The Horror and Speculative Fiction Ive Been Reading To Distract Myself from IRL Horrors – Book Riot
Posted: at 12:50 pm
My parents think Im morbid. My friends think Im a masochist. But the truth of the matter is that Im just neurotic. And the best way to distract myself from my various neuroses is to bury myself in fictional horror.
Since the global pandemic has led to ever-more-restrictive social distancing measures, I must admit that Ive lost my taste for feminist manifestas and cultural critiques. In fact, the only books that have been able to hold my interest for any significant length of time have been works of horror and speculative fiction.
As this time of isolation is likely to continue for quite some time, I wanted to share with you some of the books Ive been enjoying, and others that Im looking forward to reading as a bulwark against overwhelming anxiety and utter boredom.
I know this book came out nearly a year ago, but I only just discovered it recently. Possibly because its labeled as sci-fi and I dont read a lot of sci-fi unless it plays around with time travel and the multiverse. This collection of nine speculative short stories is a delight, offering up to readers time travel and alternate universes, yes, but also questions around second chances, free will, and other complicated conundrums.
This bookabout a woman who goes missing and then returns two years later somehow changedsuper creeped me out. Harrison does an amazing job of slow-motion upping the tension in a way that has me questioning the authenticity of the horrors she hints at. Is there something supernatural going on? Am I jumping to conclusions? Its brilliant because my own uncertainty mirrors the mental gymnastics performed by the characters themselves. In addition to the horror themes, you can also look forward to the uncomfortably authentic commentary on female friendships.

I recently read an egalley of KingfishersThe Hollow Places, and it was so! much! fun! But its not out until October and I dont want to torture you. BUT! Reading The Hollow Places led me to seek out her other horror novel, The Twisted Ones, which came out late last year, and it was also a pretty good time. InThe Twisted Ones, a young woman agrees to clean out her late grandmothers cabin in the middle of nowhere, and what she finds is more than she bargained for. In addition to the supernatural delights in her books, I enjoy Kingfishers characters. They always seem to have a great sense of humor and, even when faced with the sorts of things that should make their minds snap, it is this sensibility that keeps them together, and also helps cut the tension for readers.
Speaking of comic horror, no one does it better than Grady Hendrix. Both Horrorstor and We Sold Our Souls were a good time, but I absolutely fell in love with My Best Friends Exorcism. So Im looking forward to reading his latest, which just came out this month. Its about a womens book club that is forced to go up against a mysterious newcomer in townwho may or may not be more than just your average terrible, monstrous human.
I assume Ill still be stuck homeschooling my 5-year-old in May, so Ill really need this debut from Thomas, a gothic thriller about a special school in the middle of the woods that may or may not be harboring a dangerous secret and a questionable agenda.I am so very much here for this.
I hope youre all enjoying our new dystopian reality, as much as you possibly can. At least we have our books, right?

Stephen King Stories We Want To See In Castle Rock Season 3 – Screen Rant
Posted: at 12:50 pm
Castle Rock on Hulu is jam-packed with characters and events from the Stephen King universe, so what's left for season 3? The show hasfeatured references to everything from The Shining and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption in the first season to Misery and 'Salem's Lotin the second. Nevertheless, there's still plenty of source material to explore.
Castle Rock premiered on Hulu onJuly25,2018, with a second season the following year. It features places, characters, and events inspired by the works of Stephen King. Plus, it's overflowing with easter eggs, some overt and others harder and spot, such as the Masten House and Annie Wilkes. It also features many popular actors who have played significant roles in other King adaptations throughout the years. Some of these actors include Bill Skarsgard, Sissy Spacek, and Tim Robbins.

Fans of the show have been nervous because Hulu hasn't announced if itwill do a third season yet, buta lot of people would like to see the horror anthology series renewed. Following the series' format with a fresh, yet interconnected, story each season,Castle Rock could take inspiration for any number of Stephen King works.
Stephen King's multiverse includes a vast library of work to choose from. Some of King's biggest novels set in Castle Rock are The Dead Zone, The Dark Half, and Needful Things. Certain characters from these novels have already made appearances in the show, but some others that could crop up from these works alone are Johnny Smith with his clairvoyant powers from The Dead Zone, the famous writer and recovering alcoholic eerily similar to King himself, Thad Beaumont from The Dark Half, or even the charming and sinister shop proprietor from Needful Things, Leland Gaunt. A more recent addition to King's stories set in Castle Rock is Gwendy's Button Box, which he co-wrote with Richard Chizmar. Introducing Gwendy and the strange box that is given to her would be very interesting.
Even more interesting, however, would be the appearance of the man in black himself, also known by many other names, including Randall Flagg. Flagg is famous for appearing in The Stand after a deadly flu virus wipes out most of the human population, as well as in the Dark Tower series as Roland Deschain's rival. This would bring more of what is perhaps King's most defining work into the series, tying Castle Rock to Midworld. References to the Dark Tower have, after all, already appeared a few times in the series, such as the existence of alternate realities in the multiverse in season 1 and the Masten House from 'Salem's Lot that is directly connected to the Dark Tower series. Many fans would be thrilled to see more of these elements included in Castle Rock season 3.
