Julian Assange to Make His Modeling Debut

Julian Assange may not have intended to make a name for himself in fashion, but the WikiLeaks founder has found friends in the industry.

Two years ago, Dame Vivienne Westwood crafted an "I am Julian Assange" t-shirt to close her fashion show in London. The piece was said to demonstrate her support for the controversial public figure.

Now, her son has done one better. Ben Westwood has tapped Assange himself to appear in his September runway show alongside six other models. The collection will feature ensembles inspired by Clint Eastwood's spaghetti western films, a soundtrack lifted from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and at least one custom "Julian Assange print" garment. George Clooney and fiancee Amal Alamuddin have reportedly been invited to attend.

Westwood told the Daily Mail that he conceived of the unlikely gig to "highlight Julian Assange's plight" and ensure that Assange does not "slip into obscurity" more than two years after he first sought asylum at the Ecuadorian Embassy.

"What happened to him is totally unfair," Westwood said.

As Assange must stay put in order to evade extradition to Sweden on charges of sexual assault, Westwood will bring the catwalk to his de facto residence in London. And while press conferences held at the building suggest a challenging aesthetic, low ceilings, moderate acoustics, and fluorescent lighting sound very "bureaucracy chic" to us.

Assange offered London Fashion Week spot

Julian Assange has been asked to star in a fashion show by British designer Ben Westwood at Ecuador's London embassy, where the WikiLeaks founder is currently holed up in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden.

Former erotic photographer Westwood, son of legendary British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, wants "good looking" Assange, 42, to appear with six other models as part of a fringe event during London Fashion Week in September.

"Julian is a popular hero," the designer said in a statement given to AFP.

"He has done a great deal to change public opinion.

"Through WikiLeaks people have been able to compare the facts with the official version of the story.

"He is a good looking man and I hope he is going to model," he added.

Mother Vivienne is also a keen supporter of Assange, and wore a T-shirt carrying the slogan "I am Julian Assange" when she paid him a visit at the embassy in 2012.

Other celebrities to visit Assange include Lady Gaga and director Oliver Stone.

Hollywood A-lister George Clooney has been invited to the show, which is inspired by Clint Eastwood's costume in the spaghetti western films, according to Westwood's PR spokesman.

Assange first sought refuge at the embassy on June 19, 2012, to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is under investigation on allegations of sexual assault.

Julian Assange to model at London Fashion Week

The fugitive WikiLeaks founder will model clothing for Ben Westwood, son of Vivienne, at an event during September's London Fashion Week

BY Bibby Sowray | 26 June 2014

Yes, you read the headline correctly; Julian Assange will model during September's London Fashion Week.

The WikiLeaks founder will model for Ben Westwood, son of Dame Vivienne, who will showcase the latest collection from his eponymous brand.

The show will take place at Assange's current residence, the Ecuadorian embassy in London's Knightsbridge, where 'celebrity guests' - rumoured to include George Clooney and his lawyer fiance, who has acted on Assange's defence team - will be served Ferrero Roche.

Speaking to The Telegraph this morning, Westwood said much of the details are still to be confirmed but that due to the size constraints of the embassy the event will not be a formal catwalk affair but more of a "dress up, mill about and have a drink".

"The point is to promote Julian Assange," he says.

Contrary to other reports, Westwood's camouflage-heavy collection hasn't been inspired by Assange but instead his personal love of camping and the outdoors, and Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

The idea to involve Assange in the show came about a couple of months ago when Westwood was talking with his PR representative, Richard Hillgrove, about the 42-year-old's case. Hillgrove then duly set about organising the tie-up, though Westwood is yet to actually meet Assange or visit the embassy.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is planning to take part in London Fashion Week as a model

Julian Assange is still cocking a snook at the establishment. The Australian founder of WikiLeaks, who has cost the British taxpayer 6million in police bills since seeking asylum in the Ecuadorean Embassy two years ago, continues to receive celebrity visitors such as Lady Gaga and hold press conferences via video link.

But in his most brazen move yet, I hear he is planning to take part in London Fashion Week as a model.

Assange, wanted for extradition to Sweden on sex assault charges, will not even have to risk arrest by leaving his bolt-hole, as the catwalk is coming to him.

German government to drop Verizon over NSA spying fears

(Don Ryan/Associated Press)

Reports of U.S. spying on German citizens -- including German Chancellor Angela Merkel -- caused outrage in the European nationlast year after a wave of revelations from former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. It even led to German parliamentaryhearings on the issue, which started this spring.

And now the German government is ending itscontractwith Verizon over fears the telecom provider could be letting U.S. intelligence agencies snoop on sensitive communications, the Associated Press reports.

"There are indications that Verizon is legally required to provide certain things to the NSA, and that's one of the reasons the cooperation with Verizon won't continue," German Interior Ministry spokesman Tobias Plate told AP. Verizon has provided Internet service to a number of German government departments but not intelligence to agencies according to Plate.

Germany's current contract with Verizon will expire in 2015, he said.

"Verizon Germany is a German company, and we comply with German law," saidVerizon Germany managing director Detlef Eppig in a statement, which also referred questions to a post on the company's policy blog that it says outlines "the inability of the US Government to access customer data stored outside the US."

While various officials, including Merkel, have expressed concern about U.S. spying, a report from German magazine Der Spiegel last week suggested a close relationship between the NSA and German intelligenceagencies.
