What is the future of nanotechnology in food? – Food Dive
Posted: June 30, 2017 at 5:28 pm
Dive Brief:
Nanotechnology in the food industry is expected to nearly triple in value to $20.4 billion by 2020, with several emerging areas for innovation, reports New Food Magazine.
Engineered nanotech compounds could offer great benefits in ingredients particularly for increased solubility and bioavailabilityas well as in food packaging with antimicrobial surfaces and sensors that change color when food begins to degrade.
In the food sector, there has been a 40% increase in publications and a 90% increase in patent filings involving nanotechnology in the past two decades. More than 1,000 companies now have an R&D focus on nanotechnology-based products. Future applications could include immobilizing enzymes to improve their efficiency and reuse, and using nanoscale structures to create new food textures.
Nanotechnology refers to controlling compounds on a molecular scale measured in nanometers, or millionths of meters. In the food industry, the technology has excited manufacturers as its potential uses have been explored, such as producing stronger flavors or colors, improving the bioavailability of nutrients, and detecting bacteria in packaging.
However, early enthusiasm from researchers and product developers was met with pushback from consumers who were concerned about the technologys safety. Since then, the FDA has released guidelines on using nanotechnology in food, but the industry has been wary about how it communicates nanotech-based innovation with consumers.
Nanoscale compounds in food are not new. They exist naturally in milk, with nanoscale casein particles responsible for its fat stability. Meanwhile, more than 1,600 consumer products contain engineered nanoscale particles, according to an inventory run by The Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies. They are already widely used in the food packaging sector to help ensure food quality and safety. Nanotech-based sensors can detect and measure the presence of oxygen or bacteria, such as listeria.
In the ingredient sector, nanotechnology is still more widely used in supplements. However, nanoencapsulation could be used to protect sensitive compounds like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and polyunsaturated fatty acids so they could be delivered only when they reach the gut. That would improve how they are absorbed by the body, and reduce their impact on a products taste and appearance.
Communicating the benefits of nanotechnology in food is still one of the industrys biggest challenges, and some say it is slowing development in the sector. However, with diverse applications covering everything from improved food safety to better nutrition, reduced food waste, and biodegradable packaging, it is inevitable that consumers will start to see more nanoscale compounds in consumer products in the coming years.

World on brink of WW3 as NATO boss warns Putin cyber attack could trigger ARMED RESPONSE – Daily Star
Posted: at 5:28 pm
A TOP NATO official has warned another major cyber attack may lead to all out war as governments reel from devastating hacks.
Secretary general Jens Stoltenberg made the chilling comment following a paralysing software attack that crippled governments and businesses across the globe.
Mr Stoltenberg said: The attack in May and this week underlines the importance of strengthening our cyber defences and that is what we are doing.
We exercise more, we share best practices and technology and we also work more and more closely with all allies.
GETTY
He added NATO leaders last year agreed a devastating cyberattack could be considered a threat to warrant members to trigger article 5 which states nations will actively defend an ally if they come under attack.
While it is not clear where the ransomeware hack which holds data hostage until payments are made originated, officials in Ukraine laid blame squarely at Vladimir Putins feet.
Kiev previously stated the Kremlin had launched similarly devastating attacks on their neighbour.
GETTY
Putin has an arsenal of state-of-the-art weaponry at his fingertips. Could this be the hardware that wages WW3?

GETTY
Firms in the UK said they had been crippled by the virus and foreign businesses and governments also claimed to have been hit.
British defence secretary Michael Fallon took a strong stance on Tuesday and said the government would consider using military force against a country that ordered a cyber attack.
The hack comes little over one month after a similar software crippled the NHS and other institutions across the globe.

CF Mller to Lead Design of Project Replacing Alison and Peter Smithson’s Robin Hood Gardens – ArchDaily

C.F. Mller to Lead Design of Project Replacing Alison and Peter Smithsons Robin Hood Gardens
The Swan Housing Association has announced the appointment of Danish firm C.F. Mller to join Haworth Tompkins and Metropolitan Workshopin designing housing projects for the Blackwall Reach regeneration plan, a 300 million redevelopment effort which will replace Alison and Peter Smithsons Brutalist east London estate, Robin Hood Gardens.
As leaders of Phase 3 of the plan, C.F. Mller will design housing for the eastern portion of the site. A total of 330 one- to five-bedroom residential units, half of which have been designated as affordable, will be located within a courtyard block complex at the edge of an existing garden mound one of the few elements of the original estate that will be retained. The garden is planned to be replanted and renamed the Millennium Green.
Selected from a shortlist of five practices, C. F. Mller was praised by Swan for their focus on inside out design that places priority of the buildings residents.
We were very impressed by their inside out approach to design. C.F. Mller really focused on the people who will live in these new homes and the relationship of the homes to the public realm, said Swans Executive Director of Regeneration and Development, Geoff Pearce. They were passionate about ensuring we deliver human scale street scenes and links into the landscape to offset the impact of the busy external environment, which is close to the Blackwall Tunnel.
As a regeneration team, we felt strongly the C. F. Mller team would bring a fresh and positive approach to the next phase of Blackwall Reach and we are delighted to be able to continue and further develop the positive working relationship which has proved so productive in relation to their work for us on our regeneration of Laindon Shopping Centre.
C.F. Mller will continue to develop the early schemes shown in renderings released with the news, working with development partners and the community to create an inclusive design.
Our approach to this challenging project is to develop an architectural and placemaking response with the focus on designing the best possible new homes within a challenging location, said Rolf Nielsen, Associate Partner at C.F. Mller.
In total, the Blackwall Reach Regeneration Project will create 1,500 apartments and a variety of public spaces including community centers, shops, cafes and a mosque. Phase 1 of the project is already underway with 98 out of 242 homes, the mosque, a community center and an extension to an existing school already constructed. Phase 2 is expected to begin shortly, which will add 242 further homes in four residential buildings designed by Metropolitan Workshop and Haworth Tompkins.
Several notable architects, Richard Rogers, Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Robert Venturi and Simon Smithson (a partner at RSHP and son of Alison and Peter Smithson), had earlier petitioned to save Robin Hood Gardens from demolition, but the building was denied historic listing in 2015.

This Members-Only Club Is Like Soho House for Fashion Interns – Observer
Posted: at 5:23 pm
Even though fashion interns spend their summers logging hours in offices rather than soaking up rays at the beach, a highly-covetedSoho House membership or similar, is stillslightly out of budget for most of them. But the world is changing.
CF Clubhouse is a newly opened members-only club geared at creating networking opportunities for college students who are based inNew York City for summer internships. The Nolita pop-up is the child of online platform, CollegeFashionista, which aims to create a community for the fashion stars of tomorrow, by allowing them exclusive membership to an online platform and community of fellow interns/ upcoming fashionistas.
This is a generation of experiencers, so we thought why not give them as many experiences possible in the most socially-shareable space possible? founder Amy Levin explained to the Observer.
Perhaps the best part about CF Clubhouse is that membership is totally and completely free. The CF Clubhouse is open to our Style Guru members. To get there you just have to apply to be a part of CollegeFashionista. Once [youre] accepted, you get access to incredible opportunities, including the Clubhouse, Levin explained, the best part is, there is no fee.
Levin was inspired to create a community for students while studying at Indiana University, in a very college-centric town, where she found herself feeling envious of the opportunities her contemporaries attending schools in New York and LA were experiencing.
I realized there were probably students all over the nation who also felt isolated in their college towns and had similar feelings of wanting to be connected to the fashion industry and build their own resumes. So in August of 2009 I launched CollegeFashionista at five campuses, to create a place where those individuals could go and connect with one another.
CF Clubhouse will be holding several events for its members over the summer, which include a Sephora Beauty Night, a buying and merchandising workshop to fill students in on how to get ahead in the industry, and discussion panels with editors from from Vogueand WhoWhatWear.
As a self-confessed serial intern, Levin generously shared her top tips for interning success.
What you take away from your experience will be a direct reflection of what you put into it. Show initiativeand ask for things to do, instead of waiting around to be given a task. I love interns who proactively work on projects that are beneficial to our organization; that really stands out.
This all leaves us thinking, whats so great aboutSoho House?

Angels CF Mike Trout to take regular batting practice on Friday – FanRag Sports (blog)
Posted: at 5:23 pm
Despite the fact that the Los Angeles Angels have survived without having the best player in baseball on the field, the American League West ball club is getting closer to welcoming back starting center fielder Mike Trout or so it appears. The Angels recently revealed that Trout would be taking regular batting practice alongside his teammates on Friday.
Although no concrete timetable for his eventual return has been set, it seems as though Trouts injured left thumb is responding well after surgery.
He swung the bat 100 percent and said it feels good, said Angels manager Mike Scioscia, via ESPN. Its an important step [on Friday]. Hell hit on the field, get his batting practice underway and see how he responds.
The prolific center fielder has remained out of the Angels lineup since all the way back on May 29 after injuring himself as the result of a head-first slide into second base. With the setback ultimately leading to surgery, Trout suffered both a torn ulnar collateral ligament and dorsal capsule in his left thumb against the Miami Marlins.
Spending his entire seven-year big league career in Los Angeles, the 25-year-old slugger has already made 47 regular-season appearances for the Angels thus far into the 2017 campaign. Over the course of 163 at-bats, he has compiled a .337 batting average with 16 home runs and 36 RBIs alongside a .461 on-base percentage.
For his big league career, Trout has amassed a .308 batting average in addition to 184 home runs, 533 RBIs and a .408 on-base percentage. As it stands today, he has made 858 regular-season appearances atop the highest level en route to receiving 3,160 at-bats in all.

Poll: Majority of Trump Voters Say His Political Correctness Is ‘About … – Morning Consult
Posted: at 5:22 pm
When President Donald Trump uses the term politically correct, its meant to be an insult and not one many Americans would redirect at him.
A recent Morning Consult poll shows that a plurality of U.S. adults (45 percent) say Trump is not politically correct enough, while 55 percent say the country has become less politically correct during his administration.
But most of Trumps supporters dont see a problem: Sixty-two percent of people who voted for him in November said the presidents political correctness is about right. Among Democrats, 67 percent said hes not politically correct enough.
Forty-eight percent of women and 42 percent of men said Trump is not politically correct enough. No demographic had a plurality or majority saying Trump is too politically correct.
Polling was conducted among a national sample of 2,177 U.S. adults on June 20 and June 21, before Trump tweetedcritical remarks about MSNBC Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski and her physical appearance.
As a candidate, Trump was accused of espousing anti-Muslim views, among other complaints from minority groups. On Monday, the Supreme Court agreed to review the White Houses travel ban that was initiated but halted earlier this year, while allowing for a 90-day ban on travelers from six predominantly-Muslim countries to go into effect so long as it exempts people who have a close familial relationship with someone in the United States.
Public opinion regarding political correctness shifted in the recent Morning Consult poll when people were asked about the mainstream media, with 41 percent saying the media is too politically correct. Forty-eight percent of men and 35 percent of women agreed with that statement. A plurality of millennials (34 percent) say the media is too politically correct, while 27 percent say its about right and 27 percent its not politically correct enough. Pluralities of other generations also said the media is too politically correct.
Thirty-three percent, a plurality, saycorporationsare too politically correct, while 35 percent consider sports franchises about right. A Morning Consult poll conductedFeb. 2 through Feb. 4showed poll respondentswere split over corporations taking a positionon a social or political issue, but were more inclined to say it is inappropriate when a business usesits resources to make its values visible.

Inclusion of personal correspondence in evolution paper prompts retraction, new journal policy – Retraction Watch (blog)
Posted: at 5:20 pm
Hearsay is not admissible as evidence in court and it doesnt seem to go very far in science, either.
A pair of researchers in the field of human evolution have lost a paper which contained data from personal correspondence that the providing party apparently did not enjoy seeing in print.
The article, Early hominin biogeography in Island Southeast Asia, was published in the September/October 2015 issue of Evolutionary Anthropology. The authors, Roy Larick and Russell Ciochon, are paleoanthropologists and co-founders of the Iowa-Bandung Java Project a 20-year old collaborative effort to study the origins of early humans in Indonesia.
Per the retraction notice:
The above article from Evolutionary Anthropology, published on 19 October 2015 in Wiley OnlineLibrary (www.onlinelibrary.wiley.com), and in Volume 24, Number 5, pp. 185-213, has been retracted by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The retraction has been made due to the inclusion without explicit permission of unpublished third-party research data disclosed to the authors in personal correspondence. The Editor notes that the journal has since clarified its policy on citing unpublished research findings, and in particular those disclosed in personal correspondence, to avoid future instances of this nature.
John Fleagle, who edits Evolutionary Anthropology, referred us to the writers guidelines page for the new policy:
Because Evolutionary Anthropology is primarily a review journal, we discourage the use of Personal Communications as citations. If Personal Communications, or any other unpublished materials are cited, the author(s) must include a copy of the communication stating the evidence cited and giving the author(s) permission to use the observations.
This is the journals first-ever retraction.
Larick provided a bit more information about the article in an email:
The issue of communicated data arose after publication. We were surprised with the issue and especially with the demand for retraction. We were yet more surprised that Wiley retracted the paper on the grounds cited. Through two lawyers, one in Iowa City and one in New York, we attempted to develop a solution not involving retraction. Our biggest surprise was that Wiley seemed determined to retract under any circumstance.
We have not yet decided on how to proceed with the paper, which is a review of literature and current ideas. Much of the communicated data (citations of personal communication) has now been published.
The Evolutionary Anthropology paper is a synthesis of our work integrated with other current research, especially that of the Australians. So much good material was on the verge of publication as we were finishing the paper in 2015. We relied on personal communications to bring new studies to light. We had made our intentions clear to our colleagueseveryone knew about this paper. With hindsight, we pushed personal communication a little too far. As an aside, neither the editor nor any of the five reviewers expressed concern about our citations.
It is our great disappointment that the paper could not be kept published with accommodations to the offended scientists. We feel that our case lies well outside the standard (an necessary) reasons for retracting scientific papers.
The paper has been cited once, according toClarivate Analytics Web of Science.
