Chinese quantum computer may be the most powerful ever seen – Siliconrepublic.com

This week in future tech, a Chinese quantum computer can reportedly solve a problem in 200 seconds, compared to the 2.5bn years a supercomputer needs.

A quantum computer developed at the University of Science and Technology in Hefei, China, has caught the worlds attention due to what appears to be a performance vastly exceeding others that exist today.

According to findings in published in Scienceand reported by Nature, the new system is allegedly the first definitive demonstration of a quantum advantage using laser beams, which is not mathematically possible using traditional binary computers.

We have shown that we can use photons, the fundamental unit of light, to demonstrate quantum computational power well beyond the classical counterpart, said researcher Jian-Wei Pan.

Tasked with solving the so-called boson sampling problem, the researchers found solutions in as little as 200 seconds. By comparison, it could take Chinas TaihuLight supercomputer about 2.5bn years to do the same.

However, Christian Weedbrook, chief executive of quantum-computing start-up Xanadu, said that unlike Googles Sycamore quantum computer announced last year, the Chinese quantum computer is not programmable. This means that, so far, it cannot be used for solving practical problems.

Scientists from the University of Washington have unveiled a drone that smells, using the power of a moth. Writing in IOP Bioinspiration and Biomimetics, they revealed their Smellicopter design.

The autonomous drone uses a live antenna from a moth to navigate toward smells, while also having the ability to sense and avoid obstacles. A moth uses its antennae to sense chemicals in its environment and navigate toward sources of food or potential mates.

In this case, the researchers used antennae from the Manduca sexta hawkmoth for Smellicopter. The moths were placed in a fridge to anaesthetise them before removing their antennae. Once separated, the live moth antennae could stay chemically active for four hours.

By adding tiny wires into either end of the antenna, the researchers were able to connect it to an electrical circuit and measure the average signal from all of the cells in the antenna. As for what it could smell, Smellicopter could be used to detect things such as gas leaks, explosives and disaster survivors.

From a robotics perspective, this is genius, said Sawyer Fuller of the University of Washington. The classic approach in robotics is to add more sensors, and maybe build a fancy algorithm or use machine learning to estimate wind direction. It turns out, all you need is to add a fin.

German air taxi firm Volocopter said it plans to make regular services a reality in Singapore within the next three years. In October 2019, Volocopter completed the its first air taxi demonstration flight over the Marina Bay area of Singapore and is now looking to obtain the necessary regulatory approvals, including those from Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and the European Union Aviation Safety.

The first route is expected to be a touristic route over the southern waters, offering views of the Marina Bay skyline, and future routes may include cross-border flights. The company is expected to hire over 200 full-time employees in Singapore to manage a network of routes by 2026.

The citys research institutes conducting R&D play an integral part in this, said Florian Reuter, CEO of Volocopter. Topics like route validation for autonomous operations, material science and research regarding battery technology are very important for our long-term business success.

The Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has reported that the number of announced 5G devices has surpassed 500 for the first time. By the end of November this year, there were 519 announced 5G devices, of which 303 were commercially available.

In the last three months, the number of announced 5G devices has grown by 29.4pc, while there has been a 59.5pc increase in the number of commercially available 5G devices over the same period.

This year weve seen more and more symbolically important milestones being passed over 500 announced 5G devices, more than 100 vendors, over 250 different phones, and 100 fixed wireless access CPE devices, said Joe Barrett, president of the GSA.

And it doesnt stop there; we expect more 5G devices to become commercially available, surpassing the 330 mark before the year is out. The device vendor community has stepped up and delivered in the face of unprecedented challenges. As an industry, we can be excited about the opportunities 2021 will bring.

The Upcoming Women In Quantum Summit III And Its Secret 70 Year-Old Legacy – Forbes

Dr. Margareth Arst, an early pioneer for women in science, earned her physics Ph.D. in 1947.

It is well-documented that women are underrepresented in STEM, particularly in physics and quantum, although thankfully it is to a lesser degree today than it was many years ago. In the 1930s and 1940s, some people believed that women didn't have the proper brain structure for scientific investigation. Those opinions and other gender prejudices must have made it difficult for a little-known scientist named Margareth Arst to obtain her doctorate in physics in 1947 at the University of Vienna in Austria. According to NSF data, Dr. Arst was one of about twenty women who earned a Ph.D. in physics that year.

Women are not only underrepresented, they are also notably under-recognized for their achievementsparticularly when it comes to the Nobel prize in physics. In 2018, Donna Strickland was awarded a Nobel prize in physics. She was the first woman to receive the award in 55 years. Since 1901, only two other women have won the Nobel physics award. Marie Curie won it (with her husband) in 1903 for the study of spontaneous radiation. Maria Goeppert won it in 1963 for her shell model of the atomic nucleus.

This chart represents the disparity % between men and women across STEM disciplines.

Compared to men, women are underrepresented at all stages of their careers (bachelor's, doctorate, postdoc, and professor) across nearly every STEM discipline. As shown in the above chart, women are only above parity at the bachelor's and doctorate levels for biological sciences, but below parity at more advanced levels.

Even though women are making progress, the fundamental issue causing the imbalance remains. The American Physical Society conducted a survey in 2019 that revealed physics is the most male-dominated of all STEM fields. One thing is for sure, in 1947, there were no support groups or formal mentor programs to encourage female scientists like Dr. Arst to pursue their intellectual passions. It was a matter of self-determination and personal courage if a woman wanted a Ph.D. at that time.

After she obtained her Ph.D. in 1947, Dr. Arst would have been surprised to learn that 70 years in the future, she would serve as the inspiration for her yet unborn daughter to start a support group for women working in the highly technical field of quantum information technology.

Today, at the age of 96, Dr. Arst is still a role model for her daughter, Denise Ruffner, the founder of Women in Quantum (WIQ).Ruffner previously worked for IBM Quantum, Cambridge Quantum Computing, and she is currently employed by IonQ." I think my comfort of being a woman in science and working in a man's world comes from the fact that my mother was my role model," Ruffner said. "She's 96, and for Christmas, I give her physics textbooks, and she loves it. She's still a complete nerd, and it's really cute."

There were additional reasons Ruffner founded Women in Quantum. She felt that women needed a vehicle to highlight their contributions in quantum. She also wanted to give women access to resources that would amplify their voices in the quantum community. WIQ also offers opportunities to collaborate and have fun with fellow female quantum academics, students, entrepreneurs, investors and government representatives.

I asked Ruffner what first gave her the idea for WIQ. She told me two occurrences made her realize that a group like Women in Quantum was necessary. "I was attending an IBM event several years ago and realized I was the only woman there. IBM believes diversity is important, so afterward, it gave me a mission to actively recruit more women. Later, I also noticed that leadership photos on many company websites were only men. That bothered me, so I decided to do something about it."

Ruffner also sought the advice of her friend, Andr Knig, founder of OneQuantum, the parent organization of WIQ, who said, "I believe that it is vital to democratize Quantum Tech and make it accessible to anyone - no matter their age, gender, ethnicity, education or otherwise."

There are several other support groups for women scientists besides WIQ. For example, IBM sponsors a group called the Watson Women's Network, a community of technical staff, primarily based at the T.J. Watson Research Center. The group encourages a workplace environment that advances the professional effectiveness, individual growth, recognition and advancement of all women at IBM Research. The WWN also partners with senior management, human resources, and other diversity network groups to promote mentoring, networking, diversity, knowledge-sharing and recruiting.

Summit III will end each day with a virtual cocktail hour to connect attendees with each other on a one-on-one basis for discussion and relationship building.

Ruffner said the cocktail hour allows you to meet people you wouldn't otherwise get to know and it provides a way to expand your network. "It's also fun because you are randomly matched with people. Your bio comes up with your picture and their bio also pops up and you talk to each other for five minutes. After that, you are sent to a queue where you are matched to someone else."

Summit III will also feature Anisha Musti, a 15-year-old New York City high school student. Anisha Musti is the CEO and founder of a quantum company called Q-munity. Her company is a 501c3 nonprofit striving to connect and teach young people about quantum computing.

The Summit III keynote speakers are:

Waters Tells Biden to Rescind OCC Crypto Guidance; May Be Part of Anti-Trump, Anti-Crypto Offensive – Yahoo Finance

TipRanks

Its been up, up, and away for the markets since the end of September. Both the NASDAQ and S&P 500 are trading within 3% of their recent record high levels, after counting for daily fluctuations. Its a clear sign of a bullish mood among investors. And that bullish mood is finding fertile soil among Wall Streets stock analysts, who are not hesitant to make buy-side calls. There are some indications that the analysts are hedging their bets, however, as among the recent Buy reviews published several also offer strong dividend yields.Return-minded investors can find a degree of safety in high-yielding equities. The advantage of such a fundamentally defensive strategy is obvious: stocks that are rising now will bring the immediate gains of share appreciation, while strong dividends will provide a steady income stream regardless of market conditions.Using the data available in theTipRanks database, weve pulled up three stocks with high yields from 7% to 9%. Even better, these stocks are seen as Strong Buys by Wall Streets analysts. Lets find out why.Energy Transfer LP (ET)First up is Energy Transfer, a major name in North Americas hydrocarbon midstream sector. The companys primary network of assets covers 38 states and links three major oil and gas production regions in the Midwest-Appalachian and Texas-Oklahoma-Louisiana regions, along with North Dakota. Energy Transfer has smaller assets in the Colorado Rockies, Florida, and northern Alberta. These assets include pipelines, terminals, and storage tanks for natural gas and crude oil. The value of ETs services is clear from the companys $18 billion market cap and $54 billion in annual revenues. That value, along with the effects of the health and economic crises of 2020, are also clear from the companys recent third quarter earnings release. On the negative side, revenues were down 26% from the year-ago quarter, while EPS was down 18%. In absolute numbers, the top line came in at $9.96 million while the bottom line was reported at 30 cents per share. Both figures beat the forecasts by a wide margin.Beating the forecasts was a positive note. On another, the company reported $400 million in cost savings year-to-date, due to initiatives to control and streamline expenses. Total debt long-term debt remained stable at $54 million. In an announcement at the end of October, Energy Transfer declared its Q3 dividend, at 15.25 cents per common share. This was a 50% reduction from previous payments, and implemented for several reasons. Chief among those reasons is releasing cash for debt reduction. The dividend reduction also keeps the dividend yield in line with historical values (with the shares down this year, the yield was artificially inflated), and affordable at current income levels. The new dividend payment annualizes to 61 cents per common share, and even after the reduction gives a high yield of 8.8%.Covering the stock for Raymond James, analyst Justin Jenkins noted, We still see ET's top-tier integrated midstream footprint as a big positive, but risks are high and will remain so. Ultimately, we believe the core business and long-term free cash flow generation (which will improve dramatically in 2021) will help ET differentiate itself within the midstream space ET's large valuation discount to peers is unlikely to completely narrow in the near-term, we see the risk/reward as skewing positive in most scenarios. In line with these comments, Jenkins rates ET a Strong Buy, and his $9 price target suggests it has room for 26% growth in the year ahead. (To watch Jenkins track record, click here)Wall Street appears to be in broad agreement with Jenkins, as ET shares maintain a Strong Buy rating from the analyst consensus. There have been 8 recent reviews, including 7 Buys and a single Hold. The stocks $9.29 average price target is slightly more bullish than the Raymond James position, implying ~31% upside potential from the $7.09 trading price. (See ET stock analysis on TipRanks)Omega Healthcare (OHI)REITs are frequently known for high-yielding dividends, as tax regulations require these companies to return a minimum percentage of profits back to investors. Omega Healthcare, a real estate investment trust, is no different from its peers in that regard, but it does offer investors a twist. The companys portfolio consists of skilled nursing facilities and senior housing facilities, in an 83% to 17% split. The portfolio is valued at more than $10 billion. It totals 957 facilities in 40 states plus the UK.At the top line, Omega reported declines in Q3 revenues. The $119 million reported was down 53% sequentially and 16% year-over-year. That was the bad news. Adjusted funds from operations (FFO), a common metric used to judge REITs income levels, beat the forecast by 5%, coming in at 82 cents per share. In other positive notes this year, Omega has reported collected 99% of rents due in each quarter of 2020, and successfully issued, this past October, $700 million in Senior Notes at 3.375% and due in 2031. The company aims to use the funds raised to, first, repay existing debt, and second, to cover general operations.Omega currently pays out a 67-cent dividend per common share, and as held that payment steady for nearly three years. The company has a 6-year history of reliable dividend payments. The annualized payment is $2.68 per common share, making the yield 7.1%. This companys performance, including the reliable dividend, prompted JMP analyst Aaron Hecht to rate OHI an Outperform (i.e. Buy). His $43 price target indicates a 14% upside over the next 12 months. (To watch Hechts track record, click here)Backing his stance, Hecht writes, We believe COVID-19 vaccine deliveries will begin to arrive within the next two weeks and skilled nursing facility residents will be prioritized, based on vulnerability. We view this as a major positive for OHI as the largest owner of skilled nursing facilities in the United States. Although OHIs tenants have generally performed well during the pandemic, an increase in demand would be a derisking event We believe OHI deserves a slight premium to its three-year, pre-pandemic comps given demand tailwinds. We are buyers of the stock In the meantime, OHI has a Strong Buy rating from the analyst consensus, based on 8 reviews breaking down to 6 Buys and 2 Holds. Omegas share price has risen 28% since the first week of November, in the wake of the Q3 earnings. This has pushed the stocks trading price, currently $37.69, slightly above the $36.88 average price target. (See OHI stock analysis on TipRanks)Owl Rock Capital Corporation (ORCC)Last but not least is Owl Rock Capital, a specialty finance company based in New York. Owl Rock works in the middle-market finance sector, offering access to capital for mid-market companies to make acquisitions, fund operations, and conduct recapitalizations. The companys portfolio boasts $10.2 billion in total assets, of which 97% are senior secured assets. Owl Rock has current investments in 110 companies.Owl Rocks third quarter earnings came in slightly below expectations. EPS was 33 cents per share, down 3% sequentially and missing the estimates by 2 cents. Net asset value per share increased 1% quarter-over-quarter, from $14.52 at the end of June to $14.67 at the end of September. In a move to shore up liquidity, Owl Rock priced a public offering of $1 billion in 3.4% notes in the first week of December. The issue is due in 2026, and provides funds to paydown existing debt in the revolving credit facility and to fund general operations. Also in the first week of this month, Owl Creek confirmed that it is discussions to acquire Dyal Capital. The move would combine Owl Creeks direct lending platform with Dyals access to capital solutions.Owl Creek has a regular share dividend payment of 31 cents quarterly, which has been supplemented since May 2019 by a series of 6 special 8-cent dividend payments. Calculating the yield by the regular dividend, we find it at 9.6%, based on an annualized rate of $1.24 per common share. For comparison, the average dividend among S&P-listed companies stands at 2%.The review here was written by Devin Ryan, 5-star analyst with JMP Securities. Focusing on the Dyal Capital announcement, Ryan noted, While it is important to distinguish that this merger is between the management companies, not the BDC directly, and ultimately we do not expect much change, we do think a transaction could represent a positive outcome for ORCC shareholders over time.""We continue to view the opportunity in ORCC shares as attractive due to: 1) strong credit performance and expectations; 2) a well-positioned balance sheet; 3) the earnings scale-up as leverage moves to the target 1.0x by 2H21; and 4) an increase in the yield profile of the portfolio through a higher mix of unitranche loans," the analyst concluded. To this end, Ryan rates Owl Creeks shares an Outperform (i.e. Buy), and his $14.50 price target suggests a 13% upside in the coming year. (To watch Ryans track record, click here)Owl Creeks Strong Buy consensus rating is based on 6 reviews. These show a 5 to 1 split between Buys and Holds. ORCC is trading at $12.78, and its $13.90 average price target implies ~9% upside. Waters Tells Biden to Rescind OCC Crypto Guidance; May Be Part of Anti-Trump, Anti-Crypto Offensive - Yahoo Finance

In the End We Will All Pay for the Cowardice of the Liberal Class – Common Dreams

Liberals who express dismay, or more bizarrely a fevered hope, about the corporatists and imperialists selected to fill the positions in the Biden administration are the court jesters of our political burlesque. They long ago sold their soul and abandoned their most basic principlesto line up behind a bankrupt Democratic Party. They chant, with every election cycle, the mantra of the least worst and sit placidly on the sidelines as a Bill Clinton or a Barack Obama and the Democratic Party leadership betray every issue they claim to support.

The only thing that mattered to liberals in the presidential race, once again, was removing a Republican, this time Donald Trump, from office. This, the liberals achieved. But their Faustian bargain, in election after election, has shredded their credibility. They are ridiculed, not only among right-wing Trump supporters but by the hierarchy of the Democratic Party that has been captured by corporate power. No one can, or should, take liberals seriously. They stand for nothing. They fight for nothing. The cost is too onerous. And so, the liberals do what they always do, chatter endlessly about political and moral positions they refuse to make any sacrifices to achieve.

The Biden administration resembles the ineffectual German government formed by Franz von Papen in 1932 that sought to recreate theancien rgime, a utopian conservatism that ensured Germanys drift into fascism.Liberals, largely comprised of the professional managerial-class that dutifully recycles and shops for organic produce and is concentrated on the two coasts, have profited from the ravages of neoliberalism. They seek to endow it with a patina of civility. But their routine and public humiliation has ominous consequences. It not only exposes the liberal class as hollow and empty, it discredits the liberal democratic values they claim to uphold. Liberals should have abandoned the Democratic Party when Bill Clinton and political hacks such as Biden transformed the Democratic Party into the Republican Party and launched a war on traditional liberal values and left-wing populism. They should have defected by the millions to support Ralph Nader and other Green Party candidates.

This defection, as Nader understood, was theonlytactic that could force the Democrats to adopt parts of a liberal and left-wing agenda and save us from the slow-motion corporate coup dtat. Fear is the real force behind political change, not oily promises of mutual goodwill. Short of this pressure, this fear, especially with labor unions destroyed, there is no hope. Now we will reap the consequences of the liberal classs moral and political cowardice.

The Democratic Party elites revel in taunting liberals as well as the left-wing populists who preach class warfare and supported Bernie Sanders. How are we supposed to interpret the appointment of Antony Blinken, one of the architects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and supporter of the apartheid state of Israel, as Secretary of State? Or John Kerry, who championed the massive expansion of domestic oil and gas production, largely through fracking, and, according to Barack Obamas memoir, worked doggedly to convince those concerned about the climate crisis to offer up concessions on subsidies for the nuclear power industry and the opening of additional U.S. coastlines to offshore oil drilling as the new climate policy czar? Or Brian Deese, the executive who was in charge of the climate portfolio at BlackRock, which invests heavily in fossil fuels, including coal, and who served as a former Obama economic adviser who advocated austerity measures, to run the White Houses economic policy? Or Neera Tanden, for director of the Office of Management and Budget, who as president of the Center for American Progress raised millions in dark money from Silicon Valley and Wall Street while relentlessly ridiculing Bernie Sanders and his supporters on cable news and social media and who proposed a plank in the Democratic platform calling for bombing Iran?

The Biden administration resembles the ineffectual German government formed by Franz von Papen in 1932 that sought to recreate theancien rgime, a utopian conservatism that ensured Germanys drift into fascism. Biden, bereft like von Papen of new ideas and programs, will eventually be forced to employ the brutal tools Biden as a senator was so prominent in creating to maintain social control wholesale surveillance, a corrupt judicial system, the worlds largest prison system and police that have been transformed into lethal paramilitary units of internal occupation. Those that resist as social unrest mounts will be attacked as agents of a foreign power and censored, as many already are being censored, including through algorithms and deplatforming on social media. The most ardent and successful dissidents, such as Julian Assange, will be criminalized.

The shock troops of the state, already ideologically bonded with the neofascists on the right, will hunt down and wipe out an enfeebled and often phantom left, as we saw in the chilling state assassination by U.S. Marshals of the antifa activist Michael Reinoehl, who was unarmed and standing outside an apartment complex in Lacey, Washington, in September when he was shot multiple times. I witnessed this kind of routine state terror during the war in El Salvador. Reinoehl allegedly killed Aaron Danielson, a member of the far-right group Patriot Prayer during a pro-Trump rally in Portland, Oregon in August.

We stand on the cusp of a frightening authoritarianism. Social unrest, given a continuation of neoliberalism, the climate crisis, the siphoning off of diminishing resources to the bloated war machine, political stagnation and the failure to contain the pandemic and its economic fallout, is almost certain.

Compare the gunning down of Reinoehl by federal agents to the coddling of Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old accused of killing two protesters and injuring a third on August 25 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Police officers, moments before the shooting, are seen on video thanking Rittenhouse and other armed right-wing militia member for coming to the city and handing them bottles of water. Rittenhouse is also seen in a video walking toward police with his hands up after his shooting spree as protesters yell that he had shot several people. Police, nevertheless, allow him to leave. Rittenhouses killings have been defended by the right, including Trump. Rittenhouse, who has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations for his legal fees, has been released on $2 million bail.

Absent a left-wing populism, a disenfranchised working class will line up, as it did with Trump, behind its counterfeit, a right-wing populism. The liberal elites will, if history is any guide, justify state repression as a response to social chaos in the name of law and order. That they, too, are on the Christian Right and the corporate states long list of groups to be neutralized will become evident to them when it is too late.

It was Friedrich Ebert and the Social Democratic Party of Germany, siding with the conservatives and nationalists, that created the Freikorps, private paramilitary groups composed of demobilized soldiers and malcontents. The Freikorps ruthlessly crushed left-wing uprisings in Berlin, Bremen, Brunswick, Hamburg, Halle, Leipzig, Silesia, Thuringia and the Ruhr. When the Freikorps was not gunning down left-wing populists in the streets and carrying out hundreds of political assassinations, including the murder of Walther Rathenau, the foreign minister, it was terrorizing civilians, looting and pillaging. The Freikorps became the antecedent of the Nazi Brownshirts, led by Ernst Rhm, a former Freikorps commander.

All the pieces are in place for our own descent into what I suspect will be a militarized Christianized fascism. Political dysfunction, a bankrupt and discredited liberal class, massive and growing social inequality, a grotesquely rich and tone-deaf oligarchic elite, the fragmentation of the public into warring tribes, widespread food insecurity and hunger, chronic underemployment and unemployment and misery, all exacerbated by the failure of the state to cope with the crisis of the pandemic, combine with the rot of civil and political life to create a familiar cocktail leading to authoritarianism and fascism.

Trump and the Republican Party, along with the shrill incendiary voices on right-wing media, play the role the antisemitic parties played in Europe during the late 19thand early 20thcentury. The infusion of anti-Semitism into the political debate in Europe destroyed the political decorum and civility that is vital to maintaining a democracy. Racist tropes and hate speech, as in Weimar Germany, now poison our political discourse. Ridicule and cruel taunts are hurled back and forth. Lies are interchangeable with fact. Those who oppose us are demonized as human embodiments of evil.

This poisonous discourse is only going to get worse, especially with millions of Trump supporters convinced the election was rigged and stolen. The German Social Democrat Kurt Schumacher in the 1930s said that fascism is a constant appeal to the inner swine in human beings and succeeds by mobilizing human stupidity. This mobilized stupidity, accompanied by what Rainer Maria Rilke called the evil effluvium from the human swamp, is being amplified and intensified in the siloed media chambers of the right. This hate-filled rhetoric eschews reality to cater to the desperate desire for emotional catharsis, for renewed glory and prosperity and for acts of savage vengeance against the phantom enemies blamed for our national debacle.

The constant barrage of vitriol and fabulist conspiracy theories will, I fear, embolden extremists to carry out political murder, not only of mainstream Democrats, Republicans Trump has accused of betrayal such as Georgia governor Brian Kemp and those targeted as part of the deep state, but also those at media outlets such as CNN or The New York Times that serve as propaganda arms of the Democratic Party. Once the Pandoras box of violence is opened it is almost impossible to close. Martyrs on one side of the divide demand martyrs on the other side. Violence becomes the primary form of communication. And, as Sabastian Haffner wrote, once the violence and readiness to kill that lies beneath the surface of human nature has been awakened and turned against other humans, and even made into a duty, it is a simple matter to change the target.

This, I suspect, is what is coming. The blame lies not only with the goons and racists on the right, the corporatists who pillage the country and the corrupt ruling elite that does their bidding, but a feckless liberal class that found standing up for its beliefs too costly. The liberals will pay for their timidity and cowardice, but so will we.

Tulsi Gabbard’s Introduced a Bill Targeting Trans Athletes as She’s Set to Leave Congress – Teen Vogue

Representative Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), the failed 2020 presidential contender, introduced a new bill that critics say is a blatant attempt to legislate anti-transgender discrimination. The so-called Protect Womens Sports Act seeks to dictate that participation in gender-segregated high school and college athletics on the basis of what Gabbard calls biological sex a term frequently used to mean the gender assigned to someone at birth.

Title IX led to a generational shift that impacted countless women, creating life-changing opportunities for girls and women that never existed before, Gabbard wrote in a statement. However, Title IX is being weakened by some states who are misinterpreting Title IX, creating uncertainty, undue hardship, and lost opportunities for female athletes.

Our legislation protects Title IXs original intent which was based on the general biological distinction between men and women athletes based on sex, she continued. It is critical that the legacy of Title IX continues to ensure women and girls in sports have the opportunity to compete and excel on a level playing field.

If it somehow became federal law, Gabbards bill could make it impossible for trans women to participate in womens sports. The bill resembles state-level efforts to legislate trans exclusion from sports. School athletics have become one of the latest legal battlegrounds in the conservative war on trans people, which is itself an incarnation of a larger long-term legal movement targeting LGBTQ+ people. Support for those efforts from inside the government is nothing new.

For the bill, Gabbard partnered with Representative Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), one of the House Republicans to offer his support to President Donald Trumps latest effort at an attempted coup.

Gabbard, who made herself a Democratic Party pariah earlier this year by neglecting to vote to impeach Trump, has a history that LGBTQ+ communities have raised concerns about. As Teen Vogue reported back in January 2019, when Gabbard entered the 2020 Democratic primary: In the early 2000s, she worked with her fathers anti-gay organization, a fact that is generating some attention, as CNN reported. As Gabbard was coming of age (she was first elected at 21), it was in the shadow of her fathers work to advocate for conversion therapy and pass a Hawaiian constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. CNN noted that Gabbard has since apologized to Hawaiian LGBTQ+ activists and reversed her position favoring traditional marriage (aka, banning gay marriage).

Gabbard is in the final days of her current term as the representative for Hawaiis second district after deciding not to run for re-election in 2020. Her seat will be filled by Representative-elect Kai Kahele, who will be the second-ever Native Hawaiian to represent the state in Congress.

Meet COVID: It loves parties, the holidays and everyone: Alberta ad – CTV Edmonton

EDMONTON -- COVID-19 loves parties, Dr. Deena Hinshaw has said before.

And now, theres an ad for that.

The Alberta government posted two videos, Covid Loves Parties and Covid Loves the Holidays, on a new website called covidloves.ca.

Covid Loves Parties shows a man wearing a COVID-19 electron mask going into a house party, high-fiving people and dancing with a woman, nearly kissing her.

In Covid Loves Christmas, a family is gathered around a living room when someone also wearing a coronavirus electron mask, or the disease, comes in with dessert, dips into the eggnog, and gives a gift to a young family member.

Nobody loves a holiday gathering more than COVID, the ad reads at the end, as the family eats dinner together.

MEET COVID, covidloves.ca reads. I love life! Going to all the places, doing all the things and spreading the fun to everyone. Bring me to your next get-together, Id love to meet your friends and family.

They dont call me the ultimate plus one for nothing. Im on every guest list. Nobody puts me in a corner.

When Premier Jason Kenney introduced new COVID-19 restrictions including banning indoor and outdoor gatherings for at least four weeks Tuesday, he said Christmas parties would have to be kept to people who live together or the two close contacts allowed.

Here is the hard truth: Clearly the biggest single source of viral transmission is at-home gatherings, Kenney said. Its when we let our guard down, its when we relax with people were close to and its when transmission most easily happens. And so, if we relax the public health measures to permit large family gatherings in just three weeks time, we will without a shadow of a doubt, see a large increase in hospitalizations and fatalities. We simply cannot let this Christmas turn into a tragedy for many families.

The new government website lists the usual guidelines to prevent spread: no social gatherings, avoiding travel, staying home when sick, getting tested, wearing a mask, sanitizing and maintaining a physical distance.

Alberta has 20,163 active COVID-19 cases and 682 patients in hospital.

Like Our Society, Instagram Is Biased Against Women Of Colour – Refinery29

The minute we apply the intersections of race, disability and sexuality, censorship seems to increase and it gets harder and harder to exist on Instagram. Algorithms are key to content moderation. They are supposed to inform and protect us but, sadly, we know that hasnt always worked in recent years (see the dissemination of fake news or far-right content online). For some time, there has been a feeling that Facebook policies (Facebook, of course, owns Instagram) which are intended to "remove and reduce" problematic content are actually doing more harm to marginalised groups. Sometimes this comes in the form of censorship like that which I have experienced and sometimes it comes in the form of "shadow banning". This is where images are not explicitly deleted from the platform but, instead, are hidden from users by the algorithm and never shown on Instagrams explore page. In short, the platform has begun to feel actively biased against the accounts of women and, in particular, women who arent white, as well as plus-size, trans and queer accounts.

New COVID-19 restrictions: Alberta bans all gatherings, closes most businesses and makes masks mandatory – CTV News Edmonton

EDMONTON -- Alberta is banning all social gatherings, closing restaurants, gyms and hair salons, and making masks mandatory across the province to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Premier Jason Kenney introduced the new restrictions along with Health Minister Tyler Shandro, Jobs, Economy and Innovation Minister Doug Schweitzer and Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw, as Alberta added 1,727 new coronavirus cases and nine deaths Tuesday.

The premier said the new rules were a last resort, but necessary to slow down the spread of the disease.

We know that if we allow viral spread at current growth rates, we will eventually run out of hospital capacity, Kenney said, adding there are currently 654 Albertans with COVID-19 in hospital, including 112 in ICU. That is not an opinion, it is a fact.

The limits on indoor and outdoor social gatherings and province-wide mandatory mask mandate are effective Tuesday.

Close contacts are limited to within homes, and people who live alone can still have up to two close contacts.

The following restrictions are effective Sunday, Dec. 13, starting at 12:01 a.m.:

RESTAURANTS, RETAIL AND PLACES OF WORSHIP

Restaurants, bars and cafes will be closed to in-person services, but takeout, curbside pickup and deliveries will be allowed.

Many restaurants and similar operations have told us that theyve closed because they cannot pay their own bills right now, Kenney said. This will allow them to fully access federal supports and provincial supports as we get through the difficult following weeks.

Schweitzer said small and medium businesses can get another $15,000 as part of a provincial relaunch grant. The government handed out $5,000 in the spring, and businesses who didnt apply then can get the full $20,000 in support.

Other businesses closing also include: hair and nail salons, fitness and recreation centres, pools, arenas, libraries, museums and casinos.

Outdoor recreation is permitted with people in the same household.

Some health services, such as physiotherapy, acupuncture, shelters for the vulnerable and emergency services, will remain open.

Retail stores, and malls, can remain open but at 15 per cent capacity, and curbside pickup and delivery services will be allowed.

Malls must be limited to commercial visits by customers, not be used as a place to hangout or socialize with friends, Kenney said.

Religious gatherings will also be capped at 15 per cent. The province encourages virtual or online services.

Also starting Sunday, the government is making it mandatory to work from home for those able to do so.

The new restrictions do not affect schools, the premier said.

HERE IS THE HARD TRUTH

The restrictions will be in place for at least four weeks, meaning Albertans are not allowed to visit their family during the holidays.

The premier says, with great reluctance, that holiday gatherings must be kept to members of the same household or the two close contacts for people who live alone.

Kenney did say Albertas R-value, or the rate of transmission, has stabilized just below 1.2, but added cases, hospitalizations and deaths are still rising.

The provinces positivity rate is 9.41 per cent and Alberta has reported an average of 1,785 cases this week, Hinshaw said. There are 20,388 active infections.

Today we are asking to do even more, and while that may be overwhelming, it is what needs to be done. There is no other option, she said.

Hinshaw will give another COVID-19 update Wednesday afternoon.

Alberta has reported 72,028 cases, 51,000 recoveries and 640 deaths since March.

O’Brien leaves meeting unscathed, calls for pause on gay conversion laws – The Age

Mr O'Brien, speaking as he emerged unscathed from a much-anticipated meeting of his MPs, said "the idea you can change someone's sexuality by converting them is just nonsense".

"We had a very, very thorough discussion in the party room ... There is absolute support for the idea of banning these sorts of coercive conversion therapies. There is no place for that in Australia in 2020," he said.

"There have been concerns raised about aspects of the bill. The impact of the role of parents and their children. Impacts on the role of faith communities and their ability to teach their religions.

"We're going to call on the government to just pause on the bill and use this summer to consult with those communities ... There are legitimate questions raised by people who all agree conversion therapy should be outlawed."

Mr O'Brien declined to say whether the party would allow a conscience vote and said the party reserved its position on the bill in the upper house where the government will need opposition or crossbench support.

The Liberal leader fronted the first in-person meeting of Liberal MPs since the start of the pandemic on Tuesday morning. It was held in person rather than via Zoom after five right-wing backbenchers demanded Mr OBrien hold the meeting in person.

The meeting was mostly collegiate and Mr O'Brien's leadership was backed before the gathering by senior frontbench colleagues David Davis, an ally of the leader, and Tim Smith, who has a frosty relationship with the Opposition Leader.

"It was great to be able to get everyone in the same room. We had a very positive, very constructive meeting. It was a great way to finish off the year," Mr O'Brien said.

The Liberal MPs have a strategy session on Friday to discuss the party's plans for 2021. Shadow cabinet MPs will meet for an end-of-year dinner and the whole party room will meet for another dinner during the last parliamentary sitting week of the year.

Speaking before the meeting, Mr Smith, who has a frosty relationship with Mr O'Brien, gave one-word answers as reporters asked whether he had confidence in the party leader, whether he would face a spill motion on Tuesday and whether he would be toppled next year, answering them, respectively, yes, no, and no.

Ahead of Tuesday's meeting, former federal Liberal vice-president and influential party figure Karina Okotel a religious hardliner emailed all Victorian Liberal state MPs suggesting it should be legal for people to attend prayer groups to reverse their sexuality but illegal for extreme medical measures such as shock therapy to be used to achieve the same ends.

The Andrews government laws would ban both methods.

In his reply to the email, which he sent to all the recipients of Ms Okotel's original message, Mr Smith asked Mr OBrien why she had not been expelled from the party.

Ms Okotel is filing an official complaint to the Liberal Partys administration alleging Mr Smiths email amounted to bullying and harassment.

Party branch members also received text messages from Ms Okotel urging them to email Liberal MPs asking them to oppose the laws.

Mr Smith said that Ms Okotel was trying to browbeat MPs to oppose the laws and said Liberals should not allow a conscience vote on the matter.

I think this is pretty cut and dry. I think that you are what you are, he said.

I read reports about people praying or somesuch to stop people from being gay or some rubbish. I mean this is nonsense ... you are what you are.

Loading

"I prayed 20 years ago that I'd be six foot four Im five foot 10.

This is actually quite insane. Its demented. You are what you are

"We are all made in the image of God. Can I make that point as a very very bad Anglican.
