What is the fascination with space exploration? – Grand Valley Lanthorn

Posted: at 2:29 pm

By Jake Keeley | 3/1/17 11:23pm

There are many things that I do not understand, but I do not think I am alone when I say that I do not understand the fascination with space. Im sure if we surveyed elementary aged children, one of the most frequent occurring desired occupations would be an astronaut. Aside from a police officer, or a fireman, kids love astronauts. And I cant totally blame them, as I too enjoy spacecrafts. In fact I have designed and engineered over 100 spacecrafts using LEGOs alone.

And certainly I can remember emulating life without gravity as I was taking big, moon-bouncing strides just yesterday. However, I cant help but ask whats next? There are so many unanswered questions that even if we got an answer, Im not sure we would know what to do with it. Is there life other than us? If the answer is yes, how does that change what we do on a day-to-day basis? If the answer is somehow figured out to be a firm no, does that change our approach either?

NASA couldnt care less about what we think because they are moving. After a long hiatus of being in the news, NASA has found themselves in the headlines twice in the past week. Not only did they recently find seven potentially hospitable planets, the movie Hidden Figures, depicting the story of a team of African American women mathematicians who played a major role in the early US space program, was nominated for the best picture award.

Best picture is certainly no small feat, but seven planets is extraordinary. Not only was the finding monumental, the naming was revolutionary as well.

TRAPPIST-1 finally serves as a nod to rapper Future who not only has a mixtape called Astronaut Status, but has also dedicated an entire project to the one time ninth planet from our sun, only to be reclassified as a dwarf planet, Pluto. No, NASA cant convince me that TRAPPIST stands for The Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope, because no one in their right mind would believe that.

After spending what felt like too long roving the planet Mars with nothing really to show for it, it seems like TRAPPIST-1 presents a real opportunity with some genuine traction. NASA suggests that three of the seven planets are within the goldilocks zone, where the temperature is neither too hot to boil off water, or too cold to freeze it.

However, there is still much to be learned about any of the planets, and it is certainly much too soon to speculate on the prospect of life. The best thing about it is that it is essentially a win-win scenario, because even if we determine that the planets are uninhabitable, we have an entirely new set of planets whose aliens can potentially invade Earth in the next sci-fi thriller.

We can even derive an entirely new species based on the environment TRAPPIST-1 presents. Just think of the possibilities. I already have, and it basically culminates in a reboot of Predator, because unfortunately all Hollywood can do these days are remakes.

In leaking Futures new mixtape, NASA has again sparked our interest in the unknown. Whether it stems from our longstanding love affair with films such as E.T., Star Trek, Star Wars, and other sci-fi films, it is evident that regardless of our reasoning, our infatuation with space will continue into the future.

Annexation of Crimea beats space exploration as Russians’ proudest moment – StopFake.org

Posted: at 2:29 pm

Russians are prouder of the annexation of Crimea than they are of their nations achievements in space exploration, provided this years results of a Levada Center survey held annually since 1999.

In January 2017, victory in the Second World War (called the Great Patriotic War in Russia) retained its leading position as the proudest moment of the Russian people. This option was selected by 83 percent of respondents.

Second place with support from 43 percent of respondents was Russias annexation of Crimea. This item was introduced to the survey in 2017.Space exploration dropped downed to third place with 42 percent support from respondents. For comparison, space exploration garnered 60 percent support in 1999.

Further down in the rankings were Russian literature, industrialization during the Soviet era, the achievements of Russian scientific research, and the glory of Russian weapons.

When asked about what they are most ashamed of, most chose the option of a great nation, a rich country, but [one who people] live in eternal poverty and instability. In second place was the collapse of the USSR; in third place was callousness and rudeness.

Solange, Psychedelics and Head Bangers at Day 3 of Paris Fashion Week – Yahoo Movies (blog)

Posted: at 2:26 pm

Clare Waight Keller bid adieu to Chloe after six years on Thursday with a Fall 2017 collection that was a shining example of how successful she was at revitalizing the French fashion house.

All the elements of the brand were here, from boho to sweet romance to apres-surf, and so was style superstar Solange, sitting front row in a lacy white maxidress a few seats away from Oscar nominee Isabelle Huppert.

Chinese actress Tang Wei also caused a stir, followed up the steps of the Petit Palais by a phalanx of photographers and her own personal groomer.

On the runway, the collection was inspired by "an edgy dream world of psychedelic optimism," which translated into a retro, '60s brushed check double breasted coat, smocked blouses worn under pinafores, and sweet mini-dresses in starry lace or a groovy faces print. Haute fleece jackets, oversized faded stripe mohair sweaters and color-blocked warm-up suits in nylon or suede looked made for apres surf Malibu. (Although she's London-based, Keller is an L.A. fan and often vacations on the coast with her family.)

Keller has a knack for creating must-have accessories, and this season was no different; the looks called for T-strap Mary Janes with rounded toes or flat loafers, and spring's bracelet bag was updated in a larger, more rounded shape.

The designer always has upbeat music at her shows, with a preponderance of American rock 'n' roll, and she may have had the most perfect finale song ever for someone on her way out: Human League's "Don't You Want Me." Yes, we do, and we can't wait to see where you go next.

The big afternoon show was Balmain, held at the always lovely Hotel Potocki. It was a Kardashian-free zone in the front row, unlike last season, before the infamous robbery, when Kim, Kourtney and Kris Jenner were at the show to support Olivier Rousteing, the designer they helped make by wearing his super-sexy, skintight designs and promoting them on their social media channels. This season's celebrity eye candy was Nick Jonas, who took in the lengthy runway show like a champ, even if he did look like he could have used a disco nap as the number of looks topped 50. Zayn MalikandAnais Gallagher (daughter of Oasis' Noel Gallagher) were also in the front row.

The inspiration was oddly specific and broad at the same time: "Nirvana on a road trip through the Serengeti, the Far West and Amazonia," according to the show notes. The show did start with "Smells Like Teen Spirit," but that's where the grunge ended and the glam Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner fest began.

Really, the collection was about rock 'n' roll, which is where Balmain found its recent success, first under former design director Christophe Decarnin, who from 2006 to 2011 revived the brand first with heavily embellished (and uber expensive) jackets inspired by Michael Jackson's gold-braided, gold-buttoned military looks.

Back the rock n ' roll roots @Balmain #PFW pic.twitter.com/3jl5VeDkN2

- @Booth (@Booth) March 2, 2017

Rousteing, who took over after Decarnin, reached back to rock 'n' roll for this collection, which was beaded, fringed, studded and chain-embroidered to within an inch of its life. The workmanship was something to behold, and many of the looks will no doubt make it onto the red carpet. (Paris Jackson, daughter of Michael, wore Balmain at the 2017 Grammys.)

There was a Serengeti's worth of animal and cow prints on patchwork dresses, as well as easier knitwear pieces (high waist knit trousers and capes) which have been a through line for the past couple of seasons.

But what I liked most were the "so bad-they're good" T-shirts in airbrushed wolf prints, road-trip landscapes and more, worn under embellished jackets. Forget Nirvana, they were metal head cool.

Do Slot Machines Lull Gamblers into a Trance? – God is a Geek

Posted: at 2:25 pm

Playing slot machines is the most common form of gambling in the world. There are millions of active slot players that either play in one of the many online casinos or in brick and mortar establishments.

Slot machines can of course be played in casinos around the world, but theyre available in many more establishments too, including pubs, restaurants and airports. Billions are wagered annually on slot machines.

However, a recent research study by the Centre for Gambling Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) has shown that experienced slot machine players fall into a slot machine zone or lull.

How the Study was Performed

Researchers recruited two groups experienced slot players and UBC undergraduates. Both groups were required to play on a slot machine for 30 minutes in the UBC Casino lab on campus.

However, the slot machine was slightly modified. Panels were mounted to the slot machine on each side and these panels displayed moving shapes. Players were asked to push a button every time they noticed one of the white circles turning into a red square. Players also had their heart rates monitored during the 30-minute slot session.

At the end of the session, players were asked whether they lost track of time or not.

The study showed that the experienced group of slot players were more likely to miss a shape change and they were also more likely to report losing track of time. The researchers explained that the results support the hypothesis that being immersed while playing a slot machine results in a player losing focus on the world around them.

There are reasons why the majority of brick and mortar casinos have no windows or clocks. They want players to lose track of time and play games the entire night, but this leads to problem gambling.

You can read the full study and the results at the DailyMail.co.uk.

Tips for Avoiding the Slot Machine Zone

The #1 tip you should always make sure you follow is to take breaks. Some online casinos will even allow you to set-up a reminder to notify you every time youve played for X number of minutes (You can set how many minutes).

If the casino doesnt have this feature then you should make sure you remind yourself to take a break every hour or so to refocus. See how your session is going, refuel yourself and then continue playing once youre ready.

One feature every online slot has is the ability to set the machine to spin X amount of times (Often up to 100 spins). This feature should be avoided as its a lot easier to lose track of how long youve been playing.

Conclusion

Slot machine players are at a higher risk of becoming addicted to gambling than other gamblers. However, if you are careful about setting limits and avoiding extended sessions, youll have a better chance of avoiding the slot machine zone. When played in moderation, slots can offer great fun and entertainment.

Online slot developers try to make playing slots as sticky as possible to keep players playing. Some online slots today have storylines to follow, which makes them even more interactive, as players want to continue the story.

We regularly plays slots ourselves and enjoy playing them, but we also know the risks and wanted to share those with our readers too. To help limit your risk, ensure you take advantage of the great slot bonuses and promotions available.

TMS Announces 2017 Bladesmithing Competition Winners – Newswise (press release)

Posted: at 2:24 pm

Newswise March 1, 2017San Diego, CA (USA): A blade forged from a meteorite, a mythical Elven shortsword made real, and a reproduction of a Viking battle axe were among the 26 entries that competed in the 2017 TMS Bladesmithing Competition, held as part of the TMS 2017 Annual Meeting & Exhibition in San Diego, California, February 26March 2.

It was a sword produced in the style of a Norwegian langseax, however, that took home the inaugural TMS Wadsworth-Sherby Bladesmithing Grand Prize when the winners of the competition were announced on February 28. The sword was forged by a student team representing the South Dakota School of Mines, with steel smelted in a historic manner with local materials gathered from the Black Hills.

Now in its second year, the TMS Bladesmithing Competition challenges university teams across the globe to produce a knife or sword blade formed by hand hammering or trip hammer forging. The teams are also required to prepare a technical report on the science behind the creation of their entry, as well as a technical poster and a video. The entries are rigorously judged on technical excellence, safety, and aesthetics by a panel of scientists and engineers in the minerals, metals, and materials professions.

The TMS Wadsworth-Sherby Bladesmithing Grand Prize is sponsored by Battelle and was established by Battelle President and Chief Executive Officer, Jeffrey Wadsworth. The Prize consists of a $2,000 cash award for the team, a medal, and a commemorative volume of Wadsworth-Sherby Collected Works on Damascus Steels & Related Topics. Wadsworth presented the Grand Prize during the Bladesmithing Award ceremony, noting that he had intended for the award to honor his mentor and friend, Oleg D. Sherby, who had developed a seminal body of research with Wadsworth on Damascus steel and other ancient weapons.

In addition to the TMS Wadsworth-Sherby Grand Prize, TMS conferred second, third, and honorable mention place awards. The full list of 2017 TMS Bladesmithing Competition winners are as follows:

TMS Wadsworth-Sherby Grand Prize ($2,000 prize) South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

Second Place ($500 prize) Norwegian University of Science and Technology "Reproduction of the T19391 Sword from the Late Norwegian Iron Age"

Third Place ($250 prize) Colorado School of Mines "A Closer Shave: Forging a Damascus Steel Straight Razor"

Honorable Mention ($100 prize) California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo "A Rapier Eclectic"

Visit the TMS Bladesmithing Competition website for further information on the contest background and rules, as well as a list of the 2017 contestants. All student videos are also available for viewing.

PTC Therapeutics’ ataluren flunks late-stage CF study; shares slump 24% premarket – Seeking Alpha

Posted: at 2:22 pm

A Phase 3 clinical trial, ACT CF, assessing PTC Therapeutics' (NASDAQ:PTCT) ataluren (Translarna) in nonsense mutation cystic fibrosis (nmCF) failed to achieve its primary or secondary endpoints. We remain committed to patients receiving ataluren in other indications."

Translarnais a protein restoration therapy designed to enable the formation of a functioning protein in patients with nonsense mutation-caused genetic disorders. It is conditionally approved in Europe to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
