American violence in the time of coronavirus (Armed and contagious) High Country News Know the West – High Country News
Posted: May 23, 2020 at 4:43 am
In both An Indigenous Peoples History of the United States and Loaded: A Disarming History of the Second Amendment, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz digs into the roots of violence buried deep within the countrys history. From the election of Donald Trump to the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, American violence has been on unprecedented display. The pandemic has likewise exposed some of the nations starkest disparities, not only in justice and health-related issues, but also along racial and class divides. Now, as states consider relaxing stay-at-home orders in response to the economic crisis health restrictions have led to, the country is witnessing the armed occupation of state capitals, emotionally charged protests and the outright denunciation of science and research.
Dunbar-Ortiz helps put these contemporary events in a historical context. The United States was founded as a capitalist state and an empire on conquered land, with capital in the form of slaves, she writes in Loaded, as she traces violence from the nations founding to today. The capitalist firearms industry was among the first successful corporations. Gun proliferation and gun violence today are among its legacies. This legacy helps explain American gun culture and the conspicuous display of firearms at the COVID-19 reopen protests.
High Country News recently spoke with Dunbar-Ortiz about what these events have to say about the nations propensity for violence, tolerance of white supremacy and the push for profits over the health of the populace. The following conversation has been edited for length.
High Country News: Do you think the armed protest at the Michigan Statehouse was allowed to happen because the perpetrators were white and by extension not considered a threat to those in authority?
Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz:Its complicated. No one can imagine an all-armed Black group coming to the Statehouse at all, for anything. They would be killed, massacred. Or lets say Asians, or Native Americans or Latinos. Of course, its white privilege. But what I think is that its not that (those in power) dont see it, its (that) they actually fear the power of these people. Politicians are not stupid, and they know in their hearts when the president of the United States gives practically an order, certainly permission, for these types of people to act, then thats power. Even here in California, theyve come to Sacramento twice. They had an armed protest at City Hall in San Francisco. And you really saw our governor here stepping back and saying, Well, yeah, maybe some of the smaller counties, it may not apply to them. Its really scary, because it works.
HCN: This notion that certain segments of the population should die for the economy is striking. How is the acceptance of mass casualties whether of Indigenous peoples, children in school shootings, or the elderly and immunocompromised during a pandemic part of the American psyche?
RDO: U.S. capitalism has always had to have surplus labor half of the people unemployed in order to keep wages down. But with technology and the end of industrialized mass labor, theyre no longer needed by the system. With mechanized agriculture, theyre not needed as agrarian workers. Back in the 80s, it was almost uncontroversial when Earth First!, the most radical of the environmental movements, the most militant, came up with this anti-immigration thing at the border because of overpopulation the idea that the border should be tightened, taking that reactionary stance for the environment rather than reviewing how capitalism works and attacking the kings of capital.
The practice of eliminating people is baked into the countrys founding, Constitution and military, so of course it worms its way into everyones mind that it is OK to just eliminate a whole group of people, so more white farmers can have land. At the core of the country, its always there as a possibility, not just for people who have bad immune systems or are old or who are homeless. This idea to just get rid of them. Herd immunity it shouldnt be used that way to cull out the older people and those who are at risk, and that will be a good thing. But you know, of course, for Native people and Latinos and most African Americans, most people really revere their elders as sources of knowledge and teaching. I realize, though, that that has changed a lot, because I think these arguments that a lot of the scientists were giving on the national level, and the governors, that you have to do these things to protect your grandparents. I dont think that really counts for anything when people are so broken down and (culturally) separated from their family.
HCN: When you look back over time, from the founding of the United States to today, do you see variations in that reliance on violence or death, or does it just take new forms?
But instead of organizing against that system of capitalism, they are easily redirected because of white supremacy to attack the immigrants coming in and taking their jobs. Of course, these are jobs they wont do anyway.
RDO: The advent of capitalism came with the looting of the Americas, that accumulation of wealth, and then the founding of capitalist states, and with the Industrial Revolution which, in the United States, was based on slavery. When slaves freed themselves, Reconstruction didnt work, and they continued to be necessary agrarian labor. Capitalist states kept importing immigrants to keep surplus labor.
They really worried, after World War II, when so many young men were killed from every country in Europe. In Western Europe, they were absolutely frantic, because the workers could demand such high wages. They could bargain. Thats why, in Germany and France and Britain, they have such good unions, free health-care systems. They won all of that because there was no surplus labor. And then those countries started importing Turkish labor, Kurdish labor, African labor, to create surplus labor. Thats how capitalism works: Its only real profits come from what the wages are for workers.
With the technological shift from industrial production although its still going on; its just exported to China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, where theyre still working factories in the United States surplus labor is no longer needed for profits. So much of it is finance or specialized or highly technical that the unemployed of every class, especially the white and unemployed, are the most worried. But instead of organizing against that system of capitalism, they are easily redirected because of white supremacy to attack the immigrants coming in and taking their jobs. Of course, these are jobs they wont do anyway. Theyre not going to work in meatpacking plants and the fields of California. But the system is so good at diverting their attention to people of color as the enemy to get rid of them, and everything will be all right.
HCN: That seems like it would inevitably lead to more conflict.
RDO: That is a problem, and its a permanent problem, even with the overthrow of capitalism. What do people do who are so work-oriented? I know we used to have dreams, when I was a young activist, of a world without so much work, where we could work two hours a day and still get wages. This would be the kind of socialism that works for peoples good and not for profits, so people find a lot of things to do when theyre not on the job, or spending most of their lives in jobs that they dont like. Theres a necessity to have things to do. They feel that purpose, but mainly its that you have to have that in order to eat, survive or feed your family, not because you love the work.

FIRST ON CBS7: Open Carry Texas VP threatening to come back to Odessa to "stand up to this ol’ boy" Sheriff Griffis – CBS7 News
Posted: at 4:43 am
ODESSA, Tx (KOSA) -- In a video recently posted on San Angelo LIVE!, the vice president of Open Carry Texas threatens to come back to Odessa next month to "stand up to" Sheriff Mike Griffis.
David Amad says he and 150 men will return on June 6th.
Amad is angry that Ector County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a number of men protesting the governor's closing of the bar Big Daddy Zane's wearing body armor and carrying semi-automatic weapons.
Sheriff Griffis says the men were only trying to terrorize people, not protest that the bar couldn't open, and that's why he had them arrested.
He was emphatic during a news conference the next day that the arrests had nothing to do with Second Amendment Rights.
Amad says the protest will be peaceful and that if anyone breaks the law, they will surrender peacefully.
But he also warned that if protesters dont believe theyve broken the law and are arrested, Sheriff Griffis and his deputies should be prepared.

The Harvard University Center for Integrated Quantum Materials (CIQM), in partnership with The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), hosted a virtual workshop in March to discuss curriculum and educator activities that will help K-12 students engage with quantum information science.
The workshop resulted in alist of key conceptsfor future quantum information science (QIS) learners. The document provides a concise list of nine basic concepts, including quantum entanglement, communication, and sensing. The list is first step towards the development of quantum education curricula and empowering educators to teach quantum concepts in K-12 classrooms.
Quantum information science and technology aims to create systems for quantum sensing, quantum communication using interconnected networks, and quantum computation, said Robert M. Westervelt, the Mallinckrodt Professor of Applied Physics and of Physics at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Director of CIQM.Our most important role is to engage young students in the field, because they will develop quantum technology in the future.
The document was the product of over three weeks of intensive deliberations among a group of university and industry researchers, secondary school and college educators, and representatives from educational and professional organizations. The participants represented a set of convergent disciplines that contribute to QIS today: physics, computer sciences, materials sciences, engineering, chemistry, and mathematics. Document development efforts were led by experts from the Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center (IQUIST), theUniversity of Chicago,Georgetown Universityand theMuseum of Science, Boston.
"American leadership in quantum information science depends on a strong quantum workforce, said Jake Taylor, a Harvard alumnus who serves as OSTPs Assistant Director for Quantum Information Science. We're thrilled to begin this important work helping prepare the next generation of quantum learners."
"The future of fundamental research and education is in our hands. This impactful effort will empower the broad society to be included, and to actively participate in both efforts and benefits of the quantum era, said Sean Jones, Acting Assistant Director at the NSF's Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

Nasa discovers parallel universe where time runs backwards? Know the truth – Business Standard
Posted: at 4:42 am
Twitter and other social media platforms are abuzz with the so-called 'parallel universe' that Nasa has discovered. According to the claims, Nasa has detected a parallel universe in Antarctica, where time runs backwards. While this has certainly made a whole lot of people excited, in reality this is far from the truth.
What is a parallel universe?
In quantum mechanics, parallel universe is theorised as existing alongside our own, although undetectable.
How did the claims on Nasa's discovery of parallel universe come about?
The recent reports claiming that there is evidence of a parallel universe appear to be based on ANITA findings that are at least a couple of years old.
A science magazine had published a feature, discussing some anomalous results coming from neutrino detection experiments in Antarctica, and what these could mean for a speculative cosmological model that posits there's an antimatter universe extending backwards from the BigBang.
The featured article was then 'curated' by some online media outlets, and the whole issue snowballed and became the talk of the town for the Twitterati.
What were the anomalous detections in Antarctica?
Four years ago, the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment a high-altitude helium balloon with an array of radio antennas, partially funded by Nasa had spotted a handful of instances of what seemed to be highly energetic neutrinos coming through the Earth. The telescope could spot these neutrinos coming from the space and hitting the ice sheet in Antarctica. ANITA detected these particles, but instead of coming from the space, the neutrinos were found to be coming from the Earth's surface without any source. These detections happened in 2016, then again in 2018, but there was no credible explanation.
Physicists have been working to figure out if these results can be explained with our current models of physics or have something to do with the experimental set-up itself, or if something like parallel universe does exist.
Scientists not ready to call parallel universe a discovery yet
Going by what the scientists have actually said, it's clear that these are exciting times for the astrophysicists trying to find an explanation and future experiments with more exposure and sensitivity will be required to get a clear understanding of the anomaly.
However, people wishing for a parallel universe will have to wait because the evidence is lacking and the scientists are not yet ready to call it a discovery.
What is a neutrino?
A neutrino is a subatomic particle very similar to an electron. But it has no electrical charge and a very small mass, which might even be zero. Neutrinos are one of the most abundant particles in the universe. Because they have very little interaction with matter, they are incredibly difficult to detect.
Here are some Twitter reactions to the claims of parallel universe

Company Hopes to Have Carbon Nanotube COVID-19 Detector Available in June – SciTechDaily

How an atomically thin device could become a biotech breakthrough.
A technology spun from carbon nanotube sensors discovered 20 years ago by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) scientists could one day help health care providers test patients for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.
When Alex Zettl, Marvin Cohen, and their research teams at Berkeley Lab first demonstrated ultrasensitive oxygen sensors devised from carbon nanotubes hollow carbon wires with walls no thicker than an atom they envisioned a broad spectrum of applications, such as gas-leak detectors or air- and water-pollution detectors.
Subsequent studies out of Zettls lab revealed that carbon nanotubes or CNTs could also be used to detect proteins or carbohydrates at the level of single cells for biological and medical applications. CNTs exquisite chemical sensitivity had dramatic life-science implications that could benefit society, Zettl said.
But since Zettl normally investigates atomically thin materials known as nanomaterials for the Department of Energys Novel sp2-Bonded Materials and Related Nanostructures program, his lab is set up for launching exciting new experiments in quantum physics, not new applications for entrepreneurial startups.
So in 2000, Zettl and Cohen, who are both senior faculty scientists in Berkeley Labs Materials Sciences Division and physics professors at UC Berkeley, branched out into the world of commercial spinoffs by co-founding the Emeryville-based biotech company Nanomix Inc. They currently sit on the companys board of directors Zettl participates as an adviser, and Cohen as a member.
Today, the company is one of many U.S. companies vying for FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to deploy new diagnostic tests for COVID-19.
Last month, the company was awarded approximately $570,000 in funding from the Department of Health and Human Services Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to develop disposable cartridges that test for protein traces of the coronavirus known as antigens in nasal swab samples, and for antibodies to the coronavirus in blood samples.
Patient samples loaded onto the cartridges are analyzed by the Nanomix eLab, a handheld testing device the company first developed more than five years ago in response to the Ebola virus epidemic.
The cartridges rely on tiny carbon biosensors modeled after the Zettl and Cohen labs groundbreaking carbon nanotube technology to detect coronavirus antigens during the early stages of a current infection. In addition, the cartridges can test for antibodies the immune system builds up as part of our bodys natural defense mechanism against a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection. The company says the eLab system can produce test results in about 15 minutes.
If granted FDA Emergency Use Authorization, the company hopes to have COVID-19-ready eLab products available for health care providers in June, and to scale up its supply and production capacity to provide hundreds of thousands of test kits, said Nanomix President and CEO David Ludvigson.
The fact that my research could help so many people is very rewarding. Im happy that I was able to contribute in that way, Zettl said.

The world is not as real as we think. – Patheos
Posted: at 4:42 am
I offer here a potpourri of quotations from the very early pages of Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner, Quantum Enigma: Physics Encounters Consciousness, 2d ed. (Oxford and New York: Oxford University Press, 2011), quotations that Im extracting for my notes:
Classical physics explains the world quite well; its just the details it cant handle. Quantum physics handles the details perfectly; its just the world it cant explain. You can see why Einstein was troubled. (7)
When the late Bruce Rosenblum (one of the authors of this book) first proposed a course for liberal arts majors at the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he and his co-author taught, a faculty member objected:
[P]resenting this material to nonscientists is the intellectual equivalent of allowing children to play with loaded guns. (8)
Rosenblum and Kuttner themselves say of their book Quantum Enigma that
it is necessarily a controversial book. However, absolutely nothing we say about quantum mechanics itself is controversial. It is the mystery these results imply beyond the physics that is controversial. For many physicists, this baffling weirdness is best not talked about. Physicists (including ourselves) can be uncomfortable with their discipline encountering something as unphysical as consciousness. Though the quantum facts are not in dispute, the meaning behind those facts, what quantum mechanics tells us about our world, is hotly debated. (8)
An Einstein biographer tells that back in the 1950s a non-tenured faculty member in a physics department would endanger a career by showing any interest in the strange implications of quantum theory. Times are changing. (9)
Among the charms of Quantum Enigma are the anecdotes that it shares:
At a physics conference attended by several hundred physicists (including the two of us), an argument broke out in the discussion period after a talk. (The heated across-the-auditorium debate was reported in the New York Times in December 2005.) One participant argued that because of its weirdness, quantum theory had a problem. Another vigorously denied there was a problem, accusing the first of having missed the point. A third broke in to say, Were just too young. We should wait until 2200 when quantum mechanics is taught in kindergarten. A fourth summarized the argument by saying, The world is not as real as we think. Three of these arguers have Nobel Prizes in Physics, and the fourth is a good candidate for one. (9)

Alternative medical therapies allowed to resume in Dubai – Gulf News
Posted: at 4:41 am
Picture for illustrative purposes: acupuncture Image Credit: Pexels
Dubai: All private health facilities in Dubai will be able to resume most of their alternative medical therapies with immediate effect, except for dental and ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) services which continue to fall in the essential or emergency category only. Health care professionals have welcomed this move as this will provide an economic lifeline to most clinics that have been impacted by the clampdown on elective therapies and procedures in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Complementary Medicine therapies to resume
In a circular dated May 11, sent out to all private health facilities in Dubai the Dubai Health Authority announced the resumption of all Complementary and Alternative Medicines(CAM) such as Ayurveda, naturopathy, Greek, Herbal and Chinese medicine, including those involving needles such as acupuncture.
The circular also announced the resumption of physical therapies such as those offered by chiropractors, osteopathy and osteopaths.
Dental and ENT to continue to be limited to emergency and urgent only
However, in case of Dental and ENT services the circular clearly stated: Visits for ENT and Dental clinics will be limited for emergencies and urgent cases, and according to the assessment of the treating physician, including but not limited to: acute dental pain, severe infections, injuries and trauma, orthodontics, root canals etc.., all other appointments to be postponed where possible, to avoid aerosol generating procedures from dental and ENT treatment for public safety.
A Dubai-based dentist explained that an aerosol affect is created when dentists use high powered devices that require compressed air, such as ultrasonic scalres dental handpeices, high speed instruments used to disnfect a tooth during a root canal treatment. The aersols which are a mixture of the debris of microorganisms from the oral cavity of the patient and tiny droplets of water from the high pressured devices get airborne and remain suspended in air for some time. These aerosols can pose risk of airborne diseases to the clinician, staff and other patients as well. With several studies pointing out the possible airborne transmission of the Sars-Cov-2 virus, any procedure which creates an aersol affect has to be carried out only in emergency and urgent cases.
High level of compliance to sanitsation and hygiene
The activities have been restarted with the caveat that all the medical facilities will continue to observe the current guidelines on maintaining a high standard of industrial sanitasation and hygiene with special focus on patient receptions, operation theatres and elevators and document their daily disinfection operation on a daily basis as per the the protocols set by the Dubai Municipality. All health professionals must adhere to the precautionary measures for preventing spread of infection such as wearing proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) at all times, practising hand hyiene, taking patients in by appointment only, having patients wear masks and gloves and making sure that adequate social distancing is maintained in the facility.
The DHA will subject all facilities to regular rounds of inspection to make sure that there is compliance to all aspects of guidelines and protocols.

University spinoff receives $750K to develop iron-based alternative to gadolinium contrasts – Health Imaging
Posted: at 4:41 am
Since we started the company in 2017, concerns in medicine have only increased over the gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents available today, Bradford La Salle, co-founder and president of Ferric Contrast, said in the announcement. Doctors and patients want new options."
Theres been a number of endeavors investigating the possibility of a gadolinium-free MRI contrast agent, including a University of Texas at Dallas project utilizing organic radical contrast agents.
Janet Morrow, PhD, a co-founder of Ferric and UB chemistry professor, says the interest in iron-based compounds is largely due to the fact that the element is found naturally in the body, unlike gadolinium.
Iron is regulated, recycled and stored in humans, making it more likely that the body can handle any accumulated iron, Morrow, who also serves as Ferric Contrasts chief scientific officer, added in the statement. We have developed iron complexes that are highly soluble and stabilized in the trivalent high-spin form.

Coronavirus related conspiracy theories spread across the internet – The Yucatan Times
Posted: at 4:41 am
Depending on who you talk to, the current coronavirus pandemic might be the natural product of evolution, the result ofa lab accidentor a biological weapon designed by the Chinese. Lockdown measures to impose social distancing restrictions are responsible measures designed to protect public safety or theyre part of a Democratic Party plot to destroy the economy in order to diminish President Trumps chances of reelection in November. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nations top infectious disease specialist, is either a respected medical professional ordevious member of the deep statewho is using the coronavirus (which he may or may not have helped create) to control the public through amandatory vaccination.
And those are just some of the narratives that are spreading within the United States.
In countries around the world, equally implausible ideas are circulating, derived in part from their particular political and historical situations, but also cross-pollinating with a wide array of conspiracy theories, misinformation and state-sponsored content, ranging from blatant propaganda to more subtle disinformation campaigns. In some cases, the dearth of verifiable information has resulted in the spread of misinformation by fairly reputable and well-intentioned sources. The coronavirus infodemic, however, has allowed a host of malign actors from the Russian government to domestic extremists to scam artists peddling bogus cures to exploit existing societal fissures for their own political or personal gain.
All of that just contributes to this massive, unstoppable flow of information that would be impossible to contend with even for the most resilient society, said Nina Jankowicz, a fellow at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.
In fact, Jankowicz told Yahoo News that other than in countries such as Turkmenistan, where the government has imposeda complete clampdownon any and all information related to the coronavirus, I cant imagine a country that would have no proliferation of conspiracy theories or disinformation at this time.
Disinformation feeds on anxiety and promotes emotional and irrational responses. I think its a common misconception that disinformation creates some sort of new feeling in people, Jankowicz says. Often its really weaponizing preexisting feelings, or certainly amplifying them.
So the anti-vax groups, for instance, are going to be more likely to buy into this narrative about the vaccine being somehow an instrument for global control. The folks who are distrustful of the United States, whether thats in the Middle East, or in China, or Russia, are going to be pawns of their nations propaganda machines.
You can see that phenomenon at work in internet metadata. In aninterview with Politicolast month, Joel Meyer of Predata, a predictive analytics firm, said that since the beginning of the pandemic, his firm has observed an increase in traffic from Persian and Hindi-language internet users to websites that are critical of Western medicine and promote alternative healing methods, including unproven supplements. At the same time, Meyer said that in European languages, including French, German and Italian, anti-vaxxer attention has really spiked recently.
Were seeing interest rise to unprecedented levels in alternative medicines and treatments, he told Politico, concluding that, based on the analytics, that type of disinformation is sinking in, its having an effect.
