The below chart shows filings by Technology ("Tech")Center over time from 2000 to 2022.

Note that the right-most side of the graph slopes down becauseof the 18-month "Publication Delay," during whichinformation for newer patent application filings is not yetpublicly available. See37 CFR 1.211.

The above chart organizes patent application filings byTech Center. As shown, most AI-related patentapplications fall into one of two Tech Centers. First,Tech Center 2100(purple color in theabove graph) includes examiners that handle "ComputerArchitecture and Software" inventions. It is not surprisingthat many AI-related patent applications end up here because TechCenter 2100 includes the specific AI-relatedArt Unit 2120, which handles technology involving "AI& Simulation/Modeling."

Second,Tech Center 2600(red color in the abovegraph) handles "Communications" technology. Tech Center2600 includes several art units devoted to graphic and visualprocessing, such as Art Unit 2615 ("Computer GraphicProcessing") and Art Unit 2660 ("Digital Cameras; ImageAnalysis; Applications; pattern Recognition; Color and Compression;Enhancement and Transformation"). Such Art Units handleAI-related patent applications that involve image processing. Thiscan include the use of a Convolutional Neural Network("CNN") to detect, classify, and/or predict objects intwo-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) space.

Together these two Tech Centers receive a majority of theAI-related patent application filings.

For example, during the year 2018, Tech Center 2100 saw1,733 filings, and Tech Center 2600 saw 1,416 filings.

Later, in the year 2020, these two centers still saw the mostfilings but were reversed in respective rankings as to the numberof filings, where Tech Center 2100 saw 2,152 filings, and TechCenter 2600 saw 2,542 filings.

This suggests that graphical or image-related AI patentapplication filings have overtaken non-graphical or non-imageAI-related filings by the year 2020.

As good news for AI inventors, these two Tech Centers experiencehigh percentages of allowance. The below chart shows the patentapplication allowance rate by Tech Center.

As shown above, AI-related patent applications handled by TechCenter 2100 (purple bar in the above graph) has a relatively highallowance rate (84%). AI-related patent applications handled byTech Center 2600 (red bar in the above graph) has an even higherallowance rate (91%).

This finding can be contrasted toTech Center 3600(yellow bar in the abovegraph), which handles patent applications for a mix ofbusiness-related technologies, i.e.: "Transportation,Construction, Electronic Commerce, Agriculture, National Securityand License and Review."

Certain art units of Tech Center 3600, such as Art Unit 3620("Business Methods"), are infamous for issuingpatent-eligibility rejections pursuant to 35 USC 101. Suchrejections can be difficult to overcome and explains the much lowerallowance rate of 67% for Tech Center 3600.

Accordingly, staying out of Tech Center 3600 remains a viablestrategy for patentees.

Artificial intelligence innovation among automotive industry companies has dropped off in the last year – just-auto.com

Research and innovation in artificial intelligence in the automotive manufacturing and supply sector has declined in the last year.

The most recent figures show that the number of AI related patent applications in the industry stood at 253 in the three months ending March down from 300 over the same period in 2021.

Figures for patent grants related to AI followed a different pattern to filings growing from 44 in the three months ending March 2021 to 69 in the same period in 2022.

The figures are compiled by GlobalData, who track patent filings and grants from official offices around the world. Using textual analysis, as well as official patent classifications, these patents are grouped into key thematic areas, and linked to key companies across various industries.

AI is one of the key areas tracked by GlobalData. It has been identified as being a key disruptive force facing companies in the coming years, and is one of the areas that companies investing resources in now are expected to reap rewards from.

The figures also provide an insight into the largest innovators in the sector.

Toyota Motor Corp was the top AI innovator in the automotive manufacturing and supply sector in the latest quarter. The company, which has its headquarters in Japan, filed 70 AI related patents in the three months ending March. That was up from 52 over the same period in 2021.

It was followed by the Germany based Porsche Automobil Holding SE with 24 AI patent applications, the United States based Ford Motor Co (24 applications), and Ireland based Aptiv Plc. (21 applications).

Aptiv Plc. Has recently ramped up R&D in AI. It saw growth of 47.6% in related patent applications in the three months ending March compared to the same period in 2021 - the highest percentage growth out of all companies tracked with more than 10 quarterly patents in the automotive manufacturing and supply sector.

Davos 2022: Artificial intelligence is vital in the race to meet the SDGs – Imperial College London

As world leaders meet in Davos this week for the World Economic Forum, President Alice Gast writes on using AI in the race to meet the SDGs.

President Gast writes: "It is imperative that we put good processes and practices in place to ensure AI is developed in a positive and ethical way to see it adopted and used to its fullest by citizens and governments.

"We must now work together to ensure that artificial intelligence can accelerate progress of the Sustainable Development Goals and help us get back on track to reaching them by 2030."

President Gast highlighted some of the projects at Imperial that are harnessing the potential of AI to reach the SDGs.

Researchers from Google Health, DeepMind, the NHS, Northwestern University and colleagues at Imperial have designed andtrained an AI modelto spot breast cancer from X-ray images.

The computer algorithm, which was trained using mammography images from almost 29,000 women, was shown to be as effective as human radiologists in spotting cancer. At a time whenhealth services around the world are stretchedas they deal with long backlogs of patients following the pandemic, this sort of technology can help ease bottlenecks and improve treatment.

For malaria, a handheld lab-on-a-chip molecular diagnostics systems developed with AI could revolutionize how the disease is detected in remote parts of Africa. The project, which is led by the Digital Diagnostics for Africa Network, brings together collaborators such as MinoHealth AI Labs in Ghana and Imperials Global Development Hub. This technology could help pave the way for universal health coverage and push us towards achieving SDG3.

With an expanding global population,we face challenges around food demand and production not only how to reduce malnourishment but the impact on the planet too, such as deforestation, emissions and biodiversity loss. To meet these needs, the use of artificial intelligence in agriculture is growing rapidly and is enabling farmers to enhance crop production, direct machinery to carry out tasks autonomously, and identify pest infestations before they occur.

Smart sensing technology is also helping farmers use fertilizer more effectively and reduce environmental damage.An exciting research project, funded by the EPSRC, Innovate UK and Cytiva, will help growers optimize timing and amount of fertilizer to use on their crops, taking into account factors like the weather and soil condition. This will reduce the expense and damaging effects of over-fertilizing soil.

A new whale identification program uses artificial intelligence to identify humpbacks by their flukes. Through photographs shared by whale watchers, the citizens science program Happy Whale has recorded thousands of whales that travel to and from Alaska.

Its a special moment, watching a gigantic humpback going for a deep dive. The whales back arches, the tail swings up, disappearing below the surface, like the pointed toes of an Olympic diver.

The tail fins or flukes are unique to each whale. The black and white pattern on the underside are precise identifiers.

Like facial recognition, we can tell who it is, said Ted Cheeseman, an expedition scientist who has studied whales all over the world, including in Antarctica. He co-founded the program, Happy Whale, as a way to track humpbacks, a species thats known to travel thousands of miles. Its helping to answer a lot of questions about their individual behavior.

Who does the whale hang out with? Does the whale have a calf? Cheeseman said. What is the larger story here such that we can build family relationships and so on, tell more of the story of the individual. To me, thats a huge part of this.

The difference between this photo ID program and others in the past is the man power needed. Happy Whale uses an automated computer program to ID the photos instead of people doing it by hand. Just one full-time and two part-time employees run the database and confirm the results.

The program started in 2015 but took years to test and fine tune. Now, whale watchers can share their fluke photos and locations to the online database, which has identified 68,000 humpbacks worldwide.

The program started with 18,000 whale photos that had been previously identified by hand. Cheeseman says Happy Whale is more efficient.

Somebody gives me a data set of a thousand photos, it used to be that that would be an hour per photo, Cheeseman said. The actual matching time is now insignificant. If someone gives me a thousand photos I can tell them the next day that, Oh, 700 of them are these known whales and these 300, those are probably new, you know, its pretty cool.

The program has documented about 30,000 humpbacks in the North Pacific, which Cheeseman expects is about 70 percent of the population.

Participants are rewarded for their work. They usually get an initial response within a few days to a week and get notices when their whale is spotted again.

Dennis Rogers, a long-time whale watching guide in Petersburg, has uploaded over 5,500 photos to the program.

Its very interesting just to see the migrations, Rogers said. Some of these whales go to Hawaii for the winter and theyre resighted there, which we get a notification when that resighting happens. Some of our whales go to Mexico. Its real interesting, some of our whales go to Mexico one year and to Hawaii the next year.

Rogers encourages his clients to send in their photos as well. He says other tracking systems, including satellite tags, can fall off whales within days.

This is purely un-invasive and gives a great amount of information over time. Some of our whales weve been tracking close to 40 years, Rogers said.

The program has found some unusual migrations in Alaskas individual whales, said Scott Roberge, a board member for Petersburgs Marine Mammal Center.

Theyve followed one from Alaska to Hawaii to Japan back to Alaska, Roberge said. Made the loop of the North Pacific.

Roberge also contributes photographs and enjoys getting the feedback.

Its incredible to get that information and to get the email that says, Oh, the whale that you took a picture of last summer was just found in Hawaii and it just had a baby, he said.

Cheeseman believes that over 95 percent of humpbacks in Southeast Alaska are in the database already. But thats just the start of Happy Whale as the program is expanding. Cheeseman hopes to automate dorsal fin recognition within the year, which would allow them to identify and track orcas and other species a lot faster.

Cheeseman gave a presentation in Petersburg, May 18 at the Wright Auditorium.

We live in an era of biometric revolution, a technology that allows the verification of a person's identity through fingerprints or facial recognition. We encounter it when unlocking a phone, safely accessing company premises or a bank account.

Since 2007 a Slovak company Innovatrics, founded by Jn Lunter Jr., has been involved in biometrics. On a global scale, the company is a strong player that has already verified the identity of more than a billion people.

Facial biometrics has significantly expanded the commercial capabilities of the technology, as cameras are cheaper and therefore used by more employees than fingerprint scanners.

When Innovatrics started, facial biometrics had a high error rate, but thanks to the development of neural networks and artificial intelligence, its reliability has significantly improved.

Recently, the company launched a project to improve the technology. For this purpose, the company has hired five Ukrainians and plans to employ more in the near future.

"We didn't want to be a charity, so we offered Ukrainians a job that would make sense for them, as well as for us," explains Jn Zborsk, a Communication Manager in the company.

The Innovatrics Ukrainian team's task is to create datasets to teach artificial intelligence to check liveness. In other words, software will identify whether the system is looking at a photo from a magazine, a living person, or a person wearing a mask during an identification check.

Why? The coronavirus pandemic has created a boom in technologies that enable companies to communicate with clients remotely. One such example is banks that allow the opening of an account from a living room.

Review: ‘Breaking The News’ The press, politics, and profit – Socialist Appeal

Since the invention of the printing press, the news has had the power to educate and mislead people in equal measure. In the British Librarys new exhibition, Breaking the News (open until 21 August), the lid is lifted on the tendentious history of the bourgeois press.

The exhibition opens with video interviews with the residents of Grenfell Tower who, five years on, have seen precious little in the way of justice. Though the mainstream media were quick to descend on the community for interviews and features after the tragedy struck, victims concerns relating to corruption and safety violations were sidelined.

You are the mouthpiece of this government, one former resident said: You are the people who make this possible. You are the ones who validate it. You are just as culpable.

This neatly encapsulates the burning anger many feel towards not just the political establishment, but their lackeys in the mainstream media.

Though journalism is often presented as a noble crusade to speak truth to power, the exhibition reveals how profit is the bottom line motivating those in charge of the media monopolies.

The carefully curated spin of the press means that the coverage of big stories in fact lands further from the truth.

Though Britain makes a great song and dance about free speech, in contrast to declared pariahs such as Russia, the exhibition lays bare this assertion.

The press was and remains a tool in the arsenal of the ruling class, through which political censorship has been used in order to defend its own interests.

For example, in 2013, Edward Snowden leaked top-secret intelligence documents to the Guardian, detailing extensive mass surveillance. Despite the fact that the information had already been shared, the British state insisted on a purely symbolic act of intimidation, demanding that the computers which had been used to store the data were destroyed.

The damaged memory disks and hard drives, displayed in the Library, communicate the message beyond a doubt that the free press is only free so long as it doesnt undermine the interests of the ruling class.

Of course, this was only a symbolic gesture. Far more nefarious is the way Snowden, Chelsea Manning, Julian Assange, and many other whistleblowers, were pursued and prosecuted by the US state for their leaks of confidential information detailing US war crimes, privacy violations, and the like.

The exhibition, to its credit, does not present this as simply a one off. Though the means may have changed, the aims to censor and subvert ideas that threaten the status quo have precedence.

For instance, the 19th-century Chartist movement brought with it a huge proliferation of workers newspapers. Affordable papers and pamphlets carried the political slogans of the Chartists to the masses. To prevent this, the government introduced an increased taxation on papers.

Far from preventing the spread of the workers press, however, it simply accelerated it, as illegal papers were printed en masse. Some printers tried all sorts of ways to get around the increased tax.

Unfortunately, Breaking The News does not exhibit any of the Chartist papers. But it does display one pamphlet, the Political Handkerchief, printed on cloth to get around the stamp tax.

Eventually, the government was forced to renege their decision, realising that their efforts were in vain. Much to their dismay, it had become impossible to ban the revolutionary ideas of the Chartists and the class anger they contained.

The exhibition also exposes the role of the press in influencing elections, sometimes through outright fabrications.

The 1992 cover of The Sun proudly proclaiming Rupert Murdochs contribution to the Conservative victory over Kinnocks Labour is a major feature of the exhibition. The headline declares: Its The Sun Wot Won It.

Less known, but perhaps even more scandalous, is the 1924 Zinoviev letter, published by the Daily Mail four days before the 1924 election.

This false document, supposedly written by Zinoviev, the head of the Communist International at the time, claimed that Anglo-Soviet relations under a Labour government would be used to incite a revolution in Britain.

Displayed next to the Daily Mail is a telegram from Zinoviev, which describes the letter as a gross falsification and a clumsy election manoeuvre. But as they say in the business: Why let the facts spoil a good story?

We need not over-emphasise the power and sway of the press, however. Under the white-hot heat of the class struggle, the rejection of the mainstream medias official line and falsifications begins to assume a mass character.

Nothing proves this more than the experience of the English Revolution. The growing revolutionary mood in society was often expressed through radical religious ideas, which were proliferated through thousands of political pamphlets.

As state censorship grew weaker in the early years of the English Civil War, more and more unofficial printing presses sprung up, reflecting the thirst for ideas capable of changing the world.

The truth is that every newspaper is partisan. The bourgeois papers, however, shamefacedly attempt to conceal their real agenda beneath a thin veneer of impartiality.

But despite the fact that the whole exhibition reveals this, the British Library cannot resist one exhibit entitled the partisan press.

The exhibit is printed to show how so-called extreme political newspapers can distort the truth to suit their own agendas. This reveals the liberal limitations of the exhibition itself.

Far from Marxists needing to obscure the truth from workers, it is our duty to tell the truth.

As Leon Trotsky once wrote: The truth is always revolutionary. To lay bare the truth of their position before the oppressed is to lead them to the highroad of revolution.

From the English Revolution to the Chartists, the masses always seek to find their own political expression; their own independent class voice. The more this reflects the struggle of the working class, and formulates the tasks ahead, the more it will reverberate and find a wider echo.

As the crisis of capitalism deepens, we must make haste in building the revolutionary press, capable of acting as a tribune of the people.

Grimes Will Donate Dune-Inspired Met Gala Accessories To Ukraine Relief – The Blast

Grimes wants to do some good to help Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.

The singer made a big announcement Tuesday about how she wants to help BIPOC families in the war-torn country.

In an Instagram post shared on Tuesday, May 17, Grimes uploaded a photo of her look from the 2021 Met Gala, alongside up-close shots of the head-turning accessories she wore for the prestigious fashion event.

As The Blast previously, the Canadian musician dropped heads at the event where she walked the red carpet with her then-boyfriend billionaire Elon Musk.

The Genesis songstress donned a blue metallic outfit custom-made by Iris van Herpen of liquid silicone and hand-pleated silk.

Grimes outfit was Dune-inspired as part of a promotional for the science fiction film which was to be released the following month. The gown which reportedly took 900 hours to make was paired with a futuristic silver metal face mask, a giant silver sword, and lace-up platform boots from Marc Jacobs.

The mind-blowing sword accessory was allegedly made from unwanted automatic rifles that were liquefied.

Now, months after the 2021 Met Gala, Grimes wants to auction pieces from her iconic look to help Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) families that are still trapped in Ukraine.

In the accompanying caption of her post, the Shinigami Eyes star wrote, Hey guys Im auctioning stuff from my Met gala look last year to raise money to help get BIPOC families out of Ukraine since theyre having trouble exiting at the border.

She continued, explaining that stylist Turner in collaboration with HVW8 Gallery exhibited the works of 50 distinguished artists who aim to support Emergency Response & BIPOC families (black, indigenous, and people of color) in and out of Ukraine.

Each piece offers a unique interpretation of the theme resistance,' Grimes shared. The work will simultaneously be auctioned online via the Artsy exchange. All proceeds will go to Diaspora Relief and Razom, which will use the funds to provide food, shelter, and evacuation support to those in need.

Bidding for Grimes accessories would take place exclusively on Artsy and be closed on May 26.

In the comments section, fans cheered the wonderful initiative with several beautiful messages. One fan wrote, Ahhhh this is so amazing while another added, This is such an important thing your doing thank you Claire.

Per reports, the Chris Habana hard-shell facial is worth $1,200 while the elven ear cuffs by Sofia Pavlova are estimated at $1,500.

As you might know, Grimes, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher, was in a relationship with Musk from 2018 to February 2022.

The pair first made headlines when they walked the 2018 Met Gala red carpet and are parents to two children, X A-Xii and daughter Exa Dark Siderl Musk, whom they secretly welcomed via surrogate after they had split.

However, it seems the 34-year-old singer has wasted no time in moving on. As The Blast previously covered, Grimes is suspected of being in a relationship with hacker Chelsea Manning.

Speculations surfaced after grimes referred to Manning as her boyfriend in her pregnancy announcement. The rumored couple is reportedly moving at a fast pace as sources claim that are already living together in Austin.

The lovebirds have been conversing online via Twitter for months, with Manning often seen responding to interactions that involve her.

Such was the case when comedian Hasan Minhaj shared a tweet about Grime promising to be a guest on his show to which Manning replied, Vouch.

Its unsure what he meant, but fans believe that is the start of a romantic relationship between the pair. Neither Grimes nor Manning have publicly denied or confirmed the rumors of a romance.
