2017 Japan Prize Honors Trailblazers in Life Science and … – PR Newswire (press release)

TOKYO, Feb. 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --Central to its deep commitment to honor the most innovative and meaningful advances worldwide, The Japan Prize Foundation today announced the laureates of the 2017 Japan Prize, who have pushed the envelope in their respective fields of Life Sciences and Electronics, Information and Communication. Three scientists are being recognized with the 2017 Japan Prize for original and outstanding achievements that not only contribute to the advancement of science and technology, but also promote peace and prosperity for all mankind.

Emmanuelle Charpentier, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin, Germany, and visiting professor at Ume University, Sweden, and Jennifer Doudna, Professor of Chemistry and of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, are being honored for deciphering the molecular details of the type II bacterial immune system CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats)-Cas and the creation of the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing system, a truly revolutionary technique in genetic engineering, far more economical and faster than those previously available.

This overwhelmingly simple technique enables scientists to cut the DNA of any organism at arbitrary locations and edit freely by means of removing, replacing or insertion. It was adopted at an explosive pace as a research tool in the life sciences, and is now being applied to research in a wide range of fields, such as agriculture, biofuels, drug development and medicine, and in the future, may make it possible to correct mutations at precise locations in the human genome to treat and cure genetic causes of disease.

Together, Charpentier and Doudna received the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences; the 2015 Gruber Foundation International Prize in Genetics; the 2015 Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research; and the L'Oreal Unesco for Women in Science Award 2016.

The advent of open digital networks, namely the Internet, has enabled us to lead infinitely more convenient lives. The ease and comfort which we take for granted today has been made possible due to security measures that prevent the theft and manipulation of valuable data. It is Dr. Adi Shamir who proposed many of the these underlying concepts in information security and developed a series of practical solutions.

Dr. Shamir is the Borman Professor of Computer Science at the Weizmann Institute in Israel and an internationally-recognized cryptographer. His achievements range from the development of the "RSA cryptosystem," an innovative encryption technique utilizing mathematical methodology, to the proposal of the "secret sharing scheme," which ensures secrecy by breaking up classified information into parts and dispersing it among several individuals; the "identification and signature schemes" through which individuals can be identified without revealing secret information; and the generic "differential cryptanalysis," which deciphers common key cryptosystems.

Dr. Shamir has also made significant breakthroughs in the research of side-channel attacks, which decipher code by monitoring the physical information of the computer carrying out the encryption, such as power consumption and noise. By developing cryptosystems which form the basis of information security, Dr. Shamir has paved the way to the fast and convenient open digital network environment that we take for granted today. These remarkable achievements have transformed cryptography into the modern academic discipline of cryptology.

To honor Professor Charpentier, Dr. Doudna, and Dr. Shamir, the Japan Prize Foundation will host an award ceremony on April 19, 2017 in Tokyo. Each laureate will receive a certificate of recognition and a commemorative gold medal. A cash award of 50 million Japanese yen (approximately US $420,000) will also be given to each laureate. The Japan Prize is highly competitive: the nomination process ends in February, and, every year from March to November, the Foundation considers the nominations of 13,000 prominent scientists and researchers from around the world.

About the Japan Prize FoundationThe Japan Prize is awarded to scientists and researchers, regardless of nationality, who have made significant contributions to the progress of science and technology, as well as society, to further the peace and prosperity of mankind. While the prize encompasses all fields of science, two fields are designated for the Japan Prize each year. Since its inception in 1985, the Japan Prize Foundation has awarded the Japan Prize to 86 laureates from 13 countries. Securing IoT devices from within – GCN.com (blog)

Securing IoT devices from within

Security experts have long fretted about the rapidly expanding number of internet of things devices. While most such tools may not contain data that should be protected, many connect to the cloud and represent easy targets for hackers to gain access -- not only to that device, but to all other devices connected to an IoT mesh.

To address this issue, AWS in 2015 released its IoT platform, which includes provisions for mutual authentication which is intended to verify the integrity of all devices connecting to the AWS IoT cloud.

Connecting devices can use the AWS SigV4 method of authentication or follow the traditional approach of using X.509 certificates to manage public-key encryption. IoT managers can map roles and/or policies to each certificate so that devices or applications can be authorized (or de-authorized) without ever touching the device.

As might be expected, an organization with thousands of IoT-enabled devices might find it too difficult to provision and manage all those certificates and keys. One solution is the AWS the Use Your Own Certificate program, which allows original equipment manufacturers to register digital certificates signed by a third-party authorities with the AWS IoT platform using an application programming interface, according to Embedded Computing.

That means unique cryptographic keys can be generated for each device during production, signed by a certificate authority and then loaded into the AWS IoT platform to await a service request from systems containing the corresponding key pairs, the site said.

A hardware solution that offers built-in end-to-end security between the device and cloud servers has been developed by Microchip Technology Inc. and AWS.

It uses a small chip that is preloaded with the unique cryptographic codes to allow data to be transmitted more securely from an IoT device to the cloud.

According to Eustace Asanghanwa, strategic marketing manager for Microchip Technology, the AWS-ECC508 chip eliminates the need for IoT device manufacturers to go through a multistep process of preregistering their device with AWS servers and generating encryption keys for communications. Instead, the AWS-ECC508, a 3mm by 2mm, 60-cent device (in quantities of 10,000 or more) handles the connection and encryption automatically.

The device can be soldered onto a circuit board and connected to the host microcontroller that configures the chip for the AWS IoT. Because the AWS-ECC508 is preconfigured to be recognized by AWS without any intervention, there is no need to load unique keys and certificates because the information is contained in a small, easy to deploy crypto companion device, the company said.

Unlike the RSA encryption algorithm in widespread use, the Microchip Technology processor employs a more efficient elliptic curve cryptography algorithm that does require as big a key and is, therefore, faster and calls for less hardware.

According to Asanghanwa, IoT device manufacturers have often not paid sufficient attention to building security into their devices because of an overriding focus on keeping costs down.

Looking at the product holistically, the AWS-ECC508 actually reduces overall cost, he said. If you consider not just hardware but also implementation, such as the capital and operational costs of securely injecting keys and managing them in a supply chain, the AWS-ECC508 actually creates a significant cost-reduction for any given product.

While the AWS-ECC508 will only work with Amazon Cloud Services, the underlying ECC508 technology can be configured to work with any storage or cloud vendors services.

Julian Assange calls on UK and Sweden to set him free – CNET

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange speaks from the balcony of the Ecuadorian embassy in London on Feb. 5, 2016.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in a tweet on Monday called upon the UK and Sweden to restore his freedom.

Assange has been living in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for over four years, having been offered asylum by the country amid legal tussles with the US, Sweden and the UK. If Assange were to leave the embassy, he would be immediately arrested by British police who would then extradite him to Sweden, where he is under investigation by prosecutors.

It has been one year since the UN told the UK and Sweden that they were acting unlawfully by depriving Assange of his liberty and must immediately free him and compensate him. The UK appealed the decision, but its request for the decision to be reconsidered was rejected by the UN in November.

"I call on the UK and Sweden to do the right thing and restore my liberty," said Assange in a statement tweeted by WikiLeaks. "These two states signed treaties to recognize the UN and its human rights mechanisms."

Assange's saga is a complicated one. Sweden issued an arrest warrant for the Australian native six years ago on several charges, including an allegation of rape. Assange took shelter in the Ecuadorian embassy in London because he feared officials would extradite him to the US to face prosecution over leaked government and military documents.

Last month, Assange said he would be willing to travel to the US to face a federal investigation tied to WikiLeaks' publication of classified government documents, though he set some conditions: He wants the Justice Department either to drop its charges against him or to unseal any extradition orders or charges it's keeping confidential. That came after President Barack Obama commuted the prison sentence of Chelsea Manning, the former US soldier who supplied WikiLeaks with thousands of classified documents.

Spokespeople from the UK and Swedish governments didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Top 6 Rare Cryptocurrencies – The Merkle

In the world of cryptocurrency, there is a lot of focus on bitcoin and other major currencies. However, there are quite a few altcoins who take the concept of creating a scarce supply to extreme measures. Although scarcity alone does not give a cryptocurrency intrinsic value by any means, it goes to show it can create an illusion of value over time.

The current cryptocurrency with the absolute lowest supply of coins to be recorded so far is bitGold. Its supply only has 10.2299 coins right now, all of which are quite valuable. In fact, the market cap of US$14,473 may look small, but it does mean every BTGOLD is worth over US$1,400. Unfortunately, bitGold only had less than US$100 worth of trading volume in the past 24 hours, making this cryptocurrency less than attractive to investors.

Rather than trying to create an altcoin with a fancy name, 42-coin simply illustrates the available coin supply. All 41.9999 coins have been brought into circulation, establishing a market cap of US$32,019. Not necessarily a favorite altcoin either, as its volume is even lower than bitGold right now.

Quite a few altcoins have tried to piggyback on the Bitcoin name, including bitBTC. With a supply of 43,8132 it is almost as scarce as 42-coin and generates slightly higher trading volumes. The market cap of US$46,854 is not bad, considering bitBTC has no real world use yet.

Not every altcoin with a smaller supply is worth next to nothing. Jinn is one of the few currencies bucking the trend as every one of the available 56,703 coins is worth US$6.56 each. This puts its market cap at well above the US$280,000 mark right now. Dont be surprised if you have never heard of Jinn, though, as its use cases are virtually non-existent.

One of the surprise entrants on the list of low-supply yet valuable alternative cryptocurrencies goes by the name Byteball. Under the GBYTE ticket, a total supply of 100,000 coins has been made available. With every coin surpassing the US$87.24 value, the market cap is on its way to surpass US$9m. Byteball also generated nearly US$120,000 in trading volume over the past 24 hours, making it quite successful in its own right.

When ZCash launched not too long ago, it became clear the supply of this currency would remain somewhat limited for quite some time. With just over half a million coins in circulation right now, the price per ZEC found a new home around the U$38.82 mark. It is intriguing to see this privacy-centric currency reach a market cap of nearly US$23m in such a short amount of time, though. ZCash continues to generate a fair amount of daily trading volume as well, making it quite a popular cryptocurrency.

SibCoin Meets the Needs of Russian Cryptocurrency Community … – newsBTC

SibCoin is developed on a fork of Dash cryptocurrency platform. Dash is currently the sixth largest cryptocurrency in terms of market capitalization.

The cryptocurrency industry is flooded with hundreds of altcoins. The open source nature of many cryptocurrency platforms offers an easy way to create and deploy new altcoins. However, unless these altcoins serve a specific purpose or solve a particular problem, they will eventually fade into oblivion.

SibCoin, short for Siberian Chervonets is one such altcoin which is out there on a specific mission meeting the blockchain needs of the Russian community. SibCoin is developed on a fork of Dash cryptocurrency platform. Dash is currently the sixth largest cryptocurrency in terms of market capitalization. The highly successful SibCoin recently broke the record after its masternode network volume surpassed that of its parent coin. With increasing adoption, the gap between Dash and SibCoin continues to widen.

Unlike other cryptocurrencies, SibCoin has a unique advantage. The digital currency is created by a group of Russian developers, for the Russian community. In a country where the Western concepts are taken with a pinch of salt due to decades of mistrust, a home-grown cryptocurrency is much easier to accept.

Also, in Siberia and many other Russian cities, people feel that their contributions to the countrys economy are underappreciated. They are also fed up with corruption and bureaucratic inefficiencies plaguing the system. They believe that blockchain, with its transparency, can be a solution to all these issues.

SibCoin has broken the barrier which Bitcoin was unable to surpass since its inception. The creators of SibCoin have made further improvements to the Dash protocol by employing additional encryption algorithms to make it much better and more adaptable among the Russian population. At the same time, the SibCoin team is also involved in active promotion and awareness campaigns across Russia to familiarize the population to SibCoin and blockchain technology in general.

As the SibCoin community grows, the cryptocurrency could turn out to be the driving force behind the countrys blockchain revolution.

Cryptocurrency: Now in Crimea – Eastern Daily News

While some countries are busy trying to come up with laws to regulate the use of cryptocurrencies, others are busy coming up with laws to legalize digital currencies. In light of the events by the European Commission, member countries of the European Union are coming up with laws to regulate Bitcoin. Russia has however not made such steps, instead its doing the opposite. Last year Russia announced that it considers Bitcoin transactions and exchanges as legitimate in the eyes of the law. This was good news to the Cryptocurrency world considering that Russia is a country where laws relating to capital control are more strict than in most countries.

Dmitry Marinichev, Russias internet ombudsman, has made suggestions to bringthe use of cryptocurrencies to residents of Crimea. With Crimea in need of investors, Mr. Marinichev believes that opening of Cryptocurrency exchanges will help to attract new investors to this region. For this to be successful, a free economic zone will have to be created within the peninsula. Mr. Marinichev also had this to say on regulation of Cryptocurrencies in Russia: Today Crimea is an exclusive economic zone, which makes it possible to start with the opening of Cryptocurrency exchanges operating there absolutely legally. As a result we will see the actual legalization of Cryptocurrencies.

The head of the Working Group For the Assessment of Risks of Cryptocurrencies in the state of Duma of the Russian Federation, Elina Sidorenko highlighted that using Cryptocurrency instruments for international transactions would improve the banking climate on the peninsula. There is truth to that sentiment because major players in the banking industry do believe that the blockchain technology, which is the technology behind cryptocurrency, is the future of global financial system.

There is a significant number of regions in Crimea, which are unbanked. Residents of these unbanked regions of Crimea now have good news because transactions involving digital currencies do not need banks to be validated. Cryptocurrencies are completely decentralized and the blockchain technology ensures that transactions are validated, hence detecting any fraudulent or unauthorized transactions. Alex Fork, CEO of Humaniq had this opinion on the unbanked regions: Unbanked regions usually consist of a financially poor population. the most important thing is to provide them with a new technology available absolutely free of charge.

There have been countries, mostly in the European union, that in recent times are trying to regulate digital currencies because of criminals using them to commitillegal operations. These unbanked regions provide a chance to experiment and finally make a sound decision regarding digital currencies. The residents of these unbanked regions also get a chance to enjoy the exciting advantages of cryptocurrencies. This move by Russia provides a win-win situation for both the regulator and the residents. Its always good news in the cryptocurrency world when a new country joins.

What Is Vault 7 on WikiLeaks? [#Vault7 Photos & Tweets] – Heavy.com

WikiLeaks Twitter followers are wondering about the meaning behind mysterious #Vault7 tweets. (Getty)

WikiLeaks is known for its cryptic messages, but the latest #Vault7 tweets may be among the most mysterious. WikiLeaks Twitter account just recently started tweeting #Vault7 messages with cryptic photos, and no one is quite sure what WikiLeaks is hinting about. The tweets aresparking all sorts of theories ranging from post-apocalyptic in nature to theories that are more conspiracy-laden. Weve gathered the photos and tweets and are sharing the latest theories and analysis. Once youre done reading this article, take our poll at the end of the storyand let us know which theory you think is most likely true.

Heres what you need to know.

(Twitter/WikiLeaks)

Starting February 4 and ending early Monday morning, WikiLeaks shared a series of strange tweets about #Vault7. The first is pictured above.

The tweet featuresa photo of the Svalbard Seed Vault. You can watcha video about it below:

The seed vault is on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen in a remote Arctic archipelago. The vault was started by Cary Fowler and the Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research to preserve plant seeds and make sure there are always spare copies of seeds around the world, in case of a global or regional crisis. The facilitys managed by the Nordic Genetic Resource Center, but there are no permanent staff at the facility. The permafrost and lack of tectonic activity makethis a good location for a seed vault.

What you see above the entrance to the vault, in the photo, is an illuminated public artwork. It was made by Dyveke Sanne and is called Perpetual Repercussion. Interestingly, Norwary requires that government-funded works that exceed a certain amount must include artwork.

The second tweet is pictured above. It asked Where is #Vault7? Thephoto in the tweet shows Nazi gold stored in Merkers Salt Mine (its referenced in this Wikipedia article.)The gold at Merkers was discovered when the U.S. Army took Merkers in 1945 during World War II. Two French women had reported that the Kaiseroda salt mine had gold stored by Germans, which was how the U.S. Army first discovered it.According to the National Archives, the minecontained gold bullion, gold Reichsmarks, British gold pounds, French gold francs, American gold pieces, gold and silver coins, additional foreign currency, silver bars, platinum bars, artwork, and more.

Nazi gold was allegedly transferred by Nazi Germany to overseas banks during World War II, as part of a strategy involving looting victims assets to fund the war. Authorsand conspiracy theorists have long guessed about what happened to the Nazi gold that disappeared. In fact, a group of Holocaust survivorseven brought a civil suit against the Vatican Bank over it, filed in November 1999. The case was dismissed in 2003, but then reinstated in part in 2005.Various parts of the case were dismissed again in 2007-2009. The Nazi gold has been the subject of conspiracy theories for a long time.

(Twitter/WikiLeaks)

The final tweet in the series, as of the time of publication, asked When Is #Vault7? The photo in the tweet was from 2010, takenat Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, while running a test on a Pratt and Whitney F119-PW-100 jet engine. The jet inspections look for any objects that could damage blades inside the engines. The article that the picture is from talks about soundproof hush houses that are used for jet engine testing. These are sometimes called vaults.

There are quite a few theories circulating about what these #Vault7 tweetscould mean. Some people were getting worried and wondered out loud if WikiLeaks knew something that they didnt.

Here are some of the theories:

One theory points outthat the FBI recently released part 6 of 6 fromHillary Clintons email investigation. This theory proposes that the tweets area reference to deleted emails that the FBI will never be able to release. The FBIs Vault releases on Clinton can be viewed here. These deleted emails would have, theoretically, been releasedas Vault 7. Othersbelieve WikiLeaks is hintingabout a new Clinton email batch that they plan to release themselves.

Others are holding to a theory that this is about an upcoming 9/11 leak. In the third tweet, the engine was an F119, and these theorists point out that 119 backwards is 911. They also reference Building 7, which has been the source of many 9/11 conspiracy theories, including a conspiracy theorythat there was a vault of gold beneath the building. (This conspiracy theory is oftenincorrectly ascribed to Building 7, but its actually about Building 6.) It seems like a bit of a stretch, since WikiLeaks has not made any indications of an upcoming 9/11 leak. A more likely explanation is that the photo was chosen because jet engine was being tested in a room sometimes called a vault.

Others are taking this even farther and finding any connection they can to the number seven. In several WikiLeaks Reddit discussions, some have said that it might be a reference to the nextmass extinction event following the sixth, whichsome scientists say we are already in the middle of. This theory is connected to the first tweet, which showed the seed vault, and proposes that #Vault7 has something to do with climate change.

Then theres the shadow government theory connected to the number seven.CNBCreported in October that a newFBI release featuredclaims of a shadow government composed of high-ranking state officials, whom some referred to as The 7th Floor Group.

Here are some other past references to Vault 7, not connected to WikiLeaks:

It remains to be seen which of these theories about Vault 7 if any will end up being correct. Theres also a chance that thepictures might not provide any clues at all, and WikiLeaks might simply be showing pictures of well-known vaults to go with its tweets about #Vault7. If WikiLeaks is referencing the 5 Ws (& one H) of journalism (Who, What, Where, When, Why & How), then more mysterious tweets will likelybe coming soon.

When it comes to #Vault7, which theory do you believe? Let us know in this poll:

Who was WikiLeaks' and Julian Assange's source for the DNC and Podesta leaks? See top theories here.

WikiLeaks DOOMSDAY warning? Coded tweet sparks fears of imminent apocalypse – Daily Star

A SERIES of mysterious tweets from WikiLeaks have provoked a storm of panic-stricken theories suggesting the end is neigh.

TWITTER/GETTY

Truth seekers have gone into meltdown over three coded messages posted to the official WikiLeaks Twitter account.

The tweets, posted on February 4, contain brief questions asking what, where and when is #Vault7? alongside seemingly unrelated images.

Pictures of the "Doomsday seed vault" in Norway, a German salt mine containing Nazi loot and a US Air Force jet engine are included in the tweets.

Now conspiracy theorists have gone into overdrive trying to figure out the meaning of the ambiguous messages.

WikiLeaks founded Julian Assange is renowned for communicating on Twitter in seemingly incomprehensible posts.

One conspiracy theoristbelieves the tweets are a warning of some terrible event coming whatever it may be, pole shift, asteroid, super volcano erupting, terrorist attack.

Others suggested WikiLeaks could be preparing to release more potentially damning information about former US presidential candidateHillary Clinton.

Alluding to the image of the Nazi gold, one person wrote: There have been 6 downloadable Hillary Clinton drops from FBI vault.

I think [WikiLeaks] are pointing to the next one, number 7 as being the hidden gold that the Nazis (bad guys) didn't want us to see.

[WikiLeaks] are warning of some terrible event coming.

Another truther suggested the images could indicate WikiLeaks has found evidence of a secret Nazi facility in Antarctica with crazy tech.

They added: Maybe they found ancient ruins under the ice with advanced tech.

Maybe the WikiLeaks will expose a secret American facility there like Area 51.

Either way, I'm guessing this all has to do with the Antarctica buzz lately.

From mind control, to the missing Malaysian airways flight MH370, here are the top 10 conspiracy theories.

1 / 10

In 2011, Osama Bin Laden was killed by US Navy Seals and buried at sea, but now conspiracy theorists claim that it was all a lie and he is still alive

Its not the first time WikiLeaks speculation has bamboozled the internet.

Rumours that Assange is dead swelled after a long period of silence from the Aussie hacker.

He added fuel to the flames with an "ask me anything" session on the Reddit website in which he refused to offer proof of life.

Assange and WikiLeaks are accused of leaking material obtained by Russian hackers intent on helping Donald Trump win last years US election.
