The foundation of Western philosophy is probably rooted in psychedelics – Quartz
Posted: August 13, 2017 at 2:25 am
In the 1960s, intellectuals such as Aldous Huxley were fascinated by the effects of LSD, but today most professors are far too worried about respectability and tenure to investigate psychedelics themselves. Which is somewhat ironic, given that the field of Western philosophy has a huge debt to psychedelics, according to Peter Sjstedt-H, a philosophy doctoral candidate at University of Exeter who has written a book on the philosophical significance of drugs. In fact, one of Platos most-cited theories may have been a direct result of hallucinogenics.
In Platos Phaedo, the philosopher says he was inspired by the Eleusinian Mysteries, an ancient religious ceremony where participants took kykeon. Its widely believed (thought cannot be definitively proven) that kykeon was a psychoactive substance, which would explain the visions that participants experienced during the ceremony. Sjstedt-H notes that Plato references the Mysteries and seeing that his body is but a shell, which one can escape through these experiences, before he introduces his landmark notion of substance dualism: Namely, the idea that body and soul are distinct.
Under psychedelic experience, you can completely lose the link between you, yourself as a body; and you, yourself as the person that you think you are, including your memories, says Sjstedt-H. Theres this loss to the self, and the self is often associated with the body, so I can certainly see why a psychedelic experience would incline one towards a more dualistic view of the world.
If the Mysteries did indeed involve psychedelics, Sjstedt-H says we can credit them with inspiring some of the greatest and most influential thoughts in history.
[Alfred North] Whitehead famously said, Western philosophy is a series of footnotes to Plato. If Plato was inspired by psychedelics, then the whole of the Western canon is unwittingly inspired by these experiences, Sjstedt-H adds.
More than 2000 years later, Sjstedt-H believes that its absolutely essential to understand psychedelic experiences in order to develop a thorough philosophy of how the mind functions. You havent fully explained the mind until youve explained all facets of it, he says.
Psychedelics create a peak type of mind, a peak type of experience and, as such, theyre a valuable consideration in certain philosophical mysteries, like understanding the relationship between the brain and the mind. Research has shown that parts of the brain are less active during psychedelic experiences, which is the inverse of what one might expect for a period of heightened consciousness. This finding highlights the complexities of explaining how the mind and brain relate, which is one of the great philosophical challenges, known as the hard problem of consciousness.
But even among non-philosophers, Sjstedt-H believes that a lifetime without trying psychedelics is unnecessarily narrow. Experientially, it would be a pity to live ones life without having experienced the potentials of the human mind, he says. Its a bit like living in the same country all ones life and not going on holiday, not seeing the rest of the world. Its a loss. By having this experience, one experiences more reality because the mind is part of reality.
He adds that psychedelics can open your mind to new beliefs, increase appreciation for nature, and lead to completely new feelings. As well as being intellectually stimulating, Sjstedt-H says that psychedelics can be a sublime aesthetic experience.
Despite the potential benefits, Sjstedt-H does not believe that everyone should take psychedelics. Nor does he insist, as was common in the 60s, that doing so would lead to world peace. When I told Sjstedt-H that I was too afraid of my own mind to risk exploring its suppressed depths, he agreed that was a valid concern. Bad trips are a serious risk, and more troubling for some than others. Those who are religious (and so would be more profoundly affected by visions of devils, for example), are especially anxious, or have suffered serious traumas, could well find psychedelics to be harmful rather than enlightening.
We have no clear idea of how psychedelics produce their effect; but its thought that changes in brain activity create an altered state of consciousness. For those who are able to have a positive experience on psychedelics, Sjstedt-H says taking the drugs can be as profound as reading Nietzsche. Both the philosopher and the substance lead to questioning ones cultural values and societal rules, he notes.
Arguably, taking psychedelics can also enhance the experience of reading philosophy; Sjstedt-H points to the psychologist and philosopher William James, who claimed to only fully understand Hegel after taking nitrous oxide. (Though drugs havent improved Sjstedt-Hs own reading of Hegel.)
Though other philosophers are interested in hearing about his work and experiences with psychedelics, Sjstedt-H acknowledges that few are prepared to try the drugs, at least for now. Many are worried about the psychological risks, put off by their illegality, or simply dont want to mess with their brains.
But Sjstedt-H hopes that growing acceptance of the drugs will allow for a study of how psychedelics could shape the opinions and outlooks of great contemporary thinkers. They were good enough for Plato, after all.

My wife, a painter, was lying on the couch. The five blades of the ceiling fan are each a different color, she said musingly. Different? Yes, she continued, depending on which window the surface of the blade is lit by, or which lamp in the room, and the colors of the nearby walls.
Most of us perhaps see the fan s as off-white and are most concerned with how fast it will cool the room. It occurred to me that ordinary reality is so helpful, and so limited, because it sees things mainly in terms of the obvious use or dangers they suggest. A painters vision would then be analogous to what we call expanded consciousness, which is not better or worse than our usual vision, but which offers different information.
Because ordinary consciousness is so useful, many of us cling tightly to it. Any deviation from it may being forth prejudicial terms. Expanded visions are often dismissed as hallucinations, maybe caused by drugs. The world is divided strictly between material reality and a catch-all category called the spiritual. The former is studied by scientists; the latter, by priests and, may the Lord help us, by psychonauts. Stephen jay Gould called these realms magisteria. This division kept peace between the church and the men in lab coats, but it has confused the category of spiritual.
As a result of the distinction, anything outside of ordinary reality is consigned either to mental illness or to a transcendental realm. In the reaction to drugs after WWII and especially during the 1960s, the classic psychedelics were said to be psychotomimetic or hallucinogenic. In other words, the visions they occasioned were regarded as similar to mental illness. What else could there be, other than ordinary reality and distortions of it?
Except theology. So, as a new name for the hippies psychedelics, people who knew awe is the most important effect concocted the name entheogens, meaning they awaken the god within. The name was ambiguous about whether this god was transcendental or immanent, was a God familiar from the old-time religions with their temples, churches, and mosques or the sort of being who is prayed to or suggested by the increasingly popular phrase, spiritual but not religious.
The classic psychedelics are only one way to get beyond the limitations of ordinary reality, and they don't always effect a change. Even when revelatory on the personal level, the experience may remain trivial socially. Many of us have met guides who say, you dont always get the trip you wanted, but you do get the trip you need. If only this were the case! But at least there is a chance, as with any of the other techniques catalogued so usefully by groups such as the Council on Spiritual Practices (CSP).
(Disclosure: I had the honor to serve on the CSP board for a while starting in the 1990s.)
A friend in touch with a high Google executive tells me that in that firm its a firing offense to shoot down a new idea before it has an opportunity to be thoroughly explored, before it may suggest yet other ideas, one of which may lead to a product. In the non-profit world, too, things that eventually lead to a revolution are often said to be impossible, ridiculous, or in the contemptuous phrase of a physicist, not even wrong. In retrospect, everybody knows that a certain concept is right, even obvious, but not when it was nearly dismissed.
In his influential history of science, Thomas Kuhn advanced the useful hypothesis that after people do normal science for a while, anomalies pile up, and a new paradigm appears that takes account of what did not fit within the old paradigm. Brilliant, except where does the new paradigm come from? To conjure up an intuitive leap is indisputably true, but doesn't tell how it happens. Most ideas that are outside the box will not prove to be true, but one may, and in order to obtain the one its necessary to generate and at least briefly tolerate all the others. The kind of mind that thinks outside the box is not necessarily the same mind that frames and conducts careful experiments to test an idea.
A realist painter has to see what is actually there in order to reproduce it, even when that perception adds little or nothing to our sense of the usefulness (or danger) of an object, such as a ceiling fan. In a similar way, what we call expanded consciousness may help us to get beyond narrow pragmatism.

Well, the reason for this is unknown and there has been no official confirmation from Dmirty himself. So, we cant really say much at the moment. It is extremely upsetting to see such talented producers and DJs quitting these days. We hope it is just a temporary phase and he returns back soon.

Cyberpunk Classic Neuromancer Might Become A Movie From Deadpool Director – GameSpot

A movie version of William Gibson's hugely influential sci-fi novel Neuromancer has been in development many times over the years, but has yet to make it to the screen. It has now been reported that another attempt is being made to adapt the classic book, with Deadpool's Tim Miller tapped to direct.
According to Deadline, Miller and his VFX studio Blur will develop the movie at Fox. Miller was initially set to direct Deadpool 2 for the studio, but disagreements with star and producer Ryan Reynolds led to his departure in October last year. The site reports that Fox has been looking for a major project for Miller since then. X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to produce.
Miller is the latest filmmaker to be attached to a potential Neuromancer movie. Directors Chris Cunningham and Chuck Russell previously worked on different versions of a script, while music video director Joseph Kahn was attached to the project in 2007. The film got closer in 2010 when Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice) was hired to work on it. His version was still in development as late as 2013, with a script co-written by Gibson.
Neuromancer was first published in 1984. It tells the story of a veteran computer hacker who is hired by a mysterious employer to perform a dangerous, almost-impossible hack. The novel is now considered one of the most important works of the cyberpunk genre and is also notable for popularizing the term "cyberspace."

Deadpool’s Tim Miller Lands Gig As Director of Adaptation Of Cyberpunk Novel Neuromancer – LRM Online (press release) (blog)
Posted: at 2:23 am
The world just a little bit bleaker the day we learned that Deadpool director Tim Miller would be dropping out of Deadpool 2. Deadpool was a film thats been a long time in the making, and the fact that one of its key architects wouldnt be around for the second one was a bit of a gut punch to fans of the first. However, there was a bright side to this sad bit of news. While Miller would no longer be involved in Deadpool, it did open him up to work on other big projects.
Not long after, it was revealed that he was in early talks to direct an eventual reboot of James Camerons The Terminator. However, with the rights still not set to revert back to Cameron until 2019. Another project Millers been attached to is the adaptation Influx, though the current status of that is unknown. Now, Miller is attached to yet another novel adaptation.
RELATED:WHOA! Cameron Coming Back For A True TERMINATOR 3? With DEADPOOL's Tim Miller?!
According to Deadline, Miller is on board to direct Neuromancer, a cyberpunk film from sci-fi author William Gibson. The synopsis for the novel on Amazon is as follows:
No screenwriter is currently set to adapt the story, but the studio is working on setting someone up as we speak. On board to produce is X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg.
Between Terminator, Influx, and now Neuromancer on Millers plate (not to mention his producing Sonic the Hedgehog), it seems like the filmmaker has lined up the next few years quite nicely. As of right now, each of these projects are in various states of development, so we wouldnt be surprised if he were to tackle all these films over a 2-3 year period, which would make for quite the packed release schedule down the line.
Are you excited to see Miller join another project? Let us know your thoughts down below!

Staff Report
The Tullahoma Middle School football team quickly grabbed the lead and never looked back on Thursday night, soundly defeating Coffee County at home, shutting out the Red Raiders 38-0.
After dominating Coffee County on Thursday night, the Wildcats (1-0) will have a quick turnaround when they host Bridgeforth on Tuesday. Kickoff of that game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Stopping the Red Raiders on their first possession, Tullahoma took over at Coffee Countys 43-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Zach Suggs broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown run with 5:13 left in the opening quarter. DJ Dillehay added a short 3-yard scamper to punch in the 2-point conversion, making it an 8-0 ballgame.

Tullahoma padded its lead by adding another touchdown on its second possession. This time it was a 9-yard rushing score from Jacob Dixon that increased the Wildcats lead with 58 seconds left in the first quarter. Quarterback Ryan Scott hit Brody Melton on a pass to compete the 2-point conversion as TMS led 16-0.
Coffee County looked poised to cut into its deficit on its next possession. However, a crucial penalty stalled that drive. On fourth-and-goal from the 24-yard line, the Raiders elected to go for it, but stalled and Tullahoma took over possession.
Neither team was able to score again, until Tullahoma opened the second half with a touchdown just 43 seconds into the third quarter. Jaxon Sheffield broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown run and Cayden Tucker ran for the 2-point conversion, putting the Wildcats up 24-0 with 7:17 remaining in the third quarter.
Suggs added his second score of the evening with another long touchdown run. After the Wildcats took over at their 49-yard line, Suggs broke loose for a 51-yard score with 5:29 left in the third quarter. The 2-point conversion was unsuccessful as Tullahoma led 30-0.
Tullahoma added one final third-quarter touchdown with 24 seconds left in the period. Sheffield capped off a six-play drive, punching the ball into the end zone from 2 yards out and Dixon added the 2-point conversion, putting the Wildcats up 38-0.

Political correctness hasn’t gone mad. It has made us nicer – Irish Times

Let me say this again. The words politically correct are the near-exclusive preserve of reactionary snowflakes. This would surprise any visiting alien exposed to columns about left-wing despots shutting down dissent such as that in all those columns about left-wing despots shutting down dissent. (The noise from the silenced is often deafening.)
The common opening line I suppose this is not politically correct, but suggests that those who disapprove of whats being said often something racist, homophobic or sectarian are likely to use those words when making their case.
PC gone mad is equally loaded. The implication here is that there was a reasonable movement called PC that went on to lose the run of itself. We didnt mind PC when it dissuaded youngsters from beating up foreigners in public lavatories. But now that its illegal to sing the national anthem and all TDs must be disabled women the time has come to call a halt. Its PC gone mad.
After ploughing through a few acres of this stuff, our alien would be convinced that, used approvingly, the term was rarely far from liberal human lips.
Let me say it again in a different way. Almost nobody arguing for respectful language has used those words in a quarter of a century. Before then it was occasionally uttered in Marxist circles. Michel Foucault used it to describe those who professed to communism without doing (as he saw it) sufficient intellectual heavy lifting.
In the early 1990s, a number of conservative commentators, reacting against supposed leftist tyranny on US campuses, began flinging it about in articles, books and scholarly papers.
Its hard to think of a comparably peculiar linguistic shift. An obscure phrase uttered around the mimeograph machine in a few Trotskyite squats had been reinvented as the slogan beneath which a wholly imaginary movement was alleged to march. You know who I mean: the PC Mob.
The words have now been appropriated to describe any resistance to insensitive or discriminatory language.
You found a great deal of this in defences of Kevin Myerss recent, controversial column. One writer to this newspaper approved of him for not toeing the politically correct line. Ruth Dudley Edwards admired him for calling out the nonsense that characterises the politically correct.
There was much, much more. (We should clarify that both were speaking of his work generally, not specifically of the column that led to the furore.)
The notion that some recent puritanical upsurge this thing called PC was responsible for objections to Myerss comments about Jews is absurd.
Such dangerous stereotypes have been frowned upon in most newspapers for the last century. The phantom menace of PC has, if anything, allowed right-wing commentators to open their bile ducts wider. Rude comments about vulnerable groups in society are now framed as brave resistance to the leftist bullies.
You know who I mean its the PC Mob again.
An unlucky half-dozen endured the retired major venting spleen about immigrants at the golf club bar. Hundreds of thousands gather to hear Sword of Albions racist YouTube rants about how the Mob has silenced him. PC so oppressed Donald Trump that he barely managed to become president of the United States.
It is a good thing that the media, academia and public institutions are now more sensitive about language and minority rights. The racism and sexism on television visible until as late as the 1980s now seems shocking.
A common trope in sitcoms notably in Love Thy Neighbour and the more respectable Till Death Us Do Part allowed any degree of racist abuse if the character speaking was revealed as a fool. A realistic John Cleese allowed the N-word to be cut from a recent repeat of Fawlty Towers.
Attitudes really began to change in the 1990s. It is no coincidence that the myth of political correctness emerged simultaneously. Here was a weapon to assist the restoration of the old bigotries. It hasnt quite worked.
The generation that grew up in those years the Millennials so despised by old, thick windbags has proved more tolerant, more open-minded and more watchful for discrimination.
Of course there have been downsides to these shifts in perspective. It takes no great research to find some low-hanging fruitcake offering an idiotic opinion on Twitter that plays into paranoia about the PC Mob. One or two celebrities in particular deliver on a daily basis (you know who you are).
We could do without campaigns against potentially problematic films or TV series before those projects have reached the public. But, on balance, this thing that only reactionary snowflakes call political correctness has been beneficial to western society. Were just a little nicer. Were just a little kinder. Maybe its time to reclaim the phrase.

Alexandria wants your help in renaming Jeff Davis Highway – WTOP

After voting to change the name of Jefferson Davis Highway through Alexandria, city planners now want the public's help in finding a new name. (WTOP/Mike Murillo)
ALEXANDRIA, Va. After Alexandrias city council voted to change the name of Jefferson Davis Highway in the city, planners are now asking for help to find a new name.
Its not that whatever name gets the most suggestions will win, its just a brainstorming process, said Craig Fifer, spokesman for the City of Alexandria.
Fifer said the City of Alexandrias Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Renaming Jefferson Davis Highways survey has already received several hundred name ideas.
So far, the city has seen a wide variety of names according to Fifer. The suggestions include local figures, others are geographic in nature and some suggest extending the names the road takes in other parts of the town, which include Patrick and Henry streets.
Alexandria resident Zach Stern supports the name change because he said the road celebrates a historical figure that he believes shouldnt be celebrated. Jefferson Davis was the president of Confederate States of America.
Stern said he believes it should be renamed to Alexandria Highway.
Roads are often named after the destination and I am proud of Alexandria, so it seems like something we can all rally around, Stern said,
Resident Amanda Curylo said she doesnt have a name idea, but she recommends another historic name which isnt as controversial.
For others, such as Chet Nagle who has lived in Old Town Alexandria for 36 years, said he still feels the name should stay the same.
Jefferson Davis was a historical figure in our country and I dont think that this political correctness movement makes any sense, Nagle said.
Ideas for the what the road should be called will be collected through Sept. 15.
There will also be public hearings to gather ideas. Theyre scheduled for Aug. 17 and Sept. 25. A final board meeting on the decision will be held on Oct. 5.
All three meetings will begin at 7 p.m. at the Community Room of The Station at Potomac Yard
Fifer said once the advisory group will make its recommendation to the city manager in October, the city manager will then pass that on to city council by the end of the year for a vote.

Ken Macdonald said there had been past reluctance to look into Muslim men who had been targeting white girls.
But speaking on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4, Lord MacDonald said that was no longer the case after recent prosecutions.
The Liberal Democrat peer's comments come after 18 people were convicted of or admitted offences in a series of trials related to child sexual exploitation in Newcastle.
He said: "I think there has been in the past a reluctance to investigate a category of crime that people might believe attaches to a particular community in circumstances where men may be targeting young women.
SKY NEWSBBC
I don't think any of us can pretend that in the past these cases have been examined as rigorously as they might have been
Lord Macdonald
Presenter John Humphrys cut in to clarify which part of the community he was referring to.
He said: In other words, we're talking about - by and large - Muslim men who have been targeting white girls?"
Lord Macdonald replied: "Yes, exactly."
Mr Humphrys then asked if political correctness had interfered with the course of justice.

The most dangerous residential streets in the UK
Lord Macdonald reiterated cases has not been looked into as they should have been.
He said: I think that's no longer the case and I think the fact that these sorts of cases are now being brought successfully demonstrates that those sorts of so-called taboos no longer exist - but I don't think any of us can pretend that in the past these cases have been examined as rigorously as they might have been."
He added he hoped attitudes towards young women in these cases had changed.
He said: There's obviously a serious issue about the way young women are regarded in these cases.
Regarded as trash, regarded as available for sex, and this seems to be a recurring theme - and I don't think anyone thinks now we've got it.
"This is a major problem, it's a major problem in particular communities and it has to be confronted not just by law enforcement but by communities themselves."
Lord Macdonald said he expected more cases and added he was sure there were ongoing investigations.
He said: "I think it's a real wake-up call for communities. Not all sex crime takes place in a single community, ofcoursewe knowthat, that's obvious.
"But there is a particular issue about some men in some communities who feel these young girls are trash who are available for sex.
"We all knowthat,we've seenitin this case, we've seen it in other cases, we know it's going on as we speak.
"Law enforcement has a response, the police have a response, prosecutors have a response, judges have a response, but communities need a response themselves."
