The results presented during the prestigious Original Paper Session demonstrated 88.7% accuracy, compared to ophthalmologist gradings, on detecting referable AMD.

AMD, with no early signs or symptoms, is a leading cause of adult blindness in the developed world. Early detection can enable preventative measures in time and stop AMD incident. Currently, AMD diagnosis has been limited to retinal examination by an ophthalmologist. AMD cases in the U.S. are expected to grow from 2.1 million to 5.4 million in the next ten years, and there is an increasing need for large scale screening and identification of individuals who are at risk of developing late AMD. iHealthScreens AI based tool can facilitate this screening and help prevention of late AMD.

When Professor Boaz Golany of the Technion gave a speech to visiting students from the Czech Technical University in Prague several years ago, he described the Golem of Prague as a metaphor for artificial intelligence (AI). The Golem is part of Jewish tradition and is well known to every Czech. The legend of the Golem and his 16th-century creator, Rabbi Loew Judah ben Bezalel, known as the Maharal, has been an integral part of popular culture in Czechia since the end of the 19th century. When people can share such complicated metaphors, it is no wonder there are currently a number of Czech-Israeli research projects using AI in different fields that assist communication between robots of different autonomous vehicles, find an optimal path for robots maneuvering with drones or improve robotic physiotherapy treatment.

Quite a few Czech intellectuals have been fascinated with the connection of the Golem to the development of science. This past September was the 100th anniversary of the publication of R.U.R., the dystopian play by the Czech author Karel apek that introduced the word robot into the English language and to the world of science. apek himself said that his robots were Golems in mass production.

Czech companies also bring high value to complicated construction projects. Dekonta, the leading Czech environmental services and technologies company, participated in a bioremediation project of contaminated soil at the Beersheva Railway Station. The JUTA company supplied high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes for the Habonim water reservoir project in the Carmel coastal area near Haifa.

In the Czech Republic, there is great potential for science. They have amazing potential that they dont use and exploit properly. Professor Abramson has done many collaborations with Czech scientists, including a description of a new auto-immune disease that attacks the teeth and combining Israeli expertise in immunology with Czech know-how in medicinal chemistry. He is looking forward to spending the next academic year on sabbatical in Prague.

The cooperation in science has been growing, thanks to joint financial support from the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology and the Czech Ministry of Education. Currently, there are six Czech-Israeli projects examining the use of nanotechnologies in cleaning air or water, the use of AI in computer vision, the development of assistive devices for physiotherapy, planning for robotic laparoscopic surgery, and conflict-free movement of self-driven vehicles. The successful research project should be followed by commercial success. Private and public support for accelerating innovations, creating joint start-ups, or removing barriers for innovative companies to offer their products in the partner country could bring the Czech-Israeli innovative cooperation to another level.

Artificial intelligence taking role in developing technology to help Parkinson’s patients during COVID-19 pandemic – Purdue News Service

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The COVID-19 pandemic is leading a Purdue University innovator to make changes as she works to provide new options for people with Parkinsons disease.

Jessica Huber, a professor of speech, language, and hearing sciences and associate dean for research in Purdues College of Health and Human Sciences, leads Purdues Motor Speech Lab. Huber and her team are now doing virtual studies to evaluate speech disorders related to Parkinsons using artificial intelligence technology platforms.

Huber and her team have been working to develop telepractice tools for the assessment and treatment of speech impairments like Parkinsons disease. They received a National Institutes of Health small business innovation and research grant to develop a telehealth platform to facilitate the provision of speech treatment with the SpeechVive device, which has received attention at the Annual Convention of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

In the current study, Huber and her team are collaborating with a startup company, Modality AI, which developed the AI platform that will be used in the study.

The application of the technology we are evaluating may lead to far-reaching insights into more standardization in assessments, earlier diagnoses and possibly an easier way to track discrete changes over time to guide interventions, said Andrew Exner, a graduate research assistant in the Motor Speech Lab. My personal research passion, and the mission of our lab, is to find ways to improve the quality of life for people with Parkinsons and other related diseases.

Exner is leading the virtual study for participants across the country to evaluate an AI platform that can collect and automatically measure the speech skills of people with Parkinsons disease. The need for AI platforms is increasing as the use of telepractice explodes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

My interest in speech-language pathology actually started during my training as an actor and opera singer, Exner said. I saw the effects of pathology on the voice and wanted to extend that interest into speech disorders.

SpeechVive Inc. is an Indiana startup company based on Hubers research. The company has developed a wearable medical device to improve the speech clarity of people with Parkinsons.

However, with modern technology, this is no longer the case.

Using a technology known as SOCIP, or Self-Cleaning-in-Place, machines can use powerful ultrasonic sensors and fluorescence optical imaging to track food remains on machinery, as well as microbial debris of the equipment, meaning machines only need to be cleaned when they need to, and only in the parts that need cleaning. While this is a new technology and the current problem of overcleaning, it will still save the UK food industry alone around 100 million pounds a year.

Of course, the food and drink industrys waste aspect is a highly debated and criticized part of the industry. The foodservice industry in the UK alone loses around 2.4 billion in wasted food alone, so its only natural that technology is being used to save this money.

Throughout the worlds supply chains, AI is being used to track every single stage of the manufacturing and supply chain process, such as tracking prices, managing inventory stock levels, and even countries of origin.

Solutions that already exist, such as Symphony Retail AI, uses this information to track transportation costs accurately, all pricing mentioned above, and inventory levels to estimate how much food is needed and where to minimize the waste produced.

No matter where you go in the world, food safety standards are always important to follow, and regulations seem to be becoming stricter all the time. In the US, the Food Safety Modernization Act ensures this happens, especially with COVID-19, and countries become more aware of how contaminated food can be.

Fortunately, robots that use AI and machine learning can handle and process food, basically eliminating the chances that contamination can take place through touch. Robots and machinery cannot transmit diseases and such in a way that humans can, thus minimizing the risk of it becoming a problem.

Even in food testing facilities, robot solutions, such as Next Generation Sequencing, a DNA testing solution for food data capturing, and Electric Noses, a machine solution that tests and records the odors of food, are being used in place for humans for more accurate results. At the time of writing, its estimated that around 30% of the food industry currently works with AI and Machine Learning in this way, although this number is set to grow over the coming years.

Theres no doubt that food production uses a ton of water and resources, especially in the meat and livestock industries. This is extremely unsustainable for the planet and very expensive for the producers. To help curb costs and become more sustainable, AI is being used to manage the power and water consumption needed, thus making it as accurate as possible.

This creates instant benefits to the costs of production and profit margins in all areas of the food and drink sector. When you start adding the ability to manage light sources, food for plants and ingredients, and basically introducing a smart way to grow food at its core, then you really start to see better food, more sustainable production practices, and more profits and savings at each stage of the food chain.

Though there is a lot of buzz around Artificial Intelligence (AI), the traditional computer science engineering (CSE) course seems to be the first choice of JEE toppers. There are a few Indian institutes that offer an on-campus traditional course, including at an undergraduate level, in AI, but not many opt for this. This year too, most toppers, including AIR 2, have opted for computer science. Chirag Falor, who secured the top rank, went to the MIT, US.

Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi, one of the few institutes that offer a full-time BTech course in AI, said that it has seen high-scoring students take admission for this course, but the top rankers still chose the traditional CSE. Ashutosh Brahma, assistant manager (academics), IIIT-Delhi told indianexpress.com, AI is an ongoing trend. Students are opting for AI both at the masters and BTech level. While in MTech, there is more traction than at the undergraduate level. This is because traditionally in Indian education set-up students learn about a broad domain at UG level and go into specification at PG. Likewise, students tend to study CSE at UG and AI at PG level.

He, however, believes the trend is changing. AI is expected to follow the graph of research. Like earlier research education was introduced at masters level and PhD level, now even undergraduate level students are encouraged to study research. Likewise, with AI having multiple facets, its application is more evident, it will be more and more popular for ug courses too. We are slowly seeing the trend, he said.

IIT-Delhi, one of the highest-ranking Indian institutes has introduced a school in AI. However, the courses are offered at a postgraduate level. Prof Mausam, Jai Gupta Chair, Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT-Delhi, who is also the founding head of the School of Artificial Intelligence at the institute, said the lack of courses in AI at UG level stems from the debate among academicians on considering AI as a multidisciplinary field or a field on its own. Some academicians believe that because AI brings in philosophical issues such as cognitive science into the study, the core fundamentals of it are slightly different than computer science and it should be taught as a different field. Others believe that even though AI is a multidisciplinary field its fundamentals are based in CSE, math, and related fields. Those who take the latter approach tend to offer the courses at a masters and a higher level of education.

For institutes like IITs, IIMs, NITs, IIITs, and centrally-funded institutes, online platforms come in handy while offering such courses. Many cite the lack of trained faculty and curated courses as one of the main reasons behind much fewer courses than the demand.

The ed-tech platform has collaborated with over 3700 universities and is serving more than 2.4 million students who have enrolled in 21.4 million courses under Coursera for Campus initiative. Academicians believe that ed-techs can evolve faster than traditional institutes and can offer more courses in the emerging domains. The reason is that in general academia is a little risk-averse. We invest time in finding the relevant material and contextual case studies. We need to learn to evolve at the pace of the industry. And it needs to happen systematically, said Janat Shah, director, IIM-Udaipur. The institute, like several others, has a tie-up with the online platform Coursera to offer online courses in the emerging domain.

The challenge, however, is that the emerging digital fields are changing at a much faster pace than we anticipated, and institutes need to be responsive. At IIM-U, we are also using ed-tech and MOOC, especially for such fields. Institutions will have to develop the competencies to leverage ed-tech for the short and medium-term. The ed-tech can be leveraged systematically to address this problem, he said, adding that tier-II and III cities can leverage more from these platforms.

Is the blockchain vulnerable to hacking by quantum computers? – Moneyweb.co.za

Theres a lingering fear among crypto investors that their bitcoin might get swooped by a hacker.

Thats not very likely, but its not impossible either, particularly once quantum computing gets into the wrong hands. Last year Googles quantum computer called Sycamore was given a puzzle that would take even the most powerful supercomputers 10 000 years to solve and completed it in just 200 seconds, according to Nature magazine.

That kind of processing power unleashed on the bitcoin blockchain which is a heavily encrypted ledger of all bitcoin transactions is a cause for concern.

The encryption technology used by the bitcoin blockchain has proven itself robust enough to withstand any and all attacks. Thats because of its brilliant design, and ongoing improvements by an ever-growing community of open-source cryptographers and developers.

A report by research group Gartner (Hype Cycle for Blockchain Technologies, 2020) suggests blockchain researchers are already anticipating possible attacks by quantum computers that are perhaps five to 10 years away from commercial availability. Its a subject called Postquantum blockchain which is a form of blockchain technology using quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms that can resist attack by future quantum computers.

The good news is that quantum-resistant algorithms are likely to remain several steps ahead of the hackers, but its an issue that is drawing considerable attention in the financial, security and blockchain communities.

Postquantum cryptography is not a threat just yet, but crypto exchanges are going to have to deploy quantum-resistant technologies in the next few years, before quantum computers become generally available.

Phishing is probably a bigger threat

In truth, youre far more likely to be hit by a phishing scam, where identity thieves use emails, text messages and fake websites to get you to divulge sensitive personal information such as bank account or crypto exchange passwords.

As a user, you should be using LastPass or similar software to generate complex passwords, along with two-factor authentication (requiring the input of a time-sensitive code before you can access your crypto exchange account).Most good exchanges are enabled for this level of security.

There are many sad stories of bitcoin theft, but these are usually as a result of weak security on the part of the bitcoin holder, much like leaving your wallet on the front seat of your car while you pop into the shop for a minute.

Like all tech breakthroughs, quantum computing can be used for good and bad.

On the plus side, it will vastly speed drug discovery, molecular modelling and code breaking. It will also be a gift to hackers and online thieves, which is why financial services companies are going to have to invest in defensive technologies to keep customer information and assets safe.

Most crypto exchanges invest substantial amounts in security. The vast majority of crypto assets (about 97%) are stored in encrypted, geographically-separated, offline storage. These cannot be hacked.

The risk emerges when bitcoin are moved from offline (or cold storage) to online, such as when a client is about to transact.

But even here, the level of security is usually robust. A further level of protection is the insurance of all bitcoin that are stored in online systems. They also have systems in place to prevent any employee from making off with clients assets, requiring multiple keys before a bitcoin transaction is authorised.

There have been hacks on crypto exchanges in the past (though not on the blockchain itself), and millions of dollars in crypto assets stolen. In more recent years, this has become less common as exchanges moved to beef up their security systems.

In 2014 Mt.Gox, at the time responsible for about 70% of all bitcoin transactions in the world, suffered an attack when roughly 800000 bitcoin, valued at $460 million, were stolen. In 2018, Japan-based crypto exchange Coincheck was hit with a $534 million fraud impacting 260000 investors.

As the value of bitcoin and other crypto assets increases, the incentive for hackers rises proportionately, which is why problems such as quantum-enabled thievery are already being addressed.

Julian Assange’s partner appeals to Trump to pardon him – The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) Julian Assanges partner, Stella Moris, has tweeted President Donald Trump on Thanksgiving, appealing to him to pardon the WikiLeaks founder.

Moris posted a photo of their two young children on Twitter Thursday and wrote: These are Julians sons Max and Gabriel. They need their father. Our family needs to be whole again.

I beg you, please bring him home for Christmas, she added.

Assange, 49, remains in a high-security British prison cell as he awaits a judges decision about whether he can be sent to the U.S. to face espionage charges.

Moris said he has been confined exclusively to his cell for over a week because of a coronavirus outbreak on his prison block.

Assange attended four weeks of an extradition hearing at Londons Central Criminal Court in September and October. The judge overseeing the case said she would deliver her decision on Jan.4.

U.S. prosecutors have indicted Assange on 17 espionage charges and one charge of computer misuse over WikiLeaks publication of secret American military documents a decade ago. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 175 years in prison.

Assanges defense team argues that he is a journalist and entitled to First Amendment protections for publishing leaked documents that exposed U.S. military wrongdoing in Iraq and Afghanistan. They also say the conditions he would face in a U.S. prison would breach his human rights.

Assange jumped bail in 2012 and sought asylum at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, which ended up becoming his home for seven years before he was evicted and subsequently arrested. He has been in a London prison since April 2019.
