Artificial Intelligence Challenge: These are the finalists for the 2021 KUKA Innovation Award – MarketScale

Innovations centered on the megatrend of artificial intelligence (AI): the finalists for the 2021 KUKA Innovation Award have been selected. Five teams convinced the international jury with their robotics concepts on the topic of AI. A monetary prize of 20,000 euro awaits the winner.

AI is becoming increasingly important for industry and the combination with robotics, in particular, is opening up completely new possibilities and applications.

An international jury of experts evaluated the concepts for the Artificial Intelligence Challenge and selected five finalists. The teams are provided with a KUKA robot free of charge and are being trained and coached by KUKA experts throughout the competition. The five finalist teams now have until the virtual Hannover Messe in April to implement their ideas. They will present their applications to a large specialist audience at the international industrial trade fair before the jury chooses the winner of the renowned competition during the fair.

Implicit knowledge instead of complex programming codes: the goal of the team from theBrandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenbergis intelligent robot programming based on manual manufacturing sequences. The individual process steps are recorded by means of innovative data gloves and reproduced on the industrial robot using an AI-based self-learning system. The operator is freed from the need to formulate explicitly what the task is and how the robot has to perform it. Instead, the implicit knowledge of the operator during the manual manufacturing process is accessed. A corresponding skill sequence is automatically generated with this information, and the robot carries out its task without the need to write a single line of code.

Humans can often easily explore closed spaces with their hands and pick up objects without even looking. The application by the international team of researchers fromthe Indian Institute of Science and the U.S. Massachusetts Institute of Technologyaims to bring such capabilities to robots. The goal is for robots to explore, recognize and pick up objects in vision-denied environments using the sense of touch. To this end, the BlindGrasp team is designing a novel gripper with tactile sensing capabilities that gathers the contact and proximity information. This data, coupled with the force-sensing capabilities of KUKAs lightweight robot LBR iiwa, is used by a machine learning agent to learn motion policies and thus safely explore the environment and pick up objects.

The goal of Chorrobot fromBelgiums Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Flanders Make@KU Leuvenis to leverage artificial intelligence in order to enhance the productivity of car manufacturers as well as small and medium-sized enterprises by facilitating and expediting the deployment of bimanual robot manipulation tasks. The concept enables users without extensive expertise in robotics to demonstrate some aspects of the task and to intuitively specify other aspects via a graphical user interface. This approach facilitates the commissioning of challenging bimanual tasks including fixtureless assembly operations that involve non-rigid and non-fixed elements as well as bimanual inspection operations in unstructured environments.

Particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, collaborative robots could help to reduce human-to-human interaction. However, configuring these machines for a set of given tasks still requires a great effort. The team from theA*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research in Singaporeis developing a programming-free approach that leverages the latest developments in AI capabilities. The technology enables more natural and safer human-robot collaboration. This allows the robot to support operators, especially in a high-mix low-volume manufacturing environment. European Project Using Artificial Intelligence to Improve ALS Care – ALS News Today

A new project run by a consortium of European institutions aims to improve the care of people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple sclerosis (MS) through targeted use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Called BRAINTEASER,the four-year study will monitor some 300 participants using various wearable sensors and digital apps. Data collected aims to help clinicians better detect, predict, and manage their patients disease progression.

Through a simple system of wearable sensors and apps we intend to bring the advantages of artificial intelligence directly to the patient, by integrating models for short and long-term risk prediction, clinical decision aid and prevention, Barbara Di Camillo, PhD, BRAINTEASERs scientific and technical manager, said in a press release.

Patients taking part will be monitored at four clinical centers in Italy, Spain and Portugal.

People with ALS and MS live with considerable uncertainty, regarding when to expect acute episodes of their respective disorders. This translates into alternating between hospital and home, placing a heavy psychological and economic burden on both the patients and their caregivers.

At the same time, doctors need better tools to help them manage their patients treatment more efficiently and effectively, such as by predicting disease progression, and personalizing therapies to better fit each patients needs.

BRAINTEASER which stands for BRinging Artificial INTelligencE home for a better cAre of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and multiple SclERosis will integrate the personal data gathered from patients with large clinical datasets. These combined data will be analyzed using AI methods to achieve five key goals.

They are, first, to better describe the mechanisms behind ALS and MS; second, to classify patients according to the particular way their condition evolves; third, to predict disease progression in a timely manner; fourth, to investigate the role that environmental factors play in these disorders; and finally, to suggest interventions that can delay disease progression.

The Universidad Politcnica de Madrid leads the program, with the support of 10 other members from six European countries and representing academia, industry, and medical and non-profit sectors. The European Unions Horizon 2020 program funds the program, with an overall budget of 5.9 million (about $7 million).

Although BRAINTEASER officially launched on Jan. 1, it started operating after a partners meeting on Jan. 28 and 29. During that meeting, the partners worked to streamline their initial action plan and to agree on their roles, responsibilities, and the most effective strategies to pursue.

The BRAINTEASER team hopes that by contributing to healthcare becoming more proactive than reactive, people may live healthier and more fulfilling lives for as long as possible.

Artificial intelligence technologies are often accused of taking away jobs. But how much does the perception hold up in reality? In a new study, Daron Acemoglu of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his peers have found that AI has indeed changed the skill profile of jobs, but its aggregate impact on employment is too little to detect.

The study analyses the impact of AI on jobs in the US labour market using job vacancy data from 2007 and 2010-18. The data is sourced from Burning Glass Technologies, a company that specializes in job market analytics.

The study finds a significant rise in the number of jobs that require AI skills, particularly after 2014 and mainly in industries that use AI technologies. The job descriptions for these vacancies show that companies that could accommodate AI stopped looking for workers with certain skills that they used to look for earlier.

At the same time, these firms started listing jobs with additional skill requirements, signalling that even though some jobs had died away, others may have emerged. The study also finds some evidence to suggest that establishments highly exposed to AI reduced hiring in jobs that do not require AI skills.

On more aggregate levels however, the study does not find any conclusive evidence to show that more exposure to AI impacts employment and wages. The authors attribute this to the fact that AI technologies are still in their infancy and have spread only to a limited part of the US economy.

The authors suggest more research on why exposure to AI is not closely linked with hiring in non-AI jobs. They say their study cant predict yet which way AI will gowhether it will complement or substitute human capabilitiesbecause the scope of AI of the future could be different from today.

Biden administration plans to continue to seek extradition of WikiLeaks’ Assange: official – Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Joe Bidens administration plans to continue to seek to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange from the United Kingdom to the United States to face hacking conspiracy charges, the U.S. Justice Department said.

Justice Department spokesman Marc Raimondi on Tuesday said the U.S. government will continue to challenge a British judges ruling last month that Assange should not be extradited to the United States because of the risk he would commit suicide.

In a Jan. 4 ruling, the judge, Vanessa Baraitser, said, I find that the mental condition of Mr. Assange is such that it would be oppressive to extradite him to the United States of America.

The British judge set Friday as a deadline for the United States to appeal her ruling forbidding Assanges extradition.

Raimondi said the United States will challenge Baraitsers ruling. We continue to seek his extradition.

WikiLeaks drew fury from the U.S. government after publishing thousands of pages of once-secret reports and documents generated by American military and intelligence agencies, including detailed descriptions of CIA hacking capabilities. WikiLeaks also published emails hacked from Democrat Hillary Clintons 2016 campaign and a key adviser, which Clinton and some of her supporters say was a factor in her election defeat to Republican Donald Trump.

Debate over possible American moves to seek Assanges extradition from Britain first arose nearly a decade ago when Barack Obama served as president and Joe Biden as his vice president.

Obamas Justice Department decided not to seek Assanges extradition on the grounds that what Assange and WikiLeaks did was too similar to journalistic activities protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Trump administration officials stepped up public criticism of Assange and WikiLeaks only weeks after taking office in January 2017 and subsequently filed a series of increasingly harsh criminal charges accusing Assange of participating in a hacking conspiracy.

Assange supporters have been pressing the Biden administration to drop charges against him during Bidens first 100 days in the White House.
