirit Cooking referred to a dinner she hosted for a group of benefactors to her art institute.
More: Fact check: False claim linking Paul Pelosi Jr., Hunter Biden and Burisma
The dinner shared the name with a 1996 book and 1997 performance piece shed previously worked on. The Museum of Modern Art described the cookbook as a series of 'aphrodisiac recipes'that serve as evocative instructions for actions or thoughts.
Abramovics performance involved her painting strange recipes in blood on a gallerys walls. We had lots of fun, she told the New York Times about the dinner. There was no human blood, or baby serving, or sex orgies.

I really want to ask these people, Can you stop with this? Can you stop harassing me? Cant you see that this is just the art Ive been doing for 50 years of my life? Abramovic said of the conspiracy theories that have caused to her and her coworkers to receive death threats.
Lady Gaga became entangled in the conspiracy theory when social media users began sharing a photo of the singer with Abramovic and a body-painted model. Several posts falsely claimed the model was Ryan Singleton, an aspiring model whose body was found in Baker, California, on Sept. 21, 2013. Posters arguedGaga and Abramovic were involved in an illegal satanic spirit cooking hunt and party just days after Singleton went missing.
A July fact-check by Reuters found that the photo was taken at a July 2013 art show and the model involved was not Singleton. Trina Merry, the body paint artist featured in the show, dispelledthe claimmultiple times on Twitter.
Other social media users shared photos of Gaga atthe event, claiming she was involved in a "sickening" ritual pertaining to "Satanic Democrat Pedophile Cannibals."
The photo featured Gaga and Abramovic eating something off what looked like a bloody body. Lead Stories reported in May that the two "good friends" were not drinking blood, butengagingin performance art.

Despite these efforts by fact-checkers and artists to debunk these claims, some continue to argue Gaga is a witch. USA TODAY could find no evidence to support that theory.
Neither Abramovic nor Gagas representation has responded to USA TODAYs emails.

We rate the claim that Lady Gagais involved in witchcraft or satanism FALSE because it is not supported by our research. Claims that Gaga is a witch stem from misrepresentations ofa 2013 art event and her relationship with performance artist Marina Abramovic, whose own false accusations of witchcraft tie back to the PizzaGate conspiracy theory. The resurgence of this claim comes directly after Gaga expressed support for the Biden-Harris campaign.

BERNSTEIN: We live in two different Americas – RU Daily Targum
Posted: at 9:02 pm
As I write this piece, the United States has still not declared a victor for the 2020 presidential election. By the time this piece is published, a winner will likely have been declared, legal struggles and recounts could delay a definitive verdict for months.
Likewise, the painfully close nature of this race, close both for Democrats assured of a former Vice President Joe Biden landslide and President Donald J. Trump supporters who anticipated a sweeping victory, means that those hoping to come away from the election with a clear picture of the character and values of America will be left with more questions than answers.
But perhaps therein lies the point. To call America a divided country in modern times would be an understatement: Across both state and party lines, Americans are living under significantly different systems of law, subscribing to radically different accounts of reality and engaging in exceedingly varied walks of life.
Consider, for example, the referendum passed in Oregon this week to decriminalize illegal drugs, in addition to the legalization (with restrictions) of psilocybin, a psychedelic substance commonly referred to as "magic mushrooms."
We now live in a country where an individual can face criminal charges for marijuana possession in many states, while incurring no criminal penalty for the possession of heroin in at least one. Of course, the legality of drug use is only one out of many examples where the law differs across state lines: Gun control, public education standards and the death penalty figure among other conspicuous examples.
While the right to an abortion is federally legal under Roe v. Wade, access to abortion clinics varies across the country. Furthermore, should Roe v. Wade be overturned by the current Supreme Court, a concern for Democrats now that conservative justices hold a 6-3 majority, the bodily rights of women will become even more disparate across state lines.
Even if we ignore the heterogeneity of state governments, terms such as "American life" and "American culture" prove especially slippery and difficult to define. How many similarities can we really draw between the lives of rural Americans and the lives of city-dwellers?
And among these similarities, how many of them can we call universally American as opposed to universally human? The socio-economic realities facing American citizens quite regularly vary from neighborhood to neighborhood, let alone state to state.
A still more intractable question presents itself when we investigate the differences between the worldviews of Americans with differing political opinions. We no longer argue only over what is right, but also over what is real. The widespread availability of information in the digital age has ensured the widespread availability of misinformation as well.
How can we talk of universal American ideals when we cannot even agree, at a basic level, on what is happening in America? When an online conspiracy theory such as QAnon, which accuses Democratic "elites" of "Satanism" (among other, even more untoward charges) has achieved enough mainstream success that those who support it have won congressional seats this year?
No, none of this disparity is necessarily new in the United States, nor is it necessarily a bad thing on principle that Americans are not tied together by a unifying experience. The problem arises when we ignore the inherent lack of unity in our country. It arises when we talk broadly about "national" issues in a country as large and heterogeneous as America, and then we wonder why nobody can agree on these issues.
But above all else, the problem arises due to our clumsiness in adapting to the digital age. Social media harbors the potential to meaningfully connect people who would never cross paths in a world without modern technology. But so far it has spread more ill-will between strangers than amity. In an ideal society, online news sources could beget a political renaissance of well-informed citizens and easier, quicker access to the going-ons of the world.
But in practice, skepticism of the news has flourished in the digital age like never before, and a greater emphasis on national politics, at the expense of local news sources, threatens to alienate readers, who rarely see a straight line between the content of headlines and the struggles of their daily life.
Although I admire my country and the political philosophy upon which it was founded, a deep problem presents itself in the way we structure our national identity, a problem that will continue to fester if left untreated.
The soul of the United States is not singular. If we want our nation to thrive, we need to start having multifaceted conversations instead of one-dimensional arguments. We need to address a larger scope of issues in politics than the few, somewhat arbitrary ones we find ourselves incessantly revisiting.
We need to look toward a political system that accounts for a great diversity of thought instead of a system that tries to express the vast complexity of American experience in a binary fashion. The sooner we accept these realities, the sooner we can move beyond these last four years of division, confusion and anger.

These are the 5 most valuable skills to learn right now, says futuristand where to find free online courses – CNBC
Posted: at 9:02 pm
With rising geopolitical concerns, record unemployment and technology advancing faster than ever, it has never been more crucial for working professionals to stay ahead of the curve.
As a futurist who has helped more than 1,000 organizations adapt to change and uncertainty, I've found that, while hard skills remain important, there are five forward-thinking and often ignored soft skills that are crucial for staying relevant and equipped for a rapidly changing workforce.
Here are the skills to master before 2021, along with free online courses that can help you build upon them:
Futurist thinking is the ability to predict events and trends, and how they might impact your industry and professional development.
While this is a skill that remarkably few people have developed, it's important to note that futuristic thinking doesn't require a Ph.D. At the very least, it's about staying abreast of potential changes and thinking outside the box.
Recommended free course: Ready, Set, Future! Introduction to Futures Thinking,Highlights: Build your understanding of what futurist thinking is, how to collect and analyze signals of change, and identify historical shifts in the past to predict new changes in the future.
(Another course I highly recommend is The Future After Covid, which has received great reviews. Please note that it does charge a $495 fee.)
Even if you're not in a managerial role, developing leadership skills has never been more important. In fact, studies show that those with such skills are more likely to get a raise, promoted, or selected to take on additional responsibilities.
It's important to note that leadership isn't just about managing a team. It's also about having the courage to do things like:

Scientists Say They’ve Found the Missing 40 Percent of the Universe’s Matter – Futurism

Gotcha!
Scientists have long assumed that about 40 percent of the universes visible matter the kind makes up everything we can see and touch was missing, never having been detected.
Now, a team of researchers from Frances National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS) says its finally found it hidden away in the diffuse filaments ofthe gigantic, galaxy-connecting cosmic web. The research, published Friday in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, revealed the missing matter after scientists took a new look at a pile of 20-year-old data.
The filaments of gas that make upthe cosmic web are thought to connect networks of galaxies across vast voids of nothingness in the universe, according to a CNRS press release. Sometimes they also serve as a source of fresh material for nearby galaxies or black holes, making the web itself even more threadbare and faint.
The French researchers suggest that its because these cosmic web filaments are so diffuse, and the signals they give off are so weak, that they went undetected for 20 years even though all the data was in plain sight.
To find the 40 percent of all the visible matter in the universe that they contain, the CNRS researchers took a look at the filaments x-ray emissions coupled with information on 15,000 filaments physical arrangement.
Through that x-ray analysis, the team was able to confirm that the filaments contained vast amounts of previously-overlooked hot gases a huge fraction of the universes matter hiding in plain sight.

New Evidence: There Was Another Planet in the Solar System That Escaped – Futurism
Posted: at 9:02 pm
According to team of scientists at the Carnegie Institution for Science, an additional planet located between Saturn and Uranus got flung out of the solar system while it was still in its infancy.
The theory goes that the Sun was once surrounded by a disk of gas and dust. Through countless collisions, planets started to form, orbiting our star at a relatively short distance.
The more massive planets then kicked off a series of gravitational interactions, causing the planets to reshuffle into their current arrangement.
To get a clearer picture of what that arrangement looked like before these interactions, the team conducted some 6,000 computer simulations.
We now know that there are thousands of planetary systems in our Milky Way galaxy alone, Carnegie postdoctoral fellow Matt Clement, lead author of a paper about the simulations published in the journal Icarus, said. But it turns out that the arrangement of planets in our own Solar System is highly unusual, so we are using models to reverse engineer and replicate its formative processes.
This is a bit like trying to figure out what happened in a car crash after the fact how fast were the cars going, in what directions, and so on, he added.
They found that the final arrangement of Uranus and Neptune, two icy planets furthest away from the Sun, was determined by both the mass of the Kuiper belt, a region of dwarf planets and planetoids in the far reaches of the solar system, and an ejected ice giant that was kicked out when the planetary system was still young.
This indicates that while our Solar System is a bit of an oddball, it wasnt always the case, Clement explained. Whats more, now that weve established the effectiveness of this model, we can use it to help us look at the formation of the terrestrial planets, including our own, and to perhaps inform our ability to look for similar systems elsewhere that could have the potential to host life.

Scientists Found a Way to Make Infrared Light Visible to Humans – Futurism

Color Vision
A team of engineers built a system that lets people to see colors in the infrared spectrum as long as theyre looking through a camera lens.
We can see light with wavelengths within the visible spectrum, a fairly narrow band of colors that falls between ultraviolet and infrared light. But researchers from Tel Aviv University built a system that, mounted on a camera, make the colors of infrared light visible to us, according to research published in the journal Laser & Photonics Reviews. It makes a normally-expensive scientific tool more accessible to the point it could be used for photography or citizen science.
The team says that the device can be used to image gases like hydrogen, carbon, and sodium each of which can glow brightly in infrared. It can also image scenes in nature, which tend to look otherworldly under infrared light.
[Visible light is] only a tiny part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which also includes radio waves, microwaves, X-rays and more, Tel Aviv physicist Michael Mrejen said in a press release. In each of these parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, there is a great deal of information on materials encoded as colors that has until now been hidden from view.
Aside from photography and science, the scientists suggest a few slightly more consequential uses for their low-cost infrared tech.
So an environmental monitoring satellite could see a pollutant being emitted from a plant, coauthor Haim Suchowski said in the release, or a spy satellite would see where explosives or uranium are being hidden.
