Bio-hacking our way up the evolution ladder – Yanko Design – Form Beyond Function

Posted: July 10, 2017 at 8:22 pm

Were all already cyborgs, says Elon Musk. You have more power than the president of the United States had 20 years ago, he says, and he couldnt be more right. The things we invent today push our abilities in ways that would make our ancestors think were gods. That smartphone has you talking with people hundreds of miles away, it can find you the answer to pretty much any question you have on your mind, if you think from the perspective of someone from a century back, weve come a long way into hacking human capabilities.

Thats what Dani Clodes Third Thumb project aims at doing Exploring and expanding the possibilities of what we can do with additional powers in this case, an extra thumb. With the aim of adding to humans possibilities, rather than replacing whats lost, the prosthetic has the potential rapidly alter the way we live our lives. The thumb, 3D printed from a variant of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) called Ninjaflex, sits right beside your little finger. Its connected to a smart-bracelet that receives its commands via bluetooth from the wearers foot. Pressure sensors are placed on the soles of the feet and any force you apply with your foot is perceived as a signal by the bracelet i.e., if you press down with one foot, the thumb flexes inwards, grasping whatever youre holding. Clode says that the learning curve is rather minimal and people get used to the controls pretty quick. Watch the video to see one rather confident candidate shred away at a guitar with a Third Thumb!

The third thumb could just be one of those products that dramatically change the world as we know it, making us grip better, text better, work better, and probably evolving communications to a massive extent, from gestures to sign language. Me, Im just happy if I can grip my smartphone and text in bed without having it slip and smack me flat on my face. *dumb smile*

The final stage for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – ESPN

Posted: at 8:22 pm

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will see its final stage at Evo 2017.

This year will be the last time Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (UMVC3) enters the Evolution Fighting Game Championships (Evo) main stage as a featured game. Although it took a crowd-funded contest to put the Evo mainstay series on the map, it made it to the big show. That being said, there has never been a two-time Marvel vs. Capcom 3 champion. With every former Marvel vs. Capcom 3 champion, except Nicolas "KaneBlueRiver" Gonzalez, in attendance, this year will represent the last chance at eternal glory.

South Korea may be the favorite coming into Evo 2017, but every last player has something left to prove.

For the first in Evo history, viewers will be watching Smash 4 on finals day instead of Melee.

1 Related

With Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite slated to replace UMVC3 as the tournament standard for the series, this year's stakes for an Evo crown are at an all-time high. The competitive landscape looks very different than last year with several newcomers emerging as viable threats. The "three gods of Marvel" still exist and will play in the tournament, but are they the favorites to take down the crown? Who will pen the final chapter to the UMVC3 book?

The marvelous one may not be ranked high on the Curleh Circuit (138), but make no mistake -- this is your Marvel standard. Justin Wong is the epitome of defensive and safe play and he rarely makes errors in his approaches. The cracks in his armor lie in his character choice and Evo preparation (he's good at too many games), but the hunger for a second title may just be the necessary ingredient for another legendary run.

He finally got his Evo championship last year to top off a prosperous UMVC3 career and he's been outspoken about playing the game when many tailed off. He wants to represent the game again and what's more storybook than the game's most consistent and successful player finishing as the only two-time Evo champion?

The heel of the fighting game community is also one of the best talkers and movers for the UMVC3 scene. FilipinoChamp is always in discussion to win any Marvel tournament because his play is arguably the best out of all three gods. He's an innovator in Magneto play, the best Phoenix in the world, and one of the hardest players to ever put on tilt.

Gods may live on mountains, but that still represents a peak; these are the players that can ultimately climb the mountain and finally assert themselves as true Marvel monsters.

He was the champion of UMVC3 when the game was at its lowest over the past two years, but that was not meant as a sign of disrespect. If anything, it could be argued that RyanLV is the biggest target at Evo. His dominant run over the majority of the past two years is nothing short of "godlike." If you cannot get past his infinite patience with Morrigan, you will be overwhelmed by his rushdown Chun-Li or Phoenix.

Peak-a-boo! ApologyMan makes the list because he is the definition of one-touch kill. His Firebrand team can finish games as soon as he kidnaps his opponent from the air or ground, but his major flaw is his own mentality. If ApologyMan can put together a complete tournament performance and run, Evo may just be his.

RayRay brings clean execution, creative okiezeme, and some of the best clutch in the Marvel community. He's arguably the best from the east coast and will try to beat his 2015 performance when he came up just short of taking the Evo crown.

With two top-three appearances at Evo, Angelic has the pedigree and resume to chalk it up to three this year. The uber-aggressive Shuma Gorath truther lives and dies by the sword of unrelenting forward motion.

He's a household name by this point, but he's still missing the top finishes at major tournaments. It would be amazing to see a Deadpool in the top-eight of Evo, but can Dual Kevin put together the tournament of his life?

Priest's top-eight run last Evo snuck up on almost everyone in the Marvel community. Priest's unorthodox M.O.D.O.K. team may surprise some players this year, but there's no question that he's one of the top players in the field. If he can put together a consistent run, another Sunday appearance may be in the works.

As long as his tournament run is devoid of "bullet hell" teams, Not Enough Damage's top tier play and team will make plenty of noise. One of the newcomers to the elite tier, Not Enough Damage has the resume this year to chase some of the best in the competition.

Salisbury, MD Now Available internationally, for the first time ever, Evolution Craft Brewing Company has partnered with Five Good Inc. to distribute in Tokyo, Japan and then to the broader markets of Japan.

Its always been a dream of ours to have our product distributed internationally. Our partnership with Five Good Inc. was a logical fit, as they are industry pioneers in the Japanese craft beer market bringing beer from the US East Coast to Japan. John Knorr, co-founder of Evolution Craft Brewing.

The import craft beer market in Japan has grown 26% in the last five years, as the demand for better beer has grown exponentially. Currently the majority of American exports in the Japanese market are from west coast breweries. Five Good Inc.s choice to collaborate with Evolution came after sampling craft beers from all over the east coast. Evolution is one of the first four chosen breweries from Five Good Inc. to distribute in Japan. In the near future, Evolution anticipates expanding its domestic and international footprint and continuing concentrated growth in existing markets of Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

‘Inventor of Email’ Compares Trump’s Immigration Policy to Science – Gizmodo

Posted: at 8:21 pm

Shiva Ayyadurai believes a lot of odd things.

Most memorably Ayyadurai thinks of himself as the inventor of email, and to that end has sued publicationsTechdirt and Gizmodos former parent company Gawkerwhich have claimed otherwise, despite a wide consensus that electronic mail was created by computing pioneer Ray Tomlinson. Ayyadurai also thinks he has a shot at a seat in the Senate, which is why he plans to run against Elizabeth Warren in 2018.

He also believes Donald Trumps proposed policies on immigration make sense, because uhh, cellular biology, or astronomy, or something.

When hes not tying up the legal system, doing AMAs on Reddits r/the_donald, or making appearances on InfoWars, Ayyadurai posts videos to his little-watched YouTube channel which generally focus on his doomed congressional race. But, his most recent upload, for no particular reason, is an explanation of how DNA worksand, incidentally, of keeping viruses out of the US of A, nearly all of which he cribs from an earlier video entitled Build The Wall - A Scientific Explanation!

How anyone could manage to crowbar politics into a biology 101 lesson? Recall that scientific precepts have been appropriated and misapplied to all sorts of things things that serve the needs of hateful, craven ghouls through the ages: Social Darwinism hiding the vampiric acts of an oligarch class in the armor of natural order; discoveries in genetics and heredity fueling the idea of racial purity which framed ghastly forced sterilization programs as a means of assisting natural selection. Its not institutionalized crueltyits nature!

In the same way all reactionary thought pines to return to some better epoch pastwhen, specifically, was America great?ignorance cloaked in the language of science almost always employs the crutch of an imagined equilibrium in pre-civilization.

Lets check in with Ayyadurai around the 4-minute mark:

By the way, to all of the very educated people who really think Donald Trump and people [who] are right wing or fanatics or whatever you want to call them, that theyre against borders let me just make a slight point here: you notice that the human cell has a cell membrane. This is really a border. And this cell membrane protects the cell. It determines what things go in. So for example, viruses are not allowed inhopefully, if you have a good strong immune systemand certain things are allowed in that go through proper immigration.

And by the way if you look at the universe: if the sun is here and you have the Earth over here we also have an atmosphere so gamma rays and certain things dont come into the earth. Bottom line is: biology, astronomy, teaches us that everything in nature has borders to protect us so its very simple. We also need borders. Different story, but we can learn it all from nature.

Robots to haul luggage, and fight crime, in train stations – CNET – CNET

Posted: at 8:21 pm

Robots will carry luggage, assist lost travelers, clean floors and catch shoplifters in Japan's railways.

Traveling can be a pain, especially when lost luggage, delayed flights and confusing train station layouts are the norm.

Japan is hoping to make traveling safer, and maybe even more fun, by adding robots to give a helping mechanical hand at train stations.

East Japan Railwayslast week announced the creation of JRE Robotics Station, a company that will design robots to help travelers navigate train stations and get to their trains on time.

Other robots will be designed to carry luggage -- mainly assisting travelers with disabilities, not merely those who hate to lug around heavy suitcases.

The robots will also be programmed to understand a variety of languages to accommodate foreign visitors. Other robots will be designed to clean floors and otherwise tidy up the train stations.

Security robots that can detect shoplifters are also part of the new initiative. The idea of futuristic RoboCops makes sense considering the railway company also manages a number of hotels and shopping centers in Japan.

But if you want to see this new robotic workforce in action, you may have to wait awhile. JRE Robotics Station has yet to announce when the robots will be in place to servetravelers.

Why I Think Home Robots Will Become Invisible – IEEE Spectrum

Posted: at 8:21 pm

Photo-illustration: IEEE Spectrum; Roomba image: iRobot In this guest post, Joe Jones, the inventor of the Roomba, argues that home robots will follow computers into the shadows.

How many computers do you own?

If you picked a number close to three (say, laptop, tablet, and smartphone) youre way off. The answer is probably dozens. There are computers in your car, in your appliances, in your thermostat, and maybe even in your light bulbs. Every year the number goes up.

Today, visible computers are just the slimmest tip of the iceberg. Most computers are hidden away, quietly performing their jobs without you even being aware of the work they do for you. Thats as it should be. You have no interest in the computers themselves, you just want certain tasks done.

Cute, social robots currently get a lot of press, but are these engaging devices early emissaries of our robotic future? Are we entering an era where no one would dream of living without a cheerful electromechanical companion? In my view, companion robots offer novelty over utility, but once the novelty wears off, its only utility that people will pay for.

Rather than being front and center, home robots, I believe, will follow computers into the shadows. Why? Because people dont want robots. (I say this despite 30-plus years as a practicing roboticist.) Consumers want a spotless floor; not a machine buzzing around underfoot. Every morning, you want to find your dresser filled with clean clothes; you have no need to socialize with a laundry-bot no matter how exuberant it may be. People want the things a robot can do for them; the robot itself may just get in the way.

Acknowledging that consumers dont love robots the way we do might help roboticists build better products. The robot, I think, should not be an end in itself but instead should be the simplest, most cost effective way to deliver what our customers truly want. Furthermore, if a proposed robot is not the simplest, most cost effective solution to a problem consumers want solved, then we shouldnt build that robot.

In the fairytale of the shoemaker and the elves, the shoemaker awakens each morning to find that his work is done. Discovering how the work was accomplished requires effort on the part of the shoemaker. This, I think, is good inspiration for robot developers.

Home robotics hasnt achieved that happy ideal yet. We can program Roomba to emerge and work when no one is home, but its still necessary to empty the dirt compartment and clean the brushes. My newest robot, Tertill, which is available on Kickstarter, is another step in the direction of invisibilitydelivering a weed-free garden with almost no attention from the gardener.

I look forward to the day when the logistics of home life will simply run smoothly and no one need trouble themselves with the details. Unless they want to.

Joe Jones is co-founder and CTO of Franklin Robotics, which is developing a solar-powered garden-weeding robot named Tertill. Previously, he was co-founder and CTO of Harvest Automation and a senior roboticist at iRobot, where he was the co-inventor of the Roomba vacuuming robot. Follow him on Twitter: @JoeRobotJones

Robotics competition held at Taylor Sportsplex – Southgate News Herald

Posted: at 8:21 pm

The Big Bang happened in Taylor July 7-8 when the Taylor Schools robotics program held its annual invitation of the same name.

In all there were 23 schools from the U.S. and Canada represented.

Joe Horth, the robotics director for the school, said this was a bigger version of the invitational they started hosting last year, but that he would like to see it continue to grow.

The competition was outside of the traditional high school competitive season, but if Horth has his way, that might change in the future as well. He said the school might attempt to host a high school district competition in the future.

The competition was held in the Belle Tire Arena, with the staging held at the other ice arena. The ice surfaces at both arenas are down during the summer months.

Second edition of Springer Handbook of Robotics – Robohub

Posted: at 8:21 pm

The Second Edition of the award-winning Springer Handbook of Robotics edited by Bruno Siciliano and Oussama Khatib has recently been published. The contents of the first edition have been restructured to achieve four main objectives: the enlargement of foundational topics for robotics, the enlightenment of design of various types of robotic systems, the extension of the treatment on robots moving in the environment, and the enrichment of advanced robotics applications. Most previous chapters have been revised, fifteen new chapters have been introduced on emerging topics, and a new generation of authors have joined the handbooks team. Like for the first edition, a truly interdisciplinary approach has been pursued in line with the expansion of robotics across the boundaries with related disciplines. Again, the authors have been asked to step outside of their comfort zone, as the Editorial Board have teamed up authors who never worked together before.

No doubt one of the most innovative elements is the inclusion of multimedia content to leverage the valuable written content inside the book. Under the editorial leadership of Torsten Krger, a web portal has been created to host the Multimedia Extension of the book, which serves as a quick one-stop shop for more than 700 videos associated with the specific chapters. In addition, video tutorials have been created for each of the seven parts of the book, which benefit everyone from PhD students to seasoned robotics experts who have been in the field for years. A special video related to the contents of the first chapter shows the journey of robotics with the latest and coolest developments in the last 15 years. As publishing explores new interactive technologies, an App has been made available in the Google/IOS stores to introduce an additional multimedia layer to the readers experience. With the app, readers can use the camera on their smartphone or tablet, hold it to a page containing one or more special icons, and produce an augmented reality on the screen, watching videos as they read along the book.

For more information on the book, please visit the Springer Handbook website.

The Multimedia Portaloffers free access to more than 700 accompanying videos. In addition, a Multimedia App is now downloadable:AppStoreandGooglePlayfor smartphones and tablets, allowing you to easily access multimedia content while reading the book.

Why Mazor Robotics Dropped 15.6% in June — The Motley Fool – Motley Fool

Posted: at 8:21 pm

What happened

Investors in Israeli-basedMazor Robotics (NASDAQ:MZOR)had to stomach a greater than 15% plunge in June, according to data fromS&P Global Market Intelligence.

The decline was primarily caused by the news that the Israeli Securities Authority had conducted a search at the company's headquarters. Investors also learned that the agency had also performed a question and answer session with some of the company's officers.

While management stressed that Mazor has not been charged with any wrongdoing and that it is fully cooperating with the agency, the surprise news caught traders off-guard. In addition, a number of law firms announced their intention to look into the matter on behalf of investors to see ifMazor's management team had misled the public in some way.

Given the negative news flow, it isn't hard to figure out why traders knocked down the company's share price in June.

Mazor's CEOOri Hadomi did his best to calm the market's fears during his presentation at theJefferies 2017 Global Healthcare Conference mid-month. He reasserted that the company has not been charged by the agency and that it made the announcement in an effort to be as transparent as possible with investors.

Thankfully, the markets appear to be looking past this issue after the company pre-announced its secondquarter results. Investors learned that Mazor expects to reportrecord revenue of about $15.4 million in the quarter, which represents growth of more than 85% year-over-year. In addition, the company reported that itsold 19 systems during the period. That helps to reaffirm that its partnership with Medtronic is paying off.

All in all, Mazor's continued success with system sales continue to prove that the bull case for owning its stock remains intact. For that reason, I'm personally content to hang on to my shares for the foreseeable future.

Brian Feroldi owns shares of Mazor Robotics. The Motley Fool owns shares of Medtronic. The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy.
