Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said on Saturday that he decided to grant political asylum to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on 2012 because his life was in risk. <\/p>\n
During his weeklyreport, Correa said that Assange didnt have the basic guarantees for a fair trial. His life was in danger. <\/p>\n
Assange has been living in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since June 19th, when he was grantedpoliticalasylum inthe embassy.Assange's political asylumcaused a diplomaticcrisis between the UK and Ecuador. <\/p>\n
Assange was accused of rape in Sweden,but he said that it was just a political play to extradite him to the U.S., where he could have received the death penalty. <\/p>\n
There was the threat that the U.S. judged him under the anti terrorist law, which can lead to death penalty said Correa. <\/p>\n
Last Monday, Ecuadors Foreign Minister, Ricardo Patino, reassured that Assanges would continue to receive asylum, and said that Ecuador is willing to find a solution for this problem along with British and Swedish governments. <\/p>\n
