Why parents fear technology is making kids fat, dumb and mean – CNN

Posted: April 13, 2017 at 11:41 pm

And the messages about media and tech start almost from the moment they're born: TV will rot your kid's brain! Video games are evil! Kids don't know how to have conversations anymore!

It all boils down to the idea that too much media and tech will ruin your kid -- or make them fat, dumb, and mean.

But obviously that's an oversimplification. The truth is more complicated -- and a lot less scary.

Here we break down the scariest media and tech rumors and give you some solid research and simple, no-stress advice.

Advice: Turn off the TV unless you're actively watching it. And keep it out of sleeping areas. Play music -- perhaps wordless -- if you want some background noise. And set aside time each day, if possible, to actively play with little kids.

Advice: Avoid commercials by using a DVR or choosing videos without ads. Also, teach kids to recognize advertisers' tricks and marketing techniques, so when they see ads, they can evaluate them critically. Make sure kids get exercise every day, either at school or home. If kids can't spend time outdoors, find ways to be physically active indoors (create obstacle courses; do kid "boot camps") and choose active video games or find fun exercise apps or TV shows to enjoy together or for kids to enjoy on their own.

Advice: Kids don't talk on their phones very much -- they're more likely to text or use apps -- so even if there were a credible connection between the radio waves emitted from phones and damage to the brain, most kids would be at little risk. If you want to be extra cautious, make sure they aren't sleeping with their phones under their pillows (not a good idea anyway!).

Research says: While plenty of research has been done to try to figure this out, the results are still pretty inconclusive, especially for kids. Certainly, studies show that kids feel addicted, but whether many are experiencing the symptoms of true addiction -- interference with daily life, needing more to achieve the same feeling -- is still up for debate. Also, no one has defined what "too much" time is.

Advice: Build as much balance into kids' days and weeks as possible. That means aiming for a mix of screen and non-screen time that includes time with family and friends, reading, exercising, chores, outdoor play, and creative time. If kids seem to be suffering in some area -- at school, with friends, with behavior at home -- take a look at her daily and weekly activities and adjust accordingly.

Research says: Heavy exposure to violent media can be a risk factor for violent behavior, according to some -- but not all -- studies. Children who are exposed to multiple risk factors -- including substance abuse, aggression, and conflict at home -- and who consume violent media are more likely to behave aggressively.

Advice: Avoid games that are age-inappropriate, especially ones that combine violence with sex. Make media choices that reflect your family's values; that can mean choosing nonviolent games, limiting the amount of time kids can play certain games, or playing along with kids to help guide them through iffy stuff. Also, as much as possible, limit other risk factors of aggression in kids' lives.

Advice: Make sure kids get experience having face-to-face conversations with family members, friends, and others, such as teachers, coaches, or clergy. Teach kids proper etiquette, including not staring at a phone while someone else is talking. Model the behavior you want to see. But also accept that digital communication is here to stay. Embrace it and use it with your kid. And don't criticize kids for using it appropriately, even if it's not your preferred method of communication.

Amazon sharing Echo’s microphone technology with manufacturers – The Seattle Times

Posted: at 11:41 pm

Amazon.com is opening up the microphone technology used by its Echo home speaker to other hardware makers for free, a move that seeks to spread the reach of the companys artificial-intelligence assistant, Alexa.

Seattle Times business reporter

Amazon.com is opening up the microphone technology used by its Echo home speaker to other hardware makers for free, a move that seeks to spread the reach of the companys artificial-intelligence assistant, Alexa.

Owners of Echo devices interact with the Alexa cloud-based software by speaking commands and questions. Hence the importance of the seven-microphone, circular array that Amazon puts in its Echo device.

The mikes, and the software that controls them, are designed to hear instructions from afar and cut through domestic hubbub ranging from juice blenders to screaming children.

Amazon will share this technology with other device makers via an invitation-only program.

Amazons promotion of its Echo and Alexa technology comes amid stiffening competition in the voice-activated artificial-intelligence world from the likes of Microsoft, Apple and Google.

Giving other manufacturers a free ride on its technology might undercut the sale of Amazons own Echo devices. But its a long game. Amazon might consider that its a risk worth taking to make Alexa the dominant voice interface, giving Amazon increased presence in every household.

Analysts with RBC have estimated that Alexa could become a $10 billion business by the end of this decade. About half of that estimated revenue could come from the sale of Alexa-enabled devices, but also from consumers ordering products from Amazons site by talking to Alexa.

Steve King says Trump’s voters are ‘uneasy’ over administration’s lack of progress – DesMoinesRegister.com

The voters who propelled Donald Trump into the White House are starting to get uneasy over slow progress onkey elements of the presidents agenda, U.S. Rep. Steve King said Thursday.

King, a Republican from Iowas 4th District, said Trumps mandate for enacting change is slightly wounded by the botched rollout of a health care reform package and particularly by his inaction thus far on limiting immigration.

King, an immigration hardliner who represents a district that voted heavily for Trump, made the comments Thursday during a taping of Iowa Press, Iowa Public Televisions weekly public affairs show. The full interview will air statewide at 7 p.m. on Friday and again at noon on Sunday.

Regarding immigration enforcement, King called on the president to rescind Obama administration executive orders allowing some undocumented workers to remain in the country and said the administration must make progress on constructing a wall along the southern border.

His base is starting to get uneasy because they havent seen movement yet on DACA and DAPA, and theyre not confident yet on the wall, he said.

When asked about others areas in which the president has markedly shifted his rhetoric since the campaign including on confronting the Syrian regime, the value of NATO alliances, Chinas status as a currency manipulator and on health care reform King acknowledged that Trump may be risking his standing with the voters who elected him.

The list of campaign promises that Donald Trump promised he was going to take care of, he marched through those pretty good in the first three or more weeks, he said in a follow-up interview. Now it seems to have bogged down.

King, an eight-term Congressman representing Iowas most conservative district, declined to answer a question on whether he would seek re-election in 2018, but said he enjoys the job and has gotten better at it every year.

When asked about his accomplishments over 15 years in office, King said his role has been to oppose his political opponents agenda rather than advance one of his own.

His top three successes, he said, were opposing a cap-and-trade regulatory system for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, working against a comprehensive immigration reform package that passed the Senate but failed in the House in 2013 and agitating for years on the repeal of the health care law known as Obamacare.

The most important thing anyone can be doing, especially when theres a bad agenda coming at you, is to kill bad ideas, he said.

King was also asked about the perception that he is a racist. The accusation has been leveled against him numerous times following inflammatory comments hes made over the years regarding race, immigration and culture including last month after a tweet that drew rebukes from the White House and the Republican Party of Iowa.

King said there is no evidence that supports that assertion that he is racist.

Ive never responded to that charge because theres never been a basis for it, King said. The most dog-eared, worn-out card in the entire lexicon deck is the race card. There are some people who only have one card in their deck, and theyre 51 cards short.

IAAF: Russia making ‘little progress’ in cleaning up doping culture – ESPN

Posted: at 11:40 pm

LONDON -- The IAAF says Russia is making "little progress" cleaning up its doping culture to secure its reinstatement into international athletics.

In a report on Thursday, track and field's world governing body criticized Russia's decision to make pole vault great Yelena Isinbayeva the head of the country's scandalized anti-doping agency.

IAAF Russia task force chairman Rune Andersen said of Isinbayeva being named RUSADA chairwoman that "it is difficult to see how this helps to achieve the desired change in culture in Russia track and field, or how it helps to promote an open environment for Russian whitsleblowers."

Isinbayeva repeatedly criticized the World Anti-Doping Agency, framed doping investigations as an anti-Russian plot and called for a leading whistleblower to be banned for life.

Isinbayeva missed the Rio de Janeiro Olympics because of a ban on Russia's athletics team.

Still new to the game, Oluwole Betiku making progress at USC – ESPN (blog)

Posted: at 11:40 pm

LOS ANGELES -- Oluwole Betiku readily admits that when he arrived on campus at USC a little over a year ago, he didnt care much for the X's-and-O's aspect of football. The thought of spending extra time in the film room just didnt appeal to him.

I didnt really embrace it, he said. I didnt really like it.

That can be a problematic approach for any high school player making the jump to big-time college football, but it was even more so for Betiku, who immigrated to the United States from Nigeria in 2013 and had played only two years of organized football. He quickly became one of the nations prized recruits at nearby Serra High School, but his immediate success had everything to do with raw, natural ability.

At 6-foot-3 and approaching 250 pounds, Betiku was blessed with size and speed that few high school offensive linemen are equipped to deal with and was primarily tasked with rushing the passer. Its that skill -- getting to the quarterback -- that resulted in scholarship offers from all over the country, but he was so good at it that it masked some real deficiencies.

Dropping in coverage? Forget it. Recognizing formations and blocking schemes? No chance. In spring practice a year ago, he was forced to process so much new information that it became clear very quickly to the coaching staff that if he were to have a chance to play as a true freshman, it would be in a very specialized role.

You think about his background and where he came from, USC coach Clay Helton said. Some kids have been playing since they were 5 years old. He was playing catchup as far as learning the game.

USC kept Betiku out of the first five games of the season, but elected to burn his redshirt against Colorado in early October. The Trojans were 2-3 headed into the game and were in dire need of an improved pass rush. Betiku, the coaching staff figured, could carve out a niche on third downs, but it didnt pan out that way. He did not record a tackle while appearing in five of the final eight games of the season.

Linebackers coach Johnny Nansen says now that he wishes they would have redshirted Betiku or found more ways to get him playing time, but what's done is done. Plus, USC was 8-0 after removing his redshirt, so it would be nitpicking to be too critical of the defensive rotation.

Next year, though, Betiku seems destined for a significant role. Not necessarily as a starter, since he still figures to be behind Porter Gustin and Uchenna Nwosu on the depth chart at outside linebacker, but he has definitely made his case for meaningful snaps. There have been times during spring practice when he has looked like USCs best pass-rusher, and, perhaps not coincidentally, he has become a regular in the film room.

Now I love it, Betiku said of learning the finer points of the game.

In between classes, after classes, whenever he can steal time, Betiku makes his way to the football building to further his understanding of the game. Hes leans heavily on Gustin and Nwosu and is quizzed almost daily by Nansen, who calls what Betiku is still going through Football 101.

It started with formations, knowing when its 12 personnel, 11 personnel, 10 personnel, Betiku said. And now [Nansen] makes me come on the board and draw a play and draw the blocking scheme of the offense and draw a power play. Draw an over formation. Draw a counter against our under defense.

A year ago, those phrases might have seemed foreign to him, but now hes at a point where hes identifying formations to determine what kind of blocking scheme to expect, and how to react accordingly. For him, its all about not having to think so he can start playing fast.

When you look at him when he first got here to now, Nansen said, its like night and day from a technique standpoint and an overall understanding of defenses.

Hes more in tune, as far as the situations were in and what to expect on certain situations. Hes starting to study the game like hes supposed to.

USC concludes spring practice with its spring game on Saturday.

Tatum’s miracle: TCH patient stuns doctors with progress – 12newsnow.com

Posted: at 11:40 pm

Michelle Homer, KHOU 9:32 PM. CDT April 13, 2017

Tatum Schulte is a funny, sassy 9 year old who has been battling a rare form of bone cancer calledosteosarcomasince 2015. (Facebook)

HOUSTON - A Texas Panhandle family believes in miracles after hearing amazing news from their daughters doctors at Texas Childrens Hospital in Houston.

We left Houston last night with huge smiles, grateful hearts, and a story that will rock your world! Shawna Schulte posted on the Team Tatum Facebook page.

Tatum Schulte is a funny, sassy 9 year old who has been battling a rare form of bone cancer called osteosarcoma since 2015. Doctors had to amputate her leg to save her life in 2016. Months later, the family was devastated to learn the cancer had returned.

The Schulte family packed up and headed back to Houston for more chemo. In February, TCH doctors delivered more heartbreaking news.

Unfortunately, Tatum's tumor has doubled in size since we scanned in December so obviously the chemo has not worked, the family posted on Facebook.

Doctors recommended a very risky and difficult surgery as a last resort.

So hard to swallow as parents, but I told them that if it meant keeping Tatum alive and her being with us the rest of our lives then we would do it. It's Tatum..she is a warrior, she is the toughest, and if anyone can conquer this surgery, it's HER!

Surgeons performed the high-risk surgery to remove the tumor in early March.

Weeks of tough physical therapy followed as Tatum continued to prove she is a warrior.

Fast forward to Wednesday and a return visit to Texas Childrens.

Tatum couldnt wait to show her surgeon how well she was doing with a walker. He was speechless.

He proceeded to tell us that there is no way she should be walking, since he cut through 3 nerves that should have left her without feeling in most of her leg!

He then told the Schultes the surgery he performed on Tatum had never been done before because one wrong move could have cost Tatum her life. As word spread, more doctors came into the room to see Tatum walking for themselves. Some snapped photos and videos.

Oh, and thats not all.

Their next appointment was with Tatum's head oncologist. He told the Schultes the tumor had 80% necrosis or dead cancer cells.

He was stunned, speechless... you name it. He kept saying he had no explanation, Shawn Schulte posted.

Along with Tatum's Houston medical team, the family believes homeopathic doctors helped with a special diet and supplements. But they believe the real credit goes to God.

We know God can use any means he chooses for healing!!! We are fully aware that this all comes from Him and we will always give Him the glory through good and bad!

They cite a dream Tatum had back in January.

Tatum Schulte has been battled bone cancer since 2015. (Family photo)

In her dream Jesus told her she was going to go to Houston and she would not have cancer anymore and he told her she was going to be ok!

Tatum will continue therapy and plans to return to school in a few weeks.

Meantime, her family will continue to share her story of their Easter week miracle.

What perfect timing...Holy week! I am again reminded of His amazing grace, His miraculous healing ways, His comforting touch, and His perfect timing!

A gofundme.com page has been set up to help the family with medical bills.

Prayers are also welcome.

Zoning amendments, Super Wal-Mart progress discussed – Desert Dispatch

Posted: at 11:40 pm

By Paola Baker Staff Writer

BARSTOW The Planning Commission discussed new zoning amendments, the progress of the Super Wal-Mart project and the status of the Barstow Area Center for Entrepreneurs during their meeting on Monday night.

The commissioners voted to continue a public hearing on a conditional use permit issued to the Barstow Area Center for Entrepreneurs. According to city records, the continuance was requested to give staff additional time to review the conditions of the project.

Citing technical difficulties, Planning and Environmental Services Administrator Jennifer Riley requested additional time to submit the report on the project. The center, established by Barstow businessman Paul Courtney, boasts classrooms, a computer center and several office spaces for businesses, according to a previous Desert Dispatch report.

Courtney told the Daily Press hes been going through trials and tribulations brought on by traffic concerns near the center that have hindered the centers progress.

Im truly puzzled by (the citys) reaction, Courtney said. This project hasnt been embraced like I thought it would.

With a motion to continue from Commissioner Bea Lint, seconded by Commissioner Marilyn Dyer-Kruse, the vote to continue the public hearing to May 8 was passed unanimously.

The rest of Mondays agenda included the addition of a new zoning amendment to the citys municipal code and a discussion on the citys annual report on the status of the general plan and housing element, which was sent to the Barstow City Council for review. The amendment was implemented to comply with changes to state laws regarding accessory dwelling units, also known as granny flats.

A traffic and safety update was presented, with consulting city engineer Brad Merrell discussed the progress of the Super Wal-Mart project. Merrell said construction crews began work on curbs and gutters in the area this week, while paving on E. Main Street is expected to start next week.

Hopefully keeping my fingers crossed E. Main Street will be all done soon, Merrell said.

The Planning Commission will meet again on May 8. Visit http://www.barstowca.org for more details.

Adrienne Truscott Presents Solo ‘Non-Dance’, THIS at New York Live Arts – Broadway World

Posted: at 11:38 pm

Adrienne Truscott made THIS, a solo performance which may not always be a solo, created specifically for Live Arts stage. The event took place April 5-8.

THIS was a small or large or medium act of artistic survivalism and an ever-evolving work that writes, in real time, the libretto of the performance the artist is attempting to do which changes with each performance to reflect the new context brought by the performance at hand.

Check out the video below!

For more than 15 years, Adrienne Truscott-choreographer, circus acrobat, dancer, writer, and as of late, comedian-has been making genre-straddling work in New York City and abroad. In April she was one of 20 artists selected nationally as recipients for the inaugural 2014 Doris Duke Impact Artist Award. Her evening-length solo comedic work and group choreographic works have been presented variously at Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs, Darwin Festival, PS122, Joe's Pub, The Kitchen, Dublin Fringe, Danspace, and Dance Theater Workshop among others.

The Wau Wau Sisters, her neo-vaudevillian collaboration with Tanya Gagne, have been presented by such iconic venues as the Sydney Opera House (Aus), Joe's Pub and CBGB's (NYC), Victoria Arts Center (Melbourne) and The Roundhouse (London). The Wau Wausisters are fixtures at among others, the Edinburgh, Melbourne, Brighton, Adelaide, Perth and Philadelphia Fringe Festivals and are seen regularly in the international sensations La Soiree and La Clique. Their contemporaries broadly recognize the influence of their radical and ludicrous take on circus and cabaret.

Truscott has taught at Wesleyan University Dance Department as a visiting artist, and guest taught at Sarah Lawrence College's Theater and Dance Departments and Yale Universtiy.

Mission Statement

Truscott learned how to and continues to make work in terms of choreographic composition, an early application of form that seemed to allow for the most broad investigation, loose interpretation, and varied possibilities. This impulse remains strong because increasingly live performance strikes her as the most radical way to re-engage people's attention-not just socially or politically, but personally, aesthetically, energetically; the most available way to trigger the act of paying attention. She engages many genres of live performance that look, act, and intend differently. Her work is held uniquely in common by this understanding of composition, enabling it to remain clear while being complex, sophisticated while accessible, available yet mysterious, personally unique while layered in abstraction, entertaining yet rigorous and serious about being humorous. She has consistently sought out different environments/mandates for her work rather than relegating it to specific economic, social, aesthetic, or geographic contexts. She is curious about how modes of presentation (i.e., experimental, international, commercial, or illegal venues) interact with different forms (dance, cabaret, circus, comedy) and how that can upend assumptions that often accompany these forms and their target audiences, respectively.
