Experiencing the Civil War through virtual reality | Local News – SoMdNews.com

From deep inside a hand-dug trench, cannon blasts rattle you and shrapnel rains down all around. The smoke is so thick, you can hardly make out the Union soldiers on your left scrambling to reload their rifles. On your right, a lieutenant screams, over the din of whooping Confederates downrange, for his men to stay at the ready. A near-miss musket ball zings over your head.

And then the scene fades to black. You glance away from the smartphone in your hands, and you finally exhale. It was just a video, but it made you feel like you were there. Youve just experienced virtual reality, or VR for short. This ambitious video project is called Civil War 1864: A Virtual Reality Experience.

This VR footage offers an unimpeded 360-degree view of the action: look up, down, behind you, any which way, and youll see and hear different parts of the scene unfolding in real time. For the viewer, it can be an instantly immersive and almost dreamlike encounter and thats exactly the point, according to Mary Koik, spokeswoman for the American Battlefield Trust, the organization that produced Civil War 1864.

Thats what wed love people to feel like that theyre in an experience they could only imagine, she said. You can read books, watch inspirational documentaries, and go to sites and feel moved by them. But youre imagining the past. This is the closest weve been able to [come towards] find[ing] a way to really put people into history."

The nonprofit, nonpartisan American Battlefield Trust began more than three decades ago as the Civil War Trust, and to date, the organization has protected more than 50,000 acres of land associated with that war, as well as from the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. But this project is about more than the intrinsic value of land preservation, Koik said.

If we dont inspire people to care about history, then a generation from now, it loses something. Its about getting people to feel impacted by history, that theres a connection and resonance to them today. Thats why we preserve things to feel connected.

To replicate what a regular experience would have been like for the average Civil War soldier, the American Battlefield Trust hired a production company that specializes in filming historical reenactments, Kansas City-based Wide Awake Films. Starting in 2015, from concept to completion, it took two full years to create.

On a western Missouri farm that stood in for a Civil War battlefront, the filmmakers brought to life four separate vignettes: Union soldiers on patrol, Confederates on patrol, combat in the trenches, and a scene at a field hospital. They also had help from passionate Civil War buffs who made sure every last item, down to the buttons on the uniforms, was as historically accurate as possible.

Normally, a film director stays behind the camera, but with a six-camera GoPro rig capturing images from literally every angle, that option was out of the question. Director Shane Seley ended up in costume himself, dressed as a Union soldier, to blend into the action.

Everything you can see with your naked eye in a 360-degree plane is seen, said Seley, who's also the founder of Wide Awake Films. It was Filmmaking 101; it was very tough for us. We had to be creative. Some of us on crew were wearing uniform parts, and would play dead or hide when we were filming, because theres nowhere to hide on a virtual reality set.

Seley is himself a self-described history nerd (the name of his company and its eyeball logo come from the "Wide Awake" political movement of the 1860s that helped get Abraham Lincoln elected), and his production company has been working with the American Battlefield Trust since 2001.

Everybody in our shop is into this stuff, telling the stories of veterans and American heroes, and making sure we get it right make sure its compelling and interesting for todays audience, he said. If our stuff doesnt stand its ground among anything else they see on Netflix or a game, then we shouldnt even be doing it.

For true sensory immersion, Seley recommends viewing Civil War 1864 with an Oculus headset, if possible. Otherwise, grab your mobile device, find a dark room, plop into a chair that swivels, put on some headphones, and enjoy the nuanced audio production. The remarkable sound effects will shift and change, depending on which direction youre facing.

The point of this kind of thing is, Seley said, [to] get kids and new generations interested in this stuff. Im a Gen Xer. Not a lot of my friends are into it. We need to keep this stuff alive, especially if were going to keep these battlefields alive, these islands of green among the concrete.

As technology has improved and expanded, the American Battlefield Trust is trying out new ways to reach and inspire, especially in trying to marry the idea of technology and place-based education. Being on an actual battlefield is important, Koik said, but its equally important to reach people where they are.

Weve tested apps on the phone, and theyre GPS enabled, so when youre on the battlefield, youll see video of a top historian giving a speech hed make on a tour if he were there. But thats also something someone a thousand miles away can use, she said.

Moving forward, the trust plans to offer more in the way of AR, or augmented reality that is, putting something that isnt really there into the place where you are. Imagine being at Gettysburg; you could hold aloft your phone to see soldiers at a distance moving across the landscape at the Little Round Top battlefield, or watch Lincoln himself deliver his famous address.

Other future AR or VR opportunities could include the American Revolution and the War of 1812, though the Trust primarily has focused on the events of the Civil War, Koik said.

The fact that you can use it to tell stories is really compelling, she said. I really do believe that the word story is part of the word history for a reason. These personal moments, what people lived and experienced, connects us to the past, and getting to approximate that experience is what makes it even more powerful. They were a person, just like you.

Transhumanism: Meet the cyborgs and biohackers redefining beauty – CNN

Posted: at 12:46 am

Written by Karina Tsui, CNN

Today, we can alter our bodies in previously unimaginable ways, whether that's implanting microchips, fitting advanced prosthetic limbs or even designing entirely new senses.

So-called transhumanists -- people who seek to improve their biology by enhancing their bodies with technology -- believe that our natural condition inhibits our experience of the world, and that we can transcend our current capabilities through science.

Ideas that are "technoprogressive" to some are controversial to others. But to photographer David Vintiner, they are something else altogether: beautiful.

Made in collaboration with art director and critic Gem Fletcher, the book features a variety of people who identify, to some degree, as "transhuman" -- including a man with bionic ears that sense changes in atmospheric pressure, a woman who can "feel" earthquakes taking place around the world and technicians who have developed lab-made organs.

Fletcher was first introduced to the transhumanist subculture via the London Futurist Group, an organization that explores how technology can counter future crises. Upon meeting some of its members, the London-based art director approached Vintiner with the idea of photographing them in a series of portraits.

"Our first shoot was with Andrew Vladimirov, a DIY 'brain hacker,'" Vintiner recalled in a phone interview. "Each time we photographed someone new, we asked for referrals and introductions to other key people within the movement."

Redefining human experience

One of Vintiner's subjects, James Young, turned to bionics after losing his arm and leg in an accident in 2012. Young had always been interested in biotechnology and was particularly drawn to the aesthetics of science fiction. Visualizing how his body could be "re-built," or even perform enhanced tasks with the help of the latest technology, became part of his recovery process.

But according to the 29-year-old, the options presented to him by doctors were far from exciting -- standard-issue steel bionic limbs with flesh-colored silicone sleeves.

"To see what was available was the most upsetting part," Young said in a video interview.

"What the human body can constitute, in terms of tools and technology, is such a blurry thing -- if you think about the arm, it's just a sensory piece of equipment.

"If there was anyone who would get their arm and leg chopped off, it would be me because I'm excited about technology and what it can get done."

Japanese gaming giant Konami worked with prosthetics sculptor Sophie de Oliveira Barata to design a set of bionic limbs for Young. The result was an arm and leg made from gray carbon fiber -- an aesthetic partly inspired by Konami's "Metal Gear Solid," one of the then-22-year-old's favorite video games.

Beyond the expected functions, Young's robotic arm features a USB port, a screen displaying his Twitter feed and a retractable dock containing a remote-controlled drone. The limbs are controlled by sensors that convert nerve impulses from Young's spine into physical movements.

"Advanced prosthetics enabled James to change people's perception of (his) disability," said Vintiner of Young, adding: "When you first show people the photographs, they are shocked and disconcerted by the ideas contained within. But if you dissect the ideas, they realize that they are very pragmatic."

Young says it has taken several years for people to appreciate not just the functions of advanced bionic limbs but their aesthetics, too. "Bionic and electronic limbs were deemed scary, purely because of how they looked," he said. "They coincided with the idea that 'disability is not sexy.'"

He also felt there was stigma surrounding bionics, because patients were often given flesh-colored sleeves to conceal their artificial limbs.

"Visually, we think that this is the boundary of the human body," Young said, referring to his remaining biological arm. "Opportunities for transhumanists open up because a bionic arm can't feel pain, or it can be instantly replaced if you have the money. It has different abilities to withstand heat and to not be sunburned."

As Vintiner continued shooting the portraits, he felt many of his preconceptions being challenged. The process also raised a profound question: If technology can change what it is to be human, can it also change what it means to be beautiful?

"Most of my (original) work centers around people -- their behavior, character, quirks and stories," he said. "But this project took the concept of beauty to another level."

Eye of the beholder

Science's impact over our understanding of aesthetics is, to Vintiner, one of the most fascinating aspects of transhumanism. What he discovered, however, was that many in the movement still look toward existing beauty standards as a model for "post-human" perfection.

Speaking to CNN Style in 2018, Hanson said that Sophia's form would resonate with people around the world, and that her appearance was partly inspired by real women including Hanson's wife and Audrey Hepburn, as well as statues of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti.

Related video: Meet Sophia, the robot who smiles and frowns just like us

But with her light hazel eyes, perfectly arched eyebrows, long eyelashes, defined cheekbones and plump lips -- Sophia's appearance arguably epitomizes that of a conventionally beautiful Caucasian woman.

"When I photographed Ben Goertzel, he vocalized how he took no time to consider how he (himself) looked -- it was of no interest to him," the photographer recalled of the photo shoot.

Vintiner saw a certain irony: that someone who was unconcerned about his own appearance would nonetheless project our preoccupation with beauty through his company's invention.

It also served as a reminder that attractiveness may be more complex than algorithms can ever fathom.

"I fear that if we can design humans without any of the 'flaws' that occur in our biological makeup, things will be pushed further and further towards a level of perfection we can only imagine right now." Vintiner said. "Look at how plastic surgery has altered our perception of beauty in a very short space of time.

"If the transhumanists are right and we, as humans, can live to be several hundreds of years old, our notion of beauty and the very meaning of what it is to be human will change dramatically."

‘They Have to Reinvent Her’: Margaret Sanger’s Fans Work to Clean Up Her Racist Past – CBN News

Posted: at 12:45 am

As the founder of the American Birth Control League which later became Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger was no doubt a controversial figure with disturbing views on eugenics, race, and population control.

Some argue she wanted to exterminate the black race, while others are trying to erase that part of her past.

"In the eyes of some, Margaret Sanger has been a heroine," news anchor Mike Wallace said in a 1969 interview with Sanger. "In the eyes of others, she's been a destructive force."

In her own words, Sanger strived for a society that limited births to those she deemed fit to have children.

"I think the greatest sin in the world is bringing children into the world that have disease from their parents, that have no chance in the world to be a human being practical; delinquents, prisoners, all sorts of things, just marked when they're born," Sanger told Wallace.

In 1916 Sanger opened the country's first birth-control clinic. And as a member of the American Eugenics Society, she advocated improving the 'genetic composition of humans through controlled reproduction of different races and classes.'

She often wrote about the issue in the journal she founded called The Birth Control Review.

Margaret Sanger's Beliefs About Race and Eugenics Exposed

In 1919 in an article called "Birth Control and Racial Betterment," she wrote, "I personally believe in the sterilization of the feeble-minded, the insane, and the syphilitic."

And in 1921 in a piece called, "The Eugenic Value of Birth Control Propaganda," she said, "The most urgent problem today is how to limit and discourage the over-fertility of the mentally and physically defective."

Many point to a 1923 New York Times interview as proof of Sanger's racist and eugenic motives, in which she referred to some groups of people as "human weeds."

"Birth Control is not contraception indiscriminately and thoughtlessly practiced," she said in the article. "It means the release and cultivation of the better racial elements in our society, and the gradual suppression, elimination, and eventual extirpation [destruction]of defective stocks - those human weeds which threaten the blooming of the finest flowers of American civilization."

Hayden Ludwig, an investigative researcher for the Capital Research Center, has extensively studied Sanger's life and writings.

"She talked about the need for race betterment through controlling these weeds, basically undesirable people," Ludwig told CBN News.

Singing Sanger's Praise While Ignoring Her History

In 1939, after opening another clinic in Harlem, the birth control activist launched the Negro Project, an initiative supported by black leaders such as civil rights activist W.E.B Dubois.

Critics claim the program used the pretense of better health and family planning for poor blacks in the South as an attempt to limit the black race.

Ludwig says some on the left grapple with Sanger's past and how to interpret her legacy.

"They know when she writes about weeds, they know it's repulsive," explained Ludwig. "They know it's disgusting. "The left will never abandon Margaret Sanger because she's the foundation of so many of their views," he continued.

Sanger once shared her vision for a preferred race at a women's branch of the Ku Klux Klan, writing in page 366 of her autobiography, "Always, to me, any aroused group was a good group."

Despite those views, liberals praise Sanger's work while ignoring her history.

Hillary Clinton: "I Am Really in Awe of Her"

In 2009, Hillary Clinton received Planned Parenthood's Margaret Sanger award. During an acceptance speech, she praised the group's founder.

"I admire Margaret Sanger enormously, her courage, her tenacity, her vision," said Clinton. "I am really in awe of her," she continued.

Ryan Bomberger, the founder of the pro-life group Radiance Foundation, says abortion proponents are working to clean up Sanger's past and what she stood for.

"They have to reinvent her every time they talk about her in order to justify their celebration of her," explained Bomberger.

Abortion Industry Insiders "Trained" to Overlook Sanger's Racist Views

Former Planned Parenthood director Abby Johnson said those inside the abortion industry are trained to overlook Sanger's racist views.

"They gave you an answer like, 'Well, I mean yes Margaret Sanger was a racist but everybody was a racist back then.' "You accept it because she is your hero and she has to be your hero and you cannot question Planned Parenthood," said Johnson.

In 1997 Steven Mosher of the Population Research Institute wrote about the push to repackage Margaret Sanger in an article in the Wall Street Journal.

"The reason I call it the repackaging of Margaret Sanger is because after the Nazi regime destroyed the legitimacy of eugenics forever, they then went back and said, 'Oh she was just an early feminist. She was just an early supporter of family planning,'" said Mosher.

He went on to say, "No, she wasn't. No, she was a supporter of giving IQ tests to people. She was in favor of using those IQ tests to determine who should be sterilized and who should have children."

In a response, titled "The Demonization of Margaret Sanger," Alexander Sanger, her grandson and president of Planned Parenthood at the time, called Mosher's editorial unfair. In the same piece, Esther Katz, director of NYU's Margaret Sanger Papers Project, claimed evidence revealing, "...Sanger did not rationalize her support for birth control on racist grounds, that she never advocated genocidal policies aimed at racial, ethnic or religious groups, and that she, in fact, believed access to birth control would benefit, not eliminate minority populations."

Dr. Katz turned down our request for an interview, writing, "Our goal hasalways been to offer complete, accurate, and accessible access to the full body of her writings I believe her words and deeds, accurately represented, speak for themselves."

In 1942, Margaret Sanger's American Birth Control League became Planned Parenthood, which has moved to fulfill its founder's goals, helped greatly by the US Supreme Court decision in Roe versus Wade.

"Under the veil of deceit and deception, 60 plus million babies have not been born because they were aborted legally since '73," said Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "One-third of that population belonged to the African American community."

It is a frightening and telling number given that blacks make up only 13 percent of the US population.

Dan Gainor of the Media Research Center says that Sanger's true mission remains alive and well throughout today's abortion industry.

"Just look at the maps, see where the abortion facilities are, they are near places where people are marginalized, people are poor, people are a minority and that's their target market," said Gainor.

Because of allies in the media and academia, Gainor also points out how speech from conservatives and others about Sanger's past, Planned Parenthood practices, and abortion is often classified as hate speech.

He said, "There is nothing as close to a sacrament in the media as abortion. It is a holy writ that abortion is protected. And anybody who comes out against it, any organization, any business, anybody, the media swarm."

And so does social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

"Facebook's new oversight board and this is really concerning, has four co-chairs," explained Gainor. "They're going to be the appeals board for content. One of the four oversight boards is on the board of a pro-abortion group. There are no pro-lifers."

Conservatives say it's also a problem that exists on college campuses across the country.

"I remember at Harvard, they laughed when I was talking about the history of eugenics and they said that doesn't matter," said Bomberger. "Planned Parenthood is not like it was in Margaret Sanger days."

Those who oppose her views say that is not true and are committed to exposing her past for future generations.

"Unfortunately, they've been very effective in recasting who Margaret Sanger is. But we keep on speaking the truth. That's why we're a thorn in their side," said Bomberger.

Trump criticized for praising ‘good bloodlines’ of Henry Ford, who promoted anti-Semitism – USA TODAY

President Donald Trump took heat on social media for praising the "good bloodlines" of Ford Motor Co. founder Henry Ford, who had a history of promoting anti-Semitic views.

"Thecompany foundedbya man named Henry Ford good bloodlines, good bloodlines if you believe in that stuff. You got good blood," Trump said Thursday during a tour of a Ford plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

"Henry Ford was an anti-Semite and one of America's staunchest proponents of eugenics. The President should apologize," Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt wrote on Twitterin response to a reporter's post about Trump's remarks.

Former White House ethics chief Walter Shaub denounced Trump's comments as "gaslit dog whistling" as the term bloodlines is often used in eugenics.

Ford published a set of anti-Semitic pamphlets called, "The International Jew."He alsospread conspiracy theories through his newspaper the Dearborn Independent.

The Henry Ford museum describes how Ford "saw Jews present in everything that he viewed as modern and distasteful" including the First World War, jazz, and short skirts. Ford used the network of Ford dealerships across the country to distribute the Dearborn Independent, building the newspaper to a circulation of 900,000 in 1926.

Ford apologized for the articles and closed the newspaper in 1927 after being sued for defamation byattorney Aaron Sapiro, a target of anti-Semitic attacks bythe Dearborn Independent.

Ford, however, accepted an award, the Grand Cross of the German Eagle, from Nazi Germany in 1938.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

More: Ford 'encouraged' Trump to wear mask during factory tour, but it came off for the cameras

William Clay Ford Jr., executive chairman of Ford Motor Co. and the great-grandson of Henry Ford, had attended the tour and had urged Trump to wear a mask during his visit.

"Bill Ford encouraged President Trump to wear a mask when he arrived," the company said in the statement. "He wore a mask during a private viewing of three Ford GTs from over the years. The President later removed the mask for the remainder of the visit."

BILL COTTERELL | How to assess candidates gaffes – St. Augustine Record

Posted: at 12:45 am

We can all agree that Joe Biden made a horrifying error probably his worst, hardly his first when he said any black voters who are undecided between himself and President Trump aint black.

The former vice president and soon-to-be Democratic presidential nominee quickly apologized. Biden said he didnt mean to take black votes for granted or suggest anyones political choices should be dictated by their ethnicity.

Major figures in his own party, black and white, rallied around him. The Trump campaign turned the gaffe to its advantage, accusing Biden and the Democrats of racism.

U.S. Rep. Val Demings of Orlando, one of the black women among Bidens vice-presidential prospects, expressed surprise at the nerve and gall of Trump whipping out the ol race card on anyone. Theres a cliche in politics about being called ugly by a toad.

But as the campaign heats up in the summer, it would be good to consider what we call a gaffe as part of the political landscape. The media have to report them, although Trump will claim his two-fisted style is purposely twisted to sound offensive while the media downplay Biden blunders.

Whether in a presidential race or a little city commission contest, we ought to consider the source. Did the speaker make an unfortunate slip, an oafish attempt at humor, or to be casual and down-home with an audience? Or does an offensive remark fit well with a lifetime of insensitivity, political cynicism, or racial, sexist or religious bigotry.

When George Wallace promised segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever in 1963, it wasnt a gaffe. It was how he ran his campaign and wanted to govern. When Spiro Agnew showed his boorish insensitivity in 1968, he was showing who he really was.

But when Jimmy Carter used the term ethnic purity in 1976, he wasnt making some coded appeal to eugenics, he just made a really bad choice of words. In a debate that year, President Ford said there was no soviet domination of Eastern Europe; he meant to say the people of Poland dont accept Kremlin control, but in an instant a president put himself on the level of a former Georgia governor in foreign affairs.

Sometimes, a word choice thats not offensive that wouldnt mean anything for some other candidate might bite a candidate like Biden. During debates last year, he referred to parents honing childrens learning by, among other things, turning on the record player at home.

Record player? Harmless in itself, his word choice re-enforced questions that maybe the 77-year-old candidate is living in an episode of Happy Days.

More important for Biden, he referred to then-Sen. Barack Obama as clean and articulate in 2008. Thats not cool, but a review of Bidens 50-year record on social justice earns him some indulgence.

Thats what we should look at when candidates misspeak -- what theyve stood for throughout their careers. On the campaign trail, speaking casually or doing interviews, candidates cant gaffe things up too badly they just use a simple three-step process for deciding whether to say something flippant about race:

1.Consider how supporters will react.

2.Consider how opponents will react.

3.Then dont.

Bill Cotterell is a retired Tallahassee Democrat capitol reporter.

Will 2020 be the year the tin foil hats are vindicated? – Cowichan Valley Citizen

Posted: at 12:45 am

Will 2020 be the year the tin foil hats are vindicated?

A global coup is unfolding before our very eyes

Will 2020 be the year of the global communist takeover that the tin foil hats have been warning of? The blueprint for world domination is detailed in the UNs Agenda 21 and has four main objectives.

Depopulation: Greatly reduce world population to a more sustainable number and restrict human reproduction.

Globalization: Global militarized police state to enforce political, economic, environmental and medical totalitarianism.

Digitization: Eliminate cash; implement a global digital currency and Universal Basic Income using implantable microchips and a 5G-control grid.

De-carbonization: Eliminate fossil fuels, return rural land to nature by concentrating populations in smart cities. Ban travel, farming and property ownership.

The 120-ton granite monument known as the Georgia Guidestones is inscribed with guidelines for a new age of reason that echoes the same philosophies as those behind Agenda 21. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 and Guide reproduction wisely are the main principles of eugenics, which promotes selective breeding of the nobility and forced abortions and sterilization of the working class. Be not a cancer on the earth Leave room for nature is the Malthusian philosophy that inspired the eugenics movement in the late 1800s; the idea that famines, plagues, wars and birth control are necessary to prevent overpopulation from depleting global resources.

Remember Greta and the Green New Deal? Again we see the globalization, de-carbonization and depopulation themes of Agenda 21. Too bad that racist Trump with his conspiracy theories ruined all of that. But then, just in time to squash Trumps re-election, along comes Bill Gates and The New World Normal to get Agenda 21 back on track.

While the world is under military martial law with travel bans in place, 5G is rolled out, the economy collapses, small business and the middle class are decimated and many become dependent on government handouts. We must learn to work, school, shop and socialize online. Because handling cash spreads the virus, we will need digital currency and an implant to use it.

But dont worry, Bill Gates has been preparing for this pandemic for ages. He already has plans to inject the entire world population with his quantum dot digital tattoos, so he will know whos taken his vaccine. If you refuse, well, youll just be quarantined. Forever. Coincidently, the Book of Revelations warns of a time when the Antichrist forces every man, woman and child to take the mark of the beast and without it no one shall buy or sell.

Now, those of us who have done our homework have tried to warn about the globalist agenda and their deceptive modus operandi, only to be insulted and ridiculed for our efforts. But now that the globalist wolves have thrown off their sheeps clothing and its time to for us to say, we told you so, will the sheep still deny the global coup unfolding before our very eyes?

Letters to the editor: The future is our choice – Taft Midway Driller

Who among us has the divine right to decide who lives or who dies? Who has the moral authority to determine what is good, fair, or just for our nation? Who has the ultimate choice to privatize the land, the people, and the natural resources for private gain? Since 1886, corporate capitalist, our new world pirates, claim they do.

After seizing power over our Constitutional mandates, corporate capitalist established a new story and made it legal. Negative narratives, such as Darwins 1887 eugenics theory survival of the fittest and Keynesians post war economics, used legalized fiction to usurp the peoples authority. For over a century, our Constitutional rights have been ignored and suppressed while fear and hate are glorified and normalized. The colonial mind set continues to shape todays political choices with party line rhetoric and inhumane social abuses.

Consequently, Americas history is shadowed with personal prejudice, social bigotry, and corporate greed. The notion that federal and state taxes support education and programs that promote the general welfare, has proven to be false. Truth is, we are no more than economic fodder for those who unjustly declare elite status over social choices and economic decisions.

Since humanitys mythical fall from grace, our collective task has been to wake up, dispel the toxic levels of fear and dis-information, and reclaim our personal and social power. Instead of becoming mindless zombies, out of sync and mis-aligned with a free and just society, we can cultivate our divine right to live a moral humane life. Evidence shows without freedom to share our unique and authentic existence with honor, respect and responsibility, we lose our mind at the gates of hell. By choosing to live and let live, we cultivate equanimity beyond any nefarious policy or artificial inhibitors. That future is our ultimate choice.

Easy Investing Secrets to an Early Retirement – May 27, 2020 – Yahoo Finance

Building sufficient financial resources to retire early may sound like a dream, but making that dream come true is not as hard as it may sound. The main thing is simply to save more money each month. No big deal, right? Well ...

Typically, advisors peg 15% to 20% of total income saved each month as a goal - but if you want to retire earlier, you probably have to ratchet that number up to 40% or 50% of your income. Not a feat easily accomplished when you review your take into account that a good portion of your paycheck goes to essential, non-negotiable lifestyle items. However, if you are willing to make some serious lifestyle changes and sacrifices, it's possible.

This concept of intensive saving for an early retirement has spawned a movement called FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early). Followers of FIRE strive to save up to three-quarters of their income, and make other adjustments too: live in small homes, walk to work each day, practice strict diet plans, and more. Even if this lifestyle may sound a bit unreasonable, the ideas behind it are worth considering.

The first point is to adhere to the key principles of long-term investing, including developing a diversified portfolio that includes stocks with various styles, sizes, sectors and regions.

To accelerate the retirement investment cycle, you can construct a portfolio designed with more risk - and the potential for higher returns - but it should still be appropriately diversified to protect against larger than average market drawdowns that can be difficult to recover from and ruin any chance to accomplish your early retirement goal. There are numerous ways to diversify a portfolio, and how you do so should depend on your age, your risk tolerance, your growth and income needs, and your long-term goals.

After accelerating your savings and setting up an ongoing plan, invest your savings into your portfolio at the earliest opportunity. Try not to attempt to time the market. Stay put, and let the compounding characteristics of the markets do its work to help grow your retirement wealth exponentially over time.

You may want to look at growth stocks with attributes acceptable for retirement investing like low beta, strong earnings estimates, positive sales growth, and expected future growth.

The Zacks Rank routinely recognizes lower risk growth retirement portfolio picks, and here are a few that may be worth considering: Global Medical REIT (GMRE), Clearway Energy (CWEN) and Farmers National Banc (FMNB). These growth stocks have strong Zacks Ranks and a beta of 1 or lower, with earnings and sales growth of at least 5% over the past 5 years.
