Freedom Caucus’ Jordan: End ObamaCare blaming, ‘Let’s get to work’ – Fox News
Posted: at 5:18 am
House Freedom Caucus co-founder Rep. Jim Jordan tried Sunday to end the blame being cast upon his group and others for Republicans failed ObamaCare overhaul bill, saying, Lets get to work.
Instead of doing the blame game, lets get to work, Jordan, R-Ohio, said on Fox News Sunday. Lets do the responsible thing. Lets get back to work and do what we told the voters we were going to do.
Much of the blame has been directed at the conservative group and its roughly 35 members, after House Speaker Paul Ryan realized that he didnt have enough support for the bill in the GOP-led chamber and canceled the final vote Friday.
However, practically everybody in official Washington is being accused of being at fault -- from the caucus for its ideological purity, to Ryan for his inability to get the votes to President Trump for failing to deliver with his vaunted deal-making skills.
Ryan purportedly needed about 20 more votes, mostly from Freedom Caucus members and a handful of GOP House moderates.
The rift led Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, to resign Sunday from the caucus.
"To deliver on the conservative agenda we have promised the American people for eight years, we must come together to find solutions to move this country forward," Poe said through his congressional office.
"Saying no is easy, leading is hard, but that is what we were elected to do. Leaving this caucus will allow me to be a more effective member of Congress and advocate for the people of Texas. It is time to lead."
Poe intended to vote in favor of the bill and personally told Trump last week that he would support the measure.
None of the chambers 193 Democrats supported dismantling President Obamas signature 2010 health care law, which is struggling under increasing costs and fewer insurance policy choices for Americans.
Jordan argued Sunday that the bill lost on its shortcomings, not over ideology, with just 17 percent of Americans approving of the measure, crafted by Ryan, R-Wis., and his leadership team.
Maybe the fact that we opposed it did the country a favor because this bill didnt repeal ObamCare, he said. This bill didnt do what we told the American people we were going to do.
He argued fiscal conservatives want a bill that brings back affordable insurance for their voters and all Americans through a market-based, not government-run, approach.
Not some one-size-fits-all mandate from Washington, said Jordan, whose caucus backed a plan by South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Republicans. Thats what our plan would have accomplished.
He also made clear that conservatives will hold Trump and Ryan to the same standards moving forward on such issues of tax reform and building the U.S.-Mexico border wall.
Lets make sure we actually secure the border, build the wall, like we told the American people we were going to, he said. Thats what the Freedom Caucus was created to do -- fight for those simple principles.
Fox News' Chad Pergram contributed to this report.

Why (almost) everyone hates the House Freedom Caucus – CNN
Posted: at 5:18 am
Its members, however, are Public Enemy No. 1 on Capitol Hill.
The group of conservative agitators who've irked leadership, held the line against spending bills and rebelled against trade priorities of leaders have now helped delay a health care vote at least one day.
Lawmakers and staffers are taking out their unhappiness on the group.
Even the White House is getting frustrated, sources say, as meetings -- -- including one Thursday morning with President Donald Trump -- have gotten them nowhere.
Rep. Bradley Byrne, an Alabama Republican and member of the Republican Study Committee, a large group of fiscal conservatives, complained Thursday morning that the Freedom Caucus continues to throw out an expanding list of demands and suggested there was little to be done to get some in that group on board and it was time to move on.
"Those members don't change so at some point you've got to say there's nothing in the world that's going to change their minds," Byrne said.
A senior GOP aide said the caucus realizes they have moderates at risk with nothing to show for it.
"They don't know how to get to yes. They just don't. And it's putting the whole process at risk right now," the aide said.
Byrne blasted the move to continue talks with the hard right in the Freedom Caucus while leaving the bulk of other members in the dark.
"The vast majority of us in the Republican conference have been left out of these discussions and we have no idea what's going on, and I think that is a problem for our leadership and I think it's growing problem for the chances of this bill," Byrne, who is supporter of the health care bill and part of the whip operation to help pass it.
Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, R-North Carolina, said Thursday there are "30-40" votes against the bill at this point. He also tried to downplay his power.
"I don't have any veto power," Meadows told reporters. "I have one vote."
So what is the Freedom Caucus, anyway?
The House Freedom Caucus got its start in 2015 when a small group of members came together to push for more conservative spending and policy ideals in the House. At first, there were just nine of them, but the group, which is considered the most far-right flank of the Republican conference, grew.
There is no official list of members, but the group is currently led by Rep. Mark Meadows, a North Carolina Republican. Other prominent members include Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, Idaho Rep. Raul Labrador, Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks, South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford and Michigan Rep. Justin Amash.
The group -- when they hold the line together -- can have a lot of influence.
In 2015, they pushed to defund Planned Parenthood in a must-pass bill to keep the government funded. The group's revolt against then-House Speaker John Boehner on a host of issues left Boehner ready to retire. During the Obama years, many of the conservative bills that made it through the House never had a shot of being signed by former President Barack Obama. Now, the group could have a lot more sway.
And while the group has insisted its relationship with House Speaker Paul Ryan is more open, the opposition by much of the group to House leaders' health care bill has created a schism once again between the group and leadership.
The group has said repeatedly that it has the votes to kill House leadership's health care bill, and members seem to have enough sway with the White House that they've continued negotiating with Trump even after House leaders indicated no more changes would likely be made.
The Freedom Caucus may get a repeal of Essential Health Benefits to be included in the House leadership's bill. That would repeal the requirement in Obamacare that insurers cover 10 benefits such as maternity care and prescription drug coverage. Including it in the bill could substantially frustrate moderates who want to be a 'yes' but worry that their constituents would be irate if they take away the benefits.
CNN's Deirdre Walsh and Phil Mattingly contributed to this report.

Fiscal conservatives balk on vote for GOP health bill in House – Cullman Times Online
Posted: at 5:18 am
WASHINGTON (AP) Prospects for the Republicans' showcase health care bill looked grimmer by the minute Thursday as President Donald Trump failed to get a deal with a bloc of balky conservatives, leaving the legislation short of votes in the House.
GOP leaders were meeting behind closed doors to determine next steps, but with moderate-leaning Republican lawmakers also bailing on the legislation, it looked increasingly unlikely the vote planned for later Thursday would happen.
The bill could still come to a vote in coming days, but canceling Thursday's vote would amount to a significant political setback for Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan in the first major legislative test of Trump's young presidency. It comes on the seven-year anniversary to the day of President Barack Obama signing the Affordable Care Act, seven years that Republicans have devoted to promising repeal.
Those promises helped them keep control of the House and Senate and win the White House, but now, at the moment of truth, they are falling short.
"No deal," House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said after he and his group of more than two dozen rebellious conservatives met with Trump to try to get more concessions to reduce requirements on insurance companies.
The Republican legislation would halt Obama's tax penalties against people who don't buy coverage and cut the federal-state Medicaid program for low earners, which the Obama statute had expanded. It would provide tax credits to help people pay medical bills, though generally skimpier than Obama's statute provides. It also would allow insurers to charge older Americans more and repeal tax boosts the law imposed on high-income people and health industry companies.
The measure would also block federal payments to Planned Parenthood for a year, another stumbling block for GOP moderates.
In a danger sign for Republicans, a Quinnipiac University poll found that people disapprove of the GOP legislation by 56 percent to 17 percent, with 26 percent undecided. Trump's handling of health care was viewed unfavorably by 6 in 10.
The survey was conducted March 16 to 21 with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
GOP leaders had targeted Thursday for the climactic vote, in part because it marks the seventh anniversary of Obama's signing the measure into law. With the House in recess awaiting the outcome of the White House meeting, C-SPAN aired video of that signing ceremony.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., couldn't resist a dig.
"You may be a great negotiator," she said of Trump. "Rookie's error for bringing this up on a day when clearly you're not ready."
In a count by The Associated Press, at least 30 Republicans said they opposed the bill, enough to defeat the measure. But the number was in constant flux amid the eleventh-hour lobbying.
Including vacancies and expected absentees, the bill would be defeated if 23 Republicans join all Democrats in voting "no."
Obama declared in a statement that "America is stronger" because of the current law and Democrats must make sure "any changes will make our health care system better, not worse for hardworking Americans." Trump tweeted to supporters, "Go with our plan! Call your Rep & let them know."
Tension has been building in advance of the critical vote, and a late-night meeting of moderate-leaning members in Speaker Ryan's office Wednesday broke up without resolution.
A key moderate who had been in the meeting, Rep. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania, issued a statement saying he would be voting "no" on the health bill. "I believe this bill, in its current form, will lead to the loss of coverage and make insurance unaffordable for too many Americans," said Dent, a leader of the Tuesday Group of moderate-leaning Republicans.
Congressional leaders have increasingly put the onus on the president to close the deal, seemingly seeking to ensure that he takes ownership of the legislation and with it, ownership of defeat if that is the outcome.
Moderates were given pause by projections of 24 million Americans losing coverage in a decade and higher out-of-pocket costs for many low-income and older people, as predicted by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

Augustine Alegeh, Former NBA President
Falana accuses senior lawyers of corruption
A former president of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Augustine Alegeh (SAN) has called for an urgent amendment of the 1999 constitution by the National Assembly to grant financial autonomy to the judiciary.
He said the present situation where the executive arm of government still controls the finances of the judiciary is a dangerous signal for the countrys democracy.
Alegeh spoke at a lecture titled Strengthening democracy in Nigeria: The role of the judiciary, at the first Founders Day lecture of the Edo University, Iyamho, Edo State yesterday.
The provisions are supposed to give judiciary financial autonomy and full control over its own funds. However, these provisions appear couched in a manner that creates issues of compliance. Financial autonomy of the judiciary is the bedrock for a dynamic and pragmatic judiciary. The Executive is advised not to engage in any action that would undermine the financial autonomy of the judiciary to work out a practical way of ensuring financial autonomy of the judiciary.
Meanwhile, a senior advocate of Nigeria and former President of the West Africa Bar Association, Mr. Femi Falana, yesterday berated the leadership of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), saying many senior lawyers have acquired reputation for corruption.
Falana, who was a discussant at the 10th Kehinde Sofola (SAN) memorial lecture in Lagos said the body has not done much to defend the rule of law. He also criticised the government for disobeying court orders.

Inside the European utopia where babies are ‘the happiest in the … – New York Post
Posted: at 5:15 am
Every year or so, a new group gets to reign supreme as the best parents in the world. For a while, the spotlight focused on the French and their ability to get kids to sit still at restaurants (Bringing Up Bb, 2012) and make them eat asparagus and butternut squash (French Kids Eat Everything, 2012). Prior to that, it was the !Kung San tribe of South Africa, where mothers nurse 50 to 100 times a day (!) and are known for being able to calm even the most colicky baby in under a minute (The Happiest Baby on the Block, 2005). Lately, the Danes have been getting some buzz, with their concept of domestic coziness (hygge pronounced hoo-ga), family time and empathy-building (The Danish Way of Parenting, 2016).
But in actual fact, the Netherlands has them all beat.
Holland might be small (about the size of two New Jerseys and with a population of 16.8 million), but it has some pretty big boasting rights: A 2013 UNICEF report rated Dutch children the happiest in the world. Dutch kids came out on top when compared with those in 29 of the worlds richest industrialized countries (the United States, by comparison, ranked a miserable 26th, just above Lithuania, Latvia and Romania.)
These findings are echoed in the new book, The Happiest Kids in the World: How Dutch Parents Help Their Kids (and Themselves) by Doing Less (The Experiment publishing), out April 4.
Dutch babies were found to be more contented laughing, smiling and cuddling more than American babies, write the books authors, Rina Mae Acosta and Michele Hutchison.
One of the Dutch national sayings translates roughly to Just act normal, thats crazy enough, as a way of reminding everyone to just relax and that includes parents. Its about accepting yourself for who you are, write the authors. Life isnt Pinterest-perfect, and no one expects you to be perfect. Its about recognizing that you dont have to try so hard.
Acosta is an American who fell in love with a Dutch man and moved to the Netherlands in 2006. She lives in the town of Driebergen with her husband and their two young sons, aged 18 months and 4 years old. Hutchison is originally from the UK and has been living in Amsterdam since 2004 with her Dutch husband and son and daughter, 10 and 12. They based their book on personal experience both women gave birth in Holland and research.
The book reveals a stark difference between the parenting styles in America and Holland and its effects on children. One study published in the European Journal of Developmental Psychology, which is cited in the book, found that Dutch babies [are] easier to soothe, while American babies [display] more fear, sadness and frustration. Their babies sleep more, too: At six months, Dutch infants slumbered an average of two hours longer than a comparison sample of American tots, a feat accomplished by putting the child to bed in his/her own crib when they are tired but still awake. The Dutch are big proponents of a regular daily routine, not too much stimulation (i.e., not more than one activity per day), few distractions and a quiet place to sleep. These tips appear in a booklet distributed to all new parents by the Dutch consultatiebureau, a government office devoted to family support and the care and well-being of babies and children under the age of 4.
Life isnt Pinterest-perfect, and no one expects you to be perfect. Its about recognizing that you dont have to try so hard.
It can be supremely annoying to read about yet another group of parents apparently crushing it while the US lags. But the good news here is that Dutch parents arent doing anything crazy, over-the-top or challenging. According to the book, the national diet is fairly bland (i.e., their 5-years-olds arent merrily eating beets and salmon mousse, like French kids). Their children arent renowned for behaving particularly well when out dining with Mom and Dad; in fact, in the rest of Europe, they have a bit of a rep for running around restaurants yelling.
Instead, the secret to their happiness success seems to lie in a combination of factors, say the authors: routine, regular family meals together and allowing for plenty of independence (Dutch kids bikes everywhere.)
Not for them the mania of one-upmanship that can be so difficult for many American and British parents to cast off. Acosta has been living in Holland for 11 years, but her inner Californian overachieving mommy mode still kicks in sometimes. She writes about throwing a third-birthday party for her son last year, complete with decor and a lavish spread (all prepared by her). My mother in law doesnt understand why Im doing so much, she writes. But I find it impossible to shake the idea that the more time, effort and thought I put into my childs birthday party, the more I prove my love for him.
In contrast, most Dutch childrens birthday parties are laid-back affairs for immediate family and a few neighbors, with cake and a few snacks. The point isnt the food, the decorations, elaborate bouncy castles or entertainers. Its celebrating togetherness (to that end, its customary to congratulate the parents and grandparents, not just the birthday boy or girl.)
The Dutch parenting style hits that elusive balance between parental involvement and benign neglect, write the authors.
The norm in the Netherlands is simplicity: Families tend to choose simple, low-cost activities and take a down-to-earth approach.
It seems the Dutch are being good parents by chilling out. They eschew the constant micromanaging or stage-directing of a simple playdate or sports practice so prevalent in the US.
And the reason for that is there is not the same national obsession with ones child being The Best, winning all the medals or being the earliest to read. In fact, the parents Acosta and Hutchison spoke to preferred a de-emphasis on early reading in favor of more time spent playing and exploring in preschool and kindergarten.
The Dutch definitely do not care if little Sophie or Sem is a piano prodigy, a chess champion or an Instagram model famous by the age of 2, they write. There are no Baby Einstein DVDs being played, no black-and-white flash cards being used ... the Dutch arent concerned about their babies being the smartest. They seem to just want them to be the easiest.
All this Dutch parenting magic starts, as so many of the best situations in life do, with cookies: About 25 percent of Dutch births take place at home, and are then celebrated with Beschuit met muisjes (round breakfast rusks, buttered and sprinkled with aniseeds coated in sugar) to celebrate the homecoming of a newborn. In addition to being delicious, the aniseed is thought to stimulate breast-milk production.
Once they start eating solids, Dutch children often enjoy hagelslag for breakfast a piece of bread with unsalted butter, loaded with chocolate sprinkles. Despite having the lowest obesity rates in the aforementioned UNICEF report only 8.36 percent of children aged 11, 13 and 15 were characterized as obese the chocolate sprinkles are a cherished part of Dutch childhood. What a joy to discover that the eternal secret to happy kids just might stem from routine, family time, independence, reasonable expectations and chocolate sprinkles.

Things to know about Oceania Cruises: Oceania Sirena and … – The Border Mail
Posted: at 5:14 am
2 Oct 2016, 12:15 a.m.
The newest addition to the six-strong fleet, Oceania Sirena, is sailing a 34-day round-trip from Sydney in March and it's already wait-list only.
Oceania Cruises is part of the NCLH family Norwegian Cruise Lines and Regent Seven Seas Cruises are sister lines and although its ships have been visiting our shores for some years, they haven't exactly grabbed the headlines.
However, those in the know are keen fans. The newest addition to the six-strong fleet, Oceania Sirena, is sailing a 34-day round-trip from Sydney in March and it's already wait-list only. Oceania Cruises christened the beautifully refurbished, 684-passenger ship in April this year; it is similar in size and design to its fleetmates Regatta, Insignia and Nautica, which are all former Renaissance R-class vessels. (As are Azamara Club Cruises' Azamara Journey and Quest.) Oceania's other two ships are the elegant, custom-built 1258-passenger Marina and Riviera, which were launched in 2011 and 2012.
Oceania Cruises has a reputation for fine dining and was the first cruise line to introduce a hands-on cookery school, the Bon Appetit Culinary Centre. Obviously they were on to something today cooking classes at sea are incredibly popular and are even popping up on river cruise ships. Oceania also started the trend for culinary-inspired, shopping-with-the-chef-type shore excursions.
French masterchef, TV star and author Jacques Pepin has been the line's executive culinary director since the start. He is still responsible for inspiring a team of chefs to produce a range of cuisines served across the fleet, in world-class restaurants that are all complimentary. Sirena has two new dining venues, Tuscan Steak, which pairs Italian fine dining with fresh seafood, and Red Ginger, which serves spicy Asian cuisine.
Oceania Insignia is also visiting Australia this season, as part of its 180 World Voyage, and will return in 2018 offering a series of Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific cruises.
What else is new for the line? Steve Odell, senior vice president andmanaging director Asia Pacific for NCLH, says, "With the launch of Oceania Sirena we introduced a range of new entertainment which we will be rolling out across the fleet. These new stage shows have been incredibly well received and include Cabaret Cinema, immersive acoustic musical performances and dance shows."
Will we be seeing more of Oceania Cruises' ships Down Under in the future, seeing as they have been so popular for the upcoming season? Odell says, "We are always looking for opportunities to develop new itineraries, and as we develop our 2017-18 plans for Oceania Cruises, which we will be announcing in the coming months, Australia is certainly high on the agenda."

The Cuban voyages will be on Oceania Cruises Sirena.
FLORIDA, United States, Friday March 24, 2017 Oceania Cruises, the cruise line that sailed into history earlier this month as the first major North American brand to travel to Cuba has announced 10 new cruises to the Spanish-speaking island for next year.
Sailing round-trip from Port Miami, itineraries range in length from 7 to 10 days, all including calls in Havana and the storied destinations of Cienfuegos, and Santiago de Cuba.
Cruises will begin May 4 and continue until October 26.
Added to the six journeys to Cuba aboard Insignia in the autumn of 2017, and added calls to Havana on four Regatta sailings in the spring and autumn of 2018, the 10 sailings on Sirena bring the number of Oceania cruises to Cuba through autumn 2018 to 20.
Sirena has 342 staterooms and suites and caters to 684 guests. It features four open-seating gourmet restaurants and Oceania Cruises said each of the voyages to Cuba will feature a wide array of authentic Cuban dishes, and experts will deliver lectures on Cuban history, art, and music.
