Katie Sowers’ ascension to full-time coaching job with 49ers is more progress – Yahoo Sports
Posted: August 16, 2017 at 6:31 pm
For the second time in NFL history, a woman will be on a teams coaching staff through the regular season.
Katie Sowers, who was coaching wide receivers during an internship with the San Francisco 49ers, was extended to a full-time role for this season by the team. She is the second full-time female assistant in NFL history. Kathryn Smith was a special teams quality control coach with the Buffalo Bills last season (she wasnt retained for this season after the Bills had an offseason coaching change).
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan explained that Sowers did such a good job during her internship, the team wanted to keep her after her internship was over. Simple as that.
She came in and worked with the receivers and did as good of a job as anyone Ive had in the internship, Shanahan said, according to CSN Bay Area. We loved having her around. She was eager to learn it, she has played professional football in a womens league in the United States for a while and shes passionate about it.
With Jen Welter, who was an assistant coaching intern with the Arizona Cardinals in 2015, Smith last year and Bowers this season, a common refrain was that players respect any coach who can help them get better.
Katie is a baller. One-hundredpercent, 49ers receiver Marquise Goodwin said on KNBR 680s Murph & Mac Show, according to CSN Bay Area. She understands the game. She is very familiar with the game. She played in a womens league.
It may be a little different, but she definitely has the attitude that it takes to be in that room. She brings a great vibe and she understands. Im happy that shes on staff.
Sowers shared the news on her Facebook page, with a positive message for anyone. She said believing in yourself is only part of chasing a dream, but also dreams are achieved by first finding someone who sees your worth and value, regardless of your gender, and takes the necessary steps to clear a path, even on the path less traveled. For Sowers, that someone was Scott Pioli, a longtime NFL executive who is now the assistant general manager of the Atlanta Falcons. Sowers had an internship with the Falcons last season. Atlantas offensive coordinator was Shanahan.
I wanted to share with my friends and family that I have accepted a season long coaching position with the San Francisco

Sowers being hired is a positivestep for women in the NFL. Perhaps were not too far from a female coordinator, and then perhaps at some point a female head coach. That sounds like a big step, but a few years ago many probably wondered if wed see someone like Sowers or Smith reach the heights they have in the NFL coaching profession.

Terrebonne drops Hall of Fame match to Ascension Episcopal – Daily Comet
Posted: at 6:31 pm
By Perry PitreSports Correspondent
A young Terrebonne Lady Tiger team took on the runner up in last years Division V state tournament, who returned all their players, dropping a 3-0 match to the Ascension Episcopal Lady Gators at Tuesdays Hall of Fame match in Houma.
The games proceeds will go the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Numerous such games will played around the state, including Mondays matches at the Thibodaux Regional Medical Center featuring Assumption, E.D. White Catholic, H.L. Bourgeois and Vandebilt Catholic, leading up the 2017 season opener on Aug. 28.
The scores in each game were almost identical, though the games took on different complexions.
Game 1 the Lady Gators dominate from start to finish, taking a 25-16 win.
The second game was tight at the outset with the score tied at 7 early. But two 5-0 runs by Ascension Episcopal made it 16-10. Terrebonne closed to within five at 17-12, but another 5-0 run put the game away for the Lady Gators, 25-14.
Game 3 started tight and stayed that way, with Ascension Episcopal holding a 10-9 lead. But yet another 5-0 run gave Ascension Episcopal a cushion, the Lady Tigers could not overcome. Terrebonne closed to 17-14, but the Lady Gators finished strong, scoring eight of the last nine for a 25-15 sweep.
(Tuesday) we saw a lot of nerves from our girls. Terrebonne coach Craig Hamner said. We have a lot of new starters. (Ascension Episcopal) has the experience, and they dont get rattled. We stayed close early, but they just pulled away. We had a lot of mistakes, a lot of serving errors, a lot of hitting errors. They have to learn to get over the nerves, and thats why we played this game.
Ascension Episcopal had a distinct height advantage over Terrebonne, which Hamner said is going to occur all season.
A lot of teams will, Hamner said. We dont have a very big team, so everyone is going to be bigger than us. So were going to have to be scrappy and were going to have to play smart, and were just going to have to do the little things right.
RIVERSIDE ACADEMY 3, SOUTH LAFOURCE 1
At Houma, Riverside used strong net play and a bevy of well place shots to outduel the Lady Tarpons.
The Lady Rebels took the first game 25-18, thanks in large part to a 7-0 run that turned a 10-9 game into a 17-9 game.
Game 2 was tighter as the Lady Tarpons seemed to find their game. But another 7-0 Riverside run was too much to overcome as the Lady Rebels won by three, 25-22
South Lafourche finally got their own run in Game 3, scoring the games last seven points for a 25-18 win.
But the Lady Rebels came back in Game 4, scoring eight of the games last ten points for a 25-17 win.
Defense is going to be our focus, South Lafourche coach Jamie Lerille said. Our offense was good. We just need to be sure we pick up the ball when the other team is hitting.

Voyager probes fulfill 40 years of space exploration – CNN International
Posted: at 6:31 pm
NASA's Voyager 1 and 2 are still exploring the outer solar system and continue to communicate with us on Earth daily.
The identical spacecrafts launched a couple of weeks apart from one another. Voyager 2 left Earth on August 20, and even though it launched first, it got its name because it was expected to reach Jupiter and Saturn after Voyager 1.
According to NASA, few missions can match the many achievements of the Voyager spacecrafts during their 40-year journey. Voyager 1 became the first spacecraft and only human-made object to have entered interstellar space. Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have flown by Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Even though the Voyagers will not come near a star until 40,000 years from now, together, they have improved our understanding of the characteristics of the atmosphere of Jupiter. They also discovered the first active volcanoes beyond Earth at Jupiter's moon Io; hints of a subsurface ocean on Jupiter's moon Europa; encountered Saturn's largest moon Titan, where data showed a thick Earth-like atmosphere; found the icy moon Miranda at Uranus and spotted icy-cold geysers on Neptune's moon Triton.
Though they are incredibly far from Earth -- Voyager 1 is almost 13 billion miles away and Voyager 2 almost 11 billion miles -- they continue to communicate with NASA daily, sending back observations on our solar system. The significance of the Voyager is the vast amount of new knowledge of outer space it has provided and the interest in further exploration it's generated. That interest has resulted in the Galileo mission to Jupiter and the Cassini mission to Saturn, as well as the discovery of three new moons around Saturn using Earth-based instruments.
Today, this mission's legacy has made an impact in our culture, and has reached the film, art and music industries. Each spacecraft contains a "Golden Record," a 12-inch phonographic gold-plated copper capsule containing Earth sounds, pictures, and messages designed to give any possible alien who encounters the spacecraft an idea of what life on Earth is like. They are expected to last billions of years and could one day be the only traces of human civilization.
As for the future, it is expected that in the year 40,272 AD, Voyager 1 will come within 1.7 light years of an obscure star in the constellation Ursa Minor (the Little Bear or Little Dipper) and in about 40,000 years, Voyager 2 will come within about 1.7 light years of a star called Ross 248, a small star in the constellation of Andromeda.

Small, Water-Powered Satellites Could Be the Future of Space Exploration – Futurism
Posted: at 6:31 pm
In BriefA team at Purdue University have designed a water vaporpropulsion system that could make CubeSats more effective thatlarger satellites. The Smaller the Better
Satellites are typically imagined to be massive constructs that take millions of dollars to produce and maintain, but the much smaller CubeSatsminiaturized satellites shaped like cubes are more convenient, cost-effective, and easier to handle. The latest development in CubeSat propulsion could soon see CubeSats using water vapors to maneuver around, potentially making them the preferred hardware to use in future exploratory missions. Water is not only safe to use, but plentiful in our solar system; within our planetary neighborhood, its thought to be abundant just next door on Mars moon, Phobos.
A team at Purdue Universityis behind the water-propelled project, which involved a number of undergraduates as part of a propulsion design course. Their prototype CubeSat, presented at the 31st AIAA/USU Conference on Small Satellites, was made using commercially available products at a relatively low cost.
The new propulsion system, called a Film-Evaporation MEMS Tunable Array, or FEMTA thruster, utilizes small capillaries that are ten micrometers in diameter. Ten micrometers isnt large enough to allow the teaspoon of water inside the CubeSat to be used, so small heaters wereinstalled that can be activated to turn the water into vapor and provide thrust.
Four of these FEMTA thrusters were used on a single ten-centimeters-cubed CubeSat, allowing it to rotate on a single axis. For full three-axis rotation, twelve thrusters are required.
This is a very low power, said Alina Alexeenko, a professor at Purdue University and lead researcher on the propulsion project, in a press release. We demonstrate that one 180-degree rotation can be performed in less than a minute and requires less than a quarter watt, showing that FEMTA is a viable method for altitude control of CubeSats.
CubeSats have typically been used alongside their larger counterparts. Theyve previously had no propulsion system of their own, requiring them to be launched while aboard another craft. They have then been used for various tasks, such as internet service, high-res imagining, environmental observations, and military surveillance.
With this new water-based propulsion system, however, they can be used for far greater things, such as constellation-flying and exploration things traditional satellites are unable to do due to their size. Fortunately, Alexeenko and her team are eager to have their system used in a real space mission, and are pursuing a patent for the concept.
That will take some time and more work, of course. The goal now is to further reduce the weight, volume, and power needed to effectively use CubeSats in space. The aforementioned prototype could only accommodate four FEMTA thrusters, and still weighed 2.8 kilograms (6 pounds). To get the most out of the amount of water needed, the CubeSat will have to be lighter.

‘Give Japan NUKES to stop WW3’ North Korea crisis sparks calls for MORE weapons – Daily Star
Posted: at 6:30 pm
JAPAN should armed with nuclear weapons to deter North Korea from launching a missile strike against the US, an ex-US Navy commander has said.
GETTY
North Korea has angered the international community after threatening to fire ballistic missiles towards the US territory of Guam.
It is thought supreme leader Kim Jong-un may order the launch in the coming days after threats of fire and fury from US President Donald Trump.
To curb the threat posed by North Koreas nuclear programme, John M Bird, a retired vice admiral, has called for Japan to be given nukes.
Under Japans post-WW2 constitution, the nation is prohibited from possessing the weapons to wage war, including nukes.
But Mr Bird believes it is time to allow Japan, a major US ally, to develop a nuclear weapons programme of its own to counter North Koreas.
Kim Jong-un has threatened to fire missiles at the island of Guam, where the US has its foothold in the Pacific Ocean a key strategic location. We take a look at the island North Korea want to nuke

An aerial view of U.S. Naval Base Guam
Earlier this year Japanese Democratic Party head Hiroshi Amazu argued that his nation should have the right to defend itself with nukes.
He said: "Japan can't just wait until it's destroyed.
"It's legally possible for Japan to strike an enemy base that's launching a missile at us, but we don't have the equipment or capability."
If Japan were to become nuclear-armed, Mr Bird said it may deter the totalitarian state from launching an attack on the US or its allies.

Many thoughtful people have said we should introduce tactical nukes into the Western Pacific.
He said that Japanese nukes would also force China, North Koreas traditional ally, to rein in Jong-un and change its view of THAAD Americas defence missile system.
He said: Many thoughtful people have said we should introduce tactical nukes into the Western Pacific, making signals that Japan no longer considers the US nuclear umbrella adequate and is going their own way.
Those sorts of things will pique Chinas interest. Being that theyre upset about a THAAD, theyd be very upset and not like that option.
And if they thought it was realistic, they China might be willing to really weigh in with the North Koreans. That is only kind of diplomacy thats going to make a difference.

REUTERS
His comments come after China warned Jong-un and Trump to slam the breaks on the North Korea crisis.
The US and North Korea were urged to urgently "put the brakes" on provocative actions and words on Tuesday.
Speaking with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday in a phone conversation, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said he wanted to prevent an "August crisis".

KIM’S ARMY: WW3 looms as 3.5 MILLION ‘volunteer’ to fight for North Korea against USA – Express.co.uk
Posted: at 6:30 pm
With North Korea and America both refusing to blink first in the ongoing crisis, despot Kim Jong-un has now announced a massive army recruitment programme.
An article in a Pyongyang-based propaganda newspaper today declared already more than 3.5 million people had signed up to fight.
The propaganda rag claimed these millions were volunteers and included students and former soldiers - although the truth is likely to be far more grim.
As revealed by Express.co.uk last year, life in the North Korea army is one of pain, hunger and oppression.

And with absolute obedience to the three-generation Kim dynasty demanded, these military volunteers are more likely to be malnourished and desperate civilians forced into action.
The newspaper claimed 3.47 million people had asked to enlist in the army since the North Korean crisis began.

All the people are rising up across the country to retaliate against the US
North Korea newspaper
The piece said: "All the people are rising up across the country to retaliate against the US thousands of times. In North Hwanghae Province, 89,000 young men pleaded to enlist or reenlist on August 9 alone.
In Daedong County of South Pyongan Province, more than 20,000 students, party members and labourers filed enlistment or reenlistment requests.

It comes as the war of words moved another step closer to all-out conflict after US president Donald Trump said America was locked and loaded for battle.
And Japan has moved missiles and defence systems to its major cities in preparation for a missile attack.
GETTY
Hiroshima, Shimane and Kochi are particularly at risk as any North Korea missile fired at the US territory of Guam would pass directly overhead.
While Pyongyang said any missile would be aimed to miss the island and merely used to send a warning, any malfunction of the missile over Japan could put hundreds of thousands of people at risk - and given North Korea's patchy success record in missile launches, this is a major threat.
