Social justice For You – THE MERCURY – The UTD Mercury

Though TikTok started off as a social media app for dancing teenagers and funny cat videos, it has recently become a favored platform for Gen-Z and millennials to facilitate social justice and address the inequity in our world today.

Many activists take to TikTok because of its viral nature. Unlike other social media apps such as Instagram and Snapchat, TikToks algorithm is designed in a way that users dont necessarily need a huge following to amass views. As a result, TikTok is great for spreading awareness, with only a small interest in political videos being needed to show similar content in the future. Additionally, its For You page makes it more likely that a video about Black Lives Matter or the presidential election will garner attention, even if it is by a smaller creator.

Furthermore, TikTok allows for serious issues like politics to be conveyed to an audience in an engaging and personal way. Unlike YouTube, where users would first have to click a specific video and then watch it for ten minutes or so, TikTok features short, accessible videos that capture peoples attention and encourages them to learn more.

According to a study conducted by Reach3Insights, TikTok has emerged as a catalyst for Gen Z to share their political views. This same study stated that 77% of TikTok users used the app to learn more about social justice while 54% used it to engage in discussions about politics with friends and family.

The effects of this political movement on TikTok have been far-reaching. Brad Parscale, chairman of Trumps re-election campaign, posted a tweet in June saying that the campaign had garnered over a million tickets for the Tulsa convention. However, attendance was much lower than expected: the Tulsa Fire Department only counted 6,200 scanned tickets. Behind this prank were thousands of TikTok users who registered for tickets and purposely didnt show up in order to display their disapproval of Trumps presidency.

In addition, striving for equality on TikTok has encouraged users on all social media platforms to amplify voices that support racial justice while blocking those that dont. When #WhiteoutWednesday began trending on social media to subdue the Black Lives Matter movement, TikTok users, especially K-Pop fans, worked together on many platforms to overwhelm #WhiteoutWednesday with videos of K-pop stars.

Though TikToks structure allows for most creators to garner attention on political videos, it is far from perfect. Shadow banning is a method through which TikTok limits the promotion of a certain video so that fewer people can see it, and many creators that talk about activist related causes claim they are primarily being targeted.

TikTok suspended Feroza Azizs account (@getmefamouspartthree) after she posted a viral video condemning the mass detention and treatment of Uighur Muslims in China. TikTok claims that this suspension was due to one of her past deleted accounts, but Aziz refuses to believe this and encourages others to keep speaking about the issue. Iman (@theeemuse), another activist who has been disseminating protest information and speaking out about systemic racism, has been shadow banned multiple times. The reason why TikTok is shadow banning political content that doesnt violate their community guidelines remains unclear.

TikTok depicts a diverse community of thousands of young people discovering the capabilities and limits of a platform to raise awareness for social injustices. TikToks new role as a form of collective political expression for youth should encourage us to have difficult conversations and spread awareness of the injustices around us.

Shadow Gate: Watch The Banned Documentary Exposing "Deep State" From Arrested Journalist Millie Weaver – The Jewish Voice

Shadow Gate, a brand new documentary from independent journalist Millie Weaver was released Friday as the film maker was literally raided by a SWAT team and arrested

In the documentary: Weaver has concluded Republicns nd Democrts are working together in order to bring down President Donald Trump. She has said, Both prties re eqully guilty of covering up wht should turn out to be n even bigger scndl. Shdow Gte: the tcticl nd opertionl role the shdow government plyed behind the scenes crrying out the coup ginst President Trump. Were going to be looking behind the puppets t who the rel puppet mster, string-pullers re. On her website, Weaver has mentioned, The material presented in this documentary should concern people of all political affiliations given elected officials are not the shadow government. This is about real players whose names never come up but should. Corrupt carrier politicians are definitely part of the beltway swamp, even aspects of the deep state, but they are not the shadow government. Two whistleblowers, who worked extensively within the Shadow Government as contractors have come forward with revelations that may be the biggest whistleblowing event to date.

As Peter Bary Chowka detailed earlier at AmericanThinker.com,Millie Weaver, widely known asMillennial Millie, a 29-year old conservative new media video and print journalist with a large following online, was arrested at her home in Ohio on Friday morning.Police officers apparently from a local SWAT team took Weaver to the Portage County Jail in Ravenna, Ohio where she is being held without bail until at least Monday for a tentative status hearing.

Information gathered from various bloggers, independent journalists and citizen reporters indicate her charges were unrelated to the production of the video, however the timing is obviously suspicious.

For the first 30 hours before You Tube started banning all copies of the documentary, over 700,000 views were raked in. It is extremely questionable why the video would be banned, there is no hate speech, there is no misleading medical information, there is no violence. The video presents people who claim various things about data collection and the behind the scenes of the government.

TJV found the full production hosted by Banned.video , take a look at what You Tube does not want you to watch !

The latest TikTok trend doesn't involve an intricate dance routine, voiceover, or clever outfit change. Instead, users are simply playing the song "Bulletproof" by La Roux and sharing the difficult things they've lived through, which made them even stronger (hence the song choice).

Beauty YouTuber and influencer James Charles has taken on the challenge himself, referencing ok, totally and completely shading his feud with Jeffree Star and Tati Westbrook in the process.

"You think you can hurt my feelings? I lost 3 million subscribers in one day & cancelled over something I didn't actually do ," James wrote over a video of himself smiling awkwardly. He captioned the video "2019 was a... dark place ," all as a reference to his infamous public battle against Tati and Jeffree.

If you didn't tune in for the original drama, here's the TLDR:

James' friend/mentor Tati released a video, accusing him of manipulating straight men into hooking up with him, among other things. Jeffree jumped into the mix, calling James a "predator" on Twitter. James lost a ton of subscribers, eventually gained them back, and one year later the tables have completely turned. Tati and James are friends again and she now claims that Jeffree gaslit her, using her as a tool to end James' career. Both Jeffree and Tati have both publicly apologized to James, but this is the first time he's addressed the drama since it all went down in June.

The BTS ARMY just proved that they aren't here to play any games thanks to a brand new YouTube record.

The band released their brand new track, "Dynamite," on August 21 and fans were definitely excited to hear the track as soon as it dropped. According to Variety, the band ended up having the biggest premiere on YouTube thanks to their fans.

The band ended up having 3 million fans tune into the premiere and had 4 million views after it initially dropped. The last video that held the record what Blackpink's "How You Like That", which had 1.66 million concurrent viewers during the premiere back in June.

Variety also reports that BTS is set to break the record for most views in 24 hours for a music video. Fans are also reporting that BTS had likely beat the record for the fastest video to beat 10 million views after just 20 minutes. However, the numbers have yet to be officially confirmed by YouTube.

[/twitter]

Fans are also working hard to make sure the song goes number one on the Billboard charts. Their biggest fight will be against Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's "WAP" which has held the top spot for the past two weeks. Meanwhile, Blackpink's collaboration with Selena Gomez will be released on August 28.

Still, with the BTS ARMY behind them, the band still has a good chance to reach the top spot. BTS' "Boy With Luv", which featured Halsey, topped at number 8 on the charts. With this being their first English single, the band can certainly rank higher in the US. BTS also topped the Hot 200 charts for their last four albums.

Their latest release, Map of the Soul: 7 - The Journey, recently peaked on the Hot 200 at number 14. While this might look like a dip for the band, the album is actually a re-release of past songs from their various albums in Japanese.

Story continues

While fans will have to wait a bit longer before official numbers come out, there's no doubt that they're ready to make sure the band has another big hit on their hands.

Facebook is in the dock; we need to resist Left-Congress assault on free speech – The Indian Express

Written by Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore | Updated: August 17, 2020 9:14:55 amIt is no secret globally that Facebook has been hauled up by various government bodies for controlling the flow of facts. (Reuters)

In George Orwells 1984, it was a thoughtcrime to actually disagree with the viewpoints established by Big Brother. The latest manifestation of this Orwellian concept is the Left-Congress cabals outrage over a Western media houses hit-job on Facebook, an already Left-Congress-leaning platform. Truth, as in the case of 1984, is a casualty. Merely scratching the surface reveals how this storm in a teacup is merely an exercise to browbeat Facebook for allowing certain opinions to even exist.

It is no secret globally that Facebook has been hauled up by various government bodies for controlling the flow of facts. The Singapore Parliamentary hearings in this context have become rather famous representatives of Facebook were pulled up for their smug attitude. In its parent country, the United States, a Senate hearing had laid bare the hoax of neutrality by cornering Facebook on using the powers of monopoly to censor political speech, particularly conservative viewpoints. In India, too, we have seen examples of Facebook actually filtering out non-Left and non-Congress viewpoints through manufactured labels of fake news. They are even accused of using shadow banning algorithms.

What the Left wants is not control over hate speech but unfettered freedom of hate speech to its ideologically-aligned members. That is why you would hear Mark Zuckerberg quote Kapil Mishra but say nothing on Sonia Gandhi who exhorted people in Delhi to do aar paar ki ladai (prepare for the final battle). There are millions of posts mocking Hindu gods and abusing right-of-centre leaders. But Facebooks advanced algorithms and community standards fail to catch them. However, unsuspecting common people running pro-right-of-centre pages are suspended with no right to appeal.

What the Left wants is not diversity in organisational culture. It wants full compliance. Hence, it does not suffice for them if most hirings in Facebook India come from Left-Congress background. There are examples of current and former Facebook executives with links to the former government and opposition parties, and some of them have been openly critical of the prime minister as well. To accuse them of being pro-BJP is laughable.

Nor does it bother the gatekeepers that the Congress party was caught hand-in-glove with Cambridge Analytica, an infamous big-data-enabled democracy manipulator that has interfered in several countries electoral processes and has used Facebook as its weapon. They actually had the Congress hand symbol in their office but this controversy was silently buried. Imagine the uproar if the same linkage had been found with a BJP members son-in-laws fathers nephews brothers son.

The problem, however, is much larger, and intellectually rooted in the fake post-truth world phenomenon bandied about by a bunch of elitists afraid to lose their power of labelling views as thoughtcrimes. Scared of being shown the mirror of reality, an entire cabal has decided to rally their comrades and undertake hit jobs on those who do not fully comply with their dictums.

Sadly, the real story has been missed in the entire discussion the actual scam by Facebook that has been brushed under the carpet for too long. Funding and validating eminent journalists belonging to the pro-Left cabal and empowering them to become the arbiters of truth on Facebook is the game, whereas anything that goes against their views and opinions is deemed fake. Out-of-job Left-leaning journalists and their views count as gospel truth to the gatekeepers, but the Prime Ministers speech on Independence Day got labelled as fake news. Is it just a coincidence that the battery of Facebook certified eminent fact-checkers havent yet been able to fact-check any of Rahul Gandhis claims?

It is surprising but not shocking to note that Facebook even allowed paid promotion of posts using morphed pictures of PM Modi with a Pakistan flag, whereas pages that allow opposing viewpoints often lose their monetisation for merely stating facts.

After the decline of the grip of mainstream media as the sole arbiter of truth, the battle for narratives has moved to social media. Originally, these were not platforms that the Left-Congress controlled, because there were no gates or gatekeepers. However, since then, a planned campaign has taken over these platforms too.

This latest round of manufactured outrage should be seen as the Lefts internecine warfare to control an already-Congress and Left-leaning platform and punish them for even the most minor of thoughtcrimes allowing alternative viewpoints. This is yet another attempt to regain a monopoly over narratives and disenfranchising alternate versions. Armed with the power of an organised cabal, the gatekeepers believe that they can continue to perpetuate the same one-sided monopoly.

The more social media platforms fall to tendentious voices from the Left and become echo chambers, the more they will lose their credibility. We should all stand up and resist this organised assault by the Left-Congress ecosystem on our fundamental right to exercise our free speech within the boundaries set by Indian law.

History is on Edward Snowden’s side: Now it’s time to give him a full pardon | TheHill – The Hill

Its been seven years since Edward Snowden rocked the world, and in America the ground is shaking once again.

In a promising turn of events, headlines have seen an unprecedented outpouring of support for Snowden from high-ranking American officials. In a press conference Saturday, President Trump stated that he is going to take a look at [Snowdens case] very strongly. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and two sitting members of Congress, Reps. Justin Amash (L-Mich.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), have also taken to Twitter to support the whistleblower. Equally encouraging is how swiftly all of this has drawn the ire of Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.); in my own experience, when youve angered someone with the surname Cheney, youve probably done something right.

It is an addictive tendency in politics to feel a sense of history about what it is one is fighting for. Everyone wants to believe that their heroes from ages past are smiling down on them while simultaneously rolling in their graves at the sight of whatever the opposition is doing. But the fact of the matter is that the vast network of scandal-ridden government agencies, clandestine secret courts, and diabolically unconstitutional statutes trying to destroy Snowden hails from a particularly dark, shameful chapter of Americas past.

Snowden stands accused of violating the Espionage Act of 1917, championed by then-President Woodrow Wilson. Passed just two months after Americas entrance into World War I, the law sought to silence criticism of the war effort and crush dissent within the ranks of the armed forces. In his State of the Union address just two years earlier, Wilson begged Congress to pass it, declaring, Such creatures of passion, disloyalty, and anarchy must be crushed out they are infinitely malignant, and the hand of our power should close over them at once.

Now the law has withstood over a century of criticism and legal challenges from civil liberties advocates, and the misery it has inflicted on countless Americans has proven painfully obvious. In 1918, antiwar activist Charles Schenck was arrested for distributing flyers encouraging men to resist the draft. That same year, socialist Eugene V. Debs was sentenced to ten years in prison, deprived of his citizenship, and disenfranchised for life over nothing more than a speech he made criticizing the war. In January 1919, however, the Supreme Court dealt a devastating blow to freedom of speech by concluding that neithers arrest constituted a violation of the First Amendment.

And these are far from the only people to have been victimized by the very law being used to terrorize Snowden today. A search for just a few of the more well-known cases will yield the stories of journalist Victor L. Berger, activists Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman, former U.S. Army soldier Chelsea Manning, and former Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) employee Henry Kyle Frese.

Discussing recent events in an April 2020 interview with journalist and constitutional lawyer Glenn Greenwald, Snowden warned, Now, the only thing we have left our rights, our ideals, our values as people thats what theyre coming for now, thats what theyre asking us to give up, thats what theyre wanting to change. And remember that, from the perspective of a free society, a virus is a serious problem but the destruction of our rights is fatal thats permanent. With so much confusion and uncertainty about the future of liberty in America, there has hardly been a more fitting moment for our leaders to stand with freedom by denouncing the ever-expanding reach of the surveillance state.

As the curtains of tyranny close tighter, giving Edward Snowden the full pardon he deserves would provide this much-needed glimmer of hope for privacy in America.

Cliff Maloney is the president of Young Americans for Liberty (YAL).

Lawyers4Assange call for the British government to end extradition proceedings against Julian Assange – Neos Kosmos

Lawyers and legal academics are calling on the UK Government to end extradition proceedings against Australian Wikileaks founder, editor and activist Julian Assange and release him from prison.

Mr Assange is fighting against extradition to the US to face 17 charges under the Espionage Act and conspiracy to commit computer intrusion after he published hundreds of thousands of classified documents in 2010 and 2011 when he came to international attention. His leaks provided by US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning. These included the Baghdad airstrike Collateral Murder video, the Afghanistan war logs and Iraqi war logs and many more. As a result, US government launched a criminal investigation into Wikileaks, which he founded.

The letter to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Justice Secretary Robert Buckland, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and Home Secretary Priti Patel is signed by 169 individuals and legal organisations. Among those calling for the UK government to intervene are Professor Vaios Koutroulis, professor of Public International Law from the University of Brussels, Belgium. Law groups signing the letter are the American Association of Jurists AAJ, consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the Center for Constitutional Rights CCR, USA, the European Association of Lawyers for Democracy and World Human Rights ELDH and many more.

READ MORE:Assange fails extradition bid

Mr Assange is currently incarcerated in HM Prison Belmarsh, reportedly in ill health. Lawyers4Assange pinpoint the unlawful nature of the extradition of Mr Assange due to failure to ensure the protection of his fundamental trial rights in the US. The letter states that Mr Assange faces show trial at the infamous Espionage court of the Eastern District of Virginia, before which no national security defendant has ever succeeded. Here, he faces secret proceedings before a jury picked from a population in which most of the individuals eligible for jury selection work for, or are connected to, the CIA, NSA, DOD or DOS.

The lawyers express their collective concerns about the violations of Mr Assanges fundamental human, civil and political rights and the precedent his persecution is setting.

They call on the British government to act in accordance with national and international law, human rights and the rule of law by bringing an end to the ongoing extradition proceedings and granting Mr Assange his long overdue freedom freedom from torture, arbitrary detention and deprivation of liberty, and political persecution.

Roaming Charges: Conventional Weapons at the DNC – CounterPunch

The politics of the lesser evil has always had a nasty tendency to hold to the great old evil and thus to prepare the way for even greater new evils.

HannahArendt

Day One

+ Quite a symbolic way to kick off the DNC convention: The DNC quietly excised a call to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies from its platform, saying including the language in the first place was an error.

+ This news was swiftly followed by an announcement that the Pipe Fitters Union was endorsing Biden, despite his pledge to stop the completion of the KXL Pipeline. Pretty sure the pipe fitters union knows something about Bidens real intentions that the Sierra Club refuses to believe

+ Last month, a new study found that flaring of natural gas wells, from the fracking operations Biden has vowed not to end, was directly linked to an increase in preterm births in South Texas. Pregnant Latina women were more likely than white women to give birth prematurely.

+ The backlash to Trumps flirtation with pardoning Edward Snowden has been swift and rabid, with Democrats like Susan Rice leading the assault. There are certain people the State will never forgive and will persecute to their last days and beyond: Malcolm, the late Philip Agee, Daniel Ellsberg, Leonard Peltier, Chelsea Manning, Julian Assange and Edward Snowden, among them.

+ What would a Democratic Convention be without an altercation involving Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was accused of shoving a high school student volunteer for her Democratic primary challenger Jen Perelman, outside of a polling place in Broward County.

+ It was revealed earlier today that Bernie Sanders personal favorite for Bidens VP was not Liz Warren. Not Barbara Lee. Not Karen Bass. Not ButKamala Harris.

+ Michael Bloomberg dropped $18 million into the DNCs coffers and was rewarded with a speaking slot, an echo of Ronald Reagans quip, Im paying for this microphone!

+ In a bid to win the desperate housewives of suburbia, the opening night of the DNC Zoom Convention is being hosted by the peoples tribune Eva Longoria, who could have held the entire event inside her $15 million Beverly Hills palazzo

+ There are more American flags on display tonight than at Kerrys 2004 Reporting for Duty convention. I hope everyone takes a knee during this playing of the national anthem

+ Its only been 8 minutes and theyve already dropped a needle on Bruce Springsteen.

+ Springsteens 9/11 threnody, The Rising, is being put into service tonight to aid the election of a candidate who exploited 9/11 as an excuse to go to war in Iraq. As cynical as Reagan appropriating Born in the USA on the campaign trail

+ Democrats are presenting a rare message of unity tonightby silencing those in their own party who disagree with the leadership.

+ I hope the kids were sent to their rooms before Andrew Cuomo came on to give them nightmares by bragging about overseeing the deaths of 32,500 New Yorkers

+ Not one of these deeply admirable & courageous health care workers have been allowed to mention Medicare for All in their testimonials about being on the frontlines of the COVID pandemic.

+ Medicare for All and the Green New Deal have been replaced as rallying cries byGive Us Vote by Mail or Death!

+ Most of these speeches have the bland and dreary quality of a state of the union response, without the comedy of Marco Rubios frantic rehydrations

+ Kasich: I know Joe. He wont turn hard left!

+ Hes right about that.

+ Will Bernie dare to venture to left of Doug Jones?

+ Theres nothing quite as jarring as listening to a lecture byKlobocop on racial justice night!

+ If this is the kind of timid middle of the road pablum theyre dishing out on racial justice night, how many countries will they threaten to sanction, drone and overthrow on foreign policy night?

+ If everyone is welcome in the Democratic Party can it really stand for anything?

+ In this merry-go-round of former candidates, they feature Seth Moulton but not Tulsi Gabbard, Julian Castro, or Marianne Williamson? Some are forgiven their apostasies, some arent.

+ Looking at his bookshelves,Id have thought Beto would have had a better vinyl collection

+ One gets the sense that if the Democrats take the senate back 51-49, Biden will offer to give one senator back in the name of unity.

+ Bernies standing in front of a huge stockpile of firewood as he pontificates about climate change

+ Bernie spent 10 awkward minutes avoiding any mentionof the ideas he supposedly made mainstream but couldnt even get into the Democratic platform.

+ Bernie is now a pitchman for Medicare-for-All-Above-60!

+ The intensity ofMichelle Obamas speech backfired to this extent at least: it vividly highlighted all of Bidens weaknesses as an orator.

+ Was Melania taking notes, cutting-and-pasting?

+ Fighting fascism from Barack and Michelles new digs in Marthas Vineyard

Day Two

+ Just in time for Bills big speech tonight at the DNC, the New York Post has released photos of Clinton getting a neck massage from Epstein accuser, Chauntae Davies.

+ Last nights soul reclamation project has been replaced with a plan to upgrade Americas moral compass.

+ Breaking on MSNBC: Colin Powell will be a featured speaker at the Democratic National Convention tonight. Will he announce that hes finally found the aluminum nuclear rods and the mobile BW labs?

+ Colin Powell will tell the DNC that the country needs a commander in chief who takes care of the troops like family and Biden knows that: It comes from the experience he shares with millions of military families sending his beloved son off tour and praying to God he would come home safe.

+ 4500 US troops KIA in Iraq, 32,000 US troops WIA in Iraq. (Iraqi dead and wounded cant be mentioned)

+ Robert Drapers book, To Start a War, exposes Powell for the total fraud that he is. He never once directly told Bush he had even the slightest doubts about invading Iraq. How he became a hero of the antiwar Democrats is one of the great political mysteries.

+ What surprise GOP figure will speak tomorrow night? George or Laura? John Boehner or Paul Ryan? A hologram of Reagan?

+ Permission structure (ie, making the Democratic Party safe for neocons) is a grotesque new political catch-phrases. It needs to be sent right to the guillotine

+ I enjoyed hearing Jimmy and Roslyn Carters voices, though I cant quite recall anything specific they said, which is probably intentional. But it did remind me that Joe Biden had already been in the Senate for four years before Carter was elected president

+ Is this last gasp of Bill Clinton? He sounds and looks enfeebled, perhaps weighed down by flashbacks to his flights on Epsteins Air Lolita. If you want a president who defines the job as spending hours a day watching TV and zapping people on social media, hes your man. Denying, distracting, and demeaning works great if youre trying to entertain and inflame. But in a real crisis, it collapses.

+ Van Jones: Unlike Trump, Bill Clinton apologizes for his mistakes. Did Clinton apologize to Sistah Souljah? The family of Ricky Ray Rector? The mothers and children he kicked off of welfare? Jocelyn Elders? Lani Guinier?

+ Hey,heres Tom Perez, the Democrats chief vote suppressor (against other Democrats), talking about the evils of voter suppression.

+ When Julian Castro, inexplicably exiled from the festivities, inveighed against the lack of Latinx speakers at the DNC convention, Perez humbly noted that he was speaking for many of them. Did they try calling Alberto Gonzales?

+ Everything Jonathan Chait knows about how working class people express themselves he learned from watching one episode of The Family Guy.

+ Its been said that AOC was given a 60 second slot by the DNC. Thats not quite true. She was picked by Sanders to nominate him. If her restrained remarks were vetted and edited, it was likely done by Sanders, not Biden, to reflect his own tempered and deflated rhetoric.

+ AOC and the four flags

+ Even that bridled performance by AOCwhere she avoided mentioning single-payer, free college, forgiving student debt, slashing the Pentagons budget, ending the Afghan war, abolishing ICE, or defunding the policewill be playing on FoxNews for the next three months

+ AOC herself is dismissing reports of divisiveness inside the party, saying November is about stopping fascism within the United States.Of course, divisiveness is vital now more than ever, especially when the alternative is cooperating with systemic fascism to drive a fascist figurehead from office

+ The roll call speakers are so much better than any of the politicians theyve given speaking gigs to

+ Joe will bring the calamari back

+ So strange to see Barbara Lee speaking, ever so briefly, on Iraq War night

+ Right on cue heres John Kerry, reporting for duty again.

+ Kerry lost with this same argument of competent management of the the Empire to George W. Bush. When will the Democrats give up on the imperial project all together?

+ Colin Powell, who helped cover up the My Lai massacre and lied about WMDs to invade Iraq, sermonizing on values is both appalling and ridiculous.

+ Kerry, Powell, then McCainit could be 2003 all over again.

+ How to raise a McCain up when its in defeatthe night they dropped the Nalpalm down and all the Democrats were singing

Day Three

+ In order to protect the sales of hats made in China, Trump is launching a boycott of tires made in Akron, OhioMAGA!

+ The big story in the New York Times this morning is that Trump may have had a romantic relationship with a former Miss Moscow. Romantic relationship. That doesnt sound like Trump to me

+ The Senate Intelligence Committee Report on alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 elections, where the Moscow honey trap story originated, also fingers former congressman Dana Rohrabacher for having received sensitive documents from Russian officials in 2016. If Rohrabacher, long one of the most clownish and inconsequential members on the Hill, was really Putins favorite congressman, then hes much dumber than we thought he was

+ Navarro is right for once. Now, how does he explain Trumps continuing affection for Mike Pence, Elliot Abrams and Rudy Giuliani?

+ Obama speaks tonight. Will he set an example for the youth of the nation by taking responsibility for any of his lethal escapades? The Afghan surge? Deepwater Horizon? The Honduran Coup? Bailing out banks while forsaking the foreclosed? The destruction of Libya? Drone killings.

+ Aide: Harris wants people to see themselves in her speech. See themselves where? Behind bars?

+ Hillary Clinton is returning to the Democratic National Convention to cement her legacy as a champion of women in politics. Shell speak Wednesday night as Kamala Harris becomes the first Black woman to accept a spot on a major presidential ticket. I thought that HRCs legacy had already been cemented and was only waiting to be deposited in Long Island Sound

+ HRC, dressed like an apparition from a Wilkie Collins novel, began her rant with a lie: Iwish Donald Trump had been a better president. No, she doesnt. Her post-2016 political existence is predicated on Trump being a disaster, regardless of the number of bodies left in his wake. In fact, the higher the death count rises, the more smug she gets.

+ Hillary recounts more imaginary conversations than Trump does: For four years, people have said to me, I didnt realize how dangerous he was. I wish I could go back and do it over. I should have voted.' HRC has never associated with such people, which is a big reason she lost.

+ Sacrifice and service two words not normally associated with the Clintons.

+ Those ravens and gulls swirling around the Bay Bridge and sweeping behind Pelosis head gave the whole presentation a Hitchockian mise-en-scene, which it probably merits.

+ Pelosi: Joes, faith in god Where was it when his crime bill expanded the death penalty and he voted to invade Iraq?

+ And they cant understand why people might want to defect from the Democrats and vote for the Greens, Libertarians or Kanye West

+ For some reason, Anita Hill wasnt included in this segment on Bidens tenacious work on behalf of women victims of sex crimes. But the DNC did bring out Mariska Hargitay to defend his crime bill, an actress whos role model for her character on Law & Order SVU was Linda Fairstein, the prosecutor who led the fallacious prosecution of the Central Park Five.

+ Remember when organized labor used dominate these conventions. Now their chief champion in the Senate, Sherrod Brown, is reduced to a subliminal moment

+ In the background of Elizabeth Warrens live shot at an early childhood center, multi-colored block letters spelled out BLM.

+ Where was this Warren 8 months ago? Plotting the undermining of Sanders, I guess, and blowing up her own campaign in the process.

+ So Obama comes to us from the History of the American Revolution Museum, standing next to an exhibit on the US Constitution featuring a portrait of little Jimmy Madison, who took his slaves with him when he moved to the White House with his wife Dolly. When Madison died, he still owned more than 100 slaves, none of whom were freed after his death.

+ Did Obama preserve and defend or ignore, erode and assault the first, second, fourth, fifth, sixth, & seventh amendments?

+ Obama didnt call the press the enemy of the people, but treated many reporters as the enemy of his administration and jailed them.

+ Obama ignored Bidens one sound piece of advice, which was not to pursue a troop surge in Afghanistan

+ Obama gave a real American carnage speech. Too bad he didnt give it to himself 10 years ago.

+ He may go AWOL for weeks, even months, at a time, but Michael Moore always comes home to roost

+ The metaphor of America as family, which the Democrats and Harris, in particular, have been pushing all week as a symbol of unity will fall flat for most people who recall the fraught dynamics of last years Thanksgiving Day meal.

+ Being born in Oakland is one of the best things Harris has going for her

+ Is Willie Brown part of Harris extended family?

+ How is this rhetorical notion of national unity and togetherness relentlessly pushed by Biden and Harris functionally different than Trumps claims after Charlottesville that theres good people on both sides? Will the Democrats ever draw a line they wont cross? Where is it?

+ God knows, Id never have the nerve to speak before 320 million people, even on Zoom, but Harris is not an inspiring orator. Like most prosecutors, she has a mechanical and rigid, almost relentless, speaking style, that sounds even harsher after listening to Obama for 20 minutes.

+ Tonight, only Warren even hinted at a structural enemy beyond the current depraved administration, the corporations, banks & financial predators that have been looting the nation before Trump came on the scene & will be there after hes gone, perhaps even more deeply entrenched.

+ Theres still one night to go, and it may all blow up spectacularly, but theres been much less Russiagating and China-bashing from the Democrats than Id anticipated and feared. One would like to think its been purged from their system. Then again

+ Melina Abdullah: Were not in the streets to get out the vote. Were in the streets to upend this system of oppression.

Day Four

+ I awoke on Thursday morning to the news that Steve Bannon had been arrested while on board a 150-foot yacht by US Postal Service inspectors for his role in a fraudulent scheme to build a private border wall, in which some of his co-conspirators had embezzled money to buy a 40-foot boat that would later make an appearance in a Boaters for Trump flotilla.

+ Trump on Bannons arrest: I havent had anything to do with him in years.

Trump on FoxNews in July: He says greatest president ever. I said, Lets keep Steve out there, hes doing a good job. But theyre all involved.

+ Geoffrey Bennett, NBCNews: Respectfully, sir, its not just Steve Bannon, its Roger Stone, its Michael Flynn, its Rick Gates, Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen. Whats it say about your judgment

Trump: Well, I have no idea.

+ Trey Gowdy throws Steve Bannon under the bus on FoxNews, reverses, plows over him again: Hes the same guy who claimed credit for the presidents victory..the only person on the planet, literally..that can elect a Democrat, because he backed Roy Moore.

MRS Announces Further Developments To Artificial Intelligence Tool Have Driven Record Results – PRNewswire

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Aug. 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --MRS BPO LLC, a leading provider of services to the accounts receivable management industry, announced that their proprietary conversational IVR tool, Adam, has driven record results in 2020.

Launched in beta mode in mid-2018, Adam is a virtual agent, conceptualized, designed, and built at MRS BPO, using IBM's Watson Natural Language Processing software engine. Using NLP and artificial intelligence, Adam is able to converse with customers, offer solutions, take payments and handle a variety of other questions and scenarios that are commonplace in the collection industry - without any human intervention.

In 2019, Adam's first full year of use, he collected almost $2.8 million dollars, took over 17,000 payments and handled millions of inbound calls that would have required the attention of approximately 50 agents. Continuous improvement and refinement is made regularly and Adam learns as he goes. What takes a highly skilled agent to accomplish in three years or greater, Adam has been able to do in roughly four months.

2020 has been a remarkable year for Adam as COVID-19 has dramatically changed the contact center and collection industry. Because Adam can handle previously unmanageable call volumes and is deployed 24/7, collection records are being broken. In just the first seven months of 2020, Adam has handled over one million calls, taken over 20,000 payments and collected more than $4.50 million. "That number of calls equates to tens of thousands of payroll hours of agent time. That's really important because those agents are now freed up to take on other high value functions that satisfy customer needs," explained Co-CEO Jeff Freeman.

"We have been bullish on the ever expanding capabilities of Adam, and how he helps us in a normal environment is very important. However, as we've dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic and adapted to the changing habits of customers and when they choose to contact us, Adam has been a game changer," said Chief Operating Officer Jim Beck. "Normal call volume doesn't exist during a pandemic, and having a 24/7 tool like Adam has given us the ability to properly service more customers at a time of great stress and unease."

At a recent Inside ARM Technology and Strategy Conference, Adam was recognized with a "Tech of the Day" award. MRS's digital roadmap continues to expand into omnichannel solutions that combine Adam's capabilities with chat, email, texting and web portal functions. "Our focus over the past five years has been to give customers the ability to communicate with us in the manner, and time of their choosing. Adam is an additional channel for them when they want to work with us," said Freedman.

Technology Comes Together: Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, And 5G Combine To Aid Surgeons – Forbes

Sergey Tarasov - stock.adobe.com

Too many people, both artificial intelligence (AI) specialists and people who read about the power and potential of AI, make the same mistake many have made over previous technical advances thinking its a panacea. AI is not a solution; it is a tool. It is part of a larger, robust solution. Im not the only one to say that, but it bears repeating with regularity. Ive recently had a discussion that helps emphasize that with a cool, real example.

There are many advances in healthcare, and Ive covered a number of ways that AI can help, ranging from radiology to regulatory compliance and healthcare financial fraud. One area Ive been watching is the operating theater. I began to talk with one company last year, but they wandered away. On the other hand, I had an interesting talk with Michael Freeman, CEO, Ocutrx Vision Technologies. They are working on improving surgery by combining AI, augmented reality (AR), 5G and other tools to improve both on location and remote (telemedicine) surgery.

An operating theater is a very complex place. One of the best statements of that complexity was created back in the early 1980s, with Monty Pythons machine that goes ping. There are many machines and multiple people working to keep the surgeon informed. She must look in multiple places and at a complex array of information. In the real world surgeons even have health problems with straining to see through machines and at multiple devices. An example of the need to simplify that complexity is the current process of having to look at an MRI and then mentally rotate it to find the right portion of a heart to work on. Misunderstanding is a serious safety issue for the patient.

Initial forays into AR for surgeons has leveraged basic information displayed in a heads-up display, showing health information such as pulse and oxygenation. What Ocutrx and others are trying to do is more complex.

The power of AI allows for 3D rendering of MRIs and the rotation necessary to overlay that image upon the actual heart. The problem is that most AI is still in the cloud, being performed at data centers. For surgery, the connectivity can be too slow. A surgeon needs to have less than a 10 millisecond delay in response during an operation, said Michael Freeman. with the multiple people in an operating theater, all requiring additional information, relying on resources in the cloud is not realistic.

The company is working on two technical solutions. First, they are moving computing to the edge, to the hospital. Private clouds, or local servers, can provide the scale-out necessary for advanced computing while residing close to operations. Second, 5G is a solution to significantly increase bandwidth, allowing that compute to work during surgery with the short latency required.

The cloud has been great for developing more powerful computing, but the need for low latency means that on-premises computing is not going away, said Mr. Freeman. Lessons learned from the cloud can now be moved to the edge, including combining AI, AR and other technologies to provide a more advanced yet safer operating theater.

Given that advanced performance, theyre also finding that a key side effect is provided. With people wearing masks and some machines being noisy, relying solely on voice can increase risk. Adding eye tracking to the AR glasses can lower that risk. AI can quickly locate the xyz coordinates of focus, and provide information from certain machines or, combined with voice, send information to other members of the team.

Rural medicine is in an increasingly precarious place in the US, while all over the world there is a lack of specialists. Again, the solution just mentioned can help with that. Imagine an ophthalmic surgeon working on somebodys eyes. That surgeon has the skills, but not the knowledge. There just arent enough specialists to go around and its expensive and a strain on the individuals to keep shipping them around.

A strong operating theater solution can be extended to telemedicine. Think back, for instance, to the eye tracking just mentioned. A remote specialist can be looking at an image, and the AI system can identify where the eye is tracking. The surgeon can then communicate an issue directly to the remote specialist who can see the problem area, clearly marked. The system can then take the specialists mark-up regions and instruction directly back into the operating theater in real time.

Londons Moorfields Eye Hospital is doing just that. While they have significant knowledge and staff, theyve also created additional branches throughout the UK and in other nations. While those branches have trained personnel, theres also a need to link back to the expert knowledge residing in London.

As pointed out in the introduction, what this shows is that AI is a tool. Without a doubt, its a critical tool. However, it is not working in a void. AI is part of a larger solution and must play well with others. Medicine is not the only example, just an interesting one showing how it takes multiple technologies to be integrated into a solution.

The last few decades saw a move of computing from the edge to the cloud. While massive amounts of compute will remain in the cloud, the advances that have been gained there are helping to move performance back to the edge for critical issues. Hospitals are a place where we will see that migration, and surgery is a place where a combination of technologies will help medical personnel provide better care through providing them critical information in a clear and easy method that helps both physically and mentally even in the solution doesnt always go ping.
