The Resilient Mainframer – Toolbox

Although much of the press and many non-mainframers see as mainframes as 50-year-old bits of kit running 50-year-old software, nothing could be further from the truth. If you were to take an expert mainframer from the year 2000 and drop them into a 2020 data center, there would be much that they did understand, but lots that would be completely new to them. Yes, there is still CICS, IMS, and Db2, but internally there are lots of differences. People can now access mainframes from their phone using Web services and Representational state transfer (REST). Theres this thing called cloud (which is a bit like the way mainframes have always worked). Theres edge computing. And theres a whole new way of working called Agile and DevOps. And theres a whole lot of new stuff that people talk about including Github, Jenkins, and Maven. What would they make of Docker and containers? And what is Zowe and why does open source software run on a mainframe?

And thats just scratching the surface. Far from being a sleeping giant that one day will disappear when all the applications are finally transferred off of it, the mainframe is a dynamic ultra-modern platform.

Its also the vendors that keep changing. Compuware is now part of BMC, which also recently acquired RSM Partners. Syncsort has changed its name to Precisely. In 2013, Syncsort acquired Circle Computer Group for its DL/2 product, and in 2015, it acquired William Data Systems for its network monitoring and security software. The big acquisition was last year when it bought the software and data business of Pitney Bowes. And, of course, CA became Broadcom. And there have been many other changes in the past 20 years.

After 50 plus years of success, we can say that the mainframe is pretty resilient. What we also find is that, with all these changes plus the Coronavirus outbreak, mainframers themselves need to be fairly resilient.

Resilience, in the psychological sense, is a persons ability to mentally or emotionally cope with a crisis or to return to pre-crisis status quickly. You can think of it as the ability to remain calm during crises/chaos and to move on from the incident without any long-term negative consequences. Resilience doesnt mean that a person isnt affected by whats going on around them, its just that they have developed psychological and behavioral capabilities to cope. People who have suffered major adversity or trauma in their lives commonly experience emotional pain and stress.

It used to be thought that some people had the characteristic or trait of resiliency and they were therefore better able to cope with difficult situations than people who didnt have that particular characteristic. Nowadays, theres a different idea. Resilience is now thought of as a process. So, youre faced with an adverse condition, how do you respond? It seems people generally react in one of three ways:

Erupt with anger Implode with overwhelming negative emotions, go numb, and become unable to react Simply become upset about the disruptive change.

It seems that resilient people choose the third option. The first two options lead to people rejecting coping methods, blaming others, and seeing themselves as victims. Negative emotions such as fear, anger, anxiety, distress, helplessness, and hopelessness decrease a persons ability to solve the problems they face and reduces their resiliency. A resilient person will adapt to the adversity and be able to cope.

So, what characteristics would a resilient mainframer have? Research suggests they would have:

The ability to make realistic plans and be able to take the steps necessary to follow through with them Confidence in their strengths and abilities Communication and problem-solving skills The ability to manage strong impulses and feelings.

There also seems to be a strong link between positive emotions and resilience. Research has found that maintaining positive emotions while facing adversity promotes flexibility in thinking and problem solving. Positive emotions help a person to recover from stressful experiences and encounters.

People who tend to approach problems with cognitive reappraisal, humor, optimism, and goal-directed problem-focused coping seem to strengthen their resistance to stress.

A study found six main predictors of resilience among high achieving professionals. They were: positive and proactive personality, experience and learning, sense of control, flexibility and adaptability, balance and perspective, and perceived social support. These high achievers also engaged in many activities unrelated to their work such as hobbies, exercising, and organizing meet-ups with friends and loved ones.

Lots of studies show that the primary factor for the development of resilience is social support, ie how much access they have to, and use they make of, strong ties to other individuals who are similar to them. Other factors associated with resilience include: the capacity to make realistic plans, having self-confidence and a positive self-image, developing communications skills, and the capacity to manage strong feelings and impulses. Forgiveness also seems to increase resilience.

The American Psychological Association suggests 10 Ways to Build Resilience, which are to:

1. Maintain good relationships with close family members, friends, and others.2. Avoid seeing crises or stressful events as unbearable problems.3. Accept circumstances that cannot be changed.4. Develop realistic goals and move towards them.5. Take decisive actions in adverse situations.6. Look for opportunities of self-discovery after a struggle with loss.7. Develop self-confidence.8. Keep a long-term perspective and consider the stressful event in a broader context.9. Maintain a hopeful outlook, expecting good things and visualizing what is wished.10. Take care of ones mind and body, exercising regularly, paying attention to ones own needs and feelings.

So, you work in an industry that is not known for change, but which is continually updating itself and incorporating the best technologies from other platforms. Then there are continual security issues. Of course, the mainframe is taking great strides to protect data and applications from hackers. Thats data at rest, data in motion, and data in use. Security by obscurity used to work because hackers could get a quicker return by focusing on distributed systems, but these days, mainframes are linked to mobile, cloud, edge, and any other kind of computing there is. Plus, it is also accessible using open source tools (which hackers are very familiar with). In addition to these bad actors, sites need to be aware that data and applications might get corrupted by human error and trusted staff being coerced to perform bad acts. So, something needs to be in place to speedily identify when this happens. Plus, people without mainframe experience are always pushing management to get all the data off mainframes and into the cloud or on distributed systems.

Mainframers need to be resilient at work, and, with Covid-19, they need to be resilient away from work. I hope some of the suggestions here help.

Products

The firm offers a number of products including cryptocurrencies, community currencies and the token economy and asset tokenisation.

Belajouza said cryptocurrency has a bright future, especially in the financial inclusion aspect and low-fees fund transfers.

To offer the community currencies product, Sqoin partnered with Coinsence, another start-up that aims to empower people with community crypto tokens.Under the token economy and asset tokenisation, Belajouza said that it is a future proof concept, with a roadmap for the product, VERSA a blockchain based internal payment system that considerably reduces fees for businesses.

Challenges

He, however, said the products are faced with a challenge of slow adoption as people are not yet familiar with neither the concept nor the technology.Additionally, he said the regulatory environment of cryptocurrencies is also still a grey zone yet tokens are not regulated at all.

It should be noted that transactions on this platform are made over the internet and there is no central authority that processes transactions. Users are anonymous and identified only by their virtual identities.

He also added that while they need strong partners to co-exist in their dreamy market so as to facilitate geo-scaling, the partners are not easy to come by.

Despite the challenges, there are also immense opportunities and one of them is the regulatory sandboxes, which Belajouza said is opening Tunisia and other North African countries to innovate and test their products on the market before being rolled out. He, however, noted that they are working closely with the central bank to define a scope.

The other opportunity is inherent in the tech they are using; Belajouza said decentralisation is on-going and they are part of it, adding that financial inclusion is becoming more important.

40 days 40 FinTechs

Sqoin Blockchain and Cryptocurrency is among the firms participating in the 40-days-40 FinTechs initiative, which is organised by HiPipo under its Include EveryOne program, in partnership with Crosslake Tech, ModusBox and Mojaloop Foundation.

The initiative seeks to enable FinTechs to innovate solutions that facilitate cross-network financial transactions at minimal risks to enhance access to financial services.

Running for 40 days, the project will see the participating 40 FinTechs acquire interoperable development skills to improve access to financial services, using the Mojaloop open source software.

Belajouza commended HiPipo for the initiative, saying that they want to master Mojaloop for use in crypto and tokens so as to bridge the gap with other stakeholder in the transaction loop.After studying the Mojaloop software potential, we found it a great way to address global problems, and a great technical starting point to grow and talk to key accounts for adoption, he said.

For equality, Belajouza said Sqoin believes in gender equity, noting that more than half of their team are women. He added that being a woman is an asset to integrate their team.

In terms of project, we are working with conscience under the SDG label empowering women on a use case with community currencies for women, he said.

Innocent Kawooya, the HiPipo CEO thanked Sqoin for playing a major role in helping the world achieve full financial inclusion soon, rather than later. Enterprises are in the middle of digital transformation, with demand for agile business models and customer-centric services. This in turn raises the demand and necessity for innovative, responsive and low cost software products. Open source therefore is making its way from high tech firms and startups to the enterprises.

Open source gives CIOs architectural control by avoiding vendor lock-in, this helps create a digital backbone to deploy hybrid cloud environments and new operating models while leveraging their existing IT infrastructure and applications seamlessly.

Cost center to innovation essential

According to Forrester data, a third of global enterprise infrastructure decision makers see expanding the use of open source as a critical or high priority.

Open source technology is strategically crucial as part of the enterprise software strategy especially because it helps drive a collaborative approach to innovation as well as having a significant impact in domains like artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, etc, says Harnath Babu, CIO, KPMG.

More than 50 percent of the Fortune 100 use OpenStack, and over 50 percent of the Fortune 500 use Cloud Foundry, states Danny Mu, Principal Analyst, Forrester. From the operating system to the latest responsive design framework, many open source technologies are stable and ready for prime time. Open source solutions offer rapidly evolving ecosystems, credibility for digital startups through strong communities, easier customization and disposability, said Mu.

Vetting open source projects

Open source is a development model, not a business model. Enterprise customers need products, not projects and its incumbent on vendors to know the difference.

Too often, we see open source companies who dont understand the difference between projects and products. In a rush to deliver the latest and greatest innovations, as packaged software or public cloud services, these companies end up delivering solutions that lack the stability, reliability, scalability, compatibility and all the other non-functional requirements that enterprise customers rely on to run their mission-critical applications, said Marshal Correia, Vice President and General Manager, India, South Asia at Red Hat.

While the motivation of companies to sponsor an open source project might be for marketing and branding or development recruitment purposes, maintaining a consistent revenue stream is a struggle.

Atul Mangla, VP-Technology, Digit Insurance agrees with the market sentiment of the non-evolution of OS sans active sponsor and developer community. Young organizations should choose projects which are well established in the market and being used by multiple other companies whereas big organizations can sponsor new open source projects and reap the benefits of crowdsourcing of ideas and skills, he said.

And as sponsorship is required from business as it's one of the biggest bets for them, CIOs also need to create comfort with the businesses by developing skill sets, continuously evolving the platform as well as looking for support options through subscription models, opined Babu.

Community participation

One of the best ways to mitigate the risks associated with open source projects is to ensure community participation. Organizations primary focus should remain on building great offerings with great customer experience. However, once the initial stage is passed, it is a good time for an organization to start contributing to open source communities of its choice.

This helps in not only giving back to projects/communities where you gained in the past, but also it fuels the next level of innovation within the organization, says Mangla.

What customers pay for is the support to help manage lifecycle management and interoperability, opines Correia. "If you have made any changes or additions to the code, you need to share that knowledge and intelligence back with the community," he says.

The source code for open source software is free. However that does not necessarily mean that executable software is given away for free. For instance, the source code for Red Hat Enterprise Linux is freely available to anyone, but converting that source code into runnable code requires expertise, time, and servers, Correia says.

Harnath Babu believes that as enterprises leverage on the innovation driven by open source communities, it is only fair to give back with code improvements and enhancements. CIOs can have a clear-cut strategy to Code Commit back to the communities to ensure that the software gets enriched as well as other enterprises can leverage on it to solve business problems, he concludes.

Nokia and AT&T run successful trial of the RAN Intelligent Controller over commercial 5G

Espoo, Finland Nokia and AT&T today announced a successful limited live trial of the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) over AT&Ts commercial 5G mmWave network in New York City. Once fully implemented into the network, the RIC platform will enable increased network optimization capabilities through policy-guided, closed loop automation.

Last year, AT&T and Nokia announced their collaboration to co-develop the RIC software platform, in alignment with the O-RAN Alliance target architecture, to accelerate the creation of open source software for the 5G RAN. The intent is to create open interfaces and an open ecosystem of interoperable components that will enable rapid, flexible service deployments and programmability within the RAN. The RIC software is available at the O-RAN Software Community.

For the recent trial, AT&T and Nokia ran a series of external applications, called xApps, at the edge of AT&Ts live 5G mmWave network on an Akraino-based Open Cloud Platform. The xApps used in the trial were designed to improve spectrum efficiency, as well as offer geographical and use case-based customization and rapid feature onboarding.

Ultimately, the trial achieved its test goals. Both companies tested the RAN E2 interface and xApp management and control, collected live network data using the Measurement Campaign xApp, the neighbor relation management using Automated Neighbor Relation (ANR) xApp, and tested RAN control via the Admission Control xApp all with zero interruption to the live commercial network.

Googles launch of Spark 3 and Hadoop 3 on its latest Dataproc 2.0 adds to the increasing sophistication of the open source environments and also continues to empower its enterprise customers to focus more on data workloads rather than infrastructure.

What is Dataproc?

Google Cloud Dataproc uses image versions to bundle together operating systems, big data components, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) connectors into a single package which is further deployed on a cluster. Since the images are updated regularly with new features and enhancements, the latest Dataproc image version 2.0 (currently in preview mode) offers a step function increase over the previous image versions and runs the latest iterations of Apache Spark and Hadoop clusters.

Exploring Spark and Hadoop

It is difficult for a single computer to process petabytes of data, thus there is a growing need for a cluster of machines for data processing. But the tricky question is how do these cluster machines work to solve the data analytics process? Meet Spark and Hadoop.

Developed by Apache Software Foundation, like Hadoop, Spark is an open-source, distributed, parallel data processing framework that manages big data and machine learning applications in scalable clusters of computer servers. It offers a set of libraries in Java, Scala, and Python languages and can process data from data repositories such as the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), NoSQL databases, and Apache Hive.

This has partly been because of its speed. Additionally, Spark has proven itself to be highly suited to machine learning applications."

Spark 3, the latest iteration of Apache Spark is currently in preview mode and the highlight of the new release is its performance optimization. Spark 3 will formulate end-to-end machine learning pipelines (data ingest, model training, and visualization) at a faster pace and reduced infrastructure costs. With Spark 3, data engineers can now perform adaptive queries, data pruning techniques (eliminating historical information from the database), and GPU acceleration. Moreover, the new Spark 3 has taken down a few functionalities such as Resilient Distributed Datasets, GraphX, and Python 2.7.

Additionally, the Hadoop 3 has exciting features such as native support for GPUs in the Yet Another Resource Negotiator (YARN) scheduler and YARN containerization. Christopher Crosbie, Product Manager, and Igor Dvorzhak, Software Engineer at Google Cloud explain, "In cloud-based deployments of Hadoop, there tends to be less reliance on Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and YARN. HDFS storage will be substituted for Cloud Storage in most situations. YARN is still used for scheduling resources within a cluster, but in the cloud, Hadoop customers start to think about job and resource management at the cluster or VM level. Dataproc offers job-scoped clusters that are right-sized for the task at hand instead of being limited to just configuring a single clusters YARN queues with complex workload management policies."

Furthermore, the latest Dataproc image version 2.0 has modified the existing configuration settings to optimize OSS software and upgraded software and shared libraries to avoid runtime incompatibilities.

Wing Made History in Drone Delivery. That’s Not All They Do: Wing’s OpenSky UTM Solutions – DroneLife

Google spin-off Wing has made history in drone delivery. As the first recipient of a Part 135 certificate to operate as a commercial drone airline in the U.S., theyve brought drone delivery out of the realm of emergencies and made it available to consumers: delivering local food, products, drugstore supplies and even library books to the doorsteps of suburban homes.

Throughout the process of negotiating with aviation authorities around the world, Wing has acquired a deep understanding of what it takes to integrate commercial drone flights into the skies. The company has gathered data on more than 100,000 flights; theyve received feedback from customers and surrounding communities; and theyve performed delivery operations safely and accurately. In Australia, Finland, and the U.S., thousands of customers have used the service over the last two years.

All of that experience has contributed to the development of their other, less-well known to the public but no less important, offering: OpenSky, Wings unmanned traffic management (UTM) solutions. A version of OpenSky available to consumers launched last year in Australia: OpenSky is what Wing uses to manage their drone delivery programs. The system provides complex flight planning mechanisms, deconfliction, and communication with airspace authorities.

Reinaldo Negron is Wings Head of UTM, and co-president of the Global UTM Association (GUTMA.) Negron joined Wing in 2016, when UTM was still a concept being discussed with NASA, a long way from being a real solution used to support a consumer drone delivery program. Its been really exciting to go from paper to real life, says Negron.

Open Skies for All

Wing has taken a unique and open approach to developing UTM: they believe there is room for and a need for multiple suppliers.We take a collaborative approach, says Negron. We dont think there is one system that applies for every type of flight, for every application we think it will take an ecosystem to help this entire industry take off.

At the heart of the approach is an understanding that the drone industry includes a vast array of different operations: drone delivery may need a different type of system than inspection drones do, recreational flyers have different requirements than commercial drone operators. We think that this federated approach, involving private industry, is necessary, Negron explains. It would be too difficult for one federally funded system to develop as quickly as needed to support all types of operations. Thats why were so supportive of this ecosystem approach.

Wing has been involved with GUTMA and standards development in the U.S. and around the world: theyve worked with NASA UTM testing; as part of the low altitude authorization and notification (LAANC) project; and most recently, as part of the Remote ID for drones (RID) cohort. Weve been able to bring to real life the collaboration with others weve flown not just Wing drones, but DJI drones and other types, says Negron.

InterUSS: Open Source for Aviation

We want to make sure we are all safe and deconflicted in our access to the sky, he explains. We also support open source software: to allow all UTM companies to plug and play together.

The open source software is calledInterUSS. InterUSS is the answer to the question of how Wings OpenSky will communicate with, for example, AirMap; in order to allow operators using both systems to share information for deconfliction.

Seeing open source come to aviation is a really exciting step it makes sure we can have a broad and diverse ecosystem of providers, says Negron. Uber, AirMap, Swiss regulators, and others are using the software, which is now part of the LINUX foundation.

OpenSky will expand as standards are developed, rules are passed, and the framework for a collaborative UTM ecosystem comes together.OpenSky is more of a suite of capabilities we can imagine multiple products coming down the pike, says Negron.

The goal here is to make compliance as easy as possible for the most operators, says Lia Reich, Wings Senior Communications Specialist. We and other companies are making these more broadly available to make sure the industry can grow.
