2 solid video releases star Daniel (wait, who?) Bruhl

New and notable on DVD this week:

Rush (Rated R for sexual content, nudity, language, some disturbing images and brief drug use; Universal, $29.98)

Who is Daniel Bruhl and why are people saying such nice things about him? The answer becomes evident this week as hes featured in two top DVD releases. In Rush, he plays the methodical if socially awkward race car driver Niki Lauda, who was locked in a Formula 1 racing competition with the British playboy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) in 1976. Director Ron Howard delivers some taut race footage, but its the chemistry and differences between the men and Bruhls oddball likability that sells the movie. GRADE: B

The Fifth Estate (Rated R for language and some violence; Touchstone, $29.99)

This time out Bruhl is the grounded one; his more eccentric and possibly visionary counterpart is Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch). Together they transform, and challenge the ethical boundaries of, journalism by releasing information on the Internet through Wikileaks. Director Bill Condon lays out the pluses and minuses of unedited free speech nicely; and if Assange comes across as an egomaniac, hes also portrayed as brilliant and brave. GRADE: B

NSA surveillance revelations sour German perception of Obama

JUDY WOODRUFF: As Secretary of State John Kerry prepares for his visit to Germany tomorrow, chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Warner takes another look at the countrys outrage over U.S. surveillance programs.

Tonight, she talks to a rising star in German politics, who tells her that many in his country are disappointed with the American president, who at one time spurred so much hope.

MARGARET WARNER: German Chancellor Angela Merkel yesterday again criticized Washington for its electronic surveillance of German citizens, including herself.

CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL, Germany (through translator): A program where everything that is technically possible has been done, it harms trust. In the end, there will be less, not more security.

MARGARET WARNER: Her transatlantic coordinator is 34-year-old parliamentarian Philipp Missfelder. Though their center-right party has long stood by the U.S./German alliance, hes been a blunt critic of NSA surveillance and is now the point man dealing with Washington on tough issues facing the two allies.

We spoke this morning in the parliamentary office building in Berlin.

Philipp Missfelder, thank you for having us. Congratulations on your new job.

PHILIPP MISSFELDER, German Coordinator for Transatlantic Cooperation: Thank you very much.

MARGARET WARNER: In her speech yesterday, Chancellor Merkel said, not only was NSA spying in Germany undermining trust between our countries, but that would actually undermine security. Does that undermine the kind of cooperation against global threats, say, terrorism? Is Germany cooperating less with the United States now as a result of this?

PHILIPP MISSFELDER: No, of course not.

New AlertBoot Encryption Reports Make Dental HIPAA Compliance Easier

Las Vegas, Nevada (PRWEB) January 31, 2014

AlertBoot, a leading provider of mobile device management and managed full disk encryption services, has introduced a new reporting engine that makes it easy to prove compliance with HIPAA Security Rule requirements for computing devices that are used by dentists, including laptop computers, desktop computers, and smart devices like smartphone and tablets.

"Under HIPAA and the patient data Breach Notification Rule, the use of encryption is the only way to gain safe harbor if patient data is lost or stolen," noted Tim Maliyil, founder and CEO of AlertBoot. "HIPAA defers to NIST on the specific requirements for encryption technology. There is also a requirement to keep accurate records. Using encryption is important, but so is the ability to prove that it was used when a device is stolen."

While much has been publicized about the importance of encryption under HIPAA such as the use of laptop full disk encryption on portable computers or desktop computers equally important is demonstrating that a device was encrypted if it ends up missing. In addition, dentists that are covered under HIPAA must take into account NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) requirements involving encryption key length and data accessibility.

Small and medium-sized dental practices, which usually do not maintain an in-house IT staff, may find computer encryption to be complex and inapproachable. Outside IT services can relieve some of the burden, but only if the contracted firm is familiar with HIPAA-related issues. If relying on outside consultants, there are a number of aspects that dental practices should inquire about when selecting data security services.

First, ascertain if the use of encryption is documented in a failsafe manner. Encryption protects patients by ensuring that PHI doesn't fall in the wrong hands. Proof of encryption protects you from HIPAA. The integrated reporting found in AlertBoot easily provides documented proof of encryption.

Second, HIPAA has requirements regarding data integrity. Information on computers can become corrupted, requiring data recovery operations. In such instances, a copy of the encryption key must be produced. AlertBoot automatically backs up encryption keys so that information is not inadvertently lost.

Last but not least, there are the basic technical requirements, such as using an encryption algorithm that equals or exceeds AES-128 and is without known weaknesses (prevented by using solutions validated by NIST. Ask if a NIST certificate is available). The AlertBoot solution uses NIST-validated full disk encryption.

In addition, there are a number of advantages to using AlertBoot:

Libreoffice 4.2 challenges Microsoft Office with improved Windows integration

OPEN SOURCE OFFICE SUITE Libreoffice 4.2 is out and is a major upgrade release.

The popular alternative to Microsoft Office has been retooled to increase compatibility with that expensive proprietary productivity applications suite, including compatibility with Visio and Publisher files.

In addition to a much improved formula process for its spreadsheet application, Libreoffice 4.2 also includes a new startup screen and improved round trip compatibility for newer formats such as .docx.

Java accessibility features are being phased out in favour of the IBM IAccessibility2 package, which will supercede the Java version in future editions.

iOS users can take advantage of the Impress Remote Control feature that allows users to control presentations from their smartphones. This feature has been available on Android for some time but now Apple fans can use it too.

Libreoffice claims that this is the biggest recoding of its office suite yet and says that it now offers better integration with Windows 7 and Windows 8, with documents grouped on the taskbar and quickview thumbnails.

The news comes after UK cabinet minister Francis Maude recently announced that Parliament will move towards using open source software for its documents, and said that interoperability improvements such as those Libreoffice has introduced will be key to ensuring that all areas of government communicate a lot more effectively than they do right now.

Libreoffice has also made contributing to continued development of the open source office suite even easier with a new code submission and review portal known as Gerrit.

Libreoffice 4.2 is available to download now.
