From boy band to men: A decade of One Directions musical evolution in 60 minutes – The A.V. Club

Posted: July 25, 2020 at 10:09 am

On July 23, 2010, there was a ripple across the pond. During production of the seventh series of the U.K.s The X Factor, five young ladsNiall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinsonfailed to make enough of an impression on the judges to advance to the next round as individuals. But in a savvy move, X-Factor judge and V-necked superproducer Simon Cowell pulled the five teenagers aside and gave them a second chancethey would continue on in the competition as a group under Cowells tutelage. The boys were elated and quickly united in their mission, unanimously agreeing over text (as the story goes) to be known as One Direction. When the series hit British airwaves, fans immediately took to the mop-haired teens, watching their real-life friendships blossom as they tore their way through the competition. On December 12, 2010, they finished third on The X-Factor; their consolation prize: A reported 2 million record deal with Cowells Syco Records.

A decade later, its hard to believe that the members of One Direction1D for shortwere once the underdogs. By the time they arrived in America for their first stateside tour, the buzz over pop musics next big thing was already deafeningsome even likened it to Beatlemania. While their refusal to dance meant they werent exactly following in the choreography-heavy footsteps of the boy bands before them, it only helped make them that much more appealing: They were the every-lads, just five young guys who wanted to make music and have a good time. Mischievous, but not dangerous. Charming and crush-worthy, but relatable. Their music and image was perfectly manufactured to lean into these qualities, the boys maintaining a sense of goofy realness even under all the glossfor a while there, it really did seem like they were having a blast. But the nonstop cycle of albums and globe-trotting took its toll, and during the groups fourth world tour in five years, it was announced that Zayn Malik would leave 1D in early 2015. Later that year, the group released Made In The A.M. (which some suggested stands for After Malik), shortly followed by the announcement of a hiatus starting in 2016. In the years since, Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry, and Louis have all released solo singles and albums, carving out space for themselves and defining their personal sounds in the shadow of One Direction.

If youre reading this, its safe to assume that youre either holding on to some affection for the former reigning boy band (without a doubt, BTS now claims that crown), or you cant believe were about to argue that they have enough worthwhile songs to fill out an hour-long playlist. Either way, welcome! Whether you love or loathe One Direction and their record-breaking career, venturing back through their discography provides a fascinating look at the evolution of a boy bandhow five young performers grew up within the contract-laden confines of the mainstream music machine, and how they found their voices while millions of Directioners (the moniker for self-described 1D stans) clung to their every word. From the starry-eyed teenage debut, Up All Night, to the (varyingly successful) string of solo adult albums, this Power Hour distills a decade of One Direction down to the tracks that highlight their growth as a quintet, eventually a quartet, and then as individuals. These are the enduring songs that define their legacy and prove that, once these five set their sights on music stardom, the only direction they could go was up.

There are more than a few similarities between One Thing and One Directions inescapable breakout hit What Makes You Beautiful, both from the debut album Up All Night: Both are driven by a clap-heavy beat and a buoyant guitar riff, and both have a chorus that begs to be shouted by adoring fans. Aside from giving all of the members their moment to shine vocally, One Thing ultimately stands out as the groups definitive early single because of its intriguing ambiguity. What is that one thing, anyway? Like Meatloafs Id Do Anything For Love (But I Wont Do That), the lyrics keep things vague, allowing the listener to imagine theyre the one One Direction cant get out of their heads.

After the runaway success of the groups debut, One Direction turned it all the way up for album two: Take Me Home is a proper charm offensive with the goal of world domination. Its third single Kiss You leans hard into their goofball personas, a gonzo love song that promises to, show you off to all of my friends, making them drool down their chinny-chin-chins. Childish? Maybe so, but the song relishes in its youthful energy. By the time it reaches the na na nas of its final bridge, youre putty in the hands of one of 1Ds catchiest tunes. Frenetic yet perfectly polished, Kiss You is a sugar rush from start to finish.

When laying out the groundwork for Take Me Home, Simon Cowell reportedly challenged industry hit-makers to submit potential No. 1s, effectively tasking top songwriters to compete for their slot on One Directions sophomore album. This go-big-or-go-home approach meant that the record was a near-exhausting barrage of bumping back-beats and radio-ready hooks. Still, Cmon, Cmon stands outits One Direction at the groups most celebratory and joyful. Indicative of the albums more electronic sound, the song emphasizes its drum-machine wallops and New Wave synths to irresistible effect, and then drops them out for a split-second before launching into a soaring chorus. Its all over in less than three minutes, but Cmon, Cmon is the kind of song that buzzes in your head for much longer.

Now certified global pop stars with a splashy tour documentary under their belts, the members of One Direction were out to prove that they could adapt to a more mature milieu for 2013s Midnight Memories. With artists like Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers giving the years adult contemporary charts a folksier makeover, a number of the albums cuts followed suit. Midnight Memories most successful foray into folk-rock, Through The Dark, doesnt shy away from its influences; following Little Lion Mans formula, it kicks off with a lone acoustic guitar, gradually building to a rollicking chorus built for boot-stomping (its pop sheen also means it holds up better than a lot of that eras hits, which already sound like relics). The song had its broadcast debut on a Paul Rudd-hosted episode of SNL wheredespite some visible discomfortthe quintet showcased their knack for harmonies, proving to the shows late-night audience there was talent behind all the hype.

Along with the groups new, grown-up sound, Midnight Memories found One Direction ditching the playful innuendos for (slightly) more overt pillow talk. Near the albums midpoint, on Happily, Payne sings, Its four A.M. and I know that youre with him; I wonder if he knows that I touched your skin. Its not quite scandalous, but the guys music had to go past puppy love if they wanted to be taken seriously as artists. Elsewhere, the refrain exclaims, I dont care what people say when were together, painting the picture of a forbidden romance, giving the bands young queer fans (of which there were many) enough wiggle room to find themselves in its narrative. With its clap-and-shout catharsis, Happily might be the closest thing 1D has to a queer anthem.

While some cited One Directions fourth album Four as evidence the group was losing a bit of its luster (the unimaginative title only highlighting this inevitability), in retrospect, it also produced some of their most potent and thoughtfully constructed tracks. Fireproof, for example, channels breezy 80s Fleetwood Mac for a tambourine-fueled testament to a love built to last. That a guitar riff takes the spotlight for its second bridge instead of another round of na na nas showcases a wizened restraintthat the group had grown beyond the need for another radio-ready sing-along. Noted Directioner Mitski (who once tweeted, disrespect 1D, disrespect me) also gave the song her stamp of approval with a killer, fuzzed-out cover, showing that even indie rockers couldnt resist the charms of One Direction.

Boy band music videos have traditionally served up big concepts and even bigger budgets, but One Directions date-night clip for Night Changes displays simple brilliance. With the videos handheld point-of-view cinematography, viewers are given the opportunity to spend a special moment with each band membera wine-and-dine with Zayn, ice-skating with Harry, cozy board games by the fire with Nialluntil they all go a bit off the rails. Indulgent, earnest, and goofy, it endures as 1Ds definitive video. Musically, Night Changes creates a similar romantic atmosphere, employing ooh ooh backing vocals and a heartbeat bass drum to woo listeners into its mid-tempo easy-listening before sealing the deal with an irresistible key change.

With its insinuation that falling in love can feel a bit like its titular psychological condition, Stockholm Syndrome has some questionable sexual politics. Nevertheless, the song is an absolute pop banger, putting some arena-ready oomph behind another classic One Direction hook. Like many of the groups later tracks, Stockholm Syndrome wears its influences on its sleeve, recalling The Polices post-punk energy with its bouncing guitar riff that swells to match the whoas! of its chorus. It should come as no surprise that the song became one of the rare 1D covers Harry Styles would trot out on his first solo world tourit highlights both his lower-register timbre and his powerful belt, planting the seeds for the rock star to come.

Throughout its tenure, One Direction endured many comparisons to The Beatles, largely in terms of the groups status as an inescapable global phenomenon. But if there was ever a track that sounded like kin to a Sgt. Peppers diddy, its the vibrant, utterly sunny Olivia. Co-written by Styles, the exuberant love song is a time machine unto itself and a joyful standout among the bands winding discography. Backed by a full orchestra, the track is an indulgent celebration of all-consuming devotion. With the power of hindsight, it would be fair to also view it as foreshadowing for what could be expected from Styles then-forthcoming solo effort: something vintage and infectious.

The bands announcement of an impending extended hiatus was met with global devastation from long-time devotees, but not that much shock. Even before Maliks abrupt departure in March 2015, the young men had been ruminating on their inevitable transition into solo work since the year prior. History was more than a folksy, guitar-driven culmination of years of hard work; it was also a fitting sign-off. Equipped with a rousing hook, the final single from the then-quartet rang like a cozy bars last-call anthem and a loving farewell to the bands historic era.

Malik explained his exit from one of the biggest modern musical acts in pop culture as an opportunity to show off his more authentic self, a way to make the music that he actually stood behind. As the first 1D member to build up his solo persona, his Mind Of Mine may have caused some understandable whiplash for those familiar with the music he was making just a year prior. Leaving the palatable, family-friendly rock-pop archetype behind and leaning more into hazy R&B and sensual soft funk, BoRdErZ bared no hints of Maliks glossy boy band roots and became one of the stronger songs among the bunch. It was also one of eight collaborations with Grammy-winning songwriter-producer Malay, and a promising look at Zayns growth as an artist (groan-inducing stylization of track titles aside).

Not every One Directioner has managed to comfortably find a distinctive sound beyond their boy band roots. Since the bands break, Louis Tomlinson has released a handful of singles and, as of this year, a debut album with Walls, although none of it has really resonated on the same scale as his former bandmates. But in 2016, Tomlinson teamed with super DJ Steve Aoki for his first official solo venture. Just Hold On was everything a listener would need from an EDM-pop jaunt: catchy, uplifting, and a solid addition to any festival lineup. It was also a sound that Tomlinson never fully revisited, later opting for the more rock-driven soundscape that underscored the majority of 1Ds discography. Now the track largely exists as a memento of a fairly untrodden path toward house and dance stardom that very well could have set him apart from the rest of his former bandmates.

Of the five original 1D members, Styles, unsurprisingly, has managed to cultivate the biggest solo career. With his boisterous style and generation-defying sound, critics often cite classic rock tentpoles like Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney in their praises. Carolina crystallized Styles appreciation of 60s and 70s rock in a rollicking ode to a girl he met once. Upbeat and reverent, the song became a tour favorite and a late-blooming summer jam. Years later, it endures as a testament to Styles determination to make music that could fit in any decade and possibly outlast us all.

Easily the star of Styles debut, Kiwi is nothing but fun, unabashed rock. The opening verseShe worked her way through a cheap pack of cigarettes / Hard liquor mixed with a bit of intellect / And all the boys, they were saying they were into it / Such a pretty face, on a pretty neckworked hard to cement a much older point of view for 1Ds breakout star. Its energetic spirit also signaled a budding soloist who was willing to exist outside of a single box, setting him apart from his former bandmates as one of the strongest songwriters in the group.

Chalk it up to his ever-present grin, but Niall Horan certainly earned a reputation as the cheekiest of One Directions merry pranksters, which made his folksy, assured solo debut that much more surprising. Flicker had one hell of a saucy single in Slow Hands, but its Seeing Blinda swooning duet with country superstar Maren Morristhat best carved out a niche for Horan in a post-One Direction world. His reedier voice trades off with Morris full-bodied twang in the verses before the two combine for a gorgeous harmony in the songs sweeping refrain. Seeing Blind is a honest-to-goodness country love song with crossover appeal that, like Tomlinsons EDM dabbling, proves the guys didnt need to stay in their former bands pop-rock lane to succeed.

With Icarus Falls, Malik offered a lengthy, 27-track followup to Mind Of Mine that truly highlighted his solo potential. It didnt quite garner the same commercial success as his debut, but it did carve a viable path forward for a growing alt-R&B artist. Its a shame that we never saw a more robust celebration of Maliks second album outside of its more favorable critical reception: Icarus Falls provided more than its fair share of both genre-bending entries and straightforward grooves like Imprint. Sleek and laid-back, the easy tune was a nice bridge between the two projects, changing the pace of the album and solidifying his signature sound.

There are a few genres at work in Fine Lines second single, the ever-charming Adore You. Rock, pop, disco, and funk have ways of registering a little differently with each listen, but all are bolstered by a thumping baseline and Styles soulful vocals in a true go-for-broke love jam. Though the subject of an elaborate (and rather brilliant) viral marketing campaign, Adore You absolutely sells Styles abilities as a wide-ranging artist on its own merit, employing lush background harmonies and an alluring energy that makes it difficult not to fall for his inherent charm. Of all the mellifluous things to come out of One Directions break, this track is by far one of the best.

If 1D were still around to grow the bands collective sound, its current music would likely be comparable to Horans Heartbreak Weatherthat is, breezy, guitar-heavy, and pleasantly melodic. Its snappy (figuratively and quite literally) bridge is so reminiscent of a One Direction hit that it sounds like a Made In The A.M. bonus track in the best way. Out of everyone, Horan held tightly to the playful spirit that catapulted the band into superstardom while injecting his own innate folksy musicality, crafting an ethos that is still very much his own. Heartbreak Weathers title track was not only an ideal opening track for casual listeners, but a security blanket of sorts for fans who still miss the spirited group that started it all.

Since were just shy of 60 minutes, theres time to wrap up this Power Hour with One Directions most meme-able moment to date. When Act My Age was released as an extra track on the Ultimate Edition of 2014s Four, it felt like something of a lark: The band sings about getting fat and old over what is, essentially, an Irish jig on adrenaline. According to Knowyourmeme.com, Twitter user @hozierlesbianin a stroke of geniusspliced the songs raucous strings over video of a familys impressive synchronized dance to Freco and Merlos Drop. Then, in early 2019, the edit fell into the right hands on Twitter, and a brand new reaction meme was born. Those unfamiliar with the One Direction deep cut were mystified by the clips pirate music, but longtime Directioners clocked the song immediately. The surprising viral moment for Act My Age may have spiked over a year ago, but it speaks to the fact that the earnest, irresistible spirit of One Directions music lives on, even if the bands in no hurry to come back from hiatus any time soon.

Leading the evolution of the cyber insurance market for SMEs – Business Leader

Posted: at 10:09 am

Freddie Knight

Business Leader recently spoke to Freddy Knight the Innovation Director for one of the UKs leading cyber insurance providers, Optimum Speciality Risks (OSR) to discuss how his innovative company is disrupting the industry, and helping businesses prepare themselves against future risks.

Can you tell us about OSR?

OSR was founded in 2018 and rebranded and relaunched in 2019, following my arrival as Innovation Director to launch our SME product, Optimum Cyber Plus.

Optimum Cyber Plus is a unique insurance offering and was created to help make the premium cyber insurance and cybersecurity solutions bought by large, corporate organisations accessible to local insurance brokers and their SME clients.

Until its release in 2019, small business owners in the UK had to choose between two realities; Pay hefty premiums for comprehensive cyber insurance solutions that, in most cases, were totally out of proportion to the rest of their insurance/risk management spend, or pay a more reasonable premium for a budget solution which, in the majority of cases, were lacking in appropriate coverage, response services and risk management capabilities.

Our policies start at 75 and provide a combined, partner led insurance and risk management package worth in excess of 3,000.

All of our policyholders are provided access to a suite of complimentary risk management aides, including a one-hour consultation with one of the UKs leading GDPR consultancy practices, GDPR123; online employee awareness training modules covering cyber-crime, data protection and cyber security; a free vulnerability scan from KryptoKloud and two days free consultancy to resolve any issues highlighted; access to a Cyber Essentials Certification and Management from Berea (Cyber AMI); and ten licences for Firewall and Backup Solutions via Avast Business Pro Plus.

As a result, were you recently a finalist for a prestigious award?

Thats right, we were shortlisted for Cyber Newcomer of the Year at the Advisen Cyber Risk Awards 2020 in New York. There were some amazing businesses in our category and to have the work we are doing acknowledged, on a stage like that, made us all immensely proud.

What measures should businesses have in place to protect against cyber threats?

There are a million and one different approaches that an organisation can take to manage their cyber risk, but for SME businesses, putting the following measures/services in place will stand them in great stead; employee awareness training modules; quality antivirus solutions including offsite data back-ups; and a comprehensive cyber insurance program, including risk management support

Its important to remember, however, that cyber security is continuous and business owners shouldnt rest on their laurels if they have already implemented these suggestions. Threat actors only need to be successful once to cause disruption, whereas a businesss defences need to be successful every time.

What cyber security risks are most prevalent right now?

Whilst not a specific attack or threat, I think that businesses need to be aware of one factor more than any other when it comes to cyber security, and that is their resilience and ability to continue to operate following a cyber event.

Increasingly, from our own cyber insurance claims data, we have seen the mishandling of a cyber event become responsible for some substantial losses, so it is essential to ensure your organisation has access to a proper incident response service.

How are cyber-attacks becoming more sophisticated?

Phishing attempts are becoming more and more sophisticated by the day, and many experts see this trend continuing through 2020 and beyond. More businesses provide training on matters of cyber security now than ever before and the criminals know this. They are forever advancing their techniques in line with technology innovations like AI, machine learning and, I imagine in the not too distant future, quantum computing too.

How can you train staff to be aware of the threat of cyber security?

OSR policyholders automatically receive access to an online suite of training modules to educate their employees on subjects like email and password security, virus and malware protocols, phishing, social engineering and remote working. Combining an insurance policy with an employee training platform is just one way in which we are helping to change that cyber insurance narrative, from one of fear to one of education and understanding.

This Pokemon Art Pictures the Perfect Fighting Evolution for Eevee – ComicBook.com

Posted: at 10:09 am

With over 800 monsters in its hand, the Pokemon franchise has enough creatures for every fan to find a favorite. It doesn't matter if your preferences lean towards starters or legendary Pokemon; If you search long enough, you will find the monster that calls to you. Of course, plenty of fans have found themselves charmed by Eevee and all of its evolutions. There are still some types missing from the species, and fans always want to meet more. That is why one artist decided to imagine the perfect Fighting-type evolution for Eevee, and The Pokemon Company would be hard-pressed to outdo this creation.

The Reddit user PTickles posted their take on a Fighting-type evolution and shared it with fans the other day. The art, which can be found below, introduces the world to the tough Champeon. This clever name proves Pokemon is really missing out on a Fighting-type evolution, and fans demand they get one ASAP.

According to the artist, they decided it was time to imagine how these missing Eeveelutions might look in the canon. So far, Eevee has eight different types covered from fairy to water and psychic. That means there are plenty missing like a bug and even dragon, but this fighting Eevee looks ready to jump into the games.

The artist also gave some special stats for this Pokemon, so Champeon is even more ready to fit in than you thought. The creature is given the ability called Scrappy that helps them in battle, and PTicklees explains trainers can evolve Eevee into Champeon so long as the base Pokemon levels up while knowing the move Counter.

For now, such a Pokemon is nothing but a dream in the franchise as Eevee has yet to unlock such a type evolution. The eighth generation of Pokemon did not introduce any new Eeveelutions to the mix, but there is plenty of time for the brand to do so. And when the next bunch is brought to life, we're hoping the name Champeon sticks around.

What do you make of this fan-made evolution? Which evolution type do you want Pokemon to give Eevee next? Let me know in the comments or hit me up on Twitter @MeganPetersCB to talk all things comics and anime!

Disclosure: ComicBook is owned by CBS Interactive, a division of ViacomCBS.

ARB BASE: The Next Evolution in Adventure Roof Racks Has Arrived – GearJunkie

Posted: at 10:09 am

For 45 years, ARB 44 Accessories has innovated products for vehicle-based adventures over rough terrain. Now, for the first time in more than 26 years, ARB releases a new roof rack system.

ARBs very first product was a roof rack. And while the new ARB BASE Rack is just another platform-style roof rack, its one that thoroughly impresses.

ARB says that BASE stands for Build, Attach, Set, and Explore. Sure, that isnt a very exciting name, but it does make sense. Although Australian off-road companies arent known for their quality branding or marketing, they are luckily renowned for innovative and top-quality off-road products.

Why should you care about another platform roof rack hitting the market? Its a valid question, as there are a ton of options out there. Some of the top players in this space are Front Runner, Rhino-Rack, K-9, Yakima, and, of course, ARB. But the all-new ARB BASE Rack stands out from the crowd in a few key ways.

First, its thin profile and completely flat top surface offer a new take. The beam structure of the BASE Rack allows it to be extremely low-profile, aerodynamic, and strong.

The aluminum beams run across the vehicle and are fully welded together. This ensures optimal strength and the lowest weight possible. No welds or hardware protrude from the top of the rack, which maximizes the usable load surface and ensures loaded gear isnt damaged by the rack.

Each beam can hold about 50 pounds, but accessory mounts work to spread the load across multiple beams. As with most top-quality platform roof racks, the vehicle roof is likely to fail before the rack in most cases.

ARB will offer vehicle-specific mounts for the BASE Rack and is sure to have some universal fit-style mounts on offer soon. Vehicle-specific air dams for the BASE Rack ensure aerodynamic efficiency and low wind noise.

Another cool feature of the BASE Rack is the ability to internally route any cables. When mounting electrical accessories, like solar panels and lighting, all you need to do is remove one screw in the corner cap of the rack to access the interior of the beams. This provides the tidiest install possible.

The all-new ARB BASE Rack system has a ton of unique little features, but theside-rails dovetail-style attachment system truly stands out from the crowd. Instead of the traditional t-slot, the BASE Rack has slots on the edges of the rail, both top and bottom. This dovetail-style mounting point allows for easy mounting and unmounting of all accessories and infinite adjustability.

Most platform-style roof racks use a t-slot attachment system for mounting accessories. The big drawbacks to the t-slot system are that it tends to collect grit and grime and requires the attachment mounts to be slid into the t-slot from the ends.

The disadvantage of this is that, many times, you have to remove other mounts to add new mounts. The BASE Rack dovetail-style attachment points mitigate all these issues. Its easier to use, more configurable, and more versatile.

As with any good roof rack system, its the quality, convenient, and secure ways the rack can hold your bulky gear that is key. The BASE Rack not only works with a ton of rack accessories from market leaders like Thule and Yakima, but ARB has also developed a full line of quality mounts themselves.

Especially impressive areARBs slick, low-profile light bar mount which can mount in front of or below the rack and the Hi-Lift mount. The Hi-Lift mount is secure, rattle-free, lockable, and easy to use. There are also quality mounts on offer for traction boards, propane tanks, gas cans, and, of course, some high-quality universal tie-down points.

Another unique feature of the ARB BASE Rack is the ability to set up the brands platform rack with a variety of guard rail styles. On offer arefull rail, three-quarter rail, trade rail, and one-quarter rail offerings. These guard rails are easy to install and remove, allowing you to quickly configure your rack for the task ahead.

ARB will initially only offer two widths and five lengths for the BASE Rack. This should cover most applications but doesnt allow the flexibility and custom fitment that some modular platform racks offer. Initially, the vehicle-specific rack mounts and air dams will be offered only for top Australian vehicles. This means your vehicle might not be able to get the most out of this rack system just yet.

My only real concern with this rack and mount system is that Id think the clamp-style mounts could loosen up and come off when bouncing down rough roads, and especially when traveling over corrugations. That said, Australia is covered in highly corrugated dirt roads, and the brand tested this rack in that environment.

Shipping costs for this one-piece welded design rack also are sure to be more expensive than modular racks. While probably not a big deal, this will add a few dollars to the final price of these racks for many.

We reached out to ARB USA to get pricing and availability details. We found out that the BASE Racks will hit U.S. shores in late summer. But pricing is still a bit of a mystery. We were told that it would be in the middle of the road compared to competitors like Yakima, Rhino-Rack, and Front Runner.

Inside the evolution that turned Kyle Hendricks into the Cubs ace – The Athletic

Posted: at 10:09 am

John Hendricks made connections in Southern California through his outgoing nature, a love of baseball and his job running the San Juan Hills Golf Club. He would inevitably talk about his son, an unassuming pitcher who was easy to overlook on Orange Countys crowded baseball scene.

Kyle wasnt the star at Capistrano Valley High School, a program that produced a second-round pick in 2007 (Mike Watt) and a first-round pick in 2009 (Tyler Matzek). Instead of sitting on the bench at a bigger school, Kyle wanted to play immediately, so he went to Dartmouth after the Angels drafted him in the 39th round in 2008.

Kyle was invited to the prestigious Cape Cod League after his sophomore season at Dartmouth, but only as a temporary player at first, a designation that essentially means a tryout while the team waits for bigger prospects involved with Team USA or the College World Series.

Kyle wasnt a throw-in at the 2012 trade deadline, but Christian...

Planting Justice’s Prison Abolition Work Starts at the Root – KQED

Posted: at 10:09 am

The same thoughts keep running through his mind. That guy sitting in his cell wondering if hes going to outlive his sentence, all the amends he made or wants to makewill he get to see that through? Will he get to be like me and the numerous other people who are formerly incarcerated and are doing great things in the community right now? I think about them and that my voice has to be in advocacy for them.

B

eyond the urgency of the San Quentin COVID outbreak, Lockhearts day-to-day work at Planting Justice is about the longterm project of prison abolition, which means working with people to build healthier communities. The definition of that is manifold. It means helping formerly incarcerated people get on their feet through green jobs at Planting Justice, awakening them to a new sense of purpose by building raised flower beds for clients and tending to plants at the organizations nursery and farm. It means teaching about sustainability and food justice in public school classrooms, juvenile detention centers, jails and prisons. It means helping people who live in food deserts start urban gardens. It means handing out free kale smoothies at Castlemont High School during a time when many are going hungry because of the pandemic-induced recession.

If we go in and teach these people how to grow their own food and how to be sustainablethe Black Panther Party got it right, Lockheart says. With no food and no options, [people are] gonna go get it how they can. And unfortunately, thats crime. And crime equals prison. We wanna abolish the prisons, we wanna abolish all these systems, but we first have to plant the seeds of love, trust and sustainability.

Lockheart and his fellow reentry coordinator Diane Williams sow those seeds by helping their colleagues get acclimated to life outside of prison, sometimes in ways people whove never been incarcerated may take for granted. Planting Justice gives former residents, as formerly incarcerated people are called there, clothing and food stipends; Lockheart and Williams help them navigate bureaucratic tasks such as reinstating a drivers license after a DUI. They offer emotional support too. Meditation circles are as much a part of the workday as pulling weeds and watering strawberries and squashes.

Really its believing in them and whatever they bring to the table thats positive, encourage that, says Williams, who brings 40 years of social work and substance-abuse counseling experience to Planting Justice. So much stuff that happened to us as a little kids, we keep recycling it as adults until we process it and move on. So were just helping each other move on here.

P

lanting Justice takes a big-picture view of how access to healthy and environmentally conscious practices can help address some of the wounds of systemic racism and mass incarceration. Another one of the organizations projects zooms out even further, addressing the ways the unjust systems that marginalize Black and Indigenous communities began with colonialism.

The organization collaborated with the Sogorea Te Land Trust to give two acres of land back to people of the Ohlone community of Northern California. The Ohlone people arent a federally recognized tribe, nor do they have a land base. Now, two acres of the Rolling River Nursery are an Ohlone cultural heritage site and a space for ceremony.

Williams, who is part of the Native American community and helped organize the partnership, says that Ohlone ideas of land as sacred inform Planting Justices work. Its a love, she says. You cant tell people, Youve got to love this land because its supporting you. No. Its something you have to develop for people whove been separated from the land.

Understanding the history of colonization is the deeper work, echoes Planting Justice media director Ashley Yates. When you control the land, you control the people, you control the resources. And when were talking about BIPOC communities, you understand theres also a disconnect thats intentional because our spirituality and our communities are vested in the earth. We are an earth-reverent people. So when you disconnect people from that, you disconnect people from their power.

Hungarys Independent Press Takes Another Blow and Reporters Quit – The New York Times

BUDAPEST Hungarys most widely read news site was thrown into disarray this week after the organizations editor in chief was fired and scores of journalists quit in protest as the government moved closer to near-complete control over the countrys media landscape.

A decade into Prime Minister Viktor Orbans quest to transform Hungary into an illiberal nation, where he controls nearly all levers of the state and uses them to maintain his grip on power, the takeover of Index.hus advertising unit by an Orban ally was part of a broader effort to limit dissenting voices and silence critics.

The potential loss of the news site as a check on the government was a particularly painful blow to the small but determined coterie of independent journalists left working in the country.

The site was one of many independent media outlets in Central Europe that have come under sustained financial and political pressure from governments bent on controlling public discourse.

More than half the staff at Index, some 70 employees, announced their resignations on Friday after the firing of the editor, Szabolcs Dull.

We have emphasized for years that we have two requirements for Index to continue operating independently: that there be no outside interference in Indexs content or in the composition or structure of Indexs staff, the group said in a statement. The firing of Szabolcs Dull violated the latter of these requirements. His dismissal was a clear interference in the composition of the staff.

The steady decline of independent news outlets is part of the slide toward autocratic rule in Hungary and, to a lesser extent, in Poland. Those concerns were key sticking points in the debate over the European Unions $857 billion pandemic recovery plan and whether Hungary and Poland should be penalized financially.

In the end, recovery money was not tied in a significant way to the behavior of member states, appeasing Poland and Hungary, and setting up a possible clash as the deal moves to the European Parliament for final approval.

Earlier this month, Polands president, Andrzej Duda, narrowly won re-election after a bitter campaign in which the media was a frequent target.

Mr. Duda accused Germany of trying to influence the result through media outlets owned by German companies. The government even summoned Germanys charges-daffaires to complain about the matter, and has yet to approve Germanys incoming ambassador.

After the election, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the leader of the ruling Law and Justice Party, vowed to press ahead with plans to limit media ownership by foreign companies.

The media in Poland should be Polish, the party leader declared after the victory.

Since coming into power in 2015, Law and Justice has transformed state television into a propaganda arm of the government, applied financial pressure on Polish media by preventing all state-related entities from advertising with critical outlets, and waged aggressive campaigns against journalists critical of the government.

Poland fell to 62nd place out of 180 countries ranked in the World Press Freedom Index in 2020, dropping from 18th in 2015.

The election results are being challenged in the countrys Supreme Court, with one of the accusations being that the Law and Justice partys control over state television created an unfair playing field.

The Polish government has often followed the path set by Mr. Orban, who has transformed the media landscape in Hungary despite European Union pressure to change course.

When Mr. Orban returned to power in 2010, he and his allies immediately went to work overhauling the countrys democratic framework. A landslide victory at the polls in 2010 allowed them to unilaterally rewrite Hungarys constitution and change its electoral laws to favor their party. Since then, they have secured constitutional supermajorities in two subsequent elections, despite receiving less than 50 percent of the popular vote.

The Constitutional Court has been stacked and lower courts overhauled, public media and most of the countrys private media have come under the control of the prime ministers allies, and independent watchdog institutions have been stripped of influence.

In late 2018, hundreds of nominally independent media outlets controlled by the prime ministers allies were given to another foundation controlled by Mr. Orbans confidants. Media and competition regulators were barred from scrutinizing the transactions, according to a decree issued by Mr. Orban in early December 2018, on grounds that the ownership changes were of strategic national interest.

Index, which traces its roots to the advent of internet news in Hungary, had largely weathered many political storms over the past decade.

It has reported critically of Mr. Orbans government, prominently featuring stories of Russian meddling in Hungary, alleged graft involving politicians and individuals close to Mr. Orbans inner circle, and by chronicling other government policies widely condemned as assaults on democratic institutions.

In March, as Europe struggled to contain the coronavirus, Miklos Vaszily, a media executive with close ties to Mr. Orbans allies, acquired 50 percent of Indexs advertising business.

The move prompted concern from journalists and free press advocates, not least because of Mr. Vaszilys role in overhauling media outlets, including Origo, a site once regarded as one of Hungarys most reputable independent news organizations.

On June 21, local media reports indicated the leadership at Index planned to overhaul the websites staff, essentially turning reporters into outside contributors. The staff declared the plan a threat to its independence, warning of a concerted attempt to expose the publication to heightened political interference. Within days, the editor in chief was removed from the companys board, its chief executive officer resigned, as did an incoming C.E.O.

The matter remained at a standstill until Wednesday, when Mr. Dull, the chief editor, was fired by Laszlo Bodolai, head of the foundation that exercises ownership of the publication. Mr. Bodolai accused Mr. Dull of being unable to quell internal anxiety at Index, endangering the business.

In a statement released after his departure, Mr. Dull said he always acted with the interests of his staff in mind.

It is no coincidence that Indexs staff felt at risk, he wrote, adding that the recent events have convinced him that Hungary needs a newspaper where content is not decided by outside powers.

A last-ditch attempt by the news outlets staff failed to convince the organizations management to rehire the dismissed editor in chief.

We dont know what is happening, Veronika Munk, the deputy editor in chief, said Thursday afternoon. I firmly feel that for many in the staff work has ended at Index.

Through a windfall of state advertising contracts, which often promote conspiracy theories and attacks on the European Union, media entities under the control of Mr. Orbans allies have flourished. They have been instrumental in promulgating sweeping state-funded propaganda campaigns that tap into anti-Semitic tropes reminiscent of the interwar period.

Imagine all the media in a U.S. state were to come under the ownership of a single political group, says Gabor Polyak of Mertek Media Monitor, a media think tank, and all of these media outlets are funded by taxpayer money.

In 2018, the European Parliament voted resoundingly to initiate proceedings against Mr. Orbans government for what critics say are systemic threats to Hungarys rule of law and democracy. The process could strip Mr. Orban of his vote in the European Council.

At the debate, Mr. Orban rejected criticism of his stewardship of Hungary.

We would never resort to silencing those who disagree with us, the prime minister said.

10 Growth Stocks to Buy for Long-Term FIRE Investors – Investorplace.com

Posted: at 10:09 am

For young FIRE investors, retirement isnt an age. Its a number. And its a number which they believe they can get to rather quickly. Much more quickly than their parents did.

FIRE which stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early is a modern, Millennial-driven movement creating a blueprint for young workers to follow so that they can retire well before 65, and even as early as 35 or 40.

What does that blueprint look like? Its not too complex.

Save. Invest. Retire.

Specifically, live with minimal expenses so that you can afford to regardless of your income save anywhere between 50% and 75% of your annual salary. Take those savings and smartly invest them across various assets, like stocks.

Watch your investment portfolio benefit from the wonders of compounding. Retire within 15 to 20 years as a millionaire. Heres the math.

Its 2020. Lets say you have a job which pays $60,000 per year (the median household salary in the U.S. today). Lets also say you live by FIRE principles, and invest half of that salary every year. If you net out 10% returns per year on those investments, then by 2040, your investment account will have more than $2 million in it.

And thats what the FIRE movement is all about. Creating millionaires through frugal living and smart investing.

Of course, critical to unlocking this huge growth is picking the right stocks to buy so that you can net out those 10% returns per year. Here are 10 growth stocks to buy for long-term FIRE investors:

With a disciplined budget and these stocks in your portfolio, financial independence is closer than you think.

FIRE investors want exposure to Amazon. This company has its fingers in every important, hyper-growth industry out there.

Amazon.com is the global leader in e-commerce, a space which is projected to grow by leaps and bounds over the next several years as consumers continue to migrate into online channels.

Amazon Web Services is also the global leader in cloud computing, a space which is similarly projected to grow dramatically as businesses increasingly digitize office workloads.

Meanwhile, the companys smart home business headlined by Alexa is a leader in the emerging voice assistant and AI-powered consumer products market. Amazons digital ad business is in the first innings of becoming a formidable player in that secular growth industry. Amazon also owns Twitch, the leading video game streaming platform, which will see huge uptake over the next few years as eSports gain traction.

Theres also the autonomous vehicle business, which was boosted recently by the acquisition of Zoox. At scale, Amazon could build out a fairly robust self-driving logistics business.

Net net, Amazon has a ton of long-term growth potential through its various hyper-growth businesses. All of that potential will keep AMZN stock on a healthy upward trajectory for the next 10+ years.

Maybe the best growth stock to buy for FIRE investors is Shopify.

Thats because this company is rapidly turning into the backbone of modern commerce, a journey which will ultimately power huge gains in revenues, profits and the stock price over the next 10+ years.

Shopify broadly provides e-commerce solutions to merchants and retailers of all shapes and sizes. Such tools include website building tools, expert consulting advice, digital marketing insights, social channel selling capabilities and much more.

These tools are the building blocks of modern commerce. That is, a retailer cannot stay alive for long today without a robust online selling operation, and that robust online selling operation is powered by the tools which Shopify provides.

To that end, Shopify is becoming the backbone of modern commerce. Yet gross merchandise value through the platform measured less than 2% of total e-retail sales last year. And the companys profit margins are essentially flat today, despite near 60% gross margins.

Thus, over the next 10+ years, Shopify will leverage e-commerce tailwinds to dramatically grow its share of the global retail market, power huge revenue growth, drive significant margin expansion and produce enormous profit growth.

That enormous profit growth will help SHOP stock sustain huge gains in the long run.

Facebook has tremendous long-term growth potential, making it a must-buy for FIRE investors.

The company owns four of the most used social media apps in the world. Each of them Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger have over a billion users. Yet, only two of them Facebook and Instagram are populated with ads. Thus, Facebook has a huge opportunity in the long run to roll out ads on WhatsApp and Messenger, dramatically increase ad inventory in its ecosystem and power huge revenue growth.

Thats on top what is already rapid ad revenue growth on Facebook and Instagram, which is powered by an exceptionally sticky user base and a shift of ad dollars from offline to online channels.

Even further, Facebook has a huge opportunity in e-commerce. We are already spending all of our time on social channels. And we are already discovering tons of products and services on social feeds. So why not just buy products and services though social channels, too?

Facebook is trying to build out this last step in the shopping process, with new initiatives like Shops. If these initiatives gain traction over the next decade, Facebook could inject a ton of e-commerce related revenue into its growth narrative.

Big picture: Facebook has a ton of growth potential over the next decade, and all that growth potential will drive consistently large gains in FB stock.

The shift from guess-and-check, human-driven processes towards data-driven, computer-powered processes is already one of the biggest trends in the world, and that is only set to acccelerate.

One way to play this trend is to buy programmatic advertising leader The Trade Desk.

The Trade Desk operates a demand-side advertising platform which leverages data-driven algorithms to dynamically and automatically run ad campaigns in way that decreases costs and optimizes every ad dollar spent.

This form of data-driven advertising is the future of advertising.

Yet today, only about 1% of total digital ad spending goes through The Trade Desks platform.

Thus, this innovative company has a huge opportunity to grow market share, ad spend and revenues over the next decade. The Trade Desk will do just that. At the same time, the companys highly scalable application software business model will benefit from positive operating leverage and profit margin expansion.

At the end of the day then, The Trade Desk is in the first few innings of a huge, multi-year growth narrative wherein the companys profits and stock price will soar higher.

The future of meats consumption is plant-based, and this simple reality makes Beyond Meat one of the best stocks to buy for FIRE investors.

In a nutshell, one of the defining megatrends of the 2020s which started to emerge in the late 2010s will be a mass consumer shift towards socially and environmentally positive products and services.

Why? Thanks to the internet and social media, consumers are plugged into everything, all the time. This always on behavior from consumers has increased their social and environmental awareness, to a point where they increasingly want to do their part to save the planet.

The adoption of plant-based meat fits in perfectly with this trend.

Relative to animal meat, plant-based meat is environmentally positive (it eliminates the need for cows and meat production plants, which are huge contributors to global warming) and socially positive (it preserves animal welfare). So over the next decade, as more and more consumers pivot towards socially and environmentally positive products and services, many of these consumers will gradually adopt plant-based meat.

Beyond Meat is the Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) of this space. They have the branding power. They have all the distribution partnerships. And they have robust technological advantages in efficiently mass-producing plant-based meat of all varieties.

So, what Tesla did in the 2010s is what Beyond Meat could do in the 2020s.

And that makes BYND stock one of the best stocks to buy for young FIRE investors.

Adobe as a leader in all things visual media is set to win big over the next 10+ years as the world increasingly communicates through visual media.

Long story short, everything is visual these days. Consumers are spending all their time communicating with each other through visual-heavy social apps, like Instagram, Snap (NYSE:SNAP), and TikTok. Because of this, brands are spending all their time communicating with customers through these visual-heavy social apps, too.

What this creates is persistently rising demand for tools which help consumers and enterprises create compelling visual content.

Adobe is the head-and-shoulders-above-the-rest sector leader when it comes to providing those tools.

Consequently, demand for the companys consumer-facing and enterprise-facing visual media content tools will surge over the next 10+ years as the world more significantly pivots into visual communication.

At the same time, Adobe has a digital workflow business which helps businesses digitize their contract management processes. This business, too, has secular growth prospects, thanks to the rise of remote work.

Overall then, Adobe has a bright future. That bright future will continue to guide ADBE stock to big gains for long-term investors.

Okta has developed a unique cloud security platform that represents the future of how companies will secure their workflows and data.

In a nutshell, Okta has created a security platform which turns identity into the defense perimeter. What that means is that, as opposed to protecting a companys workflows and data with a wall of security, Okta simply protects the identities of each employee in the ecosystem. In so doing, the company has created a cloud security platform which optimizes for employee mobility and workflow flexibility without compromising security integrity.

In the future, organizations will employ a hybrid business model which incorporates remote and in-office work. Oktas novel Identity Cloud platform is the ideal security solution in that world.

As such, Oktas Identity Cloud platform will go from relatively niche today, to nearly ubiquitous over the next decade. As that happens, the companys customer base, revenues and profits will all soar.

So will OKTA stock.

And that makes OKTA one of the best stocks to buy for long-term FIRE investors.

The long-term bull thesis on Roku is very simple.

Streaming TV is the new cable TV. But, when you sit back and think about it, streaming TV isnt too different from cable TV. It just has multiple on-demand streaming services, as opposed to multiple pre-programmed channels.

Still, in both spaces the existence of multiple content options mandates the existence a centralized software platform that aggregates and curates all the content, and provides consumers with seamless access to whatever they want to watch.

In the old cable TV world, the cable box did this job. In the new streaming TV world, Roku does this job.

The company has created a centralized software platform which both operates through standalone plug-and-play Roku devices, and is built-in into smart TVs that aggregates, curates and provides seamless access to all the streaming services in the world, from Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) to Disney+ to Amazon Prime Video.

In so doing, Roku is turning into the cable box of streaming TV.

Thats a valuable position to be in. Over the next 5 to 10 years, the $70+ billion of ad spend sitting in the linear TV channel, will migrate into the streaming TV channel. As it does, a lot of those ad dollars will make their way into the Roku ecosystem, since its the biggest central access point in the entire industry.

This huge influx of TV ad dollars will propel equally huge revenue growth at Roku. Big profit growth will follow suit. So will big gains in ROKU stock.

Young FIRE investors should invest in the big data revolution.

Thats because over the next decade, the widespread proliferation of data-tracking software will dramatically increase the volume of data globally. At the same time, technological advancements in AI-powered data analytics algorithm will dramatically increase the value of insights companies can glean from data.

In essence then, the global big data market is on the cusp of huge growth. By the end of the decade, data will be everywhere. So will data analytics tools and platforms.

Splunk is at the heart of this big data megatrend.

The company provides market-leading data analysis tools through its Data-to-Everything platform which allow companies to take the mountains of data they are collecting, and quickly turn into them into accurate and actionable insights.

These tools will increasingly become mission-critical and ubiquitous over the next decade.

As they do, Splunks growth narrative and SPLK stock will power higher over the next 10+ years.

Last but not least, on this list of growth stocks to buy for FIRE investors is Square.

Square is a pure-play on the cashless commerce revolution.

The era of cash is coming to an end. The era of card and digital payments is here. Square has built a robust portfolio of tools and services to help facilitate this transition from cash to cashless payments.

This includes seller-side tools, such as cashless payment readers, digital payroll management services and e-banking services. It also includes buyer-side tools, such as the digital peer-to-peer payments ecosystem, Cash App and an accompanying debit card.

Both of these sets of tools will see robust adoption over the next few years as cash increasingly becomes antiquated.

Squares reach across the global payments network will increase. The companys revenues and profits will soar. So will the SQ stock price.

What Is Abolition, And Why Do We Need It? – Vogue

Posted: at 10:09 am

Rather than creating safety, our punishment system is an active source of harm for many. And the systems violence extends far beyond what makes the news. Black, disabled, and sex-working women and trans people are especially vulnerable to police violence and often face sexual assault at the hands of the police. Disabled people are estimated to make up as many as half of those murdered by police. Between 70 and 100 million Americans have a criminal record, and one year in prison takes two years off ones life expectancy. Further, there are more than 10 million arrests per year, and a misdemeanor arrestthe standard encounter between police and civilianscan upend a life, leading to lasting exclusions from employment and other opportunities.

So while some ask how we will be safe without police and prisons, abolitionists point out that most people cannot be safe so long as they exist. For this reason, abolitionists are, at heart, buildersbuilders of community safety, well-being, accountability, and harm prevention. As abolitionist Ruth Wilson Gilmore has said, abolition is about presencethe presence of life-giving systems that allow people to thrive and be well, that prevent harm and better equip communities to address harm when it occurs.

To be clear, building toward a world without prisons is different than believing in a world without harm. As one contributor to the prisoner-run publication In the Belly writes, abolitionists are not promising a world without harm. People hurt each other, and that wont change. But why do we all just accept that the appropriate response to harm is more harm, administered by the state?

Instead, when presented with harm, abolitionists reject the false choice of putting someone in a cage or doing nothing. In fact, abolitionists are actively building various models of preventing and responding to harm, focusing in particular on community accountability processes that, as our #8ToAbolition cocreators recently explained, seek safety for those harmed, changed behaviors for those who caused harm, and a transformation of the conditions that allowed the harm to occur.

Countless groups across the country are doing the work of safety building. In Washington D.C., the Collective Action for Safe Spaces (CASS) trains community members to intervene in gendered public harassment and, through the Rethink Masculinity program, helps men to identify harmful behaviors and build relationships of accountability and care. Likewise, the Bay Area Transformative Justice Collective holds regular labs to help community members build skills around transformative justice and ending child sexual abuse. Across the country, violence interrupters work to halt lethal violence before it happens by resolving conflicts and building healthy relationships between community members. And beyond programming centered on ending violence, groups focusing on mutual aid are doing the work of abolition by meeting community members needs and building local models of self-sufficiency. This is a small sliver of the work being done by abolitionists.

Ultimately, abolitionists do not have all the answersbut we are committed to finding them together. Prison is a one-size-fits-all solution, sending people to cages for violating a criminal law. Abolition requires just the opposite, recognizing the complexity of harm and the indispensability of humanity.

Ultimately, abolition is a verb, a practice. It consists of the actions we take to build safety and to tear down harmful institutions. People do abolition every day when they connect to their community, learn how to take accountability, and foster communal responsibility for preventing and responding to harm.

Abolition is within our reach; its up to us to build it.

Reiana Sultan and Micah Herskind are 2 of the 10 cocreators of the #8ToAbolition campaign.

How will Brexit impact recruitment? – Lexology

Posted: at 10:09 am

As Brexit resurfaces in the news, we look at how it will impact recruitment practices, from the government's proposed new points-based immigration system for EU and non-EU nationals to attracting and developing talent.

Points-based immigration

As things stand, free movement of people between the UK and the rest of the EU will end on 31 December 2020. Individuals who are resident in the UK on or before then based on EU free movement rules can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme if they wish to continue to lawfully live and work in the UK. Employers would be wise to carry out staff audits to identify who may be impacted.

From 1 January 2021, a new immigration system will apply that will cover both EU and non-EU nationals meaning EU nationals arriving in the UK after this date will need a visa to live and work in the UK. Those who have been granted status under the Settlement Scheme will continue to be governed by the rules of that scheme.

Under the proposed new points-based immigration system for both EU and non-EU nationals, some eligibility criteria will be mandatory but other characteristics would be tradeable so that an applicant could offset certain strengths against certain weaknesses to meet the overall points threshold. As part of these proposals, the controversial resident labour market test would be abolished meaning that mandatory advertising to the resident UK workforce would no longer be legally required.

Sponsorship

The need for a sponsor job offer will add time and as yet unspecified expense to existing recruitment processes. However, there are a number of aspects under the proposed new scheme that would actually make sponsorship of non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals easier.

The abolition of the resident labour market test would allow for broader and more innovative advertising, rather than the current prescribed locations and format. The minimum skill level of sponsored workers will also drop, as will the general minimum salary threshold, increasing the pool of non-EU workers that can theoretically be sponsored. The government has also proposed to remove the cap on the number of visas that can be issued under the current system.

There is an important exception to the rule, in that a proposed global talent visa category will allow the most highly skilled workers without a job offer primarily with a background in STEM subjects to come to the UK. Other non-sponsorship routes are also being considered.

Competing for UK-based talent

The proposed changes to the immigration system have the potential to make already competitive recruitment processes that much harder for individuals especially for senior posts. Employers may have to rethink the way they attract talent in order to stand out from the crowd.

Given the current economic situation and anticipated downturn, employers would be wise to focus on what they can offer prospective employees other than pure salary especially as salaries could decrease in relative terms. Many employees will gauge employers by the benefits they offer.

Employers who promote work-life balance through flexible working for example are likely to be attractive to job seekers, especially following the change in working patterns for many people as a result of Covid-19. Similarly, being able to evidence a positive culture that makes employees feel valued and supported is likely to have a significant impact on employee retention levels.

Developing existing talent

The new immigration system will arguably make it easier for employers to employ non-UK nationals in more senior or highly skilled roles. As such, employers will likely be more concerned with how they fill perceived staffing gaps for so-called low skilled roles.

The government has urged employers to develop their own UK-based staff and look to the economically inactive to fill the gaps created once their access to low-skilled EU labour is cut off. Employers could consider if their current recruitment processes act as a barrier to talent and look to widen their existing recruitment criteria and target demographics if this is the case. Many employers have already recognised that there are untapped resources out there, for example women who have left work to raise children and who may now be looking to return to a work environment.

Low skilled or entry level roles that do not require particular skills could be used as training and development opportunities to improve staff retention. Likewise, apprenticeship schemes or graduate programmes could benefit younger workers who can learn the skills they need on the job.

While additional investment in training will incur further cost, this may be more palatable than the costly and often time consuming process of recruiting skilled workers from overseas.

Future trends

In the longer term, automating certain jobs or roles, such as repetitive manufacturing processes may help employers to deal with challenging recruitment conditions and increase productivity. However, it should be approached on a case by case basis, as certain roles will not be suitable for machines alone and will always require an element of human involvement.

The current economic downturn is likely to mean less people are looking to move jobs, but employers should work to better understand what drives their existing workforce and how to keep them engaged. Salary is not always the determining factor management, targets, workload and culture may be just as important. Employee surveys and informal feedback opportunities are relatively low cost, low effort ways of facilitating this and signposting where employers could do better in managing staff turnover.

Right to work checks are an obvious but often overlooked consideration. UK employers are required to conduct right to work checks on all prospective employees. They must retain clear records of workers' rights to work in the UK in either prescribed electronic form or hard copy, for the duration of the employment and for a period of two years afterwards. The way EU/EEA/Swiss nationals prove their right to work in the UK will undoubtedly change when the new immigration system is implemented in 2021, and new guidance on right to work checks is expected before then.
