Oliver Stone’s ‘Snowden’ with Joseph Gordon-Levitt will hit U.S. theaters on Christmas

Oliver Stones Snowden, which tells the story of NSA whistelblower Edward Snowden, will get a Christmas release in the U.S.

Variety broke the news of the biopics release. Open Road is handling U.S. sales, while Wild Bunch will manage sales internationally.

Snowden will follow the titular whistleblower in his endeavor to leak secrets about the National Security Agency. Snowden was charged with violating the Espionage Act in 2013 and had his passport revoked. Last year, he gained temporary asylum status in Russia.

Stone co-wrote the film with Kieran Fitzgerald. The script is largely based off of Time of the Octopus by Snowdens Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena and The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the Worlds Most Wanted Man by journalist Luke Harding.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt leads the cast as Snowden. The rest of the cast is filled out by Shailene Woodley, Tom Wilkinson, Melissa Leo and Zachary Quinto. Joely Richardson, Timothy Olyphant and Rhys Ifans have also come aboard during the past week.

The film recently began shooting in Munich and will continue until the middle of May.
