What Is Shadow Banning & Why Are TikTokers Complaining …

Provided by Refinery29

If you spend enough time on any of TikToks subkingdoms (except for Straight TikTok) youll likely come across a users desperate plea to have a post boosted to remedy the devastating effects of a recent shadow ban. Users as big as fake cult-leader Melissa Ong (@chunkysdead) have pleaded their case to their followers, at least the ones that find their videos.

There are almost 300 million videos hashtagged #shadowbanned on TikTok. Most recently, shadow banning made headlines when Black TikTokers organized Blackout Tuesday on May 19, to protest what they claimed was TikToks suppression of pro-Black political content. As Refinery29 previously reported, TikTok has denied claims of shadow banning, but still apologized to Black creators for the hashtag glitch, and has since taken measures to make Black creators feel more supported and able to work with the platform to enact change.

The shadow banning claims, both collected by Refinery29 and shared on TikTok, tend to describe similar patterns. Users views, likes, and comments arent reflective of the size of their following. Or people will suddenly experience a steep drop in engagement that will persist until the video that triggered it is removed or edited. Sometimes videos get taken down without any explanation. Its also known as ghosting or stealth-banning.

Dill (@dillyonce) is a 25-year-old TikToker based out of Boston. She says shes never sworn in her videos or been cited for any violations, yet her videos get taken down regularly. For example, I was in Bali on vacation at this beautiful villa and I was recording a TikTok pretending to be the first Black LGBT+ contestant for the Bachelorette in Paradise, she told Refinery29 over email. The video lacked profanity, vulgarity, and music plagiarism yet upon multiple uploads they were all removed for reasons I still dont understand; its been very frustrating to be the victim of shadowbanning.

The simplest definition for shadow ban is the removal or suppression of content without the platform notifying the user that their content is in violation of any community guidelines or usage rules. In other words, its when a platform takes down or suppresses your content without giving you formal notice. Platform users tend to regularly suspect shadow banning, but it is rarely proven.

In mid-March, an investigation by The Intercept unearthed an internal document that confirmed TikTok once, instructed moderators to suppress posts created by users deemed too ugly, poor, or disabled for the platform. This is certainly the most damning example of TikToks shadow banning practices. But the platform told The Intercept that many of the guidelines outlined in the article are, are either no longer in use, or in some cases appear to never have been in place, and that they were a misguided effort to prevent bullying. Since then, TikTok has been sharing insights into how content is circulated, like this blog post on how the For You page works.

However, it would be unfair to pin a decades-old pattern that is common in platform moderation on the app du jour, which just so happens to be based out of the country Trump has labeled public enemy number one. Every major platform, including Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, and Craigslist have all been accused of shadow banning. Most recently, YouTuber Gaby Hana made headlines with her claims of being shadow banned on YouTube. Its a practice almost as old as the internet itself, originally intended to drive undesirable users, like spammers, off a given platform. Its also known as ghosting or stealth-banning. In theory, shadow bannings only productive application is when it comes to dealing with spam, to convince spammers to abandon a platform and leave its users alone.

In 2018, Republicans and conservatives cried shadow banarguingsocial media platforms were out to get them, using aVice News storythat said thatTwitter limited the visibility of Republicans. (Shortly after, Twitterreleased a statementexplaining that abughad affected not just Republicans, but many users for a short period of time before it was fixed.) But that didnt keep Donald Trump from hopping on the bandwagon.

The fires of suspicion were stoked once again after a Twitter hack that affected the likes of Elon Musk and Bill Gates. In reporting the hack,Motherboard shared screenshotsthat showed how the hack was executed. The screenshot showed how, internally, Twitter tags certain accounts asTrend Blacklist or Search Blacklistto mark accounts that have violated community guidelines and have been restricted from appearing in trending pages and searches, respectively. Like in 2018, Trump supporters took this as proof that Twitter is shadow banning them, but as Motherboard puts it: VICEs traffic tools show tweets by conservatives linking to our article, saying the screenshots we published reveal a shadowban conspiracy, are leading thousands of viewers to our site.

Today, conversations around shadow banning seem to be gaining momentum in a time where Black people, especially, have real concerns regarding over-policing. Overall, platforms need to do better in applying their community guidelines evenly and ensuring they do not echo our faulty governments habit of criminalizing Blackness, so often the very engine that fuels the content is what keeps these spaces alive.

Refinery29 reached out to TikTok for comment regarding ongoing shadow banning claims and will update this story when we receive a response.

Julian Assange: Dame Vivienne Westwood leads protest – BBC News

Image caption The 79-year-old was suspended in a large bird cage outside the Old Bailey, where Julian Assange will appear next month

Dame Vivienne Westwood has led a protest to stop the extradition of Julian Assange, while suspended in a large bird cage.

Dressed in a canary yellow suit, the fashion designer chanted "free Julian Assange" from a 10ft (3m) cage outside the Old Bailey in London on Tuesday.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is due to appear for a full extradition hearing on 7 September.

Dame Vivienne said she wanted to get Julian Assange "out of the cage".

If extradited to the US, Mr Assange will face 17 charges under the Espionage Act and conspiracy to commit computer intrusion after thousands of classified documents were published in 2010 and 2011.

The 49-year-old is currently being held in high-security Belmarsh Prison in south-east London.

The protest of about 20 demonstrators was organised by Dame Vivienne's son, Joe Corre, who co-founded Agent Provocateur.

Dame Vivienne, 79, said she had dressed in yellow because canaries were used by miners to detect poisonous gas.

She said: "If the canary died they all got out. Julian Assange is in a cage and he needs to get out. Don't extradite to America."

Liz Cheney the latest target of Trump loyalists which is enough to label her voice of reason on the left – RT

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) has been slammed by multiple members of the GOPs Freedom Caucus, as well as by Donald Trump Jr., for breaking with the president on multiple issues winning her warm accolades from the left.

During an in-person conference between various Republican representatives on Tuesday, Cheney came under fire from her own political party. Sources in the closed meeting reported that Ohios Rep. Jim Jordan, a co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus and one of the presidents more loyal supporters, listed off all the times Cheney has publicly broken ranks with President Donald Trump, including on his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, his tweeting, as well as on foreign policy.

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Arizona) reportedly targeted Cheney for endorsing an opponent to Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky), whom she was seen speaking with on the House floor following the meeting.

Though Cheney would not directly answer journalists questions about comments made to her at the conference, several Republicans went public soon after with their critiques of the congresswoman.

Rep. Matt Gaetz called for her to step down or be removed as Chair of the House Republican Conference, while Donald Trump Jr. compared her unfavorably to Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), one of the presidents fiercest rivals within the Republican Party.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), one of the more Libertarian-leaning politicians, also targeted Cheney and blasted her for advocating for endless wars.

Federalist senior editor Mollie Hemingway reported that Cheneys comments about the much-derided and questionable New York Times report on Russian bounties allegedly being paid for US soldiers deaths in the Middle East have also distanced her from her colleagues. Cheney was one of the few Republicans not to criticize the story, but appeared to rather buy into its claims.

Comments critiquing Cheney, especially those from Paul, represent an ongoing split in the Republican Party that has only been fueled by Trump, who was elected supporting many policies new to the mainstream sector of the Republican Party. The Freedom Caucus was even formed in 2015 as a response to a party that was quickly changing, with many of its members focusing more on cutting spending, criticizing the authority of federal agencies like the NSA, and advocating against American inverventionalism around the globe. Meanwhile Cheney, who was elected to her position in 2017, holds ideals closer to past presidents like George W. Bush and to her father, Dick, who served as vice president during that administration.

The congresswoman has often criticized Trump for arguing against American troop involvement in the Middle East, but has praised him on occasion when hes become more aggressive overseas, like when he ordered the assassination of Irans Qassem Soleimani.

Cheney may hold opinions closer to the Republican Party before Trump became a serious contender, but all it takes today to earn praise from the left is a break from the presidents loyal political allies just ask John Kasich. Despite her foreign policy opinions and support of NSA spying, she found herself praised as a voice of reason and for being on the right side by the left, following reports about the GOP conference all because she was simply targeted by Republicans for not supporting Trump enough.

Ethereum Flippens Bitcoin to Become the Most Used Blockchain – Cointelegraph

For the last month Bitcoin (BTC) price has traded in a tight range and trading volume has been relatively flat. Meanwhile, several tokens on the Ethereum network have been topping the price charts, especially the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) tokens.

New data from Messari shows that Ethereum has just surpassed Bitcoin as the network that settles the most value per day. This means that the dollar value on the transactions of both Ether (ETH) and its tokens is now higher than that of Bitcoin.

While the DeFi sector has been gaining popularity, stablecoin transactions have been responsible for most of this volume, having settled over $508 billion in transactions over the course of 2020. This figure is nearly double the $253 billion settled in 2019.

Tether (USDT) is the main stablecoin responsible for the volume and according to Messari, it could possibly surpass Bitcoin as the most transacted cryptocurrency in the market.

USDT vs Bitcoin daily transaction value. Source: Messari

Bitcoin offers colored coins through protocols like Counterparty and Omni, but these assets pale in comparison to the smart contract capabilities of the Ethereum network, which continue to be showcased through the novel possibilities of DeFi. Coupled with lower fees and faster transaction times, Ethereum has become the chain of choice for centralized and decentralized stablecoins alike.

While USDT was first issued on the Bitcoin blockchain, only 13.2% of its supply currently resides on BTC, while the Ethereum chain holds 59.8% of the USDT supply. As most of the USDT balance is held on Ethereum, USDT is also the biggest spender of gas in the network, according to data from ETH Gas Station.

Led by USDT, the collective stablecoin market capitalization grew from $2.4 billion to around $8 billion in Q1 alone. Another $3.8 billion was added in the Q2, making the current figure over $12 billion, and approximately $9.18 billion belongs to Tether. Tether has also surpassed Ripple (XRP) as the third largest cryptocurrency.

While inter-exchange settlement is the most popular use for stablecoins, DeFi has also been a considerable force in the growing activity seen on the Ethereum network. Because of their peg to fiat currencies, stablecoins are quite popular among DeFi lending protocols which have been gaining traction throughout 2020.

The platforms have seen noticeable surges in the amount of funds locked and in Q2 the figure surged above $2 billion. Compound alone achieved a major milestone with over $1 billion assets borrowed in total.

Stablecoins and growth within the DeFi sector are likely to continue driving transaction volume and settlement value on the Ethereum network but will the network be able to support this growth?

Stablecoins already account for more than 70% of the total daily value settled and if the Ethereum network continues to have unresolved congestion and scalability problems there could be real problems within the DeFi platforms.

For the time being, its unclear whether or not the Ethereum Network will be able to deal with the rapidly increasing stablecoin and DeFi activity, especially as corporations set their sights on the sector.

5G And Machine Learning: Taking Cellular Base Stations From Smart To Genius – Forbes

At the wireless industrys biggest conference, over 100,000 people are set to see the latest innovations in smartphones, artificial intelligence devices and autonomous drones exhibited by more than 2,400 companies. Photographer: Angel Garcia/Bloomberg

5G is ushering in a new breed of genius networks to deal with the increased levels of complexity, prediction and real time decision making that is required to deliver the performance gains promised not just in enhanced mobile broadband applications but also in IoT and mission critical use cases. At the core of this evolutionary step is the use of machine learning algorithms.

The ability to be more dynamic with real-time network optimization capabilities such as resource loading, power budget balancing and interference detection is what made networks smart in the 4G era. 5G adds support for new antenna capabilities, high-density and heterogeneous network topologies, and uplink and downlink channel allocation and configuration based on payload type and application. While there are many uses of machine learning across all layers of a 5G network from the physical layer through to the application layer, the base station is emerging as a key application for machine learning.

[+] booth during the Mobile World Congress Americas event in Los Angeles, California, U.S., on Friday, Sept. 14, 2018. Fallon/Bloomberg

One of the hallmarks of a next generation 5G base station is the use of advanced antenna capabilities These capabilities include but are not limited to massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna arrays, beamforming, and beam steering.

Massive MIMO is the use of antenna arrays with a large number of active elements. Depending on the frequency band in which it is deployed, massive MIMO designs can employ from 24 active antenna elements to as many as several hundred. One of the uses of MIMO in general is to be able to transmit and receive parallel and redundant streams of information to address errors introduced by interference. However, another use specific to massive MIMO is beamforming and in more advanced systems, beam steering. Beamforming is the ability to utilize a set of phased arrays to create a beam of energy that can be used to focus and extend signal transmission and reception to and from the base station to a particular mobile device. Beam steering is the ability to then control that beam to follow the device in a fully mobile environment within the coverage footprint of that antenna array. When massive MIMO is fully brought to bear and beamforming and beam steering optimally employed, network operators and consumers alike benefit from increased network capacity and expanded coverage through increased data streams, decreased interference, extended range and more optimized power efficiency.

But how does machine learning help with this? Imagine if you will a race between a boat with 10 oars vs a boat with 20 oars. The boat with 10 oars is coordinated by a coxswain not just for rhythm but also is making real-time corrections to heading and cadence based not just on what is currently happening but also what is predicted to happen further down the course. In contrast the boat with 20 oars has a coxswain who is not capable of coordinating rhythm and is only making corrections based on general information that has already occurred. Clearly the former will win the race while the latters oars are not only making minimal progress but in some cases are actually interfering with each other. The same is true with massive MIMO. In order to fully realize the benefits of massive MIMO capability, beamforming and beam steering, machine learning is being utilized at the base station to provide real time and predictive analysis and modeling to better schedule, coordinate, configure and select which arrays to use and when.

The new 5G network standard requires higher density deployments of smaller cells working with larger macro cells and multiple air interface protocols. The vision is for smaller cells to be designed for indoor locations or dense urban environments where GPS positioning is not always reliable and the radio frequency (RF) environment is far from predictable. Understanding the location of the devices interacting with the network is essential not only to application layer use cases but also to real time network operation and optimization. It is therefore critical to find ways not only to be able to accurately locate where user equipment is located but also to track them as they move within the coverage footprint.

To this end, machine learning is being applied to estimate user equipment location using RF data and triangulation techniques. While this is not a new concept, the use of machine learning algorithms is yielding material improvements in terms of accuracy, precision, and viability of widespread use than previous means. This is even more significant in that these improvements are being achieved in an environment that is orders of magnitude more complex and dynamically variable than ever before.

One of the driving considerations for the development of 5G is to have one framework to address the varied and often conflicting requirements of 3 use cases, including Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), massive IoT, and mission critical applications.

Previously served by purpose built, disparate networks, these use cases now will be supported with the 5G network architecture while continuing to require capabilities that are at odds with each other. Networks designed to support EMBB use cases are required to be optimized for high speed, low to medium latency, and profitable capacity. Massive IoT networks on the other hand, need to be low cost, narrow bandwidth, with low control plane overhead and high reliability. While mission critical networks require high speed, low latency and high reliability.

In order to make this vision a reality, 5G has been designed for high variability and flexibility both in the control plane and in channel configuration. As such, it is essential that 5G networks have the ability to predict payload type and use case based on changing conditions, such as historical loading data, RF conditions, location and a wide range of other factors, in order to efficiently and dynamically configure and utilize 5G channel resources.

Consequently, machine learning is being used to not only predict user equipment characteristics and capabilities, probable use case requirements, and RF conditions, but also potentially the type of content most likely to be requested and using edge caching techniques to bring the content closer to the end user. For example, based on historical trend data, it might become known that due to the proximity of a base station to the university as well as the current trending titles on Netflix or Disney + that at certain times of the day, specific movies should be made available closer to that base station to reduce network congestion, buffering, and latency. Similarly, a certain base station located close to an intersection that gets congested at certain times of the day might need more traffic and V2X sensor data to help aid ADAS or autonomous driving applications.

As an industry, we are at a critical evolutionary point as the combination of 5G and machine learning combine to put us on a path towards generational leaps in network capability and efficiency brought about by increasingly more complex functionality and adaptability. But it is an evolution not a revolution and these are the very early days. These 5G machine learning applications are just the beginning of the potential that can be unleashed not just at the physicallayer enabled by the base station but through to the application layer as these two foundational technologies are brought together and we enter the era of genius networks.

Top U.N. Official: Jailing and Fining Chelsea Manning Over …

Chelsea Manning leaves the Albert V. Bryan U.S. District Courthouse in northern Virginia in March. A top official with the United Nations says that her punishment for refusing to testify amounts to torture.

A top United Nations official is accusing U.S. authorities of imposing a penalty that amounts to torture against former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, who is currently jailed in a federal facility after refusing to testify to a grand jury investigating WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Earlier this year, a federal judge detained Manning and imposed on her daily fines after finding that she was in contempt of the court's order to testify.

Nils Melzer, the U.N. special rapporteur on torture, said in a letter that he made public this week that detaining Manning and fining her with the aim of coercing her to testify constitutes a kind of torture that runs afoul of U.S. international human rights obligations.

Calling Manning's treatment a "deprivation of liberty," Melzer wrote that jailing and fining Manning fulfills "all the constitutive elements of torture, or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. In my view, such measures do not fall under the 'lawful sanctions' exception" of the U.N.'s Convention Against Torture.

President Barack Obama, in the waning days of his presidency, commuted Manning's original 35-year sentence for leaking classified government documents to WikiLeaks to the seven years she had already served.

But in May, U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga sent her back behind bars to a federal detention facility in Alexandria, Va., for refusing for a second time to offer testimony to a grand jury impaneled to investigate Assange.

Melzer noted in his letter to American authorities that Manning spent time in solitary confinement following her 2010 arrest.

The terms of Manning's current detention are all the more alarming, Melzer wrote, given her previous ill treatment in prison.

"Victims of prolonged coercive confinement have demonstrated post-traumatic symptoms and other severe and persistent mental and physical health consequences," he wrote.

Manning was fined $500 the first 30 days of her confinement and then $1,000 a day for each day after that for refusing the testify. The accumulation of fees are set to continue for as long as the grand jury investigating Assange is convened, typically a period of 18 months.

Melzer, who sent the letter to American officials on Nov. 1 but made the document public only on Monday, is asking authorities in the U.S. to explain how Manning's punishment does not violate international human rights standards.

"Please provide information on how such coercive measures, which do not constitute circumscribed criminal sanctions, but which appear to intentionally inflict progressively severe suffering and financial pressure for the purpose of coercing individuals to testify against their conscience," he wrote.

In March, when Manning was first imprisoned for refusing to comply with the grand jury's request, her legal team called the punishment "pointless, punitive and cruel."

Added her lawyers: "Chelsea has clearly stated her moral objection to the secretive and oppressive grand jury process. We are Chelsea's friends and fellow organizers, and we know her as a person who is fully committed to her principles."

A spokeswoman for the Department of Justice did not return a request for comment.

Manning has become a national voice for gay and transgender rights and has continued to agitate for the disclosure of government secrets.

"These are our institutions. And what's their intent? To keep the public unaware of things given the scale of the classification system and to crush dissent," Manning said in 2017 during a book tour stop in Philadelphia. "This is not just about secrecy but about whether we have an open dialogue in our society."

UF students, get used to this topic: artificial intelligence – Tampa Bay Times

The University of Florida on Tuesday announced a $70 million partnership that will bring artificial intelligence to the forefront of the schools technology programs and introduce the topic more broadly to the student body.

The joint effort with the California-based company NVIDIA will result in the hiring of 100 new faculty and touch every UF graduate with at least one class exposing them to artificial intelligence concepts, the university said. It also will give UF the fastest artificial intelligence supercomputer in higher education, officials said.

The discipline is a branch of computer science that has brought the world products like self-driving cars, food delivery robots and computers that engage humans in a game of chess. Artificial intelligence makes it possible for machines to perform human-like tasks by learning from experience and making adjustments.

Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was present for the Zoom announcement, said the initiative would attract students to UF from across the nation.

I think its going to help the state of Florida modernize our workforce, he said. I think well have an added boost as we seek to become an economic powerhouse and internally as we bounce back from the pandemic.

Provost Joseph Glover said more than 600 faculty and staff members have been involved so far in conversations on how to incorporate the subject of artificial intelligence into their disciplines.

We believe this is so important to our future and our students futures that every student who graduates from the University of Florida, no matter what their major is, should have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, the training and the tools of artificial intelligence and data science, Glover said. This is not only important to our students but the nation.

Glover said the partnership will help catapult the University of Florida to the forefront of AI and create the next generation of AI-enabled workforce in this country.

The announcement laid out the financial details of the partnership: a $25 million gift from Chris Malachowsky, co-founder of NVIDIA and an alumnus of UFs Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering; $25 million in hardware, software, training and services from NVIDIA; and a $20 million investment from UF.

The supercomputer is expected to be installed by November. Its an upgrade from the existing UF supercomputer known as HiPerGator. Malachowsky said the machine will be among the worlds top 10 supercomputers, capable of processing vast amounts of data that can be used across many fields, including climate research and medicine.

In explaining why the company brought the partnership to Florida, Malachowsky described the state as a living laboratory for some of the really big problems of today for society, with its long coastline, large population, varied demographics and a workforce in need of upscaling to deal with the growing digital divide.

UF is in the process of infusing artificial intelligence into its curricula, Glover said. And, while not everyone will be expected to become a programmer, everyone will have exposure to it and the opportunity to be certified in that area, he said.

Certifications will include courses on ethics, bias and how artificial intelligence applies to certain disciplines. By spring, Glover said, he expects a survey course to be offered, and by next summer the school may offer more specific boot camps in artificial intelligence.

Cammy Abernathy, dean of the College of Engineering, said artificial intelligence is already being applied across disciplines to finding solutions for diabetes and as a means to combat climate change and red tide. Broadening access to the topic can lead to a more equitable society, she said.

Philosophers, lawyers and computer scientists are working together to ensure that AI does not further enforce the biases that are present in our society and does not intrude on the privacy and rights of the public, Abernathy said. These issues of fairness and access are important, so much so that they will be at the heart of this initiative.

Glover said the university will work to provide access to businesses, the K-12 education system, historically black colleges and universities and state and community colleges.

The population in Florida will have opportunities to train on this, Glover said.

Malachowsky said he hopes wealthy alumni in each state consider investing in artificial intelligence at their universities.

Rep. Michael T. McCaul, co-chair of the AI Caucus, said in a statement released by the university that the announcement serves as a model.

Computing power is at the heart of artificial intelligence, and this investment in the fastest AI supercomputer in academia will ensure that the U.S. stays on the cutting edge of research and development, he said.

Mori Hosseini, a member of UFs Board of Trustees and former chair of the Board of Governors, said Tuesdays announcement made him wish he could go back to school.

We are all witnessing a significant moment in history for the state of Florida and the University of Florida, he said.

Black creators say TikTok is still secretly blocking their content – Digital Trends

Black creators on TikTok claim the popular social media app is still shadow banning their content despite the companys pledge to better support creators of color after weeks of criticism of the platform. Shadow banning refers toblocking or partially blocking a user or their content from a web forum so its not immediately apparent to the user that they have been banned.

Black creators told Digital Trends that theyve seen their follower and view counts drastically shrink after they posted about experiencing racism on the app or the Black Lives Matter movement, or after they spoke about race broadly. Some claim theyve had their videos taken down without being given a reason leaving them left to wonder why.

Ive had multiple videos taken down and they dont respond at all, said Nakita David, who has 380,000 followers on the app, in an interview with Digital Trends. If you work really hard on a video and TikTok just decides to delete it for whatever reason, its the worst pain.

Another creator, Cindy Manu, 19, who lives in South London, said when she started her TikTok in September 2019, she was getting over 50,000 views on average. She would regularly be featured on the apps coveted For You page where popular videos are shown to a wider audience garnering her millions of views.

Then, as worldwide Black Lives Matter protests began to pick up, Manu noticed videos go missing from her feed, and her view count sharply dropped to just a couple hundred views, even though she didnt switch up her content at all.

I actually went back through my videos and looked to see if there was anything explicit or swearing, but there was literally nothing, she told Digital Trends. Thats when I realized TikTok took it down itself. It made me really annoyed.

A TikTok spokesperson denied the allegation in a statement about shadow banning.

This isnt something that we do, said A.B. Obi-Okoye, a spokesperson for TikTok, in an email to Digital Trends. We make our Community Guidelines publicly available and encourage users to review them so they can understand what type of content isnt permitted on the platform. Users also have the ability to appeal decisions they believe to have been made in error.

TikTok has come under fire in recent weeks, not only from the United States government over security concerns, but also for how it moderates the content of its 800 million active users.

TikTok has been accused of hiding hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter, suppressing content relating to protests in Hong Kong, and limiting the reach of videos made by disabled users.

Internal documents obtained by The Intercept also revealed that moderators were told to stifle content made by users deemed too ugly, poor, or disabled.

In May, thousands of TikTok users changed their profile pictures to the Black power symbol in an effort to show support for Black creators reportedly being censored on the app. Users were also encouraged to follow Black creators and share their content instead of their own.

I knew people who were on there for years and only had 200 followers, said Lex Scott, the organizer of Mays #BlackoutTuesday protest on TikTok and founder of the Utah chapter of Black Lives Matter. Then you see these people go from 200 followers to over 10,000 during the blackout. It was really powerful.

Following the protest on the app, TikTok released a series of actions that it would take to better support Black creators. In June, the company said, we acknowledge and apologize to our Black creators and community who have felt unsafe, unsupported, or suppressed.

TikTok added it would take concrete actions to build a better, more inclusive platform.

But some Black creators and activists, like Scott, believe TikToks promises were short-lived.

I am shadow banned, said Scott. Our content is being restricted, and I believe it may be by design as well. I think we all just want to know why they are doing this to us.

David, who posts comedy and commentary, said her posts about Black Lives Matter dont do as well as they used to when she created her account late last year.

Its been a lot worse since they said they would start working with Black creators, she said. The Black Lives Matter movement is nowhere to be seen on TikTok anymore. Its really sad.

Black creators like David and Manu have attempted to reach out to TikTok to understand why their posts were deleted or how they violated community guidelines, but said they did not hear back.

It affects your mental health, Manu said. You think its your fault that your videos arent doing well.

And since the influencer industry has become a lucrative career path for the social media-savvy, shadow banning also threatens another essential aspect of a Black creators life: Income.

Ive spent a lot of time making content that should be doing good and getting recognition for it to get nothing. That messes with my income, said 17-year-old Denise Nguimdoh, who has over 300,000 followers. We know when our content is doing well, so it is really obvious to us when we are shadow banned.

Ive had brand deals and promos, but now it all just came to a stop, said Manu. A couple months ago, I was getting [direct messages]; now I havent gotten anything and Ive stopped gaining followers.

Before her follower count plateaued and her views took a downfall, Manu said she was able to navigate promotional deals regularly and have a bonus income along with her job as a retail associate at a department store. Now, she said, she is just frustrated.

Everything was just starting to look really promising, said Manu. I feel like Ive come out and made some good content and just got like 500 views. Now I have to work twice as hard to get my content out there than white creators.

Both Manu and David said they plan to start focusing their attention on other social media platforms outside of TikTok like YouTube and Instagram especially if they continue to feel like their content is being shadow banned.

I think TikTok needs to be more diverse, said David. TikTok is a steppingstone, but you can never rely on TikTok because its not consistent.
