Microsoft Says PCs Also at Risk to ‘Freak’ Bug

Hundreds of millions of Windows PC users are vulnerable to attacks exploiting the recently uncovered "Freak" encryption security flaw, which was initially believed to only threaten mobile devices and Mac computers, Microsoft warned. A group of nine security experts on Tuesday disclosed that ubiquitous Internet encryption technology could make devices running Apples iOS and Mac operating systems, along with Google's Android browser, vulnerable to cyberattacks. Microsoft released a security advisory on Thursday warning customers that their PCs were also vulnerable to the Freak vulnerability. The weakness could allow attacks on PCs that connect with Web servers configured to use encryption technology intentionally weakened to comply with U.S. government regulations banning exports of the strongest encryption. If hackers are successful, they could spy on communications as well as infect PCs with malicious software, the researchers who uncovered the threat said.

Security experts said the vulnerability was relatively difficult to exploit because hackers would need to find a vulnerable web server, break the key, find a vulnerable PC or mobile device, then gain access to that device.

Microsoft advised system administrators to employ a workaround to disable settings on Windows servers that allow use of the weaker encryption. It said it had not yet developed a security update that would automatically protect Windows PC users from the threat. Apple and Google both said Wednesday they had developed software updates to address the vulnerability. "Freak" stands for Factoring RSA-EXPORT Keys.

Advanced Technologies to Accelerate Evolution to 5G

Due to saturation and fragmentation of frequency resources in bands below 6GHz being used today for mobile telecommunications, technologies that enable the utilization of mmWave frequency bands will play an important part in realizing early commercialization of 5G.*Millimeter-wave (mmWave) refers to electromagnetic waves with a frequency of 30GHz to 300GHz, and wavelength between 1mm to 10mm.

The company will also showcase new telecommunications technologies, including Fast Data Platform for Network, T Oven and Quantum Cryptography System to enhance the completeness of the 5G network system.

Fast Data Platform is an innovative platform that prevents service quality degradation by collecting and analyzing Big Data generated by the network, and T OVEN is a technology capable of orchestrating a virtualized network.

Quantum Cryptography System is by far the best data security technology as it uses quantum mechanics to prevent hacking of data in transit unlike the traditional data security technology that uses a cryptography algorithm based on prime factorization. The system, once commercialized, will open a new paradigm in security of national backbone network, financial network and medical information network.

Five Different 5G Platforms in Areas of IoT, Location-based Service, Intelligence, Commerce and Big Data

At this year's MWC exhibition, SK Telecom will also suggest how people's lives will be transformed in the 5G era through innovative platforms designed to maximize the value of the 5G network.

Court Orders Army To Stop Referring To Chelsea Manning As …

WASHINGTON -- An army appeals court has ordered the military to stop its regular practice of referring to Private First Class Chelsea Manning as a man.

The military had been asked by Manning and her attorney to cease the habit, but filed an official opposition to that request. The Army Court of Criminal Appeals has now ruled on the matter, ordering that future formal papers filed before this court and all future orders and decisions issued by this court shall either be neutral, e.g., Private First Class Manning or appellant, or employ a feminine pronoun.

Nancy Hollander, Mannings lead attorney, applauded the court's decision. This is an important victory for Chelsea, who has been mistreated by the government for years," she said in a statement. "Though only a small step in a long legal fight, my co-counsel, Vincent Ward, Captain Dave Hammond, and I are thrilled that Chelsea will be respected as the woman she is in all legal filings."

Manning shared hundreds of thousands of classified documents with Wikileaks, including some that revealed apparent war crimes, and in 2013 was sentenced to 35 years in prison for espionage and other offenses.

In a Feb. 9 brief, Army Capt. Daniel Goldberg argued for the government that Manning had provided no explanation of how her request would "serve the interest of justice."

Goldberg said that "to avoid confusion," the government wished to continue referring to the appeals case by the unwieldy title of "Private First Class (E-3), BRADLEY E. MANNING (nka CHELSEA E. MANNING)." He said the government intended to continue using masculine pronouns "[u]nless directed otherwise by this honorable court."

ACLU attorney Chase Strangio, who is representing Manning in her effort to get medical treatment for gender dysphoria, praised Thursday's court decision: The court rightly recognized that dignifying Chelseas womanhood is not the trivial matter that the government attempted to frame it as. This is an important development in Chelseas fight for adequate medical care for her gender dysphoria. That fight continues but at least the government can no longer attempt to erase Chelseas identity by referring to her as male in every legal filing."

The military is still objecting to her request to grow her hair out, as other female prisoners are allowed to do.

The ruling comes at a time when military leaders may be poised to revisit the ban on transgender troops. Just weeks into his job, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said last month that he's "very open-minded" about transgender military personnel. The White House later endorsed Carter's comments.

An estimated 15,500 transgender people are already serving in the military in secret, according to a 2014 Williams Institute report.
