Watch: A Chilling Look at Duterte’s War on Drugs – Inquirer.net
Posted: March 27, 2017 at 5:25 am
There are no words for the unjust killings and unlawful actions the current administration has committed under the helm of its so-called war on drugs. Since President Dutertes inauguration, the body count has gone up to 7,000 and still counting. How bad is bad? A 14-minute documentary under the International Times Documentaries outlines the harrowing truth.
The documentary followsPhilippine Daily Inquirer photographerRaffy Lerma as he spends nights on the police beat, taking photos of dead bodies left on the street, the grief of family members as police take away another victim in a body bag. Raffy is the lensman behind the viral photograph that depicted Jennylyn Olaires cradling the dead body of spouse Michael Siaron, who was accused of drug pushing. The photo was the banner image of the the July 24, 2016 issue of thePhilippine Daily Inquirer and was criticized by Duterte himself.
The clips are graphic and will leave you utterly disturbed. All of this grief, brutality, and injustice go on without the president even blinking. In fact, clips of the various times Duterte publicly condoned these actions are played over the cries of the victims families. The ending will give you no hope as the end to this injustice seems to be nowhere in sight. Do watch it, however, because we shouldnt leave these truths nor these victims in the dark.

The New Hampshire Senate has approved an additional $4.5 million to beef up the front lines of the war on drugs.
More than a million dollars would go to hiring five new state troopers to intercept drugs coming into the Granite State from Massachusetts.
"I agree with it, they should, because it's getting bad," said Cheryl Vanmeter of Salem, New Hampshire.
Those additions troopers would be assigned to the communities on the Massachusetts border, targeting drug dealing traveling north.
"Their whole deal would be to dismantle the drug routes that are commonly used by drug dealers coming into the State of New Hampshire," explained Manchester Police Chief Nick Willard.
In many cases, those dealers are driving directly into Willards city. His department started targeting low level dealers in the summer of 2015. Operation Granite Hammer is now a statewide program that, under this bill, would get an additional $2.5 million.
"What drug dealers need to know, is we're going to come after you, we're going to disrupt your transportation routes, we're going to seize your money, seize your vehicles," Willard promised. "Then, if any of your drugs, the poison you put on our streets, lead to death of a citizen, be prepared to do a sentence that's akin to a murder."
The bill is expected to pass the House and Gov. Chris Sununu has promised to sign it.

Patrol dispatches new troopers in war on drugs, human trafficking – The Columbus Dispatch
Posted: at 5:25 am
Randy Ludlow The Columbus Dispatch @RandyLudlow
They marched into the State Highway Patrol Academy gymnasium in their dress uniforms, proclaiming in cadence, "Hail, hail State Patrol."
Minutes before raising their hands and being sworn in at their graduation, 85 cadets-turning-troopers were briefed on their mission.
Gone are the days, said Gov. John Kasich, when troopers spent most of their time sitting alongside highways handing out speeding tickets.
While still ensuring highway safety, the patrol is more focused these days on the interdiction of drugs and humans.
Public Safety Director John Born talked of a trooper's seizure of 2.2 pounds of the deadly opioid fetanyl 50 times as strong as heroin in an I-70 traffic stop, enough to kill more than 300,000 people.
Kasich talked of a trooper rescuing two frightened human-trafficking victims huddled in the back of a dark truck at a rest stop.
The cadets were dispersed to patrol posts throughout the state today to begin their careers as troopers after 23 weeks of training, including recognizing signs that may signal when motorists are packing illegal drugs.
The patrol has intensified its focus in intercepting drugs during the past six years, resulting in record seizures last year. Ohio led the nation with 3,050 drug-overdose deaths in 2015.
"There's a war in this state," Kasich proclaimed of the patrol's "dramatic change in mission."
The governor told the audience of hundreds that he hopes drug cartels and dealers are learning "Ohio may crush you" if they use the state's highways to transport their "poison," particularly opioids.
Troopers made record numbers of narcotic seizures last year while working Ohio's roads.
The extent of Ohio's heroin and opioid crisis was reflected in the statistics. The patrol seized 167 pounds of heroin last year, an increase of 316 percent from 2015.
A total of 64,708 opiate pills, such as painkillers, were captured, an increase of 90 percent from 2015. Compared to prior years, methamphetamine made a huge comeback, with 95 pounds seized, a 12-fold increase over 2015.
Drug-related arrests increased 8 percent to 13,334 statewide. The patrol said the drugs it took off Ohio's highways last year carried a contraband value of nearly $55.5 million, a 63-percent increase over the prior year.
Kasich told the newly minted troopers that there's is more than simply a job, but a chance to make a difference.
The governor counseled them to be observant, to be safe and to never forget who they serve the people of Ohio.

The generation that has been squatting atop American society for the past half-century will soon enough be gone, thank God. The Love Generation is dying off every day, but for the good of the world and especially America it cant happen fast enough.
The Baby Boomers think of themselves as creators of a wonderful world, a far better place than the one they inherited from their mean old uptight parents and all the rest of The Establishment they hated.
Baby Boomers (born between 1941 and 55 or so) believe their generation is the one that stopped the war in Vietnam, ended racism and sexism in America, and gave the world the best, grooviest, most amazing and thought-provoking music ever. None of this is even close to being true.
There are many reasons to despise the Love Generation. I loathe all those arrogant hippies for their towering greed and their willingness to bankrupt future generations so they are able to live in luxury via grand pensions and budget-busting Social Security payouts. Thats only the first on my list of grievances, and my list is a long one.
Boomers inherited a country with excellent public schools, fine public transportation, a healthy and robust middle class, rapidly improving racial relations, a healthy, poised military and, not least, a promising and optimistic outlook for the future.
All gone today. Behold to a country plundered by a single generation of greedy, lazy, stupid citizens.
Lets focus on a cornerstone that has propped up shifting cultural attitudes and assumptions since about 1965. I was 17 years old in 65 and even then, and even in the midwest, the push was on to glorify and consume illicit drugs. The push succeeded.
Look anywhere, and I suppose Ukiah is as good a place to look as any, and see the devastation wrought by our greedy, lazy, stupid fellow citizens. Ask Ukiah old-timers about changes theyve noticed over the past half-century and often youll get trembling, stuttering semi-coherent responses that go something like this: It just wasnt like this! This was a safe town, a nice town, not much crime, people got along with each other. Those whove lived here the longest are the ones most disgusted and disappointed at what Ukiah has become.
And it all began with marijuana. The hippie argument, not unreasonable, was that pot was a mild intoxicant and no worse than a Martini; the ongoing debate comparing and contrasting weed-whacked loadies to gin-soaked cocktailers remains unsettled.
Acceptance of marijuana was the first domino to fall. The official slogan among hippies became Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll! and what seemed at the time merely a defiant and rebellious t-shirt emblem in retrospect illuminated the shallow, short-sighted, self-absorbed core at the center of boomer values. Pot was the only thing my generation was willing to fight for. Who was supposed to fight back?
Cultural attitudes sagged and then collapsed under relentless pressure from the Love Generation, proving that from now on the nations children were in charge. The music, the movies, TV and all the media glommed onto a groovy new audience eager to tune in, turn on, and get incapacitated by drugs.
Cocaine became fashionable. Everyone from Jack Nicholson to Eric Clapton to McKenzie Phillips were open advocates of coke, and soon living rooms all across the country were infiltrated by mirrors, straws, coke spoons, deviated septums and ambulance crews. Heroin then made its appearance, and our social infrastructure began to wobble.
Crime got on a roll in big cities and small towns, even as legalization advocates continued to insist drug use was a victimless crime. Law enforcement cracked down, and the judicial system doubled down.
Now we stare out at the American landscape and watch an opioid wave roll across the land leaving nothing behind but casualties. The opioid crisis succeeded the heroin crisis, the crack cocaine crisis, the methamphetamine, ice, bath salts, fentanyl crisis and half a dozen other drug crises jumpstarted by the generation that launched the whole sorry mess 50 years ago.
How many homicides, suicides, robberies, overdoses, and destroyed lives can be fairly blamed on drugs? Thousands of men have spent vast portions of their lives in prison. Mothers have abandoned their children to foster care so they could do more meth, and now those kids are mucking up their own lives with our old friend marijuana.
How many of our inner cities and small towns have been destroyed? How many kids have dropped out of high school to join gangs? Those kids are fighting and killing each other in turf wars in order to sell drugs to your grandchildren so they can die too. Theres been no end to the criminality, the thieving, rehab, heartbreak, despair, depression, jail and broken dreams caused by drugs, and thats just the family next door.
But at least there havent been any victims.
Tom Hine, a former hippie and an early whiner for drug legalization, acknowledges his enthusiasm may have been misplaced, as it was for other causes. TWK, his imaginary friend, believes we should take a more holistic view and appreciate the cool druggie stuff like Peter Max posters, love beads, ugly tattoos and the songs of Donovan.

Euthanasia push in new WA parliament – SBS
Posted: at 5:22 am
A new bid for euthanasia laws will be presented when the Western Australian parliament resumes.
WA Greens MP Robin Chapple says he will work with new Labor minister Alannah MacTiernan to introduce mirror legislation to the upper house, as the state's laws do not allow joint bills.
Mr Chapple told AAP on Monday they were waiting on the outcome of a Victorian inquiry into the best model for euthanasia before moving forward and were looking for Liberal Party support after fellow advocate Tony Simpson lost his seat at the recent election.
Premier Mark McGowan supports voluntary euthanasia but he doesn't wish to politicise the issue by introducing law reform, so he would be giving Labor MPs a conscience vote on the bill.
Health Minister Roger Cook told The Sunday Times he supported euthanasia and that he would welcome a parliamentary committee inquiry prior to a bill being introduced.
Mr Chapple said that while the Greens had a euthanasia policy, he was working with Ms MacTiernan to ensure politics didn't prevent progress.
"We don't want people to see it as a Greens bill, we don't want the politics to be involved with this," he said.
"Politics gets in the way of good legislation."
He said the South Australian government handled a euthanasia bill poorly in November last year, which resulted in a rushed vote against legalising the right for terminally ill patients to end their lives.

Bid for voluntary euthanasia in WA – Perth Now
Posted: at 5:22 am
NEW Health Minister Roger Cook is calling for euthanasia to be legalised in WA in response to a growing demand for terminally ill patients to have the right to end their life.
Mr Cook said he supported voluntary euthanasia and wanted the WA public to have a considered and informed debate about law reform.
I support voluntary euthanasia and I think we need to legislate to enable people to take control of their lives in their final stages, he said.
Any debate in parliament on assisted suicide for terminally ill patients would have to be part of a wider community debate. Mr Cook said that while the Labor Government would not introduce law reform as part of a policy, it supported individual members to table a private members Bill.
He said Labor would allow MPs to exercise a conscience vote on euthanasia.
Labor MLC Alannah MacTiernan and Greens MLC Robin Chapple have been working towards introducing a Bill to allow assisted dying.
Mr Cook said he would welcome an inquiry by a parliamentary committee in the lead up to any Bill.
Last year, The Sunday Times WA Speaks survey of more than 10,000 West Australians showed almost 90 per cent supported voluntary euthanasia.
Mr Cook said the tragic death of the former executive director of the WA Cancer Council, 75-year-old Clive Deverall, should not be in vain.
Mr Deverall took his life on March 11 after suffering for 20 years from a rare form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
His wife, Noreen Fynn, revealed at his funeral on Monday that he had a left a note that said suicide is legal, euthanasia is not.
Mr Cook said if anything was to be gained from this very sad event then it should be proactive legislative change.
Ms MacTiernan, who is the new Agriculture Minister, said she would continue her work on law reform for dying with dignity.
I will ensure this legislation is introduced, she said.

Dutch GPs should refer rejected euthanasia requests to another doctor: end of life foundation – NL Times
Posted: at 5:22 am
Doctors in the Netherlands should refer their patients to another doctor if they can not or do not want to grant a euthanasia request themselves, according to the foundation Levenseindenkliniek(End of Life Clinic), ANP reports.
As expertise center in the field of euthanasia, the clinic mainly wants to deal with complex euthanasia cases, such as when it involves patients with dementia or psychiatric disorders. Yet a relatively large number of the cases they receive involve so-called "non-complex" euthanasia requests - involving patients with a terminal illness. These requests can be handled by the patient's own doctor, or a colleague, according to the foundation.
The clinic therefore wants to arrange a meeting with the professional group for doctors to discuss the matter.
Doctors organization KNMGalso wants to support doctors in referring euthanasia requests. "If a doctor can not agree to a request for euthanasia due to personal reasons, it is important that he speaks to the patient about it in a timely manner and helps him find another doctor", chairman Rene Heman said. "It is not a legal obligation, but a moral and professional responsiblity."

Iraq War vet fighting in Michigan court to save dogs from euthanasia … – WZZM13.com

IONIA, MICH. - Major, Mario and Luigi are on canine death row.
The three dogs were found inside a pen with three dead goats last July in Ionia County, and a judge ordered that they be killed.
But their owners, including an Iraq War veteran who relies on the animals to calm and comfort him, say they have evidence that exonerates the dogs in the goats' deaths. And they are asking another judge to spare the animals' lives.
"This is just one of those things where you scratch your head and say, 'how is this really happening in our state,'" said Lansing attorney Mary Chartier, who filed a brief in support of the families on behalf of the State Bar of Michigan's Animal Law Section. "They just dont want to admit that a mistake was made. It's troubling that this prosecutor refused to do that."
Ionia County Prosecutor Kyle Butler said he is simply enforcing the law and that the dog owners had their day in court
"Cases like these are unfortunate all around," Butler said in a prepared statement. "Nobody wins in a case like this."
The case appears to be pitting Ionia County Animal Control against Butler's office, which prosecuted the case based on a complaint filed by the agency.
Ionia County District Judge Raymond Voet ordered the dogs be destroyed after a hearing in late July, nearly three weeks after the dogs escaped from a backyard and were later found inside the pen with the dead goats. A dead cat also was found on the premises.
Family members later learned that an investigation by the county's animal shelter manager showed the dogs didn't kill the goats, their attorneys said. The manager determined the dogs found their way inside the goat pen long after the goats had died. None of the dogs had any blood on its fur or collar, indicating they could not have killed the goats, she said.
The shelter manager, Robin Anderson, also said the dogs were friendly and had shown no signs of aggression toward humans or other animals.
"It was never my opinion or the opinion of the Animal Control officer that these dogs should be destroyed," Anderson said in an affidavit dated both Aug. 2 and Oct. 13. "If I felt in any way that these animals were a danger to the public I would have no problem euthanizing them because public safety, above all else, comes first. However, I do not feel that way in this case."
The owner of the goats and cat initially told animal control staff that he didn't want to press charges but later indicated he wanted the dogs destroyed, according to the affidavit. The dog owners were cited for allowing their animals to run at large and for causing damage, it says.
Ionia County Circuit Judge Ronald Schafer affirmed Voet's ruling during a Jan. 20 appeal hearing. Schafer confined his review to the facts presented at trial and didn't find any errors in the proceeding, attorneys for the dog owners said.
Two of the dogs pit bull-mixes named Mario and Luigi are owned by Allen Hustin, of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, a U.S. Army veteran who served two tours of duty in Iraq and received the Purple Heart for injuries received in the conflict, attorneys for the families said. The dogs were recommended to him by a veterans group to help him cope with trauma, they said. He and his wife, an active service member stationed overseas, were visiting family in Ionia when the dogs got loose last summer.
The third dog - Major - is owned by Hustin's mother-in-law, Susan Owen. Attorneys said the dogs escaped from the yard through a hole in a fence caused by a lawnmower.
Mario and Luigi are in county custody. Major also was being held at the shelter but is now missing. The Ionia County Sheriff's Department is investigating the dog's disappearance, Butler said.
Until recently, the dog owners had represented themselves in court. Clarkston attorney Celeste Dunn and Grosse Pointe Farms attorney David Draper stepped in on their behalf after the appeal to circuit court failed. Dunn is donating her time. Draper is receiving some limited compensation from animal welfare groups.
They are asking Schafer to dismiss the case or grant a new trial, alleging important information was withheld from the trial judge. The court has the power to correct a "manifest injustice," Dunn said.
"This court can go beyond that (district court) record and say, 'there is a wrong here that needs to be corrected,'" she said.
A hearing is set for Wednesday morning, she said.
Butler said his office didn't withhold any information in its possession at the time of the hearing.
He said the owners of the dogs submitted evidence, questioned witnesses, testified on their own behalf and called a witness who does shepherd rescue work.
Butler also noted that his office is one of the few in the state that has a canine staff member to help crime victims, primarily children, feel more comfortable during court proceedings.
"However, despite the strong, positive emotions that our office has towards dogs, our office is also charged with the duty to enforce the law," he said in the statement. "In this case, the law was enforced, the accused had their due process and the judge ruled in accordance with the law."

UCFPD Responds to Accusations of Misused Resources by SGA Candidate: One thing has nothing to do with the other. – KnightNews.com

By: Andrew Franklin
Ina recent debate, SGA vice presidential candidate Jad Shalhoub stated, In light of this recent event that happened, you know, were going to have to meet with UCFPD and were going to have to beg them the question: do they feel like theyre spending too much of their resources toward victimless crimes.
Shalhoub continued, While theyre raiding bars, writing [minor in possession citations], you have people breaking into cars back where they could be patrolling. And so, given this recent incident, this is going to be a huge argument that were going to present as to, you know, what should we prioritize in the defense of students and student safety.
Shalhoubs comments reference an event that occurred Tuesday, March 21st when 36 cars were broken into near Lake Claire Apartments and on-campus Greek housing.
When asked to comment, the UCF Police Department responded bluntly, One thing has nothing to do with the other.
Courtney Gilmartin, UCFPD Public Information Officer, stated, UCFPD partners with the Orange County Sheriffs Office on an underage drinking and noise complaint detail called SNAP. Though its not always students favorite effort, we know based on data that drinking and parties are precursors to serious crimes (aggravated assaults, sexual assaults, DUIs, etc.); enforcing the law and preventing crime are what we do.
SNAP is an overtime detail, Gilmartin continued. Therefore, no on-duty patrol resources are being directed there. SNAP typically runs on the weekends, and it wasnt in effect early Tuesday when the auto burglaries took place.
Once UCFPD received a 911 call about the burglaries, officers arrived in under a minute and made every effort to apprehend the suspects.
I look forward to letting our community know that those responsible are behind bars, and our detectives are working diligently to make that happen, continued Gilmartin.
Shalhoub runs with Joshua Boloa on the ticket Josh and Jad. Their opponents are Nick Larkins and his running mate Cristina Barreto. Polls will be open March 27th-29th.
