Touchdown! Seychelles Tourism creates awareness at Durban rugby event
Every opportunity that helps Seychelles to be in the limelight counts!
That is exactly what a team from Alphonse Island, the Seychelles Tourism Board and Air Seychelles showcased in Durban, South Africa, last week.
A big rugby test match between South Africa and France provided the perfect opportunity for them to bring some warm Seychellois cheer to the game, while networking and promoting the island destinations tourism products.
Several tour operators and travel agents already selling Seychelles, as well as friends of Alphonse Island and past guests of the island were invited to the event.
The guests met at the hospitality suite before the test match where the well-represented Alphonse Island team were all hands on deck to promote their products. The Tourist office provided destination knowledge while Air Seychelles, which started flying to Durban in March this year, assisted with all the flight queries.
Guests were entertained for two hours before the big game with drinks and snacks being served, adding to the jovial atmosphere that helped beat the winter blues as the beautiful sun set and temperature dropped in the city.
The guests were then invited to join the three host partners in the comfort of the VIP suite to watch the game, which was won by the South African national rugby team the Springboks followed by dinner which brought down the curtains on this beautiful event.
The General Manager of Alphonse Island Resort, Gordon Rankin, ensured that everyone present were acquainted with the extraordinary and unique experiences that the island has to offer.
Alphonse Island one of the outlying islands of the Seychelles archipelago lies seven degrees south of the equator and 400 kilometers south-west of the main inhabited island of Mah. Only a 60-minute flight away from the main island Mah, the Alphonse atoll boasts kilometers of pristine tropical shorelines, lagoons and sea flats.
Guests to the island, from honeymooners to families, can indulge a wide range of activities from game fishing, fly fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving among others. For those not too keen on hitting the water, the natural environment also provides wonderful experiences, where one can have an encounter with some giant Aldabra tortoises.
I am extremely happy with the event because it brought many people together, to learn more on and also to share their experiences of Alphonse Island. We managed to create some big vibes here and get more people interested in the product and in Seychelles. I believe everyones expectations were exceeded today, said Mr. Rankin.
The Seychelles Tourism Board office in South Africa was represented at the event by its Director, Mrs. Lena Hoareau, who was equally pleased with the outcome of the networking event.
The atmosphere was wonderful and people were able to learn more about the Seychelles without being in a formal setting or function. Such events should be encouraged because the interest is already there. We just need to reach the right people and bring them together around a common event, said Mrs. Hoareau.
I am happy that we have partnered with Alphonse Island on this event and I wouldnt hesitate to do it again should the occasion present itself because I feel that we achieved what we set out to do. The guests were happy and certainly went back home more knowledgeable about Seychelles and Alphonse Island, she added.
South Africa is Seychelles main tourism market on the African Continent. Figures from the Seychelles National Bureau of Statistics show that South Africa has sent 6,017 tourists to the island nation up to June 11 of this year, which represents an increase of 22 percent when compared to last year.
Air Seychelles launched twice-weekly flights to Durban in March of this year. This is the national airlines second destination in South Africa, bringing the total number of non-stop flights between the two countries to seven per week. Air Seychelles also operates five weekly flights to Johannesburg.

Aiming for greater visibility in South Korea, Seychelles emphasizes affordable holiday options at HanaTour 2017 – eTurboNews
Posted: at 6:37 am
Seychelles the heaven you must visit before you die was the slogan used to attract visitors to the island destinations stand at the HanaTour International Travel Show 2017 in South Korea. The four-day event was held at the Kintex Exhibition center in Goyang city from the 8th to 11th June.
The opening day, dubbed a Family Day, was reserved for travel trade partners and members of the press, allowing them to visit the stands and conduct meetings with representatives of various travel destinations.
The three-day international show that followed provided the general public with the opportunity to discover the exhibits. Interested travelers could also book travel packages, while availing of special offers.
Seychelles delegation at the 11th HanaTour International Travel show comprised of the Director of Digital Marketing, Mr. Vahid Jacob and Senior Marketing Executive Mrs. Amia Jovanovic-Desir from the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) Head Office, as well as representatives of the STB Office in South Korea, headed by Ms. Julie Kim.
The Seychelles stand proved to be quite an attraction, as the delegation had found innovative and tangible ways to showcase the products on offer to the Korean visitors. In addition to photos and videos showcasing the heavenly beauty of the island destination, visitors were invited to take a sip of the delicious Vanilla tea made in Seychelles and hold the legendary coco-de-mer the largest nut in the world, also endemic to the Indian Ocean archipelago.
Additionally, visitors could partake in a social media event by taking photos at the stand, with the possibility of featuring among 20 lucky winners of a Bluetooth speaker.
Seychelles is highly reputed in the Korean market as an upper-end honeymoon destination, but we are now trying to expand the market to include affordable family holiday, niche, and incentive group travels while maintaining the luxury image. The Seychelles stand and the promotional activities were designed to appeal to this aspect, said Ms. Kim.
To emphasize the fact that Seychelles caters for the needs and taste of travelers from all market segments from celebrity extravagant to budget-friendly visitors to the Seychelles stand were reassured that the island destination also has affordable accommodation options from small guesthouses to self-catering establishments.
As interest in the destination mounted, the Seychelles delegation was also faced with numerous and frequently asked questions including where is Seychelles located? How do we get there? And why should we choose Seychelles for our holidays? This confirmed the strong need for continuous education and training of agents in key cities, so that they understand what makes Seychelles totally different from other competitive island destinations.
Focusing more on targeted promotional activities, in collaboration with solid based companies are areas that we need to strongly consider in the future, with the aim of generating promising growth and potential visitor numbers in the medium term, said Mrs. Jovanovic-Desir.
The Senior Marketing Executive believes that building a close working relationship with key partners that are pushing for twin destinations would also be a plus for Seychelles as it targets more visitors from South Korea, where they can enjoy a holiday safari combined with a dream holiday experience, surrounded by a clean and untouched environment setting.
The fact that there are adequate airlines serving the Seychelles route, presenting travelers with a wider option, it only remains for the destination to be continuously positioned as a must-visit holiday location in the minds of potential Korean travelers.
Seychelles could benefit from a good share of the market segment that our close competitors are extracting. From their facial expressions while visiting our stand it could be confirmed that the South Koreans want to explore the beauty of our magical islands. This could be achieved by increasing our visibility in key cities and tapping into the right consumer base and appropriate market segments, said Mrs. Jovanovic-Desir.
The Seychelles stand caught the attention of numerous Korean Media such as JoongAng Ilbo, MK News and The Korea Travel News among others at the HanaTour International Travel Show. Many Koreans from honeymooners to retirees also showed interest in visiting the island nation and even made reservations on the spot.
The Seychelles Tourism Boards Director of Digital Marketing, Mr. Vahid Jacob who was visiting South Korea for the first time, said he sees great potential in the South Korean market.
With a large affluent population and more than 90% of the population online, I strongly believe that we should invest more in digital marketing in this market and greatly increase visibility of the destination online. To that effect we are planning on launching several major influencer campaigns and online competitions on the market this year, said Mr. Jacob.
Hana Tour is one of the largest travel agency in South Korea and annually holds the HanaTour International Travel show, also known as HITS, at the Kintex Exhibition center in Goyang city.
This year the travel show saw the participation of almost 1,000 stands showcasing some 760 different travel destinations and companies from across the globe. The event also attracted some 100,000 visitors which was 5 percent above last years figures.

Seychelles sees 2017 GDP growth at 4.1 pct – finance minister – Times of India
Posted: at 6:37 am
NAIROBI, June 21 (Reuters) - Seychelles' economy is seen growing at 4.1 percent this year from 4.5 percent in 2016, its finance minister said, while the International Monetary Fund said performance of its tourism sector remained vulnerable to external factors.
The Indian Ocean country of 93,000 people largely depends on tourism for government revenues but has sought to promote itself as a low-tax, financial services hub.
"For 2017 the growth prospects remain favourable...as tourist arrivals continue to rise at a sustained pace, while inflation should remain subdued, on account of the stability of fuel and other commodity prices," Finance Minister Peter Larose said in a letter to the IMF released on Tuesday.
Seychelles' inflation rose to 3.18 percent year-on-year in May from -0.78 percent a month earlier.
IMF said in a separate statement that Seychelles' economy was still vulnerable to external factors that could affect its tourism sector.
"The outlook for tourist arrivals remains highly susceptible to external developments, such as weak growth in advanced and emerging market economies, weakness in the Euro, and geopolitical tensions disrupting the Middle East, Africa, and Europe," it said. A Travel Guide to Tobago, the Caribbean’s Chillest Island | GQ – GQ Magazine
Posted: at 6:36 am
Alex Treadway
Want to visit a Caribbean Island but don't feel like rubbing shoulders with hundreds of sunburned American tourists? Go to Tobago.
Perhaps youve heard of the Caribbean, the beach-filled, sunny, and resort-laden destination for cruise ships and tan-seeking vacationers? Maybe youve considered being one of those vacationers?
Heres the upside: Its easy and affordable to get there. And then the problem: Most popular spots within the Caribbeanlike Turks and Caicos and Saint Thomasare perpetually overrun by tourists (like you).
There is, luckily, an alternative to packing yourself into a Caribbean beach filled with hundreds of other sunscreen-soaked Americans. Let me introduce you to Tobago, the lesser-known sibling island to Trinidad. Its the place you go when you want to sit on a quiet beach in the Caribbean and not be surrounded by yachts or spring breakers. From a lot of major cities, theres a direct flight to Trinidad; from there, just hop on a quick 15-minute flight (very cheap and leaves every 30 minutes), and youre in Tobago.
The island is intimate, the culture is chill, the locals are friendly, and its very easy to get around. Super developed, Tobago is not. Compared with its Caribbean cousins, the place is bare of malls and brand-name hotels. Youre coming to Tobago, instead, because youre looking for unadulterated nature and a slow-going place to laze on the beach with friends.
And because its not yet a tourist town, the food caters to the localsmeaning youre not getting watered-down resort fare. Youll find spicey and chile-laden goat curry spots, as well as Italian food in tree houses, excellent takeout kebab, and freshly grilled seafood served beachside.
Tobago is so low-key that there are essentially no travel books available on the country. So heres your beginners guide to the Caribbean gem.
There are some hotels and resorts on the island, but most are still pretty rudimentary. Your best bet for comfy digs is to rent a condo or a house on HomeAway or VRBO, which will likely be both less expensive and more comfortable than the area hotels. Go for the properties right on the beach.
Like most beach vacations, Tobago is best experienced in five days to a week. Lucky for those who have to endure chilly winters, the best time to visit is between January and March, when the weather there is temperate and not too humid.
Spend a chill day at the beach The beaches in Tobago are pristineyou cant go wrong making a pit stop at whatever beaches you spot in your area. The most popular is Mount Irvine Beach, adjacent to a golf course and known for its excellent surfing. Englishmans Bay is another good option, a crescent-shaped beach where you can spot leatherback turtles chilling on the sands. If youre looking for hidden treasure, drive 45 minutes up to Castara, a tiny but stunning spot with gorgeous views of the forests below.
Visit Pigeon Point Heritage Park This family-friendly enclave offers multiple activities in one spotthere are cute little shops, lots of great cafes for snacking, and a lifeguard-tended beach area, complete with a highly Instagrammable thatched-roof jetty.
Go around Buccoo Reef Book a glass-bottom boat from Pigeon Point Heritage Park, and you can spend a day going around Buccoo Reef, a designated marine park containing hundreds of colorful species of fish and coral (Jacques Cousteau named it the third most spectacular reef in the world). Theres loads to see, so its the ideal spot to go snorkeling. Make sure your boat makes a stop at the surreal Nylon Pool, a one-meter deep enclave in the middle of the reef whose sheer waters and white sand prompted Britains Princess Margaret to name the pool after her nylon stockings.
Hike through the Tobago Forest Reserve As the oldest protected forest reserve in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is the spot to go on a hike in Tobago. The main trek is short and accessible, weaving through a few miles of untouched forest. Its worth hiring a trained guide who can point out the various herbs, spices, and native fruit trees that are abundant throughout the trail. The hike ends at Argyle Falls, where you can lounge in natural rock tubs surrounded by idyllically green trees.
Doubles Truck Doubles Truck is what I am calling the unmarked white van that parks outside a clothing shop called Chadijas around lunchtime, serving up one of the signature dishes of the island: doubles. Its a messy dish of two interlocking pieces of fried dough filled with mildly sweet stewed chickpeas and a generous dousing of green chile sauce. Theyre wrapped in white paper and cost about 20 cents a pop. Wash yours down with fresh coconut water from the fruit stand a few feet away.
Kariwak Village A very vibe-y open-air restaurant with a thatched roof serving Caribbean food thats all made from the on-site garden. Get the spicy crab stew and be prepared to go home very satisfied, but with chile and turmeric stains all over your shirt.
Jemma's Seaview Kitchen Treehouse Located right on the beach, this picturesque spot specializes in seafood prepared Caribbean style: fish thats been breaded, fried, and dressed in a tangy sweet-and-sour sauce; curried goat; and shrimp drenched in herbs and garlic then grilled over an open fire.
La Tartaruga An Italian restaurant situated in a tall treehouse, La Tartaruga will easily be one of the most joyful dining experiences you have in Tobago. This is thanks, in large part, to the exceedingly friendly and enthusiastic chef/owner Gabriele, who treats every guest like a long-lost sibling. The restaurant serves excellent Italian wines and specialties like freshly made tagliatelle dressed in pesto and potatoes, and meatballs stuffed with polenta, mozzarella, and spicy tomato sauce. It is the perfect marriage of Italian food and the breezy culture of Tobago.
Skewers This is a local haunt for kebabs (the best are the lamb and the chicken), which are ideal for lunch and dinner to goor a late-night snack. The meats are grilled til exceedingly juicy, the herby salads are fresh and fragrant, and though the food is decidedly Middle Eastern, it has pleasant local toucheslike the various handcrafted hot sauces made with the fruity peppers of the region.

Bahamas Bowl Hosts Its Annual Summer Summit – Bahamas Tribune
Posted: at 6:36 am
By RENALDO DORSETT
Tribune Sports Reporter
THE Bahamas Bowl hosted its annual summer summit in preparation for the December matchup and it is expected that the fourth edition will continue the trend of creating an impact on the NCAA bowl season.
Various stakeholders of the event, including the Bowl Committee, ESPN Events, The Ministry of Tourism, the National Sports and Authority, delivered their reports on the previous matchup and expectations for the upcoming year at the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl Summit.
Pete Derzis, senior vice president and general manager of ESPN Events, said his organisation has sought to create a symbiotic relationship between local and international stakeholders.
The Bahamas Bowl gives a chance to host two teams in a world-class destination, in a world-class resort, with world-class hospitality that is second nature to the Bahamian people. With the improvements we have experienced with the new field, the feedback from the teams last year was just tremendous.
The local team has done a wonderful job in really fulfilling fantasy. The Atlantis is second to none and we always see a wow factor look on the faces of the students, coaches, parents and support staff that comes. This would not be possible without the key stakeholders, to stage a game of this magnitude.
The Ministry of Tourism has been a tremendous part of what we have done in crafting it and really opening it up to the schools in the United States. These types of events arent possible if it is not a fair value exchange. Those dollars get ploughed right back into this economy and that is something that is very important to us. At ESPN, we televise it nationally, in millions of households and it also goes internationally to 40-50 countries. We have created a great platform here for a lot of people to benefit and those that participate benefit the most because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
ESPN is in year three of a six-year commitment since they added the bowl to its staple of events in 2015.
The bowl was acquired from Bahamas Bowl, LLC, which owned the inaugural game in 2014.
This year, the game is scheduled for 12:30 pm on Friday, December 22, in an effort to take full advantage of the long holiday weekend.
We are three years through our original six-year commitment as it relates to the bowl game and we are really looking forward to this being a long-term proposition, not just a six year one, Derzis said, From an economic standpoint we have been really pleased with our growth year after year - a 3$3.5 million direct impact in the Bahamas, about 2300 hotel rooms, during the course of the bowl so we are making a lot of progress and meeting a lot of the guidelines that we have planned.
Howard Karawan, President and Managing Director of Atlantis Paradise Island, said the event serves multiple purposes, including creating business opportunities and exposure for the Bahamas.
Exposure for a sporting event needs to be the icing on the cake and we get great exposure internationally. As important as exposure, or even more so, primarily is bringing thousands of visitors to the island and to Atlantis. Those visitors go back and tell their friends and family and that is really our objective and I think we share that objective with the ministry of tourism, that is to do events that brings business here because in the ends its dollars spent in the islands and getting people to experience our wonderful culture because word of mouth really is what drives tourism, he said, That is why we have made a commitment to the Bahamas Bowl moving forward because we see this as a long-term solid foundation at a time of the year that is not very busy. During the game and the week before is a slow time so its a perfect time for us to bring people here. But its not just about experiencing the Atlantis, but experiencing the Bahamas, integrating the cultural offerings in food, art and music because people arent coming here for an American experience.
Joy Jibrilu, Director General of the Ministry of Tourism said the game is transitioning into a staple of the Bahamian Christmas season.
One of the things I enjoy is listening to the players at the press conferences when they come down because they always mention that Its a dream come true, its a dream destination and that is the type of energy we want to hear and we want repeated. We reached 91 million households in the Untied States and the event has created great excitement because of the things that happen so we look forward to more of that taking place. We have had highly successful games in the past three years and we expect nothing less this year, she said, It is interesting to me to think that American football is becoming a part of the Bahamian Christmas and so in addition to Junkanoo and Christmas shopping, everyone is adding college football to it.
Jeffrey Beckles, NSA General Manager, the fourth edition of the Bahamas Bowl will come on the heels of a busy 2017 for Sports Tourism and the NSA will be ready with further improvements to infrastructure.
By the time the Bahamas Bowl comes around in December we would have hosted three regional events and three world events. That would given us a tremendous head start on the improvements we have committed too when we host this football game. We are happy to announce that we have just completed our brand new 6.5 acre open field in addition to the TAR. The original stadium has undergone a complete rehab so the team will have fill access to all fields. Every time you come to the Bahamas you will see some expression of our commitment to hosting these events.
Crowds of over 13,000 each year in Nassau have watched the only current bowl game played outside of the United States.
The inaugural game in 2014 saw WKU beat Central Michigan 49-48 in a memorable offensive shootout. In 2015, Western Michigan beat Middle Tennessee 45-31 and last year, Old Dominion held off Eastern Michigan 24-20.
As with the first three editions, the 2017 Bahamas Bowl will feature teams from Conference USA and the Mid-American Conference. For more information on the Bowl, visit BahamasBowl.com. The game is one of 13 postseason bowl games owned and operated by ESPN Events, a division of ESPN.

Public Service Minister Brenzil Rolle recently told Parliament that the public service increased by 6, 500 people during the last term.
NASSAU, The Bahamas, Thursday June 22, 2017 Just six weeks after coming to office, the Dr Hubert Minnis administration in the Bahamas has slapped a freeze on hiring in the public service.
The moves comes on the heels of damning revelations from Dr Minnis this week that the former Progressive Liberal Party engaged in a US$14 million wild hiring spree in the last five months leading up theMay 10general elections.
The Government issued a directive to the departmental heads this week that there would be no new hires in the public service unless it was absolutely critical.
A June 19 letter, issued by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service Elise Delancy and obtained by the Nassau Guardian newspaper, read: Please be advised that effective immediately, there should be no new hires or renewal of contracts except where there is a critical need. Under such circumstances, the approval of Cabinet will be required.
Delancy also stressed that the authority to appoint workers solely rests with the Ministry of the Public Service and the Public Service Commission.
Public Service Minister Brenzil Rolle recently told Parliament that the public service increased by 6, 500 people during the last term without any consideration given to whether the Government was able to pay them.
Every minister hired whomever they wished, at whatever rank they wished, he said.
Rolles charges were also backed by Prime Minister Minnis who added that contractual workers were also engaged in addition to permanent employees.
Between December 2016 and the 9thof May, 2017, 648 persons were brought on at a cost of $10,149,738.40. In April alone, 119 were hired at a cost of $1.9 million and in May, the cost of new hires was $2.5 million, he said.

Air guns used in offshore oil exploration can kill tiny marine life … – Nature.com
Posted: at 6:36 am
Christian slund/Greenpeace
A ship operates an air gun array while looking for oil deposits off the coast of Greenland.
Powerful sound waves created during offshore surveys for oil and gas can kill microscopic animals at the base of the ocean food chain, according to a new study. And these lethal effects travel much farther than ecologists had previously assumed. Researchers fear that damage to these animals, collectively known as zooplankton, could harm top predators and commercially important species of fish that depend on such species for food.
Seismic surveys blast compressed air to produce pulses of sound that can probe the sea floor thousands of metres down for natural resources. At 220250 decibels, the pulses produced by these air guns are louder than a Saturn V rocket during launch. Scientists have known for decades that whales and other marine mammals that use sound to communicate change their behaviour in response to such noise1. There is increasing evidence that seismic surveys also affect fish2 and marine invertebrates3. And now, researchers have found that the noise from air-gun blasts can kill zooplankton at distances of up to 1.2 kilometres away more than two orders of magnitude farther than previously thought. They reported their results4 on 22 June in Nature Ecology and Evolution.
We were quite gobsmacked, says lead author Jayson Semmens, a marine biologist at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, Australia.
Semmens and his team conducted their study off the southeastern coast of Tasmania in 2015. They used sonar and nets to assess populations of zooplankton, including krill larvae and tiny crustaceans called copepods, before and after firing a series of air-gun shots. The team found that zooplankton abundance dropped by 64% within one hour of the blasts. And the proportion of dead zooplankton increased by 200300% as far away as 1.2 kilometres the maximum distance the researchers sampled. This suggests that the impact of the blasts could extend well beyond such distances, Semmens says.

Sea urchin larvae are one of many zooplankton groups harmed by air gun blasts.
Dead bodies in net tows don't lie, says Doug Nowacek, a marine ecologist at Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina, who was not involved in the study. He suggests the next question for researchers is figuring out what this means for the ocean ecosystem. If you start impacting the zooplankton population, that can cause a serious cascade through the food web.
The results come as US President Donald Trump proposes opening up large swathes of the Atlantic coast of the United States to seismic surveys. The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is considering permit requests from six companies to conduct seismic surveys that were denied under former President Barack Obama. As part of that process, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) must also evaluate permit requests from those companies since their proposed activities could affect marine mammals. The NOAA permit requests are open for public comment until 6 July.
Although it's unclear if the companies will be able to start seismic surveys, initiating the permit process is part of a larger effort laid out in an executive order that Trump issued in April to expand US offshore energy development.
The study didn't pin down precisely how air-gun blasts kill zooplankton, Semmens says, but the noise they produce probably damages the highly sensitive hair-like receptors that the animals use to navigate. The blast might not kill them all directly, but it could disorient them and make it harder for them to survive.
Semmens is planning a follow-on study with a full seismic air gun set-up similar to that used in industrial activities to determine how far the effects of the noise extend. He and his team also want to look at what these blasts do to zooplankton physically. Although most research has focused on the impact of air-gun blasts on marine mammals, Semmens notes, perhaps its the invertebrates that are most at risk. It could be that our focus has kind of been blinkered because its been on whales, he says. Invertebrates are the forgotten ones.
