New Research Uncovers Why Bats Excel As Viral Reservoirs Without Getting Sick – SciTechDaily
Posted: October 27, 2020 at 11:02 pm

Study confirms bats adopt multiple strategies to reduce pro-inflammatory responses, thus mitigating potential immune-mediated tissue damage and disease. Findings provide important insights for medical research on human diseases.
Bats act as reservoirs of numerous zoonotic viruses, including SARS-CoV, MERS CoV, Ebola virus, andmost likelySARS-CoV-2, the pathogen behind the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, the molecular mechanisms bats deploy to tolerate pathogenic viruses has remained unclear.
Now scientists from Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore, have discovered novel molecular mechanisms that allow bats to tolerate zoonotic viruses without getting sick. Published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the study suggests that bats adopt unique strategies to prevent overactive immune responses, which protects them against diseases caused by zoonotic viruses.
The team examined three bat speciesPteropus alecto (black fruit bat), Eonycteris spelaea (cave nectar bat), and Myotis davidii (Davids myotis bat)and identified mechanisms that balance the activity of key proteins that play a major role in mediating immunity and inflammatory responses in mammals. These mechanisms enable bats to harbour and transmit zoonotic pathogens without setting off the detrimental consequences of immune activation.
One of the mechanisms bats use is to reduce the levels of caspase-1, a protein that triggers a key inflammatory cytokine protein, interleukin-1 beta (IL-1). Another mechanism they employ hampers the maturation of interleukin-1 beta cytokines through a finely-tuned balancing between caspase-1 and IL-1.
Suppression of overactive inflammatory responses improves longevity and prevents age-related decline in humans. Our findings may offer potential insights to the development of new therapeutic strategies that can control and treat human infectious diseases, said Professor Wang Linfa, senior and corresponding author of the study from Duke-NUS Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) Programme.
This study exemplifies the world-class research led by our talented faculty to advance fundamental scientific knowledge. Professor Wangs research is all the more important in the context of COVID-19, by contributing to a greater understanding of how zoonotic diseases persist in nature, and potentially aiding new approaches to managing future outbreaks, said Professor Patrick Casey, Senior Vice-Dean for Research, Duke-NUS Medical School.

How to live longer: Best ingredients to add to your smoothie to boost longevity – Express
Posted: at 11:02 pm
To live a long and healthy life, ensuring your diet is as natural as possible is key. Preparing meals and drinks at home is one of the best ways to ensure this as you know exactly what you are consuming without any hidden and nasty ingredients. Smoothies have become extremely popular amongst the health conscious. According to science and health experts, what are the three best ingredients to add in your smoothie to help boost your longevity?
Polyphenolsprovide significantprotection againstthe development and progression of many chronic pathological conditions including cancer, diabetes, cardio-vascular problems and aging.
Polyphenol foods are known to help boost longevity and fruits with high levels of polyphenols include black elderberries, strawberries, red raspberries, blueberries, plums, andblackcurrants.
A recent published in theJournal of Nutritionfound that large amounts of polyphenols can also boost your longevity.
Researchers found that people who took in 650 mg per day experienced a 30 percent lower mortality rate than those who took in less than 500 mg per day.

Increasing your consumption of fruits and vegetables is the best way to bolster your daily intake of these health-promoting compounds, said Dr Charlie Seltzer, a Philadelphia-based physician who specializes in anti-aging treatments.
He continued: The outer layers of many fruits and vegetables contain the highest concentrations of polyphenols, so don't peel off the skin before you eat them.
Another way to get more polyphenols from fruit is to consume them before they ripen, because polyphenol activity lessens as fruit ages.
A study showed that freeze-drying fruit,as opposed to chilling it,preserves 80 percent of its antioxidants, including polyphenols.

Cruciferous vegetable are powerhouses when it comes to overall health.
With the unique ability to modify human hormones, activate the bodys natural detoxification system and inhibit the growth of cancerous cells.
Cruciferous vegetables should be chewed thoroughly or eaten shredded, chopped, juiced, or blended in order to release their potent anti-cancer properties.
The cruciferous phytochemical sulforaphane has also been found to protect the blood vessel wall from inflammatory signalling that can lead to heart disease.
Cruciferous vegetables are the most nutrient-dense of all the foods.
For a smoothie with health benefits to boost longevity, try adding either broccoli, kale or cabbage.
The nutritional profile of seeds is very similar to nuts in that they provide healthy fats, minerals, and antioxidants, however, seeds have more protein and are abundant in trace minerals.
Flax, chia, and hemp seeds are rich in omega-3 fats.
Flax, chia, and sesame seeds are also rich lignans, breast cancer-fighting phytoestrogens.
Sesame seeds are rich in calcium and vitamin E, and pumpkin seeds are especially rich in zinc.
For maximum nutritional benefits, try adding flax or chia seeds to your daily smoothie.
All our cells are filled with small energy generators called mitochondria - but when mitochondria become old, they become less-efficient, and even possibly toxic.
Old mitochondria are recycled by the cell into new mitochondria - and this, in turn, is mitophagy.
With age, this recycling progress slows down which can lead to muscle weakness.
Scientists have discovered pomegranates contain a substance called urolithin A.
The red rich fruit is known to be one of the healthiest for a reason. It is called as a divine fruit because it is the most mentioned fruit in theological books.
Pomegranate has antioxidant, anti-viral and anti-tumour properties and is said to be a good source of vitamins, especially vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E, as well as folic acid.

Gartner: 10 predictions for the next decade of IT – IDG Connect
Posted: at 11:02 pm
This is a contributed article by Daryll Plummer, Distinguished Research VP
The technologies we have today, have been stretched to their limits. But to enable the next rebound of innovation and efficiency, we need to look at non-traditional approaches the place where the next big thing is born. Knowing this is the road businesses need to take in 2021 and beyond, CIOs can expect the next decade to be dominated by radical technological innovation, changing their business models for good.
If the pandemic has taught us anything, its that the need for radical digitalisation must be a principle, not a project, ultimately forcing organisations to consider a different type of future.
As radical innovations are accelerated, in turn, traditional computing technologies are simultaneously being edged closer to hitting a digital wall, forcing the shift to new computing paradigms.
Gartner outlines 10 predictions for the reset of everything that will have a transformational impact on society and business, driving us towards these new paradigms.
Technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), computer vision, and speech recognition demand substantial computing power. As they become pervasive in the business environment, general-purpose processors will be increasingly unsuitable for these digital innovations.
Silicon processors are approaching performance, economic and sustainability limits, and they will become the bottleneck for technological innovation and thus business growth.
New computing technologies, like neuromorphic computing a computer that thinks and acts more like the human brain will begin to take their place. As these new technologies mature, and follow the lead of quantum computing, they will become increasingly available and more affordable for businesses to begin experimentation. This space will become especially exciting as large vendors begin to roll out reliable as-a-service solutions in the marketplace.
By 2024, 30% of digital businesses will mandate DNA storage trials, addressing the exponential growth of data poised to overwhelm existing storage technology.
More information is being collected than ever before, but todays storage technology has critical limitations on how long data can be stored and remain uncorrupted. Currently 30 years is the limit.
DNA on the other hand is inherently resilient, capable of error checking and initiating self-repair, which makes it an ideal data storage and computing platform for a range of applications. DNA storage enables the storage of binary digital data in the double helix. It would mean a years worth of human knowledge could be stored in a gram of synthetic DNA for thousands of years. In fact, all of human knowledge could be stored in a small amount of synthetic DNA.
It sounds complex, but the technology is well-established and understood. Once adopted by businesses this will provide a longevity that traditional storage mechanisms simply cannot compete with.
By 2025, 40% of physical experience-based businesses will improve financial results and outperform competitors by extending into paid virtual experiences.
As the immersive sensory technologies evolve, their applications are getting more affordable, seamless, and understood by the general public. Businesses that provide physical experiences, like rock climbing or white-water rafting, must extend into offering paid virtual reality experiences that rival the physical ones through the use of digital twins.
At the same time, COVID-19 has transformed attitudes about physical versus virtual and changed the discussion about what people can do without physically being present or putting their safety at risk.
Examples are endless, for consumers, a virtual bike ride alongside Tour de France riders during the competition from home will be an experience fans would pay a premium for. For businesses, using AR to preview robot programming from the office in real-time will redefine the factory of the future. For Gartner, going virtual for this years IT Symposium/Xpo has shown us the big opportunity to deliver hybrid AR-integrated events in the near future to leverage the best of both worlds.
By 2025, customers will be the first humans to touch more than 20% of the products and produce in the world.
New technologies are automating an increasing number of human tasks, a trend that has been hyper-accelerated by the pandemic. This is leading to new opportunities to rethink product design, material use, plant locations and use of resources.
Customers will increasingly become the first humans to touch manufactured products and agricultural produce. Automated machines in factories and farms will do most of the work, including farming, picking, packing and shipping.
Automation, much like during the industrial revolution, will be a new source of competitive advantage and disruption. For example, an intelligent machine may not squish grapes in the same way a human packing them might. CIOs should see hyper-automation as a way to change the way the business operates, not just improve the efficiency of standalone tasks.
By 2024, 25% of traditional large-organisations CIOs will be held accountable for digital business operational results, effectively becoming COO by proxy.
A large percentage of end-user businesses dont have a COO, a vital role in digital acceleration. This is someone who understands the business and ecosystem and how to implement technology for greater impact.
As a COO by proxy, the CIO will take on the organisation-wide role and begin to close the gaps between what the technology can do, what the business can do, and what the business wants to do. As they close these gaps, they can create business value and selectively createcomposability in the business.
By 2025, 75% of conversations at work will be recorded and analysed, enabling the discovery of added organisational value or risk.
Every piece of technology, from smart speakers to virtual meetings to messaging platforms, now actively records conversations or has the ability to do so embedded in to it. Organisations need to begin to think about how to collect that data, how to analyse it, and how to use it to improve the employee and customer experiences.
For example, it might be possible to measure and work on improving overall employee satisfaction by using AI to analyse line manager meetings. However, all this data collection comes at a risk. Any organisation attempting this should create a board of ethics to ensure that the data is used responsibly, peoples privacyis respected, and an opt-out option is clearly communicated.
By 2025, customers will pay a freelance customer service expert to resolve 75% of their customer service issues.
Everyone has experienced the frustration of a bad customer service setup, and many turn to outside help like web forums, online tutorials, and social media to navigate tricky situations. Gartner predicts that through 2021, there will be a 15% rise in customers seeking outside help after being frustrated by traditional support channels.
The good news is that this means organisations will have reduced costs in certain customer service areas. The bad news is that more instances of outside help removes an important company-consumer touchpoint.
CIOs must look to partner with these freelancers early on to make sure they are trained and have what they need. Building the partnership instead of shunning it will reduce the customer experience, brand and monetisation risks created by third-party customer service providers.
By 2024, 30% of major organisations will use a new Voice of Society metric to act on societal issues and assess the impacts to their business performance.
The Voice of Society is the shared perspective of people in a community one that works toward acceptable outcomes for all by advocating for fair and equal representation and adherence to ethical values.
Organisations must consider how society affects the performance of the business, and they have a responsibility to reduce or eliminate tone-deafness or insensitivity to public concerns. Failure to do so is becoming increasingly damaging for businesses as more people turn to the internet to voice their concerns.
Sentiment analysts, media metrics figures and contributions to society measurements will matter in 2021, and opinion metrics are now as reliable as click-through analysis. Such measurement will become a C-Suite imperative so that business composition can react quickly to societal change.
By 2023, large organisations will increase employee retention by more than 20% through repurposing office space as on-site childcare and education facilities.
Worker demand for childcare is still an unmet need, and lockdown restrictions have pushed this trend over the edge. Gartner predicts that by early 2021, 20% of private childcare centres will have closed permanently, leaving a shortage of qualified providers.
Accessible on-site childcare can increase retention, employee engagement and productivity. Plus, not having to choose between childcare and a job may result in more women in leadership positions over the long term. Organisations with on-site childcare will attract more candidates. This is also an effective way to use empty office space as businesses move toward more remote workers.
By 2024, moderation services for user-generated content will be surveyed as a top CEO priority by 30% of large organisations.
With most social unrest spilling in to the virtual world, content volatility on social media has increased. Investing in content moderation, enforcement and reporting services will be critical for businesses to understand the providence of the content on their sites.
In many cases, brands and influencers are going dark altogether on user-generated content platforms until appropriate policing measures are in place. Yet site and app publishers must walk the line between enforcing policies to provide a safe environment and being accused of censorship. Therefore, brand advertisers will become responsible for neutralising polarising content using hybrid human-AI systems, especially as industry standards for content moderation will emerge.

"The first stage was be a functional human again, and open the door with the keys" – SportsJOE.ie
Posted: at 11:02 pm
The word went around about Cian Healy, back in 2007, that there was a young lad in the Leinster set-up that had pretty much lifted ALL the weights. He was bulling about his peers, in training, and his coaches felt he would get more out of sessions with the senior squad.
Healy was 19 when he made his senior Leinster debut and he added 13 more appearances the following season, 2007/08, before nailing down the No.1 jersey in 2009 as he helped his province to their first ever European Cup. There was talk of him being a possible bolter for the Lions Tour to South Africa but he missed out on that fun and had to wait until Australia came to Croke Park, later that year, to make his Test debut.
"The whole occasion," recalls Healy of his debut, "just class to be playing in Croker. There were so many big names in our team which kind of shocked me a bit. I was young and cocky and confident in myself, and I got a bit of slagging for it. But some of that confidence goes a long way.
"I remember Paulie [O'Connell] tapped me down a ball from a kick-off and that was my one outstanding memory of that game, I got a bit of a run off it."
He got a bit of a run in the Test XV too as, over the next five years, he started 46 of his 48 Test appearances, excelled at the 2011 World Cup, made the 2013 Lions squad and won his first Six Nations title in 2014.
2015 was the year where that run was brought to a jarring halt. He had already dealt with bad hamstring and ankle injuries, in the previous years, but he went in for neck surgery not long after the 2015 Six Nations. The Clontarf prop was left without the use of his right arm due to nerve damage and, he once recalled, his retirement and insurance papers were all signed and ready to send off before that year's World Cup.
He began to get feeling and sensation back in his arm, though, and he held off on ending his career at the age of 27. Now, days away from what will be his 100th Test appearance for Ireland, Healy spoke about his journey back from the brink.
"Eventually, it was broken down into so many stages. The first stage of that was be a functional human again and open the door with the keys, and stuff like that.
"Each time I became capable of something Id work on another new standard that I could work on, something else more achievable. Id build through them and keep progressing though those goals to get into the international team again. And then get to the standard of the international team. Then it was a constant drive for fitness and getting my standards up because rugby keeps moving on."
Asked what was the secret to his longevity, Healy was quick to pay credit to the team of people around him at his province, and support from those close to him.
"I've relied on a lot and rehab coaches and physios to bring me back from the brink," Cian Healy says. "They do it day in and day out for other players, and everyone requires these people at some stage to drag them back from injuries or tough places. So a lot of it stems from that.
"And a bit of a drive, personally. Im not that type of person to settle down too easily and roll over, so a bit of that as well."

IOTA Joins Project Funded by Japanese National R&D Agency NEDO to Build First-Ever AI and DLT-based Predictive Maintenance System – Business Wire
Posted: at 11:02 pm
BERLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IOTA Foundation, a non-profit foundation focused on distributed ledger technology (DLT) and open-source ecosystem development, announced today that it has partnered on a project initiated by Best Materia and IMC, Japanese maintenance related companies, and funded by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization), a national research and development agency. The goal of the project is to develop technology to strengthen the security, longevity, and durability of critical infrastructure assets in Japan and abroad.
By adding artificial intelligence and distributed ledger technology to Risk Based Maintenance (RBM) Systems deployed in power plants, energy plants, industrial plants, petrochemicals and oil refining plants, the group hopes to capture a large share of the domestic social infrastructure conservation market, valued at 170 Trillion Yen (1.5 Trillion USD). This type of predictive maintenance system that shares industry data using a distributed database is set to be the first of its kind in the world.
While damage prediction assessment based on the current RBM standards exists, most processes are still left up to field workers to do manually. To further optimize these systems, maintenance data will be digitized and processed by an artificial intelligence system to predict when and which parts in a plant are going to require maintenance. This will reduce unplanned outages, improve plant availability and lower costs by reducing unnecessary inspections and repairs.
Creating a decentralized, open source and free distributed ledger technology to ensure data integrity has always been our driving purpose. As a non-profit we are honored seeing the IOTA protocol being utilized to secure a wide variety of data points in this project. Digitalizing the risk based maintenance (RBM) systems for safer and more efficient industrial plants is only one of many applications where IOTA will be used in the future. - Holger Kther, Director of Partnerships, IOTA Foundation
Because of the aging problem in Japan, we seriously need the AI system supporting our business in place of retired RBM consultants. We expect that IOTA Tangle will enable us to securely collect and store RBM related data including sensitive plant information which is the key to the accuracy of the AI system. - Shigemitsu Kihara, Best Materia, CEO
The project will develop a cloud-based SaaS software with the following capabilities:

Why is there a need of Global Health Revolution – The Financial Express

The environment directly affects our health and plays a major role in our quality of life, longevity, and health disparities.
By Kunal Sood
When it comes to Global Health, there is no THEM, only US
GLOBAL HEALTH COUNCIL
Global health is an important phenomenon nowadays and an urgent social concern. A sick and ailing population across the globe has created geo-political instability and compromised our security. Mutating patterns of diseases that include the COVID-19 pandemic as well as other factors such as the lack of PPE in the field to protect our frontline global health practitioners have created tremendous challenges. We are in the midst of a global health crisis here and now. More than ever before do the fields of science, psychology, innovation and technology need to come together to create a better future for us.
Here are some of the most pressing global health issues we face today that we need to solve for with scientific and technological innovation:
Efficient and affordable access to effective healthcare: Good and affordable health services should be a human right and available within reasonable reach given the exponential innovation in the field of medicine to those who require them whenever necessary. It should be convenient, effective and affordable irrespective of ones age, caste, colour, creed, sex, race or religion. Apart from easy access, there should be a safe, evidence-based protocol when treating the likes of a global health crisis from such communicable diseases like the current pandemic and rarer diseases like chikungunya. Additionally With the overall increase of illness like cancer, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases worldwide, access to quality health care for all is essential in reducing health inequality and the road map in order to do this lies in using technological innovation and democratizing digital health for all
Environmental quality: The environment directly affects our health and plays a major role in our quality of life, longevity, and health disparities. Poor air quality is linked to premature death, cancer, and long-term damage to our respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Secondhand smoke containing toxic and carcinogenic chemicals that contributes to cardiovascular disease and lung cancer in non-smoking adults. Globally, nearly 25% of all deaths and the total disease burden can be attributed to poor environmental factors. Safe and clean air, land, and water are fundamental to a healthy community and a healthy environment. Smoke and pollution-free environment help prevent disease and even helps advanced medicine heal and cure other health problems. As an alternative today we have technologies such as HEPA and UV light air purifiers that can help control the high levels of air pollution and second-hand smoke to protect the ones we love and create a healthier environment by design
Mental health: Mental health problems have spiked given the recent lockdowns and although help is available we must deploy more resources and capital towards helping those that suffer. People with mental health problems can get better and many fully recover from depression and other forms of mental illness. Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act and often causes stress which is the underlying cause for many physical ailments as well. Our mental state often determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Over the course of your life, if you experience mental health problems, your mindset, mood, and behaviour could be affected negatively. Hence it is vital to pay attention to your mental health and use health-based apps such as headspace or calm on your smartphone to help inculcate the practice of mindfulness to regulate your emotional wellbeing. Yoga is also known to do wonders for the mind, body and soul connection so find time in your daily routine to integrate mediation and yoga into your way of life.
Substance abuse: Substance abuse can be very harmful to your health given the hazardous nature of certain substances if overdosed, including alcohol and illicit drugs. Psychoactive substance use can lead to addiction and eventually in some cases leads to isolation and even death. The solution lies in legislating effective policies which influence the consumption levels and patterns of substance use to minimize related harm can significantly reduce the public health problem. In addition health interventions that use technology to track and alert health care workers in time to intervene in cases where one may overdose can save a life. Such interventions with technology can also be used for rehab once the patient is stable with the right kind of medical supervision can recover and restore their overall wellbeing.
Tobacco: Over 80% of the worlds 1.3 billion tobacco users live in low- and middle-income countries. The tobacco epidemic is the second biggest public health threats the world has ever faced, killing more than 8 million people a year around the world. More than 7 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 1.2 million are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Again here we must be able to use conscious media and technology to help change behaviour and quit smoking. Furthermore, we must create awareness around protecting those that suffer around smokers due to second-hand smoke.
Obesity: Obesity has become the number one epidemic globally outpacing even tobacco and is defined as the abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk of our health in all forms. Obesity is one side of the double burden of malnutrition, and today more people are obese than underweight. It is associated with a higher risk for serious diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer and chronic lower back pain which affects ones overall quality of life.
It is critical that we as a nation and planet take stock of both our personal and communal healthcare systems and personal wellbeing. There has never been a better time for us to launch a Global Health Revolution. We can light the spark that ignites a movement that doesnt just save our planet but transforms humanity to usher in a new era of human prosperity and planetary flourishing. A place where technology truly serves all of the wonder and biodiversity that exists in our world. But most important make sure that every life counts and every human being matters.
