Liberals to release plan today to legalize marijuana – The Globe and Mail
Posted: April 14, 2017 at 12:11 am
CANADIAN NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW
The Liberal government will announce its plan for legalizing marijuana today, shortly after noon Eastern Time. It will not be smooth sailing over the next year, as the government will have to contend with an independent Senate and sort out implementation with the provinces, which will be responsible for how the product is sold. Doctors are warning the recreational drug isnt totally safe, of course, even when its legal. It remains to be seen, too, what effect legalization will have on organized crime.
The Liberals continue to appoint judges at a slow pace, leaving a near-record list of vacancies.
The enabling legislation for the Canada Infrastructure Bank, which was tabled this week, is raising some concerns about just how independent the bank will be from its political masters. The really big question that I dont really see [answered] in the legislation is striking the appropriate balance between the democratic oversight of the infrastructure banks spending decisions with the independence necessary to make sure that this bank is going to be critically evaluating project business cases, said Benjamin Dachis of the C.D. Howe Institute.
The Liberals are also warning the Trump administration that Buy America provisions in the building of new oil-and-gas pipelines would violate international law.
The military is going to redo how it helps soldiers transition to civilian life.
And The Globe will argue in court today to release more information from the RCMP search warrant for Vice-Admiral Mark Norman.
B.C. ELECTION BRIEFING
By James Keller (@ByJamesKeller)
Today, the New Democrats will release their full platform with details about how the party plans to pay for some of its more expensive promises including $10 per day daycare, cancelling tolls on two major bridges in the Vancouver region, freezing electricity rates, and the rent subsidy. The NDP has previously said it will raise some of that money through tax increases on the wealthy, but the Liberals argue that wont be nearly enough to cover all the New Democrats are offering. The Liberals, who released their platform in full on Monday, have not publicly disclosed Ms. Clarks itinerary for today.
Kinder Morgans proposed expansion of its Trans Mountain pipeline between Alberta and the B.C. coast was seen as a deciding factor in the 2013 B.C. election, when then-NDP leader Adrian Dix made a surprise mid-campaign announcement opposing the project. The position fed into a narrative that the New Democrats were against resource development and resource jobs and provided a clear contrast with the B.C. Liberals, who won re-election. Four years later, B.C. and Ottawa have both approved the project, though Liberal Leader Christy Clark appeared eager to sidestep the issue yesterday. Campaigning in Burnaby, where the pipeline route ends, Ms. Clark insisted the pipeline approval was a federal decision that didnt have much to do with her government. The NDP and the Greens both oppose the Trans Mountain expansion, which could turn into a liability for the Liberals in tight races in Burnaby.
Housing is already emerging as a central theme in the campaign, as the governing Liberals and the NDP offer policies designed to address a growing housing crisis that has priced many out of the market to buy a home, while squeezing renters with high rates and low vacancies. The NDP is promising to help renters with a $400-per-year subsidy to offset housing costs. The party isnt saying how much the program would cost, but with 524,000 renters recorded in the 2011 census (the most recent year available), the bill could exceed $200-million per year. The Liberals say the focus should be on helping low-income renters and building affordable housing, and criticized the plan for applying to all renters even if theyre living in a luxury condo in downtown Vancouver.

QUOTABLE
From Wednesdays Question Period:
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: I know there are going to be Canadians all across the country getting onto their mobile phones, accessing their Internet, turning on their TVs, to watch the Stanley Cup playoffs, which start tonight, and I know that everyone across this country will join me in rooting for the Montreal Canadiens over the Maple Leafs, over the New York Rangers --
Some hon. members: Oh, oh!
House of Commons Speaker Geoff Regan: Now we are getting into dangerous territory.
Some hon. members: Oh, oh!
The Speaker: Order. That is the kind of thing that creates disorder in the House. I know the Prime Minister should realize that.
(Note: no Canadian team did well on opening night of the NHL playoffs, unfortunately.)

WHAT EVERYONES TALKING ABOUT
Campbell Clark (The Globe and Mail): When the Liberal government moves Thursday to table legislation to legalize cannabis, its going to talk about controlling and regulating and restricting sending a signal marijuana is bad, making sure its sold without a lot of branding hoopla to limit the dark arts of temptation, and especially emphasizing measures to stop pot from falling into the hands of minors.
John Ibbitson (The Globe and Mail): Gerald Butts, Prime Minister Justin Trudeaus principal secretary, and Katie Telford, his chief of staff, were young staffers at Queens Park in the Harris years. Mr. Butts eventually became Liberal Premier Dalton McGuintys principal secretary. Mr. McGuintys governments liked cramming all sorts of things into the annual budget-implementation bill. Mr. Butts watched Stephen Harpers majority government routinely employ omnibus bills and closure. Now, its the Liberals turn.
Andrew MacDougall (The Globe and Mail): The Liberals are now learning, just as Stephen Harpers majority government did, that a determined opposition can gum up Parliament. The oppositions moves, while within the rules, are undoubtedly frustrating for a government that wants to hit the barbecue circuit with a list of results longer than the current haiku. The temptation to strong-arm Parliament thus increases with every legislative obstacle.
Yves Boisvert (The Globe and Mail): When there are many nations in a single country, the task of constructing one national history is doomed. In any country, in fact, there are many histories. But at least you can try to be honest. Some attempts by groups of Canadian scholars have granted good results in the past. But the CBCs Story of Us did not even try.
Andrew Coyne (National Post): In the spirit of the times, let me add my own grievance to the gathering national pile. If by some oversight Confederation should somehow be discussed in its 150th anniversary year, it is a safe bet one figure in particular will be mentioned only in passing, if at all: George Brown. Father of Confederation, leader and principal architect of what was to become the Liberal party, founder of The Globe (later the Globe and Mail) newspaper, Brown is the forgotten man of Canadian history.

Liberal comedian Chelsea Handler sends Georgia voters to the … – TheBlaze.com
Posted: at 12:11 am
Liberal comedian Chelsea Handler has really put herself out there to support Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff, but shes apparently not even sure when his election is.
Handler has donated a few thousand dollarsto Ossoff, who is running in a special election to represent Georgias 6thCongressional District, replacing Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price in the House of Representatives.
But the comedian got a little bit ahead of herself earlier this week, asking her nearly 7million Twitter followers to head to the polls Tuesday when the election isnt taking place until next week, on April 18.
As it turns out, Handler, who in 2016 told NBCs Matt Lauerthat she associates racism with really like dumb people from the South, isnt the only Hollywood name backing Ossoffs campaign. In fact, 95 percent of the donations to the Democrats campaign have come from sources outside Georgia.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, more than $500,000 has come from California, $400,000 has come from New York, and Massachusetts donors have pitched in around $160,000.
Ossoff has received support from big names such asGeorge Takei, Sam Waterston, Debra Messing, Rosie ODonnell, and Kristen Bell. Actors Alyssa Milano and Christopher Gorham, who were in Georgia for a film project, even offered to drive early voters to the polls tocast their ballotsfor Ossoff in late March.
Republicans have criticized Ossoff for not really being connected to the district hes running to represent, pointing out that he doesnt even live in the area and that much of his financial support is coming from out of the state.
In response, Ossoff said he would move to the district, should he win.

Tony Clement, Ralph Goodale Have Feisty Exchange Ahead Of Liberal Pot Bill – Huffington Post Canada
Posted: at 12:11 am
A pair of veteran members of Parliament had a spirited exchange Thursday over the integrity of the former Liberal justice minister who advised the government on marijuana legalization.
Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale even invited his Conservative critic Tony Clement to repeat his accusations outside the House of Commons, where parliamentary privilege shields him from lawsuits.

Clement rose in question period shortly before the Liberals unveiled their long-awaited bill to legalize cannabis and highlighted a report from The Globe and Mail detailing McLellans links to the marijuana industry.
The Globe wrote that McLellan, who chaired the task force that helped mold the governments approach to pot, is a senior adviser for law firm Bennett Jones LLP, "the go-to advisory firm in the marijuana sector." The report noted a dozen lawyers at the firm have stakes in a company expected to profit from legalization.
"Anne McLellan's firm promotes itself as the go-to advisers to the industry, and at least 12 of its employees stand to make millions from their ownership stake in one of the pot companies," Clement said. "She, herself, is criss-crossing the country, promoting the Liberal policy, and handing out her own business cards.
"How deep in the grass does all this Liberal cronyism go?"
Goodale: 'Good luck'
Goodale was succinct in his defence of his former colleague, with whom he served in previous Liberal cabinets.
If the honourable gentleman wants to attack the integrity of Anne McLellan, good luck, Goodale shot back, sparking laughter and applause from the Liberal benches.
The remark evidently lit a fire under Clement, who said he would do just that when McLellan and her law firm stand to capitalize on Liberal connections.
While she was designing the framework for this new system, her legal colleagues were waiting in the wings to make big pot profits. Is this new legislation merely a smokescreen for Liberal cronies to fill their pockets? Clement bellowed before tossing his question card.

Goodale said the clear answer is no. He then invited Clement to step outside.
If the honourable gentleman would like to make those suggestions outside the House, I am sure Ms. McLellan will meet him in court, Goodale said.
The Liberal governments pot legislation will, if passed, allow adults over the age of 18 to buy and grow small amounts of marijuana for personal use. Selling the drug to a minor, however, could result in as much as 14 years behind bars.

A B.C. Liberal volunteer helped steady an upset NDP supporter who nearly fainted during some tense moments in Coquitlam Thursday.
The incident developed just after an NDP-sponsored event when NDP supporter and retired teacher Bill Wilson confronted Liberal Party volunteer Andrew Roberts, who was handing out pro-Liberal Party leaflets outside the event.
Postmedia photographer Jason Payne said the incident happenedwhile he was loading his car after taking photos at the main NDP rally.
(Roberts) started handing out Liberal Party flyers (and) Wilson started laying into the guy about Liberals being bad for teachers. Nothing much happened, but when I turned away (Wilson) almost fainted.
Payne said that Roberts and NDP press secretary James Smith managed to grab Wilson and steady him.
He (Wilson) had overexerted himself. They got him a chair and a glass of water. They called an ambulance, but he seemed OK.

levels of financial independence – Radical Personal Finance
Posted: at 12:10 am
You cant go from broke to rich in a single step. Theres no magic fairy who will suddenly transform your financial life for you. You have to do it yourself.
But you can work your way through a path that leads to financial independence and complete abundance. That path has stages and you should celebrate your progress at every stage!
We all begin from a place of dependence on others. You may be a young adult transitioning from under your parents care to being self-supporting. Or you may have hit a rough patch in life as an adult and needed the help and aid of others.
Regardless where youre starting from, the first step is to transition from being dependent on others to being self-supporting and financially solvent.
The first stage of financial independence is to become financially solvent. This means that you are able to support yourself on your own income without the aid of others and that you are current on all of your bills.
There are many strategies that you can employ depending on your starting point. You may need to create an income for the very first time in your life. You may need to transition from an unreliable or low income to a bigger and better income. Or you may need some ideas to renegotiate your debts with your creditors.
It doesnt matter why youre behind. It only matters that you get your income to a point where its equal to or greater than your expenses.
Once youre current on your bills, you need to build a buffer account. Call it what you willemergency fund, rainy day fund, cash reserves, buffer accountthe purpose is the same.
Unexpected problems happen. Unexpected opportunities present themselves. Youll need money. If you dont have any money saved, youll fall behind on your bills and wind up in debt. Or you wont be able to take advantage of a perfect opportunity because you didnt have the cash.
First you figure out how much you need in the buffer account. Then you save it. Then you declare yourself financially stable.
If you have debt, youll probably want to get rid of it. Not all debt is created equal. But youll need to sit down and look at your debts and make a plan to dump the debt thats not getting you closer to financial independence.
That definitely means getting rid of any high-interest rate debt. It certainly means clearing your name from any old, unpaid debts. It probably means dumping any consumer debt tied to depreciating assets. And it likely means having a plan to clear the debt on any productive business or investment assets.
Being debt free means you can enjoy greater freedom and independence in your life. And thats the whole point, isnt it?
Your long-term goal is to de-couple the expenses associated with your lifestyle from your need to work to pay for them. That happens when the income from your investments is sufficient to pay for them.
This happens in stagessmall at first and larger later. The first stage is to have your basic living expenses covered by your investment income.
That means your housing expenses, utilities, food, transportation, and insurance. When these basic needs of life are covered by your investment income youve attained a high degree of financial security.
When your current lifestyle expenses can be met with your investment income, youve reached the point of financial independence! Congratulations!
You can choose to disconnect yourself from work if you want to. But of course you might choose not to.
The key at this stage is simply to know that its up to you!
Its possible that you have some lifestyle goals which are beyond the lifestyle youre currently living.
This might be things you desire to buy, experiences you desire to have, or philanthropic goals you wish to meet.
If so, the important thing is to clarify these goals and fund them with your investment income. At that point in time, youre truly financially free in every sense of the word.
When you reach this stage of your financial journey, youve reached the most challenging stage of all. But it can be a very enjoyable challenge!
Youve accumulated wealth beyond the amount needed to fund your own lifestyle expenses with a comfortable margin of safety.
Now you have to decide how to responsibly manage the surplus. How will you allocate it productively while you control it? And who will control it when youre done with it? How will you assure that the money is used for good and not for evil?
Its a real challenge, but its one faced by all those who have faithfully and steadily built wealth throughout their lifetimes. Its the most important stage of all.

Full quote: When we win on Nov 8 and elect a Republican Congress, we will immediately repeal and replace Obamacare. Made during many, many speeches, a tremendous number of huge speeches, the very best speeches, by U.S. president-elect Donald Trump.
You cant always believe what candidates running for office say as they slog through their campaigns gross exaggeration, pandering, and outright lies are to be expected by all involved but when it comes to Obamacare, surely it is safe to believe that some real changes are in store for us.
Why? Well, its because the Republican party has been actively trying to cripple and repeal this legislation since it passed back in 2010. These attempts have been a) without a Senate majority and b) while Obama was still in office.
So its logical to assume that there will be some action taken here now that those blocking problemshave, from their perspective, been corrected.
And to be perfectly honest, Im a little concerned about it. Not scared or panicked not at all. But its a situation that warrants interest, attention, and the ability to alter plans and be flexible.
This post will explore what might happen, and how we could bestapproach potential changes.

3 Things the Financial Independence Equation Teaches Us – Huffington Post
Posted: at 12:10 am
Everyone has a particular financial independence datea future date when they can stop working and live off of their savings alone. I know what youre thinking: Not me, Ill be working forever. But thats not necessarily true. It turns out that you can calculate your financial independence date. And, surprisingly, the formula involved contains three hidden insights that can drastically shorten the time itll take you to achieve financial independence. Let me explain.
At its core, financial independence is about accumulating enough savingsa nest eggto pay your yearly expenses. But how large of a nest egg do you need? And how long will it take you to build that up? To answer that we need some assumptions. Here are a few that simplify matters:
You spend the same amount of money each year: E dollars. (Importantly, E should include all yearly expenses, like taxes, utilities, etc.)
You save the same amount of money each year: S dollars
You deposit your savings into an account that earns r% interest each year
You currently have no savings
You have no other assets you can sellno home, no caror future sources of income (no retirement account, no Social Security, etc.)
With these assumptions we can calculate how many years itll take you to achieve financial independence (in a minute Ill indicate where you can find the derivation of this equation):
Here log is the base ten logarithm. You probably havent thought about that since high school. Thats okay, because at the end of this article Ill give you a link to an interactive calculator I created which calculates t for you. The formulas real insights come from understanding the new kid on the block: STE.
STE is the savings to expenses ratio: STE = S/E. As an example, if you save $1,000 each year and spend $10,000 each year, then STE = $1,000/$10,000 = 1/10 = 0.1. (This says that each year you save one-tenth what you spend.)
Now on to the formulas insights. The table below shows various combinations of STE and r (the return rate on the accumulated savings).
Here are the three key insights:
Youll likely be working forever if you spend 10 times (or more) what you save each year. In these cases STE is at most 0.10, and according to the first row of the table, even with a 6% return it would still take 48 years of saving to replace your yearly expenses.
Even small improvements in your STE ratio can make a big difference. Check out what happens when you go from an STE of 0.10 to 0.25the financial independence date decreases regardless of the return, and it also occurs at least 15 years sooner!
Once you save at least what you spend each year (STE of 1 or larger), the rate of return doesnt matter much. These cases are illustrated by the last 5 rows of the table. Notice how the years until financial independence dont change much as the return rate increases. Even at an STE of 1, the difference is 4 years between a measly return of 2% and a 6% return.
The major takeaway from these insights is this: the fastest way to reach financial independence is to increase your STE ratio! Moreover, if you manage to reach an STE ratio of 1, mathematics rewards you: you can invest your savings in relatively safe but low-returning securities (like bank CDs) and still reach financial independence in about the same time as investing in higher-returning, generally more risky securities (like stocks). Finally, here is the link to the interactive tool I had mentioned I created to help you calculate your own financial independence date.
I hope the equation aboveand its insightshas empowered you to take control of your finances and move up your own financial independence date. Youll have to increase your STE ratio, which is no easy task, but there again math has much to say. In fact, the same math I used to derive the financial independence equation yields similarly useful insights into other parts of your life, including health and even relationships (see The Calculus of Happiness, which also includes the derivation of the financial independence equation). The final takeaway, then, is this: math is empowering. Learn it, implement it, and it can change your life for the better.

Superman Has Another New Origin Story, And It May Mean Major Changes For The DC Universe – Kotaku Australia
Posted: at 12:08 am
The end of the Superman Reborn event has given us a major new evolution in Superman's saga a Man of Steel who is a singular mix of his pre- and post-New 52 versions of himself. It seems like the umpteenth time in recent memory that Kal-El has had his origin tweaked, but this time it's a turn of events that could have some wide-reaching implications on DC's current continuity.
Image: DC Comics. Action Comics #977 art by Gary Frank and Brad Anderson.
Today's Action Comics #977 by Dan Jurgens, Ian Churchill, Hi-Fi and Rob Leigh has kicked off a two-part epilogue to the mind-and-reality-bending events of Superman Reborn. We get to see just what's changed in Superman's classic origins as Clark, still hazy about what went down with Mxyzptlk's machinations, returns to the Fortress of Solitude to re-learn his past.
In a lot of ways, it remains a very familiar story. Krypton is still gone, the Kents still find Kal, and in the present day, Clark is still a Daily Planet reporter, married to Lois Lane and father to Jon. But all the little details that have been tweaked seem to imply one thing only: While this Superman is an explicit merging of his Post-Crisis on Infinite Earths self and his New 52 self, it's really the Post-Crisis incarnation that's coming out on top, re-establishing itself over the New 52.
First, we get to go back and see Krypton before its destruction a Krypton that, unlike the New 52 Superman's origins, is depicted as a much more eclectic utopia. The New 52's Krypton borrowed a lot of elements from John Byrne's post-Crisis depiction of Superman's homeworld, inhabited by an emotionally reserved people driven solely by their desire for scientific advancement. Before Flashpoint ever happened, much of that depiction was erased in Superman: Birthright in 2003, a Mark Waid/Leinil Francis Yu miniseries that brought back the idea of Krypton as a paradise on the brink of disaster, but the New 52 went back to Byrne's vision... something that's now been erased once more with a more Silver Age-inspired view of Kryptonian society.
Additionally, when Kal-El arrives on Earth as a baby, the Martha and Jonathan Kent that find him appear to be in a much brighter place than their New 52 counterparts. In the New 52, Martha had recently been through a miscarriage before finding Kal-El, informing her decision to take the alien child in as her own, but the Kents we see here simply just never had a child before deciding to raise Kal. A picture of an older Jonathan with his baby grandson glimpsed in Clark's cubicle at the Planet early in the issue also seems to hint that the tragic fate he and Martha suffered in the New 52 (a car accident that ultimately claimed both their lives) hasn't occurred any more.
Beyond that, Clark had a pretty typical teenage life as he does in most versions of his origin story (although in another diversion from the New 52, it appears Clark's powers didn't manifest until he was in his teens in the New 52, he has displays of his power at a much earlier age). He grows up with Lana Lang and Pete Ross as his best friends, and with Lex Luthor as his teenage rival.
Even when we fast-forward to the present, a lot of what used to be canon before the New 52 is suddenly back again. Lois and Clark work together and are married, Daily Planet editor Perry White is Jon's godfather. If anything, the only real acquiescence to the New 52 version of events included here is an offhand mention that Lois and Clark still live outside of Metropolis presumably at the farm that the pre-Flashpoint Lois and Clark hid out on when they first came to the New 52 universe in the Superman: Lois and Clark miniseries, to avoid being caught by the then-alive New 52 Superman. Otherwise, the intention seems to be clear: While this is a merging of these two takes on the Man of Steel, it's much of the original pre-Flashpoint reality that's won out as "canon" rather than the New 52.
As Action Comics #977 only brings us up to Clark's arrival in Metropolis, there's still a bit more of his early days as the Man of Steel we don't know about yet. We've yet to see the full ramifications of the two Supermen merging on the wider DC Universe, either.
The seeming implication of all this is that the birth of the New 52 reboot back in 2011 didn't erase the past of DC comics and replace it entirely with a new universe. It instead seemingly split these characters into two alternate existences: The existences fans had been reading for decades, and the shiny new one of the New 52. We've had other inklings of this, such as the return of Eobard Thawne as a Zoom who remembers his death in Flashpointin the pages of The Flash #19.
Superman's own merging of his pre-and-post Flashpoint selves, and affecting his timeline, appears to have started some kind of chain reaction that is helping to merge these two "splits" into a whole again a process which seems to favour restoring DC's pre-New 52 continuity. So far it's mainly on a character level, like with Clark, Zoom and the re-emergence of the old Wally West. Could the actions of Superman lead to this "merging" for other major characters like Batman and Wonder Woman? At what point do we actually start seeing this on a universe-wide scale?
All this tweaking and merging is building up to something big something that, presumably, will culminate in the reveal of Watchmen's Dr Manhattan and the reasons behind his meddling with the reality of the DC universe as unveiled back in Rebirth. Even if we don't know why just yet, at least we know that Superman's has his history put back in place for now.

The Problem With the Myth of College Utopia – Daily Nexus

While observing large groups of incoming freshmen gleefully exploring UCSB this past weekend, my mind was brought back to my own first visit to campus. It was a sunny April afternoon during my senior year of high school, and I was beyond excited to tour the campus I had heard so much about. My tour guide whisked us around the school with effervescent descriptions of dorm life, activities, delicious dining commons food and concerts. In fact, the moment I decided I could actually picture myself attending the school was when he showed us Storke Plaza and advertised that Childish Gambino and Drake had both performed there.
My short visit to the campus I would later call home seemed to confirm all of the fantastic expectations I built in my head about college life. Like most young people with their sights set on a higher education, I fell head-first into the popular myth of the College Utopia.
During their last few years of high school, college-bound teenagers are bombarded by the same enthusiastic fervor every time they discuss their future plans with a curious adult. Every reader who has or is currently attending a university knows what Im talking about; middle-aged family friends are all seemingly united in the consensus that their years spent in college were the best ones of their life. They all seem to remember nothing but the best of times. Movies like Animal House sensationalize the college experience even further.
In addition to hearing these enthusiastic narratives, incoming freshmen can scroll through their own Instagram feeds to view perfectly edited snapshots of older friends at parties, Greek life events, concerts and a plethora of other exciting possibilities college can offer. These rave reviews and glossy social media posts are the stories new students draw upon when they form their expectations of what college will be like.
The stories that dont get told, however, are the day-to-day realities of college life that arent worth sharing at a dinner party or uploading to Instagram. No one wants to tell an excited teenager there will be nights when they are sitting in the library with drooping eyelids and thoughts addled from exhaustion, on the brink of tears but unable to give up just yet because their term paper is due the next day. Adults are quick to tell the tale of the wildest house party they ever attended, but they wont tell you about the nights they spent in their room crying and wishing they could be back home.
Once they actually get to college and establish a routine, freshmen students may be shocked by the volume of mundane or frustrating experiences that come along with all the exciting adventures they envisioned. This can cause them to feel isolated, wondering why they have been unable to carve a place for themselves in the utopia college is meant to be.
Adults are quick to tell the tale of the wildest house party they ever attended, but they wont tell you about the nights they spent in their room crying and wishing they could be back home.
As Im sure many of you have already discovered, college is not a utopia. Its a place and a set of experiences that exist in the real world, not the fantasy world adults and media have constructed. Being on a college campus does not immunize anyone from the stress, sadness, frustration or loneliness that are all facets of the human experience at some time or another. It is inevitable that hardships will come your way no matter what phase of life you are currently experiencing.
It can be an exciting time to challenge yourself and experience new things, but sometimes college is simply not all its cracked up to be. And thats okay.
The problem with the idealized portrait of college life in America is that it causes students whose college experiences dont exactly mirror what theyve seen in movies to believe the fault must lie within themselves. If they are not having the time of their lives and making new friends every day, they must be doing something wrong that needs to be fixed. Furthermore, they might be afraid to voice these concerns to their peers for fear they are the only one going through this dilemma.
If my words so far have resonated with you, rest assured that you are not the only person who feels this way. In fact, I believe it is more common to experience a difficult transition into college life than a seamless one. It is equally common to feel frustrated or sad just as often as you feel satisfied or carefree. These troubles are not limited to new students, either; mounting responsibilities and academic pressure can lead to increased stress for students as they advance through their college career.
Hardships are not an anomaly, but the norm. They are equally as common as the parties and fun events that appear to comprise the full sum of everyone elses college experience.
Attending college and experiencing those wild, fun-filled four years has seemingly become an essential facet of the American experience (for those who can afford it, at least). In my opinion, college is the most overly glamorized period of life in our society today. Im not saying college isnt fun; in fact, I would probably agree with the statement that the years Ive spent here have been a few of the best in my life. I am extremely privileged and grateful to be able to attend this university and experience all the benefits it has to offer.
In my opinion, college is the most overly glamorized period of life in our society today.
The fact remains, however, that the experience I was told to expect from my college years set me up for disappointment when I discovered all of the unsung responsibilities that college entails. Wouldnt it be better to let high school students see a realistic portrayal of college life that doesnt deceive them into thinking they are headed into a state of drunken, carefree bliss for the next four years? I know we want teenagers to be excited about all the good things ahead of them, but the inflation of these benefits and erasure of any hardships end up harming them in the long run.
When my younger friends ask me about my college experience, I am always quick to describe the I.V. party scene, studying on the beach, the activities Ive joined and the friends Ive made. But I also make sure to tell them about the nights I spent alone in my freshman dorm room scrolling through Instagram, aching from the dual pains of FOMO and homesickness. I tell them about how many times Ive gotten sick after finals week because my body couldnt handle the stress and lack of sleep. I tell them the good most definitely outweighs the bad, but hard times are inevitably going to come their way.
I dont think this approach is negative or discouraging; in fact, letting them know that hard times are normal will be comforting later on down the line. I wish someone had done me the favor of informing me that college is not like the movies and that there is nothing wrong with that.
