Open Source Software: Sailing Into Friendlier Seas

By Jack M. Germain 08/26/14 8:09 PM PT

Open source software is now a force drawing enterprises and developers like a magnet.

The factors pulling adopters into the open source fold are changing, though. Also changing are the attitudes of software developers and corporate leaders about the viability and adaptability of open source.

Open source software is increasingly important within the corporation, as a recent survey conducted by Black Duck Software and North Bridge Venture Partners found.

Developers and corporate leaders now view open source software as a strategic advantage that can help companies create more secure products with better features and functionality. This helps adopters beat the competition.

More first-time developers are using open source, the research indicates. The open source movement over the next few years will gain new industries such as education, healthcare and government. Open source software is powering some of the hottest technologies in the enterprise today, among them cloud computing and the Internet of Things.

The growing trend of open source supplanting proprietary software is not the Black Duck-North Bridge annual survey's exclusive finding. Other research bears it out.

"It is very consistent with what I see in my own developer surveys and the surveys the Eclipse organization runs on a yearly basis," said Jeffrey S. Hammond, vice president and principal analyst for application development and delivery professionals at Forrester Research.

There's been a sea change in terms of IT department and enterprise support for considering open source software first, the Black Duck-North Bridge survey found, and it is having a significant impact on proprietary software.

For example, consider Microsoft's journey over the past 10 years, suggested Hammond. Microsoft changed from labeling open source software "a cancer" to starting up Codeplex.org and integrating its products with numerous OSS projects like Linux and Git.

Mozilla launches $33 smartphone

Mozilla has begun selling its first low-cost smartphone in India for 1,999 rupees ($33), in a bid to build market share for its open source software in the worlds fastest growing market for such devices.

The Cloud FX phone will run Mozillas Firefox operating system and offer games and other content through its applications store, Jane Hsu, the companys Taipei-based director of product marketing said at a New Delhi briefing yesterday. The device has 128 megabytes of RAM memory, a two- megapixel camera, and a one gigahertz processor, she said.

Mozillas inexpensive smartphone push might be its best bet for gaining users in India, where more people access the internet through smartphones than computers. Indian consumers will buy about 225 million smartphones this year, according to Brad Rees, chief executive officer of Mediacells Ltd., a London- based marketing company. The biggest barrier for feature phone users is cost and usability, Hsu said, referring to upgrading users of devices with limited Internet capability. We think this is the best phone for them.

Intex Technologies (India) Ltd., based in New Delhi, manufactured the Cloud FX smartphone that went on sale yesterday on the e-commerce site Snapdeal.com. Intex plans to sell 500,000 Mozilla phones in the next three months, company product head Sudhir Kumar said in New Delhi yesterday.

Mozilla will introduce a $38 phone later this week made by Spice Mobility Ltd., based near New Delhi. Hsu said other deals with Indian smartphone makers will be announced in coming weeks that she declined to identify.

Mozilla unveiled its operating system in July 2013 with mid-priced phones in Latin America and Europe, subsidised through local wireless carriers. Now in 15 countries, this is Mozillas first foray into Asia, said Hsu.

Smartphones set out to decipher a cryptographic system

13 hours ago by Sbastien Corthsy Ramasany Gowthami. Credit: Alain Herzog / EPFL 2014

While carrying out her master thesis on computer science, Ramasany Gowthami participated in the creation of an Android app by means of which users get together to crack a modern cryptographic code.

Modern cryptography is not infallible. All encryption types, among which we can find the widely used RSA, can theoretically be broken. If so, how to ensure that our data remains protected? The answer lies on the time and computational effort required to break the code. Cracking a sufficiently long encryption key can be expensive up to the point of being unattainable in practice.

The LACAL laboratory at EPFL, renowned for its many achievements in the field of cryptography and led by Arjen Lenstra, was interested in solving a problem based on elliptic curve cryptography developed in the early 1980s. After having thwarted the security of our passwords by using a network of 300 PlayStation 3 game consoles, the researchers decided to take on this new challenge, on this occasion by using thousands of smartphones working together. "All of us do not necessarily have a computer for running the algorithm, making it difficult to gather a few dozen. On the other hand, everyone has a smartphone, and launching the application becomes a child's game!" said Ramasany Gowthami, a master student in computer science that participated on the project. By running the algorithm a very large number of times the code may be broken eventually. To do this, users simply launch the application and press a button. The app also allows users to register, form teams, view their statistics and thus measure their participation in this unprecedented undertaking.

Despite her apprehension about the mathematical part of the project, Ramasany Gowthami does not regret having plunged into this domain for her master's thesis. She acknowledges that the part of the implementation of which she was in charge required long working weeks to get to understand the whole project. "Since I was in charge of the interface between the program's components, I had to have a perfect knowledge of the elements of the algorithm," she explains. "What is my best memory? When I managed to put it all in my head and was able to grasp the entire project! ".

Why this desire to crack an unbroken cryptographic system at all costs? "It's just as important as designing new and more efficient systems," she explained. "We know that the systems can be broken at some point. That's why it is important to constantly assess them in order to know their limitations and adapt them if they are no longer safe. This can be done, for example, by extending the length of the encryption key. Perhaps a similar evaluation work on the SSL would have prevented the (in) famous Heartbleed bug!"

CRYPTOCURRENCY ON THE RISE: Such doge, much profit

This is Part III of the Cryptocurrency On The Rise series. Be sure to check out Part I (http://bit.ly/1cwdhrB) and Part II (http://bit.ly/1b6cGvz), otherwise a bunch of this stuff might be confusing as hell. If youre reading the newsstand version (on paper! Who the hell prints things on paper anymore, I doubt thats a thing thatll be around much longer), you can catch the previous installments on the Internet, where everything lives forever.

On Monday, Jan. 20, just two days after the start of the campaign, 27 million Dogecoins (approximately $30,000 after conversion) were donated to the cash-strapped Jamaican bobsled team, putting them over their target fundraising goal and allowing the two-man team to travel to and compete in the Olympics competition for the first time since 2002. Spurred on by the successful Dogecoin Foundation initiative, fans of the virtual currency have broadened the efforts in order to bring multiple Indian skiers, who will be skiing under the general Olympic banner, to the Games as well.

Like many wonderful things, Dogecoin began as a joke. During the height of Bitcoins meteoric rise last fall, Adobe marketer Jackson Palmer tweeted an off the cuff comment about investing in Dogecoin, a play on the popular Shiba Inu internal dialog meme (oh, just google doge and youll figure it out quick enough). Friends immediately glommed onto the idea, Palmer threw together dogecoin.com as a response, and after a bit of back and forth with coder Billy Markus, the two set about actually making Dogecoin a reality.

Using the codebase of Litecoin as a starting point, Markus and Palmer deviated from the cryptocurrency norm by greatly increasing the rate of mining - Dogecoin will be completely mined within a year and a half, versus Bitcoins exhaustion in 2014 - as well as the total number of eventual coins in circulation (100 billion Dogecoin versus 21 million Bitcoin).

While unplanned, the availability and ease of mining helped counter the hoarding behavior often exhibited by cryptocurrency enthusiasts, and Dogecoin quickly found use as an appreciation and tipping currency on Reddit and other sites, with crowds of Shibes - as supporters of Dogecoin call themselves - handing out thousands of Dogecoin in response to informative articles, humorous comments, and other community-building activities.

On Christmas Day, online Dogecoin wallets Instadoge and Dogewallet were hacked, resulting in the theft of over 30 million Dogecoin from the sites users. Almost immediately, members of the community began to step up with pledges to help reimburse victims of the theft. Within days the SaveDogemas campaign was born.

In the month since Christmas, millions of Dogecoin have been donated, showcasing a level of camaraderie and generosity nearly unheard of in the dog eat dog (sigh, sorry) world of cryptocurrency.

Even as speculators have jumped into the market, buying and selling millions of dollars worth of Dogecoin on multiple exchanges, even as the value has grown a hundredfold, the freewheeling and generous nature of Shibes has persisted. Dogecoin now accounts for more transaction volume than all other cryptocurrencies combined, with ever-increasing charity donations, trades for real and virtual goods, and a tipping culture that has expanded beyond Reddit to Twitter, Facebook, and even SMS.

At its current pace, the coin is well on its way to becoming a legitimate and viable social currency Shiba Inu, Comic Sans, and all. To the moon!

Hey, the D Las Vegas casino-hotel! Last week you made the were accepting Bitcoin! announcement, and got a ton of awareness and traffic out of it. Kudos, and great move by the way.
