LAKELAND, Fla. Mikie Mahtook slid his wood bat abovehis locker in the Detroit Tigers clubhouse, into a small slot, barrel first, as if he were tucking away a family secret.
On the face of the barrel, near the end, the bat is engraved with the model number "54," the same number he scribbles on his cleats. It is a treasured number for his entire family, something thatappears almost daily, out of nowhere. It's a sight that prompts his twin sisters to proclaim: Today is going to be a good day!
That number reveals everything about Mahtook. It's pride and inspiration, and a way to carry his father, Michael, with him at all times.
It was my fathers football number, said Mahtook, who is competing with JaCoby Jones and Tyler Collins to be the Tigers starting centerfielder, the only real position battle on this team. I want to make him proud.
Michael, a former LSU linebacker, died of heart disease at age 32 while playing tennis when Mahtook was 4 years old.
I never felt like he was gone, if that makes any sense, said Mahtook, 27. Obviously, he was not there physically, but I feel like my mom and my uncles and friends and everybody who was close to me, kept him alive through stories.
To understand Mahtooks passion and why he plays baseball with such fierce determination and a linebacker's aggression and to appreciate how he ended up in this clubhouse after growing upwithout hisfather all you need is one story about his mother, Mary Ann Mahtook.
She's the strongest person he has ever met.

In 2010, Mary Ann was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. It was Mahtook's sophomore season at LSU,when he played in the NCAA tournament and for Team USA atWorld University Championships in Tokyo. He wanted to stop playing to be with her, but she wouldnt let him.
Shell never forget the tears in his eyes.
I told him, Please play ball, give me something to look forward to, Mary Ann told him. Ill Skype you. Ill watch all your games on the computer. For me, what Im asking of you, my love, is to play baseball. Play it hard. Thats what is going to get me through.
Play baseball. Play it hard.
Thats the mantra the Mahtooks used to get through everything. The loss of Michael. The battle against cancer. And everything between.
After a mastectomy and chemotherapy, Mary Ann lost her hair.
We so protected Mikie, she said. We sheltered him. We still shelter him a little bit. He didnt see half of what my girls saw, and that was planned.

Mahtooktalked to her on Skype, instead.
He wanted to see me, Mary Ann said. We were like, let me put my baseball cap on. Let me put some make-up on. Lets put the game face on. Lets put the game face on and we did it. We put the game face on. We were like, Woo hoo! We are great over here!
She laughs at the memory.
I just needed him to believe that I was going to be fine, she said. I dont know if I believed it, but I definitely made him believe it.
Put the game face on. Fight through it. Soldier on.
Almost seven years later, Mary Ann is cancer free.

And now, thisguy who plays baseball like his hair is on fire diving for balls, trying to run through walls is fighting for a job with the Tigers. He's outgoing, electric and confident. And he hasso many of the same mannerisms as his father.
Obviously, the opportunity is here, Mahtook said. To be able to go out here and compete, knowing Im fighting for a starting job, not just a roster spot or a bench role, thats huge. Its what everybody wants to do. Everybody dreams about.
Mahtook is like his dad, in just about everything.
His dad was just a great guy, a big, awesome, good-looking guy with a gentle soul, Mary Ann said. He could captivate a room, easy to converse with. He made everyone comfortable and Mikie has a lot of that.
Mahtook was a star on the football field, just like his father. He was an all-state quarterback atSt. Thomas More High School in Lafayette, La., but a "shattered" armended his junior season. Surgery was required.
That was devastating, Mary Ann said. I saw what an injury does.
It was his first major injury, and he struggled to come back and start playing baseball.
That was the first lesson to me," Mary Ann said, "what injuries do to you mentally."
But Mahtook was back to normal by his senior baseball season
It just takes a while, Mary Ann said.

Now flash forward.
Mahtook didn't suffer a major injury at LSU, where he established himself as one of the best players in program history. A 2011 first-team All-American, Mahtook had a.344 career batting averageand ranks second in school history in triples (12) and fifth in stolen bases (60).
He plays good defense, can run, very athletic, Tigers general manager Al Avila said during last month's Winter Caravan We like him a lot. We feel he is a high-energy, toolsy guy, who still has some upside. I know (LSU coach) Paul Mainieri very well from LSU. He told us that he is probably one of the most electric players hes ever had in his program. Ever. And hes had a lot of real good ones.
Mahtook was taken in the first round of the 2011 draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. In 2015, he played in 41 games for the Rays and showed all kinds of power, batting .295 with nine home runs in just 115 plate appearances.
But last season, he had a batch of injuries. Hisoblique kept him out3 weeks early in the year.
That was probably my biggest one, Mahtook said. I came back for three weeks and broke my hand, so I was out for another two months. Im not making excuses. Its the reality of what happened.
He struggled, hitting .195, and started to do things he had never done.
I did a lot of things that were uncharacteristic of me," Mahtook said. "Just trying to do too much, like trying to get eight hits in one at-bat."
To his mother, it was like watching him his junior year of high school baseball, when he was coming back from that broken arm.
You could see he was just off, she said. When I saw him struggling, I knew it was just going to take a while to get it back. You have to rehab, but you have to rehab your psyche. Its just a process. I think thats what happened to Mikie last year.
For years, she would call him after games, wanting to break down his at-bats or his plays in the field.
Id say, Mikie, I dont know if you are overthinking.
And hed be like, Uh, mom!
The Tigers traded for him during the off-season, knowing the talent wasthere to play defense in Comerica Park. The hope is that Mahtook will realize his potential and come back strong from those injuries, just like he did in high school.
Traded from Tampa Bay, the new Tiger is ready to compete for centerfielder's job. Video by Perry A. Farrell.
He might even win the starting job, orplatoon with Collins.
Either way, he's a guy to watch this spring.
I think this year is going to be a really good year, Mahtook said. I love the vibe here. Ive only been here a few days. Just the week or so that Ive been around here, the vibe is unreal. Everybody is super close. Everybody wants everybody to do super well. Theres no bad blood. Its a really, really good vibe.
Mary Ann is making plans, getting some Tigers gear and hopes to see him play on Opening Day, although she doesnt want to jinx anything.
She never remarried, Mahtook said. I think thats a testament to my dad, to what they meant to each other. Shes the best. Shes the strongest person I know. I am who I am because of her, because of what she has helped us overcome.
A single mom who raised two girls and a son who plays baseball like a linebacker.
Just like 54.

CF Industries (CF) Q4 Loss Wider than Expected, Sales Miss – Zacks.com
Posted: at 11:22 am
Fertilizer maker, CF Industries (CF - Free Report) swung to a loss of $320 million or $1.38 per share in the fourth quarter of 2016 from a profit of $27 million or 11 cents per share recorded a year ago. The results in the reported quarter include impairment charges of $134 million related to the companys investment in Point Lisas Nitrogen Limited.
Barring one-time items, adjusted loss came in at 39 cents per share for the quarter, versus earnings of 72 cents per share recorded a year ago. Loss per share was wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 6 cents.
Sales slipped roughly 22% year over year to $867 million in the quarter, and missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $905.6 million. Sales were hurt by reduced average selling prices across all segments. Excess nitrogen supply continued to weigh on prices in the quarter.
Segment Review
Sales for the Ammonia segment plunged roughly 44% year over year to $211 million in the reported quarter. Ammonia sales volumes fell 7% year over year to 762,000 tons, affected by unfavorable weather conditions and certain economic factors. Average selling prices declined 40% to $277 per ton owing to excess global nitrogen supply.
Sales for the Granular Urea segment dipped roughly 3% year over year to $189 million. Sales volumes jumped 25% year over year to 883,000 tons, driven by additional volume available for sale from the company's Donaldsonville Nitrogen Complex. Average selling prices for granular urea declined 22% to $214 per ton owing to elevated global nitrogen supply.
Sales in the UAN (urea ammonium nitrate solution) segment dropped 17% year over year to $305 million. UAN sales volume jumped 28% to 2,047,000 in the quarter due to additional volume available for sale from the Donaldsonville plant. Average selling prices went down 35% to $149 per ton, hurt by elevated global nitrogen supply.
Sales in the AN (ammonium nitrate) segment fell 19% year over year to $93 million. Sales volumes rose 9% to 541,000 tons on higher volumes across North America and the U.K. Average selling prices dropped 26% to $172 per ton on excess nitrogen supply.
The Other segments sales rose around 9% year over year to $69 million. Sales volumes were 24% higher in the reported quarter at 450,000 tons. Average selling price decreased 13% to $153 per ton due to high levels of global nitrogen supply.
Financials
CF Industries cash and cash equivalents were $1,164 million at the end of 2016, a four-fold year over year rise. Long-term debt was $5,778 million, up around 4% year over year. Outlook
CF Industries sees demand for nitrogen in North America to be relatively unchanged on a year over year basis in 2017. The company envisions 89.5 million acres of corn to be planted and less than 50 million acres of wheat to be planted in the U.S. this year. In Canada, reduced grain planting is expected to be more than offset by higher canola plantings. As such, the company sees total nitrogen fertilizer demand in North America to be roughly 16 million nutrient tons for 2017.
CF Industries anticipates nitrogen prices to continue to improve in North America during the first half of 2017. However, an uncertain pricing environment is expected during the second half as additional nitrogen capacity comes online globally including a considerable increase in North America.
For 2017, the company expects new capital expenditures in the band of around $400 to $450 million for sustaining and other operations.
Price Performance
CF Industries has outperformed the Zacks categorized Fertilizers industry in the past three months, aided by its efforts to boost production capacity. The companys shares have gained around 27.2% over this period, compared with roughly 16.4% gain recorded by the industry.
Zacks Rank & Key Picks
CF Industries currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
Better-ranked companies in the basic materials space include Methanex Corporation (MEOH - Free Report) , Albemarle Corporation (ALB - Free Report) and The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (SMG - Free Report) .

Kansas City Royals: Yost Plans To Use Alex Gordon In CF – Call to the Pen

Los Angeles Dodgers Sell Darin Rufs Contract to a KBO Team by Greg Goldstein
Nick Swisher Announces Retirement, Move to FOX Sports by Tim Haberin
During the Royals first full-squad workout at their spring training facility in Surprise, AZ, Ned Yost informed reporters that the team was going tobe experimental and open minded with their outfield this spring.
The second overall pick in 2005, Alex Gordon has had an unusual career path. Gordon started his career as a third baseman, but was unable to hit well enough to stick at the position. In 2011 the Royals made him a full-time left fielder, a move that has paid enormous dividends. From 2011-2014, Gordon won 4 straight Gold Gloves. His 87 Defensive Runs Saved rankfirst among outfielders in that stretch, as do his 60.4 Ultimate Zone Rating and 35.9 Arm rating.
Most first round picks (that are position players) provide value with their bat. Gordon, on the other hand, has been stronger with the glove throughout his career. His career 110 wRC+ranks 87thsince his debut in 2007. On the flip side of things, Gordons 99 DRS (including his time at 3B) places 3rd in that span. While hes had some strong offensive seasons, Gordon has long been considered a glove-first player.
Now it appears the Royals will try and move Gordon around some more. The departure of Jarrod Dyson, alongwith the arrivals of Brandon Moss and Jorge Soler, leavestheRoyals defensively weakened. Dyson is regarded as a very good defender in the outfield, while both Moss and Soler are average at best. As Yost explained, the team is relying on Gordons versatility to save the Royals outfield defense:
This might have been a good idea if Gordon were still in his 20s, but players practicallynever shift to amore demanding position once they reach their 30s. Now 33 years old, Gordon haslost a step defensively in the past two seasons. His 15.7 UZR since2015 ranks 9th, which isnt so bad. However hisArm rating of 2.3 (22nd) and 11 DRS (18th) clearly display that Gordon isnt the same outfielder he used to be. In factGordons teammate, CF Lorenzo Cain, has rated as a better defender according to DRS and UZRsince becoming an everyday player. Therefore its highly unlikely that this will be anything more than a spring training experiment.

Ferguson Political Correctness – The Missourian
Posted: at 11:21 am
Ferguson is still in the news. Its a political correctness issue now and its amazing how long the reach is of out-of-control sensitivity.
Ferguson officials are being criticized for using a Humvee in a police program to educate children about the dangers of drugs. Residents told the city council that using a Humvee for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program is insensitive. Police vehicles, including Humvees, were used to restore peace during the protests over the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in 2014.
The police chief said the Humvee was chosen because it is an attention-grabber. Good idea, we say.
Should police be banned in Ferguson because they are a reminder of the shooting incident?
Then another concern in Ferguson is about the name of the DARE mascot, called Daren the Lion. The officer who shot Brown was Darren Wilson, who resigned over the shooting death. He was cleared of any wrongdoing. Police Commander Frank McCall says the name is used nationally and has no connection to the shooting.
Whats next? Change the name of Ferguson because the name is a reminder of the protests that occurred after the shooting?

Trevor Phillips: ‘Political correctness ushered in the populist wave’ – The Guardian
Posted: at 11:21 am
A former president of the National Union of Students and chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Trevor Phillips was once a leading member of what might be called the metropolitan liberal elite. He had the ear of everyone who mattered in the Labour party, and on matters of race and equality he was the go-to guy.
But then he began to have doubts about many of the political positions he held and started confronting what he saw as right-on shibboleths. Pretty soon he was being denounced as a turncoat in the same terms that he had once denounced others. In recent years, he has made several documentaries, with attention-grabbing titles such as Things We Wont Say About Race That Are True, that have aimed to challenge received wisdoms. The latest, which sounds like a homage to a Daily Telegraph letters page correspondent, is entitled Has Political Correctness Gone Mad?
I meet Phillips at his production office in Kentish Town, north London. Now 63, with greying hair and a slight stoop, hes no longer the youthfully strutting figure who seemed to be everywhere in the 1990s. But as soon as he gets talking, the eyes light up and the old passion comes pouring out.
Political correctness is one of those terms that mean different things to different people. What does it mean to him? The title is not mine, he says, a little defensively. Its a Channel 4 title. I do not normally ever use the term political correctness, except with a heavy dose of doubt about its usefulness, because basically it has become a stick with which the right beats everyone else.
In fact Phillips has used the term before. Two years ago he wrote in the Daily Mail and Sunday Times of po-faced political correctness that cramps all conventional parties. Still, his thesis in the film is that by trying to corral political debate into a tightly policed acceptability, the political establishment has created the conditions for insurgent figures such as Nigel Farage, Jeremy Corbyn and Donald Trump.
Its a perfectly reasonable argument but the programme is a little too wide-ranging in its targets to make its case. It jumps from the anti-Islamic group Pegida to censorious transgender activists to social media trolls to students banning sombreros. Although worthy subjects for investigation, they dont quite gel as an explanation for the rise of Corbyn, let alone Trump.
But what they do point to is Phillipss increasing frustration with the conviction that if we can only control the expression of ideas, we will all be able to live together in peace and harmony. October 2000 saw the publication of a report commissioned by Phillips, then chair of the Runnymede Trust, called The Future of Multi-Ethnic Britain. It marked perhaps the high-water mark of multicultural thinking, and suggested that Britain should become a community of communities in which each community would respect the other by avoiding causing offence.
Well I think it would be fair to say that I made a big mistake, he says now. It was a clear statement that some groups can play by their own rules. That to me runs counter to my own political beliefs. Why I am still a supporter of the Labour party is because I believe fundamentally in solidarity and reciprocity, and I think most on the left have forgotten both of those things.
Four years after that report, Phillips wrote an article in which he compared a critique by David Goodhart of multiculturalism to the jottings from the BNP leaders weblog. Two months later, he suddenly announced the end of multiculturalism and called for a core of Britishness to be asserted. Not long afterwards, Ken Livingstone suggested that Phillips had swung so far to the right that he would soon be joining the BNP.
Goodhart and Phillips are now good friends. I think Trevor has been intellectually and morally brave, says Goodhart. He took a lot of flak for looking past the cliches of the anti-racist left. He is regarded as a curious Uncle Tom figure by a lot of the black and ethnic minority establishment. Trevor still thinks of himself as a somewhat sceptical member of the left family and at times has, I think, felt quite wounded by the attacks.
I ask Phillips if the threat of expulsion from his political tribe does act as a disincentive to speak out about what he really thinks.
Depends how much of your life you want to spend lying to yourself, he says. I think its pretty wearying to get up each day and tell yourself to go advocate for something that you know not to be true. And what is even worse is if youre in public office or politics and everyone youre telling this to also knows it isnt true. Not only are you a liar, youre also an idiot.
If, as Goodhart says, he has been wounded by his ostracising, he doesnt appear to nurture any regrets. I have lost lots and lots of friends. My view is if you cant tolerate that I want to have this discussion, then we cant really be friends. What youre asking me to do is collude in a lie with you rather than argue it out. A big part of it is that on the left, if you look like me, youre supposed to think in a particular way. And they just hate it if a black person isnt the person they want him to be.
He believes that we all have to get used to and get over being offended. I dont care about offending people, he says. And I dont really care about being offended. There are quite a lot of people I actually want to offend. And I want to offend them all the time. But if somebody stands on the other side of the street and shouts nigger at me Im not going to be thrilled, but Im not going to argue for him to get locked up.
Then why was he appalled at what he saw as antisemitic bigotry in the Labour party? Surely by his own reckoning, he shouldnt much care. Oh the problem with that, he says, is not that people were using the word Zion, but that people were making it impossible for Jewish students to have meetings. There is an important distinction between words and actions.
But his complaints were not just about actions, I suggest. Was he not also concerned that the Labour party had played down antisemitic attitudes by some of its members? Yes, he agrees. There are people who believe there is no real distinction between Jews, Zionists and Israelis. And the party doesnt want to get into that at all because, lets be frank, its increasingly dependent on a demographic group Muslims within which a sizable minority subscribes to that view.
Phillips studied chemistry at Imperial College, London, and, he says, its his science training that made him change his mind about how race was discussed in this country. By the turn of the millennium, he says, it was obvious that it made little sense to classify people as black, brown and white. He has little time for designations such as BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic).
If you look at Indians and Pakistanis, they have completely different life chances. Its the same with Afro-Caribbeans and West Africans. Im not clever enough to have a Damascene conversion. I just look at the numbers and if they clash with how I think the world should be working, Ive got to change the picture.
Fair enough, but his critics will say that Phillips is making straw man arguments. After all, who is stopping him from saying what he wants? Hes got a TV documentary and coverage in national newspapers. Where is this politically correct establishment thats trying to stifle him?
A ruling elite maintains an idea of whats good and reasonable by a whole series of methods, he counters. Who gets advancement, rewards and status? If you dont hold to the orthodoxy, you stop being invited to meetings. Theres a phrase that people in centre-left politics use: oh hes very good. What they actually mean is: I agree with him.
Phillips has grown used to people not agreeing with him. Perhaps a little too used to it. As one old comrade says: He cant resist tweaking the nose of the bien pensant.
But in these disagreeable times, dissenting voices will make themselves heard. The liberal consensus has broken down, and rehashing the old pieties wont put it back together again. Whether or not he receives an invitation, Phillips is determined to have his say.

One of the big buzzwords this past year has been political correctness.
This is the obsessive fear that all our language and actions are going to be policed so no ones precious feelings are ever hurt. Accusations of political correctness are automatic conversation-killers because no one wants to be accused of it. Its synonymous with the thought police. But theres a dirty secret to being politically correct: everyone is guilty of it in some way.
Most often, the charge of political correctness is leveled against leftists and liberals, who can be quick to accuse others of sexism or racism. Theyve been nicknamed snowflakes because theyre supposedly unique and fragile.
And sure, not every accusation is accurate. Ive even seen far too extreme cases of university students demanding college curricula be altered to avoid anything potentially offensive, which isnt fair. College is supposed to challenge you and present uncomfortable ideas, but is there anything wrong with telling students the controversial material to let the student drop the class if they dont want to hear it? Challenging, even offensivematerial should be presented, but students should be able to make an informed decision about it.
Much of this political correctness has had positive effects. By encouraging more diversity and greater awareness, it has allowed for better representation of women and minorities and opened larger debates about race, gender and other societal divisions.
But people on the right can be politically correct, too. Its just that they have different values, so they are protective of a different set of beliefs. For example, I have seen people complain about my column and say some of what I write is offensive. Well, isnt atheism politically incorrect? Arent I expressing an unpopular idea?
Or consider Colin Kaepernicks protest by kneeling during the anthem instead of standing. For many people on the right, this was hugely offensive. Kaepernick was doing something immensely politically incorrect. Or how so many people on the right complained when people wanted to remove the Confederate flag, despite its origins in the slaveholding South. Should their feelings be considered when they claim others feelings should be dismissed?
There is a double standard here. The people who most often denounce political correctness often seem to be unable to handle it when that incorrectness is aimed against their values. So it isnt a concern about correctness as much as silencing the opposition.
Now, you can say that the left is trying the same thing, but I think theres a crucial distinction in play. History is often the struggle between dominant and minority groups, with the dominant group being the one that determines what is socially acceptable. However, a free society requires the ability for all voices to have a chance to be heard. If cries of political correctness are used to continue to silence people who historically have been silenced, then we should be skeptical.
We also have a First Amendment, which says we have the freedom to say what we want without penalty. Only under very extreme circumstances is speech prohibited, but this says nothing about other peoples reactions. They have the right to complain, protest and condemn. We have to balance having freedom of speech both ways, while at the same time being vigilant in watching which groups that speech is being used to oppress.

‘Father of eugenics’ should not be erased from academic history – Times Higher Education (THE) (blog)
Posted: at 11:21 am
Those statues and portraits that embellish our high seats of learning enjoy them while you can. As Sir Francis Galton, one of the greatest polymaths in British history, is recast by some University College London activists as the inventor of racism, we must ask: is any famous figure safe from the campus commissars of moral rectitude?
Today, Galton is best known as the father of eugenics, to the neglect of his far broader range of contributions to knowledge of humankind. He is ridiculed for his doctrine that nothing is beyond understanding through the scientific method of objective, quantitative measurement. Yet this approach elevated the erstwhile philosophical musings of psychology and sociology to credible empirical disciplines.
The eponymous statistical tests of his disciple Karl Pearson remain essential tools of empirical research. Strongly influenced by the evolutionary theory of his cousin Charles Darwin, Galton was passionate about the possibilities of improving the human race by manipulating the laws of natural selection.
We must always consider the social context of scientists and their theories: in the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution, imperial Britain was embarrassed by the apparent decline in physique and social attributes among the working class. Army recruiting sergeants saw before them a pale shadow of the sturdy agricultural labourers of Wellingtons time: certainly the arduous industry of Coke Town produced men of muscle, but others were gaunt weaklings or hapless dullards. Impoverished conditions were seen not as cause but effect.
The consensus of the fin-de-sicle intelligentsia was that something needed to be done. With higher birth rates in the lowest strata, the elite feared its decay, and subversion of biological laws by survival of the weakest. Eugenics, a term coined by Galton, was the scientific pursuit of improving the human stock. Among membership of the Eugenics Society were John Maynard Keynes, George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, Cyril Burt, Julian Huxley and most of British psychiatry.
Christians accused eugenicists of playing God, but there were also Anglican supporters.
Galton is vilified by UCL activists for his views of racial inferiorities. However, authoritative biographer Nicholas Wright Gillham is in no doubt that he would have been appalled by distortions of hereditary theory long after his death. Meanwhile, many other celebrated scientific, political and cultural names are untarnished by their support for the cause. Marie Stopes, a perennial role model on the BBC Radio series Womans Hour, urged sterilisation of the poor, yet this escapes the notice of leftward leaning liberals.
The chattering class, on its high moral ground, should be reminded that eugenics has never gone away: the brutally enforced one-child policy in China, and in the West abortion for a lengthening list of undesirable conditions such as Downs syndrome and cleft palate. Do the students who castigate Galton oppose genetic design, or assisted suicide?
People of the past were not perfect, and they cannot keep up with the whims of contemporary ideology. The lecture theatre named after Galton at UCL, his laboratory and bust, honour his seminal achievements. It would be intellectual and cultural vandalism to remove his name, but sadly this is part of a broader trend in universities.
Many scholars will be well aware of the censorial and airbrushing tendencies of radical students, and administrators often appear spineless in defending their greatest alumni. We expect students to be idealists and to challenge the status quo, but if their zeal for an unblemished gallery is appeased, universities will be left with only the bland and the boring.
Revisionism is manipulation of history to suit present sensitivities. If honourable men and women are to be punished for any utterance or belief at odds with modern norms, we will live perpetually in year zero.
Niall McCrae is a lecturer at the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at Kings College London. Roger Watson is professor of nursing at the University of Hull.

Pokemon Go: these new Evolution items are obtained at PokeStops but the drop rate’s all over the place – VG247

Saturday, 18 February 2017 22:07 GMT By Stephany Nunneley
The large Pokemon GO update this week not only brought with it 80 new monsters and customization options, but new Evolution Items as well. Apparently, they are also rather rare.
According to Nintendo Life, the new Evolution Items in Pokemon Go can be obtained at PokeStops, and currently there are five stone types:
These Evolution items are used to evolve the aforementioned Gen 1 Pokemon into Gen 2 creatures. However, the drop rate for the Evolution times seems to vary, hugely.
Over on reddit, some users report going to multiple PokeStops without obtaining a single Evolution item. One user said they spun over 250 times and went home empty handed, while another obtained one on their first PokeStop spin.
Along with Evolution items, there are two new berries at PokeStops which help players entice Pokemon: Nanab and Pinap.
The former slows the Pokemon down to make it easier to catch, while the latter doubles the candy handed over upon being caught. The drop rate on these berries is said to be much higher than the Evolution items.
In other words, keep trying and use those berries. Its unknown if this intended programming on Niantics part, or if there is a balancing issue.
But at this point, its basically like rolling for loot in D&D: some have better luck than others.

How Vedic Philosophy Influenced Nikola Tesla’s Idea of ‘Free Energy’ – Collective Evolution
Posted: at 11:20 am
We're creating a positive news network. We need your help.
*This is an older article that originates from Collective Evolution, a couple of updates have been made.
Science works best when in harmony with nature. If we put these two together, we can discover great technologies that can only come about when the consciousness of the planet is ready to embrace them. One example is free energy, also known as zero-point energy, which utilizes the substance that exists all around us and converts it into usable energy. This would give us a limitless source of energy, and would practically wipe out all poverty on the planet. (more on this later in the article)
The properties of space have been postulated by many, from ancient Vedic philosophy, Eastern Mystics, various ancient civilizations throughout human history all the way to Descartes, Einstein, Newton and more. Humans are curious beings, and our quest to discover what is will never end.
And they allowed Apollonius to ask questions; and he asked them of what they thought the cosmos was composed; butthey replied; Of elements. Are there then four? he asked. Not four, said Larchas, but five. And how can there be afifth, said Apollonius, alongside of water and air and earth and fire? There is the ether, replied the other, which we must regard as the stuff of which gods are made; for just as all mortal creatures inhale thewire, so do immortal and divine natures inhale the ether. Am I,said Appollonius, to regard the universe as a living creature? Yes,said the other. The Life of Apollonius of Tyana, Philostratus, 220AD (source)
Science now knows that a material universe as the foundation of what we perceive to be our physical material world isnt quite the case. Today, physicists recognize that physical atoms are actually made up of vortices of energy that are constantly spinning and vibrating. At its smallest observable level, matter is energy, and this energy that exists all around us can be tapped into and possibly used to generate power.
Quantum physics has left many scientists baffled, again, the discovery that our physical material reality isnt really physical at all can be quite confusing. Scientists began to explore the relationship between energy and the structure of matter at the turn of the 19th century, this is approximately the time when the idea of a Newtonian material universe was dropped from the heart of scientific knowing, and replaced by the fact that matter is nothing but an illusion, that everything in the universe is made out of energy.
If quantum mechanics hasnt profoundly shocked you, you havent understood it yet. Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real. Niels Bohr, a Danish Physicist
Again, if you observed the composition of an atom with a microscope, you would see a small, invisible tornado like vortex, with a number of infinitely small energy vortices called quarks and photons. These are what make up the structure of the atom. As you focused in closer and closer on the structure of the atom, you would see nothing, you would observe a physical void. The atom has no physical structure, we have no physical structure, physical things really dont have any physical structure. Atoms are made out of invisible energy, not tangible matter.
Despite theunrivalled empirical success of quantum theory, the very suggestion that it may be literally true as a description of nature is still greeted with cynicism, incomprehension and even anger.(T. Folger, Quantum Shmantum; Discover 22:37-43, 2001)
Get over it, and accept the inarguable conclusion. The universe is immaterial-mental and spiritual. R.C. Henry, Professor of physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University. (source)
Weve seen a very interesting trend (especially within the past decade) of modern-day science catching up to an ancient understanding about the true nature of reality, its make-up, how it functions and how we can work with it to bring about change on our planet. For anybody to label the merging of spirituality and science as pseudoscience means they have not properly investigated it. Spiritual concepts of our ancient world are directly intertwined with modern-day science, more so quantum physics, and Nikola Tesla was well aware of this.
All perceptible matter comes from a primarysubstance, or tenuity beyond conception, filling all space, theakasha or luminiferousether, which is acted upon by the lifegiving Prana orcreative force, calling into existence, in never-ending cycles all things and phenomena. Nikola Tesla, Mans Greatest Achievement, 1907 (1)(2)
As you can see, Tesla was aware of ancient concepts and the correlation it had with the science he was working on -using sanskrit worlds like akasha, and prana to describe the force and matter that exists all around us. These words come from the Upanishads (a collection of Vedic texts)
The aakaash is not destructible, it is the primordial absolute substratum that creates cosmic matter and hence the properties of aakaash are not found in the material properties that are in a sense relative. The aakaash is the eternally existent, superfluid reality, for which creation and destruction are inapplicable. (Idham thadhakshare parame vyoman. Parame vyoman) Paramahamsa Tewari, Engineer, Physicist and Inventor. (source)
Nikola Tesla had correlations with Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), who was one of the most famous and influential spiritual leaders of the philosophies of Vedanta (one of the six schools of Hindu philosophy, the term originally referred to the upanishads, a collection of philosophical texts in Hinduism) and Yoga. He was the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and the founder of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. He is a giant figure in the history of the hindu reform movements.
Vivekananda wrote a later to Tesla in the late 1800s stating:
Mr. Tesla thinks he can demonstrate mathematically that force and matter are reducible to potential energy. I am to go and see him next week to get this new mathematical demonstration. In that case the Vedantic cosmology will be placed on the surest of foundations. I am working a good deal now upon the cosmology and eschatology of the Vedanta. I clearly see their perfect union with modern science, and the elucidation of the one will be followed by that of the other. Swami Vivekananda (Complete Works, VOL. V, Fifth Edition, 1347, p. 77). (1)
Tesla began using the Sanskrit words after meeting with Swami, and after studying the Eastern view of the true nature of reality, about the mechanisms that drive the material world. Eventually, it led him to the basis for the wireless transmission of electrical power, what is known as the Tesla Coil Transformer. During this year he made the following comments during a speech before the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. (Given before he familiarized himself with the the Vedic sincere of the easter nations of India, Tibet, and Nepal.)
Ere many generations pass, our machinery will be driven by a power obtainable at any point in the universe. This idea is not novelWe find it in the delightful myth of Antheus, who derives power from the earth; we find it among subtle speculations of one of your splendid mathematicians.Throughout space there is energy. Is this energy static, or kinetic? If static our hopes are in vain; if kinetic and this we know it is, for certain then it is a mere question of time when men will succeed in attaching their machinery to the verywheel work of nature. Nikola Tesla (source)
The Vedas are a group of writings that consist of hymns, prayers, myths, historical accounting, science and the nature of reality. They date back at least 5000 years, and are not so different from other ancient texts that dive into the same matters from all across the globe. The language used is Sanskrit and its origins are unknown.
Swami Vivekananda was hopeful that Tesla would be able to show that what we call matter is simply potential energybecause that wouldreconcile the teachings of the Vedas with modern science. The Swami realized that in that case, the Vedantic cosmology (would) be placed onthe surest of foundations. Tesla understood the Sanskrit terminology and philosophy and found that it was a good means to describe the physical mechanisms of theuniverse as seen through his eyes. It would behoove those who would attempt to understand the science behind the inventions of Nikola Tesla to study Sanskrit and Vedic philosophy. Toby Grotz, President, Wireless Engineering (source)
Apparently, Tesla was unable to show the identity of energy and matter, this did not come until Albert Einstein published his paper on relativity, which was known in the East for the last 5000 years.
All the powers in the universe are already ours. It is we who have put our hands before our eyes and cry that it is dark. Swami Vivekananda
Teslas vision of the wireless transmission of electricity and free energy has been postponed for almost one hundred years now. Which brings us to our next topic.
These concepts have been proven in hundreds oflaboratories throughout the world and yet they have not really seen the light of day. If thesetechnologies were to be set free worldwide, the change would be profound, it would be applicable everywhere. These technologies are absolutely the most important thing that havehappened in the history of the world. Brian Oleary, Former NASA Astronaut and Princeton Physics Professor. (source)
Here is a video of world renowned Physicist Harold E. Puthoff. An American physicist who earned his Ph.D from Stanford University. I am best familiar with his work through the declassification of the remote viewing program conducted by the CIA and NSA in conjunction with Stanford University. (source 1)(source 2)(source 3). He is the director of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Austin, and has served various government agencies throughout his years.
These are not just fringe scientists with science fiction ideas. They are mainstream ideas being published in mainstream physics journals and being taken seriously by mainstream military and NASA type funders. Ive been taken out on aircraft carriers by the Navy and shown what it is we have toreplace if we have new energy sources to provide new fuel methods. Dr. Harold E. Puthoff
Back in about 1964 a researcher at the Hughes Laboratory by the name of Robert L. Forward showed that there was a particular effect, called the Casimir Effect, which demonstrated that this energy could betaped. Dr. Harold E. Puthoff
This is what Tesla was talking about when he said that man would attach their machinery to the very wheel work of nature.

Our current methods for extracting energy are destroying Earth. Its destroying the environment, its people and creates conflict. We are rapidly approaching a time (if not already in that time) where we need to implement systems to eliminate the use of fossil fuels.
