Smugness watch: Some liberals say it’s okay to hate Trump voters – Fox News

Posted: March 23, 2017 at 2:26 pm

There is, in some precincts on the left, an earnest attempt to understand Trump voters, those strange creatures that are standing by their man, and figure out how the Democrats might win them back.

During the campaign I talked about Donald Democrats and how the billionaires appeal to working-class folks might help him win the election, as he did in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. The Dems used to be the party of the working class, but Trump made a connection that the party of global trade deals and climate change failed to forge.

Democrats often sound patronizing when speaking of Trump votersIts hard to win over voters whom youre insulting, New York Times columnist Nick Kristof wrote last month.

But now theres a counterargument emerging about Trump voters, which can be summarized thusly: Screw em.

This mad-as-hell view has been galvanized by reports that many Trump voters may lose their health insurance if the House version of ObamaCare repeal passes. The liberal gloaters say it serves them right.

From this perspective, those voters are too dumb to vote in their own economic self-interest and theyre probably gone for good. So its better to energize the Bernie Sanders base than to struggle to understand why many blue-collar Americans feel alienated from the Obama/Clinton party.

Frank Rich, the former Times columnist now with New York magazine, makes this argument in ridiculing what he calls Hillbilly Chic.

He questions whether pandering to Trump voters is another counterproductive detour into liberal guilt, self-flagellation, and political correctness. Rather than feeling everyones pain, might the time have at last come for Democrats to weaponize their anger instead of swallowing it?

Rich admits that the party is a wreck, with no power and most of its leaders of Social Security age. But he sees Trump voters as basically synonymous with the GOP:

That makes it all the more a fools errand for Democrats to fudge or abandon their own values to cater to the white-identity politics of the hard-core, often self-sabotaging Trump voters who helped drive the country into a ditch on Election Day. If we are free to loathe Trump, we are free to loathe his most loyal voters, who have put the rest of us at risk.

Sounds like Frank is weaponizing his own anger.

I just dont get the loathing, unless you subscribe to the view that anyone who supports Trump is by definition odious. If the Democrats write off everyone who backed Trump, even if it was because they didnt trust Hillary, arent they making it harder to put together an electoral majority of liberals and minorities?

Salon takes a different tack with a critical piece titled The Smug Style in American Politics. (There are photos of Rachel Maddow, Bill Maher and Keith Olbermann, though they have nothing to do with the article.)

The story by Conor Lynch says the Democratic view is of large numbers of American people voting against their apparent interests because of their ignorance and cultural backwardness.

After decades of watching millions of Americans vote for right-wing charlatans who advocated economic policies that serve the wealthy and screw everyone else, some liberals have basically given up on appealing to these perceived yokels, who seem to care more about criminalizing abortion and hoarding guns than obtaining health are and decent wages. They are dumb, credulous and often intolerant; so why should we progressive, rational, forward-thinking liberals sympathize or try to reason with them? Let them lose their health care; maybe theyll learn something this time around (though we all know they wont).

Lynch concludes that both parties have failed these voters and that cheering as people lose their health insurance may not be the best way to go about this.

Ya think?

We live in a divided country. And when Barack Obama won in 2008, some of those who opposed him tried to marginalize him and vowed to take our country back.

Do some in Obamas party want to do the same thing now? Blame not just the Republican president but the 60 million people who put him in the White House? Isnt that a big, well, smug?

Whoever the terrorist turns out to be he knew exactly what he was doing. The signal he sent out to the British people (and all the tourists who have ever visited Britain or are planning to visit Britain) was a very clear one: if we can get you here we can get you anywhere.

The killings happened beneath one of the worlds most famous landmarks: the tower of Big Ben overlooking Westminster Bridge and Parliament Square.

How many of us have not walked beneath it and mused nervously what a prime terrorist target it would be?

Then, probably, we will have corrected ourselves: No, theyd never try it here. Too many police. Too obvious.

Well, sorry. But they just did.

And now, as per usual on these occasions, the bien-pensant twonks on Twitter are seizing the opportunity to virtue-signal and dodge the issue by pretending its all about something else and nothing to do with the Religion of Peace (TM).

And now, look, heres the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, the guy who once called moderate Muslims Uncle Toms come to reassure us with his consoling message.

Oh they wont, will they? Well if they wont they are bloody stupid.

Of course, theyre cowed. Theyd be mad not to be cowed. Currently, they inhabit a culture in which the entire apparatus of authority the police, the schools, the universities, the social services, local government, the media, the politicians, the Mayor of London is bent on denyingsomething everyone knows to be true but which you cant mention aloud without fear of being accused of racism or Islamophobia or insensitivity.

Theres a significant minority of our population which has no interest in integrating with our culture. And which would either quite happily kill us or applaud quietly (or not-so-quietly) when it happens because, hey, were not humans were just kufar.

Western liberal values are being pushed to the limit. One day, theyre going to reach breaking point.

Mattis: Big defense spending boost needed now to fix readiness woes – Military Times

Posted: at 2:26 pm

WASHINGTONDefense Secretary Jim Mattis said a $30-billion boost in defense funding this fiscal year will produce immediate readiness dividends for the military, but Senate Democrats shrugged off his promises as an unrealistic, incomplete plan.

Lawmakers have until the end of next month to pass a budget for the final five months of fiscal 2017, after operating for months under a continuing resolution at last years funding levels.

President Trump has asked for a sizable jump in military funding right away, part of a multi-phase plan to boost defense spending and rebuild the military to address terrorist and hostile state threats against America today.

Mattis, in his first appearance before Congress as a Cabinet secretary, told members of the Senate Appropriations Committee that 15 years of war and the resulting deferred maintenance and training have left his department in need of immediate help, justifying what he acknowledged is a difficult funding request.

This increase in funding will help address the worsening security situation confronting us around the globe, he said. We must recognize that hesitation now to invest in defense would deepen the strategic mismatch between our future security and the military means to protect our people and freedoms.

He said with the extra money, the Pentagon could double the number of deployment-ready Army brigades this year, as well as get our aircraft back in the air, our ships back to sea. Mattis pushed back on Republican criticism that the $30-billion boost is too low, calling it the number we believe we can execute responsibly given the half-finished fiscal year.

But despite Republican support in the House and Senate for the plan, passage of the budget boost remains problematic given Democratic opposition.

Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee Ranking Member Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., called the plan an extremely reckless plan and an incomplete budget that does not address problems in a serious way.

He said if the plan were to pass as presented, it would trigger an automatic 5 percent across-the-board budget cut to Defense Department accounts because administration officials opted not to include a formal sequestration repeal in the plan.

I dont know why theyre playing games, he said.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., stated that slashing non-defense spending to pay for defense is not a solution." Democrats for the last six years have blocked Republican plans to increase military spending without more fiscal freedom for other domestic priorities.

But he said the defense funding situationmy responsibilityneeds immediate resolution, noting that looming threats have outstripped the level of resources we have been allocating to defense.

House lawmakers have already passed a fiscal 2017 defense appropriations measure, and Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee Chairman Thad Cochran, R-Miss., said he hopes to move on the issue soon.

But Democrats have said they wont move ahead with the defense budget until other domestic spending plans are also outlined. And Senate Democratic leaders have threatened to block any fiscal 2017 funding plan if it includes money for a southern border wall, one of Trumps top spending priorities.

Here’s how Republicans could get another shot at health care and taxes – MarketWatch

Posted: at 2:25 pm

House Speaker Paul Ryan is trying to push health-care reform and a tax overhaul through Congress.

So, say the Republicans effort to pass their Obamacare repeal-and-replace bill blows up on Thursday, or in the next few weeks. Can that effort and a separate push for tax reform recover?

Technically, the answer is yes, thanks to whats known as reconciliation. Politically, it could be a far different story.

Heres the latest: A vote on the American Health Care Act is still planned for Thursday but no time was set as of the early afternoon, as there were signs negotiations were ongoing. Members of the House Freedom Caucus conservatives who say the bill wont lower premiums, among other criticisms met with President Donald Trump and said theres no deal yet.

Were trying to get to yes, said Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows of North Carolina.

Republicans are trying to move both their health and tax bills through Congress using the procedure known as reconciliation. The advantage of that process, which is limited to budget-related legislation, is it requires just a simple majority in the Senate. Republicans control 52 seats there, so bills they all agree on would be foolproof.

The complicating factor here is that there are two separate attempts at using reconciliation: one for health care and another for a tax overhaul. The plan was to use the fiscal 2017 process for health care and the fiscal 2018 process for the tax code. The health-care course has been set, with lawmakers approving a budget resolution in January that contained repeal-and-replace instructions.

But Congress hasnt passed a separate resolution with instructions for a tax rewrite using reconciliation.

So a new resolution could be the Republicans ticket to a fresh crack at health care and tax reform. As Ed Lorenzen of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget explains, such resolutions are supposed to pass in the spring before a fiscal year begins. That means now, since fiscal 2018 begins Oct. 1.

The window is closing, in that they cant really even start the process on tax reform until they pass a new budget resolution, Lorenzen said.

Citi analysts wrote in a note on Thursday that Republicans could include their health bill in the fiscal 2018 reconciliation bill, together with tax reform. But they say the strategy is risky given lawmakers limited bandwidth to address the two issues at the same time.

Lorenzen agrees, saying youre combining two sets of potentially controversial issues and its harder to get votes.

Citis analysts, meanwhile, think the health bill will stall and lawmakers will turn their focus to tax reform.

Our base-case is that the AHCA passes the House, with a likely thin majority, but is ultimately voted down by the Senate and/or placed on the back burner by the Republican leadership in order to focus upon tax reform, the analysts wrote.

House expected to vote on health care bill as early as today – Talk Media News

Posted: at 2:25 pm

WASHINGTON- The Republican-sponsored health carebill may come to the House floor as early as today the anniversary of thepassageof Obamacare.

The House Rules Committee on Wednesday spent more than 12 hours debating the legislation in lieu of failed Democratic requests that consideration be delayed until the Congressional Budget Office releases its report on the managers amendment which includes proposals to change Medicaid distribution to states.

The Rules Committee has not yet reported the bill for a floor vote, as House GOP leaders are still uncertain if the legislation will pass.

The American Health Care Act has been approved by the House Budget Committee, the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee.

Members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus have expressed concerns over certain provisions contained in the bill such as the inclusion of refundable tax credits to compensate for the phasing-out of federal tax subsidies that under the Affordable Care Act are allocated to those who cannot afford to pay their monthly premiums.

The Freedom Caucus also expressed opposition to a provision of the bill that allowed for a three-year continuance of Medicaid expansion. They want to cap the expansion at the end of the current fiscal year.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday met with GOP Congressional leaders on Capitol Hill and reportedly told lawmakers in attendance that they wouldnot likely be reelected if they did not support the legislation.

Changes have been made to the bill such as a proposal to allow states more flexibility in how they use Medicaid grants. The proposal also would allow states to require Medicaid recipients to work for their benefits.

Other compromises include expanding the tax credit provision so as to allow more generous benefits for seniors.

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) has stated that he will not support the legislation and it has been reported that 20 other Republican lawmakers also have stated that will not support the bill.

President Trump is scheduled to meet with Freedom Caucus leaders this morning.

Several moderate Republicans have also expressed opposition to the bill.

The legislation needs 218 votes to pass the House.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and fellow GOP Congressional leaders have stated that they worked hard to address Freedom Caucus concerns but thatthe legislation cannot please every Republican lawmaker because it must conform with the budget reconciliation process to avoid a potential Senate filibuster.

Senate reconciliation ruleswould allow the replacement component of the bill to bypass the 60-vote threshold and instead pass with a simple majority.

The legislation is expected to come to the House floor no later than Monday.

Nevada students may be mandated to start school at age 5 – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Posted: at 2:25 pm

Nevada students would be mandated to start school by age 5 and could start as young as 4 in pre-kindergarten programs under a bill introduced in the Assembly on Wednesday.

Assembly Bill 186 was introduced by Assemblywoman Olivia Diaz, D-North Las Vegas, during an Assembly Education Committee meeting. The committee took no action on the bill.

We know from an abundant amount of studies that, the earlier we make this investment, the greater the return, Diaz said. Theres many of our students who are not privileged to attend a preschool program. A lot of them lag behind when they finally come through our school gates.

School districts would be required to establish pre-kindergarten programs. Some schools have programs now, funded through federal and state grants. The state estimates less than 15 percent of 4-year-olds are served in a pre-kindergarten program.

The bill would also move the compulsory school attendance age from 7 to 5, forcing more students into kindergarten. Districts are mandated to offer kindergarten programs already, but families do not have to enroll their children.

The Department of Education projected that doing both would cost $176 million for fiscal 2017-18 and $178 million in fiscal 2018-19. Gov. Brian Sandovals proposed budget does not include the funding for this bill.

Representatives from the Clark and Washoe county school districts spoke in support of the bill.

Lowering the compulsory age drew the most criticism, including from the Nevada Homeschool Network.

Our basic premise is that parents need to be the one who decides when their children enter school, said Elissa Wahl, the organizations chairwoman. The biggest sticking point is that this is not voluntary.

Assemblyman Chris Edwards, R-Las Vegas, also cautioned against too much of a good thing.

We have to be careful of pushing kids too early because of maturity level. My concern is that we dont get to the point where were pushing kids to get into pre-K when theyre simply not mature enough, he said.

Nevada Families for Freedom focused on the cost of the program, saying more taxpayer dollars would be used to institutionalize little children.

Government preschool programs dont work and are costly for taxpayers. The schools are already having difficulty accomplishing what they are supposed to do, the organization wrote in a letter to the committee.

Italian millennials ‘won’t reach financial independence until age 50 … – The Local Italy

Posted: at 2:25 pm

The time it takes for young Italians to reach financial independence is steadily increasing, with today's children unlikely to be economically secure before their 50's, a study has warned.

By 2020, the average 20-year-old Italian will have 18 years to wait before living independently, researchers estimated. The milestone of 'independent living' was measured by a number of factors, including having a home, steady income, and the ability to support a family.

The figures come from a report by the Bruno Visentini Foundation, 'Generation gap, from conflicts to solidarity', presented at Luiss University on Wednesday morning.

Researchers said that Italians who had turned 20 in 2004 could expect to be living independently within ten years. However, that figure has increased steadily and is set to reach 28 years by 2030.

In other words, today's children can only expect to have 'grown up' once they're nearing their 50's. According to the foundation's research, the generation gap in Italy is the second-worst in Europe, beaten only by Greece.

The study's authors presented some possible solutions to the crisis, including an overhaul of the tax system and extra funds for youth policies.

They called for "a pact between the generations", which would require around a million elderly Italians - those receiving the most generous pensions - to make a "solidarity contribution". This money would go to help 'Neets', the Italian term for young adults who are neither employed nor enrolled in a study programme.

Together with more tax incentives for the young, and "the creation of financial instruments which can multiply the effect of the solidarity pact", these measures could help millennials on their way to financial independence sooner.

According to the researchers, such a change is necessary "not just for ethical reasons, but also for socio-economic ones."

They estimated the cost of young adults, aged between 15 and 29 who are neither studying nor working, to the Italian economy to be 32 billion each year - a figure which has risen sharply from 23.8 billion just under a decade ago.

Italy's youngest generation has been disproportionately affected by the economic crisis and ongoing employment crisis.

Last year, for the first time, the millennial generationbecame the poorest, data from Caritas showed. This rise in poverty has been linked to a number of other trends, such as the slowing birth rate and the rise in the average age at which youngsters fly the nest.

Eurostat statistics in October 2016 showed that less than a third of under-35's in Italy had left their parental home, a figure 20 percentage points higher than the European average and surpassed only in Slovakia.

Young Italians were famously branded 'bambiccioni' (big babies) by ex-Italian finance minister Tomasso Padoa-Schiopa in 2007 - a term which has stuck. However, in addition to economic worries, economists have argued that clingy parents are actually to blame for the high rate of young adults living at home.

Sealand Road ‘average speed’ camera system to be up and running in weeks – Deeside.com

Posted: at 2:24 pm

A new average speed camera enforcement system on the A548 Sealand Road will be up and running in weeks Flintshire County Council has said.

Work is set to begin next week on the new camera system by the council in partnership with Gosafe, it will be live in weeks they say.

The new speed camera system will manage the speeds of motorists along this route which has historically witnessed a number of serious, speed related accidents.

Campaigners have been battling for years to see action taken ofn the busy link road between Chester and Flintshire.

Businessman Adam Dandy and councillors Christine Jones and David Wisinger have been at the forefront of a campaign to see a new speed camera installed on the road.

Mr Dandy who owns Dandys Topsoil which is close to where two fatal collision took place said;

After receiving the news that Flintshire County Council would be installing average speed cameras along Sealand Rd, I spoke with the mothers of two young men who sadly lost their lives on this stretch of road, both told me that they hoped that the new system would prevent yet another family from having to loose a loved one on this Rd in the future.

I would like to thank local Cllrs Christine Jones, David Wisinger, Cllr Bernie Attridge and Leader of FCC Aaron Shotton for their tremendous support and determination, to do everything in their power to protect local families and workers who use Sealand Rd, from future speed related deaths and injuries.

Whilst speed cameras are not popular in general, and educating drivers to drive safely is the most important tool in trying to prevent speed related road accidents, we as a community can no longer sit by and watch even more people loosing their lives on this stretch of road, without doing all we could to try to prevent more families from suffering.

The council say appropriate signage will be installed at the entry points and additional repeater camera signs will be installed along the section of Sealand Road affected by the proposals.
