Britain wants a ‘way out’ of the Julian Assange standoff, says Ecuador – The Guardian

Britain is interested in finding a solution to the standoff that has led to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange being holed up in Ecuadors London embassy for five years, the foreign minister of the South American country has said.

In May, Sweden dropped an investigation into rape allegations that led Assange, 45, to seek asylum in the embassy in 2012, but British police said he would still be arrested if he left the building.

The United Kingdom wants a way out, but evidently that is in the hands of the UK justice system, they have their procedures, their ways, the minister, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, told reporters on Thursday. This opening has been there, and we are working on it.

A British court issued an arrest warrant for Assange when he failed to surrender to the court on 29 June, 2012, and the Metropolitan Police Service is compelled to execute that warrant, the London police said in May.

Assange, who denies the rape allegations, fears being handed over to the United States to face prosecution over WikiLeaks publication of thousands of classified military and diplomatic documents in one of the largest information leaks in US history.

Bravery, courage, strength why Pamela Anderson thinks that Julian Assange is sexy – The Guardian

Beach buddies: Julian Assange and Pamela Anderson. Composite: Getty Images/Guardian Design

What is the sexiest quality in a man?asks Pamela Anderson in a blog which starts like a 90s fragrance advert, but which you know will end in the conclusion that there is nothing hotter than skipping bail over rape allegations.

Without getting overly Brut Aquatonic about it all, the essence of man isapparently distilled in Pamelas gentleman friend Julian Assange, to whom the erstwhile Baywatch star is increasingly moved to write or quote poetry. This weeks post was no exception, addressing Assange directly with William Ernest Henleys stiff-upper-lip anthem Invictus, and ending with the words I love you. But before we got to that, there was a digression which took in sex appeal, Pamelas sexy new Saint-Tropez vegan restaurant, and the offer to Emmanuel Macron of a bilateral summit.

First, lets talk about sex appeal. Surely the sexiest qualities in a man are bravery and courage, explains Pamela. Sexiness in a man is showing strength. For whatever reason, Diesel has yet to set one of its Only the Brave mens fragrance adverts in an embassy hidey-hole, where the protagonist is shown skewing elections to a dubstep soundtrack. Maybe Diesel feels thats more of aDiorHomme look.

Either way, Pamela encourages youto think a lot harder about what sexual allure is. And unless you are totally frigid, you need to understand that it ends in a Trump White House. As the former Dancing on Ice contestant puts it: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is no more. The Obama administration is gone. Julian won, and we allbenefited from this. He took on the Leviathan and won. That is sexy.

Mmm. Lost in Showbiz always feels that these sexier-than-thou takes risk making those who spout them a hostage to fortune. It cant help but recall a similar line being taken by Anne Hathaway, who once declared: One ofthe most untouted aphrodisiacs in the world is charity work. Seriously, you want a girl to be impressed, vaccinate some kids, build a house. This was a reference to Annes chap at the time, with whom she lived in a Trump Tower apartment where one wardrobe contained monsignor robes, which she declined to treat as an alarmbell. Her subsequently jailed fiance told her he was the chief financial officer of the Vatican, yet heturned out how to put this sparsely? not to be.

And so too with Julian, whose invaluable sexywork in getting Donald Trump elected may yet turn out to be not the universal win for humankind it currently appears. But, you know, its still early days. Even so, Pamela does offer the Assange camps most explicit quid pro quo reference yet, stating pointedly: President Trump, who benefited from WikiLeaks publication, has not stood up for Julians freedom to publish. Not sexy. Unsexy.Bad!

As for other world leaders, the one on whom she appears to be pinning her most concerted hopes is Emmanuel Macron. Addressing the new French president directly, the Baywatch star says: As a resident of France, my adopted home, I would like to meet with you and discuss Julians situation. I am opening a new vegan restaurant inFrance in July, and I would like to extend my invitation to the new president and his first lady. Join me on the day I open the doors, and we will sit and eat good food and discuss what can be done for Julian. France could display its strength, and so could you, if you give Julian asylum. My feeling isthat Macron would need to see the la carte options as well as the set menu before he commits, but no doubttime will show.

For Theresa May, alas, there is not so much as the offer of an amuse-bouche. Britains beleaguered prime minister isdismissed as someone who kept him imprisoned for five years now. Assuming he was a Baywatch fan, though, things are looking much better for the Labour partys leader. I am reaching out to Jeremy Corbyn, announces Pamela, who could and should be the next prime minister. Then what? Corbyn should give Assange safe passage and compensation. Compensation for skipping bail sounds like a fun policy toscale but theres more. When you come to power, she warns the Labour leader, you must rehabilitate the UKs reputation in Latin America!

If all that fails, Pamela has another iron in the fire. I will write a love letter to China I am sure China can be a symbol of peace and strength in the world. To everyone else, she has stark instructions: Stop escalating cyberwars. Stop geopolitical sabre-rattling. Stop interfering in elections. Stop torturing animals and eating them. Stop writing speeches on goatskin. Letting Julian gofree would change everything.

So there you go. It couldnt be simpler. How much longer is the social scene going to be denied the liberation of this most 21st-century of It-couples?

(CNN) - Pamela Anderson cares a great deal about both the vegan lifestyle and Julian Assange.

So much so that she is trying to use one to help the other.

The "Baywatch" star is opening a pop-up vegan restaurant in the South of France in July.

Le Table du Marche will be open for 50 nights only in Saint-Tropez beginning on July 4, according to an announcement published on Monday on a site for Anderson's foundation.

"Born of the meeting between Chef Christophe Leroy and international star Pamela Anderson, the concept of this restaurant has become self-evident: festive, glamorous and Vegan," the announcement reads.

The restaurant will feature a "sensual atmosphere."

Anderson already has a few guests in mind whom she would like to entertain.

In a post titled "Why My Heart Stands With Julian," Anderson writes of wanting to meet with new French president, Emmanuel Macron, and his wife Brigitte Trogneux to discuss her friend, Julian Assange.

"I am opening a new vegan restaurant in France in July, and I would like to extend my invitation to the new President and his First Lady," Anderson wrote over the weekend. "Join me on the day I open the doors, and we will sit and eat good food and discuss what can be done for Julian. France could display its strength, and so could you, if you give Julian asylum."

Assange has been living at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London for more than four years. He took refuge there after Swedish prosecutors issued a warrant for him in August 2010 based on allegations of sexual assault by two female WikiLeaks volunteers in the country.

His relationship with Anderson has become the subject of much chatter and speculation as she's visited Assange multiple times and written extensively about him on her site.

In her plea to Macron for help, Anderson kicked off the post with "No matter where I am, I can't forget this man isolated in the Ecuadorian Embassy."

"Thinking of Julian makes me wonder, what is the sexiest quality in a man," she wrote. "Surely the sexiest qualities in a man are bravery and courage. Sexiness in a man is showing strength. Having convictions and having the courage to stand by them."

An Analysis of the Julian Assange Case – International Policy Digest – International Policy Digest (press release) (blog)

Julian Assanges name is known to many, but the story behind his fame is more complicated than you might guess. You likely know Assange as the founder of WikiLeaks, an organization committed to blowing the whistle on political wrongdoings.

The documents made public by Assange and WikiLeaks have proven consistently inconvenient and embarrassing for the political establishment, but not, thus far, as embarrassing as the allegations against Assange himself. A years-long tussle with the law, which required him to huddle in foreign embassies for roughly the last seven years, has diminished Assanges and WikiLeaks credibility considerably across the world.

So, whats he accused of? Who accused him? And who might have a vested interested in discrediting him?

The case against Assange

The Assange case goes back to August 2010, when two women arrived together at a Swedish police department and gave an account that resulted in a warrant for Assanges arrest. The charge was suspected rape.

The accounts are available for all to read. They involve Assange allegedly approaching these two women, sometimes less than fully clothed, to petition them for sex. They involve Assange allegedly forcing himself on them, possibly while one of them was sleeping, possibly without a condom or possibly with a condom he knew was torn.

If youve ever heard Assange speak to the public or read anything hes written, you know he does come across as thoughtful, measured and deeply rational. You might have a strong negative reaction to his message, but that might be politics talking not the reasoned weighing of evidence.

Its likely that nobody reading this knows Assange nor these women personally or was involved in the investigation. Heres what we know:

The initial warrant was promptly canceled just days after it was brought. Assange himself insisted the accounts were without basis and Eva Finne, chief prosecutor at the time, agreed that she didnt believe there was reason to suspect rape. Assanges defense team had a few key points to make, which are worth mentioning here:

Maintaining a healthy skepticism in a case as complicated and contentious as this one, with crimes as allegedly awful as these, is important. But, if youre following along, that last assertion by Assanges defense team is perhaps the most damaging.

If one of his accusers is on record as literally laughing off one of the charges she helped bring against him, any other testimony she may have given can possibly be considered suspect. This is all very suspect testimony. And the fact that political motivations might be in play here make this case even more frustrating and perplexing.

What has Assange leaked, and where is he today?

In Mid-May of 2017, prosecutors in Sweden announced to the public that they were finally dropping any existing warrants for Assanges arrest as well as their attempts to extradite him. Its pretty clear this isnt the end of his legal troubles, but its a notable step forward for a man who spent years hunkered down in foreign embassies.

The conversation isnt complete without calling attention to some of the most significant contributions WikiLeaks has made to the political public discourse.

Other WikiLeaks dispatches have proven even more controversial. In 2009, the organization released emails sent and received by climate scientists over 13 years, which skeptics seized upon as evidence that scientists were misleading the public over manmade climate change.

Most who dug into the issue indicated the release of the emails showed little more than poor email etiquette and changed nothing about the scientific consensus.

Most recently, WikiLeaks released nearly 9,000 documents detailing how the U.S. built the largest and most invasive surveillance infrastructure in history and then turned it against the American people. You may know this batch of leaks asVault.

WikiLeaks also severely damaged the reputation of the Democratic Party at an inconvenient moment in our history by releasing thousands of internal emails revealing impropriate behavior ranging from feeding questions to preferred candidates at debates to plotting regime change.

As you can see, WikiLeaks is a disruptive political force by any measure and regularly infuriates people all over the political spectrum. No matter what you might think or feel about the allegations against Assange himself, this is what it looks like when an organization favors transparency in government first and specific political agendas second.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange set for ‘imminent meeting’ with British officials – Express.co.uk

Mr Assange, 45, was due to make a hotly awaited announcement from the balcony of the Ecuadorian embassy in west London at lunchtime.

But the speech, which was meant to mark the fifth anniversary of his arrival at the building, was deferred after advice from his legal team.

The decision was made following the agreement of an "imminent meeting" with UK officials.

There is no legal reason to keep Julian here

Melinda Taylor

Melinda Taylor, of Mr Assange's legal team, said: "We have been given confirmation that there will be a meeting with the British authorities.

"We hope that will be soon. We don't want to prejudice that meeting because we need this impasse to be resolved.

"There is no legal reason to keep Julian here."

A spokesperson added: "Mr Assange's legal team remain optimistic that a satisfactory outcome can be found which respects the British legal process and restores Mr Assange's freedom and dignity."

It is believed that Julian Assange chooses to live in Sweden because the country's media laws are among the world's most protective for journalists

Sweden's Director of Public Prosecution last month discontinued the investigation against Mr Assange over accusations of rape.

But Scotland Yard said the Australian whistleblower would still be arrested if he leaves the embassy.

He first claimed asylum in the building in June 2012 to avoid facing trial in the US over Wikileaks' disclosure of top-secret military documents.

But in a defiant statement on the embassy's steps, Mr Assange warned Britain: "The proper war is just commencing."

He hailed the dropping of charges against him as an "important victory" and a "vindication" but raged against the "injustices" he has faced.

He added: "Seven years without charge while my children grew up without me. That is not something I can forgive or forget."
