NASA Develops Next-Gen Atomic Clock For Space Exploration – News18
Posted: March 23, 2017 at 2:10 pm
In a key advance for safely navigating future human exploration of the solar system, NASA said it is set to send its next-generation atomic clock to space in late 2017.
This clock will be smaller, lighter and magnitudes more precise than any atomic clock flown in space before, NASA said.
Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California have completed integration of the instrument, the Deep Space Atomic Clock, with the spacecraft that will take it into orbit later in 2017, the US space agency said in a statement on Tuesday.
Timekeeping plays a critical role in spacecraft navigation and will be especially important for future deep space missions.
Most spacecraft are tracked using "two-way" methods -- the ground-based antenna 'pings' the spacecraft and waits for the signal to return.
By measuring how long the signal takes to travel, the distance to the spacecraft can be calculated.

A navigation team then processes this information to determine the spacecraft's flight path and also determine if any course corrections are required.
The next-generation atomic clock developed by NASA enables "one-way" tracking, where the spacecraft does not need to send the signal back to Earth.
The tracking measurements could be taken onboard and processed with a spacecraft-based navigation system to determine the path and whether any manoeuvre are needed to stay on course.
This will be a key advance for safely navigating future human exploration of the solar system by providing astronauts with their position and velocity when they need it, according to NASA.
It will lighten the load on the antennas in NASA's Deep Space Network, allowing more spacecraft to be tracked with a single antenna.
The Deep Space Atomic Clock would also improve the precision and quantity of the radio data used by scientists for determining a planet's gravity field and probing its atmosphere, NASA said.

In Alabama church, marijuana is part of spiritual journey – Tuscaloosa News
Posted: at 2:08 pm
By Greg GarrisonAL.com
BIRMINGHAM With a stained-glass window behind them, a lineup of speakers stepped to the front of the church and talked about the potential health benefits of legalizing plants that are currently outlawed in Alabama.
"I smoke cannabis on a daily basis for my pain," said Janice Rushing, president of the Oklevueha Native American Church of Inner Light in Alabama. "If I did not, I'd be on pain pills."
Her husband, Christopher Rushing, chief executive officer of Oklevueha Native American Church of Inner Light, says he also uses marijuana routinely.
The Rushings founded the Oklevueha Church in 2015 and claim that it has a legal exemption for its members to smoke marijuana and ingest hallucinogenic mushrooms and peyote cactus.
At a January forum with an audience of about 30 gathered at Unity Church in Birmingham, which allowed the use of its facilities, speakers discussed the potential benefits of marijuana and other substances for medicinal purposes.
"I had an ungodly facial rash," said Sherrie Saunders, a former U.S. Army medic who is now a member of Oklevueha Native American Church in Alabama.
"We made a cream that completely got rid of that rash," Mrs. Rushing said.
Someone in the audience discussed a heart problem and sleep apnea.
"That could be something that cannabis could help," Saunders said.
She also said marijuana can ease manic bipolar disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.
"The medical establishment took away cannabis so they could sell us pills," Saunders said.
Before marijuana was stigmatized as an illegal drug, Native Americans valued it as a natural herbal treatment for more than 90 percent of sicknesses, she said. "A woman in Nicaragua showed me how to cure cancer with cannabis," Saunders said.
The woman had a son who was cured, she said. "I know why," Saunders said. "God and cannabis."
The National Cancer Institute, in its overview of cannabis in treatment of cancer, makes no claims for curative powers, but acknowledges that cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years and that it "may have benefits in the treatment of cancer-related side effects."
Chris Rushing stood in the pulpit and preached a sermon that mixed theology and a belief in natural, hallucinogenic plants. "That is God's way of turning our brain on," Rushing said.
"These entheogens work like tools to open up spaces and pathways of the mind," Rushing said. "Yet it's illegal. We all walk around producing natural chemicals that do the same."
Rushing said it does not make sense that pharmaceutical companies make large profits on harmful synthetic and dangerous drugs, while plant and herbal medicines are illegal.
Rushing said the health benefits of marijuana, mushrooms and cacti are enormous. They can combat depression and cure people of addictions, he said.
The Oklevueha Native American Church of Inner Light in Warrior has been licensed as a federally registered branch of the Oklevueha Lakota Sioux Nation Native American Church, Rushing said.
The church has a religious exemption to use psylocibin mushrooms and peyote cactus, both of which have properties that augment traditional Native American spiritual beliefs and experiences, Rushing said. He calls their use in religious ceremonies a sacrament.
All 120 members in the Alabama church carry photo identification, similar to a driver's license, that identifies them as members of a church that has a federal religious exemption to use natural drugs that are otherwise prohibited by law, he said.
He believes all natural plants should be legal for medicinal use, including marijuana, peyote cactus and psylocibin mushrooms.
Rushing carries around with him documentation of court rulings such as a unanimous ruling in United States v. Robert Boyll in the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, which found that a non-Native American who was arrested for possession and intent to distribute peyote had the same constitutional protections as Native American members of the church.
Rushing said he was licensed in the church by James Warren "Flaming Eagle" Mooney of Utah, who won a court battle with the state of Utah. The Utah Supreme Court ruled in Mooney's favor in 2004, in State of Utah vs. Mooney's and Oklevueha Native American Church. The state had argued that Mooney was engaged in a criminal enterprise for distributing peyote and tried to seize the church property. The Supreme Court ruled that the Native American Church was entitled to the religious exemption.
After the Jan. 21 forum at Unity Church, some in attendance expressed hope Alabama might soon follow in the footsteps of other states that have legalized marijuana. More than half of the states have decriminalized marijuana for medical uses and eight states have decriminalized marijuana for recreational uses.
Some of them say the Oklevueha Native American Church of Inner Light in Alabama is helping raise awareness.
"I think Chris' work is vital," said Jonah Tobin, founder of the Alabama Mother Earth Sustenance Alliance, or MESA. "People like him are part of that movement."

Sander van Doorn’s new alias, Purple Haze, explores the darker side of trance – Dancing Astronaut
Posted: at 2:07 pm
Sander vanDoorn has been a trance force to-be-reckoned since the mid-2000s. Before transitioning into a moreprogressive house style, the Dutch producer actually nestled hisearly recording career in the tech-trance pillar of dance music. Over the weekend,Sanders socials went completely dark in a move that ultimately signified a return to this style.Emerging from the ashes was the launch of his alter ego: Purple Haze.
Themove towards a new moniker surfaced when van Doorn previewed the track Neilojon A State of Trance(Episode 804) earlier this month. The mastered version of Neiloj is set for May 15 release on his Doorn Records imprint.
The full live experience will be revealed during the official Purple Haze launch at Ultra Music Festival in Miami, although he beganpreviewing new material in Australia last week. What better timing for the official debut of such a creative pursuit, which marks a return to van Doorns darker, moodierbeginnings; if nothing else, the project demonstrates his versatility as an artist as well as howattuned he is toindustry trends.
Given the sheerquality and sharp, sinister feelof Purple Haze Bliksem, wereincredibly eagerto see whats in store for the trance luminary duringMiami Music Week.

Move combines transportation software with TruckRight driver recruiting and retention system.
By DC Velocity Staff
Logistics software provider TMW Systems Inc. said Wednesday it has integrated its TMW.Suite transportation management solution (TMS) with the TruckRight driver recruiting and retention system.
Driver data created or modified within the TruckRight portal can now be pushed automatically to a driverprofile within the TMW.Suite solution, enabling carrier, broker, and third-party logistics provider (3PL) users of TMW.Suite to access up-to-date driver names, license numbers, contact information, and other data without re-keying information, TMW said.
By linking the systems, TMW says it can help transportation companies recruit drivers faster and retain them longer, while using the TMS to integrate and control many operational functions of the end-to-end transportation process.
Truck-Right Data Management Inc.'s TruckRight product provides a paperless workflow that provides automated compliance management and allows transportation companies to manage applicant tracking systems, driver qualification files, learning management systems for online training and orientation, driver/employee portals, and more.

EDAP TMS SA (NASDAQ: EDAP) today announced the publication of a peer-reviewed article that analyzed Ablatherm Robotic HIFU for prostate tissue ablation in patients who had previously undergone radiotherapy treatment. The article concludes that HIFU should be considered as a valuable therapeutic option for carefully selected patients who failed a previous radiotherapy treatment. The article has been published in the January 2017 edition of the prestigious peer-reviewed British Journal of Urology International.
Authored by Pr. Sbastien Crouzet, M.D., Ph.D., from Edouard Herriot Hospital, Lyon, France, and co-authored by lead urologists from nine institutions across France, Germany, UK, Italy and the USA, this retrospective analysis was designed to evaluate the outcomes of Ablatherm Robotic HIFU for the treatment of patients who had been previously treated with radiotherapy and were indicated for additional prostate tissue ablation. The results were compiled from the Ablatherm treatment registry (@-RegistryTM), a multicenter secure online database for patients who have undergone prostate HIFU with Ablatherm. Inclusion criteria for the analysis were applied to the database, resulting in 418 patients with available data. Statistical models were applied to the data, using the longest available follow-up timepoint for each outcome and patient. Based on the Kaplan Meier survivorship analysis of this data, the rates of overall survival, cancer specific survival, and metastasis free survival at 7 years were 72%, 82%, and 81%, respectively.
Pr. Sbastien Crouzet commented: "This is the largest series of salvage patients treated with HIFU and followed for data collection. The results are encouraging, and support the use of Ablatherm Robotic HIFU for these patients who are particularly fragile after the failure of their radiation treatment and are limited to minimally invasive treatment options. Patients who require additional treatment after a radiation therapy may benefit from prostate tissue ablation with HIFU."
Marc Oczachowski, Chief Executive Officer of EDAP TMS, added: "There is a growing number of patients who failed their radiotherapy treatment and require a secondary option; this large and growing market opportunity is the result of an as-yet unmet medical need. Pr. Sbastien Crouzet's clinical publication reconfirms that EDAP's Ablatherm HIFU technology offers a valuable answer to this need and is well positioned to serve this growing population with minimal competition."

Neurotechnology releases new SentiVeillance SDK – Biometric Update
Posted: at 2:04 pm
March 22, 2017-
Neurotechnology has released SentiVeillance 6.0 software development kit (SDK), which provides improved facial recognition using up to 10 surveillance, security and public safety cameras on a single computer, making it suitable for a wide range of surveillance applications.
According to a company statement, the new version uses deep neural-network-based facial detection and recognition algorithms to improve accuracy, and it utilizes a Graphing Processing Unit (GPU) for enhanced speed. In addition, users can more quickly and easily adjust the tradeoff between speed and accuracy as needed for different applications.
We developed SentiVeillance 6.0 as a self-adapting system based on deep neural networks that were trained on a larger quantity of data, said Ignas Namajunas, surveillance technologies research lead for Neurotechnology. This ensures better generalization for a variety of conditions. Additionally, by making use of the GPU processing capabilities, we were able to improve the processing speed significantly.
As with previous versions, the new SentiVeillance provides: real-time moving object detection; tracking and classification for pedestrians, vehicles and other predefined object classes based on size and speed of movement, and; area control that triggers events when people or objects enter, leave or stay in restricted areas.

Senate resolution supports economic collaborations with Israel – The Albany Herald
Posted: at 2:04 pm
WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Sens. David Perdue, R-Ga.; Chris Coons, D-Del.; Cory Gardner, R-Colo., and Jon Tester, D-Mont., introduced bipartisan legislation Wednesday to recognize the accomplishments of the U.S.-Israel economic partnership and support new agreements for collaboration across a variety of sectors within the technology sphere.
Since the signing of the U.S.-Israel Free Trade Agreement, Israel has become one of the countrys largest economic collaborators in the Middle East and North Africa. Individual states are partnering with Israel to on life-changing medical breakthroughs and clean energy technology.
The kawmakers say the legislation is aimed at supporting and improving those partnerships.
Israel is a hub for innovation, and our strong alliance has paved the way for great economic opportunities, Perdue said. We will continue working with Prime Minister Netanyahu to explore new areas for collaboration across the economic spectrum.
I am proud to cosponsor a resolution that commemorates the strong economic ties between the United States and Israel and highlights opportunities for increased partnerships in fields such as agriculture, cybersecurity, and medicine, Coons added. I continue to be impressed with the entrepreneurial spirit of the Israeli people and will work with my colleagues to counter the economic isolation of Israel.
The other bill sp0nsors offered similar praise for the U.S.-Israeli partnership.
The U.S.-Israel alliance not only plays an important role to ensure peace and stability across the globe, but also serves both countries economic interests, Gardner said. As the only democracy in the Middle East, Israel highlights the benefits of a free society. Strong economic ties between our two nations have led to a partnership that both countries can be proud of, and as we look toward the future, we must continue to find ways we can work together to develop new technologies that will change the world.
The senators were joined by U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine; Ted Cruz, R-Texas; Johnny Isakson, R-Ga.; Tim Kaine, D-Va.; Gary Peters, D-Mich., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in introducing Senate Resolution 90, which seeks to affirm the robustness of the economic relationship; recognize that science and technology innovation present new frontiers for economic cooperation; encourage the administration to expand and regularize existing forums of economic dialogue with Israel; and support the exploration of new agreements, including in the fields of energy, water, agriculture, medicine, neurotechnology and cybersecurity.
U.S. Reps. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., and Ted Poe, R-Texas, introduced companion legislation to the Senate resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives.
