5 of the World’s Most Mind-Bending Drug Cultures – National Geographic Australia

Posted: at 3:47 am

A strong stigma in the West bullies our idea of drug culture, fueled by perceptions of mind-altering substances, man-made chemical compounds, and destroyed communities. But throughout the world, spiritual practitioners' use of entheogenspsychoactive substances applied in religious or shamanic contextsis nothing short of a learned art, unique to the people and regions whove studied it for centuries.

Their ultimate goal isnt a supreme high but a realisation of the supreme, wherein an individual ingests a plant with psychoactive properties in order to have a conversation with or listen to it. Its a captivating notion, to be one with nature, driven by the need to sustain a relationship with an ancient voice and to absorb its knowledge.

Outgrowths of corruption and violence are evidence of high human costs. But the draw to the substances is so powerful that its also compelled interested outsiders to become active partakers, creating a whirlwind of well-documented drug tourism, and, consequently, the commercialization and commodification of religion, threatening not only the practices themselves but also, in some cases, the plants central to them.

Its tricky to toe the line when travelinghow to experience a place without actually reaching out and swallowing it whole. We have the inclination to stay in neighbourhood apartments over chain hotels, to seek out street food in lieu of pricey restaurants, to do as the locals dowhatever it is that theyre doing. Somewhere therein, lines of responsible tourism blur. Some might say its the difference between sipping pisco sours in Cusco and cupping ayahuasca tea in Iquitos: Both give you a taste for the lands traditions, but only one has the potential to disrupt a delicate cultural ecosystem.

Here are five such ecosystems around the world, each imbued with its own tradition of entheogenic practices that have drawn curious eyes to peek through the mainstream veil. And while we cant endorse a next-level trip to Mexico to meet Mescalito in a cloud of peyote, we can say that the deserts sparkling mirages have captured our attention, too.

In Gabon, a country nearly Colorados size that straddles the equator on the west coast of Central Africa, theres a shrub that blossoms with white and pink flowers and tasteless orange fruit. It isnt particularly prettyits produce nutritionally unremarkableand yet, the iboga plant is sacred, worshipped by the Babongo tribe (among others) that discovered its uniquely powerful properties some thousand years ago, when a religion called Bwiti formed around its bark.

Loosely translated, Bwiti means simply otherworldly tree medicine or the being who calls. Bwiti adherents eat the psychedelic bark for both individual spiritual growth and community fortificationbut first, its a rite of passage, an initiation into the plants spiritual wisdom and a connection to ancestral knowledge.

Revered and intense as it isthe closed-eye and waking-dream hallucinations, with effects lasting up to 48 hoursiboga requires a complex courtship. Once the root bark has been scraped off and crushed into chips or a fine powder, a ceremony unfolds under the stewardship of a Nganga, or shaman, with clapping, chanting, and complex music thats heavy on percussion. Its a communal event, with elders, healers, and even children sitting on the sidelines to pay witness to whatever message might surface as iboga reveals itself, the initiate unfolding into its guidance and recounting visions aloud in real time so that the Nganga can interpret and direct the proceedings in real time.

Skin covered in a slippery film of sweaty heat, sitting in a platform hut deep in the Amazon rainforest, a shaman sings icaros, or ceremonial songs, as Pachamama, or Mother Earth, takes hold of your intestines and gives a good squeeze. And so begins the period of intense vomiting (and bouts of diarrhoea) found in most ayahuasca ceremonies, wherein physical and emotional bile is released to induce a mystifying haze of transcendental healing, characterised by wild visual and aural hallucinations that challenge limits of both love and fear for the next four to six hours.

The plant decoction is murky to the eye and not so pleasing to the tongue, made from mashed ayahuasca vine and chacruna leaves (often with jimson weed and pure jungle tobacco, called mapacho, added to incite the purge), boiled for 12 hours and blessed with sacred tobacco smoke blown over and into the cauldron by a shaman. The compound of two Quechua words (though with Spanish spelling), ayahuasca means vine of souls or rope of the dead, depending on interpretation. As the name suggests, its a powerful entity calling to Pachamama, a central figure to the indigenous and mestizo populations who have invited herin all her formsinto their bodies for centuries.

In the torrid deserts of northeastern Mexico and southern Texas, people dig the land for a small, thornless cactus said to have untold powers of sight that it shares with those brave and strong enough to greet it. You dont take peyoteit takes you.

Mescalito, as the hallucinogenic cactus was later personified, has shown himself to Aztecs, Mexican Indians, and Native Americans for more than 5,000 years as a centrepiece in cultural and religious practices. While the ceremonies may vary, theyre often communal, with a shaman guiding a group through special peyote songs as together they ingest the dried cactus buttons. Over the course of 10 to 12 hours, hallucinations (and bouts of violent vomiting for novices) transport the user through both space and time and across a range of emotions, where challenging or fearful interactions might linger in the shadows. The reverence it commands borders on fearful, the promise of enlightenment and respect for peyotes power neither dramatised nor undersold.

Arguably one of the most mellow entheogens, kava (also known as kava-kava or yaqona, nourishment of the gods) is the only substance in this article thats legal in the United States for use outside of religious contexts. Known for its peacemaking properties across the Pacific Islands, including Hawaii, Vanuatu, and Fiji, kava is an intrinsic part of traditional Polynesian life, used in everything from the sacred to the social. It acts as a mediator or spiritual messenger between people and the Vu, or spirit forcewithout kava, its said, the Vu wont show up.

The leafy plants long, gnarled roots can be fresh or dried then pounded, chewed, or otherwise pulverised to make the opaque, milky drink. It purrs in the belly, stoking an odd mix of tranquility and euphoria while sustaining a sharp mind. Prolonged consumption, however, engulfs the kava drinker in a canopy of mental stillness, a sort of amiable waking sleep. But one needs to approach the kava stupor in the right mindsetlike asking it for directions or meditating on a questionto be guided purposely by its warmth.

In the 1950s, a centuries-old Mazatec tradition in Oaxaca trickled through its historic guard and into the mouths of two Americans, who brought word of their profound experiences back home in a now-famous Life photo essay. And thus began a widespread, tempestuous affair with psilocybin mushrooms, the psychedelic fungi that Timothy Leary so famously championed for its psychological and religious properties in the Harvard Psilocybin Project and beyond.

In its unadulterated form, the Mazatec custom, which is shared by other pre-Columbian Mesoamerican peoples, serves a medicinal purpose, healing physical, mental, and ethical maladies. Like ayahuasca and peyote, the mushrooms are honoured for their capacity to guide users beyond their prescribed realities, to break open convention and incite perspective, introducing novel conduits for compassion and empathy for both themselves and the world. The sacred ritual is communal in Mazatec practice, the mushrooms bathed in smoke from copal incense then eaten two at a time to represent the duality and power of the unified sexes. Together, participants share the darkness and silence of a hut, the shaman the groups designated voice, a channel through which the mushrooms issue their chatterand as it happens, they have a lot to say.

Here’s Why Cyberpunk 2077 Could Feature New Engine Advancements, Animals And Creatures – One Angry Gamer (blog)

Posted: at 3:45 am

(Last Updated On: May 5, 2017)

Ive been seeing quite a bit of comments recently around various forum boards saying that Cyberpunk 2077 is well past its initial stages, which is likely false. With a new job hiring posted for CD Projekt Reds upcoming Sci-Fi RPG, lets take a look at why the 2012 version of Cyberpunk 2077 was likely scrapped/reworked and how animals and creatures will be in the game courtesy of a job post by CDPR on May 4th.

I know what Im about to bring up may bore some people, but I need to use something as reference to kinda drive a point: You see, CD Projekt Red upgraded the once old REDengine 3 to the brand new REDengine 4. So what does that mean? A lot had to be scrapped.

This is the part where I may lose some folks, but a game that we cover on this very site named War of Rights went through the same engine changes. The team shifted from the CRYENGINE 3 to the CRYENGINE 5 and a lot had to be reworked almost from the ground up. Switching engines takes precise calculations in that you cant just do it too early nor do you want to do it too late. The post by the developers behind War of Rights, Campfire Games, update sits below:

But what exactly is and means an engine upgrade? How does it benefit the development of the game and thus also you, the players?

Ever since the first release of the Technical Alpha, weve been using the final CRYENGINE 3 version (at the time offered through Steam). This version of the game engine is nearly a year old now and since Crytek, the creators of the engine, is one of the technological leaders of the industry, the engine has naturally evolved quite a bit in that timeframe. Timing in regards as to when to upgrade is also a considerable factor. We feel like now is the right time to upgrade as CRYENGINE 5 is getting ever more stable and our amount of code written is still manageable (the further along a game is in development the harder it generally is to upgrade the game engine).

Meaning if the devs made the switch with Cyberpunk 2077 back in 2012, not all that much was done to do such a switch. Heres a link to the page explaining changes to WoR engine, which is accompanied by an image showing the act of changing code.

This coincides with the most recent notice indicating that the Polish government granted CD Projekt Red $7 million for building new tech with an aim to release the game sometime between 2018-2019, and if the dev team wants to they can prolong the use of the grant to release the game in 2021. The grant is also being used to help upgrade the RED Engine 4.

This also links into what CDPRs Visual Effects Artist, Jose Teixeira, had noted to Kotaku (archive.is) back in 2016 when he stated that

I mentioned that we were upgrading the engine based on the feedback everybody gave from The Witcher 3, Texiera said. Were upgrading the engine. Its a pretty thorough upgrade. Almost every aspect of the engine is getting upgraded. My particle effects editor is getting upgraded, as is almost every other tool.

When I use the word scrapped think of it as a building with an old exterior but with an all new interior except replace the interior with game code. In other words the code that was put in place back in 2012 or 2013 is more than likely gone and replaced with more stable and less janky code. Model files (although it was a CGI trailer) are likely to stay like the ones seen below.

Moreover, as of May 4th, the developers posted up on their Twitter account that they are now looking for Gameplay Animators, Cinematic Animators and experienced Animators.

Now it was noted in a previous report sometime back by SlimLarnaout that CDPR handles things differently and goes about creating things in an unconventional way at times (but not always), which includes putting together the official trailer released back in 2013. So this means that nearly anything could be going on with the game while the devs are looking for Gameplay Animators, Cinematic Animators and experienced Animators. With that said heres the new job listing description:

CD PROJEKT RED is looking for an exceptional, talented and experienced Cinematic Animator to join our outstanding team. Person on this position will be responsible for character animation in cutscenes and dialogs, so good acting skills are necessary. You will also be responsible for the preparation of mocap materials, their dynamics and overall quality as well as for the implementation of animations into the game.

In addition to the above, we get a hint that four-legged robots and creature will be in the game as well as animals and stuff that are referenced in the new job listings:

Were giving animators a lot of freedom in terms of creativity we have our own motion capture studio and animate everything in-house. Youll have a shot not only at animating humanoids and animals, but also machines and creatures that are a real challenge to bring to life. At RED,every animator is responsible for a piece of the project, so you feel youre a a part of things. If youve been looking for change, you just found it!

You read right, there will be four-legged animals and creatures which that are further elaborated on in the job listing:

Experience in animation bipedal / quadruped characters and other organic and inorganic forms.

If I had to give a wild guess though please take this with a grain of salt the devs are reworking code and getting ready to make a trailer for E3 or something due to the hiring of an Event Manager so that they can move on finishing up the gutted code from 2012 and implement it manually through the REDengine 4 as we speak. This could make the road going forward next year (or in 2019) much easier when tackling more complex mechanical or graphics implementations.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set to come out when its ready.

Combination delivers improved freight visibility and faster inventory turns, partners say.

By DC Velocity Staff

Logistics software provider FourKites Inc. will integrate its real-time tracking and shipping visibility tool with transportation management system (TMS) software from BluJay Solutions under the terms of a partnership announced Tuesday. Supply chain execution software vendor BluJay is the firm founded from the combination of Kewill Inc. and LeanLogistics Inc. after the former rivals merged in 2016. BluJay has now launched a supply chain automation platform called the Global Trade Network that creates a single point of access to the services of carriers, shippers, forwarders, suppliers, and logistics service providers (LSPs), the company says.

Bringing together BluJay's TMS with FourKites' real-time freight visibility and orchestration platform can deliver reduced wait times, fewer stock-outs, and faster inventory turns, the companies say.

"Our clients are always looking for cost-effective visibility of their freight in transit," BluJay Solutions' Chief Commercial Officer Dan Vertachnik said in a release. "With the help of FourKites, we're able to rapidly deliver a comprehensive solution. FourKites' ability to track shipments across multiple modes, including truckload, LTL, parcel, rail, and intermodal, enhances the value to our customers with greater visibility and exception management for all loads and shipments."

FourKites has been growing quickly in recent weeks, announcing in April that it had extended its integration with JDA Software Group Inc.'s TMS solution in a partnership with SMC3 Inc. to support greater supply chain visibility and orchestration.

FourKites, with headquarters in Manchester, U.K., and a U.S. office in Chelmsford, Mass., is a member of the contentious and fast-growing sector of supply chain software vendors offering real-time freight tracking capabilities, alongside firms like 10-4 Systems Inc. and MacroPoint LLC.

TMS: A radical treatment for depression – Irish Examiner

Posted: at 3:44 am

Have you heard of TMS? It stands for transcranial magnetic stimulation and, according to reports, could offer hope to people with clinical depression when other treatments havent helped.

It was invented in Sheffield the 1980s and has been used to treat a number of mental and physical health conditions, including OCD, anorexia, tinnitus and fibromyalgia but studies suggest up to 70% of people with clinical depression could benefit from it.

Treatments usually centre around talking therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and antidepressant medicines.

For severe depression that hasnt improved with other treatments, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), where an electric current is applied to the brain under general anaesthetic, is sometimes used.

TMS is a much more acceptable intermediary treatment between medication and ECT, says consultant psychiatrist Dr Leigh Neal, medical director of the Smart TMS clinic in London.

It involves a sea change of how well treat people in the future and the outcomes for depression.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

TMS simply involves a magnetic head, which converts electricity into a magnetic field, being placed against the scalp.

The magnetic field sets up electrical circuits in the brain, affecting only a tiny area.

The region of the brain targeted depends on the condition being treated for depression, its the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), where theres reduced activity in people with the condition.

Scans find that the beneficial effects of TMS propagate through to the deeper areas, so all the depression circuit is beneficially affected, says Dr Neal, who explains the electrical stimulation causes changes within the brain related to chemicals and neuroplasticity (the ability of neurons to connect to each other).

It causes more connectivity between nerves in the brain, an increase in the amount of neural activity, and an increase in the amount of neurotransmitters like serotonin.

One treatment lasts about 40 minutes, and is given daily for between 10 and 30 sessions.

WHO CAN HAVE TMS?

TMS is not considered a treatment for temporary low mood, however; rather clinical depression diagnosed by a GP or psychiatrist, and mainly for people whove had at least two courses of antidepressants

SO HOW EFFECTIVE IS IT?

Any effect of TMS on depression is gradual, and there are some people for whom it doesnt work at all.

However, trials show a recovery or remission rate after TMS of 30-40%, and another 30% get a substantial reduction in symptoms.

A review of 40 randomised controlled trials, including 1,592 patients with depression treated by repetitive TMS or sham stimulation, showed a significant effect in favour of TMS.

Patient responses were positive, describing significant benefits to their quality of life.

Dr Neal notes that people become more positive and sociable after a course of TMS: Youre not just seeing a reduction in mood, youre seeing people brighten up and become more energised a qualitative difference you dont see with antidepressants.

Logistics IT Provider Earns Recognition Alongside Industry Leaders and Burnishes Reputation as a Trusted, Proven Cloud TMS Solution

Fair Lawn, NJ (PRWEB) May 05, 2017

UltraShipTMS is recognized as a notable vendor of enterprise transportation management systems and associated logistics IT solutions in Gartner's esteemed Magic Quadrant report for Transportation Management Systems. With the field of TMS providers rapidly expanding, the Gartner Magic Quadrant report has become a trusted resource for buyers seeking to differentiate between legitimate, proven-effective solutions and less complete, under-developed ones.

Four hundred and fifty providers - including a "who's-who" of TMS industry leaders - completed Gartner's research survey. Roughly one in ten respondents was included in the report due to the stringent criteria used by Gartner.

UltraShipTMS president, Nicholas Carretta said, "As the number of high volume shippers using UltraShipTMS continues to rise, we continue to invest in improving and expanding our platform beyond the expectation of the market. Inclusion in the Notable Vendors section of the Gartner Magic Quadrant report marks a milestone in this organization's growth and notoriety in the industry. We're honored to have earned the accolade."

The inclusion in the Gartner report comes amidst a flurry of national recognition for UltraShipTMS. The company was also informed this week of its status as a 2017 American Business Award Winner (the "Stevie Awards") in the category of "Best User Interface" for the UltraShipTMS platform. UltraShip's Supply Chain Collaborator blog also won a Stevie in the category, "Best Online Newsletter" for providing the consistent thought leadership indicative of the type of organization capable of earning notice by Gartner's Magic Quadrant report.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is the most visible stock index in the United States, but that doesnt make it the best. In fact, the industry standard for market watchers and institutional investors in gauging portfolio performance is the S&P 500.

The DJIA relies on just 30 stocks as a sample of large- and mega-cap firms, dwarfed by the 500 contained in the S&P 500, and it also weights its returns using an outdated and flawed price-weighting method. The S&P 500s weighting is based on market cap, making it a much better representation of actual market performance for large- and mega-cap stocks.
