When Will Cheap Offshore Wind Come to America? – Greentech Media (blog)

Posted: April 21, 2017 at 2:47 am

We've heard a lot about record-low prices in utility-scale solar. Get ready for more records in offshore wind. In the last two months, we've seen offshore project developers in Europe bidding for pennies per kilowatt-hour -- easily beating 2020 price estimates.

Now the Europeans want to export that learning to America. In this week's episode, we'll look at how the two markets compare -- and why some of the market and policy conditions that favor offshore wind developers in Europe don't exist in the U.S.

Then, Energy Secretary Rick Perry wants to know if renewable energy is a danger to Americas grid. His recent memo on energy markets was only a page and a half long, but it was packed with a lot of assumptions -- and we'll unpack them ourselves.

Finally, we'll discuss Plug Powers deal with Amazon. Its not just about fuel cells -- its about finding any cost advantage in the ultra-competitive retail sector.

This podcast is sponsored byKACO New Energy, a leading solar inverter company with superior engineering and unmatched customer service.

Market Currents: Crude waiting offshore in the US Gulf is rising – FuelFix (blog)

Posted: at 2:47 am

Oil is trying to recover after yesterdays shellacking, but oversupply fears still remain. As rumors and murmurscirculate about an extension to the OPEC production cut, hark, here are five things to consider in oil markets today:

1) Yesterday we mentioned how were seeing a strong influx of arrivals into the U.S. Gulf Coast from the Middle East this week (something we originally alluded to last month). This is in response to an increase in March loadingsheading to the U.S., after Middle East producers favored sending crude to Asia in January and February.

That said, while we are seeing increasing arrivals into the U.S. Gulf, it may not necessarily translate to higher imports this week. After reaching its lowest point since last September early last week, crude waiting offshore in the U.S. Gulf has been rising, up over 9 million barrels in the last ten days:

2) Weve discussed recently herehow more Latin American and West African barrels have been heading towards Asia, pulled by favorable price spreads (i.e., Brent and WTI versus the Dubai-Oman benchmark). It is important to remember, however, that crude flows do come in the other direction.

As our ClipperData illustrate below, the U.S. receives on average one and a half million barrels each month from Southeast Asia, with the majority of this coming from Indonesia (and light sweet Minas crude at that). We also see grades from Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, which along with the Indonesian grades generally all head tothe Hawaiian islands.

We do occasionally see some Southeast Asian barrels arrive on the West Coast, however. For example, Kutubu blend from Papua New Guinea was discharged at BPs Ferndale refinery this month. This is the first arrival of the light crude grade to U.S. shores on our records.

3) The chart below is from this Bloomberg article, which endorses our well-worn mantra that OPEC members had the pedal to the metalat the end of last year: they exported as much as they possibly could. Hence, all of the cartels efforts in the first half of this year is being spent unwinding the impact of that exuberance.

Bloomberg uses the IEAs supply and demand projections to highlight that it will take until the end of June for OPEC production cuts to bring stockpiles back in line with Decembers level. This will leave inventories still some 200 million barrels above the 5-year average, leaving OPEC a lot of work still to do to achieve their goal. From this data point alone, it seems fair to assume that OPEC will roll over their production cut deal into the second half of the year.

4) The latest drilling productivity report from the EIA was particularly interesting due to it latest data on drilled but uncompleted wells (DUCs, quack). Not only are we seeing DUCsrise to a new record in the Permian Basin (hark, up 90 or 5 percent to 1864 wells), but Eagle Ford is also rising too (hark, up 26 to 1,285). The ability to bring incremental volume to market as needed only further endorses expectations for an amply-supplied domestic market going forward.

5) Finally, stat of the day comes from this article about Venezuela.Eighteen of PdVSAs 31 oil tankers were out of commission at the end of March due to either being in disrepair, or needing to be cleaned. Vessels are crude-stained, and need to be cleaned before entering foreign ports.

To make up for the lost tankers, PdVSA is leasing more than 50 tankers, at a cost of up to $1 million a month per vessel. With the oil sector accounting for ~90 percent of Venezuelas governmentrevenues, it appears both its oil sector and broader economy is spiralingout of control.

Weather Video: Sub-tropical storm to brush past NZ offshore, Surf’s up! – WeatherWatch.co.nz

Posted: at 2:47 am

A large storm is forming north of the country this weekend and early next week will track very close to East Cape. Its good news for surfers and - at this stage - good news for those impacted by recent cyclones, with this sub-tropical storm expected to remain just offshore and only brush north eastern New Zealand with a few showers and a period of easterly quarter winds.

The low is sizeable - which is why it will be creating some big swells along the North Islands east coast, surfers will be stoked. But - we have to point out, these swells are sizaeable making for dangerous beach conditions, rips and currents, large waves etc. So to most people we suggest you stay on land in the east of the North Island.

But its high pressure that is likely to dominate this weekend across most regions.

Later next week more rain may be coming towards the entire country, which we touch on in our latest weather video.

JOHANNESBURG - Panicky investors should resist the urge to send money offshore amid domestic economic uncertainty, but should be well diversified, say experts.

In past times of uncertainty, South Africans had rushed to take money offshore and then lost out when the rand recovered and the economy stabilised, said Lance Solms, MD of iTransact, an exchange-traded products investment platform.

Financial advice is of critical importance. Investors should not panic and should collect as much information as possible before investing offshore.

Wayne Sorour, head of Old Mutual International SA, said that for diversification purposes and considering the small size of SAs economy, individuals should have at least 30% of their investable assets in offshore investments, across countries, sectors and currencies.

Cinnabar Investment Management CEO Alex Funk said investors who were seeking currency gains would get sufficient offshore exposure via the JSEs Top 40.

The exchanges Top 40 index generates about 65% of earnings in foreign currencies.

Any investment in the JSE pays out in rand, so while an investment in the Top 40 hedges against weak domestic equity market returns, it does not make hard currency available, Sorour said.

Whether or not investors needed access to hard currency depended on where they planned to live and retire, as well as factors such as whether they wanted to travel extensively or educate their children overseas.

South Africans who planned to stay in the country needed to consider that their liabilities most notably retirement income were in rands, said Funk.

It is very difficult to maintain that liability in a foreign currency due to potential timing risk, he said.

In terms of exchange control rules, South Africans can invest up to R11-million offshore annually: R1-million on a discretionary basis and up to R10-million with foreign exchange and tax clearance from the South African Reserve Bank and the South African Revenue Service, respectively.

In terms of Regulation 28 of the Pension Funds Act, retirement funds can invest a maximum of 25% of their total funds under management in offshore assets.

South Africans with significantly more investable assets could apply for a special concession to breach the R11m limit, said Sorour.

Some large South African banks offered offshore bank accounts, while local asset managers made it possible to invest directly offshore via feeder funds, he said. Returns earned in these funds could be paid into foreign bank accounts or converted into rand and paid into domestic bank accounts.

Meanwhile, asset swap funds allowed investors to get offshore exposure without having to get tax clearance. However, these funds were paid out in randand had higher tax implications, as capital gains tax was levied on total returns and not only on hard currency returns, said Sorour.

To avoid having investment returns taxed twice, South Africans needed to invest in jurisdictions that had tax treaties with SA, said Solms.

Ensure your investments arent subject to two different types of estate law, as this can make repatriation difficult.

This illicit oil is then merged with that of the legal stream of producers and is openly sold in the primary markets of Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Bryan Abell, the West African operations director for seaborne security firm Six Maritime, says the largest part of Nigerias oil black market consists of "organised criminal rackets backed by corrupt political elites ... [that have] brokered deals with the regions oil majors and security forces".

But small opportunistic gangs are in a better position to ride out the depressed oil price.

Lacking political patronage and links to corrupt oil industry officials, they "instead rely on criminal wit to crack oil pipelines, loot vessels and collect abduction ransoms. With negligible operating costs and no illicit bureaucracy or shareholders to answer to, these groups can more easily adapt to market forces and exploit additional revenue streams".

Osinowo believes there is a deficit of 58 offshore patrol vessels for the Gulf, but he says naval deterrents need to be backed by "targeted economic development on the coast".

Reuters noted in a report this month that a spike in crude oil theft in Brazil was precipitated by the worst recession on record; the same phenomenon has been reported in the US.

According to Osinowos study, Gulf maritime security would be improved by better intelligence on piracy and smuggling networks, and satellite and radar surveillance, as well as "recommended transit corridors" and "voluntary reporting areas" for legitimate shipping, which worked well off Somalia and confined countermeasures to narrower reaches of ocean.

As Europe is the primary destination for illegally caught fish, the European parliament voted in February to create a public register of its fleets fishing in foreign waters and to blacklist operators caught stealing.

This month, the EU endorsed an international ocean governance plan that promotes maritime security and sustainable fishing.

A healthier high seas vacation? Weight Watchers launches wellness cruise – Fox News

Posted: at 2:46 am

If youre the sort who makes a beeline to the all-you-can-eat buffet the moment you board a cruise ship, then MSC Cruise Lines seven-night Caribbean excursion out of Miami next month is definitely not for you.

But if youd like to return home and slip into those slacks that were a tad too tight when you left, a week aboard the luxury liner might be just the ticket.

Its a wellness cruise, a partnership between Geneva-based MSC and Weight Watchers International just the latest in a growing list of theme trips that cruise lines are offering to reach out to new customers.

Fitness travel has been booming, and it's transferring over to cruising, says Darlene Carenza, director of marketing for the travel agency CruConCruiseOutlet. The cruise lines are working hard to overcome the stigma of lack of activity.

LOST DIAMOND RING FOUND ON CARNIVAL CRUISE, REUNITED WITH OWNER MONTHS LATER

MSCs cruises have focused on health and wellness for some time, Rick Sasso, chairman of MSC North America, tells Fox News. We've had a category called wellness, and within that we have special services for those who want to indulge in a wellness experience.

Citing a popular vegan-holistic cruise, Sasso said the days of gluttony at sea are over for many travelers. The Weight Watchers venture is about changing with the times and targeting a more affluent demographic, he said.

Jeri Donovan, owner ofWell Traveled, a wellness travel agency, said shes seen an uptick in fitness and wellness travel since she started her business in 2012.

People want yoga classes, Pilates, fitness, healthy cuisine, a spa with an array of treatments and the whole focus is mind, body and soul, she said.

I just booked six millennial-aged women on a bachelorette trip. They wanted a holistic weekend. I gave them five choices.

COAST GUARD SEARCHING FOR GEORGIA MAN WHO FELL OFF CRUISE SHIP IN THE BAHAMAS

River cruises, many of which cater to American vacationers, used to be all about shopping and visiting museums, but theyve recently introduced go active excursions in Europe and Asia and on the Nile in Egypt, Donovan said.

Guests can go kayaking in France and hiking or bicycling on the Rhine, and they can take guided bike tours through Budapest. Its a reflection of our times, she said. People are trying to take control of their health.

Royal Caribbean, which currently offers a variety of fitness options that include rock wall climbing, fly wheel classes, surfing, ice-skating and roller-skating, has been the trendsetter in fitness, Carenza said, adding that Celebrity Cruises has homed in on the holistic wellness experience.

And if weight loss is the goal, theres a bevy of vacation opportunities, Donovan said. TheRanch at Malibuoffers a seven-day exercise vacation for customers who want to lose 3 to 6 percent of their body fat. It includes four hour hikes, fitness classes and a clean menu for $7,200 per person.

And then there are theBiggest Losers resorts, which average around $2,500 per person for a week.

TRAGEDY AT SEA: CRUISE SHIP RESPONSIBLE FOR COUPLE'S DEATH, REPORT FINDS

Mostly I get more people looking for fitness and well-being rather than just to lose weight, Donovan said.

Weight Watchers has been working since 2015 to branch out from its longtime weight-loss model into a program that centers on health and wellness lifestyles.

Ive always been a fan of the cruise industry, and when we looked at Weight Watchers customers and cruise customers, theyre a very similar group, said Ryan Nathan, Weight Watchers vice president of products, licensing and e-commerce. We gravitated to the cruise to expand what were doing and find new ways to extend it.

But the Weight Watchers cruise isnt all about watching your weight.

FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK FOR MORE FOX LIFESTYLE NEWS

Weight Watchers is about living life to the fullest and enjoying life and everything in moderation, Nathan said. We say dont deprive yourself, but have a small portion and count and track what youre having for the day and the week.

Within our member base, the response was so enthusiastic. Its a great environment to practice every day in a safe way with other members, and have a sense of community.

The cabin blocs for the Weight Watchers cruise have sold out, and at a higher cost an average of $945 per person than MSC would normally charge. It's cheaper than some of the wellness spas frequented by celebrities like Hugh Jackmanbut is just a few hundred dollars over what you'd pay for standard accommodations on a Norwegian or Carnival cruise to the Caribbean for the same length of time.

The Divina will have four ports of call where passengers can hike, snorkel, dive and just get physical. A second Weight Watchers cruise is in the works for Nov. 11.

The maritime industry has been slow to opt into the burgeoning world of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), but 2017 is the year this will change as shipping embraces a smart and connected future.

In fact, some commentators believe that IIoT will be the second maritime communications revolution after the success of VSAT broadband satellite services. Amongst other benefits, IIoT can dramatically improve transport and logistics, advance safety and reduce the administrative costs of regulatory compliance.

As satellite connectivity and transfer improves still further, faster and more robust connections will be available from the ship to the shore, allowing for an ever-increasing amount of data to be used in operational and diagnostic decision making.

IoT is about bringing data from control and instrumentation back to shore, explains Michel Verbist, international business development for satellite services at Orange Business Services. Shipping owners and operators have recognized the potential of IIoT, thanks to improved satellite coverage, prevalent sensor technology and the power of cloud computing. Examples of data in the shipping sector that can be collected via IIoT include voyage, weather, maintenance, machinery and state of cargo data.

All areas of shipping can benefit

IIoT will impact all areas of shipping, from cargo carriers to cruise liners and fishing boats. We are already seeing connected devices and sensors starting to be used in innovative ways.

On the cargo front, marine solutions provider Wrtsil is working with GasLog LNG Services to ensure the reliable operations of GasLogs seven large cargo carriers. Gaslog analyzes data collected on vessels and sends it via satellite to maximize intervals between maintenance periods. It factors in ordering times for spare parts and ensures engine performance is optimized to minimize fuel consumption, thus reducing both costs and the companys carbon footprint.

In passenger shipping, Carnival Corporation has announced an IoT-based personalized digital concierge dubbed the Ocean Compass, which is available on smart devices, kiosks in home ports, stateroom TVs, interactive surfaces located throughout the cruise ship, and devices carried by all guest service hosts. Inside each guest's device are near field communication (NFC) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology. The system is powered by an invisible network of proprietary sensors and computing devices embedded throughout the vessel, allowing for streamlined embarking, access to cabin door locks, anytime-anywhere gaming and easy payment, for example.

More efficient ships

IIoT will help the shipping industry become more competitive. Saving fuel will be one of the first big applications, as approximately two-thirds of a ships operating cost is its fuel. An active system on board a vessel coupled with a fuel optimization application can collect data and send it to the shore to plot the most energy efficient route, for example.

We will soon see more 24/7 connected applications for maritime, such as engine monitoring. Future fleets will have more system automation through a mesh of smart sensors and global networks for data transfer between vessels and the shore to provide full or semi-autonomous operation.

Customized solutions

There is no single solution for maritime IIoT. Every shipping company has its own specific requirements, explains Verbist. You need a strong security layer to transfer data to central locations. This data then needs other building blocks, cloud storage, management tools and data analytics to analyze the big data there are many pieces to each puzzle and each one is different. Also, the IIoT connection is dependent on what data is required to be brought ashore and the physical challenges.

RELATED: REPORT: KOTC is building a future-proof tanker fleet

RELATED: Jet in terror plunge after Emirates turbulence drama

Consider cargo ships with refrigerated goods. Sensors embedded in containers monitor the temperature. If the temperature rises an alert needs to go off immediately to customer headquarters. The sensors need to push the data to a central location where it can be sent to shore via satellite communication. Wi-Fi, which is a proven communications tool on ships, isnt an option here because it works on line of sight and cabling is not a practical solution. Options would center on either 3G or 4G LTE onboard the vessel to send data directly to the central VSAT system to be sent to shore.

However other use cases, like machinery or gyro information on speed or position, will be collected via maritime data acquisition systems and forwarded to shore, without any requirement for base stations.

Big improvements promised

IIoT has the potential to make enormous operational improvements in the shipping industry, from reducing fuel consumption and its carbon footprint to cargo handling, preemptive maintenance remote technical diagnostics and improving safety for crew and passengers.

Connected devices and technologies will enable new applications right across the industry. This includes managing energy distribution and usage in engine rooms, monitoring equipment, tracking cargo, improving the passenger experience, enhancing navigation and making travel safer by deploying rescue teams to pinpointed locations.

Ships by their very nature generate data. This data can be connected via IIoT to the vessel, the shore and the cloud. IIoT is one of the biggest things to happen in maritime history. Vessels will no longer be an island at sea, concludes Verbist. By the end of this decade we will see the industry become more connected and truly transformed. But maritime IIoT requires many competencies to build an overall solution and shipping companies will need to choose their partners carefully.
