Chelsea Manning Remains Steadfast In Face Of Mainstream Media Criticism – Mintpress News (blog)

In her first interview since being released, ABC News pits Chelsea Manning against a former NSA deputy director.

Published in partnership with Shadowproof.

Whether in an imperfect or hostile setting, Chelsea Mannings persevering spirit and humanity never fails to shine. That was certainly the case in her exclusive interview for Nightline on ABC.

The United States Army whistleblower describes her military prison life at Fort Leavenworth as a daily fight for survival. She shares how it was profound and moving when she finally was able to hug her attorneys because her sentence was commuted by President Barack Obama.

It made it real. It was a tactile feeling of reality, Manning says. And she adds, So the next day, I was surrounded by nature and beauty. People were beautiful because they werent wearing the same uniform as everyone else.

Asked about attempting suicide at Leavenworth, Manning confronts the bleakness she endured as a transgender woman trying to be herself.

Its a very dark place. Youre like if I cant be me, then who am I? You just want the pain to stop, the pain of not knowing who you are or why you are this way. You just want it to go away.

It almost does not matter that the news program applies the same tired approach that most outlets have applied to her story throughout her case. Her conscientiousness transcends the format, which includes being pit against a former NSA deputy director, in order to make the segment fair and objective, even though this person has no connection to her case whatsoever.

During the section of the interview about the information she released, Manning maintains her resolve. She mentions her superior officers saw the Apache helicopter attack that killed two Reuters journalists and a father of two children. They saw it as just another incident.

We need more means of being able to safely and securely reveal government wrongdoing, Manning declares.

This is when Nightline brings in former NSA deputy director Rick Ledgett. He argues Manning didnt go through any of the whistleblowing channels at the time, that she could have gone tothe Judge Advocate General. She could have gone to her congressional representatives. They would have welcomed that.

But had she gone through any channels, the information would have never been released to the public. She may have never been authorized to talk about her concerns about counterinsurgency warfare and diplomacy with concerned citizens, as she has done.

Almost certainly, going through channels would have raised red flags. A soldier who tells their superior officers this is information the public needs to know would be put undera microscope to ensure there were no security clearance violations. She might lost her clearance over some petty offense.

She was struggling with mental health problems and did lose access to information prior to her arrest, so how could she havethe confidence to go to a superior with any of this when they would not even let her serve as an openly gay intelligence analyst, let alone a transgender woman?

Anchor Juju Chang asks Ledgett if there is anything to the idea that Manning honorably put her own liberty and military career on the line to expose this information.

Does that sound extraordinarily arrogant to you? It does to me, Ledgett replied.

The former NSA deputy director continued, Its to say that my judgment is better than that of everybody else, so Im going to take this upon myself to make this decision with consequences that I couldnt possibly understand, and Im going to do it because it makes me feel like Im doing the right thing. Thats the definition of arrogance.

Such a statement exemplifies the institutional hostility to whistleblowers within most U.S. intelligence agencies.

Furthermore, what Ledgett articulates applies more to the very people who run U.S. intelligence agencies and military branches. They make decisions on matters of life and death on a daily basis in the shadows and resist efforts for accountability and transparency. They definitely think their judgment is better than those who are able to provide oversight or expose their misconduct to the world. They have nothing but hubris when it comes to their actions.

Later in the exclusive, Chang mentions that files Manning disclosed were found on storage devices at Osama bin Ladens compound. The inclusion of this detail amounts to pushing propaganda.

Military prosecutors introduced this as evidence to convict Manning of aiding the enemy or treason. It ultimately did not persuade the military judge, as Manning was acquitted of the charge. Bin Laden possessing the information is no different from saying bin Laden had New York Times articles with classified information related to the Afghanistan War. That would not make the Times guilty of a crime.

At least, Ledgett has the decency to state for the camera, I think [Mannings] paid her debt and needs a chance to start overagain with a clean slate with a felony on her record. However, as attorneys for her appeal make clear, allowing her convictions under the Espionage Act to stand has implications.

This case is really about what are the scope of the whistleblower protections for people who possess national security information, attorney Vincent Ward states.

Attorney Nancy Hollander adds, This is a fundamental issue of free speech in this country. If we dont have free speech, we dont have a democracy, and this gets right to the core of that.

It is deeply moving to hear Manning talk about the letters from young transgender people. They recognized she needed unconditional love. They were seeing in me what I was looking for when I was their age.

She reads from one letter. You are loved. You are an inspiration to so many of us. Witnessing your courage has given me the strength to come out as trans too.

The tears well up in her eyes. Her vulnerability comes through, as she wrestles with what responsibility she has to these people who see her as an inspirational figure. She knows they arewatching and tells them to be who they are. Dont do what I did and run away from it. Things are better.

In the final moments of the interview, the lazy frame of understanding Manning as a hero or traitor surfaces once more. Chang says to Manning that she is willing to accept that some people see her as a traitor. Manning sounds a bit exasperated. And you know, okay, you know, like I disagree. Its hard to believe she accepts that people hold this perception.

Overall, it is both heartening to hear Manning speak and bothersome because corporate media outlets like ABC News bear some of the most responsibility for a public perception that Manning is a traitor.

This is the first time that any corporate broadcast news outlet took a moment to factor in Mannings side. It has always been that the U.S. government and politicians have these opinions of her case and so what do people who represent her or support her have to say. But now that she is out of prison that needle will slowly move in a direction, where more and more citizens each year come to understand her whistleblowing acts.

It may take a few decades, but like Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, she will eventually find wide support among the population.

WhiteSource Raises $10 Million to Expand Market Leadership in … – Business Wire (press release)

NEW YORK & TEL AVIV, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WhiteSource, the leader in continuous open source software security and compliance management, today announced a $10M Series B financing round led by 83North, with additional participation from Microsoft Ventures and individual investor David Strohm of Greylock Partners. The new funding will help WhiteSource expand its market leadership in open source security and compliance solutions.

Application development has undergone a revolution in recent years as organizations embrace open source software, in some cases making up to 80 percent of the code base. These practices not only reduce cost and accelerate delivery times, but also introduce management challenges and security vulnerabilities. Some of the most publicized security breaches of recent years, such as the Heartbleed bug, were introduced through the deployment of vulnerable open source components.

Founded by three serial entrepreneurs, Ron Rymon, Azi Cohen and Rami Sass, WhiteSource grew revenues 300 percent year-over-year for the last three years by tapping the need to better track and secure open source assets. The strong offering has also been recognized by Forrester, who recently ranked WhiteSource as a strong performer among all Software Composition Analysis (SCA) offerings in its 2017 Wave report.

The investment in WhiteSource follows our conviction that the rapid acceptance of open source software, which now comprises most of the new code in SMBs and enterprises, is not well managed, said Erez Ofer, Partner at 83North. This issue is exacerbated as companies employ DevOps to reduce time- to-market, increasing the need for a comprehensive solution like WhiteSources.

WhiteSources namesake solution secures and manages open source components of hundreds of enterprises and SMBs around the world. It empowers customers to fully control open source usage with real-time alerts, reports and automated enforcement of policies across the DevOps continuous process.

Our vision from the outset was to help organizations safely, securely and continuously adopt, manage and deploy open source components, stated Rami Sass, Co-founder and CEO of WhiteSource. We are a first mover, and through nonstop innovation, have built a solution that monitors code components in real-time to become an integral part of the DevOps cycle.

"Microsoft is committed to strengthening its relationship with the open source community," said Mony Hassid, general manager and managing director, Microsoft Ventures EMEA. As a Whitesource partner, weve seen firsthand the value its open source security and compliance solutions bring to enterprises. Ourinvestment in its technology is a testimonial of our drive to make open source software practical, productive and secure.

SK Telecom develops advanced quantum repeater – FierceWireless

After two years of research, SK Telecom said it has successfully developed a quantum repeater for the first time in South Korea, making it the third nation to achieve the next-generation security technology, following the U.S. and China, The Korea Times reported.

Quantum cryptography communication is considered the most secure form of communication encryption that cant be broken with existing hacking technology. Quantum cryptography is expected to replace the existing security solutions in all areas at risk of data hacking, including national defense, finance, autonomous vehicle and the internet of things (IoT), SK Telecom noted in its release.

Called the Trusted Repeater, the quantum repeater that SK developed can dramatically extend the distance of quantum communication, achieving a distance record of 112 kilometers for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). Prior to the development of this quantum repeater, the maximum QKD transmission distance was around 80 kilometers due to the fact that it involves the use of weak single-photon quantum signals. The distance limitation of QKD had been viewed as the biggest obstacle to its commercialization.

Now SK Telecom wants to pursue commercial installation, with plans to transmit quantum keys from Seoul to Busan, which is about 460 kilometers, by installing five units of its repeaters. The company will work with its global partners to apply quantum cryptography solutions, including the quantum repeater, to not only to its commercial LTE networks in Korea, but also to commercial networks overseas.

SK Telecom has opened a new chapter in the field of quantum technologies by developing the Trusted Repeater, an enabler for long-distance quantum communication, said Park Jin-hyo, senior vice president and head of Network Technology R&D Center of SK Telecom, in a statement. SK Telecom will continue to focus on developing key quantum cryptography technologies and building a related ecosystem.

SK Telecom said it applied its quantum cryptography technologies to a commercial LTE network (fiber optic cable) in Sejong City in 2016 and some parts of the advanced science and technology research network (SuperSiReN) in Daedeok Research Development Complex through cooperation with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) in May 2017.

SK Telecom has been actively developing core quantum cryptography technologies since it established Quantum TechLab in 2011. In February 2017, it entered into an agreement with Nokia to cooperate in the quantum cryptography business and established Quantum Alliance with Deutsche Telekom with the aim to enable secure communication in the age of quantum computing.

Last month, the AT&T Foundry innovation center in Palo Alto, Californiaand the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) announced they were combining forces to form the Alliance for Quantum Technologies (AQT), which aims to speed quantum technology development and emerging practical applications.

Julian Assange after rape charges dropped: Prepare for ‘war …

Julian Assange warned Friday that even though Sweden planned to drop itsinvestigation into a rape claim against him after almost seven years, his legal ordeal was "not something that I can forgive."

Assange, 45, took refuge in Ecuador's Embassy in London in 2012 to escape extradition to Sweden to answer questions about sex-crime accusations from two women. He has been there ever since, claiming officials could ultimately extradite him to the United States.

Friday's announcement meant Assange no longer was under any investigation in Sweden. However, British police said Assange was still wanted in the U.K. for jumping bail in 2012 -- so he could still face arrest if he leaves the Ecuadorean Embassy.

Speaking from the building's balcony, Assange said, "The proper war is just commencing" over his legal troubles. He also said his lawyers would contact U.K. officials to seek a way forward in resolving his status.

"It is a scandal that a suspected rapist can avoid the judicial system and thus avoid a trial in court,"a lawyer for the woman who claimed Assange raped her responded. Elisabeth Massi Fritz said her client was shocked but "she can't change her view that Assange has exposed her to a rape."

TEXT OF SWEDISH PROSECUTOR'S DECISION

Moments after the announcement, Assange's Twitter account posted a photo of him smiling.

Per E. Samuelson, Assange's lawyer in Sweden, told The Associated Press it was a "day of victory." He added that Assange was "very unhappy" about the long investigation, which he said cost his client "five, six years of his life."

Assange also says he would be "happy" to discuss the case with the U.S. government even though Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that arresting Assange was a priority. President Donald Trump has said it is "OK" with him if Sessions does that.

CONTEXT: WHAT'S NEXT FOR ASSANGE?

Sweden's top prosecutor said "costs were not a reason for putting down the investigation." Marianne Ny told a news conference: "When we investigate serious crimes, we do not consider the costs."

Fox News' Mike Arroyo and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Julian Assange cancels planned ‘special announcement’ – The Guardian

Supporters of Julian Assange had been preparing to hear from the WikiLeaks fugitive in central London on Monday. Photograph: Matt Dunham/AP

The WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, has abruptly cancelled a press conference at which he had planned to make a special announcement.

Journalists and supporters had gathered under a balcony at the Ecuadorian embassy in central London, from where Assange usually conducts press conferences.

The latest was to have coincided with the fifth anniversary of his taking refuge in the embassy.

The Swedish authorities have dropped an investigation into sex-related allegations, but there is an arrest warrant out for him in the UK accusing him of jumping bail.

Assange expressed hope in an interview with the Press Association ahead of the planned press conference that a standoff with the UK authorities might be resolved.

He cited various reasons to be hopeful. We have support across many parts of the political spectrum in the United States, including most of the mainstream media.

Within Europe there is a growing recognition that extraditing me or any of our staff to Trumps America is not a way to win votes.

Assange has repeatedly expressed fears that arrest in the UK would lead to his extradition to the US, where he could be charged with espionage offences. Without the UK arrest warrant, Assange would be free to fly to Ecuador, which has offered him asylum.

Melinda Taylor, one of Assanges legal team who was outside the embassy on Monday, said: Julian was scheduled to make a special announcement today. I am not privy to that. His UK lawyers were told there is going to be a meeting with UK authorities.

Under advisement, he cancelled the announcement to assure negotiations proceeded in an open and constructive manner because it is essential there is a resolution as soon as possible to what the UN stated is illegal and arbitrary detention.

Pamela Anderson Has A Plan To Free Boyfriend Julian Assange And It Involves Opening A Vegan Restaurant – UPROXX

Getty Image

Pamela Anderson has always had a soft spot for animals, partnering with PETA for animal rights and the promoting of vegetarian values, and now she is putting the commitment to those causes behind a business decision. Together with Chef Christophe Leroy, Anderson will be opening a vegan restaurant in the South of France that is described in an announcement on her site as festive, glamorous and Vegan and a dream come true. La Table du Marche, as she is calling the spot, will open on July 4th in Moulins de Ramatuelle and will be open from 6pm onward for 50 days only offering a gourmet, chic and romantic alternative to French diners.

But delicious vegan food and exclusivity isnt the only reason behind this venture. Apparently, Anderson hopes it may pave the way for the liberation of her boyfriend Julian Assange. The Wikileaks founder has been living in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for years now to avoid being arrested by any of a number of countries, and Anderson is hoping that newly appointed President of France Emmanuel Macron will join her at her new restaurant to talk over what can be done to loosen up Assanges current situation.

In a separate post on her website, Anderson extended an invitation to both Macron and his wife Brigitte.

I am reaching out to Emmanuel Macron, and to his wife Brigitte Trogneux. As a resident of France, my adopted home, I would like to meet with you and discuss Julians situation. I am opening a new vegan restaurant in France in July, and I would like to extend my invitation to the new President and his First Lady. Join me on the day I open the doors, and we will sit and eat good food and discuss what can be done for Julian. France could display its strength, and so could you, if you give Julian asylum.

Whether or not her master plan works to the ends she would like it to, Anderson is still providing hopefully delicious food to the people of Southern France.

Julian Assange cancels embassy speech ahead of ‘imminent meeting with UK authorities’ – Daily Echo

A planned announcement by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange from the balcony of the Ecuadorian Embassy has been deferred on the advice of his legal counsel, following the agreement of an imminent meeting with British authorities.

Mr Assange was due to make a speech at lunchtime, marking the fifth anniversary of his arrival at the embassy in London.

As scores of his supporters and media gathered outside the building, it emerged that he was not going ahead with the speech.

Mr Assanges legal team remain optimistic that a satisfactory outcome can be found which respects the British legal process and restores Mr Assanges freedom and dignity, a statement on his behalf said.

Melinda Taylor, of Mr Assanges legal team, told the Press Association: We have been given confirmation that there will be a meeting with the British authorities.

We hope that will be soon. We dont want to prejudice that meeting because we need this impasse to be resolved.

There is no legal reason to keep Julian here.

Pamela Anderson writes love letter to Julian Assange – Page Six

Pamela Anderson has penned an online love letter to Julian Assange, branding Theresa May the worst prime minister in living memory and calling for the WikiLeaks founders release.

On June 19, Assange will reportedly mark his five years of unlawful detention in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London with a special announcement from the balcony.

In a post titled Why My Heart Stands With Julian, Anderson called on world leaders, and China, to intervene and help free the Australian.

The former Baywatch star said there was no longer any reason to keep Assange trapped in a small room now Sweden has dropped its case against him.

Anderson continued: But Theresa May who kept him imprisoned in the embassy for five years refuses to allow him to leave. Theresa May, who is on her last legs. Theresa May of the pyhrric victory (sic).

Theresa May, who wont shake the hand of the victims of the Grenfell fire. Who doesnt care about poor people. Who doesnt care about justice or peace. Who doesnt care about Julian. The worst prime minister in living memory.

Anderson also invited French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte to the July opening of her new restaurant in France, and asked him to grant Assange asylum.

She also used the letter to address Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, highlighting their mutual compassion for animals, while stating that Assange should be given compensation.

In the letter posted on pamelaandersonfoundation.org, the ex-playboy model gushed over how his bravery and courage makes Assange sexy. She signed off: I love you, Pamela.

Assange has spent five years holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London.

He is set to make an announcement on June 19 to mark the five-year anniversary of his unlawful detention.

What we know about Julian Assange’s cat – Irish Examiner

Julian Assanges cat has managed to win the internets hearts but how much do we actually know about the whistle blowers furry friend in the Ecuadorian embassy?

Heres a quick run-through.

Whats she called?

We still dont actually know. Not long after her arrival, a Twitter account was set up under the name Embassy Cat and it would seem that name has stuck, even with her owner.

When she made a cameo appearance during a live broadcast by Assange on the night of the EU referendum, he referred to his latest guest as Embassy Cat.

Where did she come from?

Embassy Cat, a descendent from the original European wildcat, was a gift from Assanges young children to keep their father company.

She was just a tiny 10-week-old kitten when she was given to him in May 2016, which would make her around a year and four months now.

What does she do?

She has apparently spent much of the last year sleeping in a top hat by day and prowling the embassy by night.

Her Twitter account also specifies her interest in counter-purrveillance so whatever activity that involves, theres that too.

She also appears to like to get dressed up for special occasions, rocking a shirt and tie (and gender fluidity) when the media turned up to the embassy en mass after Sweden decided to drop the investigation against Assange.

What can we tell from her Twitter?

The cat appears to be hot on puns, politics and praising my human. And her 31,000 followers lap it up.

Bitcoin hits a bump – VICE News

More cryptomoney, more problems.

Technical glitches, competition, and Wall Street skepticism have walloped the value of bitcoins lately, a rare setback in the digital currencys otherwise steady rise.

The question now is whether the selloff will ultimately prove to be a temporary bout of growing pains or a more significant turning point in bitcoins evolution.

Bitcoin prices have approximately tripled this year, touching a monthly closing high above $3,000 on June 11. But theyve since fallen near $2,600, down more than 13 percent from the high, according to the cryptocurrency site CoinDesk.

Bitcoins woes started last week with a massive headache for traders as the popular bitcoin exchange Coinbase experienced an outage due to heavy volume. The incident highlighted how popular cryptocurrencies have become, with the global market now topping $100 billion. But it also renewed concerns about whether the ecosystem around bitcoin and its peers is mature and stable enough to truly challenge more traditional means of exchange issued by governments.

Coincidentally, the grandaddy of government-issued fiat currencies, the U.S. dollar, got a shot in the arm Wednesday when the Federal Reserves policy committee raised its key interest-rate target by a quarter percentage-point, to a range of 1 percent to 1.25 percent.

The Feds move was aimed at fighting inflation, but it will also effectively limit the supply of dollars moving through the global economy in the months ahead. That tends to support the greenbacks value against rivals, including digital upstarts like bitcoin.

The cryptocurrency market is also seeing an influx of new competitors, notably the Ethereum platform. Its currency, the ether, is already the second-most-popular cryptocurrency after bitcoin and is generally regarded as more flexible as a tool for building applications.

The ether also has taken a hit lately, off about 12 percent after hitting a monthly high over $400 last Monday. But that pullback has been slightly less than bitcoins, and the ethers rally for the year has been much steeper, up more than 40 times its 2016 year-end value.

In a note to clients last Monday, Goldman Sachs head of technical strategy Sheba Jafari warned that a number of signals in the bitcoin market are looking broadly heavy.

A few days later, Morgan Stanley analysts floated an idea thats perhaps even more unthinkable in the freewheeling cryptocurrency market that more regulation might be needed to help bitcoin and its peers realize their potential as actual transaction tools to conduct commerce.

For now, they still function more as playthings for speculative investors. And theyhave been selling.
