Le-Vel’s new premium nootropic capsule designed to support, optimize mental capabilities – Yahoo Finance
Posted: at 10:30 pm
FRISCO, Texas, March 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --Over time, and thanks in large part to our overscheduled lives, we just don't feel as sharp as we once did. But here's the good news: We don't have to accept it. We do, in fact, have the power to expand our brain functioning -- effectively and naturally.
Le-Vel Brands, the world leader in human nutritional innovation, is thrilled to introduce Expand, part of an incredible new category of products designed to help support healthy cognition. Like all Le-Vel products, Expand is based on premium-grade ingredients and a superior formula and delivery system for maximum results. It's a safe and easy-to-use product you can carry with you on the go. Expand was designed to help reinforce the brain's inherent capabilities, modulate the cognitive blueprint, and support mental and cognitive capabilities.
Le-Vel's customers immediately recognized the incredible benefits of Expand. With over $1 million in sales in less than 24 hours in a limited release -- a figure that doubled with the full launch -- Expand already has made its mark on Le-Vel's THRIVE Plus line of products.
Your brain stops growing when you're around 18 years old, but that doesn't mean you can't reshape and strengthen it. In fact, every time you have a new thought or create a new memory, the structure of your brain changes. That's called neuroplasticity, and we can increase it at any time by seeking new opportunities to learn. When your brain is receiving the nutrition it needs, it becomes far easier not only to take in new information, but also to recall and utilize it later. Neuroplasticity increases, and your brain becomes a more efficient, more powerful machine.
Expand represents Le-Vel's entry into a category called nootropics, or cognitive-supporting supplements intended to help users improve concentration and focus and support optimized mental processing. The goal of nootropic products is to help your brain function at its best and enhance your ability to learn.
Life's demands leave many of us frazzled, distracted and unable to concentrate. When we're pulled in so many directions, it's difficult if not impossible to perform at premium level. Details slip through the cracks and we feel fried. And, when we're in that state, our brains aren't as open to learning; instead, we're just surviving. Getting more sleep, finding time for exercise and cutting stress out of your life aren't always possible, but what you can control is your nutrition. With a quick and easy daily regimen like Expand, optimal cognitive nutrition is, well, a no-brainer.
"When we talk about health and wellness, physical fitness is only part of the equation. To live life on all cylinders, we've got to take care of both the body and the mind," say Le-Vel Co-CEOs, Co-Founders and Co-Owners Jason Camper and Paul Gravette. "In fact, we should commit to keeping our brains fit just like we do our bodies. Like all Le-Vel products, Expand brings the gold standard of premium-grade ingredients, along with a superior formula and delivery mechanism for safe and positive results. It's an incredibly exciting new product category that will empower people of all ages and lifestyles to seek their fullest potential."

Why Would People Without Diabetes Monitor Their Blood Sugar? – A Sweet Life
Posted: at 10:30 pm
Earlier this month, Gizmodo published a story about Sano Intelligence, a healthcare startup that is making a continuous glucose tracker that sticks to a users skin and monitors blood sugar elevations through a mobile app. The news Gizmodo wanted to make a point of is that Sano plans to market the product to people without diabetes. If youre wondering what the tech publication thought of it, their headline says it all: Nobody Needs This Silicon Valley-Made Blood Sugar Tracker.
My first instinct was also that it sounded ridiculous and in my head I poked fun: Ooh, look what this slice of pizza does to my blood sugar. Cool! I couldnt imagine why anyone with normal body functions would want to be privy to their short-term spikes and dips. It appeared that Sano was taking short cuts. Instead of focusing on changing the lives of people with diabetes, the company was looking to make a quick buck. (Quick in medical-device land is still far from quick.)
After my initial reactionary response, I spent time thinking about why anyone would want to be tethered to physical updates like those of us with diabetes (myself included). Are people without diabetes curious to learn more about their deeper metabolic functions? And, is it worth it to those of us with diabetes to keep an eye on new product launches like the one from Sano Intelligence?
But first, what is it? The Sano tracker is a small stick-on sensor that feels like a piece of Velcro. Its covered in hundreds of tiny microstructures that are less than half a mm in length, says Ashwin Pushpala, CEO of Sano Intelligence. The daily-use patch goes into the skin with the help of an applicator and is far less invasive than the Libre or other CGMs currently on the market. Pushpala hopes to have it available later this year.
Going this route, as a lifestyle-enhancement tool versus a diagnostic one used to make insulin-dosing decisions, allows the startup to get to market quicker and instead of a rigorous FDA approval, it can apply for a simpler form of regulatory sign off for what the FDA considers to be a low-risk device. This category refers to technology thats intended to promote, track, and/or encourage choice(s) which, as part of a healthy lifestyle, may help living well with certain chronic diseases or conditions.
Currently, there are no solutions on the market that provide a painless, discreet, or affordable way for people with pre-diabetes to monitor their glucose levels to make more informed diet and exercise choices. We feel very strongly that we want to build a product that fits their needs, says Pushpala.
With type 2 diabetes on the riseundiagnosed and diagnosedand vast numbers categorized with pre-diabetes (some say 50% of Americans), its reason enough to view what Sano is planning as potentially good for everyone. This population needs a simpler tech solution that they can adopt with minor inconveniences. The once-a-day patch from Sano could be the answer, and even if it isnt, who are we to say it shouldnt be attempted? Sano gets a return on years of research, a larger pool of consumers to sell to and it avoids lengthy clinical trials and years of red tape.
While I was considering this idea of a world of people wearing glucose trackers, I reached out to Geoffrey Woo, CEO and co-founder of Nootrobox, a nootropics-based startup located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Woo started his company with a desire to improve cognition. His goal: to grow more neurons in the brain. There was a misperception that you couldnt grow new ones, says Woo.
Much like vitamins, nootropicssmart drugs or cognitive enhancershas both believers and naysayers. Early adopters that have warmed to this field call themselves biohackers and theyre looking to re-engineer their bodies to be smarter, more creative and more alert. One of the ways they do this is by obsessively watching their intake of food.
How do we watch our bodys reaction to food? By wearing a CGM. Woo wears an Abbott FreeStyle Libre and loves it. Youre more thoughtful in your biometrics, says Woo. Woos goal is to track his mental claritywhere he is at a normal state and how he can get to an enhanced state. Why do you crash after a big meal? asks Woo. By tracking his meals Woo feels that he can refer back to the truth, which will enforce good behavior.
We all know a Coke, fries and hamburger arent good for us, but seeing my blood sugar spike to 13.4 (241) is like, Thats an insane jump! says Woo. For help in understanding his bodys mechanics, Woo has Dr. Manual Lam, Nootrobox science and clinical lead. Lam also works at a hospital in Palo Alto, and is a believer in many of the things that Woo holds dear, namely our ability to re-boot our bodies at a cellular level.
A lot of chronic diseases are due to nutrition and diet. Its funny that doctors are the ones teaching it and weve only gotten four weeks of nutrition or one semester of biochemistry, says Lam. As a hospitalist at a government funded hospital, Lam sees a wide range of sick patients, including those with type 2 diabetes. I think there are some fundamental principles that have been propagated, says Lam. If were all doing the right thing, why is there an increase in obesity and diabetes?
While Nootrobox, which currently doesnt market anything for people with diabetes, wasnt able to get funding on a recent episode of Shark Tank, the company is growing. It might take time for nootropics to go mainstream, but its believers, those who want to gain valuable insights into their bodies, could be the first wave in diabetes tools gaining tractioneven with those of us with diabetes.
Sano Intelligence is committed to casting a wide net with its technology. Our beta release that we are targeting for later this year is step one, says Pushpala. As we continue to test and conduct clinical trials, we are absolutely taking all the steps necessary for FDA approval of future device designs that will target the diabetic market.
If the increased attraction in specialty diets like Whole30, Ketogenic and Paleo are any example, it wont be long before more people are embracing what were previously considered to be tools for people with diabetes. I use [the Libre] all the time, its important to have a visual reminder. Everyone is going to be diabetic or obese and we need more tools to help us. A CGM is a good alarm clock to pull us back, says Woo.
Larissa Zimberoff was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 33 years ago. She is an avid cyclist and a passionate supporter of bike lanes, free WiFi and the Affordable Care Act. Unearthly Trance : Stalking the Ghost – Treble
Posted: at 10:30 pm
Stalking the Ghost is the latest in a long line of albums that gives credence to the idea of genre experimentation within metal. Thats a good thing. From fluctuating tempos, to a magnification of breathy vocals alongside to gut-wrenchingly dark guitars, to the signature grooves Unearthly Trance have embraced over their storied career, Stalking the Ghost sits between a realm of familiarity and a choice experimentation, teetering between the two to try and capture dread and anguish alongside drastic sonic variations.
This direction is not without its faults, but thats a topic for later. Stalking the Ghost begins with Into the Spiral, focusing on expediting the traditional rhythmic focus of doom metal, and acting as an ambassador of chaos to the rest of the album. Into the Spiral is a great summation of the albums thesis, portraying a newer and more varied sound without losing intensity.Clearly, some of the more exploratory notions that Unearthly Trance were working toward on their last album V have managed to find their way here, through means of maturation of course. Dream State Arsenal flirts with a punishing and traditional grinding buildup, thickly layered, trudging through twangy darkness. It works as an introduction to the concepts of doom or sludge, successfully portraying a sense of impending calamity that culminates in violent commiseration. Vocals here show surprising depth and variation, never smothering the instrumentation. There really arent enough good things to say about this track, especially concerning its rather abrupt and grim breakneck ending, a sort of sonic break thats become more noticeable in metal.
Tracks such as Scythe and Famine tend to work in tandem together to help define the core of the album. Scythe tends to surge and move along readily, relying on its dense impact to accentuate its placing after a track like Dream State Arsenal. The latter in this instance feels like Unearthly Trance at their grimmest, their most focused, producing a soundscape that isnt so much a wall or scaled-up sound, but instead a coffin of unified rhythmic percussion and gut-punching power chords. Famines roaring staccato rips and brief refrain only highlight the sonic maelstrom.
Yet a track like Lion Strength, for all its construction, doesnt quite fit the pattern structure set up by the first couple tracks. Its appropriately gritty and messy, heavy, all things youd expect from Unearthly Trance at this point, but its also somewhat derivative of earlier sounds. Invisible Butchery has some greater experimentation, relying on those all-too-familiar soundscape breaks to help shift the direction of the track and subvert listeners expectations. For a brief moment, you would be somewhat convinced that Unearthly Trance wanted Invisible Butchery to pursue a sort of nonlinear construction, with its seismic grooves and explosive nature often reversed, or even better absent, or delayed beyond its normal genre conventions. The Great Cauldron, meanwhile, wins out for length, but its appeal is limited. Compared to the relative brevity of the rest of the tracks, or at least the more focused and specifically built tracks, The Great Cauldron flows, but it feels just a bit too static at points. Its not boring, its just not engaging enough. Its a missed opportunity to make the most out of a longer period of time.
Curiously, the album ends with In the Forests Keep one of the most atmospheric tracks. Its manipulative in the same fashion as the best horror films are. We as listeners anticipate this gruesome explosion of sound, as a somber anxiety helps propel the track forward toward its conclusion. Spoiler alert: The payoff never comes. It just lingers over dissonant harmonies. This is shockingly effective, and shows a willingness to stay away from conventions. These expressions throughout the entirety of the album work extraordinarily well and are exemplified in such a simple moment as In the Forests Keeps ending.
Stalking the Ghost should not turn anyone away from looking for a snappier and minimized doom/sludge that attempts to truncate established genre tropes in hopes of delivering content quicker, or at least changing the way we perceive genre adherence. When it works, it truly shines, and when it does stumble, it never truly fails outright, it merely misses developing a style that effectively complements the rest of the album. In its entirety, this is a modernized doom and sludge metal work that briskly and effectively communicates its thesis. Unearthly Trance still has room to grow, and it will be fascinating to see what direction they take.

Paralysis patients achieve fastest typing yet with new brain-computer interface – The Brown Daily Herald
Posted: at 10:26 pm
Even simple communication is a constant struggle for paralyzed patients, but a collaborative project from BrainGate neurotechnology researchers, which included scientists from Brown, recently found a way for these patients to type at the fastest speeds achieved yet.
Imagined actions, such as moving a cursor across an on-screen keyboard and selecting a letter, have become a reality for paralyzed patients with the help of a brain-computer interface.
Researchers implanted a tiny array of 100 electrodes in the brain so only the top of a silver plug was visible outside the patients skull. These electrodes recorded the firing of certain cells inside the brain and sent the information through a series of wires and connectors to reach a decoder a computer system that interprets the information, said Leigh Hochberg 90, professor of engineering.
The most recent data from the ongoing research shows that typing assisted by brain-computer interfaces is approaching speeds that would be useful for the public, Hochberg said. For patients who cannot move or speak, even the ability to say yes or no is meaningful communication, he added.
The three subjects were able to type at 1.4 to 4.2 times the speeds previously achieved by paralysis patients using similar systems, according to the study. With the interface, one subject reached a typing speed of nearly eight words per minute. All three typed at rates above 3.5 words per minute, which would satisfy the majority of paralysis patients, wrote Chethan Pandarinath, postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University and lead author of the study, in an email to The Herald.
Though these typing speeds are the fastest yet, they remain painfully slow, said Elizabeth Tyler-Kabara, director of the Neural Enhancement Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh. Predictive typing systems, like those that complete your words and phrases as you text, might increase those speeds dramatically, she added.
Advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence could also enhance the interfaces, allowing for more natural control, Pandarinath wrote.
The interface is not yet a marketable device, said Paul Nuyujukian, director of the Brain Interfacing Laboratory at Stanford and co-author of the study. The interface needs to be able to work anywhere, without wires or a trained technician, he added.
Still, this increase in typing speed is a hugely significant increase, said Michael Boninger, vice chair for research at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Theres no doubt that this brain-computer interface work has the ability to be transformative.
Researchers in multiple locations across the country have engaged in human research with this implanted chip since around 2004, Hochberg said. More recently, the team developed algorithms for the decoder that allowed subjects to point and click on a screen, he added.
BrainGate researchers and other experts not involved with the project noted the studys reliance on the research participants. Through their generous feedback about the device, they allow scientists to help more people with paralysis in the future, Hochberg said.
The subjects are heroic, Nuyujukian said. All of medicine owes them a huge debt of gratitude.

Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA March 7, 2017 Stryker announced today that its AVAflex Balloon System has received FDA 510(k) clearance and is, for the first time, available with Strykers market-leading bone cements and implants and the AutoPlex Mixing and Delivery System.
Doctors who perform vertebral augmentations are committed to the health and wellness of their patients, and Stryker is committed to empowering those doctors to provide the best possible care, said Chad Ludwig, marketing director at Stryker Instruments. The AVAflex Balloon System enables doctors to achieve bipedicular results with a unipedicular approach to vertebral augmentation.
The AVAflex and AutoPlex systems are used in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures (VCF), which affect an estimated 750,000 Americans each year. VCF patients can suffer from extreme pain and are at an increased risk for serious health problems. Vertebral augmentation, including the use of a balloon system, has been shown to provide patients with significant pain relief and dramatically reduce mortality rates.,
The AVAflex curved balloon systems new 11-gauge size allows surgeons to achieve with one insertion and a smaller needle what had previously required two insertions, making procedures less invasive and potentially reducing the risk of patient trauma. Using a minimally invasive technique, physicians can successfully create a midline cavity for targeted cement placement by accessing one pedicle.
AVAflex is now available with Strykers bone cements and implants and the AutoPlex Mixer and Delivery System, an easy-to-use bone cement mixing and delivery system. The AutoPlex system provides consistent and thorough blending of components, helping eliminate human error and variability.
Stryker has furthered its mission of making health care better for physicians, hospital staff and patients with the addition of the AVAflex portfolio, which it acquired from Becton Dickinson in 2016. Stryker provides the most complete and least invasive portfolio of vertebral compression fracture treatment options.

Is JaCoby Jones gaining a foothold in Detroit Tigers’ CF battle? – Detroit Free Press

LAKELAND, Fla. --In a perfect world, JaCoby Jones would get more time in Triple-A.
In a perfect world, one of the Detroit Tigers centerfield competitors would have claimed an inside track to the vacant starting spot by now. In a perfect world, manager Brad Ausmus said with his trademark sarcasm this morning, the team would acquire superstar Mike Trout.
But the Tigers are no further along in identifying a front-runner for centerfield --not with Mikie Mahtook scuffling at the plate and Tyler Collins sidelined defensively. But Ausmus indicated that Jones isnt automatically going to get sent to the minor leagues for more marinating.
Asked about his overall impressions from the first two weeks of games, Ausmus singled out Jones.
Ive been impressed with JaCoby defensively, he said. He seems to have very good instincts out there. Theres not a lot of panic.
It was a revealing comment because of two prevailing thoughts in camp: that Jones is all but ticketed to Toledo to start the season and that the Tigers will favor whichever playerserves them best defensively.
Related:
Detroit Tigers play another spring stinker, 11-6, vs. Phillies
Tigers' Jose Iglesias (neck contusion) day-to-day after collision
To this point, Jones has been the most impressivein centerfield. Mahtook has made some nice plays. Collins has yet to play during a game. And the possibility of Anthony Gose becoming a factorshould not be discounted --he has the best defensive ability of them all.
I think you need to be able to defend with our centerfield, for sure, Ausmus said, speaking about Comerica Parks vast quarters. You wouldnt think we would need offense to be the priority, based on the other position players that we have playing on a regular basis.
Of course, Jones is the least experienced of the candidates. And the team is determined not to rush him -- or anyone --to the major leagues too soon.
I think, in a perfect world, (Jones) gets a little more time, Ausmus said. He doesnt want to hear that, Im sure, but in a perfect world, I think he could use more time. And then the other concern is, if you brought him up and it was a platoon situation, then, well, if hes only playing against lefties, are you stunting his growth even more?
Despite there being no definitive read on the centerfield situation, it points towarda platoon situation, probably Mahtook and Collins. Though Mahtook is 1-for-16 this spring, he has yet to face a left-handed pitcher. Though Collins still a few days away from playing the field --Ausmus hinted that that could come this weekend --the team has been impressed by his approach.
There remains a chance that the Tigers add another candidate --scuttlebutt from the scouts this spring has the team seeking help --but Ausmus said, right now, there isnt an impetus to go outside the organization.
We certainly havent made any decisions, Ausmus said. Quite frankly, I havent even narrowed it down at this point. Were just letting them play it out, let the guys get their at-bats.
The truth is, were not any closer. Thats the best answer I can give you.
