Matthew Longley of Gun Critic About Buying Gunstreamer.com

U.S.A. -(Ammoland.com)-When Gunstreamer announced it was shutting down, Hickok45 knew he couldnt let it die. He invested a lot of time and effort to grow the site and wanted to save it. He knew the right team that was not only capable of keeping the site alive but would be able to let the website flourish.

He contacted the team over at Gun Critic to see if they would be willing to buy part of the site to keep it afloat. The Gun Critic team is not only tech-savvy business people, but they are also Second Amendment advocates. They saw saving Gunstreamer as a great business opportunity that they could use to grow the firearms community.

Without wasting time, the Co-Founder of Gun Critic, Matthew Longley, contacted the owners of Gunstreamer to make them an offer they couldnt refuse. They bought into the site and provided a lifeline to keep Gunstreamer afloat while they could figure out how to make the site profitable.

I was able to speak with Matt about Gun Critic, and why he believes the reward of buying into Gunstreamer was worth the risk.

John: What is Gun Critic?

Matt: Gun Critic is a user aggregated firearm review community. Its very similar to Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB.com, and MetaCritic but for firearms. We offer product reviews, free gun values, product price comparison, specs, Q&A, joint problems, and deals for all guns in our database (currently about 28,000 firearms).

John: Gun Critic is like the Rotten Tomatoes of the gun world. Did Rotten Tomatoes give you the idea for Gun Critic?

Matt: I got the idea because I frequented these movie review websites and thought it would be an excellent idea for the firearm industry. When reading gun reviews, I did not like that many of the reviewers are very biased and often paid for their reviews. I would much rather see 1000 user reviews about a gun than one critic reviewing a firearm.

John: You and your business partner stepped up to save Gunstreamer. How did that come about?

Matt: Hickok45 contacted us about Gunstreamer. He mentioned that he liked the platform for several reasons, mainly for backing up his YouTube videos, and he wondered if we could get involved. This was about three days before Austin announced that he was closing down the platform. So, it was a bit of a rush, but we thought it was essential to try to save the platform.

John: How do you plan on cutting costs?

Matt: First thing we did with the platform was to dive into the expenses. It appears that a lot of the expenses came from popular websites streaming our videos. We are going to cut back or charge that for now, and it should reduce costs by 50-75%.

John: Do you see a way to make it profitable?

Matt: We have a couple of strategies for making the site profitable. Mainly we are going to migrate towards affiliate marketing.

John: Is the original team staying on?

Matt: Yes, the original team is staying on in some capacity. Austin is still a minority owner of the site and would like to be involved moving forward.

John: Are you planning on integrating Gun Streamer into Gun Critic?

Matt: This is something we are thinking about. There are several ways to join the two communities together. Gun Critic has a video on every product page, and Gun Streamer could feature Gun Critic data on pages that match certain products. So, there are some easy ways to integrate the two platforms.

John: How do you plan on luring people over from YouTube?

Matt: This is the big challenge. Content creators will typically focus on where they make the most money. So, I would say its more of a waiting game with YouTube. Eventually, they will cut out monetization for gun videos and maybe ban the channels all-together. The key for us is to have a solid platform positioned for when that happens. If we focus on traffic and revenue for content creators, it will occur over time.

John: Is there a plan to implement streaming on Gunsteamer?

Matt: I spoke with Austin about this feature. He said that streaming for everyone would be very expensive, but it might be possible to allow this feature for some content creators. Its definitely something we would like to see added to the site in the future.

John: Any other upcoming features of Gun Critic or Gun Streamer you can share with us?

Matt: One, gun values. Gun Critic has quite a few new features coming out. We are making our gun values more real-time and increasing our data sources to improve accuracy. Gun values fluctuate almost daily, so gun value books are out of date before they are printed.

Two, the gun community. We recently built a Reddit style community for users to share content related to the firearms industry. One nice feature of this community is the ability to create best-of lists with voting. We will also have official lists and offer awards to manufacturers and retailers. For example, awards for Best Shotgun 2020, Best 9mm Pistol 2020, Best Hunting Rifle 2020.

Three, a popularity score for firearms. We are currently working out an algorithm to figure out the most popular guns each week. Each gun would have a score based on their popularity, and this will become a search filter on the platform. This will be nice to be able to look up the most popular items by caliber, style, manufacturer, etc

Four, firearm stats This feature will take some time to perfect but should be pretty interesting. For about 30 years, video games have utilized stats for users to compare firearms. They typically use stats like accuracy, damage, mobility, fire rate, range, and other similar stats. These stats would be somewhat based on our own algorithms and community feedback. Stats like this will be handy for new gun owners to understand how the firearm would function. It would also be very familiar for most gun owners younger than 50 because many of them grew up playing First-Person-Shooter video games and would quickly digest the stats.

Examples of Failure in Artificial Intelligence – ReadWrite

Amazon has a project they call Rekognition. Its an AI-based facial recognition software thats marketed to police agencies for use in investigations. Its essentially supposed to cross analyze images and direct law enforcement officers to possible suspects. The problem is that its not very accurate.

In a study by the Massachusetts chapter of the ACLU, dozens of Boston-area athletes pictures were run through the system. At least 27 of these athletes or roughly one-in-six were falsely matched with mugshots. This included three-time Super Bowl champion Duron Harmon of the New England Patriots.

Can you say, not a good look?

Users Find Flaws in Apples Face ID

Apple is always coming up with cutting edge technology. Theyve set the standards in the smartphone and mobile device industry for years. For the most part, they get things right. But sometimes they can be a bit too brash in their marketing. In other words, they like to flex their muscles. As you might expect, this invites haters, trolls, and skeptics to challenge their claims.

One recent example occurred with the release of the iPhone X. Leading up to the launch, Apple had invested a lot of time and marketing dollars into their front-facing facial recognition system that replaced the fingerprint reader as the primary method of accessing the phone. The claim was that the AI component was so smart readers could wear glasses, makeup, etc. without compromising functionality. And thats essentially true. The problem is that Apple also clearly stated the Face ID technology cant be spoofed by masks or other techniques.

One Vietnam-based security firm took this as a challenge. And with just $200, they made a mask out of stone powder, glued on some printed 2D eyes, and unlocked a phone. This is just a reminder that bold claims can sometimes come back to bite!

Robot Dog Meets Fatal Ending

Who doesnt love the idea of a robot puppy? You get a cute little machine without the barking, walking, pooping, eating, or expensive vet bills. But if youre looking for a life partner, you might not want this robodog.

In 2019, a Boston Robotics robodog named Spot met a dramatic and untimely onstage death while he was being demoed by the company CEO at a conference in Las Vegas. Tasked with walking, he slowly started to stumble and eventually collapsed to the floor as the audience uncomfortably gasped and chuckled.

Artificial intelligence used to grade GCSE and A-level exams – The National

An exam watchdog has told pupils the statistical modelling being used to standardise their A-level and GCSE results is for their own good.

The new algorithm was created because of concern that relying solely on grades predicted by teachers could lead to inflated and unreliable results.

British qualifications are a popular choice for students in the UAE, with 91 schools offering A-levels, says WhichSchoolAdvisor, a reviewer of leading independent schools.

They are typically taken at ages 16 and 18, respectively.

Schools in May sent exam boards the grades they anticipated that pupils would have achieved had formal assessments not been cancelled because of the spread of Covid-19, along with ranking orders for them in each of their subjects.

Ofqual, the exams regulator in England, has since said that the boards were standardising the information they had received, making adjustments to grades where needed to bring consistency to teacher judgements across all schools and colleges, and to make sure results are comparable with previous years.

This is in your interest and those of all students, and means that you, universities, colleges and employers can have confidence in results this year, it said in guidance for pupils posted online this week.

The latest statement comes after Ofquals annual summer symposium for stakeholders, which covered in detail the exceptional arrangements in place for awarding grades this year.

It explained the variety of tools that would be used in the modelling to compute final grades, including historical results achieved by schools. The results will be published for A-levels on August 13 and on August 20 for GCSEs.

Jeff Evans, the director of Learning Key Education Consultancy in Abu Dhabi, said confidence could be shaky if the results release earlier this month of the International Baccalaureate, a rival education programme for which exams were also cancelled, was any gauge.

Mr Evans said that there had been angry responses after some grades were far lower than predicted.

Its a concern really because having seen what happened with the IB exams, the IB scores were drastically downgraded in many cases parents and students will be very anxious, especially with university places depending on a one-grade difference sometimes, he said. Its a pretty unprecedented situation.

One significant bone of contention is the use of mock exams in factoring the final grade, he said. January mock exams are notoriously unreliable as a predictor of final results, Mr Evans said, because students often bump their marks up by a couple of grades when they sit the real A-levels and GCSE several months later.

There are also fears that such a system could disadvantage poorer pupils and those from black, Asian and other ethnic-minority backgrounds, who are more likely to attend worse-performing schools.

Concern was raised last month in a report by a committee of British MPs that wealthier pupils may benefit more from this kind of assessment.

The committees chair, Robert Halfon, said it was far from convinced that the appeals system would be fair.

Ofqual rebutted the claim, saying the expectation was that the majority of grades would be identical to or within one grade of those predicted by teachers.

A few days later it modified its position, releasing a statement that declared some teachers had been optimistic in their predictions but not uniformly so. Others had not been optimistic at all.

Simply using the CAGs [centre assessment grades] to determine final grades would have been unfair, it said.

Ofqual also said that appeals would still be allowed but only if there had been an error in the process. You cant appeal just because you do not agree with the grade you received, the new guidance said.

Those who wished to improve any of their grades would also have an opportunity to take exams in the autumn.

WhichSchoolAdvisor said it hoped those with a legitimate causes for concern would have their grievances addressed promptly.

And now a word from Citizen Scott: Why I love the USA | From the editor – SILive.com

Hi Neighbor,

Last week, we visited with Staten Island Patriot Artist Scott LoBaido. I took issue with Schotts Blue Lives line down Hylan Boulevards center median in front of the 122nd Precinct stationhouse.

Readers sounded off. Dozens. Loudly. One things certain: Mr. LoBaido has support.

DEAR MR LALINE, one began. YOUR BASHING SCOTT LOBAIDO IS TYPICAL OF WHAT THE LEFT IS DOING ON A DAILY BASIS TO DESTROY AMERICA .... WHY IS IT IF A PERSON SHOWS ANYTHING PATRIOTIC THEY ARE DEMONIZED .... TOTALLY DISGUSTING... " (caps courtesy of the author).

But then, Your column about Scott was not only well said but it was written while maintaining a deep respect for this extremely talented artist. I completely agree with your sentiment. I have also followed Scott for the last 30 years. I ask What could he be thinking? when I see some of his work. He is passionate but at times his message seems misdirected.

And then, when I thought I heard it all from both sides, the President of the United States weighed in. You do one blue line and they make it like its a mortal sin, President Trump told a group of law enforcement leaders in the White House. Take that, Bill de Blasio!

Now its time to hear from Scott himself. He asked time for a rebuttal and Im happy to provide. So, as Ive boomed over the microphone at many fundraisers, with Scott behind the curtain, itching to start painting . . . Heeeeres Scott!!

Respectfully, Brian, I hear every single note.

Ahhhh, the sweet/bitter taste of Amendment 1. It is indeed DELICIOUS.

I want to thank you for the very kind words in your column last week and for giving me an opportunity to rebut some of the other points you brought up.

Yes, Brian, we go back a long time, and like all friends, there have been tiffs, disagreements, misquotes, and worst of all, forgetting the capital B in my last name (lol). But as an editor you have been fair and have ALWAYS pushed through to get my art, activism, antics, rants, and compassion onto the pages of our hometown newspaper -- the Staten Island Advance. For that I am truly grateful.

DEMYANS CAVES

I remember the first article the Advance wrote about my giant, surreal mural on the face of The Caves (former Hofbrau house owned by the late, great artist, Jack Demyan) back in the 80s. The next story was when I painted my first flag mural on the side of the Victory Diner (God, I do miss that place). Not everyone appreciates my art. But I AM an artist whether you agree with my style or not!

Staten Island has many great artists -- Murphy, Yuster, Padovano, and many more. They are genius at their execution in their non-aggressive subjects. My early work was oddly fun and surreal with a dash of Americana because since childhood I can always remember a crisp, snappy flag waving from a pole outside my Nana's house where I spent most of my time.

Rosalyn (Nana) always made it clear that grandpa was in the "big one" (WW ll) and we should have fun but always be GRATEFUL for whatever we had because we were American. In Nana's basement kitchen, the town hall -- open every day -- three portraits hung on the wall: Pope John ll, President Ronald Reagan and Frank Sinatra. Those portraits, the flag and the lessons I learned in that kitchen will stay with me forever.

It wasnt until the 90s that I found my niche in this complicated world of art. I was in a Manhattan art gallery that had an American flag as a welcome mat, beckoning people to wipe their feet on it.

I was appalled, but no one else was.

A new trend of political correctness had taken hold of the art world along with the sentiment that, everything is bad in life because of America.

In their opinion, the American flag was taboo because it stood for oppression. This HATE America thing was really getting some teeth. I wondered why artists were so eager to speak out against America, our military, and our flag. I didn't get it because artists have more freedom in America than in any other country on earth. We should be the most patriotic rather than biting the hand that feeds our wonderful right to test the boundaries and express ourselves.

My young brain struggled to understand how I could remain in the art world while continuing to demonstrate my love for America -- then BAM - I heard my calling.

That was my purpose! I would say goodbye to the intolerant art club, go it on my own and use my God given gift to shine a spotlight on what is GOOD about America, what is awesome about our flag.

I was going to paint it big and bold and 3-D so it knocks you down when you see it.

ACROSS THE USA

And so it began -- the tours across America, sleeping in my truck, no heat or AC, only eating due to the kindness of strangers and donors who shared my vision. Countless hours sitting with veterans, painting their posts and raising money for their causes. Getting arrested for speaking up for America against the PC culture that was hell bent on destroying her. The photos of me being led out of the courthouse in handcuffs splashed across the front page of the Advance. My peers snicker, There goes that crazy Scott LoBaido, again and again and again. Twenty five years later the PC beast has devoured our way of life despite my efforts and continuous warnings that this day would come.

Racist -- a horrible yet important word which is now being used 24/7 to label anyone WHO HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION than the PC mob. Those of us who support America and respect our flag, our anthem and our President are being labeled as racists without consideration for who we are.

The word "racist" is being used against leaders of corporations. It's being used to get people fired from their job. It's being used to strike fear into people so they grovel on their knees and apologize for the way they were born and the color of their skin.

The word racist is being used as a club to ground out our FIRST AMENDMENT right to hold and express a different opinion -- and the artworld is leading the pack.

But isn't this exactly opposite of what the artworld and the PC mob is supposed to stand for? Weren't we preaching for compassion, tolerance and acceptance for gay rights, women's rights and the rights for everyone no matter their religion or ethnic background? Aren't the artists supposed to stand up and defend the act of self expression, starve for their cause and die fighting?

It is unfortunate that you and others consider my "Thin Blue Line" down the median of Hylan Boulevard as divisive. It may be seen by some as provocative, but it is not divisive. If I painted it over or next to the BLM street art, that would be divisive. But I didn't. My purpose was not to silence that message. It was to ensure that everyone had an opportunity to hear another message. A message of LOVE for a group of human beings who are being humiliated and demoralized because they wear a blue uniform.

You can LOVE the police and believe that Black lives matter. The two are not mutually exclusive and they should not be made out to be. Just like you can be an artist and still love America because it is the one country that supports your right to express yourself freely even when that means speaking against her.

I am not a divider, my good friend. Balancer would suit me better. I cannot and should not be pressured into collaborating with people who are confused about their message to the extent that we have all but forgotten that it was the murder of George Floyd that started this discussion. And yes, my good friend, I am a voice for the regular guy who is just trying to make a living, feed his or her family, pay the mortgage and whose quality of life is being annihilated by ultra-radical mayors and governors who have more sympathy for criminals than the law abiding citizens they are sworn to protect.

LIKE ROME . . .

We are a free nation, but a nation of laws. Yes, I have stepped over that line as a protester, and I LOOOOOVVEE those that do as well, but to destroy, burn, maim, and take over a community and kill it, Like Rome, we lose it all.

And that is where we are at.

The discussion on race relations cannot happen in good faith until the monster PC mob stands down. The message is confusing. Whether we are artists or police, immigrants or native, wealthy or poor, we all want America to grow and evolve, to be the best that she can be.

That can only happen through honest, raw dialogue, mutual respect and tolerance of differing opinions -- exactly what artists throughout history have been fighting for.

However, that conversation cannot happen within the laws being laid out by the PC mob who seek to wipe out our history and direct our souls until we all act, look and express ourselves the same.

America is a beautiful mosaic, filled with individuals who yearn for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Not everyone gets everything he or she wants, but everyone has the opportunity to try.

For 30 years I have been using my talent to help others. I've raised millions of dollars for worthy causes, and will continue to do so happily. Now I am selling my art so I can be free to help others without having to beg for the funds to do so. No shame in being a capitalist. After all, the Advance sells papers and gets tons of click$$ when my work is featured. Ahhhh the sweet taste of opportunity.

As always, I look forward to running into you at our local restaurants, give each other that usual head shake and smirk and have a martini together,

Your friend, The one and only, Citizen Scott LoBaido

Oh by the way: I did not protest the artist or his work at the Brooklyn museum. I protested against the museum directors decision to regularly bash one religion (Christianity) in a publicly funded institution.

How the New York Times profits from self-censorship – The Spectator USA

The recent high-profile departures at theNew York Timesof editorial page editor James Bennet andopinionwriter Bari Weiss have left some on the business side of the news industry scratching their heads. Both exited amid ideological turmoil that Weissdetailedin a letter of resignationtothe Timesspublisher A.G. Sulzberger, describing the hostile work environment she endured at the hands of fellow editors and staffers. They were wholly intolerant, she said, of her role as acentrist at the paper. Bennet, said Weiss, had led the effort after President Trumps election in 2016 to bring in voices that would not otherwise appear in theTimes.

But what of Sulzberger, whose prime duty is toNew York Timesshareholders and therefore to the papers bottom line? How does the top executive justify alienating swathes ofTimes customers and potentialsubscriberswho may be sympathetic to, or even merely curious about, ideas beyond what Weiss described as our 4,000th op-ed arguing that Donald Trump is a unique danger to the country and the world?

Theoverlookedtruth is that there is considerable financial incentive for theTimesto limit the scope of discussion. This business angle may foretell what to expect from theTimesgoing forward.

Its a product of how the business of news has evolved in recent years. Advertising revenue has been hurtling downhill for some time and the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated that decline. In the first quarter of this year, the Timess ad revenue fell 15.2 percent year-over year. In May,theTimesannouncedthat it expects advertising revenue in the second quarter to fall even more dramatically, bybetween 50 and 55 percent.

And yet the companys stock price continues to climb. It is now priced in the $46per sharerange. Its all time high of $52per share, set in 2002, is within reach. This steady climb marks a remarkable recovery from a low of about $4per sharein 2009.

These strong numbers are a product of theTimesssuccessful digital subscription business, which hasgrownrapidlyin recent years. Last year, the publisher announced the goal of reaching 10 million subscribers by the end of 2025. In February the paper announced it had hit the halfway mark a year early. In the first quarter of this year theTimes added an impressive 587,000 new digital subscribers, bringing its total subscriber base to more than six million, some 85 percent of which are online-only.

In the past, when advertising was the main driver of revenue, the goal was to reach the widest possible audience. Now, though, the business model demands the paper focus on catering to a narrow but passionate segment of the readership base. Thatsegmentincreasingly accounts for the bulk of theTimess income and it prefers a narrow, left-wing editorial line.

A 2017 study of datafrom hundreds of major media sites conducted by Piano, a leading provider of metered paywalls for the news industry, foundthat for most media outlets the bulk of digital subscription revenue isdriven by a small percentage between 2 and 12 percent of readers. Piano calls them super-fans, super-users, direct and dedicated, the invested, and loyalists.

Being able to serve and monetize this relatively small part of the audience now makes all the difference between success and failure, the study concludes.

WhiletheTimessloyal subscriber base grows, its overall readership is growing even faster. The rapid increase in subscriber numbers means that, if anything, an even smaller percentage of the audience is driving the bulk of the revenue, says Mark Thompson, CEO of theTimes.

This relatively small base of loyalists, who are so fundamental to theTimess business model, stand largely on the left of the political spectrum.

TheTimess public editor, Liz Spayd, addressedthe questionof the papers political leanings in a 2016 column. She was unsuccessful in uncovering the official proprietary numbers on the ideological breakdown of theTimess subscriber base, butnotedthat on most days, conservatives occupy just a few back-row seats in this giant liberal echo chamber.

Should the paper write off conservatives and make a hard play for the left and perhaps center left, Spayd asked, or has that already happened?

Spaydnotesa 2014 Pew Research surveywhich found that 65 percent ofTimesreadersleaned to the left, and only 12 percent leaned to the right. Considering the heightened polarization in media today, its likely that those numbers now skew even further left, and that the loyalist subscribers are drawn from that audience. Spayd was on to something.Herjob at theTimeswas subsequently eliminated.

The phenomenon of leftward drift and loyalists came starkly to light after President Trumps election in 2016, which triggered a new surge in subscriptions. In 2017, Times executive editor Dean Baquet acknowledged in a CNN interview the impact Trump has on revenue. Every time he tweets, it drives subscriptions wildly, Baquet said. In 2018, the Financial Times reportedthat theTimeswas still riding the high of the so-called Trump Bump.

The President often belittles the paper as the failingNew York Times. The Timesoften returns fire.TheVox columnistJeff Guodescribed this approachas a great way to pile even more liberals onto the Timess subscriber bandwagon.

In recent years Thompsonhastried to push back against the contention that subscriptions are driven by opposition to Trump, citing diversification among subscribers geographically and also in terms of race and ethnicity. But he has provided no evidence of any political diversification.

Inherresignation letter,Bari Weissconfirms that stories arechosen and told in a way to satisfy the narrowest of audiences.Sulzbergers apparent comfort with the departures of Weiss and Bennet affirms why this is the case.FortheNew York Times, what Weisscallsself-censorship has been good for business. As long as the stock price and paid subscriber numbers keep rising, expect that newspapers ideological transformation to proceed apace.

Spider-Man: Toei Crafted One of the Best Adaptations of the Hero’s Origin – Despite Censors – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Welcome to Adventure(s) Time's 125th installment, a look at animated heroes of the past. This week, we're revisiting what has to be the most accurate retelling of Spider-Man's origin, though it happened to appear in an unexpected place. And if you have any suggestions for the future, let me hear them. Just contact me on Twitter.

Spider-Man and His Amazing Friendsdidn't have much of a life after its airing, but it tends to be fondly remembered by fans of the era. The series featured character designs from John Romita and other comics artists, replicating much of the look of an early '80s Marvel comic. The kid-friendly premise had Spider-Man joined by Firestar and Iceman as his crimefighting pals (an attempt by the network to cribSuper Friends' success) who share a secret crime lab inside Aunt May's home. The menaces aren't terribly menacing, and the show's no more dangerous than anything else on Saturday morning of the era.

One episode, however, pushed the bounds of what the censors would allow. And surprisingly featured a stylish anime look that blends well with the traditional Western superhero aesthetic. Debuting onOct. 2, 1982, is "Along Came Spidey," from writer Don Glut and director Don Jurwich. The anime styling of the episode is evident from the opening and almost as prevalent as the billboard advertising a Daily Bugle expos on Spider-Man from none other than Stan Lee himself.

The opening sequence has the Shocker, in his television debut, escaping prison and immediately attempting a robbery. Spider-Man and his allies confront him, but in the process, innocent bystander Aunt May spots Spider-Man, of whom she is afraid, and is injured. It's a jarring sequence, as this is a reality where people are rarely injured or face true danger. Having this happen to Aunt May of all characters gives the episode a gravity the other episodes lack.

While visiting the unconscious May in the hospital, Peter expresses his guilt to Iceman and Firestar. After confessing to thoughts ofgiving up being Spider-Man, he's asked why he became the hero in the first place. And this leads us to the obligatory origin flashback. However, in this case Spider-Man's origin is actually a dark parable about the consequences of abused power. How exactly will it fit in the sanitized reality of heavily censored kids' TV?

Well, with barely any changes, as it turns out. And this isn't a quick thirty second detour. The sequence takes up a chunk of the episode. Writer Don Glut has revealed NBCdid not want Uncle Ben's death included in the origin, but Stan Lee"stuck to his guns" and demanded it be part of the episode. When adapting the origin fromAmazing Fantasy#15, Glut essentially goes panel to panel, telling the story as diehard comics fans know it.

RELATED:Spider-Man: Peter Parker's Brand New Day Is Officially DONE

We have ostracized nerd Peter Parker enduring Flash Thompson's bullying, getting rejected by a dark-haired girl named Sally, and attending a science exhibit, where he's bitten by a radioactive spider. This is followed by a montage of him discovering his powers (including the bit with the kid who spots him climbing a building), then calling out wrestler Crusher Hogan in an amateur wrestling match. After gaining celebrity as a costumed performer, Peter allows a thief to pass him by. And, as we all know, this thief will later have an encounter with Peter's beloved uncle.

Clearly, this is written by someone with great affection for the original tale. A writer who, earlier that year, adapted the same story for the concurrentSpider-Manseries airing in syndication! That version of the story, however, had a brainwashed Aunt May in the framing sequence, attempting to kill Spider-Man.

Glut doesn't shy away from presenting the newly powerful Spider-Man as an arrogant jerk, one who bears responsibility for his Uncle Ben's death. And the animation from Toei is dark, moody, and perfect for the sequence. The censors do step in, however, and have the characters always stop just short of outright saying Ben has died. Still, it's clear to even a small child what's happened.

Telling the story reaffirms Peter's dedication to helping others, so the team reunites to haltthe Shocker's crime spree.Afterdestroying the belt that grants Shocker his powers, they return to visit May in the hospital, where she's making a fast recovery. She's even forced to acknowledge that she might've been wrong about Spider-Man all of this time, which is the opposite realization she had in Glut'sother Spidey origin story from that year. In "Arsenic and Aunt May" we're teased with the idea of May going soft on Spider-Man, only to learn she despises her nephew's alter ego even more.

The second season ofAmazing Friendsonly featured three episodes. The economics of the shortened season enabled the production to have legendary Japanese studio Toei animate the episodes, making them the best looking shows on Saturday morning at the time. Toei even snuck in a cameo from Gatchaman's Joe in his familiar No. 2 t-shirt during Peter's wrestling match. However, Toei does seem to have some issues with animated Spider-Man's chest emblem at times, and it's so small it's barely visible in some scenes.

To distinguish between the flashbacks and today, Aunt May is given auburn colored hair and a more "youthful" voice during Spider-Man's origin. This does force the audience to question just how long ago Peter became Spider-Man, though, as May's apparently aged twenty years or more.

Accomplished voiceover actorJohn Stephenson voices the Shocker. You might not know his name, but his voice isfamous as thenarrator on Dragnet.

Network censors wouldn't allow any direct punches from Spider-Man, so the classic Steve Ditko image of Spidey decking the burglar is replaced with him webbing up Ben's murderer instead.

In a way, this episode is an unfair tease. Fans of the era were simply excited to see these characters on television. The lackluster animation and simplified plots were tolerated, considered a price that had to be paid for adapting the property. But what if the same approach to storytelling was brought to the adaptations? Fans witnessed this in the '90s, when FOX Kids loosened restrictions and allowed faithful adaptations ofBatmanandX-Mento air. It's a shame ten years had to pass before the promise of this episode could be fulfilled.

But, even then, the Marvel animated series of the '90s suffered from some flagrantly cheap overseas animation. Japanese studios like Toei were doing work within the budgets of Western productions in the early '80s, enabling an episode that looks this nice to air. (By the '90s, the majority of these jobs were going to cheaper operations in Korea.) If you want a taste of what an '80s style anime starring a classic Marvel hero could've been, this is as close as you'll get. Sure, there'sPryde of the X-Men, also animated by Toei, but that story's intentionally divorced from the complexity of the comics canon."Along Came Spidey" actuallyisSpider-Man's origin, directly from the comic! The majority ofAmazing Friendsdoesn't hold up to time, but this one is worth checking out on Disney Plus.
